CHAPTER 6: An Evil Spirit
Wednesday
Time 12:00
Early in the morning, Chazz walked out of Duel Academy with a bag. He looked at the Academy with a smirk on his face. "Stinking Duel Academy. You demotes me, you laughs at me. Well, that's it. I've had it. I'm leaving." He kept getting further and further away from the school. "I won't let these people fool me again."
It didn't take Chazz long to get to the dock and get on his private yacht and leave. What he didn't know and what was observed far from Red Hat. " So he finally left? Well, never mind, it was only a matter of time before that happened. You've been beaten by two Slifer, who you and the other Obelisk Blues believe are the worst in the academy. This proves that what I have said is the truth, You are by no means the best duelists you think you are. " As Red Hat was about to leave he noticed Pharaoh approaching him. "Pharaoh? What are you doing here?" As soon as he asked himself that, it didn't take long to realize that Banner was behind him.
"He came with me." Professor Banner said taking the cat in his arms. " I'm surprised to see you here Red Hat, were you watching Chazz leave?" He asked the boy.
"Yes, you can say that. Of course you and Pharaoh are never separated." Red Hat joked.
Banner laughed at the last part of what he said. "Yes, you're right. Then let's go." The professor said and left with Red Hat.
On the way back, Banner and Red Hat ran into Jaden and Syrus with them were Alexis and two of her friends with one who was tied up near a tree. "Is Jaden dueling with ... a monkey?" Red Hat wondered confused.
When a group of men were about to capture the monkey that had lost the duel with Jaden, Banner intervened and managed to make them leave. At that point he and Red Hat approached the group.
"How did the professor find us?" asked Alexei.
"As I said before I'm an animal lover and it's also thanks to Pharaoh."
"Yeah, but why was he looking for us?" Jaden asked.
"To tell you Chazz is fine, he's gone from the Academy. Red Hat can confirm that because he saw him leave." Banner explained.
"Red Hat, where's Chazz gone?" Jaden asked him.
"He left the island on his yacht, I don't know where he went though. Banner arrived after he left."
"Well, it's good to know he's okay. I'm sure he'll be back anyway." Jaden answered happily.
"I'm sure of it." Syrus added.
Red Hat wondered why they'll be looking for Chazz. He was not their friend, in fact he treated almost everyone here badly.
"Duelists who make excellent rivals are hard to find." Jaden said.
Red Hat was proving him right since Jaden was the only one they considered as a rival.
"You know what else isn't hard to find. The lessons you have to make up since you left class early." Banner explained to the students. Needless to say, Jaden was already shaking from having to go to class. "You're joining us Red Hat?" Banner addressed the Slifer in the red hat.
"Well, I have nothing to do so I might as well come." He simply replied.
Time 19:00
Later in the Slifer Red dormitory cafeteria, Jaden was telling Red Hat how he ended up dueling a monkey today.
"Wait, let me get this straight. You dueled a monkey that had escaped from a secret laboratory that ended up kidnapping Jasmine." Red Hat repeated the story his friend had told him trying to make sense of all this. "This island is starting to get too weird for me."
"Yes, but when will you relive such an experience in your life?" Jaden said smiling not thinking it was weird.
Seeing how Jaden felt about all of this, a bead of sweat rolled off Red Hat head.
"Guys, it's getting late, I'm going to my room." After saying goodbye to the other Red Hat, he shut himself up in his room and went to rest on top of the bed. "What else is on this island?" Red Hat wondered in his mind. "I sense something is going to happen here."
Saturday
Time 20:00
It had been days, all the Duel Academy students had gone home for the winter break. Except for Jaden, Red Hat, Syrus, Chumley and Professor Banner.
Chumley and Banner were in the kitchen making marshmallows on the grill, Jaden was dueling Syrus, while Red Hat was opening booster packs.
"I summon the Elemental Hero Clayman." As Jaden continued his duel, a boy was running towards the Slifer dormitory. "Help!" he cried in a weak voice. In the end he fell against a French window and broke it. The noise attracted the attention of all who went to see what happened. They found an exhausted but still conscious Obelisk blue on the ground.
"What happened? Did you see a ghost by any chance?" Jaden asked the unknown boy.
"Yes. Indeed it is." He replied.
"Oh, you realize you're raving."
"It was Jinzo, the Duel Monsters card." The mystery boy tried to explain.
"Yes, it's in bad shape. Maybe it's time to call the nurse on duty." Jaden said skeptical of this story.
"Maybe, it's the case." Red Hat agreed.
At that point Banner approached them. "But I know you. Your name is Torrey. If I remember correctly, you were attending one of my classes." Banner replied, seeming to know the boy.
"Yes, and so! Professor Banner, all your theories were true. That Duel Spirits exist." Torrey said.
"Better do two school therapists." Jaden said.
"Spirits. I don't believe in that kind of thing." Red Hat said.
"Now calm down, tell me everything." Banner said trying to calm down Torrey.
At that point Torrey began to tell what had happened. Torrey had told some of his friends from Banner class and about the fact that under certain conditions can summon Duel spirits. He and two of his friends tried to summon Jinzo spirit even if it was something forbidden in the academy, at first their attempts failed as nothing happened. Until their last attempt where they managed to summon Jinzo who asked him to give him three and he will manifest.
"We thought he meant the cards, but we were wrong." Torrey said.
"Oh, no. Cards aren't enough to appease Jinzo hunger." Banner clarified.
"But then what did that three refer to?" Syrus asked confused.
"He meant us." Torrey replied.
" To you. "
"Yes, and we agreed on that too."
"Where are your friends?" Syrus asked.
"He took them, one by one. And now I'm sure I'm next." Torrey replied filled with fear.
"It's not like they came back to home for the holidays." Jaden said.
" That's what I thought. But I called their families and they said they didn't come back. I also tried to leave the island but ... " .
Flashback
Torrey ran to catch the ferry off the island. When he arrived he saw a man covered in an overcoat on the deck of the ship.
"Going somewhere." He said uncovering his face showing that it was Jinzo.
At that point Torrey ran away.
"Run but you can't hide." Jinzo said.
Flashback End
"There is no escape." said Torrey trembling.
"Well, we seem to be safe here." Jaden thought.
After a few seconds the lights in the dormitory all went out.
"What happened?" Asked Syrus fearfully.
"A fuse must have blown." Banner speculated.
"It may have been thunder." Chumley added.
"Or maybe it was me." A voice said out of nowhere. In front of the group appeared Jinzo who had taken Torrey.
"Let him go Jinzo." Jaden ordered.
"We have a deal." Jinzo replied before running away.
"Not if I can stop you." Jaden replied before giving chase followed by Red Hat.
"Where are you going." Jaden keeps chasing him. "Spirit or not, I'm stop him." " If I can find him." Jaden said before stopping because he'd lost it.
"Where did he go?" Syrus asked.
"I don't know." Jaden replied.
"Don't tell me I ran that way for nothing." Chumley said wearily.
Red Hat still confused by the situation, trying to figure out where Jinzo had run to. Until than...
"Hey, can you hear me." Said a voice that seemed to be addressing Red Hat. He didn't understand where that voice was coming from, he started looking around to see who owned that voice but found nothing. "That spirit went that way." The voice told him, seeming to show him the way Jinzo had escaped.
"I think it went in this direction." Red Hat said confusing the group by his statement.
At that point the Pharaoh seemed to be agitated about something.
"Pharaoh, what's wrong?" Banner asked the cat.
"I think he can sense it." Syrus thought.
"Well, only one way to find out." Jaden states before everyone starts running in the suggested direction.
Red Hat still asked whose voice he had heard earlier, the direction he seemed to have suggested was the same as Pharaoh. He decided not to talk about it by following the group.
After running for a while in the woods they came to a place that looked like a small power station.
"What is this place?" Syrus asked.
"From the looks of it this must be the central power statio for the entire island, but I do not see Jinzo anywhere." Banner explained.
"Well, I see Torrey, are you safe pal." Jaden said as he tried to approach the passed out boy.
A rush of electricity seemed to manifest in front of Jaden who covered his eyes to not be blinded. In front of them Jinzo manifested in the form of a spirit.
" None of you are safe. " Minacciò Jinzo.
" What's going on Professor Banner? How is Jinzo appearing like that? " Syrus asked shocked and confused at the same time by the situation.
" It is the electricity. He is using the curent to power himself up. Heis a clever one. " Banner explained.
" Let Torrey go, Jinzo! If you need a third sacrifice so bad holden then just take me instead! You hear me Jinzo, take me! " Jaden shouted at Jinzo spirit.
"You radiate more vitality than this human. Your offer suits me." Jinzo replied.
"Fine, but on one condition, that you and I duel. If you win, you take my life energy, but if I win, you give back the other two you took." Jaden said defiantly.
" A duel, very well, i should be sustained by this electrical limbo there long for a match. First I'll beat you than consme you! " Jinzo said as he absorbed the electricity.
" Yeah, we'll see. Now come on and get your game on Jinzo! " Jaden said activating his duel disk.
DUEL
Jaden: 8000 LP
Jinzo: 8000 LP
"I go first. I draw!" Jinzo said as holographic versions of the cards in his hand materialized in front of him.
Hand 6
" I summon Malice Doll of Demise in attack position (Atk: 1600 – Def: 1700). Then I activate the continuous spell Ectoplasmer. Once per turn during the end phase, the turn player Tributes 1 face-up monster and inflicts damage to the opponent equal to half the original attack points. With this I end my turn. But first I activate the effect of Ectoplasmer! " A spirit came out of Jinzo monster, heading towards Jaden and hitting him.
Jaden: 8000 – 7200 LP
Hand 4
"Now it's my turn! I draw!" Jaden draws.
Hand 6
" I summon Elemental Hero Sparkman (Atk: 1600 – Def: 1400). Go Sparkman! Attack it directly with Static Shockwave! " Sparkman began gathering electricity in his hands, to blast his opponent with an electric shock.
Jinzo: 8000 – 6400 LP
"Now I set four cards facedown. Then I activate the continuous spell Mirage of Nightmare. Now during your standby phase I can draw until I have four cards in my hand, while during mine I discard the same number. I finish my turn. But yeah, I want to take advantage of the Ectoplasmer effect by offering Sparkman as a tribute." Just at his command, a spirit came out of Sparkman body and attacked Jinzo.
Jinzo: 6400 – 5600 LP
Hand 0
"Great move Jaden." Siro exulted.
"Just what I would have done now." said Chumley.
"A bit ironic. Jaden is attacking spirit with a spirit." Red Hat said trying to be a little funny. Surprising those present for the joke.
"Don't get too many illusions. Now it's my turn. I Draw!" Jinzo draws.
Hand 5
"Malice Doll of Demise effect from the graveyard is activated. When she is sent to the graveyard by the effect of a continuous spell during my standby phase, I can Special Summon her onto my field (Atk: 1600 – Def: 1700)." Jinzo explained as his creepy doll-like monster and came back again.
" You're not the only one activating an effect. You remember Mirage of Nightmare. Now I can draw four cards. Then I activate a card face down. The quick-play spell Emergency Provisions. For every spell or trap I decide to send from the field to the graveyard, I gain 1000 life points. Then I take out Mirage of Nightmare."
Jaden: 7200 – 8200 LP
"Now Jaden no longer has to discard cards from his hand on his turn." Red Hat pointed out.
" I summon Emissary of the Afterlife (Atk: 1600 – Def: 600). Go and attack it directly! Scythe strike! " Jinzo ordered, as his monster slashed at Jaden with the blade of his scythe.
Jaden: 8200 – 6600 LP
"Now I also attack you with Malice Doll of Demise." The doll-like monster was also attacking Jaden with its axe.
"Stop where you are. I activate a trap. A Hero Emerges! Now you have to choose a card in my hand, if the card you choose is a monster I can Special Summon it to the field." Jaden explained as he activated his facedown card.
"Does he want to bet everything on luck?" Red Hat wondered.
"That's typical of Jaden." Syrus told him.
"Alright I'll choose the last card on the right." He pointed to Jinzo.
" Great choice, for me since this is the Elemental Hero Clayman that I summon in defense position (Atk: 800 – Def: 2000). "
" Then I end my turn. But first, I activate Ectoplasmer effect again, sacrificing Malice Doll of Demise to deal damage to you."
Jaden: 6600 – 5800 LP
Hand 4
"Your idea of challenging me was great. Better to earn something slowly than all at once." Jinzo said while laughing in a sinister tone.
Jaden looked confused by his statement.
"Jaden, your legs are disappearing!" Syrus said, pointing at his friend, while everyone could see he was telling the truth. Jaden legs had become transparent.
"But what's going on?" Jaden asked worried about his condition.
"I'm just doing as you said at the beginning. Every time you lose life, you also lose your life energy which I take. " Jinzo replied.
"If he continues at this rate Jaden will disappear altogether." Red Hat said as he clenched his fists in concern for his friend.
"I won't lose! Now I draw! "
Hand 4
" I activate Pot of Greed and draw two cards. Then I use Polymerization to fuse Clayman and Burstinatrix and summon Elemental Hero Rampart Blaster (Atk: 2000 – Def: 2500)! " As the two heroes entered a vortex that fused them, an armored monster appeared in their place with a shield on his left arm while he had a large cannon on his right arm. " Then I activate Mystical Space Tyohoon to destroy Ectoplasmer." Powerful gusts of wind blew on the opposing card until it was destroyed.
"Now Jaden won't have to sacrifice his monsters." Chumley pointed out.
" Now Rampart Blaster tears Emissary of the Afterlife to pieces! Rampart Barrage!" Once in position Rampart Blaster fired a barrage of missiles at the opposing monster.
Jinzo: 5600 – 5200 LP
"Doing this you activate the effect of Emissary of the Afterlife. When it goes to the graveyard, we both choose a level three or lower normal monster from the deck and add it to the hand. I choose D.D. Trainer." Jinzo explained as he added the card to his hand.
" Then I choose Avian and end my turn. "Jaden ends his turn.
Hand 3
" My draw. " Jinzo manifested another card. " And I could not have ask for a better one. With this card my resurrection is almost complete! "
" What card?! "
" Hehehehehe... I activate Malice Doll of Demise special ability to resummon him. But only to sacrifice him in order to summon Jinzo (Atk: 2400 – Def: 1500)! " The electricity around the power generators went out of control and concentrated in the air, where lightning was hurled onto the field: A few seconds later, at the spot where the lightning struck, Jinzo appeared laughing maniacally.
"Oh, come on. You can't summon yourself." Jaden shouted.
"But I just did it. Now I can attack Rampart Blaster personally. Cyber Energy Shock!" Jinzo charged an energy ball to hit Rampart Blaster destroying it.
Jaden: 5800 – 5400 LP
" Finally, I equip myself with the spell card Amplifier! With this, I'm no lounger bound by my special ability, with this i can use the trap cards, however i please. I set two cards facedown and end my turn. "
Hand 1
"Blimey, he destroyed Jaden monster." Chumley was worrying.
"That's not the only problem. Now that Jinzo is on the field, Jaden can't use trap cards, while he can." Red Hat pointed out.
" Now, it's my turn. I draw! "
Hand 4
At that moment, Jaden Duel Spirit, Winged Kuriboh appeared to his right. "Kuriboh, you're right to get scared, that's really a monster." Jaden said to his little friend.
"Who is Jaden talking to?" Red Hat wondered as he heard his friend talking to someone. As she tried to listen to him he felt a similar sensation to before.
"A Duel Spirit?" Even Jinzo became aware of Kuriboh presence.
"Hey, watch your talk. Kuriboh is a spirit yes, but he's also a great friend of mine. Which is probably why he doesn't need to devour human souls to come to our world unlike you!" Jaden defended the friend. " Let's continue the duel. I activate Graceful Charity. I can draw three cards, then I discard two cards. " Jaden draws and discards two cards. " I play the spell card Fusion Recovery. Polymerization and Burstinatrix return from the graveyard into my hand. Now i play Polimerization to fuse Avian and Burstinatrix to fusion summon Elemental Hero Flame Wingman! (Atk: 2100 – Def: 1200) "
" Before you continue, I activate a trap. Spirit barrier." Jinzo said as he activate one of his facedown cards. " While i control a monster, i'm not taking a battle damage. "
" I don't think so. I activate the spell card R - Righteous Justice. I destroy a number of spells or traps equal to the number of elemental heroes I have on the field. Since I have Flame Wingman on the field, I destroy your Spirit Barrier. "
" And to continue, I activate the field spell Skyscraper ." Soon the setting of the field changed to that of a large metropolis. "Thanks to Skyscraper, Flame Wingman gains 1000 attack points, if he attacks a monster with more attack points (Atk: 2100 – 3100 – Def: 1200). Now attack Jinzo . Go with Infernal Rage! " Jaden hero fired a great flame from his dragon arm at Jinzo.
Jinzo: 5200 – 4500 LP
" Let's not forget about the effect of Flame Wingman. When it destroys a monster in battle, you take damage equal to its attack points."
Jinzo seemed to have disappeared, but his static voice was still audible. "I won't accept losing, I'm so close to my goal." Torrey was getting to his feet by then.
"Are you okay Torrey?" Jaden asked.
" I'm not Torrey, I'm Jinzo. I took over his body. And now I activate the continuos trap Call of the Haunted, with this, i can summon Jinzo from the Graveyard. "
"Not if I play my counter trap. Solemn Judgment. I pay half my life points to nullify your trap and destroy it." A holy man appeared in the middle of the field and caused a great solemn light to appear which destroyed Jinzo trap.
Jaden: 5400 – 2700 LP
"And before I forget, Flame Wingman's effect was about to hit you." After Jaden's words, Flame Wingman stepped in front of Jinzo unleashing a huge explosion.
Jinzo: 4500 – 2100 LP
" I'm not done yet. I activate my card face down. The quick play spell De-Fusion. I return Flame Wingman to my extra-deck, but Avian and Burstinatrix return instead." Jaden fusion monster, split into the two monsters that formed it.
"Go Avian, hit him with Quill Cascade!" The wind hero spread his wings, unleashing a strong barrage of arrow-sharp feathers at Jinzo.
Jinzo: 2100 – 1100 LP
"Now it's your turn, Burstinatrix. Hit him with Firestorm." The heroine of the flames attacked Jinzo with a wave of fire.
Jinzo: 1100 – 0 LP
When Jinzo life points dropped to zero, Torrey body was surrounded by a great light.
"Oh, my goodness." Banner gasped.
When the light had gone, it was day and they were all passed out on the ground. Jaden was the first to wake up.
" You okay?" Syrus asked.
"What happened? Did I miss breakfast?" Was the first thing Chumley said.
"Hey, look over there!" Red Hat said as soon as he woke up, pointing to Torrey and two other unconscious Obelisk blue.
" All back, safe and sound." Banner said, reassured for the three students.
"Think they know what happened?" Syrus asked.
"It's probably best if they forget, but i sure won't. Duel Spirits are just real, they're dangerous. " Jaden was thinking. " What do you say we get out of here guys, and let him sleep it off. I'm sure their spirits are worried. "
No one laughed at his joke. "Oh come on. That was a good joke." Jaden tried to joke.
"Jaden, I think that was out of line." Red Hat replied.
"You know what would be nice, some grilled marshmallows." Chumley replied
" Let's run." Syrus replied.
"Ah, no! I'm not running anymore!" Chumley said annoyed he still had to race.
While everyone laughed, Red Hat was thoughtful about much of what had happened. "Something like that I can't forget." After today's experience with Jinzo, her mind returned to another thought. "And Whose Voice Was It That I Heard Before?" After a few seconds, he decided not to give it any more weight, returning with the group to the Slifer red dormitory.
Meanwhile
"What the hell were you thinking. Why you helped them?!" asked a harsh raged voice.
"They needed help finding that evil spirit, I just thought I'd help them." Another voice answered in a calmer tone.
" Just you, who say you think about the consequences of our actions, decide to help strangers. You're not the one who always reminds us not to interfere with it. "
" I know I shouldn't interfere with these things, but that boy intrigues me, I would say a lot. "
"If you say so. So it's him."
"We're not sure yet, but that's why we have to keep an eye on it."
And that's it for this chapter. Feel free to try and guess who they are. As for Duel Monkey episode, I preferred to leave it with just a hint, without putting it in this chapter. To be honest I was a little hesitant to do the Jinzo chapter, but after thinking about it I decided to do it because I wanted Red Hat to know about Duel Spirits. That's why in this chapter I've made him stay as a kind of observer. I wanted Red Hat to find out about Duel Spirits and start getting a little curious about it, as well as what comes next.
