By the time she died, Lady Laenna Flowers had been known by many names. The whore in the North, the turncoat lady, the ugliest bitch to have stolen so many men, the mad seer, the screamer, and the Lannister dog.
But her names barely encompassed the complexities of her life.
She wasn't actually born a bastard. That stain only came later in life.
She was born simple minded though and this made her father and her mother of House Kyndall, who could only have dead babies, very angry with little Laenna. Since they needed an male heir to revive and keep alive their dying title.
She remembers little from those days as they had never been truly happy, she only remembers wandering in the beautiful fields of the Westerlands, her strict Septa hitting her every time she made a mistake, and picking wildflowers.
So when Laenna turned seven, she had been sent from her home and house, to a friend of her mother, to be raised and fostered, which was common practice at the time. It had been requested by Lady Joanna Lannister though, her mother's childhood friend. That was not common to be sent to a paramount when you are of a minor house. The Lady Joanna Lannister, who also happened to be the wife of the hand of the king, Twyin, was to be her foster and she felt anxious to please and terrified to fail.
Her father, mother and septa made sure she promised to be quiet as possible unless spoken to.
When she was getting into the carriage to go, her mother gripped her hand tightly and whispered to her.
"A Lannister always pays their debts my dear, good and bad both. So never let your guard down. The lady may be my friend, and I do not know why she asked for you, but Tywin is a ruthless hand who won't hesitate to smack."
"But why is he like that, mother," she replied in response.
"Because he can be. So never not be afraid." With that the carriage slammed close and her whole world grew bigger.
When the horses and the carriage finally reached Casterly Rock, she could weep of her tiredness and sore bum. She was so tired and yet had not slept once on the journey out of the tightening of her stomach and the knots her body conjured.
Finally though as she climbed out, she was greeted by none other than her absolutely beautiful mistress, who she struggled to bow to. But it did not seem to matter as the lady gave her a kiss on the head.
Saying, "Welcome, my dear. How was the journey?"
To which I replied without thought, "Horrid my lady, I can't feel my arse."
To which prompted her to great laughter.
"Oh my word, your as funny as Tyra said you'd be."
After that, she was bathed rather harshly by the scolding maids who reminded her she was too crass for her age, and put to bed.
The next day, she was escorted to join breakfast and that's when she swore, she met the two most beautiful people in all of Westeros, Jaime and Cersei Lannister. They were only a year older than her.
"Good Morrow my ladies and my lord," she said, to which only Joanna greeted back and Jaime acknowledged by snorting and jokingly copied, "my lord." Cersei did nothing but give her a glare though.
Other than that though, they ate breakfast in silence. But Laenna could not keep her eyes off Jaime, and when he noticed her relentless stare. She quickly looked away with a blush to avoid his green eyes.
They mostly ignored her the entire breakfast but for a snide comment made by Cersei regarding her chubby arms, which Joanna quickly chided Cersei for.
She never forgot that comment because soon after breakfast as they were leaving for lessons, Cersei came up to her and pinched her arms and whispered cruelly, "fat like a pig for the slaughter," and then ran off laughing.
As the days passed, she became Cersei's favorite plaything, sometimes treated as a jester, but mostly as a whipping girl. Nobody came to her defense. Cersei called her ugly and simple and a coward and dared her to jump off the cliffs of Casterly Rock. But the thing that hurt the most was when she grabbed her by her hair in a tight fist and said, "Stay away from Jaime, he'd never like you anyway," and pulled out a single strand of her hair to just make her cry more.
Laenna felt compelled to listen as she feared for her life.
Then, one day, Lord Tywin Lannister returned and she could barely move in front of him. She could see why her mother warned her against him. But when he noticed her, she gave him a flower she put behind her ear and a huge smile none the less.
"Welcome home, my Lord," she replied.
He said nothing but gave her a look longer than she thought he should look before going to greet his twins and then going to Lady Joanna with something resembling a small smile.
But there was even more fear and uncertainty than this big lion could cause when she learnt on a hot summer day from her septa that her mother died from childbed fever and that she was to have no new brother.
So aggrieved was she that she ran and leaped off the cliffs of Casterly Rock into the sea. She was finally fished out by some workers after falling under the waves, and so cold was she that she gained a fever, but she survived.
Joanna made her a close maidservant after this event, likely out of kindness and worry, possibly because she felt she owed a debt to her mother, and kept her as close as a shadow to her. For some reason, she seemed to cling to Laenna like she wanted to be her mother, and like she had a duty now to mother her in her dead mother's place.
Her father never called back for her though. He just got remarried. But the curse of childlessness still plagued her house.
Laenna found herself one day with Joanna brushing her hair, taking over from a spluttering maid, before she tried to give what she assumed would be comforting advice.
"You must not grieve your mother so or you will become ill again, Laenna."
"I grieve more the fact she never loved me, my lady."
"That's not true"
"It is, my lady, she thought me a lackwit and wished for another child to replace me."
At first, she was silent.
"It's a terrifying world, dear heart. I simply think she wanted to toughen you up to survive it."
There was no more talk as she brushed Laenna's thin brown hair and gave her a small braid.
All this also gave her a respite from Cersei. All this changed though with the pregnancy of Joanna. Who would soon perish birthing Tyrion, who was absolutely abhorred by Twyin for being a dwarf and killing the only one who ever made him smile.
The funeral was terrible and she felt like sobbing constantly. She had lost the only mother who she had ever truly felt loved by.
At first, the grief of losing her mother figure who kept her safe from bullying made her hate and avoid Tyrion too. But the moment she saw Jaime hold him, she felt intense guilt for her evil beliefs.
So she started comforting Tyrion, playing with him, and holding him. She essentially became his playmate and would visit him anytime Jaime wasn't there. Out of fear she would blush red like a tomato and of course out of fear of Cersei.
"Sorry, ser Jaime," she always said when she noticed his presence and put his brother down and ran out.
Once he grabbed her and asked, "Stop saying sorry so much, its annoying." To which she only bolted to her room after ripping herself from him.
Tyrion very soon became her only friend and companion. She felt for some reason that he was her child and she must kept him safe, because he clung to her and always seemed to quiet when she was with him. She pitied his pain as much as she pitied her own.
"I know we're both unwanted, but I'm here for you," she would tell him over and over again, cuddling him.
Unknowingly, this phrase probably helped keep her alive.
As the years passed, Tyrion was always by her side, and it always felt like he was smarter and braver than her despite Laenna being almost seven years older than him.
At the age of fourteen, Cersei left for Kingslanding and the year after, fifteen year old Jaime followed Cersei to become a knight for King Aerys. He never looked back at her on his horse as he left and this for some reason broke little fourteen year old Leana's heart.
Everything was relatively calm until it all went to shit after this when one day, she was invited to a tourney that would change everything.
