"Are we acting to rashly."
The king asked his wife and queen as he looked out of their window and down onto the training grounds behind the castle. The sun had begun to set but a number of the knight remained outside. Going through drills, keeping themselves distracted from what may be on the horizon. Arthur wished be could join them, but he knew that it wouldn't do him any good. There was no way to quite his mind. The hundreds of possibilities played out, even when his eyes were open. He had gone through what was left of the day doing what was expected of him. He spoke further with Morgana, just the two of them. When there was not a group around them Morgana seemed to be less combative. He understood why she may feel the way she did, but he couldn't afford not to push past that. There was to much at stack. For both of them. They had parted company to rest for the night on better terms than they had begun their discussion, which pleased them both as much as they were relived by it.
He waited for a answer to his question. Not getting one he was about to turn around, when he felt a pair of arms slip around his chest from behind and what he was sure was a head come to rest in the space between his shoulders blades as the arms pulled him in a little closer. Lifting his own arms he placed them over Gwen's.
"We can't afford to do nothing." Her voice was slightly muffled, but he heard her clearly.
Arthur took in a deep breath as he turned to face Gwen. Her arms still around his chest he draped his around her shoulders as he kissed her forehead.
"We can't afford to rush into a war either, if we don't have to." He said over her head.
Gwen hugged her husband tighter. She hated that he had to go through this. While he was surrounded by people that were willing to help, people he could trust and rely on. Arthur would still carry the weight of what was going to happen himself. She had hoped that once they were married he would let her help him carry this burden. That did not seem to be the case. He talked more with her about the issues he dealt with as king. As she did the same with her own duties. He however seemed to speak to her as a way to voice all his thoughts. He did listen to what she said, but he didn't seem to take much of it in. Gwen had believed that he did this as he didn't want to burden her. That he wanted to keep their relationship, the time they had when it was just the two of them, to keep all of that for them. To not let the world interfere as it already had so much before. Know the new queen was beginning to worry that Arthur didn't fully trust her, respect her or think she was smart enough to be able to contribute in a meaningful way. It was childish and needy but she desperately needed him to reassure her that that was not the case.
"Do you think we have rushed to quickly into a possible war." She asked as she pulled back to look up at him.
She watched him in the diming light as he tried to think of the best way to answer. Thinking over each word he would say very carefully. Frustrated and angry that her husband was guarding, censoring what he said to her, his wife. He was meant to be able to saw anything to her and she was meant to do the same. Pulling back she looked him in the eye, ready to berate him for treating her like a helpless women that didn't understand the threat they may be facing. Meeting his eyes her words caught in her throat like day old bread. She would be a hypocrite if she said anything about withholding information.
It was far to early to tell for certain, but the new queen felt sure that she was with child. Something in her heart just told her that it was true. That she was no longer a single entity. That she carried another life within her. The truest and most ancient of all magic.
As sure as Gwen was about the fact of the pregnancy, she was unsure how she felt about it. Happy of course. It was the strongest emotion, the clearest that she felt, the longer she sat with the news the more other emotions clouded the waters. Gwen had always wanted many children. She had loved growing up with her little brother to play with and keep secrets and company, but she always wished for more siblings. Her Mothers death when she was still so young, probably around the age Gwen herself was now put an end to that hope. In realising that it was Arthur that she wished to share her life with this fact did not change but it became murkier. Any child she had with Arthur would not just be their child. It would be a child of Camelot. With a heavy burden placed on them from their first spark of life. The timing was also darkening the waters further. They could be on the precipice of war. Now was not a good time to bring a new life into this world. When things were so unclear. Arthur needed her to be strong and support him through what may come. Camelot needed her to be strong and calm to guide them forward. She did not have the time or energy to spare on anything else. Let alone the growing and protecting of a new life.
Until she was sure Gwen would not tell Arthur. There was to much going on right now. Selfishly when she did tell him she wanted him to be happy, excited. Arthur of course would be happy no matter when she told him, whatever else was going on, but she wanted him to be able to focus only on the child. To truly enjoy the excitement of what was to come as she had when she realised what changes where going on in her body. She wanted for their child to be the only thing they thought about. Not war. New life should not be overshadowed by death.
Through out the day the queen of Camelot began to worry that the visiting queen of Avalon had been able to tell her secret. Either be magic or just female intuition she didn't know. It didn't matter either way really. Morgana had stayed by her side for most of the rest of the day. Parting only when she spoke with her brother in private. She found a way to move first, stopping Gwen form pouting her a drink or offering her food first. Gwen was queen now and should not wait on Morgana any longer. This had been their dynamic for many years now and Gwen became accustomed to her now station in life. Now with the changes going on inside her Gwen viewed them differently. There was every chance that Morgana didn't knew or suspected nothing of her future niece or nephew and was just being a gracious guest, but the guilt of keeping something so important to herself was making her view others actions in a different way.
Seeing Gwen fight back her words, hold something back from him Arthur lifted his hand to gently cures her check. Something was troubling her, had been for longer than the possibility of war. He had waited for her to tell him what was going on, in her own time. She had always been open and honest with him. If she was keeping something from him, then he was sure she had a good reason. She just need a little time to think it over herself before she talked to him. She always spoke with him when she was ready. The few times he had tried to push her to open up before she was ready only resulted in her closing off from him. It was something he had noticed Morgana doing when she was not ready or willing to speak of something when they were younger. Arthur wondered if all women were like this and not just his wife and sister.
There had not been time for her to come to him this time. Looking in her dark eyes now he knew that she was conflicted. She wanted to talk to him, but didn't want to add to his burdens right now. This worried him, because it meant that there was something to worry about. If it was a trivial matter then she would simply tell him. She would not be looking at him with guilt in her eyes. With a soft smile he pulled her head towards him. Their lips touched tentatively at first.
With this simple action, One that they acted out many times a day, a kiss. Arthur told Gwen that he understood. That she was withholding something from him and felt guilty about it. That he also understood she would tell him when she felt ready, he wouldn't rush her. He knew, trusted that she would not keep something important from him unless she felt it was the right thing to do.
Her guilt growing stronger at her husbands loving gesture, Gwen moved to pull away before the kiss could grow into something else as it often did now they had no reason to restrain themselves anymore. Not now they were married.
Feeling her tense up in his arms and try and pull away, Arthur held her tighter, but still gently and deepened the kiss. It was not long before her willpower was gone. Gwen desperately wanted to be held by her husband, to be loved by her husband. So she stopped fighting herself and sank into his strong arms and returned his kiss, his love. As if she weighed almost nothing, He lifted her slightly off the ground as he moved them towards their bed.
There was nothing else that they needed to say. Not tonight anyway. They knew they loved each other. That they could trust each other and that they would always support each other. Other than that there was nothing they needed to say right now. So much was going on they needed this moment that was just theirs. Where time seemed to slow and they could catch their breath. Because who knew when they would have this chance again.
Morgana paced back and forth around her old chambers. Unable to sit still, but also unable to focus on anything properly for more than a few seconds. She knew what she had to do, but she was not defiantly not trilled by it so was putting it off for as long as she possible could. Distracting herself by looking over the room that had once been so familiar to her and now she felt like a guest in it. Like it no longer belonged to her anymore. Many of her dresses and jewelry where still where she left them. There was no layer of dust that she would have expected from the room being empty for a few months wasn't there. The maids must still be regularly cleaning it. Over the last few years every time she returned to Camelot she always expected to see her chambers showing signs of being abandoned or having been completely cleared out. So no sign of her remained. Every time she found she was wrong and a place for her always remained in Camelot. To her surprise and slight irritation she felt greatly touched by this.
Unable to put it off any longer now that the sun had fully set and the castle mostly slept or at least tried to, Morgana made her way to her freshly made bed. Sitting on the clean sheets she removed her healing bracelet and reluctantly placed it on the bedside table. Hesitating for another moment with weather or not she should remove her headdress or not. It would increase her power, allow her to better see what she aimed to. It would also of course make it harder to rest comfortably. There was also the fact that deep down she didn't want to test her seers sight in this way. She understood the possible advantage it might give them, but she did not have as much faith in her sight as everyone else seemed to. They only saw when her visions were correct. They didn't have to see it for themselves. Didn't have to see the blood and the pain, the lose. They didn't have to feel it either. Not twice as she did.
Deciding to go with comfort Morgana removed the headdress and placed it next to the bracelet. With a sigh she swung her legs onto the bed and rested her head on the pillow. Trying to quieten her thoughts and fall quickly asleep.
Drifting asleep came much quicker and deeper than Morgana expected. So much so that she missed the light knock on her door that came not long after she fell asleep. Fortunately the person who knocked didn't have a habit of leaving at one unanswered knock. Even at this hour and on the door of a queen.
Pushing gently at the door Merlin peaked his head through the half open door into the dark room. Something had told him that Morgana was going to try and see the ships before she was meant to try tomorrow when everyone gathered together again. While he wasn't sure how much help he could be he felt he had to offer any help he could. He opened the door further, making sure that no one saw him before slipping into the visiting queens chambers, closing the door behind. He called out Morgana's name softly as he crept across the room towards her bed where he could make out the out line of her sleeping in the dim light.
Just as he reached the bed the witch let out a faint gasp and pulled herself up right. Merlin almost jumped out of his skin. His nerves already pulled tight. He was just able to stop himself from letting out a undignified and not very masculine yell.
As her she steadied her breathing her eyes adjusted to the dark as she scanned the room. Her eyes finding Merlin in the faint light.
"What did you see." He asked with as much tact and as steady a voice as he could manage.
Morgana seemed to shack off what she had seen as she slipped off the bed and stood up. "Someone creeping into my chambers when I'm sleeping."
Merlin all but shrugged trying not to come across as guilty or creepy as he felt.
"I wanted to help."
Morgana seemed to accept this and choose not to bite back the fact that he was not going to be able to do much to help, which he took as a good sign. A sign that they weren't going to dwell on the nature of his presence in her chambers and focus on the matter at hand. A fact he was greatly relieved about.
"You saw something." He asked when he was really asking what it was she saw. There was no doubt that she had seen something.
Morgana sat back down on the edge of the bed. "Nothing really, flashes mainly. I couldn't make anything out clearly."
As she spoke Merlin moved forward, but still kept a respectable distance. "Where there any flashes of the ships or-"
"No. Just the glint of blades and blood." She only just bite back. Realising of course that Merlin was only just trying to help.
Unknown to himself Merlin had moved forward as Morgana was talking again and he now stood only a foot or so in front of her. Her pair feet and his boots pointing at each other. She tried to sound blasé and unaffected but it was clear the toll of seeing what she did had on her. Even after all these years and the aids she had now to minimise her visions it didn't seem to get any easier. Merlin wanted so desperately to take away the weight that she felt because of her unique magical gift. For as powerful as he was told he was there was nothing he could do. His body again moved before his mind had a chance to process what it was doing. He turned and sat next to Morgana. Once he was sitting his hand twitched to take hers that clung to the edge of the mattress or wrap around her shoulder. This time his mind was able to control his body before it moved on its own accord and he too placed his hands in his lap.
"Let me help."
"How." She asked sounding frustrated and also almost despite.
"I don't know how-" He was able to get out before she suddenly moved to stand up. "But there has to be a way."
Morgana scoffed as she began again to pace the room. Merlin remained sitting as he gave Morgana her space. He could imagine that waking after seeing what she had to find someone uninvited in your space would not be very pleasant. She needed the chance to fully shack it from her mind before she could think of what came next. He was also doing his best to not think very hard about the vision of violence and pain she had seen. Like all her others that came to pass. Once Morgana had paced herself to the other side of the bed, Merlin turned and stood a idea coming to him. It was not much but it was worth a try. He didn't want her to have to see what may come alone.
"We can try together-"
"How." Morgana snapped, failing now to hold back her frustration and anger as she twisted her head around to look at him.
"Like when you guided my magic to heal your rips, combine our magic-"
"Merlin." Morgana said while shifting to a more comfortable position.
She sounded more tired than angry now, but he was beginning to believe that his idea may work.
"With the extra power you can see more-"
"That's if I can control it. I have never been able to control it."
Turning away from him she sat on the opposite side of the bed. She had been willing to try and see what she could on her own. Now she was not sure she would try again tomorrow. It was important she knew, but an imagine had become imprinted into her minds eye. It was there like a thin curtain over everything she saw even when she closed her eyes. Then she could see it more clearly. The image of a fallen knight of Camelot. Their bright read cloak stained with a darker red. Their head was turned way from her, but she could make out their dark hair. This was the thing that had woken her from her dream. It could be so many people but the idea that it was Mordred got stuck in her mind. She was just aware enough to realise that this was how her visions worked. They showed her enough to make her anxious, worried that something would happen. To then find that what she saw was not exactly what would happen. It would be just enough to make her act, but not clear enough to act in the best way. Trying not to go down that path again, she kept telling herself that she didn't know for sure it was Mordred. It could be any number of people. Gwaine, Lancelot, it could even be Merlin. She quickly stopped continuing down this path as well. Neither of those possibilities seemed much better.
"Its worth a try." He said with a saint smile as he held a hand out towards her. "We're stronger together."
Keeping her head lowered not wanting to seem to give in to his sentiment, Morgana let out a sign as she pulled her legs on to the bed and slid to the centre. Her head still lowered as she moved to lay down and rest it on her pillow again. Merlin had begun to lower his hand felling awkward the longer he held it out between them. Morgana as she lay down held out her own hand and Merlin quickly lifted his to take it.
The warlock concentrated on channeling his magic into a sleeping spell at first. Once Morgana was sleeping again he simply continued to focus all his energy to their joined hands. Offering the sleeping witch his power. Closing his eyes he further tried to clear his mind. To be a blank slate that might be able too to see what she did.
Morgana did her best to try and focus her magic and the magic Merlin lent her through their joined hands. To focus on the sea and ships. Not to be pulled into what would happen, but to see what was. For a brief few seconds she would almost make out the faint lights on the ships in the black sea, but it was gone as fast as it came. Again all that she could see was blood and death. Thanks to Merlin's magic it was so much clearer this time.
Time dragged on slower than Merlin felt it should and still he saw nothing. No images, flashed played across his closed eyes. All he was aware of was the warm hand in his. He could feel her magic flow through his hand. It was chaos and it was beautiful. Lost in the warmth he only felt a flutter of his heart as her hand held his tighter. He had forgotten what all of his was for. only remembering when Morgana gripped his hand tight enough to case pain. Opening his eyes he saw Morgana shout up. Their hands still joined she threw her free arm Around Merlin's neck as he leaned down to check on her. Letting her hand go he wrapped his arms around her. He could feel her shaking as she tried to catch her breath. He heard himself tell her it was okay, she was safe, but his voice sounded faint and far away. So he wasn't sure he had said anything at all. He could also not be sure if after reassuring her he had in fact kissed on the top of her head or not.
I can't believe that it is already almost the half way point in the third and final part of the story. When I started rewriting I was not sure I would get it finished. As we are getting close to the end I would ask if their was anything in the story you feel my have been forgotten and needs to be resolved. I would hate to miss anything out that you were interested in, wanted resolved.
I would also really like to know how you feel about Gwen possibly being pregnant. It never came up in the show so I'm not sure how to handle it, so would welcome your thoughts and ideas. I do promise that however it moves forward it will not be done in a graphic way. This chapter would be as close to that as the story will get, but I'm still not sure about the rantings of stories. So please let me now if it needed changing.
As always any comments, feedback and ideas that you may have are very welcome and encouraged.
