Chapter 18

"How did it escape the facility?" Naruto asked shocked.

It was unheard of that Pokémon escaped such a facility! Because facilities dealt with dangerous Pokémon, they were built in such a way that escaping was impossible. Naruto had never been in one before, but he had heard of the multiple gates, the strong Trainers stationed there as guards, the various procedures that had to be completed when dealing with the Pokémon in there. He hadn't heard of a Pokémon escaping before. To have it be a Tyranitar of all Pokémon as well … This really wasn't good.

"They're not completely sure yet. They're investigating it, but so far it seems that a newbie forgot to lock a couple of doors," Tsunade paused and grimaced. "Of course those were the most important doors, because why wouldn't it be? They're interrogating him, but his career there is over, naturally."

He didn't even want to imagine just how badly this new guy had screwed up things for himself by forgetting such essential things.

"So you're going after the Tyranitar?" he questioned apprehensively.

He knew Tsunade was more than capable, because one didn't become a Pokémon Professor without being knowledgeable and strong, but a Tyranitar? Even worse a Tyranitar escaped from a facility? There was a reason why that Tyranitar had been locked up and it definitely wasn't because he had accidentally knocked someone over.

"I'm going to track him down with a group of the strongest Trainers from the facility," she replied reassuringly. "Once we've tracked him down, we'll knock him out and transport him back. Don't worry, I know what I'm doing."

He pursed his lips together, aware of the way Vulpix' warm body curled against his leg. "What rank is he?"

She sighed, clearly unwilling to answer which basically was an answer on its own.

"That high?" he questioned with a wince.

"He's Rank Four," she admitted begrudgingly.

"Rank Four?!" Naruto gaped, feeling like his eyes were about to fall out of their sockets with how they were bulging.

Rank Four was the second highest rank! It was just one rank below the worst one! Pokémon who were sent to the facility were divided according to their danger level. Rank One was simply called Mild; these were the Pokémon most likely to be rehabilitated and had the biggest chance to go back into the wild. Rank Two were the Intermediate ones; they still had a chance to be rehabilitated, but it depended on the progress they managed to make. Rank Three were the Severe ones; Pokémon who could roam around in their own part of the facility, but the chances of them ever returning to the wild were quite nihil unless the intensive therapy made a significant breakthrough.

Rank Four Pokémon were called the Rage ones, simply because of how violent and dangerous they were. According to the rumours only a select few Trainers were allowed to deal with these Pokémon as they were considered too volatile for most Trainers. These Pokémon had no chance of ever returning to the wild, as they had severely hurt people and would remain a threat if they should encounter people in the wild.

Rank Five was called Savage. These Pokémon ended up in facilities because they had hurt people to the point of them dying. Once in the facility, they were locked away from all the other Pokémon and all the Trainers. Food was dropped through a special gate in the ceiling and no Trainer was ever allowed to go near them. The Pokémon's blood lust was too great to risk any interaction, be that interaction be with a human or a Pokémon.

A Tyranitar of Rank Four? That was even more dangerous than a regular Tyranitar! And those Pokémon weren't easy to begin with!

"I know, not exactly ideal, but it is what it is," Tsunade sighed. "But you get why it's so important that we catch him as soon as possible."

A large part of Naruto wanted to insist he came along, because he didn't feel at ease at the thought of Tsunade confronting such a dangerous Pokémon. He had grown close to her since she had taken up the position of professor in his town and just the thought of her putting herself into danger because of one newbie's mistake … It had his stomach rolling uncomfortably. If it had been a Rank Three, fine, but a Rank Four? A Ranked Four Tyranitar?

"I know what you're thinking," she said gently, breaking through his brooding. "You can't come with me. You've grown stronger, yes, but not strong enough yet to tackle a Rank Four."

"I know," he mumbled, looking down.

Mimikyu peered up at him, nudging his wrist. Riolu's eyes switched between Naruto and Tsunade while Toxtricity listened attentively. Pidgeotto's heavy gaze rested on them and Vaporeon seemed unsure of what was happening, hovering next to Tsunade.

Naruto startled when a hand quickly brushed over his hair. He looked up, meeting Tsunade's smile.

"I'll be okay," she promised. "Not the first time I'll be dealing with this particular Rank."

"Did you visit Chiyo to get advice?"

"Hm, she knows more about Tyranitar than I do," she admitted with some chagrin. "So I asked her about his weak points and which ways are best to bring him down. I'll leave in the morning and meet up with the team. Our goal is to get him back in the facility within a week at the latest. Best case scenario we can sedate him as soon as we track him down, but we have to be realistic here. A Tyranitar isn't a Budew."

No, far from it. At his snort, she smiled crookedly.

"How about I make you a quick dinner and then we can catch some sleep?"

"You don't have to do that! Besides, this is Chiyo's home!" Naruto protested, waving his hands.

"UNLESS YOU EAT LIKE A SNORLAX, I DON'T CARE THAT YOU COOK MY FOOD!" Chiyo's voice suddenly bellowed through the house, making them all jump.

Naruto stared wide-eyed at Tsunade, who had a hand pressed against her chest as she scowled. "Has she been listening all this time? I thought she was upstairs!" he whispered shocked.

"She is upstairs, but her hearing can be amazing when she wants it to be," she scoffed and stood up. "Come on, let's see if she actually has something decent in her fridge."

"MY KITCHEN IS BETTER THAN A DAMN HIGH-END RESTAURANT!" was Chiyo's less than subtle commentary.

Whether she had intended for it or not, her abrupt interruption cleared up the heavy atmosphere.

For now.

His heart heavy, Naruto watched Tsunade disappear into the woods on her way to meet the team. It was still early in the morning, so early that only now streaks of red and pink were breaking up the dark night. His breath escaped him in tiny visible puffs and the cold air stung his cheeks. He wrapped his arms around himself to conserve some warmth, but couldn't bring himself to turn around and enter the house just yet.

Shuffling noises slowly coming closer alerted him to Chiyo's approach. She came to a stop next to him, leaning on her cane, following his gaze to the woods where no trace of Tsunade remained.

She huffed quietly. "That girl is a tough cookie, you know. She's not going to let herself get done in by a damn Tyranitar."

"I know," he mumbled and sighed. "It's just … Rank Four …"

"Yes, I know, she told me all about it," she said and braced both wrinkly hands on top of her cane. "Not exactly going to be easy, of course, because it's still a Tyranitar of Rank Four, but she's handled worse for sure. She wouldn't have gained this position if she was a complete idiot."

She rapped her cane against the ground, nearly hitting his foot. "Come on now, no point in moping around. You can't do anything for her, so you better concentrate on yourself. Go get some breakfast and meet me in the garden; we'll start on your Mimikyu's training."

"Right!" Naruto perked up, allowing his excitement to have Mimikyu learn a new move suppress some of the heaviness in his chest.

Tsunade knew what she was doing and it wasn't like he could do anything with his current level of experience. There was no point in moping around as Chiyo put it, so he might as well get back into training with his team. Especially now that Mimikyu had the chance to learn a new move.

And who knew? Perhaps in the future once he and his team had grown strong enough, they could actually help Tsunade!

After a quick breakfast he and his Pokémon found themselves in Chiyo's garden, which was a lot bigger than Naruto had expected. It only had natural hedges on the sides, but the back of it blended straight in with the forest and he didn't have the impression that that part of the garden was actually closed off.

His assumption proved to be right when a couple of Zigzagoon wandered into the garden for a moment, looking and sniffling around for a little while before they disappeared between the trees again.

"Don't mind them," Chiyo clucked her tongue, waving her cane in dismissal. "Sometimes Pokémon like to come into the garden, but they don't harm anyone."

"I don't mind," he reassured her and rested his hand on Mimikyu's Pokéball. "How are we going to do this? I never had a Pokémon being taught a move by another Pokémon before."

"It's simple," she said and threw a Great Ball in the air.

A Hattrem formed herself out of the red light, landing gracefully on the ground. Her soft colour pallet stood out starkly against the grey daylight. She stared up at Naruto curiously, having to crane her neck in order to do so.

"You're beautiful," Naruto praised, grinning when she preened slightly, looking delighted.

"Hm, there's a reason why she won several Beauty Contests," Chiyo said casually. "Now, Hattrem, Naruto here has a Mimikyu, who would love to learn the move Dazzling Gleam. You mind teaching him?"

Hattrem thrilled gently. Don't mind.

"Thank you," Naruto smiled and called Mimikyu out of his Pokéball.

Mimikyu appeared with a small cry, blinking when he landed right in front of Hattrem. Both Pokémon stared at each other warily for a moment before Hattrem thrilled softly and beckoned Mimikyu to follow her. Mimikyu threw an uncertain look at Naruto; some shadowy tendrils creeping from underneath his costume.

"It's okay," Naruto encouraged him. "Hattrem is going to teach you Dazzling Gleam."

Mimikyu perked up at this, instantly looking more excited and followed Hattrem to the back of the garden.

"If you want, you can train with your other Pokémon here in the garden as well," Chiyo proposed. "I don't have any moves I can teach your other Pokémon, but that doesn't mean you can't train with them while Hattrem teaches Mimikyu."

"Won't it be a bother to you?" Naruto wondered.

It was one thing to teach a stranger's Pokémon a new move. It was a whole other thing to put up with this stranger training his other Pokémon on your property.

The old lady shrugged. "I can keep myself busy indoors just fine and there's no point in you just sitting there and staring. You might as well keep your training up until Mimikyu has finished learning the move."

"Okay, well, in that case, we'll definitely take you up on the offer," Naruto grinned and threw out the rest of his Pokéballs.

Five pairs of curious eyes were instantly trained on him even as Riolu yawned and Toxtricity slouched forwards.

"All right, guys," Naruto said while Chiyo wandered back into the house, "while Hattrem teaches Mimikyu a new move, we'll be continuing our own training! Let's see, how will we split up this time?"

He pondered it for a moment before he made a decision. "Okay, Riolu, how about you train with Pidgeotto for now? Toxtricity, you train with Vulpix and Vaporeon."

One of Riolu's natural weaknesses was the Flying Type, so him training with Pidgeotto would be good to prepare him in case he ever found himself battling a Flying Type. Vaporeon was naturally weak against Electric, so him training with Toxtricity made sense. Vulpix' weakness was water, of course, so pairing her up with Vaporeon was logical and almost second nature by now. Her Fire attacks could do some regular damage to Toxtricity as well, so it wasn't as if Toxtricity would have that much of an easy time either.

Like this they spent the next two days at Chiyo's house. While Hattrem taught Mimikyu how to use Dazzling Gleam, the rest of them trained with each other, careful not to destroy anything in Chiyo's garden. Even though the elderly lady had scoffed and said not to mind, just train like they usually did, Naruto still was careful. They were training in someone's garden, not somewhere in an open field or a forest and so he tried to keep the damage to the absolute minimum, locating his Pokémon to the forest part whenever he told them to use moves that might leave more visible damage behind.

The sudden unexpected bright glittering gleam that cut through the dusk settling in on the evening of the second day alerted everyone to the fact that Mimikyu had successfully acquired a new move. In fact, the gleam of the attack was so bright Naruto had to blink rapidly for a moment, rubbing his eyes before his vision was back to normal, only a couple of black spots floating around still.

"Mimikyu, you did it!" he called out enthusiastically and opened his arms.

He was careful to remain a fair distance from Hattrem, however, not wanting to set her off with his emotions, but Mimikyu had no such qualms, instantly rushing over to him, practically bounding over the grass before he threw himself in Naruto's arms.

"Mimikyu, Mimi, Mimi? Mimikyu!" See it? I did it!

"You definitely did!" Naruto agreed enthusiastically and hugged Mimikyu, feeling cool shadowy tendrils wrapping around his arms in return. "You did such an amazing job! And you learnt the move so quickly too!"

"Riolu, Riolu," Riolu scoffed, crossing his arms. Two days.

Mimikyu's eyes flashed dangerously. "Mimi, Mimi! Mimikyu, Mimi?" Learnt a new move. You?

Riolu stiffened, his ears flying up, and Naruto hastily intervened before an actual argument could start. "Okay, let's all calm down, hm? You all did a great job these past couple of days during your training and you all improved loads! I'm proud of you all!"

Riolu still stuck his nose in the air, but at least he no longer seemed intent on antagonising Mimikyu.

After Vaporeon doused Vulpix' last fire attack, they all made their way back inside, where Chiyo was sitting in a rocking chair in the kitchen, several pots cooking and broiling on the stove. Hattrem was seated on her lap, enjoying the careful petting her Trainer was bestowing on her.

"Done with training?" she asked rhetorically, snorting when Vulpix shook out her fur, making her tails waggle.

"We are," Naruto confirmed, putting Mimikyu on the floor. "Mimikyu finished learning Dazzling Gleam, so I'm thinking that we can continue our journey tomorrow morning."

She nodded, rocking slowly back and forth. "Sounds like a good plan to me. If you don't mind a hint, the next Gym you're about to tackle focuses on Psychic Types. Mimikyu especially will do just fine in this one. He knows some Ghost attacks, correct?"

"He does," he confirmed and at her gesture started filling the plates and the bowls for the Pokémon with their dinner. "Two so far."

"Two? Shadow Sneak and?"

"Shadow Ball."

"Interesting," she murmured. "You've got quite the interesting Mimikyu there."

"I know," he chuckled and began dividing the bowls. "All right, no arguing, there's enough for everyone."

When he sat down at the table, leaving his Pokémon to enjoy their dinner, Chiyo leant forwards slightly. Hattrem looked up at her before simply grabbing her own bowl and elegantly slipping off her lap, drifting out of the room to eat elsewhere.

"The next town is in the south, so there should be no reason for you to make a detour, but just in case, don't go towards the west," Chiyo said grimly.

Naruto paused, his chopsticks hovering in the air. "Tyranitar hasn't been caught yet?" he guessed warily.

She shook her head. "Not yet. They are closing in on him, but it's best if you keep away from the west for now."

"Well, if the next town is in the south, we've got no reason to go in that direction," he reassured her.

"Good," she said brusquely and stood up, leaning heavily on her cane. "The last thing I need is Tsunade whining my ears off because you were dumb enough to get caught in the crosshairs," she scoffed and shuffled out of the kitchen. "Just let the dishes dry on the counter. Don't bother with putting everything away."

He hummed in understanding, knowing by now that there was no point in arguing otherwise. She was even more stubborn than him and that was saying something!

As he continued to eat, he took his Pokédex from his bag and checked the map, his eyebrows lifting up when he realised how close the other town was.

"Looks like we can make it to the next town in two days even if we keep up the training," he announced cheerfully and got a series of grunts and chirps in return, making him grin.

The Tyranitar still roaming around was worrisome, but he wasn't going to keep brooding about that. He would just have to trust that Tsunade and her team knew what they were doing. His objective was to get to the next town and get the next badge!

Perhaps it had been naïve of him to assume that his team would always get along. Sure, there was the occasional argument or squabble when one of them turned a bit too sassy for the others' liking, but so far there hadn't been any real conflict or fight.

He'd been lulled into a false state of ease, he acknowledged with growing dismay as the argument between Riolu and Mimikyu grew worse by the second.

They had stopped to train for a bit. The plan was simple: train for the rest of the afternoon, spend the night in the tent and then tomorrow somewhere in the morning they would arrive in the next town. There they could then take on the next Gym. Easy, really. A simple plan, but a plan that had worked so far.

But then a wild Mankey had suddenly thrown himself into the middle of their makeshift battleground, screeching loudly, and Naruto had ordered Mimikyu to use Dazzling Gleam on him. Fighting Types were weak against Fairy Types and Naruto had wanted to see the move in action before they would battle a Trainer with a Fighting Type.

Mimikyu had certainly not disappointed. His Dazzling Gleam was well, literally as dazzling as it was called, nearly blinding them all with its sparkling sheen. Mankey hadn't stood a chance. Even as furious and eager for a fight as he had been, the attack had hit him full on, leaving him nothing but a twitching, unconscious mess.

Right as Naruto had been about to throw out a Pokéball, eager to catch a new Pokémon – in the traditional manner this time! – Riolu had lashed out completely out of the blue.

"Riolu, Riolu, Riolu!" Acting like you're better than me!

"Mimikyu, Mimi, Mimi!" Not my fault you can't grow stronger!

Pidgeotto, Vaporeon, Vulpix and Toxtricity halted their own training, staring in bemusement at the two arguing Pokémon. Toxtricity's lips twitched as if he wanted to laugh, but he was frowning as well, stalking around the two of them. Pidgeotto flapped his wings in agitation, sending off a minor Gust in warning, but that didn't deter Riolu from raising his voice.

"Riolu, Riolu, Riolu!" Am growing stronger! You cheating!

"Mimi?! Mimikyu, Mimi, Mimikyu, Mimi! Mimikyu, Mimikyu!" Am not! Learnt the move fairly! Not my fault she can't teach you!

"Vulpix, Vulpix, Vulpix!" Quit it, both of you!

Vaporeon chittered nervously, his back low and hollow as he slunk through the field. Don't fight, please.

"How about we all take a deep breath and calm down?" Naruto suggested, frowning. "What is it with you two all of a sudden? Riolu, you can't be mad at Mimikyu simply because he learnt a new move. You'll learn plenty of new moves soon as well!"

"Mimi, Mimikyu, Mimi!" was Mimikyu's rather snide remark. Not if he acts like this!

"Mimikyu, don't antagonise him," Naruto warned him, but it was too late.

With a furious yell, Riolu threw a rock at Mimikyu, which was neatly deflected by Toxtricity's hand slapping it off course.

"Riolu! We don't throw – Wait, Riolu, come back!"

Naruto's burst of anger quickly made way for worry when Riolu shot away, running deeper into the forest. "You stay here, I'm going after him!" Naruto shouted at the others before running after Riolu.

Even though Riolu was classified as a Baby Pokémon, he definitely did not have the stamina of one. He was quickly gaining speed, putting more and more distance between him and Naruto, and Naruto remembered his Pokédex entry too late. Swearing, he tried to regulate his breathing as best as he could, while dodging branches and jumping over roots and small bushes, desperate to keep Riolu in his sight before he lost him completely.

"Riolu, stop! There's no need to run away! Mimikyu didn't mean it like that!" he called out, because he knew Mimikyu was already regretting that comment.

Mimikyu wasn't a mean Pokémon, in spite of what a lot of people liked to think. He had just blurted something out in the heat of the moment. Had it been nice? No, but Mimikyu had been angry and upset. Just as upset as Riolu was.

Naruto had thought Riolu's drive to grow stronger was admirable, but he had misjudged just how focused the Baby Pokémon was on gaining levels. He had seen Mimikyu learning a new move while he hadn't learnt a new move in a while and that had apparently stung. To Naruto it didn't matter when his Pokémon would learn new moves; they would get their at their own pace, in their own time. But Riolu loved training, loved becoming stronger, and now his pride was hurt.

"Riolu, please stop!"

They were running up a hill and Naruto was definitely feeling the strain in his legs, both from the steepness of the hill and the amount of running he had already done. His legs burned and felt heavy as lead, but he pushed on, gasping for air when he stumbled onto the top of the hill, spotting Riolu a bit further away.

Riolu had his hands clenched at his sides and was trembling all over, his shoulders hunched.

"Hey," Naruto said softly and held his breath when Riolu slowly turned around.

Riolu's eyes were brimming with tears, but whether they came from being upset or from anger was anyone's guess. Slowly Naruto walked over to him and lowered himself down on the ground.

"I know you want to get stronger," he began softly and Riolu's shoulders hunched even more. "And that is really admirable, but I want you to know that it doesn't matter to me how quickly you level up or how fast you learn new moves, okay? We can do it all on your own pace."

"Riolu, Riolu, Riolu." Just want to get stronger.

"I know and you're going to get there," Naruto encouraged him. "Every time you train, you get stronger. It's just that the stronger you become, the longer it takes to gain new levels. That's just how it is. You're already catching up to the others quickly and I bet you're going to learn a new move soon! And when you do, you can show it off to the others."

Riolu gnawed on his lower lip. "Riolu, Riolu," he said in a small voice. Didn't mean to run away.

"I know you didn't," Naruto said and gently bumped his fists against Riolu's left one. "You were just upset, it's all right. Next time, though, let's stay at the camp and talk things out before we go running half a marathon, hm?" he smiled wryly.

Riolu looked up, the start of a smile tugging at his mouth, before they both tensed up when loud crashing noises startled the nearby Spearow into silence. They turned to their left where the hill descended into a low slope when the crashing noises rapidly came closer. A blood curling scream tore through the air, making Naruto and Riolu slam their hands over their ears.

A shock went through Naruto when the cause of the scream came into view, making a direct beeline for them.

Tyranitar.

A regular Tyranitar was already scary enough, but one that had lost all his senses and wanted nothing more than to maim anything in his sight? Utterly terrifying.

Tyranitar's eyes seemed to glow red when they landed on Riolu and he charged immediately at Riolu, releasing a thunderous roar that shook the earth, unbalancing both Naruto and Riolu. Tyranitar lowered himself almost completely to the ground, charging like a bull with the giant spike on his head aimed straight forwards.

"Riolu, watch out!" Naruto cried out and pulled Riolu out of Tyranitar's path.

Tyranitar came to an abrupt stop, making the ground shake violently again when he stamped furiously. Naruto and Riolu each dove to one side as Tyranitar charged forwards again and Naruto tried to think of what they could possibly do to escape his rampage. Run away? Tyranitar might not have the speed of a Rapidash, but given his state of mind currently, Naruto had no doubt whatsoever that Tyranitar would catch up to them before they could even get down the hill.

They could do nothing but dive and roll out of the way, the whole world spinning around them as Tyranitar didn't let up for one second, charging after them again and again, leaving deep holes behind in the ground from where his feet dug grooves. He didn't let them catch their breath or even give them a second to think, aiming for them again and again.

Right as Naruto made the absolute insane decision to start making a run for it after all in the hopes of leading Tyranitar away, Tyranitar suddenly stopped as if transfixed by something. He stared in the direction of the trees as if looking at something, but when Naruto quickly glanced, he couldn't spot anything out of the ordinary. There were no people there, no Pokémon, all of them having fled when Tyranitar had burst out of the trees.

Yet something kept Tyranitar eerily quiet all of a sudden, his glowing eyes staring at something only he could see.

This might be their only chance.

Naruto carefully caught Riolu's attention and gestured at the side of the hill behind Tyranitar, indicating they should get down the hill that way. Whatever was keeping Tyranitar's attention was good at it, keeping the Pokémon as still as a statue, and carefully but quickly both Naruto and Riolu started creeping towards the other side of the hill.

Naruto was almost there, Riolu close behind him when Tyranitar unexpectedly roared.

His voice was stained with such fury, igniting a terror Naruto hadn't experienced in years. Everything that happened next seemed to happen in slow motion.

He saw Tyranitar whirling around, aiming straight for Riolu who was closest to him. There were Pokémon running out of the forest and coming towards the hill, but they wouldn't get here in time to stop Tyranitar, let alone attempt to distract him.

So Naruto reacted instinctively.

He jumped forwards and pushed Riolu out of the way.

Suddenly he was airborne, the wind howling around his disoriented head, and then he was flung down, smacking down onto the ground hard. All the air immediately exploded out of his lungs, but when he tried to gasp for air, he couldn't. Something tight was restricting his lungs, making it near impossible to breathe and he tried to sit up.

His stomach protested so fiercely, his vision momentarily blacked out. When he could look again, everything was blurry and dazed he touched his stomach, wondering if catching Tyranitar's head straight on would leave him with a massive bruise.

His stomach was wet.

Blankly he looked down, seeing red. Red that was dripped steadily out of the hole in his stomach. There was – oh, was that – that was blood, huh. Blood, because the hole in – he must have caught Tyranitar's horn straight on, which had gouged him right in –

Was that why his vision was becoming so blurry? Shouldn't he feel pain now? Should he feel this light-headed?

Should he – he really should – Tyranitar was still here, could still hurt –

The world's spinning funnily, he mused. Was his body lying down or was the earth moving up? He couldn't quite tell, except that he was really starting to hurt now, quite a lot, but he couldn't give in, couldn't give up because, because –

Everything turned dark.
