Tadano walked next to Komi, closest to the road, as they both stayed silent. Tadano couldn't help but notice that Komi was thinking of something, but he decided that if she wanted to talk, she would say something...or write it down, since she brought her notebook with her. "So...uh...Komi," Tadano said, breaking the silence. "You, uh...you look very pretty..."
Komi perked up and looked at Tadano. She pulled out her notebook and wrote something down as she kept up with him. She held it up. 'Thank you.' Tadano smiled. "Of course, Komi!"
She flipped the paper and began to write again. 'I think you look good too, Tadano.' Tadano flinched and his face grew warm. "Uh...thanks, Komi..." She nodded. They walked in silence again. Tadano held the door open for her as they continued to be silent.
Komi bowed to Tadano as she entered. He checked for more students coming, and when he saw no one, he entered after Komi. When he entered, the party was already bustling and full of life. He saw Najimi in the corner of the room, talking. Najimi?! Tadano walked over to them. "Najimi! What are you doing here?"
Najimi stopped talking. Dang. I've been caught. They turned around with a nervous smile. "Tadano! Hey! So you came then!"
"Of course I came! With a DATE, like you said," Tadano said, emphasizing the word 'date'.
"Oh, so who is it then?" Najimi asked jokingly.
"Don't change the subject, Najimi," Tadano replied. "You said we had to come with a date, didn't you?"
"Oh, did I miss something?" Najimi asked.
"Yes...you did."
"Ha ha, my bad!" Najimi said, laughing. "I must've forgotten the part where it said a date is recommended but not needed!" Najimi laughed nervously and ran off. Tadano sighed. Now that he's here, he can't just back out of it. Komi wasn't going to come if she didn't have anyone to go with. He had helped her come and that's all that mattered.
Tadano joined Komi by the snack table. He had always felt like a wallflower when it came to parties. He wasn't really the party time, and he still isn't. However, he perked up, hoping that with Komi there, things would change.
"Okay!" Aizawa called on the speaker. "Now that the party's actually going, there are a few things you guys need to know! First off, this is a New Year's Dance so it'll last until midnight! Secondly, we don't want anyone leaving this building! You are allowed to walk down the halls and into other classrooms but do not go outside! Third, the most very important rule, no dirty dancing! If we catch it, we will call your parent and you will go home! Any questions?"
The room stayed silent. "Great! We'll start the music back up and enjoy your night!" The music began again and the student began to talk and dance again. Tadano watched as Najimi went over towards the speakers. He never understood how anyone can be so close. He's always felt the vibrations all the way through his body and he's never liked it. Plus, it's loud.
"Komi, are you doing alright?" Tadano checked. He doesn't want Komi to feel left out, especially if she wanted to go to begin with. She nodded. In fact, it seems as she's enjoying it. She's not doing anything though. Maybe she likes the music. "Komi, you know you can go and request a song, right?"
Komi seemed excited. She wrote something and held it up. 'Where?' Tadano smiled. "I'll show you."
He led Komi to a small table with a piece of paper and a pen. There are already a few suggestions written down on it. "Right there," Tadano said, pointing at it. Komi walked up to the paper and began to write down a song. When she finished, she turned around and held up her notebook to Tadano. 'Do you want to request one?'
"Well, uh..." Tadano said. "Honestly, I've never written anything down."
'There's a first for everything, right?' He smiled, "Yeah, you're right." Komi watched as he walked over to the table. He tried to ignore the music, since he is standing next to the speaker. When he finished his suggestion, he turned back to Komi. "Done?" She nodded. "That's good!"
He returned to the back. He noticed Komi following him. Najimi joined them in the corner. "Ah, so that's who you invited, Tadano!" Najimi said, playfully elbowing him.
"I invited her because she wanted to come but she didn't want to come alone," Tadano said, hoping Najimi wouldn't take it the wrong way.
"Sure," Najimi said. They walked over to Komi. "Hey, Komi! Why don't you dance?" Komi began to write again. 'I don't dance.'
"I know you can!" Najimi cheered as they grabbed Komi's arm and walked away from the table.
After a while, Najimi invited Tadano to dance too. Honestly, he was enjoying it. The only times they didn't dance was on the slow songs. Tadano and Komi always sat together in the corner. Komi was hiding from everyone who would come to surround her and ask for a dance. Tadano was too nervous to ask anyone so he sat them out.
Within the last hour, Najimi pulled Tadano aside from Komi. "Tadano! You haven't danced yet!"
"Yeah, and?" Tadano replied.
"You have to dance with someone! I've danced with a different person every time so far!"
"But that's you," Tadano said. "You like parties and dancing and you don't get nervous! I can't ask anyone to dance!"
"Sure you can!" Najimi cheered. "You can ask Komi to come to the dance with you, so why don't you ask her to dance too?"
"It's just that...I've never been very good at talking to or with girls."
"Then change that! Today! Ask Komi on the last dance!"
"But-"
"No 'buts', Tadano! I know you can do it! Go on!" Tadano joined Komi again at the table. "Last slow song of the night everyone!" Aizawa exclaimed. "I hope everyone's had a chance to dance! If not, you better find a partner!"
The song died down, and turned into a slow song. This one is Tadano's request. 'Can I Have This Dance?' Tadano took a deep breath. Yeah, Najimi is right. If I can ask Komi to come to the dance with me, I can ask her to dance. He exhaled and walked towards Komi, once again, hiding in her corner.
"Komi?" Tadano asked. She looked up. "Can I have this dance?" He held out a hand to Komi. She smiled and accepted it. Tadano wiped his other hand on his pants. I hope my hands aren't too sweaty, he thought as he grabbed her hand. Komi put her hand on Tadano's shoulder and he put her hand around her waist. I've never been this close to a girl before, Tadano panicked.
Komi looked down at their feet, then returned her gaze to Tadano. She looked nervous. "Do you know how to dance, Komi?" Tadano asked. Komi shook her head for the reply. "I...I can teach you, K-Komi," Tadano offered. She nodded.
Tadano began to dance while Komi stared at his feet. "It's just a square, Komi. Nothing...too hard." She began to copy his movements. "There you go, you're getting it!" After a few seconds, Komi became confident in her skills and her gaze met Tadano's again. Tadano became flustered and started tripping on his feet.
He stopped when Komi gave him a look of reassurance. He took a deep breath again and calmed down. You got this, Tadano. He began to dance again. As he stared into Komi's eyes, all the world around them faded. Everything but the music and his own heartbeat.
Once the music stopped, Komi and Tadano stopped dancing, but they continued to stare at each other, as if something between them sparked. They walked closer. Najimi came up on their right sides. "Hey!" Their voice made Tadano and Komi flinch and let go of each other's hand. "Did you two dance?"
"Why?" Tadano asked.
"Just curious."
The dance ended shortly after and Tadano walked Komi home. Tadano couldn't help but think. Was there a moment between us? We wouldn't stop staring at each other, even once the song stopped. So why didn't we? It was just a friendly dance between the two of us...right? Tadano's face became pink as he continued to think about it.
Tadano bid Komi goodnight as she walked into her home.
Author's Note
I made Highschool Musical references in here. I wanted something funny to happen and I couldn't think of a good song, so you get those. Another thing you should know, I have never read the manga and am keeping up with it through the anime so there could be plenty of things I missed.
