It was the most beautiful sunny Sunday. They couldn't have wished for a better day to start this new journey together. Love and celebration were definitely in the air. Who knew life would give them such a precious second chance? When neither of them believed in their reunion anymore, the Universe gave them the boost they needed.
The day had come surprisingly quickly. But if they wanted to be fully honest with each other, neither of them could wait any longer to be, at last, Mr & Mrs Flynn. So many years had passed and they wanted to catch up with the precious time they had lost. 25 years had happened. It had felt like the eternity.
As both had already been married, Sharon hadn't wanted to organize anything too fancy. With her children helping her, she had picked a nice white wedding dress. A very simple one with lacy sleeves, a delicate V-neck just low enough to show her generous cleavage and underlining her very elegant waistline. The bottom was flared, and beautifully so, the only crazy thing she had allowed herself although she knew it wasn't the wisest choice for a second time. She couldn't care less though. After all she wanted to feel pretty and attractive for the love of her life. It didn't matter if it didn't happen to be her first wedding. So many people never got the chance to find their one and only, and fortunately they were lucky enough not to be part of those anymore.
Soon enough, Andy found himself down the aisle, waiting for his girl to join him. All their friends and family were there, along with their four children. He couldn't be prouder to have everyone he loved surrounding him on the most important day of his life. How he had waited for this day to finally come! He was crossing the so waited finish line of the longest marathon he had ever ran and he had the best reward he had ever gotten. A wife. Her. The love of his life he could now call his. Sharon was definitely the most precious thing he had ever laid eyes on throughout his entire life.
Still waiting for her to brush the magical white carpet with her delicate high-heeled feet, he couldn't help but look at Provenza, strong pride in his eyes. He had made it to her against all odds. Of course, Louie wouldn't give him any emotional look, although he was touched by the heartwarming love he knew existed between these two idiots. He was struggling to keep his emotion at bay not willing for anyone to notice he had always secretly been rooting for his best pal to finally be with his soulmate.
Somehow, they had convinced the grumpy Lieutenant to join them in matrimony. They knew he wasn't the best for the job, but only he knew how strongly they had fought to be there today. So it just made sense that way. Provenza patted Andy's back, silently supporting and congratulating him.
All the guests suddenly rose, turning their back to the groom to admire the bride. She was escorted by a very proud Ricky guiding her to his about-to-be-father-in-law. As every step got her closer to Andy, her smile became wider and wider. She was full of emotion, he could feel it. Her eyes were sparkling with happy tears she couldn't hold anymore. When Ricky and Sharon finally reached the end of the aisle, Andy took her hand in his, squeezing it tightly not ever wanting to let her go. He helped her up the altar and shook Ricky's hand. He turned to the priest, still holding her hand. She squeezed his hand, pulling on his arm, as to ask for him to turn to her again. It surprised him.
Their eyes met again though what he found in hers scared him. He felt a knot form in his stomach. She was calling his name again and again, but he couldn't manage to get a single sound out of his mouth. Sharon sounded panicked. His vision blurred. Incomprehension. It was absurd. A minute ago everything was fine, and now something was apparently wrong and he didn't seem to understand what was happening. He blinked several times against the weird sensation.
Her face was changing with every blink. She didn't have her white dress anymore and neither did she wear her veil. He looked around, trying to find the priest, Provenza, the guests. They were nowhere to be found. His anxiety was crippling inside him like a dark animal eating him from the inside. Confusion. He kept blinking desperately trying to figure out what he was just witnessing. Tears were running down her cheeks. Her eyes were vivid green. Something was frightening her. She grabbed his arms, then moved to his face still calling his name.
Andy finally got a mumble out. Though it was barely audible, a sigh of relief exited Sharon's mouth.
- What's going on? he asked still confused.
- Andy! Oh my god! Are you okay, honey? Sharon grabbed his face again and kissed him several times.
- I think so… what's going on?! he managed to ask again more distinctly this time around.
- Car crash. Our car rolled over several times. I woke up first. You were out for a few minutes. I got so worried… she dried her tears with the back of her hand.
Their car had gone out of the road and landed against a tree. Andy's door was blocked by it. The windows were all broken. There was glass everywhere. Their phones had flown during the accident and were not on sight. The front part of the vehicle had been completely smashed. There wasn't much left of the car except for their two seats.
- Your face… he rose his hand touching delicately the bleeding wound on the arch of her eyebrow and the scratches on her cheek.
Her hand met his as to reassure him.
- No, it's okay, don't worry it's just a few scratches probably from the glass, she explained quietly.
They were lost in each other's eyes, feeling way too privileged to be both okay after such a terrible turn of events. Her cheeks still wet from her tears, Sharon felt that it was her opportunity to tell him what she had dreaded to admit to herself. She had almost lost him and it had made her understand how important it was for her to tell him the truth. She loved that man more than she could understand and he had the right to know. However, she didn't know what to expect from him as his reaction remained a big mystery to her. He hadn't been very clear about that subject except for the few comments here and there. To be honest with herself, they hadn't even thought about it as both were pretty convinced that part of their lives was gone forever. But he was her soulmate, the man that had saved her life more than once. She had to overcome her old demons and finally get the words out.
- Honey… remember I wanted to tell you something earlier? she started shyly. I've been willing to tell you this for a few days, I was just… scared… she looked away tears filling her eyes again.
- Scared? Sweetheart, you know you can tell me anything! If there's anything wrong, we'll fix it together baby… he enveloped her hand, squeezing it tightly. I'll always be there, no matter what… for better, for worse… he used his other hand to grab her chin and make their eyes meet again.
- … for richer, for poorer… she smiled in the middle of her tears.
- … in sickness and in health… he brought her hand to his lips his eyes still locked with hers.
- … to love and to cherish… her smile widened while tears kept rolling down her cheeks.
- … in good times and bad times till death do us part, Andy dried her tears with his thumbs, and I meant every word of it. Now tell me… what has been weighing on your shoulders…? he gave her a warm and inviting smile.
Before starting her confession, she could feel her heart beat faster than usual, probably because she was nervous but also because she had just fallen in love with him all over again. That man. He knew exactly what to tell her to make her feel safe. At that moment, she just regretted not having told him as soon as she found out.
- I know I should have told you, but you said that it was not really how you planned our married life together and I just… it reminded me of our first years… It was nonsense, I know it now but…
Andy had eyes only for her. He wanted to wrap her in his arms, relieve her from her old demons. Her hand was still in his, he didn't want to let her go. While she was explaining what had happened for her to be so distant lately, he wanted to take in the sight, all of it, every detail of her. She was so beautiful.
As she was about to say it, his eyes were on her mouth and on her eyes, deeply focused. He wanted to understand what was going on. Her face changed in a split second. Something was wrong. She bent over her middle, her hands grabbing her stomach while a grunt of pain escaped her mouth. It came out of the blue and Andy didn't know what to do. He felt anxiety rising again. He placed one hand on her shoulder while the other followed her hands and ended on her stomach.
- Sharon! What's going on?! Are you alright? he asked completely panicked.
He was about to add something when he saw it. The blood. What had he missed? She seemed fine except for scratches on her face. Where did all that blood come from? Where was she hurt?
- Andy… she was almost hyperventilating, I'm…
- You're bleeding! Sharon, you're bleeding! he exclaimed. What's going on?
- You don't understand… she started crying looking at the blood soaked in her pants. We need to go to the hospital now! her voice was shaking.
She gave him that look. A look of terror. She was frightened beyond explanation and yet he was still missing a piece of the puzzle. He started feeling his pockets in seek of his phone.
- Andy… we need to go fast… she begged.
- Okay… okay… he was still confused, not being able to put things together by himself.
She finally turned to him, devastated. It would be the first time that she would say it out loud and what a terrible way for him to find out.
- The baby… Andy… You need to hurry, or it'll be too late for the baby… tears kept flowing on her face.
- The… b… the b… he stuttered.
Adrenaline kicked in. He had to act fast. He was blocked by the tree so he put his feet on his seat and managed to exit the car through the windshield that had been broken in the accident. He cut himself under the ribs with a piece of glass remaining on the edges of the windshield but he couldn't care less. He didn't even feel the pain from the cut. Once out, he went around the car and used all his weight to pull the passenger's door. It was stuck as it had been smashed in. It took him several tries to have it open but after the third try, Sharon was finally free. Not even saying a word, he grabbed her arm and helped her out of the car. As soon as she was on her two feet, he scooped her sliding one arm around her waist and the other under her knees. He lifted her in his arms and got her as close to him as possible. She was still crying silently, probably trying not to fall apart. She wouldn't give up on what she now saw as her little miracle.
As he reached the road, a car stopped by them. A lady went out and offered her help. Andy shouted that it was an emergency and put Sharon in the passenger seat. He claimed the vehicle and thanked the lady dearly all the while putting Sharon's seatbelt on and hurrying to the driver's side. The keys were on the ignition and the engine was running. He stepped on the gas like never before. While zigzagging through the cars, he had trouble realizing what was truly happening. Sharon was pregnant. She was really pregnant. He was just beginning to wrap himself around the sudden news when he realized she could be losing their baby if he didn't get her to the hospital right now. This had happened before, and she was alone the first time around. Now he was there. He would do everything in his power to save his wife and their baby.
Andy slid his hand in hers, giving her silent support. She gently laid her head on his shoulder, still sniffling. She gripped his arm and hand for dear life. He started calmly whispering to her, vainly trying to ease her until they would finally reach the hospital.
- I know you're scared, Sweetheart, but I'm here okay? I won't leave you for a single minute. We're gonna make it to the hospital and we're gonna fight the hardest we can for our little baby. Whatever happens, I love you more than I can say and I'll always, always, be there for you.
Sharon was unable to say a word as her teeth were clenched and her throat tight, so she just squeezed his arm and hand in response. He understood and kissed the top of her head.
After a few minutes, they could finally see the hospital around the corner. When Andy stopped the car in front of the emergency entrance, he shouted for someone to bring a wheelchair and managed to explain shortly what was going on. Only he didn't anticipate that Sharon would be taken to surgery to stop the bleeding and he wouldn't be able to go with her. He was left alone in the corridor scared to death of losing either Sharon or the baby.
