PREFACE

Rinsing the remaining significant blood from the cold, hard steel table, Luna watched as the water mixed with bright red blood, diluting it to pink. It continued its path, swirling down the drain located underneath the table. It was hard to believe that all of humanity revolved around this gift of life, something that was spilled and then washed away.

Shutting off the water and watching the last bit of water make its journey through the grooves, Luna's mind drifted back to her life six months prior. She had finished her residency at Baylor Medical University, eagerly waiting to hear back from John Hopkins Medical School. The dreams of becoming a renowned cardiovascular surgeon seemed within reach. But the letter from John Hopkins had shattered those dreams, plunging her into a whirlwind of confusion and despair. It was as if the world had turned its back on her, rendering her skills and aspirations meaningless.

As Luna cleaned the remnants of death from the table, a mixture of frustration and resignation welled up inside her. The accident that had brought her to this moment seemed like a cruel twist of fate, an ironic reminder of the fragility of life. She couldn't help but wonder if there was a purpose to her survival, a reason she had been chosen to bear the weight of Death's mantle.

The room was bathed in the sterile glow of overhead lights, casting an eerie reflection on the table. Luna's gaze lingered on the surface, her mind flooded with a mix of memories and uncertainties. The transformative moment that had altered the course of her existence replayed in her mind, the sensation of awakening on a morgue table overpowering her senses.

Now that my dreams lay six feet under, I've come to accept my new reality. The medical examiner who happened to be filling in that night, Dr. Gibbons, saw something in me. I may not have considered myself special, but he recognized a spark within, enough to reach out and bring back my soul. I remember the light, the ethereal voices, the vibrant colors. And when he beckoned me, I followed, driven by an instinct that told me I still had unfinished business, a destiny yet to be fulfilled.

When I regained consciousness, I found myself lying on that cold, hard steel table, still clad in my blood-stained clothes. My body ached, and my head throbbed as I gingerly swung my legs over the edge and let my feet touch the floor. It was a relief to discover that I hadn't broken any bones, although every movement sent jolts of protest through my weary form.

Taking a deep breath to steady myself, I surveyed the room, my gaze settling on Dr. Gibbons. He was a quiet man with graying hair, and a few wrinkles etched around his aging eyes. I hadn't known him by name, but his presence was familiar from my time in the morgue. Little did I realize then that he had been temporarily filling in while the city hired additional doctors. That information would come later.

With another sigh, I stepped away from the table, not releasing my grip as my body adjusted to the strain of movement. It was time to seek answers, no more procrastination. Dr. Gibbons remained silent.

As Luna began to question Dr. Gibbons about her circumstances, she couldn't help but feel a mix of confusion and curiosity. How was it possible for him to bring her soul back when he appeared to be in a similar state of existence? She had been under the impression that she was now the Grim Reaper, tasked with guiding souls to the afterlife. Yet, here was Dr. Gibbons, seemingly capable of manipulating the boundaries between life and death.

Dr. Gibbons, with his calm demeanor, met Luna's gaze and began to explain the unique nature of their situation. He revealed that he, too, had once been a mortal, caught in the cycle of life and death. However, through ancient rituals and profound knowledge acquired over countless years, he discovered a way to transcend the limitations of mortality.

He had delved into forbidden arts, ancient rituals, and the study of arcane texts, seeking to understand the mysteries of life and death. Through his relentless pursuit of knowledge and the secrets hidden in the realms beyond, he had unlocked a power that allowed him to manipulate the fabric of existence itself.

Dr. Gibbons had come to possess a deep understanding of the delicate balance between life and death. Through his mastery, he could manipulate the energy that flowed through the universe, tapping into the essence of souls and their connection to the mortal plane. It was this profound mastery that enabled him to reach out and bring Luna's soul back from the brink of the afterlife.

As Luna listened to his explanation, a mixture of awe and apprehension washed over her. She realized that her encounter with Dr. Gibbons was no mere coincidence. Fate had brought them together, two souls intertwined by a shared destiny. While she had become the new embodiment of Death, tasked with guiding souls, Dr. Gibbons had become something more. He had become a guardian, a keeper of the balance, and a mentor to Luna in her new role.

Together, Luna and Dr. Gibbons would navigate the intricate web of life and death, uncovering the secrets hidden within their own existence and facing the challenges that awaited them. Bound by a shared purpose and an understanding of the extraordinary, their journey would shape not only their own destinies but also the very fabric of the worlds they inhabited.

As I stand here, fresh blood stains mingling with the memories of my former life, I can't help but marvel at the twists and turns that brought me here. I've shed my old self, and my old aspirations, and embraced a purpose far grander than I could have ever imagined. And amidst it all, a calmness settles within me—a calmness born from the acceptance, inner strength, and the knowledge that I have a unique role to play in the cosmic tapestry of life and death.

And so, here I am, straddling the realm of the living and the dead. I exist, or rather, don't quite exist, with a pulse so faint it's almost imperceptible. I am undead, a vessel for the role of Death itself, tasked with guiding souls and maintaining the delicate balance between life and its inevitable end.
