Since the Ministry had told Hermione her new assignment would be to check out two hunters that seemed to stumble often onto magical artifacts, her life hadn't been the same. She had read the files they had on the two brothers and hadn't truly believed all that had been written, then she met them…yeah, the files weren't far off after all. She was amazed they had survived so much. It seemed the Universe was out to get them and they met it head-on, not giving an inch. She admired them greatly. Of course, their first meeting hadn't been ideal with her being a witch. It had taken her sticking them to the ground and relieving both brothers of their weapons before she could get hurt. They had heard witch and nothing else. Once she had explained to Dean and Sam about her world, giving Sam books to read and sharing memories with Dean, they had finally stopped being aggressive towards her.
When she had explained why she was there and she was authorized to offer them a "job", they had given her their undivided attention. Instead of just hunting the supernatural that were causing problems, they would help her reclaim magical artifacts that had fallen into muggle hands. Dean and Sam hadn't really thought it was a problem until she showed them some of the files the Ministry had. Once they were shown just how dangerous and, sadly, often these artifacts reigned havoc, they were onboard with helping. Oh, and finally being paid for what they did, magical or supernatural, was icing on the cake.
Hermione admired their willingness to constantly put their lives on the line for people who would never know or care. It took a special type of person to be able to do that. When she had learned that angels and demons were real, it had shocked her, that part hadn't been in their Ministry file. Of course the wizarding world wouldn't include something they didn't believe in or couldn't possibly be a real threat but then she had met Castiel and Crowley. One was charming in his cluelessness and the other in being quite snarky. Then she had met Gabriel, who she learned had been hiding as the Trickster or Loki. She was amazed at his bravery to stand up to his brothers and fellow angels on the brothers' behalf. She found herself liking all three beings despite not really wanting to considering what they had put Sam and Dean through.
Hermione had taken the hunters' advice and had an anti-possession symbol tattooed onto her shoulder blade and, without her consent, Cas had also placed Enochian symbols on her ribs to hide her from angels. He told her that she was a target due to being a witch and to helping Sam and Dean. The angels weren't happy with her interference. Hermione had told Cas that they could take their irritation and shove it where the sun didn't shine, she didn't care. She protected those she considered friends and family from all who would bring them harm. One of the first things Hermione had done was to help Dean deal with his time in Hell. She knew he had spent several months there and couldn't imagine what all he had been through. She hadn't asked and he hadn't volunteered but she knew a few spells to help him dull the memories and, with his permission, had cast them on him. To her amazement, Castiel had thanked her.
At the moment though, Hermione was trying to pass the time while Dean worked on his Impala, Baby. She snorted softly when she remembered learning his car was named Baby, of course Dean would. She was fascinated how protective of the vehicle he was until she learned his dad had bought it with his slight push and then that young Dean and Sam had spent more time in the car than anywhere else.
She smiled when she thought of Dean and Sam sharing the backseat to play. Then she laughed quietly when she tried to picture Sam, long legged Sam, trying to fit in the back before it became just the two of them. Then her mind switched to Dean and she sighed. The hunter was dangerous to her in more ways than one. He was smarter than he let on, he was devoted to family, he protected the innocent, he was cocky and so self-assured but instead of turning her off, Hermione found she quite liked those qualities. They had been flirting since Dean accepted her as a good witch and hadn't let up six months later.
As she was leaning against the trunk of Baby, Hermione started drawing in the dust that layered the car. She paid no attention to what, exactly, she was doing. It was only after Dean had walked back around to the front of the car that she realized what had been written. Her face turning beet red, Hermione wiped her hand through the words before Dean could see it. She was positive he hadn't or he wouldn't have stayed quiet about it, teasing her to no end.

Dean excused himself when Hermione showed up, he needed to not be in close quarters with the feisty witch. Witch! He knew his father was given Sam and he hell for befriending a witch, good or bad. Dean, however, knew Hermione would rather take her own life than hurt someone intentionally. She really was a good person, witch or not. It had taken him a bit to get over the fact she could wield magic like they wielded their weapons. After demanding proof, the petite firecracker had whipped out her wand and had performed several spells. At least Sam and he could enjoy the display of power. Their first meeting hadn't gone well, at all. As soon as she had said she was a witch, Sam and he had pulled their weapons only for her to stick them to the floor and disarm them with a swish of her stick! It had boggled them and worried Dean until she proved she wasn't out to hurt them and didn't need any "damn demon to bargain with in order to do so!"
Dean had then run her through the tests and she had passed every single one. The smug smile she had radiated to them had he and Sam realizing they were at her mercy. Fortunately, Hermione only wanted to help them and for them to help her in return. She had an offer from her government, help her find magical artifacts that had fallen into humans' hands and she would help them along with them getting a paycheck. Dean had been skeptical at first, at least until he received his first payday via owl for a month's work. That was when Dean had accepted that her government was serious about keeping as many safe as they could instead of ruling over whatever happened their way.
Then he had learned about the magical war she and those of her kind had been in not two years prior and it had blown his mind. It was then Dean realized her people weren't much different than they were. There would always be good and bad no matter the species. When he had learned her role in the War, his respect for the feisty brunette had ratcheted up considerably. She was a fighter and a survivor and Dean could respect that. He hated she had had to go through all she did but knew it had made her the person she was now. Also, when Cas had shared that he had spent time in Hell, Hermione had been quick to research what spells she could cast to help him deal with that time. She had found several and had asked for his express permission before she would cast a single one. He had been apprehensive until Cas had vouched for her and now, now he was very glad he had agreed. It wasn't that he no longer remembered his time there but the edge had been taken off. The memories weren't as clear or as haunting and Dean would be forever grateful to the little witch for her consideration. She had offered to take his memories away but warned him that he, especially him, would feel something missing and it could cause him problems later. He had turned that down, he didn't really want to forget everything but have the sharp, crystal clearness of that time dulled. It only took Hermione a few minutes to cast the spells and Dean felt the result immediately. He had worried that he had come back missing part of himself but after the spells were cast, learned that it was only a byproduct of spending time in Hell.
It was then that Dean really started flirting with Hermione. He had before out of habit, she was very beautiful, inside and out and he couldn't resist but after she helped him, he amped up the flirting several notches. He loved when he could make her blush, which was more often than not. She was also a lot of fun to rile up. The fire in her eyes was intoxicating and then her hair would send off sparks and he just couldn't help himself. Sam often warned him that one day she would hex him but Dean was willing to take that chance see her become so passionate and sexy.
At the moment, though, he was working on Baby. A demon bitch had rammed into the driver side and dented the fender all to hell. He had actually performed the exorcism on that one with relish. It was also time to give the Impala a tune-up so he combined the two. What helped and didn't at the same time was that Hermione had followed him out and kept him company until he had started banging the fender back out. She had stepped to the back and was leaning against the trunk. Dean found himself glancing her way several times, wondering what she was thinking about. He had to walk back towards her to retrieve the rubber mallet to do the fine tuning when he noticed she had written in the dirt. Dean had started to get onto her about "defacing" Baby but then he read what had been written and smirked. Instead of saying anything to her, he turned quietly around and made his way back to the front. Once there, he used the mallet as he thought of what he had read.
Figuring out how to respond, Dean finished with the fender before he grabbed a long cylinder piece of metal close by. He then wrote her name out with enough room to add his thoughts.

When Hermione noticed the silence, she dusted herself off and walked towards the front of the car. As Dean came into view, Hermione noticed him holding a piece of metal and drawing in the dirt. When she looked over, her jaw dropped and her eyes snapped to his, beautiful green locked onto golden amber.
"Dean, is that how you feel about me?" Hermione whispered.
"Yeah. Did you mean yours?" Dean answered.
"Yes" came her reply as they moved into the other's embrace as their lips met for a fiery kiss full of promise.
