"Rory. Rory!"
Rory groaned as something shook his shoulder. It wasn't Amy, the hushed voice was all wrong and besides… he and Amy hadn't shared a bed in months.
"Rory. Wake up. Wake up!"
Something hit him, hard, in the arm and Rory's eyes flew open. That felt like Amy - and there was only one other person who it could be. Rory scrambled up, rubbing his arm as he found himself staring into familiar blue eyes.
"Terry, what-?!"
Rory cut off as Terry covered his mouth hastily with her hands, silencing him as she glanced around warily. Rory followed her gaze and he gulped as he found himself in a dark chamber with water dripping from the ceiling… and filled with a whole cluster of unmoving Daleks.
"I take it we're in the Asylum?" Rory muttered in a low voice once Terry had removed her hands from his mouth.
"You would be correct." Terry whispered as she gingerly got to her feet. Rory stood beside her, staring intently at the inanimate Daleks.
"Are they… alive?" Rory asked slowly as he carefully moved toward one.
"Who knows? But can't hurt to be careful when you're on a planet filled with insane Daleks that the Daleks are scared of." Terry muttered as she looked around. "Oh, by the way, I wouldn't remove that wristband. The air is filled with the Dalek nanocloud - if you get exposed to it for too long, you'll be converted into a Dalek. That wristband is the only thing shielding you."
"What?" Rory gaped, turning away from the Dalek he had touched only to find it unresponsive. "Why would they have that kind of thing?"
"Security measure. Anything organic becomes part of the security if exposed for long enough." Terry grumbled. "So whatever you do, don't take that off."
She was still squinting into the darkness and Terry asked, "Do you have a light?"
"Uh, yeah." Rory dug into his pocket and pulled out a small penlight. He shone it around and the pair slowly took stock of the extent of the room.
"Where do you think the Doctor and Amy are?" Rory asked and Terry scoffed.
"You only ask now? Knew something was wrong with you two, usually that would have been the first thing you asked."
Rory shot Terry a look.
"Do you know this adventure?"
"Does it make a difference if I don't?" Terry countered and Rory frowned.
"Even if you don't know it, you knew about us, didn't you?" Rory guessed. "You knew this was where we were headed, from the first day we met."
Terry didn't bother to deny it.
"I knew this would happen at some point, yes. And I also know what is going to happen if you pretend like you're okay with separating from the love of your life."
"She kicked me out. Okay?" Rory answered sharply. "She kicked me out, she's the one who stopped loving me and gave up on us. It's not like I want to divorce her!"
"Yeah, just remember that." Terry answered and Rory grabbed her arm. She turned to face him as Rory stared at her without a hint of his usual good humour or warmth.
"I still love her." Rory told Terry in a low voice. "I always have. I always will. But we're not like you and the Doctor."
Rory let Terry's arm go and turned away.
"We weren't meant to be."
Something thudded deep inside Terry at that and it was her turn to grasp Rory. But instead of his arm, she took his hand and her gaze was soft when he turned to look at her again.
"You're right, you and Amy aren't like me and the Doctor. But you're strong because you're different. We all work at our relationships, Rory. And your love for her..."
Terry faltered slightly.
"It's changed worlds. Literally. You've always come back to her. But don't think that it's a one-way thing."
"Yeah, well, apparently it is for her." Rory answered bitterly but Terry squeezed his hand.
"Like I said, just don't forget, Rory." She answered gently. "Because women may be complicated, but Amelia Pond is a force of her own. Not always for the best."
"Don't I know it." Rory muttered but he hesitantly jerked his head in a nod at Terry. "Thanks, angel. I… just, thanks."
"You're welcome."
Terry let him go, knowing there was nothing more they could say to each other for the moment. Rory clearly still didn't believe her and Terry couldn't say more without giving away spoilers. Her hearts clenched again as she thought about the episode she'd watched, the vision she had, of Amy and Rory's last day with the Doctor. That time was coming, and so soon, for Rory. But while it threatened to break Terry's heart just thinking about it, it was also the last bit of proof (as if anyone ever needed it) that Amelia Pond loved Rory Williams just as much as he had always loved her.
Terry shook her head, clearing it and forcing herself to focus on the present. She was surrounded by Daleks, quite possibly her worst nightmare ever, and she needed to keep her head on her shoulders now more than ever. It was at that moment that she stumbled over a piece of metal on the ground, accidentally kicking it across the room with a loud clatter.
Both Terry and Rory froze, but it was already too late. One of the Daleks' eyepiece started to glow.
"Oh, sh-"
Terry's breathy expletive was cut off as the Dalek began to croak.
"Eg..."
"Sh!" Rory hushed it, hoping against hope it would shut down again soon but the other Daleks were now starting to wake up.
"Eg… Eg..."
"What's it saying?" Rory whispered to Terry. "Eggs?"
"No."
Terry shook her head as she took Rory's hand in hers while keeping her eyes fixed on the Daleks as they all started to croak.
"Eg… Eg… Egg..."
"Then what does it want?" Rory asked.
"Egg. Stir. Min. Ate."
Rory's eyes widened while Terry whispered, "Run."
The pair started backing away quickly as the Dalek repeated, it's voice growing stronger, "Exterminate."
"Run!" Terry yelled as the Daleks all took up the cry as they came fully to life.
"Exterminate!"
Terry pulled Rory toward the door at the end of the room just as the Daleks found their ability to use their blasters. A blast just missed their heads and Rory yelled as he forced Terry to duck just before a second blast hit right where Terry had been seconds before.
"Emergency. Emergency. Exterminate. Exterminate."
The Daleks chanted as they attempted to chase the pair, although they may as well have been snails for all the progress they made. Unfortunately, they had now regained full use of their blasters and were firing at the pair as Terry pulled Rory toward the door which had just started to slide up and open.
"How-?!" Rory began when Oswin's voice called over the intercom.
"Keep going, I've got you! Run!"
Rory ran for it, following Terry as she raced under the door, sliding on her side to get through. He followed suit, just avoiding being shot as he skidded under the door before it slid back down behind him.
"Wh… Wha…?" Rory gasped while Terry picked herself up, holding her sides with a grimace.
"I'm Oswin by the way." Oswin's voice chirped brightly, startling Rory. "What do I call you?"
"Terry Storm. This is Rory." Terry answered as she painfully straightened up and walked over to the security camera through which she knew Oswin was watching them.
"Terry, eh? Don't think I've ever met a Terry before. But, the first boy I ever fancied was called Rory."
"Liar." Terry scoffed.
"Yeah, you got me." Oswin admitted blithely. "Actually, she was called Nina. I was going through a phase."
"What is she doing?" Rory asked as he also slowly got to his feet behind Terry.
"Just flirting to keep you cheerful." Oswin answered for the Time Lady.
Before Rory could formulate a response, he and Terry heard banging in the distance and the mechanical voices of Daleks echoing through the building.
"Exterminate. Exterminate."
"Er, okay," Rory muttered hastily, "any time you want to start flirting again is fine by me."
"I thought you said you love Amy?" Terry commented dryly.
Rory just sent her a look while Oswin added, "Yeah, I heard you as well. You two were close to flirting back there, though, weren't you?"
"You've clearly been here too long if you think that was flirting." Terry muttered although there was no heat in her words. Again, her hearts ached as she thought about how this would all end for Oswin; and she tried hard not to picture Clara.
It was a bit difficult though as Oswin called, "Okay, keep going down that way. I'll see you when you reach the end."
With a click, the clever young woman was gone, leaving Terry and Rory to peer down the hallway that they were now in. Well, Rory peered; Terry was already setting off.
"Angel." Rory hissed as he hurried to catch up to her. "How do you know we can trust her?"
"Oh, my gut instinct." Terry answered quite seriously. "Forty-six years, Rory, and not once has my gut instinct been wrong. Conclusion? I can trust my gut to be the only thing that never leads me astray. Well, that and the Doctor."
"Okay..." Rory mumbled as he followed Terry as she strode down the hallway like she owned the whole place instead of having just crash-landed with him.
"You know I trust you, Terry, but don't you think we should be… you know, a little bit more careful?"
"Don't worry, Rory."
Terry peered down the path they were headed as the hallway darkened significantly around them. They'd reached a section where the lights were down and the only thing that would keep them from complete darkness once they entered was Rory's light. Terry walked on without pause.
"If we run into any Daleks and they figure out who I am, more than likely they'll start taking crack-shots at me first."
"And that's supposed to make me not worry, how?" Rory demanded. "Terry, you do realize you're my friend? And I don't love you like I love Amy, but, you know, you're important to me too."
Terry stopped in her tracks and she turned to Rory with some mild surprise. He shifted uncomfortably.
"Why're you looking at me like that?" Rory asked and Terry shook her head.
"I don't know… I think I'm growing sentimental in my old age. Or maybe it's this regeneration." Terry mused.
She'd heard similar sentiments before, of course, but she realized that usually people liked to caveat how the Doctor would react. Few had said it like Rory Williams, and she smiled to herself. Of course, it figured that the arguably kindest of the companions, the nurse among them, would be the one. Terry rose on her toes and kissed Rory's cheek.
"Thanks, Rory. You're important to me too."
"Right." Rory coughed awkwardly.
"And I'll be careful." Terry promised as she looked back down the hallway. "I'm just worried for the Doctor and Amy."
"Are they in trouble?" Rory asked, frowning instantly as worry washed over him. Of course he hadn't forgotten his almost ex-wife and the Doctor, who were also trapped somewhere in the Asylum, but if Terry was worried...
"Let's hope not."
Terry broke through Rory's panic reassuringly.
"But I'll feel better when we're all together."
Rory nodded, letting out a sigh of relief. That, he could agree with. The whole place was giving him the creeps. And it was at that moment his pencil light started flickering out.
"Oh, great." Rory grumbled, but they were saved from being plunged into darkness as the lights in the hallway suddenly flickered on. Rory flinched, expecting to find a squadron of Daleks coming toward them but it was only Oswin's voice that called to them again.
"Hey there, 'angel', beakie boy."
"Oswin." Terry called while Rory made a face.
"If it's a straight choice, I prefer Nina." Rory told the disembodied voice that seemed to follow them around the whole base.
Oswin just chuckled.
"Loving this. The nose and the chin. You two could fence."
"Oi, that's my husband and best mate you're bashing." Terry scolded but she couldn't keep the small smile off her face. Oswin, like Clara, was far too sassy for her own good.
"Now, where should we go from here?"
"Oh, you're married to the chin?"
Oswin sounded shocked - in the overdramatic, over-enthusiastic manner that told Terry Oswin was probably feigning dropping her teacup.
"How hasn't he taken out your eye yet?"
"Watch it, missy."
Terry wagged a finger sternly at the security camera even as she sighed silently to herself. Yes, Oswin was far too like Clara.
"Or you'll feel my claws taking out your eye. Now, where should we go?"
"There's a door behind you."
The door rose as Oswin spoke and Terry pulled Rory with her through it and into a circular room with a large round platform in the middle. The transport room. Terry smiled despite herself at Oswin's quick and keen skills in leading them right where she wanted them.
"Okay, you're safe for now." Oswin called. "Beakie boy, pop your shirt off, quick as you like."
"Why?" Rory asked in confusion although his hands moved to his jacket automatically.
"Does there have to be a reason?"
Rory scoffed and rolled his eyes at Oswin's feigned confusion. Straightening his jacket, he asked Terry, "Are all the women we meet always going to be so bossy and sassy?"
"I don't know." Terry shrugged. "But why're you complaining? You're the one who willingly married a Scot."
Rory shot her a withering look, when suddenly the entire room shook as the building rocked from some kind of explosion.
"Terry? What happened?" Rory asked in alarm. "That was close. Terry?"
Terry was already running through the doors and toward the source of the sound they had heard.
"Terry!"
Rory chased after Terry as she ran into a smoking chamber, covering her nose and mouth against the smoke as she searched through the smoldering remains of a whole squadron of Daleks.
"What happened here?" Rory wondered as he looked around with Terry. "Who killed all the Daleks?"
"Who do you think, Rory?" Terry answered as her eyes fixated on the figure she had been looking for. "None of the Daleks, even if they're insane, appear to turn on each other. But not even an hour after the Daleks fire their greatest enemy into the Asylum, an entire squadron of Daleks is demolished. Conclusion?"
Rory also turned to look and his jaw dropped as a sooty Doctor appeared through the smoke, carrying an unconscious Amy in his arms.
"Theta!" Terry called in her mind, her lips curling into a smile as she walked over to her husband.
The Doctor leant down to let her hug him around the neck, unable to hug her back as his arms were occupied. But his green eyes were filled with similar relief as he pulled back and looked her up and down to check that she was unharmed.
"Angel." The Doctor sighed.
The Doctor laid Amy down gently on the teleport pad. The redhead was still unconscious, which was possibly a good thing for the moment. Terry glanced anxiously at Amy's empty wrist where her protective wristband had been stolen.
Rory was equally worried as he asked the Time Lords anxiously, "Will sleeping help her? Will it slow down the process?"
"You'd better hope so." Oswin's voice replied over the intercom. "Because pretty soon she's going to try and kill you."
Rory looked to the Time Lords for confirmation. But he couldn't read their faces before a groan from below had them all looking back at Amy.
"Amy." The Doctor called softly and the redhead groaned.
"Ow." Amy mumbled.
"Amy." The Doctor sighed. "Still with us."
He pulled back to wrap his arms around Terry, kissing her forehead in relief while Rory leant over Amy as the redhead's eyes fluttered open.
"Amy, it's me. Do you remember me?"
"Oh, Rory-" Terry began in warning but it was too late. Amy slapped Rory across the face.
"She remembers me." Rory told the Time Lords in relief.
Terry grinned while the Doctor chuckled, "Same old Amy."
But Oswin's voice was dark as she interrupted slowly, "Do you know how you make someone into a Dalek? Subtract love, add anger. Doesn't she seem a bit too angry to you?"
"Well, somebody's never been to Scotland." Amy grumbled as she sat up. Rory held out a hand to help her up but at her glare he quickly retracted his hand.
Terry observed the pair while the Doctor stood to stare at the security camera and he questioned thoughtfully, "What about you, though, Oswin. How come you're okay? Why hasn't the nanocloud converted you?"
"I mentioned the genius thing, yeah?" Oswin answered saucily. "Shielded in here."
"Hm. Clever of you." The Doctor let the subject drop as he instead turned back to the issue at hand.
"Now, this place. The Daleks said it was fully automated. Look at it. It's a wreck."
"Well, I've had nearly a year to mess with them, and… not a lot else to do." Oswin answered and they could all almost picture her shrug and expression of 'What can I say?'.
The Doctor whirled on his feet and he mused aloud, "A junior entertainment manager hiding out in a wrecked ship, hacking the security systems of the most advanced warrior race the universe has ever seen."
The Doctor briefly met Terry's eyes and she slid her gaze away while the Doctor continued, "But you know what really gets me about you, Oswin?"
He turned back to the security camera as he faced Oswin once more.
"The souffles. Where do you get milk for the souffles?"
The Doctor turned back to his wife and friends as he asked, "Seriously. Is no one else wondering about that?"
Terry didn't comment, heightening the Doctor's suspicions, while Rory stated flatly, "No. Frankly, no. Twice."
Amy also shook her head but the Doctor's green eyes were fixed on Terry.
"Angel. Hint?"
Her eyes met his once more and it almost worried the Doctor that he could easily read the sorrow in them.
"Spoilers, Theta. You're already very close."
The Doctor pursed his lips at Terry's soft - and dare he say, agonized - mental response, but Oswin interrupted their silent conversation.
"So, Doctor. I've been looking you up. You're all over the database. Why do the Daleks call you the Predator? And who is Daemon?"
"I'm not the Predator, I'm just a man with a plan." The Doctor refuted. "And Daemon," he met Terry's gaze again, "is, shall we say, an unwilling ally of mine."
Terry quirked a brow in surprise while Oswin hummed.
"Hm, okay, fine, you don't want to tell me. But you've got a plan?"
"We're all ears." Rory chimed in, looking to the Doctor.
"There's a nose joke going if someone wants to pick that one off." Amy broke in and Rory threw his hands in the air at her.
But the Doctor ignored Amy completely as he answered, "In no particular order, we need to neutralise all the Daleks in this Asylum, rescue Oswin from the wreckage, escape from this planet and make sure the Daleks can't get my angel when we do, and fix Amy and Rory's marriage."
Rory blinked at the Doctor before glancing at Amy uneasily. Amy squinted.
"Okay, I'm counting four lost causes. Anyone else?" The redhead asked.
Rory rolled his eyes and got up, giving up yet again on his stubborn wife, but for the moment the Doctor and Terry had slightly more pressing concerns.
"Oswin, there's a Dalek ship in orbit." The Doctor called.
"Yes. Got it on the sensors."
"The Asylum has a forcefield." Terry reminded him and the Doctor agreed, "And the Daleks upstairs are waiting for me to turn it off. Soon as I do, they'll burn this whole world and us with it. So!"
He whirled around again to the security camera.
"Oswin, my question is this. How fast can you drop the forcefield?"
Terry started to smile as both Rory and Amy lifted their heads to stare at the Doctor in shock.
"Pretty fast." Oswin answered in a puzzled tone. "But why would I?"
"Because this is a teleport." The Doctor pointed to the teleport pad. "Am I right, Oswin?"
"Yeah. Internal use only." Oswin answered.
"We can boost the power." The Doctor answered as he tossed his sonic to Terry who started working on the teleport immediately. "Once the forcefield is down, I can use it to beam us right off this planet."
"But you said when the forcefield is down, the Daleks will blow us up." Rory pointed out.
"We'll have to be quick, yes." The Doctor agreed while Amy scuttled out of Terry's way as the Time Lady worked around the machine.
"Fine, we'll be quick." The redhead grumbled as Terry kept pushing Amy out of the way. "But where do we beam to?"
"Oh, Amy, isn't it obvious?" Terry answered as she finished up with the teleport and tossed the sonic back to the Doctor. "The only place within range is the Dalek ship."
Both Rory and Amy stared at her like Terry had lost her mind.
"They'll exterminate us on the spot." Amy protested while Rory argued, "Terry, I don't know if you remember what happened on Demon's Run, but-"
"Even if you could do that again, there's an entire army out there, we'd only live maybe four more seconds." Amy butted in, but for the first time since they'd reunited it seemed she and Rory were in agreement.
"What's wrong with four seconds?" The Doctor piped up as he grabbed Terry and twirled her with a grin. "You can do loads in four seconds."
Terry's brow shot up as the Doctor winked seductively at her.
"Okay, gross." Amy complained and the Doctor shushed her.
"Hush. So, Oswin!" The Doctor turned back to the security camera. "How fast can you drop the forcefield?"
"I can do it from here."
The Doctor snapped his fingers gleefully but his triumph was short-lived as Oswin continued.
"As soon as you come and get me."
