Author's note: Many, many apologies for taking so long with this update *winces* It wasn't my intention to keep you waiting for this long, but for some reason I can't seem to get my writing schedule in order and my brain had a hard time focusing on this one. But I kept going this time to finally finish it!
Head's up: for the next two weeks I'll be following online Japanese summer classes at night, so my schedule will be even whackier than it already is. I'll try my hardest to get up to date with all my projects, though!

Chapter 6
"Erm, are you sure?" Naruto asked uncertainly, exchanging a glance with Mimikyu.
Mimikyu's fake head wobbled back and forth slightly as he looked between his trainer and Vulpix, but he didn't appear annoyed.
"Vulpix!" Vulpix stared at him with bright eyes, her tails swishing gently back and forth, stirring up some leaves, as she sat down.
"You don't have to feel obligated to stay just because I helped you," Naruto said, figuring that maybe Vulpix was feeling guilty. "I didn't mind helping you; I'm glad I could do it."
"Vulpix!" she repeated stubbornly, scraping her left paw across the forest floor.
Worrying his lip between his teeth, Naruto slowly retrieved a Pokéball from his bag. The tent still needed to be packed up, but he had grabbed his bag with him just in case Vulpix was in need of another Potion.
"If you're really sure," he said and took a deep breath, aiming the Pokéball at the Fire Pokémon.
Vulpix looked back frankly and then the red light shot out of the Pokéball and enveloped her. It embraced her completely before the ball locked her inside; a quiet click sound signifying the successful capture.
He stared down at the ball which didn't even roll sideways to show hesitation and threw it in the air once more, calling out, "Vulpix, I choose you!"
Instantly the red light appeared once more and Vulpix leaped gracefully out of the Pokéball, landing lightly on the ground with her tails held high.
"Well, guess we don't need to worry about finding a third member," Naruto said bemused. That was kind of … handy?
He hadn't really expected to find a third member this easily and without even having to find them, but well, he wasn't going to complain either. Especially because Vulpix might give them an advantage at the first gym if that one really dealt with Grass Types.
A ticklish feeling around his left leg had him looking down, straight into Mimikyu's eyes. "Mimi, Mimikyu?" Train together?
Naruto grinned, pocketing Vulpix' Pokéball. "Yeah, let's train together. What do you say, Vulpix? Ready to show us which moves you know?"
Vulpix puffed out her chest. "Vulpix!" Definitely!
"Let's go then," Naruto smiled and turned around towards the direction of the tent again. "We've got some training to do!"
Vulpix turned out to know some pretty great moves already. She knew Ember, which managed to destroy a whole bush; Quick Attack which had accidentally startled Mimikyu into nearly attacking her, and Incinerate, which engulfed a trunk which had fallen down during an earlier storm. By the time the fire died out there was nothing left of the tree trunk, which impressed Naruto. It showed just how strong Vulpix was already.
"I'm really impressed with the both of you!" he said enthusiastically while they ate lunch. "You both know some amazing moves already, this is great!"
"Mimi!" Mimikyu looked pleased, digging into his small sandwich with gusto. He'd been confused by the meal at first but after Naruto had shown him how to eat it, he'd ceased being hesitant about it.
Vulpix was eating hers daintily, taking small measured bites while sitting next to Mimikyu. Sometimes one of his shadowy tendrils would slip from underneath his costume as he took another sandwich from the plate and would brush against her paw or one of her tails. She didn't appear disturbed by it, merely flicking her tail once in a while.
Naruto was glad to see that. Considering Mimikyu's undeserved bad reputation, he had worried about finding other team members. Beating all eight gyms with just one Pokémon was nigh impossible, so other members were needed, but what if they wouldn't be able to get along with Mimikyu? Even Ghost Types seemed to prefer ignoring Mimikyu, which was quite sad.
So it was good to see that Vulpix at least wasn't bothered by Mimikyu's appearance. If they would be able to find other team members like her, that would be so amazing! He had no idea yet which other Pokémon he might want on their team, but that was fine. They had all the time in the world to figure it out and he was sure he would know which Pokémon would be right when he encountered them.
"I was thinking that maybe we could train for a couple of days more before we leave the forest," he mused aloud, picking another sandwich from the plate. "Typically the first gym shouldn't be too difficult, because otherwise not many people would want to do the Gym Challenge. But it doesn't hurt to train more either. Just in case."
Training was the only way to get stronger after all. Certainly, the further they would travel, the stronger Pokémon they would encounter, Pokémon which could stand up to the Gyms close by without too much training, but in order to capture those, his own Pokémon would have to be stronger in the first place. He couldn't always count on Pokémon wanting to join his team willingly after all. He'd been lucky enough so far that his two Pokémon wanted to join him willingly, but it would be dangerous to keep relying on that luck.
"Vulpix," Vulpix agreed easily, batting at Mimikyu's shadowy arm when he went to grab another sandwich.
That surprised him so much that his arm hovered above the plate, letting her snatch the sandwich he'd been aiming for. Her eyes gleamed mischievously when he grumbled annoyed, but he simply picked another one, allowing her this small victory.
"Maybe tomorrow we can try to find some Grass Types and see how well you do against them?" Naruto suggested, leaning back on his hands; finished with lunch now. "That'd be the best training I think."
Vulpix shouldn't have any trouble fighting a Grass Pokémon, considering she was a Fire Type, but he wasn't so sure how Mimikyu would do. Clearly the small being wasn't weak, considering he'd fought Sandslash, Talonflame and even a Tyrogue in defence of Naruto, but those weren't Grass Types.
He wanted his team to be as prepared as possible when they tackled their first Gym, so they would have to go look for some Grass Pokémon soon. It would have been handy if he knew which Pokémon were present in every gym, but they would just have to make do with training against several Grass Types, he supposed.
"Mimikyu, Mimi?" Full out battle?
Naruto looked at Mimikyu, but the small Pokémon merely appeared curious instead of apprehensive. "Yeah, maybe not until they actually faint, but I think it would be good for training. What do you two think?"
Vulpix simply shrugged, looking unbothered, but Mimikyu raised two shadowy arms in the air as if he was celebrating, making Naruto snicker.
"You that eager to show how strong you are, hm?" he teased, his grin widening when Mimikyu chirped in agreement.
Well, he could hardly wait to see with his own eyes this time how good Mimikyu was at fighting opponents!
The next morning he spent time breaking down their camp first while Vulpix and Mimikyu were enjoying breakfast. They needed to start moving west if they ever wanted to get out of this forest and actually reach the first gym.
The plan today was to track down some Grass Pokémon, fight them and see how well Vulpix and Mimikyu did in a battle. They would set up camp during the evening again, hopefully having made some actual progress in the woods by then.
"All right, ready to go in your Pokéballs?" he questioned, placing the clean plates back in his bag. He zipped it shut before straightening out, holding the two Pokéballs in his hands.
It had started to drizzle, cold, tiny specks of water hitting his face occasionally. It wasn't raining hard enough yet to require an umbrella or a hood, but Vulpix at the very least might be more comfortable in her Pokéball. Mimikyu didn't really have a weakness against water as far as Naruto was aware of, but dragging a wet costume around couldn't be easy either.
Both his Pokémon nodded and easily let themselves be absorbed by the red light. Clicking the balls onto his belt, he heaved the bag across his left shoulder and started walking, leaving their first camp for the final time.
There was a group of Tyrogue arguing with each other and he gave them a wide berth, not wanting to get caught in that fight. He'd been lucky enough not to have been attacked by one of them last time, he wasn't going to push his luck again.
As he walked towards the west, the trees made way for more open fields and Pokémon could be seen puttering about, flying above him or rushing through the tall grass. He passed some Caterpie meandering near some trees while Metapod popped up above the grass sometimes. He considered them for a brief moment, but kept walking instead. While they were Grass Pokémon, they wouldn't offer a good indication as to how strong Mimikyu and Vulpix actually were. Vulpix already had a big advantage because of her Type and Mimikyu had managed to take on Sandslash, Talonflame and a Tyrogue – Caterpie and Metapod would not offer that much of a challenge unfortunately.
He would need to find Grass Pokémon who could offer more of a fight, ones that would show just how strong his Pokémon actually were. Someone like –
Bellsprout?
Naruto came to an abrupt halt when he spotted a Bellsprout waggling across the grass a couple of feet away from him. As if sensing his gaze, Bellsprout turned around and eyed him blankly, swaying gently back and forth. They stared at each other for a moment before Bellsprout uttered a cry and next thing Naruto knew, he had to jump to the side or be attacked by Vine Whip; the whips smacking down on the ground hard, sending grass flying.
"Well, guess that answers the question whether you're up for a battle," Naruto muttered and threw his first Pokéball into the air. "Mimikyu, I choose you!"
Mimikyu exited the ball with a cry, landing with a soft thump on the forest floor. At once he tensed up, his attention completely fixed on Bellsprout, who eyed him warily.
"Bell, Bell, Bellsprout," Bellsprout muttered and vines shot out again, but this time they shot towards Mimikyu, opening wide.
"Mimikyu, watch out!" Naruto warned, recognising the move Wrap.
He'd seen Pokémon caught by that move before and while not overly damaging, it was a good way to hurt a Pokémon and incapacitate them for at least a little while. He was pretty certain that the move couldn't damage Ghost types, but it could leave Mimikyu incapable of attacking for some time and that was an outcome he was eager to avoid.
Mimikyu shuffled out of the way just in time, but Naruto couldn't help but wince when he saw just how close the vines came to wrapping around him. Speed didn't appear to be Mimikyu's greatest strength; that was something they were going to have to work on, he guessed, because being faster than the opponent could literally mean winning the match.
"Use Shadow Sneak!" Naruto instructed, biting down on his lip. Scratch would also do the trick, he supposed, but he wanted to see how much effect Shadow Sneak would have on a Grass Type.
"Mimi!" Mimikyu extended his shadow rapidly across the ground, swerving to the left when Bellsprout went to use Vine Whip again. The shadow shot underneath him and reared up, slamming down on Bellsprout, who cried out startled.
He wasn't down yet, though, and when vines once more rose up, Naruto called out, "Use another Shadow Sneak!"
"Mimi!" Once more Mimikyu's shadow danced across the ground and rose up even faster than before, engulfing Bellsprout.
The Grass Pokémon gurgled something, his eyes widening, before he slumped down; knocked unconscious.
For a couple of seconds, neither Naruto nor Mimikyu said something as they stared stunned at the passed out Bellsprout. Then Naruto cheered, jumped up and down before rushing forwards and picking up Mimikyu in a hug, who squeaked startled, wrapping shadowy appendages around the blond's arms.
"You did it, Mimikyu! You defeated a Pokémon for the first time since we became a team!" Naruto praised excitedly. "You were so cool!"
Mimikyu stared at him in wonder before he started wriggling in Naruto's hold from excitement, unable to contain his happiness. "Mimikyu, Mimi, Mimikyu?" I did good?
"You did amazing!" Naruto swore and hugged him again, careful not to bunch up his costume too much, before he placed him down on the ground again. "Let's find other Pokémon to train, okay?"
"Mimi!"
Spurred on by his earlier success, Mimikyu defeated one Grass Pokémon after the other. Sometimes it took a bit longer, depending on who the opponent was and how strong, but in the end he always emerged as the victor, which was obviously doing wonders for his self-esteem.
Likewise Vulpix, as expected, had no trouble defeating her opponents either. When a Maractus turned out to be a tougher opponent than anticipated, she surprised both the Maractus and Naruto by sticking out her tongue at him. Poor Maractus was so confused by that action that he didn't duck out of the way in time to avoid Vulpix' Incinerate attack.
"I don't know whether that would be counted as a move or not, but congratulations on winning again, Vulpix," Naruto told her somewhat bemused as he scratched the back of his head.
He'd heard of the move Baby Doll Eyes and Lick, but he didn't think he'd ever seen a Pokémon sticking out their tongue during a battle to distract the other one. Well, it had worked, so …
When they settled in to sleep later that night, they were already much closer to the next town than before.
Two days later saw Naruto exiting the forest and walking into the town where he could earn his first badge finally.
That thought had nerves flashing up for the first time.
This town was not that much bigger than his hometown actually, giving off the same rustic feeling. Several houses were lined up across the cobbled streets and people greeted each other amicably when they passed each other. Some kids ran past him, a Butterfree following them, and he stepped aside to let a cart pass through. It was being pulled by a Mudsdale and the large Pokémon lumbered past him. His Trainer nodded at Naruto in greeting and the blond returned it, quirking a smile when Mudsdale briefly looked at him.
Walking into the centre, he was greeted by the signs of the local Pokémart and the Pokécentre. He made a beeline for the last one, figuring that it couldn't hurt to have both his Pokémon be checked over by a professional. Neither Mimikyu nor Vulpix had sustained any severe injuries bar some scratches or small welts when they had been too slow to avoid a Vine Whip. Those had been easy to fix with a small dosage of Potion, but it was always better to be safe than sorry.
Nurse Joy smiled at him friendly when he approached the desk. "Hello, dear, you're here to heal your Pokémon?" She placed some papers on the desk.
"Yes, just a check-up," Naruto confirmed and placed the two Pokéballs on the counter. "I healed them in the forest, but I just want to be sure."
"Not a problem, I can help," she reassured him and took his Pokéballs. "Chansey, we've got two new patients. They just require a check-up."
"Chansey!" Chansey agreed easily and together with Nurse Joy, she disappeared through a door.
Nurse Joy quickly reappeared again alone. "They'll be finished in five minutes," she informed him. "This your first time visiting?"
"Yes, I just started my journey," Naruto admitted and his cheeks flushed somewhat underneath her appraising eyes. "I was wondering – where can I find the Gym?"
"Ah, you'll have to walk all the way to the end of the town," she answered and pointed at the map hanging on the wall. "Right before the next route, you'll find the Gym on your left. It has its own small forest, so you can't miss it."
Having a forest attached to a Gym specialised in Grass Types was probably very handy.
"It's been quiet here lately, so I'm sure the Gym Leader will appreciate a new Challenger showing up," she smiled. "I'll go check on your Pokémon, okay?"
"Yes, thank you." He turned his head when the front doors hissed open and a brown haired girl walked inside, wearing a white tank top, cut off jeans and a dark leather bag. She had several Pokéballs strapped around her waist and she offered him a nod before taking a seat near the magazine rack.
"Here you go, they're both healthy as can be," Nurse Joy smiled, placing the Pokéballs back on the counter. "I love the colour of that one, by the way. A customised one, right?"
"Yeah, got it customised some years ago," Naruto smiled proudly, admiring the orange colour before attaching both balls to his belt.
"You don't see many customised Pokéballs around these parts," she commented, tapping her chin. "Must be a really special Pokémon!"
"Yeah, he definitely is," Naruto grinned. "Thank you for checking them."
"Not a problem. Glad I could help," she smiled. "Good luck with your first Gym!"
"Thanks!" At the mention of the Gym, he started to become nervous again and his steps were a bit more hesitant than before as he walked out of the Pokécentre and sought out the indicators that would show him where the new route would start.
It was perhaps ridiculous to be so nervous about his first Gym, especially when he knew he had a fairly high chance at winning the battle with his Pokémon, but he couldn't help himself. This was going to be his very first Gym Challenge, something he had thought for years he would never get to experience, and he didn't want to mess up.
"Okay, we can do this," he muttered to himself as he turned to the right, following the arrow. "We trained for this, we're ready. Mimikyu can handle himself and Vulpix has the Type advantage. We'll be fine."
They could do this. They had trained for several days, fighting various Pokémon. They always said that the first Gym was the easiest one, so they would be fine. They would totally win this for sure!
That was what he kept telling himself, trying to stave off the nerves as a large building doomed up in front of him.
The first Gym.
He froze up unwillingly, staring at the light green coloured building in awe. Ivy crawled up alongside the walls, sneaking over the glass dome. Behind the building, large trees towered over the roof and somewhere there was the sound of water; a creek perhaps?
The path towards the doors was merely dirt; a path worn out through the grass. Potted flowers covered the front of the Gym, making it abundantly clear to everybody that this was a Gym preferring Grass Types.
The glass doors hissed when they opened and the scent of wet earth invaded his nostrils when he stepped inside. In awe he stared at the maze sprawled in front of him. The maze had been created out of trees and tall bushes and stretched out as far as the eye could see. Just how big was this Gym really?
"You a Trainer?"
Naruto nearly jumped three feet in the air at the unexpected voice and whirled around, coming face to face with a black haired young man. His face was utterly blank and he was quite pale as if he hadn't seen the sunlight in months. He wore long dark trousers and a dark grey crop top for some reason.
"Erm, yes, I am. I'm here to challenge the Gym," Naruto said and cleared his throat.
The young man inclined his head. "My name is Sai. I'm an assistant in this Gym. You'll be facing Yamato, the Gym Leader as soon as you have made your way through the maze." Sai pointed at the maze in question. "No other Trainers for you to confront before the Gym Leader, but you might get attacked by other Pokémon. Watch out before they send you to sleep."
His smile was equally blank as his face when he added, "Good luck and don't get hit by Sleep Powder."
"I'll try not to," Naruto said warily and couldn't help but eye the other man before he hurried towards the maze. He took a deep breath and walked forwards.
Here in the maze itself, the scent of wet earth was even more pronounced, coupled with something else, something sickly sweet, and he wondered whether that came from traces of Sleep Powder. As long as he didn't get hit full on with the attack, he should be fine, though, so cautiously he walked forwards, ready to grab one of his Pokéballs if necessary.
The first split arrived soon and after a short bout of hesitation, he chose to go left – only to end up in a dead end, barred from walking further by a towering bush. Sighing, he returned and chose right, which sent him in a loop around a basin of water of all things.
Deeper and deeper into the maze he went, losing his sense of direction around the seventh or eight turn he had to take. Once, he had to hastily backtrack when he saw the shadow of a Gloom; its sickly sweet scent growing more pronounced as it drew closer in his direction.
He had no clue how long he'd been walking around the maze and didn't even know whether he was going in the right direction at all. Every turn looked exactly the same and he questioned darkly whether Yamato was just playing with him. Maybe the guy got a kick out of Trainers walking around in circles? Where even was the exit? He tried to peek over the edge, but that didn't tell him much, except that Yamato was definitely a botanic lover, considering the sheer amount of trees and bushes present in this maze.
Right as he was about to contemplate whether it was legal to burn a hole through this maze, the path narrowed in front of him, leading him straight to a pair of yellow coloured steps. Was this finally the exit?
Perking up, he hurried towards the steps, eager to finally leave this damned maze behind him. He'd already come close to being dosed with Sleep Powder a couple of times and he didn't want to find out just how much longer he could avoid all those Pokémon in there. He would have to consider stocking up on Awakenings after this Gym Battle was over. Stupid that he hadn't thought of that sooner. Damn, he could only hope that Yamato's Pokémon either wouldn't know how to use a sleep inducing move or that his own Pokémon would be quick enough to dodge it.
A large field greeted him when he burst out of the maze and he nearly collapsed in relief when he realised this meant that he'd finally found a way out. Thank Arceus for that!
To his left, a brown haired man rose up from a chair, smiling faintly. He was wearing dark blue trousers and a blue shirt and his boots were splattered with mud.
"Hello there, my name is Yamato. I'm this town's Gym Leader," he introduced himself, halting a couple of feet away from Naruto.
"Uzumaki Naruto," Naruto introduced himself.
"I must say I'm surprised you managed to find a way out by yourself. Other Trainers usually tend to prefer blasting the walls away or burning them down to find the exit," Yamato remarked casually.
Naruto stared at him dumbfounded. "Wait, I could actually do that? I thought that wouldn't be allowed!" he said dismayed. He could have found a way out of that maze sooner? He was so stupid!
Yamato laughed. "Well, yes. Anything is allowed save for making the entire building explode. The point is to get out of the maze without being sent to sleep by the Pokémon inside it. How you accomplish that is up to you."
"Damn it," Naruto groaned, slapping his forehead.
"You still found your way out of the maze rather quickly, though," Yamato reassured him, still chuckling which wasn't helping Naruto's embarrassment. "If you're ready, we can start our battle."
Shaking off the embarrassment, Naruto instead was filled with determination now. "Yes, let's start our battle!"
Time to see whether he really had what it took to be a great Pokémon Trainer.
Yamato's first Pokémon turned out to be Oddish, so Naruto sent out Vulpix, knowing from personal experience in the forest that Oddish could be rather tenacious. Vulpix knew how to handle Oddish, though, and even though this must be the first time she'd ever been inside a Gym, the new surroundings didn't deter her.
Instead she was wholly focused on Oddish, dodging his attacks with ease and the type of grace that Naruto wished he possessed himself.
"Oddish, use Sleep Powder!" Yamato called out. If he was bothered by how Vulpix constantly darted out of Oddish' reach, he didn't show it.
Bad move, Naruto thought grimly and clenched his hands to fists. He could have guessed that Oddish would know that move. "Vulpix, get out of the way as fast as you can!"
"Vulpix!"
Sleep Powder had a wide range given that it was nothing but fine dust, but the Gym field was larger and thankfully covered with bushes and plants as well. Their presence made it easy for Vulpix to rush to them and duck underneath a large bush at the exact moment Oddish expelled his Sleep Powder. The fine dust glittered in the air, covering a wide area, but luckily it couldn't reach the bush underneath which Vulpix was hiding.
Barely had the dust settled before Naruto shouted, "Now, Vulpix!"
Vulpix leaped into the air and launched Incinerate at Oddish, who definitely hadn't expected an attack to come from above. The small Grass Pokémon squealed as the fire engulfed him and panicked he ran to a basin of water, dunking himself into it. He laid there slumped, obviously out for the count.
"Oddish, come back," Yamato ordered and returned him to his Pokéball. He appraised Naruto. "Not bad, Uzumaki-san. Ready for my last Pokémon?"
"Absolutely," Naruto grinned and taking a gamble, he returned Vulpix to her Pokéball as well, letting Mimikyu take her place instead.
"Interesting," was all that Yamato commented before he threw his own Pokéball in the air. "Bounsweet, I choose you!"
The pinkish-purple Fruit Pokémon appeared with a chirp, landing gently onto the ground, and Naruto relaxed. Bounsweet should be doable for Mimikyu.
"Mimikyu, use Shadow Sneak!"
Bounsweet tittered, jumping out of the way before Mimikyu's shadow could stretch over him. That made Mimikyu growl, annoyed that his first attack had missed.
"Bounsweet, Razor Leaf."
"Mimikyu, watch out!" Naruto warned sharply, because Razor Leaf was in a whole other ballpark than Vine Whip had been.
Mimikyu bobbed his fake head, but was still a tad too slow; one of the leaves grazing his side, tearing the costume open. His shadowy appendages shot out in – alarm? Anger? Naruto wasn't sure, but he did know that it could start becoming ugly now that Mimikyu's precious costume had been damaged.
"Mimikyu, use Shadow Ball!"
Yamato looked surprised. "Wait, he knows how to - "
A dark purplish blob was instantly expelled by Mimikyu; the force behind it sending the attack quicker at Bounsweet than that the Pokémon could avoid and he yelled, rolling across the floor.
"Mimikyu, Shadow Sneak!" Naruto ordered quickly, not wanting to give Bounsweet – or Yamato for that matter – the chance to recover.
Mimikyu's shadow rapidly stretched out across the floor and before Bounsweet could jump out of the way, the shadow reared up behind him and covered him completely. When the shadow retreated, Bounsweet laid on the floor unconscious.
Yamato blinked, looking between his Pokémon and Mimikyu before he sighed and smiled. "Well, I guess you proved that you were up for this Challenge. Congratulations, Uzumaki-san, you have defeated me and won your first badge."
He strode forwards, calling Bounsweet back into his Pokéball.
"We won?" Naruto repeated faintly, staring wide-eyed at Mimikyu who gazed back, equally wide-eyed.
Sure, he'd seen Bounsweet completely unconscious just now and Yamato only had two Pokémon so he couldn't battle further, but … Did they really just win? Had they actually just won their first Gym Battle?
Yamato stopped in front of him and held out his fist. When he turned his hand around and opened it, a shiny green badge in the form of a torn leaf glinted back at Naruto.
"Here, as proof that you defeated this Gym, I give you the Leaf Badge."
His very first Gym Badge …
"Mimikyu, look, we won!" Naruto cheered, grabbing the badge and showing it to his partner.
Mimikyu started jumping up and down, squeaking in excitement as his shadowy appendages danced happily around him.
Their very first Gym Badge, how amazing was that?!
AN2: First Gym down, only seven more to go LOL I hope the battle scene wasn't too boring! It's surprisingly difficult to describe the moves ...
