Fourth Rock from the Sun
[Uravity]: Is it bad that I'm jealous that Mako gets to go to space with Thirteen?
[Red Riot]: I don't think so.
[Sero]: I'm not, who wants to go to space?
[Pinky]: It'd be out of this world!
[Creati has timed out Pinky]
[Creati]: Was too harsh?
[Invincible]: No.
[Sugar Rush]: No.
[Charge Bolt]: Nah.
[Invisible Girl]: It needed to be done.
[Tail Man]: But Mako, seriously this is pretty cool. And you'll only be gone a week?
[Invincible]: Yeah apparently Robot, from the GDA, has been working on deep space engines that cut way down on travel time. Problem is that they don't have a ton of fuel so a round trip to Mars is all they can do. They want me there in case we run into anything.
[Grape Rush]: Like what?! Little green men with death lasers?!
[Deku]: Well they've observed the surface of Mars for decades now and there hasn't been any alien life ever observed as far as we can tell. That's just above ground though, some people think there could be a whole civilization below the surface of the planet.
[Invincible]: Which is why I'm going with Thirteen, if we run into anyone out there? We head straight back and report it. She's been to space before and has done a bunch of missions so she'll show me the ropes on what to do.
[Red Riot]: Wait so you can go in space, I get that, but don't you need to like…breathe?
[Invincible]: My dad said he could hold his breath for like a week, I can hold it for a few hours but Melissa is making me a helmet that has it's own oxygen supply that should last me a while.
[Uravity]: How's she doing?
[Invincible]: She's doing better, they finished sweeping I-Island and didn't find any other Reanimen, she's ok to be back here.
[Pinky]: Not that you minded the company at home right?
[Creati has timed out Pinky]
[Earphone Jack]: Mina, seriously, she'll keep doing it.
[Invincible]: I gotta go guys, launch is in a few hours. I'll see you guys in a week!
Mako closed the group chat application on his phone before pocketing it in the back of his costume, the class had all changed their usernames to match their hero names they had selected for their names in the chat. Momo had justified it as allowing them to become more familiar with associating everyone with their code names. But Mako and few others suspected it was just so that she, like most of everyone else, wanted to be called their hero names.
Looking up from his phone, he saw Melissa tinkering with the helmet and gas tank that he would be wearing for his mission, along with the mask beside her on the same table. The helmet was similar to the regulated ones that astronauts wore, only that the glass was retractable and less large, with the neck being more flexible so Mako could turn his head, the gas tank was fitted to a back piece which resembled a backpack he would wear over his shoulders with two straps.
Melissa tapped a button on the side of the helmet, the glass sliding up before she pressed it again and it slid down over the face. "Ok! I got it!" she cheered happily as she grabbed it and the mask before walking over to her boyfriend who smiled at her upbeat demeanor, "So I modified the lenses on your mask so that you won't go blind if you look at the sun." she said, handing him his mask which he pulled down over his face. He didn't see any change in his sight but took Melissa's word for the changes as she held up the backpack and helmet, "Now the helmet is really dense, but not as much as you are-"
"Hurtful but accurate." Mako joked as he took it from her gasp and looked it over.
Melissa rolled her eyes, "You know what I mean. Don't crash headfirst into things, it'll take a beating but this thing will break before you do." she cautioned. She held up the backpack, "Now this thing I'm really proud of. It'll recycle the carbon dioxide that you produce when you breath back into oxygen. However it takes an hour or so, so take deep breaths for a while and you should be ok. Just to be safe there's a standard amount of oxygen that you can breathe in here as well." she said with pride as she handed him the backpack.
Slipping it over his shoulders, he pulled the Helmet down over his head and mask while Melissa circled around him and attached the oxygen line to the helmet, "Ok take a deep breath." Melissa instructed. Mako inhaled as she said, she watched as the supply gauge on the back read how much he took in. "Now exhale." she said and watched as another gauge slightly filled up. "Alright it works!" she said cheerfully.
Mako turned around to her and tapped the button he saw her hit to make the glass slide up, "As if there was ever any doubt." he said, her blue orbs rolled at his praise for her. Mako smiled at her as his hands lifted up to gently wrap around her, "You sure your ok?" he asked, looking around her lab.
She smiled as she nodded, "I'm sure. Just needed some peace of mind." she assured him while her own hands pressed against his chest, her fingers drumming against him. "But when you get back….maybe we could do something together? Something that doesn't involve killer robots?" she asked playfully.
Mako smirked as he leaned in, "I can think of a few things." he replied before leaning forward and capturing her lips with her's, the blonde closing her eyes and humming against his lips as he move them against his own. Their kiss linger for a moment before she pulled away and smiled at him, "To be clear I was thinking we go out to a movie or something but I'm ok with just doing that." he joked.
Melissa giggled, "As much as I'd like that, you got internships when you get back."
Mako shrugged, "Yeah but I mean there's some time between when I get back and my internship, I could fly us anywhere in the world." he offered enticingly. Melissa hummed in thought playfully, "You know I've been meaning to go to that Grand Canyon in the states." he offered.
The support student rolled her eyes before leaning in and kissing him again, albeit this time just a small peck, "Date later, space travel now. You gotta go pick up Thirteen don't you?" she asked. Mako sighed and nodded as he simply looked at his girlfriend, who noticed his lingering gaze, feeling her face warm up she looked away in slight embarrassment, "What?" she asked.
"Nothing I'm just going to miss you." he said honestly.
Melissa's blush disappeared and was replaced with a heartfelt smile that etched into her face, "I'll miss you too…" she replied sweetly. "..don't break my stuff." she added, making Mako blink.
"Your stuff? I thought this was mine!" he asked, gesturing to the helmet and backpack.
Melissa giggled as she stepped out of his warm embrace, "Actually I made those last year for a class dealing with deep sea rescue. I retrofitted them for space." she explained as she walked to the window with Mako behind her. "So please don't break it." she asked.
Mako opened his mouth to reassure her…..but then remembered exactly how many times she's had to repair his costumes from the fights he's been in. "Uhm….would you accept my very sincere attempt to try and not to break it?" he asked with a grin. Melissa sighed, "I mean look we're just going to mars, getting everything unloaded for the crew to set up a station out there, and then coming back! No danger, no need to worry." he assured her.
The blonde crossed her arms, "I could take one of your comics as insurance." she 'threatened' him.
"I'll give you the last Science Dog issue as collateral. It wasn't really that good anyway, they're doing this whole thing where his twin brother is science dog now, but this was already done like decades ago, and nobody even asked for it-it's just kind of a cluster." he said, waving his hand dismissively. Melissa blinked at his small tirade, "I swear I like comics." he assured.
"Clearly." she teased before reaching over and tapping the side of his helmet so the glass slid back down, "Now you gotta get going to pick up Thirteen." she said, ushering him to the window.
"Help! My girlfriend is throwing me out the window!" Mako yelled out in laughter as Melissa tittered before giving him an actual push out the window which he floated away from. Melissa chuckling as he waved goodbye to her before flying away.
Honestly the Viltrumite was glad to see his girlfriend happy again, the events with Sinclair clearly shook her as they would have anyone, and he was somewhat worried when he had to leave for Mars so soon after it happened. But she told him that she would be okay, and that her father was tripling security on I-Island for peace of mind. Still the fact that this happened in the first place….David is probably beating himself up worse than I was. Mako thought as he coasted through the air.
Suddenly the earpiece he had went off, opening his helmet to tap it he answered, "Cecil hey, I'm on my way to pick up Thirteen." he explained.
'Delay that, we got something I need you to take care of in Russia first. Drop your gear off and deal with it, THEN go pick up Thirteen.' Cecil instructed.
Mako blinked in surprise, "Geeze is it serious?"
'Don't know, do you consider a possible Nuclear meltdown serious?' Cecil asked rhetorically as Mako rocketed through the air as fast as he could with his arms out in front of him.
Unbeknownst to the Viltrumite, Melissa wasn't the only one to watch him fly off, on the rooftop of the R&D building, David Shield watched as his daughter's boyfriend flew away. The entire ordeal with Melissa had been nerve wrecking to say the least, he was eternally grateful to Mako for being there when he was, however the possibility of if he weren't had crossed his mind more times in the past day then he cared to admit. Once Mako had left to save his daughter, he had immediately told Cecil to get All Might to I-Island to help.
However Cecil's reply had stopped him cold. 'All Might's in no condition to help right now.'
Toshinori was his oldest friend, and he knew about his…..condition. But he also knew that his friend could still maintain hero work for a few hours…..unless something happened. And the only thing that he could come up with was the battle between All Might and Nolan, that was the last big confrontation that All Might had been involved with. He could always count on Toshinori for as long as he knew him…..but if he couldn't now then if something were to happen like this again….
It doesn't need to though….and I know just how to make that happen. he thought to himself, a certain device that was locked away here on the island coming to mind.
Mako had never been to Russia before, mainly because he never saw any reason to. However as he flew across the wildlands of the expansive nation, Cecil filled him in on the developing situation. 'Supervillain by the name of Kursk, electric powered supervillain, able to absorb and produce electrical energy. Primarily operates in Russia. Energy based villains like him usually try something like this, they have a big target in mind so they decide to stock up on power so they can get the job done.' Cecil explained as Invincible flew over a empty grass field, the air from him shuffling the grass as he flew over.
'Problem is that Kursk is draining power from a power plant, if he does it right then he gets a power up, but if he screws up a power plant….well Russia isn't exactly known for it's Nuclear safety.' Cecil said dryly.
"Cecil if this is such a big deal shouldn't the Guardians be here? I mean this sounds dangerous." he asked.
'Most of them are busy but Pegasus, the Russian member of the team, is already at the scene with Le Brusier. I called you in because we need some more muscle.' Cecil said as Mako flew into the city limits where he could see smoke in the distance. As he got closer to the smoke, he saw a crack of lighting shot out from the smoke with something thrown through the sky, something that had….wings?
"Cecil I'm here, give me one second!" he said before zooming after the winged figure and catching them in midair, the figure in Invincible's arms' coughed. "Hey, I'm Invincible, you ok?" he asked.
The smoke cleared and in his arms was a young woman with blonde hair tied back in a ponytail, a pair of angle like wings protruding out from her back, she wore a green and white costume, with green around her shoulders, back, and hips with white covering everything else, in the middle of her chest was a symbol of two wings, "Da, thank you for the catch." she said, rolling out of his grasp and flapping her wings to fly.
"I'm going to guess your Pegasus?" Invincible asked jokingly before a bolt of electricity struck him in the chest! Mako hissed at the stinging sensation as he was pushed back through the air before rolling off the bolt and shooting through the air down towards it's source. On the outer ring of the Nuclear plan silo was a scrawny looking man in a yellow costume with a lightning bolt shape on top of his head and lightning bolt shaped orange eyes of his suit. "Wow you really went for the generic 'lightning bad guy' theme didn't you?" Invicible asked and he swooped up from below and uppercutted the villain off edge of the silo.
As the villain cursed at him in Russian, he suddenly shot off to the side in a bolt of lightning, over the silo and through the air as he began to reform before Pegasus flew down and tackled him through the air, dragging him down as she closed her wings, . "Ты сумасшедшая сука!" he exclaimed as he raised a hand to blast the flying Heroine off him, only for her to let go and spread her wings out as Kursk slammed into the ground hard.
Flying down to meet her, Invincible noticed a large crowd gathered at the police barracdes, "We gotta get him away from the people here!" he said to the other hero who nodded in agreement before they looked down at the electric villain who cupped his hands at the wrists and sent out a cascade of electricity at the two in the air. Pegasus flew off while Invincible raised his arms and blocked the bolts. Instead of being pushed back through the air, Invincible forced himself forward towards the Russian supervillain
Invincible looked down as a small black and white ball burst through the wall of the power pant and collided right in Kursk's chest, sending him sprawling back into a car that was knocked over onto it's side.
The black and white ball rebound off the villain and landedon all four…..paws…."WOOF!"
Invincible blinked as standing heroically in the middle of the street….was a white bulldog.
"…..What?!" Invincible barked out.
"Ah Le Bruser! Thank goodness your unharmed!" Pegasus greeted warmly as Invincible and her landed on either side of the dog.
The viltrumite blinked at the dog who looked up at him and tilted it's head, "…you know I shouldn't be surprised at this. I mean my principal some weird, mouse, bear, thing." he said as he turned his attention to the supervillain as the car was blasted towards them. Pegasus flapped her wings to fly over the car as Invincible and Le Bruser both braced and stopped the car, Mako with his hands and the dog with his head. "Ok we gotta stop him before-" he began as a bolt of lightning aimed at Pegasus hit the silo of the plant, the damage spider-webbing out until a large section fell! "Before exactly that happens!" Mako said, shooting up through the air towards the falling debris that was heading to the crowd of people below!
Mako slowed to a stop before the large piece of the silo fell into him, Remember what you learned, let the piece fall onto you, don't push against it too much or it'll fracture apart and still be a problem. he thought, remembering some of the rescue lessons he had learned at U.A. Bracing himself against the large concrete slab, he slowed it's decent to a full stop midair before shifting the weight from his shoulders to his hands which he pushed up against with.
Looking down at Kursk, he flew up and tilted the piece over onto one shoulder, Pegasus and Le Bruser saw the large shadow appear around the villain. "Ну давай же! Чего ты ждешь... о." the villain said before raising his hands and blasting apart the large piece of the debris, Invincible flying through the dust with his fist tucked back, before the villain could say anything, Invincible's fist crashed into his face and slammed him into the ground.
Pulling his fist back, the hero saw the villain was out for the count and hovered back onto his feet before looking over at Pegasus, "You ok?" he asked.
She nodded, "I am fine, Kursk is one of mine. Usually I have to find some way to douse him with water and then he's out like a light. No pun intended." she said in her accented English before looking down at Le Bruser, making her smile, "And thank you for evacuating the power plant my little friend!" she said happily, scratching the dog behind the ears.
Mako looked down at the dog, as he was about to ask if he could pet the small dog as well before a brick shattered against the side of his head, "Huh?" he asked as he turned to see the rowdy crowd chucking object towards him, "Hey what's the big idea?!" he asked, ducking under a bottle aimed at his head as the crowd yelled at him in Russian.
Pegasus raised her wing to block the projectiles, "Forgive me Invincible, but…..your father was responsible for the dissaperance of Rad Russian, our country's most prominent hero. The people are not keen on you being here. I'm sorry." she said with genuine regret.
Invincible sighed as he flew up into the sky, Pegasus grabbing Le Bruser and flying up with the bulldog in her arms after him, "It's alright, I should have realized it but it didn't cross my mind that the whole world hated my guts." he said with annoyance. "Can you wrap up here? I don't want to cause any trouble." he asked.
Pegasus nodded, "Da, and thank you for your aid Invincible." she said gratefully.
"No problem…um, can I…."
"Yes you may pet her." Pegasus said, noticing him looking at her companion who Mako immediately petted behind the ears, the dog panting happily at the fellow hero.
"Ok this trip is officially worth it." Mako said before shooting off in the direction where he had left his equipment that Melissa had made for him to go to space.
"Thanks for the lift Mako. Though I have to admit, I have some reservations about this whole thing." Thirteen said as Mako carried the space fairing hero through the air and up into the sky. Since Mako was able of easily going into space, he would simply carry his teacher to the ship that was in orbit around the moon. "As your teacher I don't think I can condone you missing classes." she explained.
"I understand that but this is more important than my schoolwork, I mean this is helping people get a base established on Mars. I mean I get education is important but that's kind of hard to compare." he reasoned as they rose up through the clouds. "By the way your comfortable right? This is going to take a few minutes to get to the ship and I don't want you in discomfort." he asked.
The black hole heroine shook her head, "Thank you but I'm fine. And while this is important Mako, you should understand that all of us at U.A. want you to be prepared for when you become a official pro hero." she reasoned through the radio link between their helmets. Thirteen's suit was only slightly different from the one she wore when she met Class 1-A in that she had on pants and boots that matched the rest of her costume and offered protection from the vacuum of space.
Mako nodded as they reached the atmosphere of the planet and continued flying, the blue hue of the sky darkening as stars popped into view all around them in the far distance beyond the solar system. Mako smiled at the sight of the stars, "Man….space is awesome." he said.
Thirteen hummed, "Yeah it is." she agreed.
He looked down at his professor curiously, "Thirteen, can I ask you something?" She looked up at him and nodded, "Why did you decide to teach at U.A.? I mean you're a space hero so I was just wondering…" he trailed off, not sure of how to respectfully finish that sentence.
"Why am I not on the moon station but instead on earth?" she asked. He nodded, "Simple, it's where I'm needed more." she replied simply. "When I finally got control over my quirk, I was approached to help establish the base on the moon. Black Hole can help take care of any problems that the stars can throw at us out here. But the longer I was up here, the more I heard about what was happening on Earth, how many disasters happened and…..I realized that I could help, so I did." she explained proudly as they continued flying around the Earth.
Within minutes they reached the moon's orbit, the spaceship that was miles above the surface of the moon looked like the shuttles that would take off and then land on a runway on Earth, only a much larger scale with bigger thrusters. "Take us to the underside of the ship, that's where the docking bay is." Thirteen instructed.
Flying underneath the ship, he came upon a circular hole that was open for them, flying up inside, the hole closed beneath their feet as Mako lowered his professor down in the zero gravity before touching down himself. As air was released into the room, the circular door opened with a man in a blue space uniform floating inside, the man was older and had stone like skin that was the color of granite. "Thirteen! Glad to see you again!" he said, floating over and embracing the heroine who returned the hug.
"Good to see you too Brock." Thirteen greeted before pulling away and gesturing to Mako, "This is my student Invincible. He's going to help establish the outpost on mars. Invincible this is Brock Ender, he's the captain and also responsible for terraforming on Mars." she introduced.
Mako bowed his head respectfully, "Nice to meet you sir." he greeted.
Brock smiled and raised his hand which Mako instead shook, "You too kid, I'll be honest I wasn't sure if we needed protection on this mission but I'd rather have you here and not need you then need you and not have you." he said welcomingly as Thirteen walkd between them.
"Brock is actually responsible for the moon base instillation, his quirk allows him to manipulate soil and rocks." she explained.
Brock chuckled, "Yeah my folks thought they were real clever naming me 'Brock'." he laughed as he turned, stepping off from the ground with Mako and Thirteen floating after him, "Come on, I'll show you to your quarters and the different parts of the ship, we got two days to get to Mars, three to get the groundwork down, and then two for the return trip." Brock said as the trio floated through the ship.
(Three Days Later)
Izuku was tired after their heroics class, they had been allowed some time to train at ground gamma which allowed him to finally experiment with the new5% full cowling that Mako had helped him develop. "Deku you look like your gonna fall over." Uraraka noticed, the green haired boy blinking himself awake as the class walked back to the school. Aizawa was leading the class ahead of his students while the class chatted amongst themselves, their internships were next week but that doesn't mean that their classes were going to give them any breaks.
"Sorry, I just wanted to push myself today." he said.
The gravity user smiled and shook her head, "Hey I don't blame you! You were zooming around today it was so cool!" she praised, making him blush.
"Y-Yeah, Mako helped me find a way to use a small percent of my power effectively. Before I thought of just using it on one part of my body, but now I just use it across my whole body." he explained, his friend listening intently.
"Oh man I would never have considered that, I thought that since you just used one part of your body at a time that was just how it worked." she admitted.
Deku nodded, "Yeah, it really made me open my eyes, I need to be more vestile." he agreed, "But I also need to get used to moving around with what I can do now, so before I try any combat, I'm getting used to more basic movements with my power." he explained.
"Oh so you don't run into a wall or something?" Uraraka asked, Izuku nearly stiffened as that was what exactly had happened when he was training. But he was glad that no one was around to witness his little blunder, "Well hey that means that you and Mako can finally train together when he gets back!" Uraraka realized, making Izuku smile and nod in excitement.
None of them had heard anything from their absent classmate after he sent a photo of earth from the space ship he was on to Mars with in the group chat. But it also gave Izuku a goal, to surprise his friend with the progress he's made in the time he's been gone. Tomorrow I'll try traveling vertically, I got to work on how I land without losing momentum. I should look up some reference videos tonight. The inheritor thought before Aizawa stopped in front of them, "Sensei?" he asked as the class stopped.
Shoji's mouth lifted up, "Wait, do you guys hear that?"
Bakugo gave him a look, "Dumbass we don't have ears the size of pillows!" he retorted.
"I hear it." Aizawa said, making the class quiet down. It was a distant whistling….that was getting progressively louder. Aizawa's eyes scanned the area, being on the U.A. grounds, he assumed that the noise was something that the support course was testing, they used the nearby ground Beta to test their equipment so it could be something like a drone that was moving at high speed.
"It sounds like it's…." Jiro trailed off before looking up at the sky and her eyes widening, "Holy crap!" she exclaimed as she pointed up at the sky, the entire class looking up to see a firey ball heading right for the campus grounds!
Aizawa sprung into action immediately, "Everyone fall back to ground-!" he began before he saw the comet abruptly turn towards the class! The teacher and class watched as it suddenly began to slow it's acceleration, crashing into the ground a few yards away from the students and teacher.
"What is that?!" Mineta exclaimed.
"Was that an asteroid?" Tokoyami asked.
"Is it a villain?!" Bakugo excitedly asked.
Aizawa pulled some of his capture tape loose, "Everyone stand back!" he said as he began to approach the smoking crater, through the smoke a figure stood up and walked forward with it's hands raised up. When the smoke cleared, the entire class and professor blinked in astonishment at what stood before them.
Standing in front of them was human shaped….robot, it was grey and dark blue in color with plated armor covering it's chest, arms, legs, and had a helmet that seemed to fold forward and extrude out from the forehead. It's white eyes looked at them in alarm. "Sorry! Sorry, I didn't mean to crash into your school I just came from-look doesn't matter I'm looking for people who work here, do you work here?" he asked, pointing at Eraserhead who didn't so much as blink as his quirk stared down the intruder to the school.
"Who are you?" Aizawa asked firmly.
"My name is Tech Jacket! Your friend Invincible sent me here for help! There's an alien armada coming and they're going to try and take over Earth!"
To be continued…..
Next: Invasion! Part 1 of 3!
AN: Haha! Yes! Finally! I've been planning this little arc since the Omni Man fight! For those of you who don't know, Tech Jacket is another comic written by Robert Kirkman that takes place within the Invincible Universe. The next three chapters are an original story I planned out that I originally was going to have happen instead of the Internships, but when I found out that there was a week between the students picking their names and the internships, It's also why I needed Deku to learn Full Cowling a little sooner.
But now I can do both which is fun, also this is really coincidental because this semester I'm taking an astrology class and I know more about space then I did before.
Also, happy anniversary to the Invincible TV series! Happy coincidence.
Also, and this mainly happens because I get bored, but what would you guys think of a MHA Spider-Man fanfic? I know, I know, I have a daredevil one already but to be honest I didn't even plan past the first season and….well that was before I read that Shigarki could dust an entire city. I love DD but I don't know how he wouldn't just….die from that.
Now then, reviews:
Yea-ya: It's called building anticipation, or blue balling if you would. As for the Batman the conflict of the story to me was that Batman realizes that just going around and using violence to combat the issues of Gotham isn't enough. The ending of the movie is him realizes that he needs to be a symbol of hope for the people of the city, it's ripped straight out of Batman Ego in why he doesn't kill people. The overall conflict I think is that the Riddler is killing people and Batman needs to stop it, while also uncovering how deeply corrupt Gotham really is.
It is long admittedly, but I honestly can't think of a part that you could cut. And yeah I don't know Japanese VA's at all.
Super Commrade: Yeah that's basically what I wanted to show this chapter, we get a little of it in the movie and it's great to see there so I just wanted to show that Melissa can handle herself.
Fanfictioner8: Um…..this is all just fictional. I mean I sort of explain it here, technology in MHA is really advanced so they probably could have better ways of space travel then we currently do. Also in MHA we have super powers that can rewind people to nothing, or change the weather, or decay an entire city. Plus this leans more on the Invincible side of things where it's…..well it's a comic book. I mean Mako himself is an Alien.
I'm just not super focusing on details like that because it's a comic book story, and I'd assume that since they have a space hero in MHA they must have advanced space travel or something.
