Taking Flight
The day after his powers finally manifested was the best day of Mako's life, because for the first time in his life, he awoke with the realization he was no longer different. And that he didn't need to wait any longer, getting dressed in a pair of brown slacks and a long sleeved shirt with a white body and dark blue sleeves that he rolled up to his elbows. After getting breakfast, he sat out on the deck of their penthouse in one of the chairs, lifting up the table with one hand out of simple fascination.
His dad explained to him that Super Strength was a fairly common power among the people of Earth, however there weren't as many that could match Omni Man's, All Might being one of the few who could. Or at least that's if what Izuku said was to be believed, "Oh man I can't wait." he said to himself excitedly as he set the table down, a shadow passing over him. Looking up he saw his father stop in midair above him.
"Sorry! I had to stop a building from collapsing after someone's quirk destabilized it." he apologized as he landed on the deck.
His son waved it off, "It's fine. So….how is this gonna work?" he asked as he stood up from the outdoor table. His parents were overjoyed that his powers had finally manifested, and his father immediately suggested he teach him the basics of flying the next day. "I mean, you said it's like a reflex like breathing but…." he said unsurely as he looked down at his feet.
Nolan nodded, "Simplified? Yes, due to our physiology, we can control our own leverage, that's how we can fly." he explained, gesturing down to his feet and them lifting a foot off the ground. Mako looked down and closed his eyes trying to focus, Nolan watched as Mako visibly tensed up, attempting to lift off the ground like he had demonstrated. It was easy for Nolan as he had been doing this for decades now, the problem was that to him it came natural compared to Mako. "Ok….I might have an idea." he realized as he hovered over to his son.
Mako opened his eyes and looked at him, "But…Ok you can't tell your mother." he said, making his son tilt his head in genuine curiosity.
"OooooK?" he agreed.
"It is a reflex, so if you were to suddenly find yourself in the air it SHOULD kick in naturally, like you trying to swim when you get thrown in the water." he explained.
Mako slowly nodded in understanding " 'Kay…." he trailed off.
"So….if you were falling, it stands to reason that you'd fly on your own out of reflex." his father reasoned.
Mako nodded, "Sure."
"So….if you jump off the balcony-" he began as he gestured towards the railing.
"WOAH WOAH WAIT, WHAT?!" He yelled out, looking between his dad and the balcony. "That is-that is NOT the direction I thought you were going with this!" he exclaimed, he remembered yesterday how Katsuki had told Izuku that if he wanted a quirk so badly he could throw himself off the roof and hope he gets one in the next life. "I thought we would just go to like….the ocean and then you'd drop me to see if It works." he explained.
Nolan blinked, "Oh…..wow, yes, much better idea." he admitted.
Mako gave his father a wary look, "Jeeze dad…"
"Oh you'd be fine, I mean if you have your strength you probably have your invulnerability." he reasoned with a shrug of his shoulders. Mako gawked at his father, "Besides I'd have caught you to be safe." he added upon seeing his so's expression, which seemed to put him at ease. Walking over, he stood behind his son before looping his arms under him and taking off into the air and flying away with his son.
Mako looked down below as the city of Tokyo passed underneath them, when he was a little kid, his dad take him out and do this with him when he was home watching over him. It wasn't nearly as high but it nevertheless always made him smile. Now however…..
Ugh, this is….this is not as comfortable as I remember. he thought, adjusting his arms slightly as his dad was basically lifting him up by his shoulders. Thanfkully within the span of a fifteen minutes, they were out over the ocean, "Yeah see, this is what I-AhHH!" he yelped as his father suddenly dropped him. His hands flailed around as his eyes shut, he could feel himself summersaulting, tumbling through the sky he felt something akin to his ears popping.
He braced himself for the imminent splash of cold water, but after a minute, he slowly opened his eyes, he was still spinning, but now he saw that he was spinning in place in midair. Nolan was grinning as he watched his son spiraling, "How. Do. I. Stop?" he asked with each rotation of him facing his father. Omni Man hovered over to him and stopped him in the upright position, "Thank you." he said, blinking as he looked down. "Woah….I…."
Nolan nodded, "Yeah." he said understandingly.
"It's just….how do you walk anywhere?" he asked, it felt like swimming but without the air in his lungs trying to pull him up, the weightlessness sensation not only being literal but almost mental as well.
Nolan smiled, "It helps with perspective. Makes me apricate this more." he said as he gestured around them. "Plus after a while you'll get a little tired from flying." he added.
"How could I get tied of this?" Mako asked as he spread his arms and legs out.
His father shook his head, "No I mean literally. Flying is like a muscle, the more you exercise it the longer you can go." he explained, his son 'ahhh'-ing in understanding. "Now then, you can move freely through space as you want to." he demonstrated a he flew back, away from his son. Then by strafing from side to side, "It has to do with your inner balance, you don't need to physically lean in the direction you wish to go, it helps cut down on wind resistance, but you don't need to always aim yourself." he explained.
Mako nodded, "Ok so….it's like….I'm pushing myself in a direction?" he tried to reason. Nolan smiled and nodded at his son's grasp of the concept. "Ok then, so if I want to go back, I just…." he said to himself as he trailed off. He raised his hands up as though he was pushing off something and shot backwards. "Woah!" he yelped as he pushed his balance back, stopping himself in midair. "Ok, ok….hang on." he said before leveraging himself forward and flying ahead.
Nolan watched as his son flew past him, a surprised look on his face present as he observed his son quickly get a handle on flight. "Uh….huh." he said as Mako stopped in midair and suddenly dropped. Nolan reacted quickly and shot after his son as he yelled, but as he got closer, he realized it wasn't of fear, but of joy.
"WHOOOOOHOOOOO!" Mako yelled as he flipped through the air freely before taking off through the air, his arms raised up in front of him a dozen feet above the water. Nolan followed after him, chuckling to himself as his son turned over and laid his hands behind his head and crossed a leg over the other. He grinned up at his dad, "This is the coolest thing ever!"
Nolan chuckled, "Alright then, you seem to have the hang of it." he said as he flew down next to his son as he turned over. "Now how about some fun? Let's see how fast you are?" he asked challengingly. Mako smirked, "Now little tip, you're gonna want to let your own momentum carry you so you don't tire yourself out to fast." he said as he and Mako turned in the same direction. "Now, last one to Hawaii buys lunch!" he declared before shooting off ahead of Mako, kicking up water despite being a good distance from the surface.
Mako laughed before shooting off after him.
His dad wasn't wrong when he told him that flight would tire him out. Halfway across the Pacific Ocean, Mako began to feel his entire body begin to tire out. His dad, miles ahead, waited for him to catch up before slowing their pace for a more leisurely flight to the island of the United States. "Wow…..it's beautiful." Mako said as he and his father approached the tropical islands, the water was clear enough that he could see the floor even from the height they were at.
Nolan nodded as they approached the side of the island where the foliage was more dense and there were less people around. "Ok so, now's a good time to talk about landing." he said as he slowed down above the cliff, "It's a little tricky, basically you need to let yourself fall, it's a lot like taking a breath underwater."
Mako blinked at his dad's analogy, "W-What?" he asked.
"Well you don't want to take a breath underwater because you'll drown, and it goes against your instincts. Same with landing, you want to stay airborne." he explained more understandably. Mako nodded as he titled his feet towards the ground, his speed slowed but he was still consistent. "Alright good now just gently fight against your falling." Omni Man instructed as he flew down. Mako tried and his decent slowed…..but not nearly enough. "Uh oh." Omni Man said as e drifted back as Mako shot forward.
"D-Dad? Dad where'd you go? Dad!?" Mako yelled out as he dropped down towards the ground.
Slamming into the earth below him a cloud of dirt exploded as he impaced the ground, creating a crater in the clearing his dad had directed him to. Nolan floated down above him gently, wincing slightly as his son climbed out of the small crater he had made. Groaning as he climbed out of the crater, Mako looked up at his dad, covered in dirt, "…..ok, good attempt!" his dad said, clapping his hands together. "Now, how about we grab some food?" he offered.
After helping pick his son out of the crater he made, he nd Mark floated over to a small hotdog truck that was parked in the parking lot of a tropical park. Grabbing two dogs for each of them the father and son sat down to eat what Nolan claimed to be, the best hotdogs on the planet. "MMMmmmmmmmhhh. Ok, yeah. Yeah these are really good" Mako hummed as he ate. His dad sat across from him at the circular table they took up with his own food in front of him.
Nolan hummed in agreement, "I'll swing by here when it's a slow day." Nolan said, Mako suddenly understanding why the vendor of the truck wasn't surprised to see him drop by despite being in full costume. "So then, what'd you think of your first day flying?" he asked cheekily.
"Best day of my life." Mako answered with a smile. Nolan chuckled, "I just…I can go anywhere can't I? I mean once I get faster I mean." he asked.
His dad swallowed his bite before answering, "Slow down there, first thing you need is your license." he replied, Mako tilted his head in confusion. "What did you think anyone who can fly with a quirk that let's them can just do that? Just like with any job you want to use with your power, you need to get a license for it." he explained, making Mako's shoulders slump in disappointment. It wasn't surprising, due to so many people having super powers there were a bevy of restrictions in place so that they couldn't use their powers with no regard for safety.
Nolan noticed the dejected expression his son had and patted his shoulder, "Hey don't worry, since there's not a ton of people who can fly, the license doesn't have as many hoops you need to jump through." he said, his son's spirits lifting at the news. "You do need to take an exam, know about some flight patterns and procedure, what to do if you go near a aircraft of any kind, but for the most part you need experience. Last time I checked you need a 100 hours of flight time at low altitude and 50 at high altitude with supervision." he explained.
"Sounds like getting a driver's license." Mako replied.
His father shrugged, "Eh, pretty much. But after that? You take a test and pass? Your golden." he replied, making Mako smile. "Also you need to learn how to land." he remarked jokingly.
His son looked down at his empty hands, he finally had his powers…..that fact still sounded surreal in his head. When they were younger, he and Izuku would talk about being heroes together when they were older. And how despite his friend's quirklessness, he'd find some way to be one, because that's who Izuku was, the guy who never stopped believing. "So….Mako….have you given any thought about what you want to do now?" Nolan broached. His son looked up to his dad a he took a sip of his drink through the straw, "I know it's only been a day, and you more then enough time to think over what you want but-"
"Actually dad….I want to be like you." he said, making his dad stop his drink. "I mean. I want to be a hero because….well I got these powers, and I should use them to help people. I mean, I've been reading comic books since I learned how to read. And honestly helping people like that? Like you? That's…..really what I want." he admitted.
Nolan gave his son a proud smile. "Ok then…..well, first step would probably be a hero school….got one in mind?"
Mako recalled Bakugo's words from yesterday, boasting about how he'd be the first one from their school to ever attend U.A. academy. Am I really going to choose what school I want to go to out of spite? he asked himself.
….No….but it's just an added bonus. he decided.
Flying back to Japan had left Mako completely wiped for the rest of the day, his whole body felt sore, but in a good way. And thankfully by the time morning came around it was gone. As well, he had finally come up with the best way to tell Izuku that his powers had come in, "I want you to take this metal bat, and hit me with it as hard as you possibly can." Mako said to his friend outside of their school complex, causing Izuku's jaw to go slack.
"WHAT?!" his friend barked out in disbelief.
Mako's grin didn't falter once, "You. Take bat. Hit me." he simplified, pointing the end of the bat at Izuku who shook his head.
"N-no! Why would I do that?!" Izuku asked him, eyeing the bat, "Is that even yours?"
"Someone on the baseball team didn't clean up after themselves, now look-" he started to continue.
"What the hell are you two morons doing?" the two friends turned to see Bakugo, each of them having two different reactions to the sight of the blonde bully. Izuku's was the expected one of trepidation and fear, while Mako's was utter delight, which made the blonde blink at them skeptically.
"Oh my god this is perfect! You. Dickhead. Hit me with this!" he said, holding up the bat at Bakugo, the blonde looking between him and the bat in agitated disbelief.
"The fucking-what the fuck is wrong with you?!" he shouted at the half Viltrumite as Izuku gawked at his friend, starting to become worried by his friend's behavior. All day long Mako looked, well, pleased with himself. He was going to ask during their lunch break as to why but instead this happened!
Mako grinned, and it pissed Bakugo off, "Ok, you know what? Fair enough." he said before tossing the bat, Bakugo's and Izuku's eyes widened as the bat flew out of his hand, over the fence, and into the baseball field all the way to the home plate. Izuku looked between the home plate and his friend is disbelief, but Mako however was more interested in Bakugo's stunned expression. And ever so slowly, it turned to rage, "Guess who finally has his powers asshole?" he asked.
Katsuki's hands lifted up, clenching empty air as a few small explosions popped off, "I…..YOU….FUCKING….HOW?!" he barked out.
Mako folded his arms across his chest, "Been telling you for years man, they'd come in late. But they're finally here." he said cockily. Looking over his shoulder to Izuku, his friend was beaming with fascination. He had been telling Izuku this for years as well, but unlike Bakugo he never doubted him, so the look on Bakugo's face made all those years of waiting worth it. Or at least that's what Mako thought before the other students in the area started talking.
"Holy crap did you see that?!"
"Wait so Mako's always had a quirk?"
"Man, I wish I had that! That's a shoe-in for U.A. for sure!"
"And I thought Bakugo had a strong quirk."
If Mako's smirk was any wider he'd split his head apart, Bakugo growled before yelling, "HE'S STILL A LOSER LIKE THE REST OF YOU!" he shouted, making the other students around them jump before turning to Mako, "AND YOU! IF YOU EVEN THINK ABOUT APPLY TO U.A. I'LL BLOW YOU STRAIGHT TO HELL YOU GOT THAT?!" he asked, a explosion ripping out of both his palms into the air.
The other student yawned, "Yeah, yeah, sure. Whatever." he said, waving him off.
Bakugo wanted to kill him, he wanted to kill him, he wanted to stuff his hand down the bastard's throat and let out an explosion but he obviously couldn't do that because it'd ruin his chances of getting into U.A. He cast a sharp look over at Dkeu, the green haired boy taking a few steps back from Mako as a precaution. Scoffing at the half alien teen, he stomped away, trying not to crack his teeth from how hard he was grinding them against one another.
As he walked off, Mako turned around to Izuku, "That was, the single greatest thing I have ever done. In my life." he said before laughing, Izuku running his hands through his hair in disbelief at what his friend had done to Bakugo.
He just humiliated him! In front of everyone! Izuku thought dizzily, "When did this happen?!" he asked as Mako wiped a tear away that was building up in the corner of his eye. "I mean you always said that you would developpowerslikeyourfatherbutIassumeditwouldn'tbeforsometimeduetoyourhumansideand-" he began muttering before Mako clapped his hands together, snapping him out of it. "When?!" he asked again.
"Day before yesterday! I was taking out the trash and when I pitched the bag it went flying off into space!" he said excitedly. He quickly shrugged, "Ok maybe not space, but pretty far." he admitted. "Oh! Speaking of, guess who flew all the way to Hawaii yesterday for, what my dad says, are the best hotdogs on the planet?" he asked.
Izuku looked flabbergasted before he retrieved his notebook from his bag and flipped to a blank page, "How long did it take you? How do you fly precisely? I can probably look up the distance from here to Hawaii on my phone, wait are you as fast as your dad or not?' he asked in a rapid fire succession as Mako raised his hands and waved them with a lighthearted smile.
"Izuku, chill! I'll tell you everything, but we're gonna be late." he said, nodding towards the school, shocking Izuku out of his questionnaire and quickly joining Mako in rushing to class.
Sitting down in his seat, Mako was immediately the new center of attention with word having spread of his show of power outside the school. However the teacher quieted the class down and continued on with their lesson for the day, but nothing could dampen the high that Mako was currently on.
When school finally ended, Mako's desk was swarmed by the students of his class, "I didn't know that you could do that!" one of the boys who would pull his eyes out of his head with his quirk said. "Yeah, I'd kill for a quirk that powerful." a girl who could produce gusts of wind said longingly. Mako looked around at the crowd surrounding him with a proud smile, being the center of attention wasn't something that he was used to but now? He could somewhat understand why Bakugo was the way he was….to a very small degree.
"Thanks, I haven't really tested out what I can do with it, I just know I'm really strong and can fly." he explained, making some of the students eyes widen and praise the that his power was multi faceted as well. Outside the circle however, Izuku tried to get a look at Mako but one of the male students who could stretch his neck up further then normal was in front of him.
"Um, excuse me-" he began.
The other student turned to him and rolled his eyes at him, "Look Midoriya, you've been talking to him for years, give us a chance huh?" he asked, making Izuku look down with shame. Standing up from his desk, he started to make his way towards the door when Mako saw him get up to leave between two of the students.
"Hey Mako, you want to hit up the arcade after school?" one of them asked, the group of students all murmuring in agreement of the idea.
"Oh uhh…sure, just let me ask Izuku if he wants to tag along." he answered, causing everyone around to shift uncomfortably. Mako looked around unsurealy and asked, "What?"
"I mean…..I get he's our friend and all but….do we have to?" one of them asked.
Mako's mood shifted instantly, "What does that mean?" he asked.
"Well it's just…he doesn't really fit in." one of the girls replied, the others giving sounds of agreement. Mako meanwhile was shocked by the sudden turn until he remembered, Izuku was quirkless…..and there wasn't some chance of him getting powers like he did.
I was so caught up in the high of this that I…..oh man I am such an asshole. he thought to himself. Looking around himself, he frowned distastefully before grabbing his bag. "On second thought, me and Izuku have plans." he said swiftly as he stood from his seat and made his way through the crowd of students and quickly ran out the door and turned down the hall to see his friend walking to the stairwell, "Hey man wait up!" he called as he ran after him.
Izuku stopped and turned around in surprise to see his friend, "Sorry about that. So, you got your notebook?" he asked as he walked alongside his friend towards the stairwell. Midoriya was taken aback by Mako's sudden re-appearance but smiled, touched by his friend's sincerity.
"Y-Yeah. So, I looked it up during class and it's little over 4,100 miles from Japan to Hawaii. So how long did it take you to get there?" he asked as he pulled out his notebook and a pen.
Mako leaned his head back as he tried to remember, "Ok that's kind of tricky because like halfway through there I got tired, but about….six or seven hours?" he estimated.
Midoriya hummed in thought as he jolted it down, "Ok so….wait did you consider time zones for that?" he asked, Mako sighed before shaking his head, "Ok then so probably longer then that. But still that's impressive! It'd take five and a half hours to get there at Mach 1 speeds like Captain Celebrity. And your dad can do it in half that time." he praised, making Mako smile.
"Thanks….wait how do you know the speed of Mach 1?" he asked.
Izuku flipped through his book to the Heroine Outrun, a south African heroine who wore a white and yellow track suit and sneakers, "Outrun was able to run at that speed when she first debuted! I think she can go faster now but I can't be sure how fast." he explained as they exited the front of the school.
Mako gave the notebook and impressed look, "I always forget how deep you go into it with your hero notes. Oh! My dad also mentioned that I should coast on my flight so that I let my momentum carry me sometimes." he added.
Izuku nodded as he added that fact to the book, "Huh, interesting, I wonder how you can fly. I'd think it's something like an emitter type quirk that can push you through the air." he theorized as he used the end of his pen to rub the side of his head in confusion. He had asked Omni Man himself if people on his planet possibility developed the same quirk, since they're hereditary by nature on Earth. Nolan however pointed out that his people have always had their abilities and didn't evolve into them, saying that while their powers are genetic like quirks, he doubts that they can be correlated.
"Dad mentioned that we can control our own leverage if that helps explain it." he replied before snapping his fingers, "Oh! Right, I didn't tell you! I'm going to work on getting my flying license. Then…..well I'm gonna apply to U.A." he informed. He risked looking over to Izuku, the worst thing he feared was a look of betrayal, that he would be stealing what his own goal was.
But instead what he was met with was excitement, "Th-That's great!" Izuku exclaimed, he opened his mouth, as though he wanted to say more but he stopped himself. "I'm….I'm gonna work hard to get into U.A. too!" he declared with pride.
Mako was taken slightly aback by his friend's declaration, part of him knew that the odds were against him. But looking into the determination of his friend's emerald eyes somehow made those odds seem inconsequential, so he shared a smile and raised his fist to his friend. "I shouldn't have expected anything less." he admitted, Izuku raising his hand and bumping his fist into Mako's.
Izuku's phone suddenly chimed, reaching into his pocket, Izuku saw the time and his eyes widened, "Oh no! Uh, I need to go Mako. But I'll message you later, I need to go!" he said before taking off in a rush. "I'll finish your notes later!" he yelled as he ran off down the road, Mako pursing his lips together in exasperation at his friend's priorities.
I mean I shouldn't be surprised considering he's on volume 14 of his hero notes.
4 Months Later
Mako's day after his and Izuku's declaration to attend U.A. together became fairly simple, get up, go to school, get home, wait for dad, and fly high for hour. On the weekends he would study the rules of flying and then go out for low altitude flight for a while, avoid no fly zones that were made public. Overall he had made pretty good progress, he had more then enough low altitude hours stocked up, and was close to reaching the required fifty high altitude. However he had discovered a few key facts about flying that he never really thought of before getting his powers with some trials and errors.
First and foremost, the higher you go, the harder it is to breathe. he learned that the hard way when his fight time at high altitude he passed out from lack of oxygen and fell, his dad catching him before he could crash into anything. His father gave him a simple solution with taking deep breaths and holding it for a while, something that was easy to do for viltrumites since they had extended lung capacities.
Secondly, he wasn't allowed to fly at certain speeds in public areas, his father demonstrated this by taking him to the deserts of Egypt and having him fly as fast as he could near the ground, which caused a sandstorm behind him. Even though he wasn't as fast as his father yet, the force he caused by flying at supersonic speeds could be dangerously devastating for urban environments.
And thirdly…there was just no comfortable way to carry people while flying.
"This is humiliating." Mako stated as his father carried him like a hero would a damsel in distress through the air, his father trying his hardest not to snort out in laughter as they flew over the coastline of Japan. "If a drone sees us I'm breaking it." he said as he slipped out of his father's grasp and began flying on his own below him before rising up beside him, his arms stretched out in front of him.
"Well, you asked me what the best way to carry someone is." Nolan replied with a shrug as they continued towards a small beach covered with trash, perfect place to practice landing. Touching down on the beach first, Nolan looked up to watch as Mako lifted his legs up, approaching the ground fast before smoothly slowing down and gently landing on the sand, a small could dusting up around him. Nolan smirked, "Been practicing I see."
Mako nodded, "Yeah, took a while but I'm no longer making craters in the Earth." he said proudly, turning around and looking out to the glistening sea. "So, that brings us to….40 hours. Give or take time zones." he said, Nolan chuckling in agreement. Taking a moment to look around, Mako winced at the sight of the Beach, "Was there always a landfill here?" he asked.
Nolan sighed in exasperation, "No. This used to be a nice beach if I remember right." he took a look around, disappointment clear on his face, "Of course, humans didn't really care how nice it was here, they just wanted somewhere to put all their trash." he said with dissatisfaction as Mako walked over to a old industrial refrigerator door. Picking it up in his hands by the side, he easily lifted it up. Pushing his hands together the steel bent under his hands and the sides folded inward before he did the same with the upper and bottom portions of the door, making a compact cube from it.
"What was-Oh!" the two turned their heads in surprise to find Izuku looking out from around a corner of the trash, who looked just as shocked to see them. "Mako! Mr. Metuki! What are you two doing here?" he asked as he approached the father and son in a jog.
Nolan smiled welcomingly to his son's friend as he put a hand on Mako's shoulder, "Getting some fly time in. What are you doing here?" he asked curiously.
Izuku looked over at the section of trash pile beside him with a nervous expression, "W-Well, I want to apply to U.A. in the fall, and so for training I'm…well I'm cleaning up this beach." he explained, making both Mako and Nolan's eyes widen.
Mako was the first to recover, "I….wait a second!" he said before flying up to get a better look at the beach, "Holy shit!" he exclaimed when he saw a chunk of the beach having been cleaned off. Landing back down he gave his friend a stupefied look, "How long have you been doing this!?" he asked.
Izuku thought for a second, "Um, about four months I believe."
Nolan blinked, "I….um…..huh…..that's certainly…..commitment my boy." he replied, his words of the mess seeming somewhat overly harsh now.
Izuku nodded with determination, "I've also been changing my diet so that I have more nutritional meals that will help my development." he added before a thoughtful expression came over him, "I still need to make sure academically mygradesdon'tdipsoIcanstillapplybutIdon'tthinkIshouldworryaboutthatconsidering-" he trailed off into a tangent as the father and son both shared a look. Izuku's murmuring was noting new to those who knew him, Mako counted down from five with his fingers, with Izuku realizing he was talking when he reached zero, "S-Sorry!" he apologized.
Mako waved him off, "Pal, your fine. It's honestly really cool that your doing this." he said, looking over at the pile of garbage. He was really working hard to get into U.A. and while his time learning how to fly was important, he suddenly felt like he needed to catch up. "Hey dad, let's finish it today." he suddenly said, his father raising a brow, "Ten hours left until I reach my goal right?" he asked.
Nolan chuckled as he shook his head, "Alright, we'll try." he agreed, his son smiling as he turned to his friend.
"See you around man, and good luck!" he said before taking off into the air, the sand beneath him bowling back as Izuku was fit with a gust of wind from the take off. Looking up he saw his friend fly higher and higher into the sky.
Nolan turned to him and gave him a grateful look, "Good luck Izuku." he said before shooting off into he sky much faster then his son did, the force almost making the green haired teen fall over.
The next week, Mako was showing his flying license to Izuku proudly as they walked out of school, Izuku looking at the piece of plastic with an awestruck look in his eyes. "Wow." he squeaked out excitedly as Mako beamed with pride. Handing it back to his friend, Mako slipped it into his wallet as his friend asked, "So what are you going to do now?"
"Well I was thinking I could fly us to the States, we could check out the superhero hall of fame." he posed, making Izuku stop dead in his tracks to look at him in disbelief. "I can fly over there in a few hours, take a tour of the hall and then zip back over here in like the same day." he reasoned, Izuku's eyes getting watery at the proposition, "Wait no don't-" Mako started before tears shot out of Izuku's eyes like a sprinkler, "Oh come on man we talked about this!" he exclaimed as the green haired teen's tears of joy doused him.
Quickly wiping his tears away, he looked at Mako with a touched look, "You'd really do that with me? That's so nice!" he exclaimed. Mako shrugged nonchalantly, but Izuku shook his head, "But I was actually talking about your training." he added sheepishly.
Mako rubbed the back of his head unsurely, "See I don't know, I was hoping you'd offer me some advice on that." he explained.
Izuku's eyes focused in thought, while Mako's powers were basic in terms of what he could do, they were nonetheless fairly powerful already. He had told Izuku that he could lift a hundred tons with barely any strain to himself. "Well, given that your abilities are so powerful already, I think the best thing you could do is come up with ways to use them." he suggested. "For instance, with your strength your biggest concern will probably be pulling your punches." he reasoned.
The human hybrid nodded in agreement. "Yeah that's what I was thinking, I could accidently knock some poor guy's head off if I'm not careful." he stated, thinking back to the steel door he easily folded with his bare hands with a little effort, looking down at his hands. He had broken two phones in the time he's had his power and that was without really even trying to. "So how would I do that? I mean how do I practice fighting without risking someone's life?" he asked his friend.
Izuku rubbed his chin in thought, "Well…..maybe if you use something stronger then what a person is as practice?" he preposed before an idea came to mind. "I know that people without quirks can break concrete if they're precise and powerful enough…maybe that?" he guessed.
The idea wasn't bad in theory, but this was something he needed to figure out, he had tried asking his dad about it but it wasn't like he could practice with his dad like he had been flying, if they spared it'd be him against someone much stronger then him, he'd probably have to try and really hurt his dad to do any real damage and that was the last thing he wanted. "Maybe." he replied before his phone alerted him to a message. Pulling it out of his pocket, he unlocked his screen and saw a message from his dad.
'Meet me above the house.' it read.
Turning to Izuku he gave him a grateful look, "I gotta fly, thanks for the suggestion Izuku." he said gratefully, his friend nodding as Mako pocketed his phone. "Good luck with your training today." he said encouragingly as he ran a few feet away before taking off into the air and flew towards home, making it to his apartment building within a few minutes where he saw his dad hovering in the sky.
Skimming over the deck of their penthouse, he dropped his backpack off before flying up to his dad, "Hey dad, what's up?' he asked.
His father smirked at him, "Follow me, try and keep up." he said evasively before flying off to the East and gaining altitude, Mako flying off after him up into the sky. When they reached above the clouds, Mako took deep breaths for the thinner air as his father coasted through the sky, Mako accelerated to his full speed briefly to catch up with his dad, "Surprised you weren't home within a minute of letting school out." he said in amusement.
Mako shrugged his shoulders, "Me and Izuku were talking, I was asking him how pros try and pull their punches so they don't hurt anyone. He suggested trying to not damage concrete too bad." he explained, Nolan humming in consideration.
"Oh that's what you meant, yeah you need a baseline for humans. Something that you can basically limit how hard you hit with your strength." he reasoned. "Villains make it tricky though, some are more durable then others and can sometimes be frustrating." he explained.
Mako groaned at how annoying that sounded, "That sounds so frustrating."
Nolan rolled in his eyes, "*TT*, you have no idea. I remember one time, this one villain I faced? His powers was being rubber. So no matter how hard I hit him? He wouldn't go down." he explained. His hands clenched together, "And he was such a dick about it too." he said aggravatingly.
"Did he do that thing where they go, 'Haha hero! Not so easy as you though huh?' " he asked, raising his fist and waving it as his changed the pitch of his voice.
His father pointed at him, "THAT. Exactly that." he said before chuckling, "I ended up ting his arms and legs o some streetlamps, got some training in when I used his head as a punching bag." he said in amusement, his son snorting at the mental image of his father using some villain's head like one of those rapid punching bags he saw in old movies.
Mako lost track of how long they were flying before his father changed his course and flew down, that's when Mako saw it, in the middle of the ocean was a gigantic, circular island that seemed to be steadily moving through the water. It's shape was clearly artificial with the huge walls encircling an elevated landmass. Around the other wall was a forest, and deeper inside was a lake with a triangular city strecture with smaller lakes and rivers within the shape, at each point of the triangular city, the urban setting bloomed out into Octagonal shapes. Mako knew this place from all the pictures Izuku had shown him of it, I-Island.
"Woah…." he murmured in amazement, the island was completely manmade, which as to be expected when almost every support agency had at least a few buildings on the island itself.
Nolan flew closer to him, smiling at his son's awe of the island, while what he said last week was true with how humans could pollute their planet, the island itself was proof that they could make amazing wonders as well. "Stick close! There's someone I want you to meet." he said as they flew down towards one of the more taller buildings that was easily eighty stories high. Coasting around the side of the skyscraper, they stopped outside an reflective window, Omni Man hovering over and gently knocking on the glass before it opened.
Flying inside, Nolan was met with a friendly face, "Thanks for letting us come in the back way David." he said as he approached a middle aged man in a lab coat. He had light brown hair that was unkept and wild with a patch of hair on his chin as well, he smiled at Omni Man before raising his hand for him to shake, "And for squeezing us in on such short notice." he added.
David smiled, "No problem Nolan, glad to see you again. New suit holding up ok?" he asked, giving the man's costume a once over.
Nolan lifted his hands, "I know I was skeptical but I really do like the full gloves, you were right about gripping not being a problem." he admitted, glexing his hands before turning to his son. "Mako this is David Shield, David, this is my son Mako." he introduced, Mako raising his hand and shaking David's politely.
"Nice to meet you Mister Shield." he greeted politely.
David smiled and nodded, "You too Mako, your father's told me all about you. Congratulations on the flying license by the way." he added.
Mako felt heat rise to his cheeks and turned to his dad, "So uh…what are we doing here?" he asked unsurely.
David gve Nolan an bemused look, "You didn't tell him?" he asked.
Nolan smiled and shrugged, "I didn't want to ruin the surprise." he said before tuning to his son. "Well since you worked so hard to get your license, I thought I'd get you a little something early." he explained.
Mako's confusion lasted a solid two seconds before shock enveloped his face, "No way…" he said before looking at David Shield and then back to his dad, "My-my own costume?!" he exclaimed.
Nolan smiled, "I think you put in a lot of work and you should be reward-OOPH!" he exclaimed as his son wrapped his arms around him and hugged him.
"Thank you so much!" he said, Nolan pausing before smiling and returning the embrace before pulling away while David chuckled at the sight. "Oh man I don't….." he trailed off before realizing that he had no idea what he wanted. "…have the slightest clue where to start." he finished.
David patted his shoulder, "That's perfectly fine. Um, before we start would you mind giving me and your father a minute to talk?" he asked. Nolan raised a eyebrow but David raised a hand dismissively, showing that it wasn't anything serious.
"Yeah, sure." he turned to the window but saw it was closed, "Umm…."
David snapped his fingers, "Oh! There's a vending machine down the hall." he said, pointing to the door, Mako hummed eagerly as he wouldn't turn down a after school snack for himself. Exiting the lab, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a few Yen. Approaching the machine, he browsed over the selection, slightly taken aback by the names of the various snacks being in English.
"Oh come on." he heard a groan beside him, turning his head he saw that at another one of the machines was a young woman. What immediately stood out to Mako was her full figure and long, wavy blonde hair that she had that went halfway down her back, with two shorter pieces of hair resting over her shoulders with her bangs swept to the side. She wore a pair of oval framed glasses over her teal colored eyes that were looking at the machine in front of her in distain.
She wore a white short sleeved dress shirt with plaid cuffs on the end of the sleeves with warm colors of red and yellow, with a matching bow around her neck. Over her shirt was a dark raspberry colored waistcoat with yellow buttons. She also wore a pair of pale grey capri pants with the same plaid pattered socks covering the rest of her feet down to her dark brown heeled boots.
She was attractive to say the least.
Leaning back, he saw the problem that she and at least everyone in her life at one point faced, the vending machine screwed her over! A bag of pretzels was wedged between the coil it was behind and the glass, there were only two choices one could face with such as problem. The first being to shake and bang on the machine and hoped it would fall, but whoever did that would officially be 'That person who went nuts on the vending machine', or pay double the price for a single snack…which was just plain evil.
The girl pouted at the machine as Mako approached, "Um, excuse me." he said, he turned to him with wide eyes, I might be able to help." he offered. The girl's surprised face quickly turned to a smile and took a step back as he walked up to the side and ever so gently, tipped the machine forward about 30 degrees until the bag was unstuck, which he then leaned back into place. Reaching inside he grabbed the bag and handed it to her, the blonde girl smiling appreciatively.
"Thank you so much!" she said happily.
Mako waved her off, "No problem, that happens to everyone. I can't use that trick on soda machines though, don't think that'd be safe." he said, the thought of him picking up and shaking the machine entering his mind.
She seemed to picture it as well from the way she snorted, "That's true." she agreed as she got a better look at him, confusion stretching over her face, "Um, forgive me for asking but. your not a student with the academy are you?" she asked. Mako binked in confusion before looking down and realizing he still had his school uniform on from earlier.
"Oh! No, no I'm not from around here, my dad just brought me here from school. I'm from Japan." he explained, the girl's eyes widening.
"Oh! You must be Omni Man's son!" she realized before raising her hand, "I'm Melissa! Melissa Shield, nice to meet you!" she greeted warmly, taking Mako off guard by how welcoming she was before he shook her hand.
"Mako. Nice to meet you too Melissa." he introduced himself. "I just met your dad, he seems like a cool guy." he said.
She smiled sweetly at his words, "Thanks, I think he is too." she said with pride. Mako couldn't help but chuckle before looking back at the machine and suddenly realizing something, "Um….do these things take Yen by chance?" he asked unsurely.
Melissa nodded, "Yeah actually, these vending machines take all forms of money, and they even adjust their prices based on the money that you put into it." she said, Mako looking at the simple machine he had just manhandled like a expensive computer. Seeing the look of concern she raised a hand, "Oh don't worry, that's nothing compared to some of the stuff that's being created here." she assured him.
He slowly nodded, "Ahhh, so there's even more expensive and irreplaceable equipment here that I need to be sure I don't break with my vending machine lifting strength." he joked, Melissa snorted in amusement. "Ah, that makes me feel much better." he said jokingly.
Melissa leaned her shoulder against the machine, "Oh don't worry, something explodes here at least three times a day. If you break something? You can probably get away with denying it." she joked back as she ate her pretzels. The two shared a nice laugh together before Melissa spoke, "My dad mentioned that you were coming to get a hero costume early, excited?" she asked, Mako seeing a mixture of curiosity and something….sad, in the expression she had when she asked him.
"Yeah but…honestly I have no idea what I want." he admitted, taking Melissa by surprise. Most if not everyone had some idea of what their costume would be, something simple as a drawing from elementary school or some who have gone over designs for years, everyone had an idea.
The blonde girl shared a sympathetic look with him, she knew creative frustration all too well, "I'm sure that it'll come to you eventually. I mean it takes a little while to design costumes, even for my papa." she assured him, making him smile at her words of encouragement.
"Oh what a coincidence!" both of them turned to see their fathers walking down the hall towards them. David smiled as his daughter walked up and gave him a smile, "Mako, me and your father talked it over, would you mind if someone else besides me designed your costume?" he asked, making Melissa look at him in confusion.
Mako however shrugged off the suggestion, "Not really? I mean don't get me wrong I apricate you being willing to but if you have something more pressing you need to work on then I get it." he replied nonchalantly. The fact he was getting a costume NOW was already a privilege to him, most had to wait until they got into a hero school before they could get a costume from a support company.
David laid a hand on his daughter's shoulder and gestured to her with another, "Well seeing as you've already met her, what about my daughter Melissa make it?" he offerd, his daughter seemingly thrown for a much a loop as Mako was when he first found out he was here for a costume.
"Eh!?" she squeaked out before looking at Mako, "I-I mean…..I haven't….well….I haven't designed a full costume before and….well, I haven't been….at my best lately." she admitted embarrassingly. Her grades had taken a noticeable dip so far into the semester and it had been affecting her lately, and someone trusting her with their first ever hero costume didn't sound like the best idea.
Mako watched the discomfort on Melissa's face, she spared him a glance and he smiled at her, "I wouldn't mind at all. I mean I'm not apply for U.A. for another six months, and my summer vacation is coming up soon." he said nonchalantly.
Melissa didn't seem as convinced, "Are….you sure?" she asked, "Because…..well…..this would be my first time doing something like this." she admitted.
"Same here, I mean I don't even know what I want yet. So maybe you can help me figure that out?" he preposed. Melissa was taken aback by the faith he seemed to have in her, slowly her concern and trepidation gave way to a soft smile.
"Alright then! I'll do my best." she agreed, raising her hand which Mako shook in agreement.
It had been two months until summer started for Mako and Izuku, and while Izuku trained, Mako did as well…..or tried to anyway. His dad had at the very least shown him the basics of fighting hand to hand, throwing a punch with his arm wouldn't be as strong as punching someone with his shoulder involved for example.
Aside from that, he and Melissa had officially begun working on his costume which….was still a work in progress. "Ok…be honest….what do you think?" Melissa asked Mako as he looked over the costume she had made for him over the past week since they saw each other.
The costume that Mako had on currently was a form fitting costume, it was bright yellow on the torso that taperd off to the waist where it stretched around and connected in the back. The yellow also went down the sides of his legs to his knees and to the same shade of boots he wore. The same yellow also started at his elbows and went down to his hands to where his fingerless gloves were. On his biceptsm inner legs, and sides, the remaining costume was a warm brown color, with various yellow discs on the shoulders, and a large one on where the belt buckle would be.
On his head he wore a pair of yellow glasses that rest against his face and covered his eyes, looking himself over in the mirror of her workshop, Mako hummed as he looked it over, "Well….the colors are a good combo…" he trailed off and saw Melissa standing behind him in the mirror, her hands across her chest.
"Mako. Be honest." she asked him firmly.
"I don't know, about the orange and yellow. I mean, it sings…but I don't think it's the tune I'm looking for." he replied honestly, watching her reflection deflate slightly form his critique, "And what's with all these weird disc things?" he asked, tapping the one on his belt as he turned around to look at his designer and her lab.
The lab itself was fairly spacious, in the center of the rooms tood a desk with carious cloths of varying colors and tools for creating costumes, on one side of it was her school desk that had a holographic screen and keyboard, which he thought was the coolest thing ever and she agreed, and on the other side was another desk with a robotic arm mounted on a platform beside it for more finer work that she couldn't do by hands.
Beisde her desk was a bookshelf with various textbooks on it, and on the opposite wall of that was a large toolbox that was just as tall as the bookshelf with various tools, screws, and other miscellaneous things used for crafting. A few more machines lined the walls to the door of the room but Mako hadn't seen what they could do yet.
Melissa groaned asshe plopped down in her desk chair, "I put that together before you told me your powers weren't solar based." she admitted.
Mako walked over to a chair against the wall and sat down, "I still don't know why you assumed that, but your not the first one to weirdly enough." he said positively, Melissa managing a small smile at his consolation. Reaching up he took off the goggles covering his eyes, "I like these though, when I'm flying it helps keep things out of my eyes. You have no idea how many times I've had a fly go down my throat." he said, the two both gagging at the thought before silence settled over them. "I'm sorry." he apologized.
Melissa looked up at him confused, "Sorry? For what? My designs just aren't good." she said sadly as she looked at the table where her supplies were at.
The viltrumite sat up straight and looked at her, "Woah what?! No! This is a good design, it's just…well, not for me." he said as he gestured to his costume with his hand. "I'm just being picky."
Melissa shook her head, "No, your not." she said with a understanding smile, "You just want it to be right. There's nothing wrong with that." she assured.
"Maybe….but still, you shouldn't put yourself down like that." he replied, the blonde girl looked at him skeptically, "I mean you can make stuff like this, I can't even sew." he said, tugging at the fabric of the costume. Melissa seemed to drink in his praise and let herself smile a little, "Seriously…..I mean without my powers? I'm…..well I'm kind useless." he admitted.
Melissa pursed her lips together as he continued, "I….I didn't get my powers until six months ago. Until then I was basically quirkless" he revealed, making her teal eyes widen at the admission. "My dad said that they would come in eventually, but that was when I was like….five. So…" he trailed off.
"You've been waiting that long?" Melissa asked in a small voice, he nodded and the thought seemed almost cruel to consider. "Well…..at least you finally got one." she said on a positive note. Mako smiled, and she looked over at the table where the rest of the materials where, "Did I tell you I was quirkless?" she asked, her voice not showing an ounce of shame by the fact. She turned to him with a bashful smile, "I always get sympathy for it but honestly I don't think I should get any, I might not have a quirk but I can do….well like you said. I can do this." she said, tilting her head to her worktable while Mako stared at her in surprise.
She titled her head back into place so she was looking directly at him with a smile, "So….I don't think your useless. I don't think anyone is, I think you just need to figure out what it is that your good at and enjoy doing." she suggested.
Mako's shocked features turned to a thoughtful one, he then smiled, "I like helping people…..like old comic book superheroes." he admitted, his cheeks turning a little red. It didn't help when he heard Melissa snort at him.
He looked up and gave her a look, she raised both her hands, "Hey that's fine! It's a good thing to want to help…..wait a minute…." she trailed off as the gears in her head started turning. She suddenly stood up, her chair rolling back, "I got it!" she suddenly exclaimed, making Mako jump in his seat as she turned to her computer and tapped the desktop, making the holographic screen and keys appear.
"Got what?" he asked as he stood up.
Melissa turned to him with a large smile, "Your costume, you want it to be iconic right?" she asked, "Just like those superheroes in comic books! Of course, why didn't I think of it before?" she asked herself as she tapped a button, making a projection of her screen appear on the wall opposite of where the door to the room was.
Melissa grabbed a electric marker and walked over as a scanned version of him that she took appeared. "Ok, what do you like about the suit so far? Eye coverings right?" she asked before taking the marker and writing that down in the margin next to the scan of him.
Mako nodded, "Yeah, oh! I also like the gloves." he said, raising his hands to emphasize it.
Melissa nodded, "Alright, good, I could add a cape like your dad's if you wanted, but I think that might create drag during flight." she offered. Mako thought for a moment before he shook his head, "Alright then, the layout of this, what it covers, is that fine?" she asked. He nodded again, Melissa was about to write it when she paused, "Oh, what about a mask?" she asked.
Mako cupped his chin, "Huh…..never really thought about it before." he admitted, a mask would be pretty cool. "I could see that. But the goggles-" he asked as he raised them in his hand.
Melissa smiled, "I could integrate them into the mask, that way you don't need to worry about them falling off." she preposed.
Mako nodded at the idea, a smile growing on his face, "Oh yeah that's a good point. Um….could you have my hair be exposed to?" he asked. Melissa titled her head questionably, "It's…..it's nice to have the wind blowing through it." he sheepishly admitted.
The inventor nodded in understanding before adding that to her list, "Alright then so…." she said to herself before moving to the 3D model with her marker and changed the setting on it to an editor. With a few clicks, the discs on the model was gone, she changed the colors to simple black and white, so the brown was black and the yellow white. She then added a ask that went around his forehead that connected to the goggles, stepping away she and Mako observed it. "That more like it?" she asked hopefully.
Mako beamed at her, "Yeah I-I mean I don't have a exact picture in my mind but this is….yeah this is much closer I think." he said as he walked around the model and looked at himself. With some finer tweaking, this could probably be close to what his final costume would be. "Melissa, thank you so much I can't even…." he began.
The girl smiled as she shook her head, "It's fine. I should be thanking you…..when you were talking it just sorta clicked…." she said as she touched the side of her head. Turning to the model she smiled with pride, "Honestly? I really needed this." she admitted, Mako gave her a confused look which she noticed. "I….wasn't doing to well with my classes here when we met." she admitted.
Mako shrugged, "Well that's fine, I mean I'm not perfect. My English is good but my geography is…..well I can recognize Japan from really high up."
Melissa gave him a look, "That's not….reassuring." she said before shaking her head, "But what I mean is….when you let me work on this I was nervous with how I'd been doing in school but the more I worked on it? The better I started doing in my school." she explained.
Mako blinked, his face showing that he didn't totally see the correlation. She noticed and further explained, "When we make support items here, we need to approach the task that we're give creatively. And I love that as part of my work but…..after a while I just sort of…..run out of it." she carefully explained, trying her best to put into words what she had felt. "Like I know what I want to do, but I can't just….think of HOW to do it."
Mako frowned at the description, "That sounds hard. I mean….can't you take a break?" he asked.
She nodded, "Of course, and that helps but when I get back to work on that one goal? It still may not come out." she told him before looking at the costume model, "But this? This was…..there wasn't any pressure to it, I mean, you didn't put any on me." she said, quickly turning to him. "I just put some pressure on myself, not like my schoolwork but enough that I wanted to do this the best that I could do." she said proudly. "And because of that? I was able to carry that feeling into my schooling so I didn't run out because I could always come back to this." she explained.
Mako slowly nodded as he begun to understand what she was talking about, "Well I'm glad I could help you…you want to take a break?" he asked her. Melissa turned to him in surprise, "I could run and grab a bite to eat, what are you in the mood for?" he offered.
She shook her head, "I'm fine, I don't need-" she began before her stomach growled. Her face turned a little red, "…..alright maaaybe something." she surrendered, Mako smiling knowingly in response. "What were you thinking?"
Mako shook his head, "You pick, you're the one working hard today. And you deserve a little something." he refused politely.
Melissa smiled at the offer and through, "Well, I wouldn't mind a burrito, with chicken and cheese." she admitted.
Mako smiled, "I'll be back frm Mexico within two hours!" he said happily before taking off out through her lab door.
Melissa blinked as she registered what he said, "Wait a second what?!"
After grabbing a late lunch for them, Mako returned and relaxed with Melissa for a while before heading hope later, but not before Melissa asked for something important, she needed a name for him.
Mako had spent all night trying to think one up but so far he had nothing. "Stills stuck on it?" Nolan asked his son as he hovered behind him in his regular clothes before reeling his hand back with a baseball in it and throwing it forward. Mako looked over his shoulder and nodded, "I don't blame you, it's something every hero has to do."
Mako nodded, "Yeah…." he replied simply.
Nolan frowned, "What's up?" he asked with concern.
Mako shook his head, "It's nothing I just…this still is surreal." he said as he looked down to their penthouse hundreds of feet below them. "I was about ready to give on my powers ever coming in." he admitted before looking down at his catcher's glove. "And when they did I just…..it felt like I was just dreaming, like this was too good to be true." he explained, looking over at his father. Nolan wore a firm but understanding look, "And with Izuku training, Melissa working so hard…..what have I done other then just wait around for this? What if I get to U.A. and I just…..don't make the cut?" he asked.
He let the question hang in the air along with them, even Bakugo for all his bluster had been training for his chance to get into U.A. and here he was, just getting his powers ten months before the exam. It felt like he was cheap….a imitation of what someone who should get into the school was.
"Do you hear it?" his dad asked. Mako could, a feint wistling that was startin to get louder.
"Yeah." he nodded.
"Get ready." Nolan said as he looked over his shoulder, Mako raising his glove up, ahead of him he saw a small shape flying at him. Raising his glove up he caught the baseball his dad had thrown around the world within his glove. The impact sending him back through the air for a yard before stopping past his father, "Where you scared?" he asked.
His son picked the ball out of his glove, "A little, yeah." he admitted.
"But you caught it." his father pointed out, gesturing to the ball in his hand, "Being a superhero is no different." he replied. "This is the beginning of a long journey for you and me." he said, gesturing between them with his hand before hitting it against his mitt. "And along the way your gonna need to do things you don't wanna do, or might not think you can do." he said as Mako glanced away.
"It's ok to be scared, natural to have doubts. But if you can push through that? And do what needs to be done? You'll be just fine." he said assuringly as he smiled at his son. "Think you can do that?" he asked, glancing down a the ball. Mako looked ahead to where the ball came from, reeling his arm back, he dipped backwards in the air before swinging his body forward and throwing his arm as hard as he could, the ball shooting through the air.
And then the quiet set in again, Mako and his father stood for a few seconds before they once again heard the whistling noise. Nolan smirked as he raised his glove and caught the ball, not moving at all from the impact, turning to his son, Mako saw the heat coming off the ball he had thrown from how fast it had been going. "Son, kids your age think they're invincible, and it holds them back. Makes them careless. The thing is….your different." he said, reaching down and picking up the ball from his mitt without winicing from the heat.
Passing it to Mako, he took it in his hands and he too felt no pain, "You, actually are, Invincible."
Mako looked down at the ball as a light bulb flashed in his head.
Melissa's tongue poked out of her mouth as she carefully set the computer chip down on the circuit board that she was working on. Pressing it down with a small 'click', she let out a sigh before there was a loud knock on the door that made her lean up from her desk and turn to it, "It's open!" she called out before the door slid apart, Mako in the doorway and seemingly out of breath, but a confident smirk on his face.
"I got it." he announced.
Melissa let out a small gasp before standing up and smiling excitedly, "Alright then! Let's get to work!" she declared. The door closed shut behind him as he began to collaborate with Melissa, just missing a pair of men in lab coats rush past her workshop.
"Are you sure he's here?!" one of them asked the other.
"I'm positive I just saw him-there he is! David!" the other man called out as David Shield walked out of one of the labs. The lead researcher turned to the fellow scientists with curiosity, however it changed to concern when he saw the dire expressions they both had.
"Rob, Ryan, What's wrong?" he asked them.
"Did you hear?" Rob asked.
David shook his head, "Calm down, what happened?" he asked.
Ryan pushed his friend aside, "It's all over the news, the U.S.A. Hero Safety Commission it's-it's gone!" he exclaimed.
Disbelief was his first reaction, "Wha-what do you mean gone?!" he asked.
"I mean gone! There was some sort of explosion, I don't know but everyone who was there is dead! The whole block got incinerated." Robert explained direly as he pulled out his phone and showed him the news footage in Washington D.C. where now a crater laid where the Public Safety Commission once stood.
Christopher Skyline, Better known to the world as Captain Celebrity was racing back home to America, his wife, Pamela was thankfully in Japan with his agent visiting when he got the news. "Celebrity!" a voice called out, turning his head back he saw as Omni Man flew caught up to him, flying at an equal speed, "I just heard! How can I help?" he asked as the two flyers shot through the clouds towards the United States.
The No.1 Hero of America shook his head, "I don't know, until we get there and see the damage…..I don't know if anyone even survived." he said grimly.
Omni Man frowned, "Is there any word on what happened? Could someone with a quirk do this?" he asked.
Christopher shook his head, "No, nothing yet. I've heard everything from someone with a Quirk gone haywire to some sort of gas line explosion, nobody knows what it is."
"Ok….good."
"What do you mean-URGH!" Skyline choked out as a fist erupted through his chest, his torn heart and shattered ribs dropping into the dark water of the ocean below. The wooshing wind around him stopped, he could barely feel anything as he slowly turned his head to Omni Man, whose hand had reached behind him to deliver the blow.
"Bu…..but….why…."
Omni Man looked firmly into his eyes as he grabbed his shoulder with one hand and yanked his other, now bloody hand free, the hero's lungs slipping out through the new cavity in his chest before Skyline fell out of the air and down into the ocean below. Omni Man flew down to the body as it began to sink into the water, staring at his own hardened reflection in the water.
"You know…..I never really liked you."
wolfpackx92: Yes you are, congratulations!
Shadow-Proclimation8: I can't spoil but hopefully this at least partially answers your question.
itsyaboi2525: I'll try my best to keep updating at a good rate!
Maelstrom Ressurected: I think I answered this but it's actually Image comics tht made invincible, Dark Horse didn't. But they are the ones who did star wars before Disney bought them.
Awesomerebel55:Oh man you have no idea.
Avenger: Hope the wait was worth it!
Red: Omni Man is tricky because he's not subject to one nation or country, and we never really see or hear about a global ranking system. But I'd put him around where All Might is because…..even by Viltrumite Standards, All Might is pretty fucking strong. Dude can punch so hard he makes a tornado. And Izuku is going to be even stronger then that.
Skylargillialan: Oops.
Wizardwolf 1020: Well Invincible is clever because just being able to punh harder doesn't mean your stronger, I eman 13 might be able to kill them because they can make a black hole, doesn't matter how strong you are, that's gonna kill ya.
Guest 1: Hell Yes it is.
Barry: Right?! I mean I love the animated series but come on, Invincible has been around since 2003, how does it not have it's own comic book tab?
Chris04cano: Thank you! I apricate it.
Guest 2: What? No Mako is sixteen/seventeen in this chapter, I must not have made that clear, sorry! That's my bad. But yeah Mako isn't as strong as his comic book counterpart because he hasn't been able to push himself that much like in the comic where he's actively a superhero.
And honestly I think Omni Man and All Might could be near equal in strength.
For'Sleep: I mean you'll have to wait to see, but AfO does have a role to play in this.
: Yup! It's a great fic1 Firewolf2132 on Ao3! This fic is over there as well!
D3lph0xL0v3r: Yeah I can't wait to get into that can of worms XD
Messiah of authors: Well Mako is like 17 himself, and even then two or three years isn't much of a age difference. I mean in real life the rule of thumb is half your age plus 7 years. So even then 16 is ok.
Guest 3: he's sixteen / seventeen, a year older than Bakugou. And he's five and a half feet tall.
Pervy Sage: I…..don't completely understand but I thin I see what you mean?
GodsReader15: I am!
Luke5921: Here you go!
Guest 4: Oh, I cannot wait to see that in the show too! Here….well it'll probably be sooner then later.
shekhawatdigvijay00: No, no. Izuku and Mako aren't attached to the hip, it's just because this explores the one day and for most of it he and Izuku are together.
Guest 5: Oh it has a key thing, I just didn't mention it because it slipped my mind.
