A lone soldier made his way through the halls of Atlas. He walked quickly and held some important looking papers. Once he found the door he was looking for, he knocked before entering the room. Sitting at her desk, a women was filling out paperwork. She wore the uniform of a Captain with the addition of white gloves. Looking up to see who had interrupted her, her icy blue eyes seemed to harden.
"Excuse me soldier, as you can see, I'm in the middle of something." Pausing what she was doing, she wore a frown on her face.
"I'm sorry for the intrusion Captain Dubos, but this important. It's related to your old team." Upon hearing this, Captain Dubos put her pend down and gave the soldier her full attention.
"Is that so? Very well, continue." Standing up straight, the solider relayed the information he was given.
"Last night, the body of your old teammate, Danial Lattke, was found in an alleyway. Next to him was the body of a man identified as Mark Baran." Crossing her legs, the Captain put a hand to her chin in thought. "Mark Baran suffered blunt force trauma to the back of his skull. It's believed that he died upon impact. As for Danial Lattke, he suffered from many lacerations. What ultimately killed him however was an injury to his heart." Pushing off her desk, the Captain stood up and walked over to the large window in her office. Holding her hands behind her back, she looked over Atlas as she spoke.
"Do the authorities in Vale know who's responsible?" While Captain Dubos had met Mark on a few occasions, she couldn't say that she knew the man well. Danial, on the other hand, she knew all too well. She knew for a fact that the washed-up Huntsman had many enemies.
"That leads me to the next part ma'am. That same night, Serafanda Hart passed away." Closing her eyes, Captain Dubos tightened her grip. Bowing her head, she grit her teeth. "It's believed that all three deaths are connected. There isn't any solid proof however, so the authorities wish to bring in their prime suspect." Speaking through grit teeth, Captain Dubos did her best to keep her composer.
"And just who that might be?" Feeling her heart quicken, Captain Dubos could feel her hands begin to tremor ever so slightly.
"As of now, the prime suspect for all three killings, is Umbra Hart." Whipping around, Captain Dubos' eyes widened.
"What!? Umbra!? Are you certain!? That… That can't possibly be true!" Holding a gloved hand to her chin she began to pace.
"I'm sorry to say that it is true ma'am. On her bedside table was an empty vile. He was the last person caught on camera entering and leaving her room before she was found dead. Until her autopsy is complete and the toxicology report comes back, it can't be for certain. It's also likely that she had died of her injuries in the night." Still pacing, Captain Dubos was lost in thought. She barely heard what the soldier was saying. "With Umbra Hart as the prime suspect in all three killings, a warrant for his arrest will be broadcast to every Kingdom. In order to link Umbra to the killings of Mark Baran and Danial Lattke, a confession will be needed as there wasn't any evidence present at the scene of their deaths." Stopping in the middle of the room, Captain Dubos closed her eyes.
"I need to think everything you've told me over. You're dismissed, soldier." With a quick 'Yes ma'am.' the solider left. Now alone, Captain Dubos tried to make sense of things. If what she was told was true, she wanted to be the one to bring Umbra in. Before that though, she wanted to make a trip. She wanted to… confirm something. Opening her eyes, the Captain walked back over to the window. Putting a hand on the window, she looked up towards the sky. "Even after running so far, it would seem that I'm unable to escape the past…" She spoke to herself barely above a whisper. "Umbra… Just what have you done?"
Umbra Hart
"Go on… Do it…" Looking up at the Faunus currently holding a gun to his head, Umbra knew there was no way out of his current situation. "You'll be doing the world a favor. Maybe me as well…"Hanging his head, Umbra was beginning to grow annoyed. "If you want me to beg, forget it. Just pull the damn trigger already." Closing his eyes, Umbra was resigned to his fate. Just the day before, he had lost all hope of ever escaping Mt. Glenn. Since stepping foot in the city, he knew something was amiss. The lack of Grimm made him uneasy. Umbra could never have guessed that the White Fang had moved in and evicted the Grimm. A particularly sadistic group at that…
Hearing two loud bangs, Umbra was confused when he didn't feel either bullets hit him. Opening his eyes, he saw that the Faunus charged with killing him had turned on his friends instead. Quickly holstering the Handgun, he moved over to Umbra. Taking Solar Eclipse, Umbra's Tanto, out from the chair, the Faunus cut Umbra's bindings. Rubbing his wrists, Umbra looked up at the Faunus with confusion.
"If you want to get out of here alive, you must listen to me." Handing Umbra Solar Eclipse, the Faunus moved over to the door. Checking to see if anyone heard the gunshots, he kept speaking. "Once you exit this room, you can go in three directions. Head straight. Once you reach the end of the hall, take a left. At the end of that hall is a green door." He looked back at Umbra. "In there, you'll find anything that was taken from you." Still confused, Umbra couldn't understand what could've given this particular member of the White Fang a change of heart.
"Why did you save me? Why are you helping me? Aren't you friends with these people?" To Umbra, it just didn't make any sense. Looking out into the hall again, the Faunus took a moment to think. Once he had his answer, he looked back at Umbra.
"Long ago, when I first joined the White Fang, it was to help create peace between Faunus and Humans. Not… this…" Averting Umbra's gaze, the Faunus looked down. "I've had it with this 'war'. All this senseless killing… It's not getting us anywhere… It's not helping bring about true peace." Regaining his courage, the Faunus looked back up at Umbra. "These people are no friends of mine. At least… not anymore." Opening the double doors, the Faunus got ready to leave. Before that, he said one last thing. "Once you've gathered your things, I suggest that you leave and never return here. Good luck, Human." Giving Umbra a nod, he left.
Walking up to one of the guards, Umbra retrieved Solar Eclipses sheathe. Attaching it to his belt, Umbra got ready to leave. Giving the hallway a quick look, he slipped out of the room when he saw that the coast was clear. Holding Solar Eclipse in a reverse grip, he snuck through the halls. Doing as the Faunus said, he went straight. Along the way he made sure to look over his shoulder every so often. Hearing the sounds of approaching footsteps he ducked into a nearby room. It was just a small supply closet, so maneuverability would be limited if they decided to do peek inside.
Listening and waiting for the White Fang members to pass, Umbra could feel his heart race. Holding Solar Eclipse tight he prepared himself for a possible confrontation. In time they passed and Umbra let out a sigh of relief. Giving it a bit longer, he peeked the door before exiting out into the hallway. With the coast now clear, he continued down the hallway. Upon reaching the end, he went left. Just as the Faunus had said, a green door awaited Umbra at the end of the hall.
Reaching out towards the handle, Umbra jumped back in surprise when the door opened on it's own. Stepping out of the room, a White Fang member towered over Umbra. Locking eyes with Umbra, the giant sneered. Grabbing onto Umbra's neck with one hand, he threw Umbra back into the room.
Crashing into some boxes, Umbra felt the wind get knocked out of him. Not having anytime to properly recover, the giant swung his weapon down towards Umbra. Rolling out of the way, Umbra stood up and got a better look at his opponents weapon. It was an Ebony Katana with purple colored ivy climbing up its sides. There was no mistaking it, it was Lunar Eclipse. Tightening the grip on his own weapon, Umbra growled.
"You bastard…" Crouching down low, Umbra got ready to charge forward. "Even if I have to chop your hands off, I'm getting that sword back!" Rushing in towards his opponent, Umbra made sure to stay low. Making his enemy think he was going to attack from the right, Umbra ducked under his enemies swing and moved to the left at the last moment. Slashing as he moved past the Faunus Umbra got the first real hit in.
Quickly turning around Umbra went in for a second attack. While the Faunus was larger and stronger, Umbra had the obvious advantage in speed. No matter how many times they swung at Umbra, he was able to dodge everyone of his attacks. Getting frustrated, the Faunus let out a yell and charged Umbra. Holding his arms out, he crashed into Umbra. The blow was strong enough to send Umbra flying into a rack of weapons. Clattering to the floor in front of him was his weapon Ignition. Ignition was a fairly normal looking Broadsword. Unlike most other weapons that people wielded, it couldn't transform into a gun. However, it did have at least one trick up its sleeve…
Scooping up Ignition, Umbra got back up on his feet. Clearly having enough, the Faunus decided to use a new tactic. Punching upwards, he destroyed the only light source in the room. This would cause the tide of the battle to change in favor of the Faunus. Revving up Ignition, Umbra coated his weapon in flames. The room lit back up, but not by much.
Going on the defensive, Umbra waited for the Faunus to make the first move. Tensing up, Umbra scanned back and forth, waiting for his opponent to jump out of the dark towards him. Each second that ticked by frayed at Umbra's nerves. After what felt like an eternity, the Faunus leapt out at Umbra. Umbra didn't have enough time to react, and received a kick to the gut. Slamming into something, Umbra wasn't able to recover before his opponent was upon him once more. Grabbing Umbra by the neck, the Faunus slammed Umbra back into whatever was behind him. After three hits, whatever was behind Umbra gave way. Together, Umbra and the Faunus took a tumble. The object Umbra was being slammed against was a door, and when it gave way, the two of them landed in a new room that was flooded.
Sputtering as he stood up, Umbra got some distance between him and the Faunus. Ignition was soaked, and it would no longer be able to ignite. Standing in the knee high water, Umbra waited and listened for the Faunus to start moving. With all the water, he wouldn't be able to move so quietly anymore. Hearing his opponent splashing around, Umbra moved in. He wasn't going to allow his enemy to make the first move anymore. When he got close, Umbra slashed at the Faunus. His attack missed and he was knocked off his feet. Submerged once again, Umbra tried to get back up.
Umbra only got a few seconds of air before he felt a pair of hands wrap around his neck. Getting shoved back under, the Faunus was trying to drown Umbra. Panicking, Umbra kicked at the Faunus. When that didn't work, he tried prying the Faunus' hands off his neck. It was futile, the Faunus was much stronger than Umbra was. As a last ditch effort, he scratched at the Faunus' face. Fear was beginning to build, and as time went on, Umbra began to believe that this was it. He was going to die in Mt. Glenn. Eliza would get away with her crimes, and he would never be able to keep his promise to his mother.
As he was slowly starting to black out, Umbra felt something inside him change. Something felt… different. Without even thinking, Umbra moved on instinct alone. Suddenly, he was out of the Faunus' grasp and was standing up. Not only that, but he could see just fine in the pitch black. Looking down at his hands, he hadn't noticed that he had dropped Ignition. Moving on autopilot, Umbra picked his sword back up. Swinging it downwards, he felt himself shift between realities. His vision was gone and once again everything was dark. That hardly mattered, as his blade was nearly upon the Faunus when he shifted.
After hitting the Faunus with his blade, Umbra shifted back into the other realty. When he did so, his body began to itch and hurt all over. As he was in a life or death situation, that hardly mattered to him. Popping in and out of both realities, Umbra began to wear down the Faunus. Soon enough, he broke his enemies Aura. With one final slash, he ended the battle. The White Fang members body fell backwards and a loud splash resonated throughout the room.
Panting, Umbra sheathed Ignition. Looking down at his hands, he shifted realities a few times. This was it. His Semblance. If he had access to his Semblance a few years prior, maybe things would have played out differently… Done playing around with his Semblance, Umbra retrieved Lunar Eclipse and its sheathe from the dead Faunus. Fastening it to his waist, he made sure it was on tight and wouldn't come loose. Soaking wet, tired and in pain, Umbra was finally ready to leave Mt. Glenn behind. Getting ready for one last trip into the world of shadows, Umbra couldn't wait to leave this horrible place.
