Ch.27 - The Art of Fire

- Somewhere in Gato's Headquartrers -

(Time Undisclosed)

After a short walk, Kimimaro reached their destination. Slowly opening the door, he entered the dimly lit room, where a chill lingered in the air. Kushimaru sat on a chair, facing away from the entrance, calmly tending to his wounds with gauze. Despite this, he sensed Kimimaro's presence even before he spoke.

"How did it go?" Kushimaru inquired.

"It went without a hitch, Kushimaru-sama," Kimimaro replied calmly.

"Cut the crap, Kimimaro. Tell me what he really said," Kushimaru urged.

Kimimaro subtly exhaled, realizing that his master sought the unvarnished truth. "Gato-sama stated that he won't pay you unless you eliminate those Konoha shinobi," Kimimaro conveyed.

"Is that so?... Anything else?" Kushimaru probed further.

"He also claimed that you are all talk and that he's wasting money by employing you," Kimimaro disclosed.

Kushimaru burst into laughter, finding Gato's audacity to belittle him utterly amusing. He knew that he could easily end Gato's life any day of the week, but he chose to tolerate him for now, planning to milk him dry. When the time came that Gato could no longer fulfill his payments, Kushimaru would dispose of him himself. The man was currently testing his patience, and it was proving to be quite a challenge.

"Gato-sama also informed me that we have a lead and instructed me to relay the message that you should prepare yourself," Kimimaro added, providing the relevant information.

Rising from his chair, Kushimaru finished wrapping his wounds with gauze. "I see... Fetch me my sword," he commanded Kimimaro. Without hesitation, Kimimaro promptly retrieved the Nuibaru (Sewing Needle) and handed it to his master.

"Let's go," Kushimaru declared, prompting Kimimaro to nod and follow his lead.

"After I'm done with them, you're next, Gato," Kushimaru chuckled inwardly, relishing the anticipation of the day when he could finally exact his revenge.

- The Next Day -

(Somewhere in the woods)

Ino stirred from her sleep, gradually awakening to the realization that she and her team had spent the night camping in the forest. Asuma had deemed it necessary due to the presence of Gato's men in town. Despite the uncomfortable conditions, Ino couldn't help but notice a peculiar warmth surrounding her. It felt surprisingly cozy, and for a moment, she entertained the idea of staying in that position a bit longer. However, the thought of starting the day early and tending to her own tasks urged her to move. Opening her eyes, she suddenly realized that she was snuggled against Naruto. Flustered, she silently thanked her luck that Naruto was still fast asleep.

"*Phew*... Thank goodness he's still sound asleep..." Ino thought, a flush creeping up her cheeks. She then glanced around, searching for any sign of their sensei. To her relief, Asuma was nowhere to be seen. Worried about the possibility of him witnessing the awkward scene, she abruptly felt a presence behind her. Reacting instinctively, she swiftly retrieved a kunai from her pouch, ready to defend herself.

"Whoa... Take it easy, Ino... It's just me," Asuma's voice broke through, redirecting the tip of Ino's kunai away from his face.

Recognizing her sensei's voice, Ino eased her grip, lowering the kunai before returning it to her pouch. She quickly apologized for her defensive reaction, but Asuma dismissed it, even encouraging her to stay vigilant and verify the identity of anyone approaching her from behind.

"You're up early... Is there a reason for that? Usually, you prefer to sleep longer during missions," Asuma remarked, recalling Ino's penchant for sleeping in. He had learned the hard way that she was not a morning person, but that was a tale for another time.

"Oh... I just wanted to get a head start today, Asuma-sensei. That's all," Ino replied, providing her reason.

"I see... Well, let's wait a few more minutes then. Wake up your teammates later. We'll need to change our location soon," Asuma explained, suggesting that they move to a more suitable spot.

Ino nodded, her curiosity piqued as she seized the opportunity to ask her sensei a question. "By the way, Asuma-sensei... You're pretty good with fire jutsus. Could you perhaps teach me one? I feel like my arsenal lacks diversity. Most of what I know revolves around our clan's techniques, like the Shintenshin no Jutsu (Mind Body Switch Technique) and Shindenshin no Jutsu (Mind Body Transmission Technique). I'm still learning more clan jutsu, but those are the primary ones I use. I also know the Kanashibari no Jutsu (Temporary Paralysis Technique), if that counts for something," Ino explained, expressing her desire for growth.

Asuma considered her request, contemplating which fire-style jutsu would suit her best. He acknowledged that Ino's fighting style leaned towards mid-to-long range due to her clan's techniques, which often required setup time. Taking her needs into account, he aimed to suggest a jutsu that could provide concealment or immobilize opponents, complementing her strengths.

"I suppose it's a good idea to introduce you to some fire-style jutsu, Ino. The question is, which one will suit you? You can learn any fire jutsu you want, but it's crucial to find something that aligns with your fighting style. Given your nature as a mid-to-long range fighter and the setup required by many of your clan's techniques, it would be beneficial for you to focus on jutsu that can conceal you or restrain your opponents effectively," Asuma explained, considering the possibilities.

Ino listened attentively, waiting for Asuma's suggestion. The experienced shinobi pondered the various fire jutsu he knew, ensuring he chose a simple yet effective technique that suited Ino's beginner-level skills. Suddenly, inspiration struck.

"I've got it," Asuma declared, prompting Ino's face to light up with anticipation. "I will teach you two jutsu: the Katon: Hinotama no Jutsu (Fire Release: Fireball Technique) and the Katon: Hi no Naka ni Kakureru no Jutsu (Fire Release: Hiding in Fire Technique)."

Excitement washed over Ino as she eagerly awaited the details. "What do those jutsu do, Asuma-sensei?" she inquired.

"The first one, Katon: Hinotama no Jutsu (Fire Release: Fireball Technique), is a smaller-scale version of the more renowned Katon: Gokakyu no Jutsu (Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique), a favorite among the Uchiha clan. I would have considered teaching you that one, but I'm concerned that it might deplete your chakra reserves too quickly. That's something you'll have to work on in the future. The second jutsu, Katon: Hi no Naka ni Kakureru no Jutsu (Fire Release: Hiding in Fire Technique), allows you to conceal yourself within a flame. Rest assured, it won't harm you unless you mess up the jutsu. However, I believe you're more than capable of handling it. Any questions before we begin?" Asuma explained, outlining the details.

"So, if I understand correctly, the Katon: Hinotama no Jutsu (Fire Release: Fireball Technique) can be used offensively or to create a fire source for the Katon: Hi no Naka ni Kakureru no Jutsu (Fire Release: Hiding in Fire Technique). Is that right, Asuma-sensei?" Ino confirmed, grasping the essence of the two jutsu.

Impressed by her comprehension, Asuma silently praised Inoichi's daughter. "Exactly. I must say, Inoichi-san, you have a smart daughter," he thought to himself. "I'm impressed that you grasped my reasoning for choosing those jutsu without me having to explain it explicitly. But for now, let's find a more suitable location for you to practice these techniques. I wouldn't want to risk setting your sleeping teammates ablaze," Asuma suggested, gesturing toward Shino and Naruto, both still lost in slumber.

- Moments Later -

Naruto slowly woke up, drawn from his slumber by a beam of sunlight shining on his head. Blinking against the brightness, he closed his eyes again and adjusted his position to face away from the light. Still feeling groggy, he wiped away the remnants of sleep from his eyes, only to realize that both Ino and Asuma were missing. His mind whirred into action, wondering where they could be. Determined to find them, Naruto decided to set out on his search.

Leaving a clone behind as a precaution, Naruto stretched his body to shake off the remnants of sleepiness. He recalled the steps for the Chakra Hankyouteii no Jutsu (Chakra Echolocation Technique) that Iruka had taught him, gradually piecing the memory together. After a while, he felt confident in his recollection.

Gathering chakra within himself, Naruto released it in the form of a chakra wave that spread in all directions. As the wave traveled, a rough image formed in his mind, guiding him toward two distinct chakra signatures. "That must be them," Naruto thought, determining the general direction of Ino and Asuma.

After some time walking, he heard voices in the distance, recognizing them as Ino's and Asuma's. Curiosity piqued, Naruto moved closer to investigate. As he approached, he observed Asuma training Ino in fire-style jutsu. It appeared that Ino was having some difficulty mastering the techniques Asuma was teaching her.

"Again... You understand the part on how to gather chakra in your system, but you need to focus on releasing it, instead of a steady stream, release all of it in one go" Asuma instructed Ino.

Ino, panting and perspiring, nodded and prepared to make another attempt. Concentrating her chakra once more, she performed the three necessary hand seals: Snake, Ram, Monkey.

"Katon: Hinotama no Jutsu! (Fire Release: Fireball Technique)" Ino exclaimed, her cheeks puffing out as she released a smaller-scale Fireball Technique. With the completion of the jutsu, Ino's face lit up with joy at having successfully performed it.

"I did it! And it only took... what, six tries?" Ino exclaimed.

"Actually, it was eight attempts, Ino," Asuma corrected her, though Ino's satisfaction seemed undeterred. She was simply delighted to have mastered a new fire jutsu, with the goal of further expanding her repertoire.

Impressed by Ino's rapid learning curve, Naruto couldn't help but admire her intelligence and determination. He smiled, appreciating her happiness in that moment. Satisfied with what he had seen, Naruto decided to head back to camp and catch some more sleep. However, his departure was interrupted by the sound of a snapping twig beneath his foot.

Ino and Asuma's attention turned toward the noise, their gazes locking onto Naruto standing at a distance. Ino waved at him and asked if he had witnessed her successful attempt. Naruto nodded in affirmation, expressing his admiration for her achievement. Ino's face lit up at Naruto's praise. Asuma then interjected, resuming their training session.

"Now that you've grasped the first part, let's move on to the second part. The Katon: Hi no Naka ni Kakureru no Jutsu (Fire Release: Hiding in Fire Technique) is similar to the Meisaigakure no Jutsu (Hiding with Camouflage Technique), but this time, you'll need to apply it to fire. Imagine the fire as a wall that you must blend into. Understand?" Asuma explained to Ino.

Ino nodded, determined to conquer the next challenge. Asuma briefly shifted his attention to Naruto, curious about his potential dual nature affinities. However, Asuma decided to postpone any testing until they returned to Konoha, allowing the Hokage to witness it firsthand.

Recognizing the need for training all around, Asuma turned to Naruto. "Naruto, go ahead and wake Shino. I think the two of you should engage in some training. Also, please help pack up our belongings," Asuma instructed Naruto. Naruto nodded in acknowledgment but had one more question before leaving.

"Hey, Asuma-sensei, is it possible for me to send thoughts to my clones, or is it only a one-way communication where they can send their memories to me?" Naruto asked, seeking clarification.

Asuma pondered the question, realizing he hadn't given it much thought before. "Hmm... As far as I know, you can only receive memories from your clones. That's the extent of it. It's an interesting question, though. Perhaps you should inquire with the Hokage himself," Asuma responded. While it wasn't the answer Naruto had hoped for, it satisfied his curiosity for now. With eagerness in his steps, Naruto sprinted back to the camp to wake up Shino, excited about the prospect of learning new jutsu.

- Five Minutes Later -

Both Shino and Naruto had arrived at the training area where Asuma and Ino were practicing. Ino was still focused on perfecting the Katon: Hi no Naka ni Kakureru no Jutsu (Fire Release: Hiding in Fire Technique), making steady progress. Asuma provided the fire for her practice to ensure she didn't deplete her chakra reserves quickly.

"Good, you're both here. Now you can start your training, and while you were away, I decided to teach you some useful jutsu that complement your existing abilities. Did you two make sure to pack everything?" Asuma inquired.

"Yes, everything is packed. Though there's still some soot and ashes from the campfire," Naruto reported.

"Don't worry, I'll take care of it later. Training is our priority for now," Asuma replied.

"Awesome! So, what jutsu will you be teaching us, Asuma-sensei?" Naruto asked eagerly.

"Well, since you have a fire affinity, Naruto, I'll teach you two jutsu. The first is the Katon: Gokakyu no Jutsu (Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique), and the second is the Katon: Moeru Ken no Jutsu (Fire Release: Burning Fists Technique). You can decide which one you want to learn first. Shino, as for you, since you have an earth affinity, I'll be teaching you an earth-style jutsu though I don't know many earth-style jutsu, but I have one in mind that could work well with your Hijutsu: Mushitatsumaki (Hidden Jutsu: Insect Tornado). It's called the Doton: Tsuchi Kairo (Earth Release: Earth Corridor). This jutsu allows you to create an earth barrier to contain the tornado and concentrate its force. It will also prevent your opponent from escaping the tornado," Asuma explained.

Naruto tapped Asuma's shoulder, prompting him to turn around and ask if Naruto had made a decision. "Have you decided?" Asuma inquired.

"You bet, dattebayo!" Naruto replied with a foxy grin, surprising Asuma. He had anticipated that Naruto would choose to learn the Katon: Gokakyu no Jutsu (Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique) first.

"So which one did you choose?"

"I want to learn the Katon: Moeru Ken no Jutsu (Fire Release: Burning Fists Technique) first, hehe," Naruto answered.

Asuma was intrigued by Naruto's choice and wondered about the reasoning behind it. "Tell me, Naruto, why did you choose that one?" Asuma asked.

"Well... As much as I'd love to learn the Katon: Gokakyu no Jutsu (Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique), I think it's better for me to start with the Katon: Moeru Ken no Jutsu (Fire Release: Burning Fists Technique). It seems like it would work well with my Nebaiken style, and I already know the Katon: Housenka no Jutsu (Fire Release: Phoenix Flower Jutsu) for projectile attacks. Plus, I don't want to steal Ino's spotlight since she's learning offensive jutsu," Naruto explained with a grin.

"He's even considering Ino's feelings... Interesting," Asuma thought to himself, impressed by Naruto's consideration. It also happened that Naruto had chosen the easier jutsu to learn, as the Katon: Gokakyu no Jutsu (Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique) required more time to master. Asuma took out a cigarette from his case, lit it, and took a puff, knowing that the training session ahead would be intense.

"Alright then, let's get down to business," he said to Naruto and Shino, preparing them for their day of training.

- After Training -

After dedicating himself to training for approximately three hours, Asuma made the decision to call it quits for the time being. As the weary instructor gathered his students once more, he couldn't help but acknowledge the nomadic nature of their recent existence. Days had blurred into transitory periods, leaving them in constant motion. Removing any trace of their presence from the makeshift training ground became a priority to evade Gato's henchmen. Moreover, the encroaching darkness signaled an opportune moment to set off on their journey.

As they walked, Asuma took the opportunity to brief his students on their next course of action. Their plan revolved around a strategic strike on both Kushimaru and Kimimaro, recognizing that control played a pivotal role in any battle. The idea of engaging on their terms offered the best chance for victory.

"So, we're going to-" Naruto's sentence abruptly ended as he stumbled over an obstacle. Dusting himself off and getting back on his feet, he sheepishly admitted, "Hehe... Sorry, my bad," accompanied by a goofy grin and a scratch on the back of his head. Ino responded with an eye roll, while Shino remained unfazed. Asuma, curious about Naruto's unfinished statement, inquired, "What were you saying, Naruto?"

Naruto, gathering his thoughts, resumed, "So, we're going to find them, Asuma-sensei?"

"Exactly," affirmed Asuma. "This time, we'll catch them off guard, armed with a newly devised plan. But remember, stay vigilant. Merely revealing their hand doesn't mean they don't possess hidden strengths." Asuma's explanation received nods of understanding from all three of his students. Although slightly anxious about facing Kimimaro once again, they felt a newfound confidence in approaching the battle, armed with knowledge instead of going in blindly. All they could hope for now was that their revised strategy would prove effective against Kimimaro.

Team 10 had been walking for about half an hour, covering a considerable distance from their previous location. They were now retracing their steps, heading back towards Gato's fortress. Sensing the need to pause, Asuma signaled for his students to halt.

"We've gone far enough. You all know the routine," Asuma directed his students. Like a well-rehearsed routine, they understood their individual tasks. Naruto and Shino were tasked with gathering firewood, while Ino tidied up their belongings, consolidating everything in one spot.

With a swift motion, Naruto and Shino fashioned a campfire in the shape of a teepee, igniting it using Naruto's previously employed jutsu. "Katon: Hoteri Ougigata no Jutsu (Fire Release: Flash Fan Technique)," Naruto declared, as the flames danced to life. Once their packed provisions were consumed, exhaustion from their earlier training sessions washed over them, signaling the end of the day. Asuma, taking the first watch, and Shino, the second, had now passed the torch to Naruto for the night, with Ino assuming the subsequent shift.

It didn't take long for the three of them to succumb to sleep's embrace, leaving Naruto, the blond-haired protagonist, to contemplate his own thoughts. Recollections of their recent mission, the one that took place on the ranch, flooded his mind. Naruto couldn't ignore the fact that it had been a close fight, causing him to wonder if they truly stood a chance against formidable opponents like Kimimaro and Kushimaru. Yet, unwavering in spirit, Naruto refused to surrender or retreat. He had come this far; why should he stop now? This was merely another hurdle in his path, and he was prepared to overcome it, even if he had to claw his way through.

- Meanwhile: Somewhere in the woods -

Kushimaru sat leisurely against a tree, meticulously cleaning his sword. Suddenly, a faint vibration coursed through the ninja wire he had strategically positioned throughout the forest. A mischievous smirk curled his lips as he realized that he had successfully detected the whereabouts of his prey. With his network of ninja wires encircling Gato's fortress, tracking them down would now be a breeze. Anticipation swelled within him as he contemplated the prospect of both relishing in the thrill and ensuring their capture. Rising from his perch, Kushimaru turned his attention to Kimimaro, who stood nearby, ready and waiting.

"Kimimaro, we're going. Our guests have returned, and this time, they're not going anywhere," Kushimaru cackled with a touch of madness. With a shared understanding, the two of them embarked on their journey, eager to confront their unsuspecting guests.
