New Normal
"Alright Cecil, what's exactly going on?" he asked the GDA director as he finished stuffing his school uniform into his bag and flew through the sky. He had been on his way to school this morning, only to have been called Mid Flight that Cecil needed him to take care of something nearby. Thankfully, Mako had gotten the idea to wear his costume underneath his regular clothes for just such an occasion after reading some old comics where superheroes did the same thing.
'Prisoner convoy was forced to divert it's course. The transport malfunctioned and ended up sending the thing over the side of a bridge. Escaped convict is a villain going by 'The Elephant', his quirk is that he has the proportionate strength of an elephant relative to a human. He's a walking wrecking ball and he's on the run. Shouldn't be hard to find him once you reach the site.' Cecil explained as Invincible shot down through the sky towards the city below.
Cecil was right about the damage, from the overpass that had a section of it's railing missing to the crash site below with the doors of truck kicked off, there was a trail of destruction going through the city. Flying down to the truck, he looked inside to see the drivers out cold but alive. Pulling the door off its hinges, he reached inside and pulled them a fair distance away from the transport truck for safety before taking off into the air and flying down the street following the trail of destruction.
Ahead of him there was a fork in the road, which this Elephant seemed to disagree with and simply barrel through the building separating the roads, leaving a massive hole the size of a tank in his wake. Flying through the wreckage, he saw something go flying up into the air in the distance. Darting up towards it, his eyes widened when he saw it was a car! "Oh crap!" he exclaimed as he flew at the vehicle as it flipped through the air, stopping in its projected path, the Viltrumite opened his arms wide and caught the car by the underside, the momentum pushing him back through the air until he absorbed most of it and gently began to lower him and the car to the ground.
Touching down on the road, he set the car down on its wheels before looking inside at the passengers through the broken window, "Are you all ok?" he asked, the driver, a man, and a woman, had some cuts on their face and in the back, the child was shaking in fear, but aside from the superficial wounds they all looked fine.
"We-we were driving and then…then that man-" the woman sputtered out as Invincible nodded.
"It's ok, it's ok. Look, the police are on their way with ambulances, your nowhere near the guy who did this but I gotta go make sure he doesn't hurt anyone else ok?" he asked, the man shakily nodded. "Ok, I'll be back to make sure your ok!" he promised before taking off into the air directly to where the car was thrown from as fast as he could fly.
Looking down from above, Mako saw a massive man heading straight for a park were people were! He darted through the sky and curved around to that he came on the Elephant from the side, striking him in the side of the head, hard. The massive man was sent down the road and crushed a parked car he bounced off before hitting the street. The man picked himself up, he wore a large grey costume that looked to resemble actual elephant hide, complete with mask that covered his face except for his mouth. Like his namesake, he had a long nose and ears on the sides of his head that resembled that of the animal. "Hey! Who do you think you are?!" he shouted.
"Invincible. And I'm going to take a bet that you're not." the teen replied as he landed on the ground in front of the man as he stood up. Mako had to crane his head back to glare up at the man. "I'm going to give you one chance to come quietly." he stated. Out the corner of his eye he saw a crowd of onlookers gather and record the villain and his confrontation on their phones.
The man looked down at him before bellowing out in laughter, "BWAHAHAHA! You! You little pipsqueak?!" he laughed out.
Mako smirked, "The pipsqueak that just laid you out? Yeah." he affirmed, making the man's smile vanish and be replaced with a sneer. His fists raised up and swung down onto Mako, whose hands shot up and caught them at his wrists! The weight of the attack caused the ground to crater around the two of them, Mako gritted his teeth as he held up the massive hands. Slowly Elephant's arms rose up from Invincible floating up high enough with a leg tucked in, which he then slammed into the Elephant's stomach!
The strength left the elephant's arms as he keeled over as Mako drew his fist back and uppercutted the man into the air, the man spun through the air from the hit before landing face down a few feet away. Mako flew over and hovered off the ground, crossing his arms over his chest as he flew over the Elephant who was hunched over. "You good dude?" he asked, the villain gasping for breath.
Suddenly he whirled around and sucker punched Invincible, the teen knocked back through the air a few feet before stopping himself, the Elephant looked over to the side of the road and saw a truck parked. Reaching over, he picked up the vehicle by the side and lifted it over his head, "Oh no ma, come on!" someone called out before the Villain was tackled by Invincible, the car falling down to the street on its tires. "Oh thank you god."
The Elephant punched Mako off him, sending him across the street to the side of car which crushed beneath his impact, shooting off the car the Elephant swung at him which Mako flew under and around to the back of him where he punched him in the back of his head, following through with the punch and spinning around to continue to punch the Elephant in the side of the head! The villain backhanded the hero away once more, but Invincible resumed his attack.
Hitting the villain across the face with one hand while his other grabbed the man's trunk, pulling on it to pull him back in to punch him again. The man leaned back and forth with each blow and pull back to another punch until the villain stumbled back after Mako released his trunk, his face a little bloody with a broken nose and Invincible's fist a little bloody, "Look buddy, I can either keep doing this, or you can give up." he said to the villain who was holding his now busted nose.
"Ssgghhhhcrreeew yoouusf." he mumbled before falling back onto the pavement, Invincible tilted his head, not sure if he was being lured in for another sucker punch. He tapped his foot against the villain's who simply groaned.
"Well you….sorta gave up….in a sense." Mako said before he reached up to his ear and tapped his earpiece, "Cecil I think he's down. Do you need me to stick around?" he asked.
'No your good kid. I'll portal a containment team to secure the area and him for transport. Good job.' he answered.
"Ok, and there's a car that got tossed by this guy. Can you make sure the people inside get treated?" he asked, his mind flashing back to the fight between him and his dad for a moment and seeing the people's bodies who had been decimated.
'Sure thing kid. I'll get local PD to get them checked out.' Cecil answered.
Mako nodding before taking his hand off his ear. Looking back the way he came, he saw the truck that was about to be thrown and its owner inspecting it for damage. Mako's gaze drifted to the people who had stayed behind to record the entire fight, they were all watching him with trepidation and fear.
"What's he doing?"
"He's just standing there looking at us."
"Should we go? I mean…."
"Honey get away! He's omni man's son!"
"Wait that's him!? Oh god!"
Mako sighed before taking off into the air and doubling back the way he came towards where he had set down the car that had went airborne. Coming down towards the car, he saw the mother and father holding their son in relief, "Hey are you all right?" he asked as he slowed himself down and landed in front of the family. The father turned to him with a relieved expression.
"Y-Yes, we're fine. Me and my wife are a little cut up but….but Injo is fine." he breathed out, looking to his son who was staring at Mako with wide eyes.
The teen let out his own breath of relief, not even wanting to imagine what would have been if he hadn't been here. "Good, the police are on their way here. They'll take care of you." he said, looking over both he husband and wife. They had some minor cuts from their shattered window, but they didn't look too roughed up, looking down at the boy, who was wearing a All Might hoodie, hid behind his mother's leg with a sniffle.
The mother bowed her head slightly, "I'm sorry, he's shy."
Invincible smiled understandingly, "It's fine." he assured her as she gently urged her son out from behind her leg. He gave the kid a smile, "My friend's a All Might fan too." he said, pointing at the child's hoodie, which he looked down at before looking back up at him. He gave the child a wave, "See ya." he said before taking off into the sky with a flourish and a spin to direct him on the direction of school.
"I can't believe you were fifteen minutes late to homeroom and you didn't get in trouble!" Kaminari exclaimed as the class let out. He, Mako, and Izuku all walked out of class with the two friends intending to eat together as usual.
"Yeah but I also missed fifteen minutes of class, I don't have any notes or anything on what happened." Mako replied. The electric user seemed to realize the predicament and winced as Mako turned to Izuku, "Hate to ask man but can I go over your notes?" he asked, not wanting to have to rely on his friend for his own lateness.
Izuku shook his head, "Oh sure thing! Aizawa Sensei didn't cover that much so it should be easy." he assured as the trio reached the lunchroom. Unlike a few days ago, no one spoke up or stared at Mako as he entered the room after Lunch Rush's stern reprimand for their collective actions. And Mako couldn't blame them, he'd regret being kicked out of the pro hero's cafeteria and missing out on all the good food as much as anyone else.
Grabbing a bowl of pulled pork, Mako sat down beside Izuku, with Momo and Jiro taking up the seat across from them. "You guys don't mind if we sit here do you?" Jiro asked as Mako unclipped his chopsticks and shrugged, "Thanks." she said for the two of them as they sat down opposite of the boys.
Izuku immediately stiffened up, making Mako roll his eyes to himself, neither of them really had a lot of experience with girls growing up. Mako at least was able to hold on conversation with one, but Izuku whom already had a nervous streak a mile long, wasn't much better when it came to the opposite sex. Speaking of girls…. Mako thought as a smile bloomed on his face, thinking back to his and Melissa's kiss. It had been a few days since then and the two had been messaging each other after school when Mako couldn't fly there.
Izuku looked out the corner of his eye and saw Mako smiling to himself, he had noticed he had been doing it a lot lately and it put his mind at ease knowing his friend found….well, something that could give him this much joy in life after what his father did. It's probably a new comic book series or something. he thought as he took a bite of his rice patty.
"So Mako, how's the hero life?" Jiro asked curiously, drawing the other student out of his thoughts.
"Honestly? It's not as bad as I thought." Mako admitted, "I mean I'm not really doing everything needed. I mean yesterday we went over how heroes in the past would need warrants to do all of their work until later on. But all that I've been doing is response jobs, just today I had to stop an escaped convict in an Elephant suit." he explained.
Jiro hummed while Momo cupped her chin, "So you haven't needed to fill out any Hero Forums or reports then?" she asked.
Mako shook his head, "No, that's one of the perks of being a GDA agent. I asked Cecil about it and said that being an agent means that the GDA takes care of stuff like that." he explained nonchalantly.
Jiro's head tilted to the side, "So your basically an acting Pro then? Can you respond to anything or whatever your boss tells you about" she asked. They all knew that heroes didn't all operate in the same way. Some where investigative like Aizawa, others were more public servants like All Might who went on patrols and were called in for situations, others like Snipe were called in to deal with specific situations.
"I asked him and he said that I shouldn't 'go looking for any trouble' since I'm still in school. But if something happens to me while I'm minding my own business? Then I can act. I do need to inform him though." he explained as Izuku looked at his phone while he ate and nearly choked, "Dude what?" he asked when he slapped him on the shoulder and held his phone up, Momo and Jiro leaned over the table to look, the three all saw a video of him in his costume from the perspective of the onlookers he saw earlier.
Below the video the title read, 'Invincible Eliminates Elephant!' which caused Mako to wince at how that sounded. "Oh wow that dude is huge!" Jiro exclaimed before watching Mako catch the villain's hands.
Momo turned to Mako who was watching in just as much surprise as they were, "He's the escaped prisoner?" she asked, he nodded as the video showed him kick the Elephant away. She cupped her chin as she watched the video, "Hmmm…." she hummed.
"What?" he asked.
"Oh! Nothing, I was just wondering how I would fair against him with my quirk." she explained with a wave of her hand.
Jiro turned to her with a raised brow, "I think you'd do ok. Maybe some super cable or something?" she guessed. Izuku turned the video back to himself and watched the remainder of the video. He winced when he saw Mako be thrown into a car, but then saw he quickly countered and got the villain on the ropes, Mako noticed the pensive look his friend had as he watched the video. While he never outwardly said it, he could tell that his friend was somewhat frustrated with his quirk progress so far, he was for all intent and purposes a glass cannon.
He nudged his friend, "Hey, your improving man." he said positively as he turned to look at him. Izuku offered a small grateful smile but turned back to the video and frowned when he looked down at the comments. Quickly turning of his phone, he pocketed it and resumed eating, "So what are you guys doing for the Sports Festival?" he asked.
"I'm studying books on chemical compositions so I can improve my arsenal." Momo explained.
Jiro's earphone jack lifted up, "I'm trying to improve my flexibility with my quirk." she added. The two let their answers sit for a beat before their heads dropped, "It's not enough." they both said.
Mako rubbed the back of his head sheepishly, "Well I wouldn't say that I mean you never know what the first two events are going to be." he said positively. The Sports Festival had three events each year, the first two being randomly selected from a pool of activities, while the last event was a tournament.
Jiro looked up at him, "Easy for you to say mister super strength and flight." she said dryly.
Mako frowned, "Yeah well, not strong enough. Or fast enough yet. I've been working on my speed every day, I go out flying and try and push myself, but I don't know how I can improve my strength. What good is speed if when I hit the guy it does nothing?" he asked.
Momo hummed in thought, "Well why not ask one of the teachers for advice?" she suggested. "They're here to help us reach our full potential."
He shrugged, "I'd love to but who here really knows how? I mean Aizawa sensei's a great strategist, but he doesn't have super strength. I'd ask All Might but…..well considering how him and my dad were….." he trailed off, the girls somberly nodding in understanding. Izuku stiffened up beside him but he didn't notice. "I've been sparring with Kirishima, but…..I like the dude, but I'm not feeling improvement." he said sadly. The other student was a really nice guy, and he did help him hone his fighting style, as well as show him how to hold back when needed, but he ended up cracking his armor a number of times during their spars to the point he didn't feel it was safe.
I mean I heard of cracked skin but it's not actually cracked! he thought to himself.
As the group finished their food, Mako's phone chimed with a text message, pulling it out he smiled when he saw it was from Melissa.
[Melissa: Just saw that video of you!]
[Mako: The one with the Elephant guy?]
[Melissa: Yes]
[Melissa: It's sorta funny to see someone so small beat up someone so big.]
[Mako: Hey! I'm not small! I am perfectly average….ish]
[Melissa: Well I also just saw Godzillo so my perspective is a little off.]
[Mako: Aw man he's so cool! He's at I-Island?]
[Melissa: Yeah he drops by often, everyone likes him.]
The next message was a selfie of her with Godzillo in the background giving her a peace sign, Mako smirks and decides to make that his profile picture for her when she messages him. [Mako: So that's been my day. How's yours?] he messaged her. What he got back was a picture of her workstation with various fabrics.
[Melissa: Trying to make a fabric that can take extreme heat. Yours is pretty durable but if you go so fast it might burn off.] he read.
[Mako: Want me to help you test them out?]
[Melissa: Thanks but we got special equipment for that.]
[Mako: Or a blowtorch!]
[Melissa: XD]
{Melissa: Yes, blowtorches as well.]
[Mako: You have the coolest classes ever you know what?]
The bell rang for the end of lunch, which Mako told Melissa via message before standing up, missing how Jiro and Momo were watching him throughout the entire exchange with curious looks. "He seemed….happy." Jiro observed.
Momo nodded, "Yes…suspiciously so…." she agreed. The two girls humming in unison as they began to ponder what could make Mako so happy….
After lunch had ended, Class 1-A's next class was Hero Studies, meaning more time to train for the upcoming festival. After changing into their costumes and heading to ground Beta for training, they were greeted with an unexpected welcome, "I AM HERE! BECAUSE I'M A RESPONSIBLE TEACHER!' All Might greeted his students, waring his modern-day costume, surprising a lot of the class with their teacher's appearance as he had been absent since the confrontation with Omni Man at the USJ.
Which of course made Mako internally shrink at the sight of their other teacher, he seemingly was recovered from the battle but the fact that his father had outright attacked the symbol of peace made him feel awkward at least. "Forgive my for my absence students, there's been some matters which I've needed to attend to. Now then, Aizawa will be out today for treatment so I'll be supervising you all today." he announced, causing most of the classes faces to light up.
As the class dispersed with their exercises, Mako turned to the area with a sigh, hi fight with Elephant this morning pushed him a little bit, he wasn't as strong as his dad was, but he still hit hard enough that Mako knew he was a step up from where he was at currently. Still better then those Lizard League punks. he thought as a large figure approached him from behind, which Mako became aware of when a shadow dropped over him.
"Young Mako! I saw your confrontation you had this morning." All Might informed him as the teen turned to face him. He gave his student a thumbs up, "You did well in your battle, you kept the pressure on so your foe didn't have the chance to flee. Excellent work!" he praised, making the masked teen smile in appreciation. For whatever bad thing was said about him online or by strangers, the people who knew him had nothing but praise for the most part.
"Thanks All Might, any notes?" he asked with a smile.
The Symbol of Peace raised a finger, "A few, while you did contain the villain to an area, it was a populated one. Those bystanders in the park could have been in danger if your opponent set their sights on them." he informed.
Mako frowned slightly, "But they were the ones standing around, I didn't even notice them until after the fight. I know I should take better care of my surroundings because of that, but if they're the ones standing around taking video…." he trailed off before shaking his head. "No, your right. I'll make sure to say something next time."
All Might nodded approvingly, "I understand the frustration with how the public can act, they put their faith in us heroes to keep them safe, sometime to the point of a fault. However we cannot simply push aside this responsibility for their bad judgement." he explained. Mako nodded in understanding, he thought of all the people inside the building where he and his dad had fought, how they were all too scared to even move. "Speaking of the crowd, that brings me to my second point." he said, his tone becoming less instructive and instead softer, "I know that right now your relationship with the general public isn't well received for actions beyond your control."
"My dad being an Imperialist Alien, yeah." Mako interjected.
"But if you want them to change their perspective, you need to show them who you are. I know we haven't gotten into public relations in the class yet, but I'd recommend looking at how pros interact with bystanders, look at ones who have had less then stellar reputations and how they've won the public back." he advised.
Mako looked down and thought back to the family he met after the fight, he did good there, at least he hoped he did. "I did talk to these people who I saved for a minute, just to make sure they were ok." he admitted.
All Might nodded, "A good start. And remember, we're all here to help you with anything you're not sure about. You're in a very…..peculiar situation. There's no shame in asking for advice." he added.
Wait a second! "Um….can I ask you something?" he asked, his teacher nodded, "Ok so my main goal is to get stronger, obviously. And my powers increase the more that I push myself. But when I train, I can't really do that here since….well I was wondering if you had any advice for me?" he asked hopefully.
The symbol of peace's smile never faltered as he cupped his chin, "I might have a solution to your problem." he said quickly, "Your familiar with David Shield yes?" he asked, Mako's eyes widened at the sudden pull but nodded nevertheless, "It's no secret that he and I worked together in my early years, he helped me throughout the years to help me hone my power. I'm sure he could create something that could aid you." he offered.
Mako nearly smacked himself in the head, "Of course! Duh! Melissa's dad! Yeah he could probably make something that could push my limits!" he exclaimed. The answer was so obvious, he didn't know why he didn't think of it before, Well actually I think of a particular reason why I didn't think of it before. Last couple trips to I-Island haven't been on business. he thought to himself.
All Might tilted his head, "Melissa? You know her?" he asked in surprise.
"Oh yeah, she designed my costume." he said proudly, gesturing to his outfit, causing All Might to let out a small gasp before smiling proudly. "We're also dating now." All Might's smile vanished as his entire body stiffened at the casual phrase, "She's super smart, smarter than I am and….All Might?" he asked before the symbol of peace leaned down, and put his large hand on Mako's shoulder, feeling an intense protective feeling radiate off the hero.
"Forgive me young Metuki. Because it sounded like you said you were dating my NIECE." he said, the smile returning, however instead of the usual friendliness that it held which inspired safety. It was almost sinister with the gleam of his blue eye, causing a wave of fear to pass over the student.
"…..N…..Niece…..huh…..ah…..well….Oh! Well would you look at the time! I should be practicing my flying speed!" he suddenly said, slipping out from All Might's hand and shooting up into the sky like his life depended on it before shooting off across the school grounds.
"ALL MIGHT IS YOUR UNCLE?!" Mako whined to his girlfriend in her father's lab where he found her, after a strenuous workout of flying around the school without a break, which actually did help his endurance. Mako kept his head low for the rest of the day, making sure that Izuku was in front of him when he left the school as so not to be surprised by All Might waiting around some corner.
After that, he bolted for I-Island with two objectives in mind, firstly to take All Might up on his advice and speak with David Shield about something that can help him train. If he was going to stand any chance against Viltrumites, he was going to need to work himself hard. And secondly, tell Melissa that he could have used a heads up.
David watched Mako and Melissa, his daughter looking away while she played with her hands, a habit she had whenever she felt guilty about something, "Wellllll….not in the traditional sense. He's just a close friend of the family…whose also my godfather." she admitted as Mako collapsed back into the stool in her father's lab.
Mako gave her a look before hanging his head, "I told him we were dating right to his face…..the look he gave me? I'd rather face my dad again then ever see him like that." he said with a shiver. Maybe it was the fact that it was All Might, the symbol of peace, maybe it was the fact that due to whatever reason no one ever got a clear look at All Might's eyes, but when he looked at him like that? Mako felt scared.
"….wait you two are dating?" David asked.
Mako gave Melissa a flabbergasted look, "Seriously?!" he exclaimed.
Melissa turned to her father with a firm look, "Papa!" she said, pointing an accusatory finger at her father before he bellowed out in laughter, the daughter pouting at the joke he made at her expense before turning to Mako who seemed more amused by the situation then he was a second ago, "I told him already. He's just being mean." she said, crossing her arms over her chest, making Mako snort at how cute she looked.
"And I'm happy for both of you….and I'm even more glad you see Mako why I don't need to give you any sort of talk regarding my daughter." he said in amusement.
"All Might will snap me like a twig. Got it. Now, as for why I'm here, do you happen to have anything that could help me increase my strength?" he asked, getting both father and daughter's attention. "I need to find a way to exercise, which means pushing my limits, so I need some way to do that with my super strength." he explained.
Father and daughter both looked at one another before their expressions because curious, the family resemblance making its way to the surface. "Well traditionally exercise would do, but that foundation is based on having something for you to fight against in terms of weight." David said aloud.
Melissa hummed before turning to her father, "But even that would be a variable based on how quickly he adapts to it." she pointed out. "What would he need is something that's not based on a level of mass…what about magnetism?" she offered.
Mako gave them both a curious look but didn't interrupt as David's eyes widened at the possibility, "Yes that could work, we could use magnetic fields to mimic mass so he could exercise!" he said in agreement, the father and daughter both excited by the challenge that the project presented to them.
Mako could just blink at them, not entirely sure what they were saying as his earpiece rang, "Cecil?" he answered as he tapped his ear.
'Kid I need you to get to Japan ASAP, accident happened at Jenku Tower. I'll explain on the way.' he said, Mako nodding as he stood up and looked at Melissa and her dad.
"I gotta go, but I'll be back." he said, his girlfriend nodding to him in understanding before taking off through the window he entered the building from. Mako shot through the sky with his arms reaching out in front of him as Cecil spoke into his ear.
'There was an accident int eh underground garage of the tower, which caused the whole tower to become destabilized. Apparently somehow all the water was frozen within the pipes, the water expanded due to the freezing and destabilized the whole building. We're working on getting it evacuated but the bigger concern is if it falls, the damage it could do to the surrounding area.' Cecil explained.
Mako thought back to the collapsing building his father made with him, he swallowed stiffly, "Ok, so what do you need me to do?" he asked.
'There's heroes on the scene right now, I got in touch with them and informed them of your arrival, help with evacuations.' he instructed, Mako nodding as he flew through h clouds, the white streaks in the sky curling from the air flow that the teen made as he passed.
He arrived in Japan within the hour, I-Island thankfully being close to the island nation, arriving at the tower, he could see dozens of flashing lights of cops, ambulances, and firefighters as they assisted heroes with evacuation. The tower lived up to the title, easily being over thirty stories tall and rising far above the other buildings around it, "Alright Cecil I'm here, where do you need me?" he asked.
'Top floors, they haven't been evacuated yet. Start at 25 and work your way up.' Cecil instructed. Invincible nodded as he flew up alongside the length of the building, counting to himself until he reached the 25th floor and flew in through a window. '…that's the 22nd.' Cecil said, the Viltrumite flying out the window he broken through at the correction.
"Sorry! Sorry." Mako apologized.
'I swear that happens to someone every time it goes over ten stories.' Cecil said in his ear as Invincible flew through the correct window, finding a crowd of people at a stairwell that was blocked by a collapsed column.
"Everyone move aside!" he called out as he flew over, the civilians looked to him with alarm and immediately moved aside. Picking up the column with both his hands, he kicked the door open, "Ok everyone, the path is clear but don't rush!" he called out as he set the column down along the wall by the stairs so it wouldn't block the path while people evacuated.
Going into the stairwell, he flew up to the next floor as people were descending the staircase around him, reaching the next floor, he saw a hero with a blue costume with metal bands around his wrists and legs that went up to his elbows and knees respectively with some metal covering his torso as well. He had a blue mask that covered the top portion of his head with his mouth and chin exposed, with a metal helm covering his head overtop the cloth, his white lenses widened in chock at his appearance, "What are you doing here?!" he barked out as people ran past him.
"Look I know I'm a kid but I was told to come here so-" Invincible began.
"Forget it! We don't need your help Alien. We heroes got this." he said indignantly as he raised his arm back towards the floor he came out of, the silver bands flying off his wrist with a black glow to them, a second later, a trio of people were pulled out with the metal wrapped around their bodies to carry them out.
Invincible frowned as he flew up, "Whatever." he dismissed.
'Ignore him. Head for the top floor, the roof is beginning to cave in.' Cecil said, the teen shooting up through the stairwell towards the top floor, flying into the top floor of the building through a breached wall, he saw dozens of people rushing and crowding the exit stairwell. Looking up, he saw cracks beginning to form along the ceiling.
"Cecil what do I do? I don't think I can stop this!" he asked.
'Keep calm kid, we can't stop it but we're going to try and control the collapse, take out the wall on the far side of the room away from the people.' he instructed. Mako looked at the wall unsurely as the entire structure seemed to let out a wail, 'Kid!' Invincible shook his head and smashed through the wall, the section of the ceiling coming down as the teen flew out of the building. 'Good, now that should stop the ceiling for the moment but you need to get those people evacuated down to the floor below.'
Invincible doubled back through the now gaping hole and flew down to the door, above the people's head as they shouted and screamed.
"Get out o the way!"
"Move it!"
"The whole place is coming down!"
"Oh god this is it!"
Invincible stuck his fingers in his mouth and let out a loud whistle, getting the crowd's attention, "Listen up! The ceiling won't come down but we need to evacuate calmly if everyone is going to get out of here, ok?" he asked loudly so that everyone could hear him. It was then the teen saw a man sitting against the wall with a bloody arm. Hovering over, the people gave him a wide berth, "Oh man, ok is anyone else injured?" he asked.
The crowd shifted around as some people made their way to him, there were over ten people with visible injuries, one of them was holding a piece of their shirt to their face, and other had a nasty gash, and another was limping. "Ok listen up! Everyone whose injured line up against the wall, I'll get you down one at a time while everyone else evacuates though the stairwell, there's another hero down below who can help!" he said before picking the man up in his arms, "Is this ok?" he asked.
The man nodded before Invincible lifted off and flew out the building and down towards the first aid aera that had been set up a block away, 'Nice going there kid. Evacuations are going smoothly for now so I'm going to put you on injury duty. I'll have the heroes line up injured like you did, swoop in and get them here.' Cecil instructed as the hero dropped the wounded civilian off and flew back up to the tower and grabbed another just as he finished his instructions.
Fifteen minutes later, the medical station was full of wounded, Invincible laying a person who had some rebar through their leg, carefully down onto a bed to be treated by the large team of medics. Looking back up at the skyscraper, Invincible watched as chunks fell off to the surrounding area, "Cecil how's the evacuation going?" he asked as a heroine zoomed by him at a blur of white and orange towards the tower.
'We got most of them out by now but-' Cecil was interrupted by a loud groaning sound that echoed through the empty city streets, '-the thing is going to tip over soon, and that shockwave is going to cause more damage if it just fell in on itself.' Cecil said bitterly. Mako frowned at the information, he took off towards the building once more, seeing the same orange and white blur through the broken windows until it stopped on the 13th floor. flying through the window, he saw he woman from before had stopped at a collapsed desk with someone underneath.
"Hey sweetie, it's ok." she said.
She wore was in essence, a runner's suit that would be used in sport, it was mostly orange with white shoes built into the suit with lightning bolts on the side of her thighs, the orange of the costume ended around her midsection and tapered off to her sides where the rest of her upper costume was white. Her short blonde hair shifted as she turned to see him approach her, "Everything ok?" he asked.
She tilted her head down to the table, looking underneath, he saw a small girl holding her knees close to her chest, looking at them with fear, Invincible gave her a friendly smile, "Hey there." he greeted, "What are you doing under the table?" he asked.
She swallowed, "My…my daddy told me that when there's an earthquake to hide under the table." she admitted.
The woman smiled at her, "That's true, but we're heroes here, and it's our job to get you out of here." she told her. "I'll get you out of here safely before you can even count to ten." she said, giving the girl a confident wink.
"But….but my dad!" she said before the building started to shake again.
"I'll find your dad." Invincible said, "Where was the last place he was?" he asked.
The girl pointed in the direction behind them, "His-his office is at the end of the hall." she said, Invincible nodded and turned on his heel before taking off as the girl crawled out from beneath the table.
The teen flew down the hall, a few filing cabinets knocked over from the shakes blocked the path but he simply flew over them, and reached the door at the end of the hall. Opening it, he was met with an empty office, making him click his tongue before the ceiling collapsed onto him!
Pushing the rubble off him, Mako looked up to see the ceiling of the floor above begin to crack apart as well! "Cecil this place looks like it could fall apart any second! How are the evacuations going?" he asked.
'We're clear but we can't stop it from tipping over. We need to go with plan B.' Cecil told him.
"Ok, and that is?" Mako asked.
'Bring the building down before it topples over.' Cecil told him, making Mako's eyes shoot open.
"WHAT?" he barked out in disbelief. "Cecil I can't destroy a building!" he said, recalling his fight with his father and hearing how many people died because of it.
'Listen to me Mako, no one will get hurt, I'll have Outrun sweep the building again, once she confirms that no one is there, you fly down through it before it tips. Got it?' he asked. Mako let out a shaky breath before nodding to himself and flying out through the window of the office, shooting high up into the sky above the tower. Looking down he could see it just beginning to tip over, with how tall the building was it could crash into four or five smaller buildings beside it, and who knew how many people would be injured or worse, killed by that?
He saw the orange and white blur run into the building once again, he held his breath as he counted the seconds, his hands closing a few times as he prepared himself. 'Invincible? This is Outrun, I've checked the building, it's clear. Do your thing.' she told him over the earpiece.
He took a breath before diving down at superspeed towards the roof of the building, the teen's blur of blue crashed down straight into the building, each floor a BOOM of sound as he crashed through it all the way down to its foundation. The building fell into itself, dust and debris kicking up around it's base and it collapsed into a loud, and widespread pile od cement, metal, and glass.
A minute later, Invincible pushed his way to the top, crashing through the stone and gasping for breath, "Ugh! God, that was…..that was…." he shivered as he looked around for any sign of casualties, the blook covered stone from the battle with his father in his mind. When he saw no such red covering the debris, he let himself breath easy.
"YOU MOSNTER!" Invincible heard before a 'I' beam slammed into his back and sent him crashing down. Landing on his hands and knees, Invincible turned back to see the same hero with metal on himself from earlier looking at him with rage. "I KNEW IT! I KNEW YOU WERE JUST LIKE HIM!" he shouted as he lifted his hands, various pieces of metal rising out of the rubble.
Mako raised his arms t shield himself from the onslaught of metal that was sent his way, rebar cut across the shoulder of his costume, another beam hit him in the back, it piled on top of him! Pressing down onto him and crushing him against the ground! "Wait! Stop!" he tried to call out before an Orange blur punched the man in the face, knocking him back and breaking his focus on Invincible.
Invincible threw the metal off him as he shot up into the air, "Hey man you ok?" he whirled around to see the man who had saved him, Mako had to do a double take at what the man was wearing. It was the exact same costume he had tried on for Melissa! The man wearing it had dark skin, with his black hair forming cornrows down the back of his head, "Cecil told us what was going down, but apparently not everyone got the memo." he said, looking over at the other hero who was approached by what looked like a brown robot.
"Yeah uh….thanks….who uhm…are you?" Mako asked.
The man smiled, "Oh! I'm Bulletproof. I just joined the guardians." he said, raising his hand for Mako to shake, Invincible did and also realized that he was also flying!
Before Mako could start asking questions, the hero started back up, "But he's not human!" he barked out, pointing at Invincible as he turned his head to look back at him. Bulletproof frowned at the hero, "Just you wait! He'll turn on us just like his dad!" he said before turning and storming off, the Robot turning to the pair of flyers as they landed.
"Forgive me for that Invincible, I broadcasted Cecil's orders on the emergency frequency without getting into details." the copper-colored automation said as it raised its hand. "I am Robot. Leader of the Guardians of the Globe." he introduced. Mako shook his hand, but he barely put much movement into it, "Me, Bulletproof, and Outrun where diverted here while the rest of our team went on to investigate the cause of this disaster. When it was clear that we needed to evacuate, I requested you."
Invincible was taken aback, "Oh….um…thanks." he answered, looking back to where the metal hero walked off to. "Look if this is everything, I need to go." he said, pointing his thumb back over his shoulder.
Robot was silent for a second, "No, we do not require any further aid." he answered. Mako nodding as he flew up into the air.
Taking off back towards the island, he took a long deep breath before letting it out to calm himself down. What else do I expect? I mean everyone knows what my dad did, what did I really hope for? he thought to himself as he flew.
"Hey!" Invincible blinked and looked back over his shoulder to see Bulletproof flying after him, the teen slowed as the older hero pulled himself into a stop, "Holy hell your fast!" the guardian breathed out, trying to recover before talking again. "Look man I just…..I wanted to say thanks for the help back there." he said.
Mako sighed, "Yeah….no problem."
"No look I'm serious." Bulletproof insisted, "It isn't fair that you're getting a bum rap from your old man." he said sympathetically. "You stood up to him, that makes you ok in my book." he said, pointing a thumb back at himself, making Mako smile a little at the praise from the fellow hero.
"Thanks….I…really needed to hear that." Invincible admitted, "So um….kind of a weird question, but uhh, where'd your get the costume?" he asked in a casual manner.
Bulletproof grinned as he tugged at the fabric, "You like it? I-Island bargain bin! They were giving some old stuff away for new heroes, found this piece, got it refitted, and boom! Bulletproof." he said happily, Mako holding back a snicker to himself upon seeing how proud he was of his find. "Yours is cool too." he added, Mako nodding in application.
"Yeah thanks, see you around man. Gotta get back to my girlfriend." he said, giving him a more enthusiastic salute goodbye before shooting off towards I-Island. His spirits somewhat lifted by the other heroes' words. Ok yeah, I'm not the most well liked, but some people still like me…..that's not too bad.
Chitose Kizuki watched the footage of the downtown tower collapsing once again, her news station had been first on the scene to report on an accident at Jenku Tower. The blue skinned woman watched the footage of possibly the most talked about hero since All Might, Mako Metuki, apparently also known as Invincible. "This isn't his first appearance since his debut either, he's shown up at various incidents around the world in the past week." Chitose said as she clicked the remote in her hand, showing another video of the yellow, black, and blue hero.
The looked over her shoulder, brushing her violet hair aside and showing her green eyes to her employer, Rikitya Yotsubashi, CEO of Detnrat company. The man's watched the videos his associate showed him with peaked interest, his hand cupping his chin as he looked to the news producer. "It is interesting, especially given that he's merely a student at U.A. but if what our man at the GDA is to be believed, they sanction him by making him an agent of the organization." he pointed out.
Their….organization, was founded on a fairly simple belief, that everyone with a meta-ability should celebrate their abilities instead of needing to control them as society has deemed. Chitose nodded, "That's true, the same people who employed his father, so I asked our man to do some digging. And as it turns out? There's more to the fight then we know." she said, peaking her leader's interest as she pressed another button on the remote.
This time the image on the screen was of Invincible and Omni Man inside a building, Rikitya's head tilted, "I don't recognize this footage."
"That's because this is from the drones which the GDA themselves recorded. The entire battle, unedited, uncensored, and in it's entirety." she explained.
Rikitya's lips etched into a smile, "You wish to show this? At your news station?" he asked.
She shook her head, "No, the GDA could easily trace it back to me from there and I don't want to risk it. But if everyone sees this? This boy using his own meta-abilities to withstand his father, to show he's fighting for Earth? Without any limitation?" she asked.
Re-Destro smiled at her thought process, "Then we could spread our message wider than we even imagined, show people the liberty of their abilities without restriction! How they could protect themselves as well!" he exclaimed in excitement.
Chitose beamed as well, "The GDA will have to respond to it!" she added as she turned back to the video of a distressed looking Mako, "I can put pressure on, demand answers for those in charge, and finally I get the boy himself to say what he thinks of all of this." she said, her eyes trained on the target of her new story.
'Being a hero must be easy when you're Invincible.'
AN: Hoooboy I'm back, and man it's been a MONTH for me. Finals are here for fall semester, been hard at work on those with final projects due soon.
My cat, Charlie, unfortunately passed away this week and I've had to deal with that since thanksgiving.
I might be moving in the near future which in of itself is a whole deal I need to come to terms with. And some family drama has unfolded which I won't get into but suffice to say I have had to really look at some people in a different light.
But this fic has been a good escape for me, when I've been able to work on it. Now then, onto reviews!
For'Sleepy: No he deserves at least one. And not any planned at least, I know that in Vigilantes there's one who doesn't have a quirk, but we never really get mention of others like him so no. I mean it's only like what 4% of the world who don't have quirks?
Dracus: No I don't play anything made by Blizzard, and I won't until they start changing things.
Devil Dragon Stand Knight: I mean he got punched out a window for being an asshole. And he does grow as a person….eventually…..
Maelstrom Resurrected: No I haven't seen it yet, but that's on my watchlist.
Superpierce: The punch or the tone of the chapter?
D3ph0xL0v3r: See the events aren't really much of a reason, you could change those if you wanted to, but I think it's mainly how Mako feels. I think that when people are affected by the actions of others in their family, they tend to shrink in on themselves a little? They need time to recover before they're comfortable going out in public like that.
abarrow899: Honestly I thought of when Spider-Man did the same thing to Wolverine, just as funny then. Maybe even more because he threw him out of Avengers Tower.
Messiah of Authors: I mean it's also a delicate time for Mako, he's still finding his footing and Melissa understands that. So she's not going to be as confident as she would usually be. And yeah, Bakugo is one of my favorite characters in the series for that very reason.
Super Comrade: Thanks!
Guest 1: I….have never watched or read one piece….aside from that? Machinehead and Titain…..not sure yet. They actually don't have a big impact in the comics tbh? Like I don't think Machine head ever comes back. Titan does but only like a handful of times. Battle Beast however will be in this.
Dark Thundercat: See I don't really compare the rivalry to naruto's? I see it more as a fleshed out version of Goku and Vegeta from DBZ. I mean obviously DBZ is a template for a lot of shonen, Naruto included, but whereas Naruto is like…..stubborn to a faulty degree in his beliefs that are against Sasuke's? Izuku and Bakugo's are two sides of the same coin. Both want to be a hero, but they have different ideals of what that entails, and more interestingly, they both need some of what the other has to become greater heroes.
Nezha Firegood: I mean that's all but confirmed, Bakugo has an amazing quirk that sets him apart from most others so he'd get prasied for it, thus inflaiting his ego more and more as he grew up. And this is a society based around people who have quirks, and yes I'm sure that the ones that Bakugo had prior made things worse by ignoring his worse qualities with the justification of, 'Oh but he has such a good quirk!'.
And the reason that Aizawa or Nezu aren't too hard on him is probably that they don't know about any of it. I mean teachers don't know everything that goes on with their students, or even care at some schools. And if they even ask then they'll probably get a really watered down version of what Bakugo actually did. It doesn't matter how smart you are, if you don't know something is wrong to begin with you can't start solving the problem.
I mean shit, Persona 5's first act is all about how teachers will turn a blind eye to legit abuse just to maintain appearances. And Bakugo's change isn't directly brought about through izuku, it's through all might like you said but it's more out of guilt. To him, he believes that it's all his fault that All Might lost his power to AFO, and it's not until All Might tells him that they need to look at each other and learn from each other that he really starts to change.
He even realizes what his problem was by looking down on everyone around him and ignoring what his own faults were during his added license training.
But We do see later on that Izuku has had a profound effect on Bakugo.
And keep in mind, Bakugo when he gets to U.A. does act like a cocky prick, but he doesn't bully anyone. Because he's not the top dog like he was at his old school, he gets humbled on day two by the guy he saw as nothing for YEARS. And after that? He doesn't do anything bad and gets away with it, closest we get is his fight with Uraraka in the Sports Festival and it's because he's not holding back because it's a fight.
I'm not saying he's never done anything wrong of course, but he does beat himself up for it later on.
Aryton Kaius: I mean Bakugo does eventually find that out himself, during the extra training with Shoto, he sees this cocky and arrogant kid who has a powerful quirk and sees who he used to be. He recognizes that the way he thought of things are flawed, and we see that he changes that during the Class 1A and 1B mock battles, he puts his teammate's safety up on his priority, saving them and winning, something that watching Deku has taught him.
Guest 2: I feel like by the time this story ends…..Mako will punch all three of them at some point.
Sarcasam Sage 626: Oh man Levy is one of the most terrifying villains in Invincible, I cannot wait for him to appear next season on the show. And yeah when your upset, you say things that you shouldn't say or don't mean, it happens to everyone at some point and it's what happened with Kali here.
Dragon King of the West: Yeah it's gonna take some work and goodwill to undo all that collateral damage….actually is it collateral if he meant to do it? Hmm…
