Terry landed unceremoniously on her stomach, almost face-planting right into the ground. She barely managed to save herself by smacking her hands down in time to keep her face from becoming one with the cobbly pavement but that only meant her hands suffered where her face would have.
Wincing from the pain, she shook her head to clear it from the haze that had settled in post her regeneration. It was different from the first time she had regenerated, although she supposed that the regeneration process could be different for each incarnation.
For one, it seemed that this time she had managed to expel all of her energy while she jumped. She grimaced as she wondered where it could have gone (she would find out much later that a 'meteor shower' differentiated and characterized by gold flecks was reported on Earth at the exact same time every ten years over the course of two hundred years, giving rise to the myth of two lovers, torn apart by an untimely flying car accident in the year 2099, whose spirits would reunite in the heavens every ten years and celebrate with golden fireworks).
For another, Terry felt much calmer this time around than she had the first time she had regenerated. Perhaps because this time she had anticipated what was to come, or perhaps it was a reflection of her change in personality. Either way, she was gratified to find she wasn't willing to rattle off her gob even if her head ached and thoughts jumbled easily in her mind.
However, it seemed one thing did remain the same - she was feeling exhausted, and even without getting up Terry knew that if she attempted to get to her feet now she would probably fall right back over. Not the least of all because she was fairly certain she could feel her toes poking out of the holes in the front of her boots where the regeneration energy had blown its way out.
'Still, you are going to have to get up at some point so why not now?'
With a groan, Terry obeyed the rational voice in her head and she struggled up to her knees. Opening her eyes, she was puzzled by the strange dark curtain that blocked her vision before she realized it was her hair. Much longer and just a shade lighter than her previous incarnation, her hair fell in a tangled mess all over her face.
"Hey. Hey, are you okay?"
Pushing her messy hair out of her face, Terry looked up at the familiar Scottish voice and she smiled when she saw Amy Pond looking down at her in concern.
"Do you need any help?" Amy asked in concern, though she was giving Terry's outfit an odd look. Not that Terry blamed her in the slightest. "Oh my God, is that blood?"
"Amelia Pond." Terry mused, ignoring Amy's question as she silently listed off everything she could pick up from the redhead.
'Her face is rounder but it looks like it's because she's younger not pregnant, so probably early days. I don't see a ring on her finger, and she's wearing a nightgown and not sleeping lingerie - definitely no Rory around. Wait. Nightgown? Oh, I think I know when this is… and thankfully, that means Rory's not dead. Yet. Again. Oh wait, that's a spoiler. Better be careful not to say anything. Why's Amy looking at me like that?'
"How do you know my name?" Amy asked suspiciously, and Terry frowned before realization dawned on her.
"Right. You're surprised to see me. Conclusion: you've never met this me before." Terry murmured, speaking more to herself than Amy.
It made sense; if this was when Terry thought it was, there was no way Amy could have met her again. It just hadn't occurred to Terry before that Amy had no idea who she was, especially given Amy's willingness to help her up despite her rather tattered appearance. But then again, that probably just meant that Amy's lack of concern for strange appearances, as demonstrated when eight-year-old Amy had barely batted an eyelid at the Doctor's appearance when he had crash landed in her garden, hadn't changed in the last fifteen-ish years.
"I'm Terry Storm." Terry explained and Amy frowned.
"What?" Amy looked her up and down, clearly skeptical. "Sorry, but you must have hit your head really hard. That, or you're a complete idiot if you think I'd believe such an unbelievable lie."
"No, it's true." Terry answered as she got to her feet shakily. "I'm Terry Storm."
Amy's frown deepened but Terry ignored her momentarily as she looked down at herself, taking in the damage. Her ruined leather jacket (not that Terry really felt much for it now) hung in tatters around her bloodied chest. And standing up, Terry realized she must be taller and fuller than her previous body. The dress that had fit perfectly before was a little tight and much shorter on her now - uncomfortably so. Amy was also not as tall from her perspective, and Terry estimated she must have grown three or so inches from her prior incarnation. And of course, her feet must have also grown to accommodate her height as she had blasted holes through the front of her boots, leaving her toes to poke out.
Amy was also looking at her more closely, and the redhead began grudgingly, "Well, I suppose you are dressed like Terry was with the jacket and the boots… but why're they all, you know…?"
Amy trailed off politely although her eyes were still on Terry's toes wiggling out of the holes in her boots.
"Well-" Terry began, as she raised her head from where she'd been examining herself.
But a sudden blow to the head had Terry keeling over, out cold before she even hit the cold, cobbled ground.
Terry opened her eyes and she groaned, leaning back in the chair she'd been placed in.
'This is what the Doctor must have felt like when he woke up after being clobbered by a cricket bat.' Terry thought as her head throbbed. It still hurt but now it was from the large lump on her head. Her thoughts themselves, however, had cleared and she was feeling strangely better for having had her head bashed in after her regeneration.
'Still feeling a little tired though. When was the last time I slept?' She thought absently to herself when suddenly the door to the small room she was in was thrown open.
Terry looked over just as a whirlwind of hair and tweed came flying at her.
"Angel!" The Doctor said in relief as he pulled her up and hugged her tightly. "Thought so - the room wasn't locked even though it said it was occupied, and there's only one other non-human on this ship as far as I know of."
"Hello, Sweetie." Terry smiled, hugging the Doctor back but she had a pressing question on her mind. "Doctor, I've only just-"
"Regenerated?" The Doctor suggested as he let her go and he gestured to her appearance. "I guessed as much. I've only just regenerated myself, you know."
"I do know." Terry answered impatiently. "But before we get into that, I need to know - was Jenny all right? Was she safe?"
The Doctor's expression softened and he nodded. Terry let out a breath of relief while the Doctor explained, "She chose to remain behind to help the Hath and the humans rebuild the planet. Said that she didn't want your sacrifice to be in vain. After that, she planned to see the universe on her own - maybe one day we'll find her again."
Terry smiled wistfully.
"I hope one day we will." She murmured softly.
The Doctor smiled back and he kissed her impulsively but gently. Terry answered the kiss but she broke away after a moment with a reluctant sigh.
"As much as I'd love to stay like this, we should find Amy." Terry admitted.
"Oh, hang on," the Doctor stopped her as Terry started to pull him out with her. "I wanted to check what these screens and those buttons are for-"
The Doctor gestured to the four screens that had been in front of Terry's chair and the two buttons that were on the console before the screens. Terry glanced at the buttons briefly - one said 'Protest' while the second said 'Forget'.
Terry turned back to the Doctor as she explained, "Amy'll be in a cubicle too, you can take a closer look then but we need to find her quickly first."
"She's right next door."
Terry looked past the Doctor to see a young girl of about twelve standing outside the cubicle.
"Mandy?" Terry guessed and the little girl cocked her head.
"How do you know me?" The girl questioned. "Is it like how you knew Amy?"
"Right, you were probably hiding when I arrived." Terry mused, before looking back down at the little girl and feeling more amused by the fact that the girl seemed completely unfazed by the fact that Terry and the Doctor had been kissing right in front of her just moments earlier. "Yes, let's just say I know you like I know Amy."
"How?" Mandy asked suspiciously. "And how'd you… show up earlier? You weren't there a minute before and then there was a blue light and suddenly you were on the ground."
"I'm special like that." Terry replied. "It's my Italian heritage."
Mandy still looked a little suspicious but, with the innocence of a child, she let it go while Terry said to the Doctor (who was looking far too amused), "Let's go get Amy."
"Hang on, I've got some clo-," the Doctor began as he reached for his jacket pocket but Terry shook her head.
"In a minute, Amy first." She replied as she took the Doctor's hand and pulled him along.
"What's the hurry?" The Doctor asked telepathically, and Terry shook her head.
"In a minute." She replied as they reached the next cubicle, just as the door swung open.
"Listen to me."
The Doctor and Terry paused in the doorway at the sight of Amy's tear streaked but bewildered face while onscreen a recording of a crying Amy continued to speak on the screens.
"This isn't a trick. This is for real."
"Amy?" The Doctor asked carefully as Amy looked at him, Terry and the screens in stunned confusion.
"You've got to find the Doctor-"
Amy, realizing the situation, quickly shut off the screens, pressing the third button on the voting panel. Terry stayed back, observing silently as the Doctor watched Amy closely.
"What have you done?" The Doctor asked quietly.
Amy just looked away, looking firstly at the now-blank screens, and then back at the Doctor and Terry.
"Why's she with you?" Amy asked evasively, nodding at Terry.
The Doctor frowned at that, but Terry said smoothly, "Amy, I told you - I'm Terry."
"You can't be." Amy protested, and Terry replied vaguely, "Trust me, I can and I am. I'll explain later, first let the Doctor sniff around as he's been dying to do. "
Amy frowned again, but she stayed silent as the Doctor made to move into the room. Terry stopped him with a hand to his chest - something that Amy frowned even more deeply at.
"I think I'll change while you snoop?" Terry suggested, and the Doctor cocked his head as he examined Terry curiously.
Still, he nodded and he pulled out one set of the clothes and shoes he always carried in his jackets in case Terry arrived in need of them, as well as some wet wipes.
"You carry her clothes?" Amy asked incredulously while Mandy asked as she stared at the shoes, "How'd those fit in your jacket?"
"Never you two mind." The Doctor answered while Terry took the clothes and wipes and walked off to the other voting cubicle to change.
"I'll be right back." Terry called over her shoulder, and Amy looked from her to the Doctor with the same frown she'd had for a while.
"Any hints?" The Doctor called after her mentally.
"I think you're already starting to work it out without my help." She answered and the Doctor's lips thinned just slightly.
He moved to scan the device hanging from the ceiling, positioned directly above where a person would be standing if they were to push one of the voting buttons while Terry left and walked into the other cubicle.
Quickly stripping, Terry wiped the blood off her skin with the wipes the Doctor had given her as she examined her new outfit. Apparently, the Doctor knew all of her regenerations quite well (not that she expected any less from him - after all, she could describe all of his regenerations' favourite outfits without so much as batting an eyelash) because Terry was quite satisfied with his selection. She pulled on the white collared shirt and then a red sleeveless sweater dress over the shirt. The black stockings and black oxfords were also a perfect fit, and Terry touched her neck briefly as she looked down at herself.
'I'll find a scarf later...' She mused as she tossed aside her ruined clothes and boots and stepped out of the voting cubicle, ignoring the way the robotic Smiler that sat in a booth inside the voting cubicle turned into a Frowner when she left the cubicle dirtier than when she had entered it. If they had a problem with it, they could come after her - they'd be doing that sooner or later anyhow.
When she came out, she saw Mandy looking quite white-faced as she stared at the voting cubicle that the Doctor and Amy had been inside… which now read 'Empty'.
"Where's the Doctor?" Terry asked and Mandy shook her head.
"He pressed 'Protest'." The child explained. "The door locked and now he and Amy are gone."
"Okay, not to worry." Terry answered briskly. "Do you know who we can go to to help find them?"
"I… I know someone..." Mandy began hesitantly.
"Well, lead on." Terry encouraged.
Mandy gave her a sideways glance and the child noted, "You're not very surprised."
"About what?" Terry asked patiently.
"Your friends are gone, and may be in real danger." Mandy pointed out. "And you seemed to already know I knew someone who could help."
"Well, the Doctor sticks his nose in where people don't want him to." Terry answered with a shrug. "Conclusion? He's always getting into trouble, so why wouldn't he this time as well, especially since those Smilers seem quite intent on hiding something."
Terry nodded to the far side of the corridor they were in, indicating the Smilers that sat in the booths on the opposite side of the large open space.
"Once you get to know the Doctor, it's no longer quite surprising to find he's gotten himself into trouble again."
"Okay…" Mandy said slowly, and Terry continued.
"Now, as to your helpful friend. You were clearly able to find us after we were knocked out and carried here, and someone must have been able to find the Doctor to bring him here. This is a pretty large ship, so how would you have been able to find the Doctor and bring him back here in time before I woke up? Conclusion: you had help, and your helpful friend should be able to lead us to wherever the Doctor's been taken this time."
Mandy gaped at the Time Lady as Terry finished.
"You… you're a genius." Mandy breathed and Terry snorted.
"Hardly - I'm just a little clever." And clairvoyant or something since I've seen this episode before. "So, are you ready to lead on?"
"No need."
Terry looked over at the new voice and she smiled as she saw a cloaked figure whose face was hidden behind a white mask, hiding in the shadows.
"Well," Terry said. "I don't think I need to be introduced."
"No, you don't." The mysterious woman agreed, and even with the mask Terry could tell she was smiling. "I've heard a great deal about you, Miss Storm."
"I can't say the same about you." Terry admitted. "But I'm sure we'll get to know each other, Liz."
The woman's smile appeared to widen if the way Liz X's eyes crinkled behind her mask was any indication. Terry grinned back, hiding the darker feelings she had. Things would work out so she shouldn't feel distaste for the woman before her… but Terry couldn't quite shake the feeling when she could feel the stillness beneath her feet.
