What's in A Name?
One of the things that Mako had all but abandoned since gaining his powers was using public transportation. It used to be that he and Izuku would either walk to school on foot, or catch a bus if they were early enough to grab one. But once he could fly, he hardly ever took a train, bus, or even a car ride anywhere, that lessened even more once the public found out his relation to his father. And it generally worked for Mako if he was being honest…that was until it rained.
"Crap!" Mako exclaimed as the teen flew through the rain. He wore his hero costume while his school clothes were tucked into his school bag to keep dry, while it would normally take him a short while to reach the school, with the rain he didn't want to risk flying into something while his vision was obscured by the rain. "Ok design flaw, flying through rain with goggles, basically like driving a car without wipers." Mako said to himself as he wiped his goggles clean for the dozenth time in the past few minutes.
Thankfully he could see U.A. through the rain, and on the sidewalk he could see a familiar looking face under an umbrella, "Hey make room!" he called out to Izuku who looked up from underneath his umbrella, the green haired teel jumped back in startlement as Mako landed in front of him and went to his friend's side underneath the umbrella that barely had enough room for them both, "Sorry man I just gotta dry my mask for a second." he apologized as he pulled his yellow mask off his head, shaking his head to dry the water in his hair.
Izuku titled his head, "Wait you flew here?"
"Yeah? Why?" Mako asked.
Izuku pointed up at the sky, "Well why didn't you fly up ABOVE the clouds and then just fly down once you were over the school?" he asked, casing Mako to pause as he was wringing out his mask. A grin spread across Izuku's face as Mako turned to him with a deadpanned expression, "I mean…..that's what I would do."
"Ah shut up." Mako replied as he shoved his friend with his elbow.
"This is no time for idle chitchat you two!" The pair turned their heads to see Iida rushing towards them in a full sprint through the rain wearing a poncho and rain boots! "We'll be late! Also good morning my friends!" he said as he ran past the two of them.
Mako and Izuku looked at one another before running after him, reaching the lobby, Izuku set his umbrella into one of the holders while Iida walked over to the cubie where he would put his boots and poncho in. Mako nudged Izuku, his friend looked at him while he tilted his head towards Iida with an unsure look. They had both heard how Iida's older brother, Ingenium, had been injured by the Hero Killer in Hosu City during the Sports Festival.
Both friends had tried reaching out to Iida during their days off but to no avail, they had concluded that he wished for some time alone. However he was acting like….well….nothing had happened.
Izuku shrugged his shoulders in bafflement, Mako rubbed the back of his head in response before turning to the engine user, "So….Iida-" he began as the bespectacled teen turned to him with a friendly smile.
He raised a hand, "Before you say anything, you don't need to worry about my brother. I'm sorry if my absence caused either of you concern. But I'm fine now, really." he assured the two. Mako closed his mouth and gave him an unsure look, he seemed to be alright, "Also Mako what are you doing in your hero uniform?! Aren't you aware it's against school regulation?" he asked with a stricter voice.
Mako's shoulders dropped, Ok maybe he is actually ok. "I didn't want to get my clothes wet so I wore this. I'm going to change before class."
Iida titled his head, "Then why didn't you fly above the-"
"I'M CHANGING NOW GOODBYE." Mako growled out through gritted teeth as he stomped off, Izuku covering his mouth to stifle his laughter.
After quickly changing into his school uniform in the restroom, Mako arrived in class just before Aizawa walked in, causing the entire class to appear in their seats as fast as they could, less they earn the wrath of their now fully recovered teacher, the bandages that covered him head to toe having finally been removed. The only evidence of the damage he sustained being the small crescent shaped scar beneath his eye, "Glad to see you've recovered Aizawa-Sensei." Tsuyu said to the teacher.
Eraserhead scratched at the skin beneath his unscared eye, "Recovery Girl's treatment took some time, but never mind that. Today we have a special class of Hero Informatics." he announced.
Mako bit his lip as he tried to recall what that subject was, Is that the one where we learn about what we can charge people with? he asked himself.
"You'll be coming up with your hero aliases today." Aizawa clarified, causing the class to stand up in cheer before his hair stood up and his eyes flashed red, silencing the entire class and making them return to their seats obediently. "First thing's first, the pro hero draft picks I mentioned have come in. Keep in mind that just because you get an offer doesn't mean that it's a lock. There's still time for their interest to wane before you graduate, any and all offers can be revoked, it's not uncommon." he explained.
Tooru raised her hand, "So just because we're picked now, doesn't mean we have no more hurdles to clear?" she asked.
Aizawa nodded, "Precisely. Now, here's the draft pick numbers." he said before clicking his remote, the numbers for the top nine students with the most offers.
Mako guffawed at two things, first was the absolute difference in amount of offers that the first two students had gotten. Where the other seven students went up into the low triple digits, the top two had nearly five thousand each. And secondly unlike the tournament, Todoroki had the most offers behind Bakugo, "Well that checks out. No one wants to work with the student who can't say anything without screaming." he said dryly.
"The hell did you say?! If I scared off any pros it's only 'cuz their weak!" Bakugo barked at him.
"And still you yell." Mako dryly replied.
"Regardless of whatever offers you may or may not have, you'll all have a chance to work alongside pros." Aizawa said, putting most of the class at ease. "It's true that you've all gotten experience that other classes haven't, but seeing pros in action and taking part yourselves will be worthwhile experience." he said, his gaze turning directly to Mako which made the student stiffen at attention.
"Now for your hero names, they're only tentative but you'll still want to choose carefully-" he began before the door opened.
"Or you'll have hell to pay later!" Mako turned to the sound of the familiar voice to see Midnight strut into the room. "The name that you pick might end up be what the world ends up calling you. It's happened to plenty of pros out there!" she said with a friendly warning.
Aizawa gave the other teacher a bored expression, "True enough. Midnight will help you with the accessibility of the names you pick. Ask what future do you see for yourself, the name you choose will help establish a certain image with you. Because names are able to reflect one's character." he said as he pulled up his sleeping bag.
As white boards were handed out to the students to use their names on, Mako probably had the easiest time of selecting his name as he already had one.
Fifteen Minutes later, Midnight clapped her hands together, "Alright then! Let's see what you got!" she said encouragingly. Mako rose his hand up, she snapped her fingers to him, "Mako! Thank you for volunteering!"
The teen rose from his eat and stood in front of the podium, he exhaled a quick breath, "So you guys might have heard it already but I came up with this before school started." he said before flipping his whiteboard to reveal his name in all capital letters with a small arch on the bottom of them, INVINCIBLE.
Mineta tilted his head, "But you're not though." he stated obliviously.
Mako rubbed the back of his head with a sheepish grin, "I mean….yeah, not physically but that's not all that matters. I mean if I want to do this? Be a hero and everything? That's what I'm going to need to be. Invincible." he explained, recalling how he had told Izuku about his new reasoning when he was discharged from the hospital.
The expressions of the class brightened at his explanation, Kirishima gripped his desk and looked away in self shame, "Damnit that is manly as hell!" he admitted with envy.
Midnight clasped her hands together with a large supportive smile, "I love it! Very confident, but not too much so." she said with pride in her voice, making Mako's cheeks flush in embarrassment from the praise of his teacher.
"Thanks…..plus I don't want to change my costume." he admitted.
Kaminari titlted his head, "What do you mean?" he asked.
Mako blinked, "Wait….did you…..wait did anyone notice that my costume has a giant yellow 'I' on the front of it?" he asked. The entire class seemed to pause for a moment, realization dawning on all of them, save for Izuku whom already knew about the design choice from both Mako and Melissa.
"OOooooooh! That's cool! I like that!" Sero exclaimed.
Aoyama nodded, "Your branding is very well done Mako. Parfait." he praised with his accent. Mako grinned to himself humorously at his classmate's reaction. As Mako took his seat, Aoyama walked up behind the podium and took his place, holding his whiteboard down in anticipation for a reveal he flipped it up over his head, "The Shining Hero: "I cannot stop twinkiling!" "
"….." Mako and the rest of the class didn't think a hero name should be an entire sentence.
"It'll be catcher if you replace the 'cannot' with 'can't'." Midnight said as she took the board from the student and made the adjustments, shocking the rest of the class.
SHE'S OK WITH IT? was the collective confusion.
Mina stood up next with beaming excitement, "I'm next!" she said before trotting up to the desk and putting her name down, "Call me Alien Queen!" she said with enthusiasm.
Midnight gave the student a puterubed look, "From that horror movie franchise? The one that bleeds acid? That's terrible!" she said as she shook in apparent fear. Mina's mood deflated as she walked back to her seat beside Mako.
The teen leaned over, "Ok but seriously, why alien queen?" he asked.
She turned to him and pouted, "I don't know! I mean I look like an alien right?" she asked, gesturing with her hands to her head, with her dark irises, pink skin and hair, and the pair of horns she had poking out of her head, she may not had looked like the traditional human. But that noun was…..varied in today's world.
Mako gave her a look, "Mina. I'm an alien." he reminded her.
The excitement she had died down, "…..oh yeah. I kinda forgot." she admitted with a sheepish grin.
"I mean I've met another alien, but he wasn't like monstrous or anything. He was just a big dude. He had three fingers, and one eye. But I mean-" he said as he recalled Allen the Alien.
"WAIT! YOU'VE MET ALIENS!?" Mina shrieked, making the whole class turn to the two.
Mako pointed to himself, "I'm an alien for-oh forget it." he said with exasperation.
"What was he like?!" Mina asked in fascination.
"He was a good dude, really chill.…huh, wonder what he's doing now?" Mako pondered as he looked up at the ceiling.
(Meanwhile in deep space)
Allen the Alien had stopped drinking his romedian soup as something tickled the inside of his nose. Reeling his head back, he gasped, "ACHOOO!" he sneezed, grabbing a tissue from the countertop he groaned to himself. "This is what I get for trying to take a shortcut back to the Coalition of Planets headquarters by passing through that gas giant." he said to himself as he wiped his nose, the alien squid-like creature that tended the space diner that he had stopped at for both dinner and to get some fresh air.
Allen took another spoonful of his soup, the purple liquid with black squishy meat floating in it tasting warm and sweet, "Ahh, that hits the spot. That'll give me enough fuel to get back to Talescara." he said to himself as he patted his stomach. On the way back from his last trip from Earth he was lucky enough to find comm buoy for him to directly connect to the Coalition of Planets and explain exactly where he had been going for so long.
And then immediately doubled back to tell Mako the news, which led to a long explanation of what exactly was going on with his end. But it was worth it, if there were Viltrumites who were abandoning their posts like Mako's father way? Then they could have a advantage, what if the race of people didn't want to fight to begin with? Or there was a splinter group? There was untold possibilities, and he needed to get back home as soon as he could! "Hey can I get a thermos for this to go?" Allen asked the cook who nodded.
(Back on Earth)
"King Explosion Murder." Bakugo said menacingly as he held up the dry erase board with his preposed hero name on it. The entire class gave him a dry look while Midnight shook her head, "What do you mean?! It's perfect!"
"It's too violent. Try again." Midnight said.
The blonde student grumbled as he went back to his seat and the drawing board, so far the names for the class had been fairly easy to come up with. Tsuyu went with Froppy, Tokoyami went with Tsukoyomi, Shoji had Tentacole, Mineta had Grape Rush, and Shoto…..well, he just went with his name which Mako didn't see a problem with. I mean Britt's name is Britt, that's the most creative but it's catchy in it's own way. he thought as he looked over to Iida, whom was looking down at his desk with a focused look. He had expected Iida to maybe take up his brother's name, but he could understand why he wouldn't given how recent his older brother's injury was.
Mako recognized the expression that Iida's face carried; it was the same one he had on his first day back to school after his own recovery. He could barely focus on class that day, all that was on his mind was what happened…..and he saw the same thing in Iida's eyes, but there was something else he recognized…..anger. I mean no shit, if it were me? I'd…..god I don't even know what I'd do…..maybe I can ask if Cecil knows anything about him? he asked himself. From what he heard about the hero killer, which was admittedly little, he had some type of quirk that could immobilize people.
But with Mako's strength and invulnerability that might not even be an issue. Be nice to have a win after the whole Muller thing. he thought, a lump forming in the back of his throat which he swallowed down. He was going to speak to Midnight about it at their next meeting, he felt better than he did before but it still weighed on him.
Mako was drawn out of his inner thoughts when Izuku stood up from his desk and walked to the podium, a small smirk crossed his face. He knew that when they were younger Izuku would make up hero names for himself when they played together. All of them were, unsurprisingly, based around All Might's name. Mighty Man, All Might Jr. Super All Might, god if it's any of those I'm going to bust a gut. Mako thought in amusement.
The smirk vanished from his face when Izuku set his board down with his name on it.
Deku.
…..
DEKU?
"Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…." Mako drawled out in bafflement.
Kirishima tilted his head unsurely as well, "Are you sure about that man? I mean that might be your hero name forever." he asked.
Mako nodded in agreement, and Izuku looked down at the board with an understanding look, "Yeah I always hated it growing up but…..someone helped me see it in a new light." he said with a smile, Mako noticed he glanced over to Uraraka who didn't seem to notice. "It took me by surprise, but….it made me happy." he said as a somewhat nervous smile crossed his face, "This is my name, Deku. The hero who gives it his all."
Mako slowly smiled at his friend's reasoning, as he walked back over to his seat, Izuku looked over at him out the corner of his eye and saw Mako smile at him and give him a thumbs up.
"Lord Explosion Murder!" Bakugo tried again.
"Nope. Still too violent." Midnight replied.
After class ended for the day, Mako was surprised to find a list on his desk of pro heroes interested in having him for field training, "I'm not going to lie, I'm surprised that anyone wanted me to begin with." he admitted as he looked over the list of names, Uraraka peering over his shoulder. There were ten names on the list, six of them he never heard of, but the other four he had knowledge of in passing from Izuku. First and foremost was the flying hero Hawks, he was within the top ten hero rankings for Japan, another was the pro hero Crust, Mako knew him from their brief meeting on I-Island all those months ago.
Then there was one from someone named Slidin' Go, who Mako only knew that hero, he was a nice guy, and got a decent amount of community work done, but he was mostly because of the dozen memes of him on the internet of showing him sliding off into the distance. That one where he slides off earth and into space still gets me. Mako thought with amusement as he looked down at the final name, his eyes widening at who he saw gave him the offer, WHAT? They want me to intern with them? Hmmm….this might be a really good choice actually….I'll have to talk with Cecil about it though. he thought as he looked over to Izuku. Before he could speak however he noticed something…..off, about his friend. "Uhhh…..dude are you shaking?" he asked, noticing that his green haired friend was trembling in his seat.
Izuku perked up and looked down at his seat, "Oh! I'm practicing my air chair." he explained.
Mako blinked, "Wait, you mean this whole time you've been holding yourself up?!" he barked out.
Izuku nodded proudly, "Yeah! It's a great way to exercise for my core and legs." he explained.
Mako looked down at his own seat, "…..wait a second." he said, pushing his hair out from behind him and crossing his legs as he hovered in the air.
Izuku's eyes widened in recognition, "OH! I get it! Your using the same principal but with your flight powers to exercise too!" he realized as Mako's face scrunched up as he tried to keep himself perfectly still and didn't float up and down, he didn't really need to concern himself with such precision usually, adding an extra layer of challenge to it.
"Yeah I just….need to…..steady…..steeaaaddyyyy." he drawled out as he lowered his feet so they were just above the floor.
The others in the class watched the spectacle as Mako tried to steady himself, Mineta being closest to the ground watching Mako's elevation intently, "Your stills shaking dude! You gotta stop!" he said.
Mako rolled his eyes, "You know that's about as helpful as telling you not to start drooling when you see a girl." he dryly replied, earning some snickers from Mina and some of the boys.
Mineta guffawed, "Hey! I don't drool over the girls whenever I see them! It's only when I see them doing something sexy!" he defended.
Mako looked over at Uraraka who shared in his dry look, "Which is all the time." he said as he sighed, his feet touching the ground and stopping for now. "I'm going to need to practice that." he said as Izuku got up from his seat. "So….Deku, huh?" he asked, the new hero name feeling somewhat wrong as it left Mako's mouth.
The green haired teen's face reddened in embarrassment, "Y-Yeah….."
Mako patted him on the shoulder, "Way to own it." he said, casting a glance over at Uraraka as she talked with Tsuyu about something, Izuku noticed his friend's gaze shift and followed it, when he saw Uraraka his face turned red as his shoes and snapped away.
"I….well….y-yes-I mean no! I didn't-well yes she's the one who gave me the idea but-" he sputtered out in embarrassment as Mako and he walked towards the door of the classroom door. Mako tittered at his friend's reaction to his teasing, as far as he knew Midoriya didn't have as big an interest in girls but given how focused he was on his studies that didn't surprise him very much.
Then again, no girl has made him react like Uraraka has. he thought in amusement as he opened the door.
A large figure slid in front og them, "AH HA! I Am here in this totally normal pose!" All Might announced as Mako reeled his fist back to attack whatever startled him. The Symbol of peace noticed the other student's reaction and gulped, "Ah….right, sorry Young Mako!"
Mako lowered his hand, "All Might I-" he took a breath, "-don't….please?" he asked, exasperatedly. He swore every time he met up with All Might he managed to scare the hell out of him.
All Might turned to Izuku, "Right, anyway, Midoriya, may I speak with you for a moment? It's regarding your internship offers." he said.
Mako's eyes widened as he smiled, "No way he got one! Way to go man!" he said, slapping his friend on the back.
"I-wait, how'd you know?" he asked in confusion.
Izuku rubbed the back of his head, "Well I didn't get me so if your want to talk to me about it that must have changed right?" he asked.
All Might's head lowered, "…..I wanted to surprise you."
Mako and Izuku each recoiled at what they've done upon seeing the saddened expression that the symbol of peace now had. "Uhhhh….anyway I'll meet you outside, I got to call Cecil to make sure I'm ok to do any internships." he said, quickly floating away and leaving Izuku to deal with a sad All Might. He could hear Izuku trying to assure All Might that he was in fact surprised by the news.
'Internships? Do you really need to do that?' Cecil asked as Mako held his hand up to his ear to speak into his comm. 'I mean hell kid your working for the GDA and we're paying you for it.'
"Yeah and I apricate that Cecil but I mean…I'm more than just an government superhero. I want to help people. Doesn't matter the scale. Besides I haven't exactly learned much while working for you, I just go somewhere, beat someone up, rinse, repeat. There's other parts of being a hero." he reasoned. If anything, his classes at U.A. had shown him that there's much more to being a hero than punch bad guys.
He heard Cecil hum on the other end of the line, "Alright I see your point. These start next week right? I may have something for you between now and then, but if you do that? I'll clear your schedule. Fair?' Cecil offered.
Mako pressed his lips together, "Well what is it? I mean I still got school-"
'I'll handle the school, in fact It involves one of your teachers. Thirteen. I'll work something out, have her bring your schoolwork with you two or something.' he said.
Mako was now more intrigued about whatever this mission was than the prospect of his mission was, "Alright Cecil if I don't miss any schoolwork and can do my internship? Deal." he agreed.
'Alright, I'll need another day or two to get things set up, I'll contact you when I have details. Cecil out.' the GDA director said as Izuku walked out through the front of the school, Mako pressing off from the wall he was leaning on to join his friend on the trek home.
"So what'd All Might want to talk about?" he asked.
Izuku twitched nervously before looking away, "O-Oh! Well yeah, there's an….offer for me…an internship with Gran Torino." he said. Mako tilted his head curiously, racking his brain to try and remember if he had heard of that hero before. It sounded more like an old movie or something, "All Might was uhh…..kind of…scared of him."
Mako stopped dead in his tracks, "I'm sorry, what?" he asked. "All Might? Scared of this guy?" he asked. Izuku's lips were sealed tight but nodded quickly. "….you're sure?" he asked.
Izuku clicked his teeth together, "He was shaking Mako…..like I do!" he emphasized.
Mako swallowed thickly, his head reeling back slightly, All Might fought his dad without hesitation, who or what on Earth could scare him? He then noticed a high-pitched whine leak out of Izuku's mouth, he lifted his hand up, "Look maybe….maybe it won't be that bad? I mean look what's the worst that could happen?" he asked.
Izuku's head dropped, Mako rubbing the back of his head as his friend sighed and looked up at him with an appreciative expression, "Thanks Mako….but I'm not going to fall behind because I'm scared." he said with determination as he clenched his fist, Mako looked at the hand extended out slightly towards him, due to the injuries at the sports festival, his right hand had a number of scars on it from the self inflicted damage he had done.
Mako stared at the hand for a moment before looking up to Izuku's face with a smirk, "Well then if you're going to this internship, how about we get you up to snuff?" he asked. Izuku tilted his head to the side curiously at his friend's wording.
"Man this place is gorgeous; you know if you ever get tired of the whole Hero profession? You'd make a pretty good cleanup crew." Mako joked as he looked out over the water of Dagobah Beach. Mako had told Izuku to run home for a change of clothes and meet him at the beach. The rain had stopped halfway through the school day so the sand was still somewhat soggy, but Mako avoided that by simply floating just above the ground.
Izuku walked over with a sheepish grin, "Thanks, but I don't think I'd get a lot of work." he said gratefully before turning to his friend. "So why did you want to meet me here?" he asked.
Mako turned his head over to look at him before turning back away, "Back in your fight against Todoroki, you banged up your arms pretty bad." he stated. Izuku's eyes looked down but nodded before looking back up at him as he turned to him. "Izuku I know your hearts in all of this, but….man you can't keep breaking your arms." he said plainly with a small laugh to his voice.
Izuku rolled his eyes with a small smile, "I know, Recovery Girl told me as much…..I think I've made progress though, I think I can use up to about 5% of my power without hurting myself." he said.
Mako tilted his head, "Seriously? How do you figure?" he asked.
"Well given my daily workouts and diet, coupled with the fact that I've been using my quirk more, my body must have become acclimated to it. Butit'sjustfivepercentsoit'snotmuchhoweverifIkeepthisupthen-" he began to mutter before Mako snapped his hand, drawing him out of it. "Basically I can use a small fraction of my power without hurting myself." he boiled down.
Mako nodded, "Alright then, show me." he said.
Izuku blinked at him, "R-Right!" he said as he raised his fist and channeled a controlled portion of his power into it. Mako watched as it faintly glowed with power, sparks of green electricity sparking off his skin, Mako watched the power intensely, "It's still kind of new to me, it's hard to concentrate on a specific part of my body, but with practice-"
"Then don't." Mako replied simply, taking Izuku off guard.
"What?" he asked.
Mako shook his head, "Don't focus on a single part of your body. When I fly, I have to use my entire body to do it. It's how my power works but the more I thought about it? The more sense it makes, same with my super strength and invincibility. It's not something that I can focus onto one part of my body." he explained as he looked down at his feet floating off the ground. Izuku looked down as well, looking his friend over as his words sunk in, "Am I making sense or….?" he trailed off.
Izuku shook his head, his eyes lost in thought, "No you are…..I always compared my powers to being like an egg in a microwave, but all this time I've had that egg be stationary!" he realized. "Instead of distributing the power across my whole body, I've been focusing it on just my limbs!" he realized as a beaming smile crossed his face. He widened his stance and bent his knees, letting his power wash over him, his entire body briefly glowed with red streaks beneath the surface of the skin before light emitted from him with green sparks shooting off him!
Mako grinned as Izuku looked up to him triumphantly, "So….how's it feel?" he asked.
Izuku stiffly stood up, "It's….weird, it doesn't hurt but everything is tense." he tried explaining as he looked down at himself.
Mako nodded understandably, "Alright then….let's start out with basic stuff, walk around, run a little? Get your body used to it." he instructed, recalling his own lessons from his father when he was learning how to fly correctly. Izuku nodded and took a few steps, his movements across the wet sand were stiff but each step made the sand ripple beneath his feet. Mako watched him as he walked around the beach until he began to relax his movements more, then he began to run. His speed was instantly different than before, Mako flew after his friend who was running maybe about as fast as a bike, "Well look at that! Progress already!"
Izuku looked over and smiled at him, "I can't believe it! I've never been this fast before!" he said before transferring into a full sprint, kicking up a plume of sand behind him at Mako, the teen shook the debris off him and smiled at his friend running off in the distance. Tittering to himself he shot across the beach after his friend, catching up to him with ease. "Alright! Since we got the basics of movements down, try jumping!" he said. Before he could add the stipulation that he would catch him if he was falling out of control, Izuku bounded up into the air a solid two stories!
And right towards one of the trees separating the beach from the road, "OH CRAP!" Izuku cried out as he fell down towards the tree.
Mako winced at the sound of snapping branches, He watched as his green haired friend fell through the top of the tree and out the bottom, landing on his side. As he flew over, Izuku to his credit scrambled back onto his feet like nothing had happened, a broad smile beaming across his face, "That was amazing!" he said excitedly as Mako landed in front of him.
"I mean aside from the landing? Yeah. But that takes practice. Lots of practice." He said, recalling all the crash landings he had done when he first began flying.
"Mako I can't thank you enough for this! I'll keep working on this until my Internship, I can't wait for it now!" he said excitedly. The green haired teen's power flowed through him once again. Dashing away from the tree he once again launched himself up into the air, the sparks trailing behind the inheritor as he reached the top of his arc an began to fall, spreading his legs out he braced for impact on the sand.
Mako smiled as his friend leapt around, slowly getting used to the feeling of his power coursing through his veins. Nostalgia of him exploring his own powers coming to mind with a bitter tinge as the memories containing his father surfaced, now having a much more dire context to them. As Izuku slid to a halt across the snad, making a pile of it form from bracing against it while his slid, he stood upright and turned to Mako beaming. "This is great! I can't believe it took me so long to figure this out!"
Mako clapped his hands and rubbed them together, "Alright then, since you think you got movement down. How about we move on to something a little more advanced?" Mako suggested as he hovered over. Izuku tilted his head curiously, "Your my friend Izuku so know when I say this, it's not personal….you don't know how to fight."
"That's...fair, actually." Izuku began in outcry, however upon reflection he couldn't exactly argue with him.
Mako smirked, "Dude it's fine, I didn't know how to fight either. Hell I still need to learn stuff. But the best way to learn is by experience…..so I want you punch me in the face." he said, gesturing to his head with his hand.
Izuku balked at him, "WHAT?!"
"Punch me in the face with your power." Mako explained.
Izuku looked down at his hands unsurely, "Mako I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with that." he admitted, an uncomfortable expression crossing his friend's face as he looked at him.
Mako was about to dismiss his concern when he saw Izuku's eyes lower sadly, "Um….look I won't take it personal or anything, it's just training. I've punched Kirishima in the face a couple of times when we spared, no hard feelings." he assured, trying to reassure Izuku that some training wasn't that big a deal.
Midoriya shook his head, "No it's just….." he looked off to the side, the glow of his power fading as he relaxed. "Back in the Tournament….when I was fighting Shinso, he got me to speak-"
"Seriously how?" Mako asked with a deadpanned expression.
Izuku shot him a serious look in his eyes, making the teen's joking expression shift, "He said…..he said that he was surprised that they didn't put you down like a dog." Mako winced at how much of a deep cut that felt like, "He also said that maybe one day I'll have to do it."
"Damn." Mako hissed out.
Izuku looked up at him, "Oh he apologized for it after the match! He just needed to say something to get me to react and…..well…."
Mako blinked at him, "Wait, you don't think I'm gonna like, turn evil or something are you?" he asked.
Izuku jumped in place, "What!? No! Never!"
Mako rolled his eyes, "Ok then what is it?" he asked.
"I just…..It got me mad because you've been through so much and…." he said, his hands clenching into fists. "It's stupid! I mean you didn't do anything and-and your being treated like a villain! And I don't….I don't want to pretend your one for training." he said, his anger subsiding quickly as it appeared. However the shock was already done, Mako had never once seen Izuku loose his composure like that, even after all the years of bullying that Bakugo subjected them to, he never once got angry.
But then again, this wasn't the same thing.
He took a deep breath as he rubbed the back of his head, "Izuku I'm glad you got my back and all but it's just training…and I appreciate the concern…seriously man." he said gratefully. Looking over beach, he saw a bench nearby, "Tell you what, instead of sparring, how about we just relax for a minute?" he offered.
Izuku smiled a little and nodded, the two friends walking over to the bench and sitting down, the green haired teen sinking further into the seat. "Ugh….I'm going to be sore tomorrow aren't I?" he asked.
Mako smirked, "Probably, yeah." he agreed. "So…Deku."
Izuku groaned, "Please stop."
Mako gave him a knowing smile, "You like her, don't you?" he asked bluntly.
Izuku's face turned red as his shoes, "WHAT?! NONONONONO! It's not like that! I mean yesthereasonIcameupwithDekuasmynameisbecauseofUrarakaand-" he began before Mako once again snapped his fingers.
"Dude, come on it's me. You can tell me anything." he assured his friend. Izuku looked over at him, his face still flushed red with embarrassment, Mako nodded at him to continue, Izuku had known Mako almost his entire life, there was no doubt in his mind that he could trust his best friend….but that didn't mean he wasn't keeping secrets from him…..
"I mean I think she's amazing, but….." he trailed off sadly.
"But?" Mako pressed.
Izuku sighed, "Why would anyone ever be interested in me?" he asked bluntly, there wasn't an ounce of self deprecation in his voice, he genuinely didn't understand what anyone could find appealing about him. Mako stared at him for a moment before slugging his arm, "Ow! What was that for?"
"For being stupid. Look, it's not about what you see about, it's about….what she sees in you. I mean Melissa says stuff that I never really thought about myself as, and she's surprised whenever I tell her how inspiring she is." he explained, Midoriya tilting his head curiously at his explanation.
The green haired teen's face turned a little red, "Well I do think she's really dedicated; I mean she's going to U.A. just so that she can support her parents." a small smile graced his lips, "And you know she really cares about them." he said, recalling the phone call he heard from Uraraka to her parents after her match with Bakugo. He shook his head, "But I don't think she sees me that way anyway, she's really focused on her path of being a hero" he explained.
Mako shrugged, "Maybe, but still man if I of all people can find someone? You can too." he said encouragingly. "Speaking of whom, I'm going to go and test out the workout machine they designed for me." he said, standing up from the bench and stretching his arms above his head.
Izuku grinned, "Let me know how that turns out. And….thanks for this Mako….it's been a while since we just…."
"Chilled out?" he provided, thinking back upon it he couldn't really remember the last time the two of them just hung out together. "Yeah…..we should do this more often. Just hang out, outside of school like we used too."
Izuku smiled at the fond memories, "It has been a while since you went to the comic bookstore." he pointed out.
"True but I don't want to be banned from the comic bookstore if I show my face there." Mako provided. Izuku rolled his eyes, "But I did hear the one I went to has a new All Might Figure-"
"Let's go!" Izuku exclaimed, Mako snickering as his friend suddenly flushed with embarrassment from his outburst.
"Never change dude. Never change." Mako said, patting his friend on the shoulder before lifting up off into the air and shooting off to the East.
Melissa watched intently as Mako pushed up on the massive machine that was using magnetic fields to press down onto him. "Hnnnggh! Well it's certainly heavy." Mako said as his arms coiled, Melissa let out a hum as she watched him, her hand supporting the side of her face as she intently watched her boyfriend work out. "You said this was at what? A hundred and fifty tons? Feels like-Errrr-more." Mako grunted as he pushed up. Melissa nodded, "Maybe it's like a mental thing as well? I mean-hnngggg-my dad could lift a plane but he wasn't like Godzillo sized." he grunted out.
Melissa kept nodding, "Uh huh." she said as Mako lifted the bar he was benching up into it's safety position before sitting up, Mako was wearing the bottom portion of his costume, not wanting to get his regular clothes sweaty…..which Melissa understood completely now. …..I love superheroes. she thought, watching as Mako's chest inhaled and exhaled. Showing off the developing muscles that he had been working on from his training…and his arms which Melissa to her own surprise seemed not to have noticed before were very…..very toned.
She looked up at the massive plate that was supported by the bars that Mako was lifting up, it was about the size of a city bus in length and was just as thick, connected to a large machine above it with cables that produced their own magnetic charge to push down against Mako. As her boyfriend sat up, she noticed that Mako was panting and sweating a little, but was smiling, Oh….oh god that's…..that's something that's….kind of hot. she thought to herself, feeling her face become a little flush as she walked over with a towel.
Presenting the cloth to him, he smiled, "Thanks." he said as he took it and dried himself off, "This thing will totally work, I can hop on this thing a couple times a week, I'll definitely get stronger." he said as he set the towel down on the bench, stretching his arms out in front of him, and giving Melissa a clear view of his bicep, shoulder, and back.
Watching him….do this…..multiple times a week… Melissa thought to herself as she swallowed thickly, This is my greatest invention ever! she thought to herself as her face became a tinge more red.
"Melissa? You ok?" he asked, "You look a little red." he asked.
She shook her head and fought down her blush, "Oh your fine-I'm fine! Fine…..really fine." she corrected herself.
Mako watched her for a moment before shrugging off her reaction and walking over to the chair he had draped the upper part of his costume over, "So Cecil has some big mission planned for me for the next week or something." he began. Melissa tiltied her head curiously as he turned to look at her, "I just wanted to tell you that I won't be around for a little while, and I don't want to worry you if I don't show up." he explained, making the blonde smile at him sweetly.
Stepping forward to him, she leaned in and pressed her lips onto his for a brief kiss, "Thank you, I apricate it. But I don't exactly worry about you every time I don't hear from you for a while. I mean your not exactly easy to hurt." she said, knocking the back of her fist against his chest.
Mako smirked as he looked at the space between them, "I know I just want you to know. My dad….well honesty is important to me is all." he admitted. Melissa's hand reached into his own, lifting it up between them she looked into his eyes and smiled.
"I understand." she told him, Mako looked back into them and found himself leaning forward as she was, their eyes closed as their lips-
"Mako? Are you still here by chance?" David's voice said, making the couple's eyes shoot open and break apart a respectable distance.
Melissa glared towards the door to her lab, "He's right here dad." she grumbled out in frustration, Mako hissing through his teeth at the tone her voice had as her father entered the lab.
"How's the machine work?" he asked.
Mako raised his arm beside Melissa and flexed it, "Feels great, like I'm actually pushing myself. Thank you both so much for making it." he said, missing that Melissa was watching the arm he was tensing, her frustration at her father forgotten.
David smiled and nodded, "Glad to hear it, do you have a moment to talk regarding…" he glanced at his daughter sadly, "The….incident that happened?" he asked.
Mako's smile dropped and was replaced with a serious look, Melissa crossed her arms over her chest, "Papa, I'm not some little girl. I can hear this too." she insisted.
David opened his mouth to speak but sighed instead, "I know it's just….Cecil just contacted me about what they found out about Tobias." he explained. "From what their studies have shown, the body was for all intent an purposes deceased. There was no brain activity, no blood flow, and some sort of computer-brain interface inserted into his head." he explained.
Melissa grimly swallowed but David continued, "What's fascinating is that the part that was planted in his head was controlling the body, it was connected to his nervous system and basically running the Medulla part of his brain. while acting as the frontal cortex." he explained.
Melissa saw the confusion on her boyfriend's face and explained, 'The Frontal Cortex is what is out higher brain function, the Medulla is more of our more basic functions. Fight or Flight for example." she said.
"Wait, so if it was acting as the Cortex, then someone was controlling it?" he asked, his assumption was that the cyborg zombie…thing, was some sort of mindless drone. "But wait if it was being controlled, couldn't you like, trace where it's coming from and find out who did this?" he asked unsurely.
David shook his head, "We attempted to, but it appears that the machine that was intended to control it was faulty, it was acting on it's basic instincts when you fought it."
Melissa cupped her chin with her hand, "Wait if it was just on it's basic instincts…the building it broke out of was the R&D lab right? So maybe whosever made it, made it somewhere around there?" she posited.
David nodded, "Precisely, I have security on standby for a sweep tonight and…..well Mako you already dealt with the first one, but if there are more of these things, I'd feel better if you were there as backup." he explained to the Viltrumte.
"You got it." Mako agreed, "I'm not just going to sit by while someone plays Frankenstein on some innocents." he declared, reaching into his pocket on the back of his suit and pulling out his gloves and Mask.
David smiled at him in gratitude before turning to his daughter, "Honey, I'd like you to stay at the student dorms tonight just to be safe."
Melissa nodded in understanding, "Alright Papa." she agreed before turning to Mako as he pulled his mask down over his head and pulled him into a brief kiss, pulling away the young woman adjusted her glasses, "Be safe." she asked him.
Mako grinned, "Weren't we just talking about how you don't need to worry about me since I'm so strong?" he asked playfully.
Melissa's lip twitched, "Yeah we were." she answered as he gave her hand a gentle squeeze before following David out of the lab. As the door closed, Melissa sighed as she began to power down all the equipment in the room, it wasn't safe to leave a giant electromagnet on after all.
She wasn't lying when she told Mako she didn't usually have to worry for his safety, but that wasn't what concerned her. She still remembered how Mako looked once he came to see her after the fight with his father, while whatever physical injuries he had were healed, she never forgot the look of utter devastation his eyes held. And while it wasn't as bad, she recognized the same look at the Sports Festival after his return from his job.
She still worried about him, just not like most people would.
I'll do whatever I can do to support him…..because I never want to see him like that again. she thought as she hit the lights to the lab.
She arrived at the student dorms within the hour, walking through the lobby she looked over at the elevator and sighed to herself as she walked over to the other person waiting for it. "Shield." D.A. Sinclair greeted curtly.
"Evening Sinclair, what's got you up this late?" she asked, deciding to try and be civil with the pompous other student.
He gave a tired sigh, "Working on interfaces to handle brainwaves. You?"
"Electromagnetic fields. My boyfriend has super strength so I needed to-" she began to explain.
"-Use them to weigh down on him." he finished for her with a roll of his eyes, "Shield you have a admittedly bright mind but I don't see why you focus it on the things you do." he said.
Melissa tried to not bite on the inside of her cheek, "Because I like him." she replied through gritted teeth as the elevator opened. Can I really be rude enough to say 'I'll take the next one'? she considered before stepping inside with Sinclair.
"Surprised to see you here to be honest, don't you usually stay with your father?" he asked.
Melissa sighed as the elevator doors closed, "There's a….well there's an investigation going on tonight. Into whoever turned Toby into that monster." she said, not noticing that Sinclair stiffened at the mention of the 'monster'. "Hopefully they find whoever did this and put an end to it." she said as the elevator opened. As Melissa stepped out, a white cloth covered her mouth!
The blonde's eyes widened as she felt one of her arms pinned behind her, fear took over and she did what her first instinct was and threw her head back at her attacker! She could hear something crunch as she screamed into the muffling cloth, her body slowly starting to grow tired as her eyes fluttered to keep themselves open.
"UgH! Well I wouldn't count on it." Sinclair said in frustration as Melissa lost consciousness.
AN: Sorry for the delay in this one everybody, but school has been taking up my time as well as the game that I'm animating for so I haven't had as much time to write as I usually do. Plus Elden Ring came out and I've been dying on that front a lot, as well as looking for a part time job. In other news I went to the premier of the Batman last night and it's easily now my favorite movie with the caped crusader in it.
And it's a little sad to say, but it looks like MHA is entering it's final arc of the series, while I'm sad that it's ending I can't wait to see how it wraps up!
And with that aside, let's get onto reviews:
Devil Dragon Stand Knight: I got plans for Melissa but that's not it entirely.
Dracus: Yeah I saw that trailer! I'm super excited to get back to the anime. And no I haven't.
Superpierce: Yeah there's kind of a lull right now but the action should pick up soon enough.
The CarcassKing: Thank you! Honestly I just don't want things to get too boring, I'm ready to get back into some action and trust e we're going to get that with what's coming up.
D3lph0xL0v3r: Yeah but they don't know that, plus just because Mako is fast and strong doesn't mean he'd win whatever event was selected.
abrrow899: That's something you'll have to wait and see.
Guest1: It's not intentional, I've just been busy.
Sarcasam Sage 626: Yeah Angstrom isn't a straight up villain, I mean in the comics I don't think he's even from Invincible's Universe, it's just where he decided to host the whole plan from. And yeah writing Mako and Melissa is fun!
Super Comrade: Ugh tell me about it. I mean it's useless but god is it creepy.
Maelstrom Ressurected: No I haven't, but I'll check it out.
Fanfictioner8: I mean Bakugo learned that lesson the second day of school when izuku, the one he looked down on the most, won against him. He already knows that he shouldn't do that, but also I don't think Mako would make that comparison because he still does love his father in spite of what he's done.
Yea-Yah: I mean I get wanting to have an interaction with them, but I think it'll have to be in a way that makes sense. Because as soon as Mako arrives, with his speed and strength the fight is over. He'd put stain down before he could even take a hostage.
As for the crush thing, I haven't really thought of it, I mean its not until after the Sports Festival that the class actually gets to know one another better.
Roshane: I mean viltrumites are invincible TO A DEGREE. And that even varies depending on the person. I mean Mark is weaker than his father, but there's stronger viltrumites than both of them. And Invincible is more about how inspite of whatever Mark goes through, he continues to be a hero and fight on. That's what makes him Invincible.
Guest 1: No these aren't scheduled or anything, I've just been busy with school and looking for a part time job/internship.
MEALSO: I actually had planned about doing what's coming up for the internship, but upon re-reading the chapters I saw that there was a week or so between the name selection and the internships. So I can have my cake and eat it too.
As for the kid thing…well….you'll see.
Yo: Yup, I think that's the maximum amount of time.
