Initiation
It had been on every channel for the past week, the Public Safety Commission for the United States had been decimated. Where once the government building stood now was a crater in the ground, Kali's hands were folded together as she watched the news from the living room couch. On the TV she saw Nolan, as well as a number of other heroes, working on recovery and rescue efforts, but so far there had been no survivors, 'Estimates currently project upwards of over 2000 people, consisting of both employees of the Public Safety Commission, and civilians as well, were caught up in the disaster.' the male reporter explained to the camera.
'The biggest question on everyone's mind right now is 'How?', unfortunately due to the nature of the disaster, nearby security footage, cell phone as well, were all wiped out by the blast. The National Guard is on alert and the president has been moved to an undisclosed location, the red cross is currently working around the clock in search of survivors but the President assured the American people that whomever is responsible shall be brought to justice.' the newscaster said before it was turned off.
Kali's head turned to her husband who was leaning over the couch, his hand on the remote which she took, "How bad was it?" she asked sadly. Nolan sighed and remained quiet, walking around the couch, Kali saw the dirt, ash, and grime covering his costume, on any other day she would complain that she didn't want that on the sofa. But it hadn't been any other day in a while, leaning her head on his shoulder, Kali felt his massive body relax, "Do they know anything yet?" she asked.
He shook his head, "No, nothing yet…..they're still speculating on if it was some Villain who attacked, someone whose quirk caused them to go out of control, or possibly some terrorist group." he explained before shaking his head. "Where's Mako?" he asked.
"He and Izuku went out, I told him to stay away from the Public Safety Commission just to be safe…" she trailed off. Nolan nodded in understanding. "Oh and….Cecil called." she said, making his tired eyes open. "He asked you to call him back but he knew you were busy." she said, wrapping her arms around his. His wife's warm brown eyes looked over to his face. It was unreadable, but given the past week and what he's been doing….
Nolan never liked rescue and recovery, Kali imagined no one did when seeing death on such a large scale.
Nolan sighed before standing himself up, "I need a shower. I'll take care of my suit." he said, Kali holding onto his hand. He slipped out of her grasp and floated up to their bedroom door and walked past it, shedding his costume off and tossing it into the dirt laundry bastket beside the bathroom door.
Turning the shower on, he relaxed as the water washed down over him, letting out a long sigh his hands braced himself against the wall. It was true that he didn't like rescue and recovery jobs like this. Not because death on that scale was unnerving to him.
He just didn't see the point of them.
"You think All Might will head over there to help?" Mako asked Izuku as the two walked into the comic book/Manga store. The store that Mako and Izuku went to was fairly large, with rows upon rows of comics and manga, Izuku wasn't a huge comic book reader but the ones that Mako introduced him to were interesting. Even if it was strange to read from left to right. "I mean you told me how he spent a couple years over there before coming back to Japan."
Izuku pursed his lips as they walked past a shelve of variant cover issues, "I don't know. I mean he hasn't…..made any announcements to do so." he said carefully. "And if someone is going to try something similar, then the our branch of the safety commission will probably want him to stay close in case something else is tried here." he reasoned. In truth, All Might had been shocked to hear about what happened. But he assured Izuku that the heroes across the world were able to do the job.
Mako turned his head from over his shoulder and nodded, "Yeah. Still don't know how something like that can even happen." he admitted.
Izuku shook his head as they got to Mako's regular isle where he picked up Science Dog. "I heard that some people think it might have just been a freak accident, apparently some gas main explosions look like that crater." he explained. He shook his head, "Wish I could go and help." he said sadly. With his powers he could fly over there today and go help along with his dad. But he didn't know the first thing about recue operations.
Izuku gave him a hopeful look, "Well when we get into U.A. we'll have classes about what to do in those situations." he said optimistically, making Mako smile.
"Yeah….how's the beach cleaning coming along? Are you going to pass out again?" he asked, Izuku rolling his eyes. During class the other day, he had fallen asleep at his desk and he had to wake him up before the teacher noticed.
"It's going well, If I keep up my regiment then I should finish just in time for the entrance exam." he said hopefully. Mako smiled at the news, he knew how much it meant to Izuku to get into the school that All Might also attended. And despite the odds he was going for it, and besides maybe he wouldn't get into the hero course, but he was smart enough to get into general studies or maybe even the support course. "Um….is that science dog different looking then usual?" he asked, pointing to the comic Mako had in his hand.
He rolled his eyes, "Yeah, they brought back his twin brother from like 20 years ago, who died, but not really, and now he's going to be Science Dog." he explained with exhasperbation. Izuku took a minute to absorb that sentence, while their world had become more like those comics with Quirks, they hadn't become so….convoluted.
"That's…..nice?" he tried to be positive, but the look at Mako gave him told him he was wasting his breath. "Then why are you even buying it?" he asked.
"I just want to see why this is happening and see their reasoning. Figure I should give it a shot. I mean even stupid story ideas can be entertaining to read." he said with a shrug. Izuku rolled his eyes as he walked up to the counter, Izuku getting an official All Might manga himself before the two left the store.
"Oh by the way, is your costume ready yet?" Izuku asked excitedly. Mako had told him that his dad had introduced him to a costume designer but had been tight lipped about who it was. Mako mainly didn't want to make Izuku jealous about him getting his costume from the same guy who designed All Might's suits….well his daughter more specifically.
Unfortunately Melissa was a little swamped at the moment with schoolwork but she assured him that it would be ready for him on the first day of school. "It's gonna be a while, you probably won't see it until I get it in my hands. And besides we actually got to get into U.A. first." he reasoned. Izuku nodded with determination, "I'm gonna head home, you want me to drop you off anywhere?" he offered.
Izuku's eyes lit up, "Really!" he exclaimed. Mako smiled and nodded, "Uh, home! Yeah, I actually need to get home for dinner." he said as Mako walked behind him, being a whole half foot taller then him, which he noticed was less then what it used to be, really helped with this part. Looping his under Izuku's shoulders, the two took off into the sky.
Izuku nearly swallowed his tongue when he saw how far away from the ground they were, "Oh…wow!" he exclaimed as Mako flew them at a leisure speed.
"This isn't too uncomfortable is it? Because it's either this or I put you over my shoulder, and I'm not doing the bride's carry unless your hurt." Mako asked.
Izuku shook his head, "This is fine…..wow….I haven't been this high up since…" he trailed off as he recalled the day he met All Might in person. It had been the most important day of his life easily.
"I can go higher but it gets super chilly for other people." Mako commented, piquing Izuku's interest.
"Oh right! Since your invulnerable to a degree you must be able to endure extreme temperatures. I wonder what your threshold is…." Izuku asked curiously.
Mako shrugged at the question, "Well dad says that he can go fast enough to reach entry level speed, like space shuttles when they fall back down to earth." he explained as his friend's apartment building came into view. Descending down to Izuku's floor, he hovered them over the railing and gently let his friend down before landing behind him.
"Thanks for the lift Mako, hey do you want to stay for dinner? Mom wouldn't mind having you." he offered knowingly. Inko Midoriya was probably the most sweetest, wholesome lady that Mako had ever met in his life. When she first met him as Izuku's first friend she nearly flooded the apartment with her tears of joy.
"Raincheck? I gotta get back home. Get my reading done." he said, holding up his bag. Izuku nodded in understanding as he walked to the door of his apartment while Mako took off and shot through the air towards his own home. Within a few minutes he saw the penthouse he lived in and flew down towards the deck to enter from. As he opened the door to the home however…..
THUD THUD THUD.
What the hell is-
"OH God Nolan! Yes! Right There!" Kali shouted.
Color drained from Mako's mortified expression. He SHOT out of his house through the air, pretty sure he broke the sound barrier before once more arriving at the Midoriya household and knocking on the door. A second later, Inko opened up, the smaller woman beaming at him, "Mako! It's good to see you again! Izuku just told me you couldn't stay for dinner-"
"ACTually! I can, if you'll have me?" he asked.
Inko was taken aback by his somewhat frantic tone, "Oh of course!" she said happily before pausing, "Um, honey are you ok? You look a little pale." she asked.
"I…..heard some troubling things is all." he said, trying not to keep hearing his mother's shouts.
Four Months Later
The day before the Entrance Exam to U.A.
'Sorry I couldn't get your suit ready in time.' Melissa apologized to Mako over the phone as he walked home from his trip to the convenience store. The past four months had been peaceful….in the traditional sense. For a while Mako could hardly look at his parents after hearing what they were up to while he was out but he had thankfully gotten over it….he just was sure to text his parents that he was on his way home when he was.
"Don't worry, I know you got your own stuff going on. Besides I think I'd feel out of pace if I was the only guy with a costume on there." he said, causing the inventor to giggle across the phone. "So how's school going for you?" he asked curiously as he entered the lobby of the building that he lived in. Walking to the private elevator, he reached into his pocket and let it scan his keycard that would take him up to his penthouse.
'Well I have a few projects going on right now. One is due at the end of the year so I'm not too worried about that, but the other three are due next week.' she informed him, making his eyes widen at the information.
"Holy shit you ARE busy." he said in astonishment.
Melissa giggled, 'Yeah, but it's not too bad. Most of my work gets done during class time, and when I think I'm lagging behind a little I can work on my own a little and get done sooner. And working on your suit is a nice distraction. The colors we chose really look good.' she said happily. Mako smiled at the fact that he was, in some way, able to lighten her load in a way. 'Speaking of which, would….you be willing to do me a favor?' she asked a little shyly.
"Oh are you kidding of course!" he instantly responded, "Melissa it's the least I could do."
'Thanks! I'm working on this fiber that can possibly absorb kinetic energy. But I don't know anyone else who has a quirk that can really test it….well I do but he's overseas and busy.' she added.
Mako raised an eye, "Boyfriend?" he guessed.
He didn't expect Melissa to snort into laughter, 'What?! Oh no, god no. He's my Uncle. Well….not by blood, but a friend of the family you know?' she asked. 'Anyway I was hoping you could help me run some tests on how durable it is. If it's not a problem.' she asked.
He shook his head as the elevator rose, "Not at all. I gotta go, talk to you tomorrow after the exam."
'Ok! Good luck Mako!' she said cheerfully before hanging up. The teen smiling to himself as his elevator reached his floor, the doors slid open and he stepped out.
"I'm home!" he called out as he walked into view of the kitchen where his mom and dad where, along with a older man in a black suit, white dress shirt and red tie. Turning to him, Mako was slightly taken back by the older man's appearance, he had greying hair that was mostly bald near the front and top with what remained of a widow's peak near the top of his head and flowing back down the back of his head to about the length of his chin. The most notable feature however was the car on the right side of his mouth and cheek, but Mako made a point not to stare at it. "Oh, sorry, I didn't know we had company." he apologized.
Nolan's serious face softened a little, "Your fine son." he assured as he approached.
The man looked him over before lifting his hand, "Cecil Steadman, head of the Global Defense Agency." he introduced, Mako respectfully shaking his hand. Mako had heard about the GDA from his dad and Izuku. While the Public Safety Commissions around the globe were in charge of regulating heroes and their laws, the GDA was a different governing body that overseeded the Commissions since the entire world contributed to the agency.
They were also the ones who gave Nolan a hero license after arriving on Earth, as it would usually take years of schooling to become a licensed Hero. "Nice to meet you." he greeted as he let go of his hand.
"I was just informing your father that we're issuing a warning out to all flying license carriers." he explained, making Mako tilt his head questionably.
Nolan crossed his arms over his chest, "I still think your being a little paranoid Cecil." he replied, the government agent turning to him.
"Maybe but I'd rather have people looking out for anything out of the ordinary then miss something that could prevent another Commission being wiped off the face of the Earth." he replied.
Mako looked between the two of them, "Wait, what's going on? Did you guys find a lead into that?" he asked.
Cecil turned back to him, "We have a theory, the crater left behind from the attack on the Commission's Headquarters is similar to that of impact sites from meteorites." he explained as he slid his hands into the pockets of his suit jacket. "But none of the word's Space organizations picked up anything that could do that much damage anywhere close to our solar system. Which can only mean that it was someone with a quirk." he reasoned.
Nolan's shoulders relaxed, "I can up my patrols in the atmosphere if it'll put you at ease." he offered.
Cecil nodded, "Do it. Also, be on the look out for a hero we have MIA, Captain Celebrity. Last time anyone saw him was on the day of the incident." he explained. The half viltrumite frowned at the news, Captain Celebrity was one of the most well known American heroes. Deku had showed him the video of him coming to Japan to save the citizens trapped on a falling apart space needle, it was considered a turning point for him as he was a victim of rumor and controversy for a while beforehand.
Nolan gave Cecil a measured look, "You don't think he might be…" he trailed off.
Cecil shook his head, "No, we have video of him over here visiting his manager on the day of. She said that he took off after word of the disaster happened." he explained as he turned back to Mako. "Good luck on the exam kid." he said as he walked past him. Before he could thank him however, a doorway of light appeared in front of Cecil which he walked through before it closed behind him.
Mako blinked in disbelief, "What…..what the hell was that?!" he asked, pointing at the space where he disappeared from.
"Oh that's his quirk. Gateway, he can teleport anywhere in the world as long as there's solid footing underneath it." his mother explained as she walked through the kitchen and embraced her son. "And if you see anything-"
"Call dad right away. I know. I know." he assured her, that lesson had been drilled into his head by his mom since he was just a little kid. "Mom you've told me that literally every time you hear something dangerous happened somewhere else. And I get it, you want me to be safe, but you've ingrained it in me." he said tiredly.
Kali rolled her eyes, "Wow. Feeling the love." she said with sarcasm.
"Aw Mom come on-" Mako protested.
Mako let out a sigh, "You know what I man, I'll be careful." he promised, his mom smiling at him before kissing his cheek which he immediately wiped off before waking away.
"I'll be in the study, I got to go over some case work." she said before entering the room next to the elevator which was where most of her legal work was done. Mako walked over to the living room and sat down on the couch, his father sitting down on the other side.
"So…..nervous?" his father asked him.
Mako looked up to his dad and smiled with confidence, "Honestly? Not really. Izuku has been helping me study for the written portion and I'm pretty sure the practical shouldn't be hard with my powers." he said assuredly before faltering. "I just…..I don't know how Izuku…." he trailed off. For ten months his friend has been working harder then anyone in preparation for the Entrance Exam, and as much as Mako wanted to support him the nagging thought in the back of his head came to his mind.
Izuku is quirkless, does he really even have a chance at getting into the hero course?
Nolan pursed his lips together, "When you first introduced him to us? I kind of felt….pity for him." he admitted, "And while it's clear that he's dedicated, there's only so much those without a quirk can do son." he said realistically as he looked at him. His son's face showing his mixed feelings, he took a breath before continuing. "So…..maybe you need to face that fact. Some people in the world just aren't at the same level as you are."
Mako frowned and looked away, "It just…it isn't fair to him."
"Yeah well….life isn't fair son." his father replied plainly.
Mako awoke early the next day to get to the entrance exam, and approaching the school from the air somehow made it seem more intimidating. The school was cordoned off from the rest of the ward behind a large rectangular wall that blocked off a huge forested area with the school itself in the middle. Off in the distance he could see the stadium where the sports festival took place in, as well as some small scale cities. Woah…..man Izuku was right about this place, I don't think I've ever seen another school come this close with how big it is. he thought as he flew down towards the gate of the school.
He and Izuku planned to meet at the entrance of the school the day before but upon landing at the front gate his friend was nowhere to be seen. Pulling out his phone he saw that there was about ten minutes before the exam started, Shit. Well maybe he meant the front entrance of the school and not the gate? he wondered as he walked through the gate and began his trek towards the school.
Walking down the path however, he was shocked to see Izuku….floating in the air?! His confusion was short as he watched the girl beside him adjust him so that he was standing up. She was around Izuku's height with short brown hair, as she turned to talk with him he could see what looked like soft blush marks on her cheeks. Izuku on the other hand was silently shocked as she talked with him in a friendly manner, he couldn't catch what they were saying but as she waved him goodbye, he walked over to his friend.
"Hey man you-" he began before he saw the absolute delight his friend's face had, "-have a good time?" he asked amusingly, drawing Izuku out of himself.
"I-I just talked to a girl!" he blurted out a little loudly, a few people around them looking at him strangely.
Mako put his hand on his shoulder, "Buddy….you didn't say anything to her."
"I talked to a girl…" he whispered to himself in disbelief, Mako rolling his eyes as he all but dragged his friend to the orientation hall.
Finding a pair of seats, he and Izuku sat down together after getting their documentation from one of the students outside the hall. As Mako skimmed over it, he came upon the practical portion of the Exam guidelines, Ok so….wait we're fighting robots?! he thought in disbelief as he saw a diagram showing the four types of robots that would be in the exam.
Suddenly the lights dimmed and one of the teachers from the school walked out onto the stage, making Izuku let out an excited squeal. "Welcome to today's live perfomace! Can I geta a 'Hey!'?" he asked with amped up energy before listening for everyone to respond. No one did, "Well that's fine my examinee listeners! Now let me lay down the rules so we can get on with this You feel me!?" he asked with just as much undisturbed excitement. He was once again met with silence.
Well from what he could hear anyway, Izuku was chatting up a storm next to Mako, "It's the voice hero Present Mic! I listen to his podcast every week! It's so cool! But then again I guess all the teachers here are pro heroes but still!" he said, Mako was however trying not to laugh at how no one was cheering back to him.
"Here's how it'll go." Mic began, "You'll be in a 'Mock Cityscape Manuver for Ten Minutes! Bring along whatever you want, after this you'll each head your assigned location! If you're not sure where, then check out the sheet with yo' name on it!" he said. Mako glanced back down at the sheet and noticed he was at Testing ground C. Glancing over at Izuku's however he saw he was assigned to A.
Oh shit. I was hoping to help him out if he needs it but…..damn man I'm sorry. he thought as Mic explained the printout that he had already read, with there being three types of enemies that they were to destroy.
"Excuse me, may I ask a question?" someone in a row below the one Mako and Izuku were at asked with his hand raised before standing up and pointing at the document. "This handout shows there to be Four different types of Faux Villains for the exercise! I find it highly unbecoming for a prestigious school such as U.A. to have such an error!" he complained. Mako and Izuku shared a look….he…he couldn't be serious could he. "And you with the curly hair!" Izuku sat up straighter. "Stop distracting everyone with your muttering,if you're not here to take this seriously then please leave." Mako frowned at the boy as Present Mic explained that the last fake villain on the chart was one that they were advised to avoid, apparently Bakugou wasn't alone in being a jerk.
After the orientation finished, Mako and Izuku went to their designated locker rooms to change into their mock battle clothes. Izuku was the first to get dressed as it was his simple light green track suit he used to train in. Waiting outside the locker room door, he turned and saw his friend step out, "I know, I know…..I look ridiculous." Mako admitted.
The half Viltrumite wore a orange compression shirt that hugged his frame, a pair of light blue sweatpants with a yellow stripe down the sies were tucked into a pair of dark brown boots. His hands ere covered with a pair of work gloves, and on his face were a pair of goggles that covered his eyes with a yellow bandanna around the bottom portion of his face. Izuku took the whole homemade costume in before speaking, "What…..exactly are you going for here?" he asked, gesturing to the costume.
"Ok in my defense I don't have work out clothes." Mako defended.
"That's not what I asked-what are you going for here?" Izuku asked again as they began walking.
Mako sighed, "Ok I might have thrown this together this morning because I was hoping to have my suit today and I could….maybe show it off." he admitted, looking down at the worker gloves he grabbed. "Besides I don't want to tear up my actual clothes." he explained as they exited the school where a number of buses where, labels on the side to indicate which Faux City they were going to.
Izuku and Mako stood as others piled onto the buses, "Hey Izuku…..whatever happens-"
"I.." Izuku began, Mako paused, Izuku was about to apologize before Mako shook his head, pulling the goggles up and the mask down. "I just want to say…..thank you for being my friend Mako." he said with a genuinely sad smile. "I know you probably think that I…don't have much of a chance." he said, looking down from his friend's eyes. "But even so…..you never stopped supporting me and my dream. In fact you made it even better when you got your powers." he said.
Mako opened and closed his mouth, not even sure how to respond to that, "So I'm gonna try my best, not just for me….but for you too….because I want to become a hero with you."
The Half Viltrumite felt his throat tighten up a little, his lifelong friend's words filling him with a bittersweet feeling that made him smile. He held up his fist, "Meet you at the end of this." he said confidently. His friend's eyes watered but didn't shed before he bumped his fist against Mako's.
"Meet you at the end." he echoed.
The bus ride to the battleground was anxious for Mako, Relax, I got this. I totally got this. he assured himself. On paper there was nothing he should be worried about, the fact that they were fighting robots meant that he didn't need to worry about pulling his punches like he thought he would. And with his flight he could probably cover the battleground fast enough to score enough points. But the problem was he didn't know how many points that he needed to pass.
And he didn't want to be a jerk and hog a ton of points so that others couldn't pass, Ok maybe if I just get like ten of each or something? That'd get me sixty….but is that even enough? he asked himself as the bus pulled to a stop. As the doors opened, Mako and the other students filed out of the bus and in front of a large gate which led to the fake city. Geeze how did they even make so many of these? he wondered, looking around he noticed that Bakugo wasn't here. Well hopefully he's at B, don't want to think about him near Izuku at A. he thought hopefully.
"And Start!" Mako blinked at Present Mic's voice before shaking his head and taking off through the gates, some of the other examinees following suit while others where surprised by the sudden go ahead.
Ok! Guess we're starting! Mako thought as he few around the corner of a building and saw a three pointer, shooting right at it, he reeled his fist back before throwing it across the head of the machine, shattering it apart. Oh yeah these things are easy! he thought confidently as he flew off in search of another. One on wheels suddenly rolled out in front of him! Mako didn't have time to slow himself down so instead he raised his arms to brace against the next machine as he rammed through it.
Slowing to a stop he looked back at the two he destroyed, "Ok that's…..five points. Alright Mako, let's keep going." he said to himself before flying up high into the air and overlooking the aera below. There were dozens upon dozens of different robots down below with various examinees attacking them. "Well looks like points aren't something I need to worry about." he said before shooting off through the air towards the street, curing his trajectory as he approached the road so he was just flying over it.
Fighting while flying was something his dad had gone over with him, because of his momentum, he didn't need to cock his arms or legs if he didn't want to put power behind his attack. So he raised his fists in front of him as he flew towards another three pointer and puncher through it, reaching a fork in the road, he slowed down and hovered across the road until he stopped.
Looking around, he saw a trio of one pointers charging at him, raising his fists he launched himself at them, uppercutting through one of them and swinging a kick into another to the right. The last one wrapped it's arms around Mako, but the teen shot the two of them back into the building behind them, Mako crushing it against the stone wall. "Ok this is way more easy then I thought, I have nothing to worry myself about." he said in relief before taking off and flying to find his next target.
A few minutes later, Mako's foot slammed down on the head of an two pointer from above, making his score reach up to a respectable 50 points. Looking around, he saw the other examinees destroying the flimsy robots, one girl with pink skin, hair, and small yellow horns in her hair was throwing acid from her hands while another one with was using a large shadow that came out of their chest to tear through them just as Mako had been doing. "I was kind of under the impression that these things would be hard." he joked to himself.
It was obvious that his powers played a large role in his progress, he had mobility and power in a way he didn't see others have.
Suddenly the ground shook, "….uh…." Mako said before it began rumbling, "Uuhhhhh….." he said again as a shadow covered not only him but the entire street, everyone on it looking behind him. "UUUUUHHHHHH…." he continued as he turned around to see a Robot that was so big it's hands could cover rooftops of the buildings around them without reaching up that much. "Is this even allowed?!" he asked himself as everyone started to run in the opposite direction while the giant robot started rolling forward on it's street wide treads.
It's massive hands pushed through the buildings, tearing through them as through they were made of cardboard, he thought that maybe the zero pointers might have been standing in for something like a hero or something but that thing was a natural disaster if anything! Mako was frozen in place on the street, his eyes as wide as the goggles covering them, I-I What the hell do I do?! he thought in disbelief.
"Aw crap!" he turned his head to see the spikey red head pinned under a slab of concrete. Mako zoomed over and grabbed onto the concrete and threw it off. The spikey haired examinee looked up at him gratitude, "Thanks man." he said gratefully as he was offered a hand.
"No problem-oh shit!" he exclaimed upon seeing the large shadow of the hand on the ground around them. Mako grabbed the other boy and flew away as the hand came down on the ground, "Are these people crazy?!" he exclaimed as he flew the other boy over a rooftop, holding him up under his arms as the redhead's legs flailed about below him.
Swooping down to the street, he set the other boy down, taking a second to catch his breath, "Thanks for that, my hardening probably would have protected me but I don't want to test that out." he explained as he looked back to the massive Zero Pointer. He swallowed, "What are we supposed to do?" he asked in frustration.
"I don't know, maybe survive? I mean he said it's an obstacle." he reasoned. He assumed that they were just supposed to ignore the Zero Point, but that would be like trying to ignore an earthquake or something.
The spikey haired boy looked frustrated, "I hate the idea f running away but I don't see any choice." he said mostly to himself before flashing Mako a grateful grin, showing off his sharp teeth, "Thanks again for the save man, hope you make it!" he said before running off, Mako waving after him before taking up into the sky and watching as the zero pointer tore through the street, chasing the examinees away.
Ok this is pretty nuts, oh god I hope Izuku isn't anywhere near this thing at his city. he thought hopefully as he flew past the Zero Pointer's head, turning around in midair to look back at it as the giant machine swiped it's fist through the side of a building, taking out the corner portion of it. Wait a second…..those things are pretty fragile….I wonder. he thought as he slowed to a stop.
Suddenly he took off towards it's head, reeling his fist back before it raised it's hand up and swatted him away!
Mako smashed through the rooftop of a smaller building, coming out through the wall and hitting the street a few times before sliding to a halt. His clothes were scuffed, and the lens of his goggle was cracked. "Ok….ouch," he groaned to himself before looking up back at the Zero Pointer. "Alright, just ouch." he said, realizing that while this thing packed a punch it wasn't something he couldn't handle. Nothing ventured right? he asked himself before taking off from the ground, keeping low until he reached the base of the robot and curbed and flew up along it's body, throwing his fist out and uppercutting the robot in the head, the massive square shape reeling back from the hit.
"Ha! How do you like that you overgrown toaster!?" he shouted in triumph.
The machine's head adjusted itself until Mako was in it's sight, the confident teen gestured to it with his hand, "Bring it." he challenged as he readied to fight.
"And that's time!"
WHAT? Mako thought as he looked towards the entrance of the area where speakers were present. He turned back to the machine as it rolled back the way it came from, "Ah, ah, Awwwww! Man, come on! I was gonna fight a giant robot! That's like the coolest things you can do as a superhero!" he complained as he slouched over and floated down back to earth. Landing on the ground, he kicked a stone aside, "This kind of sucks." he said to himself.
After returning to the school, he changed into his regular clothes and waited for Izuku near the entrance to the school. When ten minutes passed without him exiting, he began to grow worried, I mean….the teachers here would step in if anything happened right? he asked himself. He thought back to their last talk before the exam.
"I want to become a hero with you."
"Damnit man, where are you?" he asked himself.
"Um, excuse me?" he turned his head and was surprised to see the same girl he saw Izuku 'talking' with when he arrived at the school. "Um….you wouldn't happen to know…..well I don't know his name. He's got freckles? Green messy hair? Kind of plain looking?" she asked, struggling to find better descriptors.
Ouch that hurts more then the robot hand. Mako thought with a wince, "Izuku? Yeah, I know him. Do you know where he is?" he asked curiously.
She shook her head, "No, last I saw him they were taking him to the infirmary after he destroyed that big robot." she explained.
"…I'm sorry what was that?" Mako asked, blinking at what he HAD to have misheard.
"The big robot? That Zero pointer? Your friend destroyed it and saved me! I wanted to thank him." she explained with a small smile.
Mako opened and closed his mouth, "I….Izuku….." he reached down and pulled out his phone, opening up his picture of the two of them, "This guy? Right here?" he asked, showing her the picture from when they graduated middle school. She took a closer look at it and nodded, "He…..the Zero pointer? The big thing that was like the size of a building? He beat that?" he asked in disbelief.
"Yes!" she reiterated.
"And like….how? Did he…..like…..turn it off?" he asked.
"No he punched it's head off! It was pretty amazing." she admitted with an excited smile before her more worried expression returned, "But he was hurt by it and the school nurse healed him before taking him away." she explained.
Am….am I having a stroke here?! Mako asked himself, "I…um….haven't seen him….excuse me." he said, quickly walking off in search of a nurse's office, leaving the confused girl in search of his friend with a lot of questions in his mind. Ok, so question one, since when does Izuku have a quirk?! I mean I know I'm one to talk but I'm half alien! What's his excuse? he thought as he wandered the halls, looking for someone to direct him. Secondly, is he ok? I mean that girl mentioned that the nurse healed him but I mean, how bad was he hurt? he wondered as he turned a corner and nearly bumped into someone.
"Oh hey! Where's the fire?" a tall blonde boy with blue eyes asked him.
Mako raised a hand apologetically, "Sorry, I'm looking for the nurse's office? My friend was hurt during the exam and he was taken there." he explained.
The blonde student smiled , "Oh no problem man, the nurse's office is on this floor, down this hall, turn the next corner to the right and it's on your right." he directed. Mako gave him a grateful smile before bowing his head and taking off in the direction he told him to go.
Arriving at the door of the nurse's office, Mako knocked on it before he heard a muffled voice to tell him to come in. Entering the office, he found a older woman, much shorter then him, then Izuku really, sitting in a chair at her desk with her grey hair done up in a bun with a syringe going through it to hold it together. "Yes dearie? How can I help you?" she asked.
"Um, someone said that you treated my friend? He's got green hair? freckles? About this tall?" he asked as he held up his hand to approximately how tall Izuku was.
The old woman, wearing a blue visor over her eyes, nodded, "Ahhh that one! Yes he's fine now, just resting." she said, reaching to the curtain beside her and pulling it aside to show his friend in the bed behind it fast asleep. Mako let out a breath of relief, "He should wake up any moment, it's very kind of you to be worried about him." she said.
"Yeah…..um….I heard he was hurt….was it…bad?" he asked.
"Well if you consider both legs and one of his arms broken bad? Then yes it was bad I'd say." she said before shrugging, "But my quirk was able to reset his bones, he's good as new now." she assured upon seeing the worried expression that flashed over the half viltrumite's face.
Before he could continue questioning, Izuku groaned before sitting up, rubbing his eyes, "Hnnng? What….what happened?" he tiredly asked as he looked around, when he saw Mako the teen watched as a spark of recognition crossed his face and just as fast morphed into one that Mako was all too familiar with. Despair.
Suddenly those questions he had didn't seem that important, "Um…..come on man, let's get home." he said, tilting his head to the door. Izuku silently nodded, standing up from the bed and walking out the door, Mako giving the nurse a grateful smile before following after his friend.
The week following the entrance exam was nerve wracking for Mako, it wasn't that he felt like he failed, but the fact that he didn't know was driving him nuts! not to mention the longer he waited the more worried he became that he actually didn't get in and somehow failed, Could I have flunked the written portion and the practical just didn't cover it? Maybe I gave some wrong information? Shit what if I flew too high and disqualified myself?! he thought as he hovered back and forth though his room.
This had been his brain for the past week, one which he needed to pull himself out of. His mom and dad reassured him that it would be fine, but the led weight he felt in his chest didn't lighten up despite their assurances. Taking a deep breath, he let it out as he touched down onto the floor, "Ok relax, it's probably just taking them a while to get to me." he reasoned. Walking over to his bed, he sat down and looked over at his phone, no matter what he was going through, it wasn't as worse at what Izuku must be.
He had explained that he finally had gotten his quirk but he just couldn't control it enough to be useful and only managed to take out the Zero Pointer with it. Mako had tried to cheer him up, asking questions about his quirk and why it took so long to come in but he was uncharacteristically quiet. I mean it'd be different if his quirk never came in and he failed but…..god this is just- he thought before there was a knock on the door to his room. Turning his head he saw the door open to see both his mom and dad in the doorway, both of them smiling as his mom held up a letter with a golden wax stamp on the front of it.
Kali was beaming with excitement as he son zoomed across the room, "Is that-"
"Yes! Now open it!" she said excitedly as she shoved it into his chest, once his hands were over it however, a pit formed in Mako's stomach.
Swallowing the spit that was gathering in his throat, he looked up at his dad. His face conveying his worried thought, What if I don't get in? he silently asked.
Nolan smiled as he laid a hand on his shoulder, "Son, you're you. You'll get in." he said in amusement. Mako took a deep breath before, like a band aid, he tore open the letter and reached inside. He didn't find paper, but he did find a small disc inside which he pulled out. It was about the size of a watch with some sort of lens. "What the hell?" he asked before a light projected out of the device and into a hologram.
"BOYAH I AM HERE AS A PROJECTION!" Mako nearly dropped the device at the sudden voice of All Might was projected between him and his parents.
"The hell?!" Mako and Nolan exclaimed in unison.
"Young Mako Metuki! You are probably surprised to see me again! And it's no coincidence, as I have taken a position of teaching at my Alma Mater, U.A.!" The number one hero announced, Mako blinking as Kali's smile broadened. Nolan's look was more….absorbing. I'm happy to announce that you scored a respectable 75 points!" he announced.
Mako blinked, "Wait…that's…that's wrong I only got 50…"
"Ah but wait! You must be wondering how this is, allow me to explain." All Might's projection began. "While we did score you on the number of Fuax villains you defeated, there was also another factor we used to score in the form of rescue points!" he said as the projection showed a recording of him zooming over to save the spikey haired boy he met on the battlefield. "After all, how could we ignore those who exhibit a fundamental part of being a hero?" All Might turned to Mako, "And so young Mako, I welcome you to the Hero Academia! Congratulations young man!" he said proudly before the projection faded away, showing the look of pride his mother had before she wrapped herself around him and squealed in excitement.
"You did it!" she yelled in celebration while Nolan gave him a proud smile.
"I knew you would." he said assuredly as his mother let their son go, giving him a chance to run a hand through his hair.
"I-I'm in….I can't….can't…OH SHIT!" He suddenly exclaimed before handing the device to his dad, "I gotta go check something! I'll be back! Promise!" he said before running to his window.
"Mako?" Kali asked as he pushed open his window and flew out into the night sky and took off. The mother looked at Nolan quizzingly, "What was that about?" she asked.
Nolan shrugged his shoulders, "Well he said he'd be back….what do we want to celebrate?" he asked with a smile.
"Shouldn't Mako decide?" he asked with a smirk, tossing the device into the air before catching it.
"Pre celebration for us, his can come later." Kali explained, making Nolan chuckle. "I was thinking wine with some cheese. I have some leftovers from last week when you went to Italy." she said as she walked out of their son's room, leaving Nolan alone to look down at the device in his hand.
His joyful expression quickly vanished and turned to frustration, All Might was at U.A…..that made things…..difficult. His hand twitched and crushed the device in his hand.
Meanwhile, Mako was flying as fast as he could reasonably go across town to Izuku's house, If they were counting rescue points then that has to mean he got some! He took out the zero pointer! he thought as he flew down towards the Midoriya apartment building. Grabbing the railing to their floor and lifting himself over it, he ran to their door and knocked rapidly, it opened just as he was about to knock again to Inko who had tears in her eyes.
"Mako!" she said before wrapping her arms around him and embracing him in a hug that might give is dad a run for his money. Behind her, he saw Izuku standing in his green robe and pajamas with a letter in his hand, and a beaming smile with tears in his own eyes as well. Inko pulled herself away and wiped her eyes as the two friends walked up to each other, Mako beaming at Izuku.
"How many?" he asked.
Izuku looked down at the envelope, "S-Sixty…Sixty rescue points….." he said in disbelf before looking up at him and smiling. "I passed!" he exclaimed before embracing his oldest friend who returned it.
Today was probably the best day of their lives.
And for one of them, the worst one was the horizon.
AN: Gee I wonder if people will like this fic, I mean I planned it out and everything but I still, Invincible isn't that well known as MHA so people probably won't (opens mail and sees over 100 follows, follows, and almost 60 reviews in two chapters) DEAR LORD I'M DROWING! I'M DROWNING! HELP ME AQUARIUS! Oh right he's dead.
But seriously holy shit! This is-this is amazing! I'm blown away by the love you've all shown for this fic. Seriously this is inspiring, I only hope the limited action we got here was satisfying enough for now. Anyway, onto reviews!
Rnji: Indeed.
Brave 2000: I think it's a pretty even fight TBH, I mean All Might beat Gigomachina once, the dude who punched a hole in a mountain. I'm pretty sure there's a fight there.
Maelstrom Ressurected: Oh man I'm actually drafting that out now actually!
Messiah of Authors: No. Not at all. Not for THIS bakugou anyway.
Awesomerebel55: Ahh! But remember they divide the examinees up based on their middle schools so that no one who went to the same one goes to the same battleground to work together. It's why Bakugo doesn't see Mako or Ashido is at the same one that he's at since Kirishima is there.
Viewing Civilian: Yeah it's been a little while since I was allowed to get this violent and it not feel gratuitous.
Dracus6: Don't know who either of those guys are.
D3lph0xL0v3r: Yeah Homelander and Omni Man are two VERY different characters. Also thanks!
Guest 1: I mean….why mess with perfection?
Wizardwolf 1020: I think we discussed this in PM's. If not then please contact me in PM's.
AtomicGod666: Right?! She is literally best girl! I mean they're all best girls but she needs more love!
Pervy Sage: No that's not splitting atoms that's just friction, if you split atoms you get a atomic explosion. That's friction from the air that makes that heat cone appear, those exposions he makes are just from the force of his impacts.
King Banana: I mean I don't think if Mark was raised in this setting he would be the same guy from the comic or tv show for that matter. And yes the other heroes do exist, in fact the hero that they referace in last chapter, Outrun, is a member of the GotG. Savage Dragon actually…..well here's the thing.
Originally Invinicble somewhat shared a universe with the other image comic characters. Like Savage dragon, hell there was actually a team he was a part of called 'The Pact' with a few heroes on it including Fire Breather…that name sound familiar? Yeah! it's that animated cartoonnetwork movie from 2010! That technically takes place in the same universe as invincible and Spawn!
But after a while it was clear that with what goes on in invicible, there's no way that this is a shared universe. But Robert Kirkman's creations all appear. In fact I have a special thing in mind for season 2.
: Of course he will he's BATTLE BEAST!
King Bananna: That's true, but keep in mind that Nolan, Mark, and Thadeus were all needed for that WITH the help of the infinity gun. And it's also farther on in the series then that would be when that fight happens and Nolan gets stronger by then.
Grey Flacon Knight: Yeah see that's the thing about All Might, even when he's outmatched, he tries his damndest to find a way to power through. It's what we all love about him. As for public Knowledge, it sorta is? But I mean…..I think that once everyone accepts that Superpowers are a thing that happens to everyone? Anything like that is just not surprising? I mean we see in episode one someone complaining about a supervillain like being stuck in traffic.
Obvously that might change with some revelations.
WizardWolf 1020: To be fair they're pretty high up there in the comic, plus I imagine they're throwing upwards to avoid hitting anything unlike in the show. But yeah that fitness test is….gonna be interesting.
GodsReader15: Thanks!
Guest 2: I have a teaser on deviantart, but I will post seasonal posters on there. This story is going to be one big one and not divided up into seasons, but I will update the cover on here when I can.
Luke5921: Hope you enjoyed it!
Saint-Leiker: Yeah the hallmarks of a superhero fic.
Brave 2000: Ok yeah we talked about this, that was only in the show and honestly there's a bunch of ways he could have dealt with that, he could have smashed it into smaller pieces as soon as it entered the solar system and moved the bigger ones out of the way, plus it's in space where mass doesn't matter but acceleration does.
And honestly the Immortal is such a jobber, All Might could trounce him.
Gaspcho: I did that when I made a test fic of this on tumblr. It was totally worth it.
Sandoalr77: See here's the issue I face with this, do I go by the comic as it's the original scource material, or by the show? Because they both do that fight differently and it portays Omni man differently as a result. In the comic we meet the guardians the same issue they're killed, and they all get killed on one page with one panel each dedicated to one of them.
He then kills immortal very easily, and because we never really see their upper limits of strength we don't really get a idea of how powerful Nolan is until his fight with Mark.
As for the show, It's structured differently for a bunch of reasons, but looking at the red rush scene, I don't know if he crushed his head for the psychological element like you said, or he just did it as fast as he could and we're just seeing it from Red Rush's POV since everything is slowed down. I see Nolan as cold, calcuative, and well darwinistic here, not sadistic but very matter of fact. Like he doesn't take joy in this.
And you are right, Nolan has lived for thousands of years, and he has experience fighting, but I think the question is does he have experience fighting someone as strong as Omni man? On account of Viltrum being peaceful when he was born, it stands he's never had to fight someone around his level of strength.
But nevertheless I thank you for your deep insight into what might happen and I really do enjoy your take!
For'Sleep: Oh hell yeah.
Shadow-Proclimation8: I mean I like Sato, I got nothing against him, Or tentacole for that matter. But…..I might have an idea.
Megatronus Uchiha: That was my bad, he's about 5'10", so he's got a half foot on Izuku.
Andrew: You'll know it when you see it.
Archer: Oh hell no, they're the worst. Like…ok spoiler warning just in case, but they are the scum of the earth to me. They want to preserve the status quo by ignoring the grey areas of the law. I mean Toga is the perfect example, just because her quirk is so different she's labeled a villain.
And yeah, Superman would no doubt fight for these people, he's champion of the oppressed after all. Honestly I can't wait to get to that arc, I honestly can't wait to get to MVA in the anime (LOOKING AT YOU ANIME PRODUCERS, SERIOUSLY JUST GET TO THE PART WE ALL WANT TO!).
Corporate Comander: I mean I'd think he'd have a lighter workload because of all the heroes, I mean 80% of MHA world have superpowers, that's way more then the superhero population in invincible.
