AN: This story is being completely re-written from this point onwards. This is a story that I have come back to time and time again to try to finish, but I only recently realized that I would not be able to finish this story as it was written. I've changed a lot since I started writing this story in 2005. I decided a re-write would be best to give all of you the completion/end to this story. There are a couple of key changes- namely TK is now called Ollie and some drama that never came in to the first writing. I hope you enjoy where this story is going to go now! There will be an update every Sunday with the newest chapter.
Safe Travels
"Mom! Moooooooom!" a boy yelled as he skipped ahead of her as they walked through the airport. Jason's letter hadn't sat right with her and she decided it was time to at least make a visit to California. With it being summer, Ollie was off from school and this was the time to come out if they were going to. She just hoped that Jason would respect the one thing she asked for- time to talk with Tommy about this on her own terms. "C'mon- you're going to miss the plane!"
"That's the point," Kim muttered under her breath before she plastered a smile on her face and followed after her son. While she had decided to go to California, she was having all kinds of second thoughts about it. Tommy didn't know they had a child and she knew that Tommy wasn't likely to take that too well. It would be one thing if Ollie had been two, but he was nearly eight and there was no denying who his father was. Anyone who saw even one picture of Tommy knew that he was his son. "Jason- you better know what you're doing."
"Tommy- can you do me a huge favor?" Jason asked as he looked around his dojo. The recent rains had flooded several areas of town and his dojo happened to be in the very middle of one of the hardest hit areas. He was just able to get back into the building today and saw all of the work that was ahead of him. He had meant to go pick Kimberly and Ollie up from the airport, but that was not going to happen now. The rest of the rangers were also affected by the flood, except for Tommy. Since he lived in Reefside, he hadn't had anything more than some bad rain.
"Sure- is there something else you need me to bring along?" Tommy asked as he looked back at the trailer where he had thrown together some spare dojo supplies and various tools he had from his place. They knew that most of Jason's gym was going to be a loss, but this was something he could do to get them through the next few weeks as insurance fought over what they would replace.
"Actually, there's someone I need you to pick up. I thought I'd be able to get in here earlier and then get over to the airport but…" Jason trailed off as he stared ahead of him. He was going to have to tell Tommy who he was picking up and that might derail every plan that they had laid to get them back together. The plan had been for them to meet on neutral ground, at the dojo, but that had been shot to hell. "It's Kimberly and her son."
Tommy dropped his phone as he let out a string of curses. He could not believe that she was going to be in town and he especially couldn't believe that he was going to see her. Every other time she had visited, he had been able to avoid it. That settled in as he realized the other person he was picking up. Her son. As much as he wanted to turn around and go back to Reefside, he couldn't do that now.
"You're shitting me, right?" Tommy recovered as he fished his phone up from the floor of his jeep and put it in a cup holder.
"You weren't supposed to find out like this. Look- the adjuster is coming in the next thirty minutes and her plane lands about an hour from now. There is zero way I can make it. I'll owe you," Jason said as Tommy shook his head and let out a long sigh. He was going to do this, but it just might tear him to pieces. "Thanks man- for everything."
"You better text her and warn her. I don't think she's going to want to see me anymore than I want to see her," Tommy muttered as he hung up and he let out a groan. He was sure that this was not going to be pleasant for either of them. And who was the father of her son?
"Uncle Jason said he would meet us at baggage claim- so keep an eye out for him," Kim said as she hiked her backpack up on her shoulders and looked around the airport. She hadn't flown into this airport, on purpose, for more than a decade. Memories flooded through her and she was glad that Ollie was old enough to follow along next to her without running off. She was not going to be fully with him for the next little bit. So much had changed, but there was so much that was exactly the same. They walked past the gate that she had flown out of and a memory of Tommy giving her a kiss goodbye assaulted her. This week was going to be nearly impossible.
"Mom, you okay?" Ollie asked as Kimberly looked over at him and just nodded. She didn't trust herself to talk and she knew that her son could read her far too easily. She really did not want him to do that right now.
"I'm fine, just tired," Kim lied as she let out a sigh at the sight of the baggage claim. Ollie settled next to her as she looked for their bags. She caught glimpses of various men as they walked over to their spouses and she blocked that out. She had learned to not really think much about nuclear families. She had never given Tommy a chance to decide if that was something he wanted with them and she was going to live with that choice.
"Hey- Jason kind of had a problem come up, so he sent me," a voice said and she froze. She didn't need to turn around to see who it was, she would know that voice anywhere. "And apparently he didn't text you."
"My…my phone died…" Kim trailed off as the world started to fade away and she gulped in air to try to stay conscious. The last thing she needed was to faint in front of her son, with his father standing right next to her. She was sure that Ollie would put it together if he got a good chance to look at Tommy.
"Deep breaths," Tommy muttered as he placed a hand on her back and she folded forward. Any attempt at having a calm reaction to him completely abandoned as she let him help her stay grounded and conscious. "Hi, I'm Tommy. I'm one of your mom's old friends. Let's just give her a minute to get it together."
"Tommy?" Ollie asked as Kim felt her anxiety spike again, but Tommy's hands kept her steady and she was able to focus on her breathing. This was not how she wanted them to meet, when her extremely curious child could put two and two together. "Mom."
"What's your name?" Tommy tried to distract as he felt Kim taking in more panicked breaths. Maybe if he was able to keep his tone level, Kim would calm down as well. He heard a squeak come up from Kimberly and they both stared down at her. "Kim…"
"Mom…"
"I need air," Kim stood up straight and turned to walk straight in to Tommy, who hastily steadied her. She locked eyes with him for a moment before she sprinted for the doors. Standing close to Tommy was something that she could not do right now.
"Do you have your bags?" Tommy asked as Ollie shook his head no and Tommy took a good look at him for the first time. He felt a punch to his gut as he slowly nodded. Aside from Kimberly's lighter hair, it was like looking at himself when he was a kid. He just hoped that the boy didn't study him too hard and see their similarities. "Can you point them out to me and we can grab them?"
"Sure. By the way- I'm a Tommy too," Ollie said as Tommy gulped, but gave him a friendly smile, of course his name was Tommy.
"Hey, you feeling better?" Tommy asked as Kim looked up at him and let out a shaky breath. Ollie was glued to his side and she was grateful that Tommy was being an adult about this. She was not sure she was going to be able to get in more than a couple of sentences with him without losing it. "That would be a no. C'mon- I've got some stuff that I have to drop off at the dojo and then I imagine you're staying with…"
"Jason and Trini," Kim supplied as she rose to her feet and then immediately sat back down. She might have gotten her breathing calmed down, but her body was still in full panic mode. "Tommy…"
He settled down on the bench next to her and Ollie plopped down on the other side. He watched as she alternated between complete panic and trying to hide it from her son. This was definitely not how she had imagined the two of them meeting. He wasn't even sure that she imagined the two of them meeting at all. He grabbed the hand nearest to him and she stared up at him. He might not be happy with how Jason had manipulated them, but he was not going to let her have a panic attack with no support. She leaned against him and he put an arm around her. He watched as Ollie gave her a hug from her other side and let out a sigh. Apparently he had seen his mother have a panic attack more than once.
"I'm not mad, okay?" Tommy whispered as she nodded against him and he tried to decide what else he could say without tipping off their son about who he was. It was obvious that he didn't know who he was to him and that Kim wanted to keep it that way for now. "We can really talk about this tonight."
"Talk about what?" Ollie piped in and Tommy felt her stiffen before he returned to rubbing circles on her back. He watched the wheels start turning in Ollie's mind and when the boy looked up he shook his head. He knew that Kim could not have this talk right now.
"You think you can walk now?" Tommy asked as he felt her calm and she pulled away from him enough that he could see her tear streaked face. He wanted to stay cool to her, but he had always hated to see her hurting. "Hold on."
He helped her stand up, forcing her to face away from Ollie. He saw the scarf she had tied to her bag and hastily untied it before handing it to her. She didn't seem to know what to do with it and he let out a sigh. He gently wiped away the mascara that had formed rivers down her cheeks and looked her over before giving her a small smile. He took in a deep breath and then wrapped her in a hug, angling his head for her shoulder.
"You can do this. You've done this alone for years," Tommy whispered and she just nodded against his chest. He heard another sniff and when he pulled back he recognized the determination in her gaze. "Okay onto the jeep."
AN2: I look forward to any and all feedback on this different take/changes. Are there any things you want to see in this story? Are there any parts from the original that you know you're going to miss? Let me know and I'll see what I can do to work those in.
