A Liquid Inspiration
Summary: (A re-telling of Classroom of the Elite sparked by a certain conversation between Masterpiece and Professor.)
One day, Ayanokouji Kiyotaka receives a surprising invitation from his father, Ayanokouji Atsuomi, to join him for a drink. It was unusual for Kiyotaka, who normally wouldn't be summoned by his father without a hidden agenda.
That's why even the emotionless Kiyotaka was surprised when his father began to open up about his own experiences with love and relationships.
For the emotionally distant "masterpiece," this conversation is a rare moment of connection with his father, and it sparked a curiosity within him to explore the world of human relationships, to be more specific: romance and intimacy.
It was that spark that pushed Kiyotaka to demand something from his father:
"Father, teach me everything about human relationships."
This then begins a ripple that changes how Ayanokouji Kiyotaka would approach the world in the foreseeable future.
Vol 0. Chapter 4 - Kiyotaka's First Valentine's Day
Ayanokōji Kiyotaka
Currently, Eiichiro, Tsubasa, and I were out at one of our usual weekend gatherings. This time, we were in a public park, although at the moment, it was just Tsubasa and I, since the other boy in the group wanted to play football with the other kids.
He's basically just bullying them.
How would ten-year-olds stand a chance against a thirteen-year-old who's part of his school's varsity?
"Kiyotaka-senpai... do you wanna go out on Saturday?"
I heard Tsubasa speak in a rather soft tone, which was a far departure from her usual brash and childish way of speaking.
Looking at the blonde-haired girl, she was looking down at the ground and obviously flustered, if her unusual fidgeting of fingers is any indicator.
"Why Saturday specifically, Tsubasa?" I asked.
Tsubasa pouted after hearing my question. It would seem I was once again acting like a "no good, insensitive, robotic senpai," and she didn't like it.
"Baka, do you not know what day Saturday is? I-it's already embarrassing enough that I asked you out myself, you know? If anything, you should be the one doing the asking!"
What's so special about February 14?
Oh.
"I see. You wanted to help me understand what's so great about Valentine's Day," I replied matter-of-factly.
I would definitely appreciate the experience. What a nice girl.
"This dumb robotic senpai. Not everything is a lesson," I heard Tsubasa mutter under her breath.
Tsubasa grinned at me. "Hehe! I guess you could put it that way, Kiyotaka-senpai."
Didn't you just insult me earlier for deducing it'll be a learning experience?
Eiichiro was right. Women can be more complicated than mathematical concepts... perhaps we could add scientific theories as well.
I definitely found it easier to understand theories that took scientists and mathematicians years to unfold than the turbulent moods of women.
"Alright, I'll go with you. So, will it just be the two of us?" I asked.
Initially, I was going to ask if Eiichiro would go with us, but my instinct was telling me that Tsubasa would be mad if I did, so I changed the phrasing of the question.
I definitely am learning in terms of observing cues.
"Baka senpai, of course, it'll just be the two of us. It's Va-len-tine's, okay? Well... unless you're a garbage person and found yourself a harem, then you can have more people with you on Valentine's Day," she answered.
I see.
So only people like Kōenji are allowed to go with multiple people for Valentine's Day.
"Okay. Do you already have plans on where we're supposed to go this Saturday?" I asked.
"U-uh... no?"
"So what are we going to do then?"
"Dunno... probably eat food, hang out in the park, and... stuff."
I raised an eyebrow upon noticing a tinge of pink on Tsubasa's cheeks as she said stuff. That's oddly suspicious.
Tsubasa... I'm 14, and you're 13. We will only do handholding.
"I'll ask Matsuo for help then. It'll be better if we have an itinerary to follow if we're going to go out," I replied.
Tsubasa's blue orbs sparkled upon hearing that. It seems like I was right in assuming she asked me out on the fly and hadn't really planned things out.
"Yeah, that could work!"
I nodded my head and then took out my phone to message Matsuo, but before I could, I saw a message notification from Matsushita.
[13:00:40 Matsushita Chiaki] Are you free on Saturday?
I glanced at Tsubasa to check if she was looking at my phone, but luckily, she was staring at the clouds.
I wonder why Matsushita also asked me out for Valentine's Day.
Unlike Tsubasa, she's unaware that I'm essentially on a mission to be integrated into society, so she doesn't have the defense of "so you can learn what Valentine's Day is all about."
Does she perhaps like me?
Since we met last Christmas, Matsushita and I have been exchanging texts from time-to-time, but haven't really met again.
[13:01:30] I'm afraid I'm preoccupied with training on Saturday. Why?
Bzzt
That was quick.
[13:01:46 Matsushita Chiaki] Oh, that's a shame. I wanted to ask you out for lunch on Saturday because it's been a while since we saw each other. Would dinner work?
"Senpai, who's Matsushita Chiaki? Also, tell her you're on a date! Not training-a date!"
Ah, crap.
I turned my head and saw Tsubasa pouting as she looked into my phone.
"She's one of the people I met during the Christmas gala," I answered.
Tsubasa huffed. "Is she pretty? If so, who's prettier between us?"
What's with these questions?
"I guess so... but it's been two months since I last saw her, so I don't exactly remember what she looks like," I said in a smooth white lie.
If a woman asks you if another woman is beautiful and asks you to compare them, it's a death trap. At least, that's what Eiichiro told me.
Tsubasa turned her head away from me. "Hmp. You're getting away this time, Kiyotaka-senpai."
"But don't think I'll forget about this, okay? You better make sure to prioritize our date and not get distracted by any other girls," she said, still not looking at me.
Tsubasa, you're getting a little too heated there. Calm down.
"Don't worry, Tsubasa. You're the only girl I'm going out with on Valentine's Day," I said, hoping to placate her.
Tsubasa finally turned her head back to me and grinned.
"Good. 'Cause if there's another one, I'd have to kick their butts!" she exclaimed, punching the air.
"Yo, what's the commotion?"
How nice of you to finally pop in, Eiichiro.
"Kiyotaka-senpai is meeting with another woman behind our backs, Eiichiro! A Matsushita Chiaki."
"That's not what happened, Tsubasa. Stop being dramatic."
"Hmp!"
Eiichiro slung an arm over my shoulder and wiggled his eyebrows. "A woman, huh? Is she pretty?"
I nodded.
"Attaboy!"
"Eiichiro no baka! You shouldn't be encouraging him. Besides... we're already going out on Saturday," Tsubasa chimed in.
"You're such a lady-killer, Kiyotaka. Just like me," Eiichiro proudly said and wiped fake tears from his eye.
I rolled my eyes at Eiichiro's comment, or at least I imagined myself doing so. It's not like I wanted to be a lady-killer.
"What? No, I'm not," I denied, shaking my head.
"I mean, you're going out with two different girls on Valentine's Day. That's pretty impressive," Eiichiro teased with a smirk.
"It's not like that. Matsushita just asked me out for lunch because we haven't seen each other in a while," I explained.
Tsubasa crossed her arms and pouted. "And I asked you out first, Kiyotaka-senpai."
"I know, and I said yes. I'm not canceling on you," I reassured her.
The mischievous Eiichiro then nudged me on my side, "So... date with Tsubasa on Valentine's Day? You sure do work quick, you robotic bastard!" He teased.
"It's not like that, Eiichiro. Tsubasa just wanted to show me what Valentine's Day is all about," I explained.
"Oh, you clueless child," Eiichiro shook his head condescendingly.
Tsubasa was pouting, seemingly disappointed at my response. Weren't she the one that agreed that this was for me to learn what's so special about Valentine's Day?
Quite weird.
"I'll get you plenty of chocolates on Saturday if you stop pouting," I bargained.
"R-really? Okay, I forgive you for your insensitivity, baka robot-senpai!" Tsubasa exclaimed, grinning from ear to ear.
I smiled back at her. It was nice to see her so happy.
Although, I don't deserve those insults.
As for Matsushita, I still needed to reply to her message.
[13:06:20] I'm sorry, but I've already made plans with my friends for Saturday. Maybe some other time?
[13:06:35 Matsushita Chiaki] That's too bad. But yeah, let's meet up another time.
I sighed in relief. That went better than expected.
"Kiyotaka, remember to use protection, okay?" Eiichiro joked before walking away.
I internally winced as I saw Eiichiro get punched by Tsubasa. With the way Eiichiro's knees buckled, it must have packed quite the amount of power.
Well, with how things have escalated, the proper friendly response would be to whack Eiichiro on the head... at least, that's what Reddit says.
I slapped Eiichiro on the back of his head, causing him to stumble a little.
"You moron, we're underaged," I said, but Eiichiro just laughed as he walked away.
Tsubasa let out a huff and crossed her arms. "He never learns," she muttered.
I couldn't help but feel amused at her frustration towards Eiichiro's constant teasing.
"Enough about that degenerate. Let's make sure we have a good time on Saturday, Tsubasa," I said.
"You got it, Kiyotaka-senpai!"
Tsubasa really has that infectious energy going for her. I wonder how I would have reacted had I been raised in a normal home environment. Would I be flustered? Would my heart skip a beat?
Regardless, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation for Saturday. This would be a new experience for me, and I was looking forward to it.
Besides, Tsubasa is an incredibly cute girl.
This is a great way of experiencing the beauty of youth, as Eiichiro puts it.
4.1
"Kiyotaka-sama, it's me."
Hearing Matsuo's voice behind the door, I immediately stood up and headed to open the door.
It seems like it's time for me to "ascend to gentlemanhood," as Matsuo puts it.
Upon opening the door, I was greeted by Matsuo, who sent me a warm smile. I also noticed that he did not come empty-handed, as there were a couple of papers in his hands as well as some books.
"Good morning, Matsuo."
"Good morning as well, Kiyotaka-sama."
I gestured for Matsuo to sit on a chair that was across the table, and upon doing so, I also sat on the chair in front of him.
"I must say that I was surprised when I learned you were going on a date for Valentine's Day. Is there actually something going on between you and Nanase-chan?" Matsuo inquired, a smile still plastered on his face, but this time, I could tell there was a teasing undertone to it.
"No, not really. She asked me out so I could experience what Valentine's Day was like," I answered.
Matsuo chuckled.
"You still have much to learn about a maiden's heart, Kiyotaka-sama," he remarked.
"Hm. That is true. While I do know Tsubasa admires me romantically, I do not understand what made her do so," I replied.
Matsuo stood up and opened the cabinet near the corner of my room, taking out tea packets.
"That's a good step, Kiyotaka-sama. Recognizing the matter is the first step to understanding why that's the case," Matsuo explained as he began preparing the tea.
"Do you think I'd eventually be capable of love, Matsuo?" I asked.
"Of course. Just because you do not understand it now doesn't mean you'll never understand it. This is the entire reason why you asked to live outside the White Room, is it not?"
"Indeed. I asked to be taught concepts that weren't taught in the White Room."
"And you have already made great strides, Kiyotaka-sama. You've befriended my son, Nanase-chan, and even the Kōenji heir. To this day, I still wonder how the last one happened. Both of you seem to be complete opposites."
Matsuo had a look of wonder as he pointed out my relationship with Kōenji.
The truth of the matter is I do not exactly consider any of those three as friends. But rather, I recognize that I will be able to learn a lot of things by being with them. Maybe... except Eiichiro, who selflessly went out of his way to ensure I won't have a hard time engaging with people.
Eiichiro is not completely a friend, per se, but I have seen him as extremely valuable to me.
One who I would never discard at all costs.
What a strange thought.
I must really have begun maturing with regard to how I view people.
"I have indeed learned more by interacting with people my age," I paused as I thought about the narcissistic yet, amusing Kōenji. "About Kōenji... he's an obstinate fool but a rather amusing one."
"You have quite the unique words in describing your friends, Kiyotaka-sama." Matsuo had an amused look on his face as he took in my response.
"Hm. Is that so? I was simply being honest," I replied as I idly noticed that Matsuo was about done preparing the tea.
After a minute or so, Matsuo returned to our table and poured two cups of the tea he had just brewed.
I grabbed the one he gave to me, and upon inhaling the aroma, I nodded at Matsuo in appreciation. As great as I am in tea ceremonies, the butler still has me beat in this field.
He is truly a man worthy of his distinction.
"It's great as usual, Matsuo," I said in appreciation.
Matsuo gracefully bowed before sitting.
"Thank you, Kiyotaka-sama."
Looking at how graceful Matsuo is, I couldn't help but wonder if his boisterous son Eiichiro would one day be able to reach the same level of refinement as his father.
Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate Eiichiro for who he was, but I have developed a certain degree of respect for his father simply because of how he carries himself, as well as the wealth of knowledge he possesses.
I had just learned that before being under my father's employ, Matsuo Keiji used to be a high-ranked military officer and only retired from duty upon Eiichiro's birth. That gives an easy assumption that this man does not only have the grace of a butler, but he also carries with him the discipline and capabilities that a military officer worth his salt has.
"I believe it is now time for us to discuss how you are going to conduct yourself on your date, Kiyotaka-sama. Since this will be your first experience, I will not be expecting your date to be perfect. However, it is imperative for you to pick up on certain gestures or cues so you can address the needs of your date. This is what this class is all about," Matsuo explained.
I nodded my head, which Matsuo took as his signal to continue.
"The most basic advice I could give you is to act yourself. Nanase-chan's affection is a result of how she appreciates who you are as a person. But aside from that, it is important that for your Valentine's date, you must treat Nanase-chan not just as a friend but as a blossoming young woman. Do not hesitate to hold her hand, being a gentleman and such. As to how you must respond to some of Nanase-chan's quirks, I have written down certain observations I have made during your interactions as well as the appropriate reactions to said observations."
Matsuo then handed me a red notebook with a bookmark attached to the upper half of it.
Upon opening it, I saw exactly what Matsuo was talking about.
The page was entitled "Observations on Nanase Tsubasa."
It was a detailed profile divided into certain categories: Basic profile (Name, Age, Parents, Education), Personality, Relevant relationships, Characteristics, Observable Reactions, and How to deal with specific reactions.
As expected of someone with experience in espionage, I suppose.
Normal people would definitely be unnerved by the level of detail that I've seen in Matsuo's output now that I've gone through a couple of pages.
Fidgets her fingers when she feels embarrassed.
Typically assertive but shows a bashful side when around Kiyotaka-sama. Tendency to do this was first observed on January 4th-an indicator of possible romantic interest.
Has a tendency to be upset at Kiyotaka-sama's passiveness pertaining to her affections.
Realizes that Kiyotaka-sama does not understand love, and while the subject has no known romantic encounters, she wishes to be able to be the one who makes him feel love.
The subject has shown a tendency to glance at Kiyotaka-sama once every 7.12 seconds-this exact timing is verified by a stopwatch.
It's really...really detailed.
I flipped the pages before the profile of Tsubasa and saw there were even entries for Asuka and Eiichiro.
Matsuo truly is remarkable, given his observations were more or less on-point.
"I have a question. Do you also turn over these observations to my father?"
Matsuo chuckled in response.
"Yes and no, Kiyotaka-sama. While I do turn over reports to your father, they weren't as detailed as what you are currently reading. I simply wrote these entries to help you better understand the people around you, but it is up to you how you are going to shape your relationships with them. After all, Kiyotaka-sama, you are your own person. Not a person to be shaped by my ideals, and most especially, not a person whose sole purpose relies on the will of another person. Your purpose of living is something only you can find, Kiyotaka-sama," he answered.
My eyes widened slightly at those words.
Your purpose of living is something only you can find, Kiyotaka-sama.
"You say the most interesting things, Matsuo," I idly said as I rested my cheek on my hand.
What Matsuo just said made me think for a bit.
"I can say the same for you, Kiyotaka-sama, with your entire monologue about equality," Matsuo pointed out.
"You heard that? Ah, that's embarrassing," I murmured before taking another sip of tea.
"But going back to our discussion, here are the ideal itinerary for your date, as well as the things you are going to get for Nanase-chan..."
Matsuo's body language shifted to that of a professional tutor who wanted to get things across the head of an inattentive student.
The man then pulled out the other notebooks with him and made me read their contents as he continued explaining certain things about women as well as the appropriate places to go.
Looking at the itinerary he had set up, I'm impressed by how comprehensive it was since not only was there a timeline of events, but he also added alternative venues/areas that Tsubasa and I could go to.
Matsuo never disappoints, does he?
He's one hell of a butler.
4.2
Nanase Tsubasa
I don't know how this came to be, but I knew one thing: I like Kiyotaka-senpai.
Not as a senpai, but as someone who I could love.
If I told people how I came to like him, they'd simply assume I liked him for his looks, which... is fair. Kiyotaka-senpai is really handsome, after all.
But that is just too shallow.
I'm not a girl like that. Perhaps it's idealistic of me... after all, I'm still 13, but what's wrong with a girl thinking you can't screw around when it comes to having feelings?
Nothing, right?
Now, my interest in Kiyotaka-senpai began when we first met. It was around mid-November, so that's like three months ago.
He was so boring at first. Blank face and an even blanker voice.
But... he was quick to show there's more to him than that.
He was just so awesome, you know?
He paid for a freaking gourmet meal! And then, when we went to the mall, he even won me a couple of stuffed toys in the crane game that's really rigged!
It had to be rigged since I didn't win anything. I was about to cry until Kiyotaka-senpai got the ones that I wanted to get myself. He was so cool!
But of course, I didn't like him right away!
I'm a maiden, you know?
Anyways!
My first day with Kiyotaka-senpai had a strong impression on me, and it simply grew the more time we spent with each other.
Not only is he awesome as a person, he could fight too!
I may not look like it, but I'm trained in Martial Arts. I even taught Eiichiro a couple of things that I picked up, so I knew what I was talking about.
So when I stumbled upon Kiyotaka-senpai going through some katas with almost no wasted movements and precise attacks, I was in awe!
Even my Martial Arts instructor has some cracks in his armor, yet somehow Kiyotaka-senpai doesn't have them.
He's handsome, he's smart, he's thoughtful, he's nice, and he could fight.
He's really the complete package!
Then came Christmas...
Kiyotaka-senpai's straightforwardness really caught me off guard, and that made me think of things that an innocent maiden shouldn't think about.
Asking me for a kiss... on the lips.
Does he have no tact?
I probably already liked him before Christmas, but those text messages really made me think of what if we got together.
Kyaa! The thought alone is making me go doki-doki~!
Calm yourself, Tsubasa!
It's been almost two months since, and my feelings for Kiyotaka-senpai show no signs of weakening.
In fact, I can say that I... might have found my first love.
How can such a robotic, dumb, no common sense senpai also manage to be really smooth and sweet when it counts?
It's unfair!
But... I wouldn't have it any other way.
Hehe~! We'd really look cute together, right?
Aaaahh! I don't think I could sleep when senpai's face keeps appearing in my head.
Mou! Just for that, I'll make sure you'll blush on Saturday, you baka, insensitive senpai!
Anyways, I know that you do not understand love, Kiyotaka-senpai, which is why...
I hope you will allow me to teach you all I know about it.
I will make our date count!

Ayanokōji Kiyotaka
"Oh, you must be the Kiyotaka-senpai that Tsubasa-chan keeps talking about! You're quite the cutie, aren't you? I can understand why my darling daughter likes you so much~."
The blonde-haired woman, who looked like an aged-up Tsubasa, gushed upon seeing me.
Holding her hand was Tsubasa herself, who was incredibly flustered at the straightforward revelation her mother had just said.
Tsubasa glared at her mother. "K-Kaa-san!"
"Now, now, don't be angry, Tsubasa-chan! I'm sure Kiyotaka-kun here doesn't mind. Am I right, Kiyotaka-kun?" Tsubasa's mother smiled at me as she said that.
The beautiful sight in front of me is a heavy indicator that the currently pouting girl in front of me will grow up to be extremely beautiful.
I wonder if her breasts will be as big as her mother's when she grows up. Hmm, I'll be waiting patiently for that hypothesis.
"Oh, I always find it cute seeing Tsubasa flustered, so I don't mind," I teased Tsubasa, who shifted her glare from her mother to me.
"I'm glad you agree! Well, I'll leave my little Tsubasa-chan in your hands, Kiyotaka-kun. Make sure to keep your date wholesome, alright? I might skin you alive if I end up being a grandmother at the young age of 36!"
"The lewdest thing Tsubasa and I will do today will be handholding," I declared shamelessly.
Tsubasa's mother simply stared at me, and Tsubasa, on the other hand, was muttering "stupid senpai" over and over again.
Did I screw up?
"HAHAHAHHAHAHAHA! You're incredibly amusing, Kiyotaka-kun! Well, at least I can make sure that Tsubasa-chan will be fine," she replied.
Should I have brought contraceptives? Why does it seem like it is implied that couples who date on Valentine's Day need to have sex?
Unfortunately, I haven't consulted internet-sensei on how to perform sexual acts on a woman, so I'll hold that thought off until I turn fifteen since fourteen is quite the young age to lose my virginity.
That's reasonable, right?
"Kaa-san!"
"But before I forget, Kiyotaka-kun. My name is Nanase Tsunade. You're free to call me Kaa-san as well," Tsunade winked before waving the two of us goodbye.
As I watched Tsunade's figure disappear into the crowd, I felt my cheeks being pinched by an annoyed Tsubasa.
"Kiyotaka-senpai, you're lucky I like you. That was really embarrassing, you know? You owe me more chocolates now!"
I tilted my head in confusion.
"Aren't these enough?" I pointed my index finger at the bench where a couple of expensive chocolate boxes lay.
"W-Wait, you bought some already?" Tsubasa asked.
I nodded my head.
"Not only that. I got these too," I outstretched the hand I was hiding to show Tsubasa a mini bouquet of flowers that I selected based on her personality. I figured these specific flowers and colors represent Tsubasa best.
I've consulted both Matsuo and Internet-sensei about it, and they both thought it was a thoughtful gift.
"You came really prepared, Kiyotaka-senpai," Tsubasa spoke in a soft tone as she received the bouquet that was in my hands.
Upon sniffing the flowers for a couple of seconds, Tsubasa's blue orbs met my own before sending me a toothy smile.
"They're really pretty! Thank you, Kiyotaka-senpai."
I took out my phone and decided to take a picture of Tsubasa's smile. I figured it would be the right thing to do in this scenario.
After all, she looked incredibly cute.
Upon hearing the clicking camera sounds, Tsubasa's cheeks had a tinge of red to them. I simply walked in her direction and showed her the photo I had taken.
"I couldn't help it. You look adorable when you smile, Tsubasa," I explained.
"How can you say things like that with such a straight face, Kiyotaka-senpai! It's unfair. I'm going doki-doki right now, and you still sound like a robot. Mou~!" Tsubasa pouted, but I could feel she was incredibly happy at my words.
"Ah, I'll practice a livelier voice, I guess," I replied.
"You're such a dummy, Kiyotaka-senpai."
Women are just so confusing.
"Why don't we sit here for a while, Kiyotaka-senpai? I'd like to taste some of those chocolates you brought, hehe~!"
Tsubasa then sat on the bench I had sat on earlier and then patted the spot next to her.
It seemed like I had no choice, so after picking up the chocolate boxes, I sat right next to Tsubasa, who was happy that I had indulged her.
"Fwah~! These are really good, Kiyotaka-senpai! Here, you should have some too!"
I turned my head to the smiling Tsubasa and raised an eyebrow as I looked at the chocolate bar she wanted me to eat.
"Are you sure?"
"Mhm-mm! I'd also be sad if you won't eat it," Tsubasa replied as she pressed the chocolate on my cheeks.
"Maa, I get it already." I took the bar and ate it whole.
Hm. It does taste delicious. I wonder if Tsubasa's lips taste the same as the chocolate since there are crumbs on her upper lips.
"B-baka Kiyotaka-senpai!"
"Did I say that out loud?"
Of course, I did. Tsubasa wouldn't be that flustered otherwise. It seems like I need to fix my habit of getting lost in my thought since I do have the tendency to blurt out whatever comes to mind.
Tsubasa pouted. "You have a hidden perverted side, just like Eiichiro."
"I don't think so. There's a big difference between perversion and curiosity. Now that I think about it... is it more enjoyable if I shower with a friend?"
"E-eh?! What's with that question, Kiyotaka-senpai!"
"Oh, so it's inappropriate, then? I was just curious about it since showering makes me relaxed. My bad."
"O-of course, it is! Besides... people should only shower together if they're a couple, you know?"
That's a shame because I don't want to commit to a relationship just yet.
"How do you even know that, Tsubasa?"
"My mom told me."
"Ah, that explains a lot."
"Mhm-mm!"
Nanase Tsunade, after all, seems like a pretty forward woman with a teasing streak visible from a mile away. I hope Tsubasa remains as the Tsubasa she is right now. I don't think my heart could handle it if she turned out to be like her mother.
I'd rather have her turn into a tomboyish pretty girl with violent tendencies than a tease.
I... have developed a tendency to avoid women with the so-called "Ara Ara" energies due to anime.
Yes, it's one of my greatest shame, and I hope everyone blames Eiichiro for it.
"Senpai..."
"Hai?"
Tsubasa had a cute, bashful expression on her face as she held onto her phone, which she had just retrieved from her pockets.
"Can we take a photo together?"
Oh, so that's what it was about.
"Sure thing. Let me have your phone." I extended my hand to Tsubasa, who immediately handed over her phone.
After opening the Camera app on her phone, I gestured for Tsubasa to come closer so we could fit in beautifully in the frame.
As she shifted closer to me, I could smell the scent of her perfume. It exuded a wonderful, fresh fragrance that fits the image I have of Tsubasa—a kind, expressive, and surprisingly bashful girl.
The type teenage boys would go crazy for.
I hope she hasn't noticed that I've been sniffing her because she'll definitely think I've become a pervert.
"What are you waiting for, Kiyotaka-senpai?"
"Ah, my bad. I was simply caught off-guard by how nice your perfume smells, Tsubasa," I complimented her.
"You think so? Kaa-san bought this because she thought it'd be perfect," she joyously replied.
"Yeah. It adds to your beauty," I added.
"Mou~! Stop trying to make my heart go doki doki!"
I shook my head in amusement before finally posing for the camera. Tsubasa also did the same, and after she had found a pose she was comfortable with, I began taking photos.
"Lemme see how they look!"
I handed Tsubasa's phone back to her, and the girl eagerly checked the photos I had taken.
"Uwaaa! We look really cute here, Kiyotaka-senpai!" She gushed at the photos, especially the one where she was holding the bouquet close to her chest while resting her head on my shoulder.
"I agree."
"So where are we headed next, Kiyotaka-senpai?"
"Cat Cafe Calico."
"Cat Cafe Calico?! Senpaaaaaai, you're the best!"
Ironically, even though I joked about how Tsubasa was like a cute puppy, she's actually a cat person and has two pet cats in her home.
Upon knowing this, I asked Matsuo if taking her to a cat cafe would be a good idea, and of course, Matsuo praised my eye for detail... even though it's a conclusion normal people would probably reach.
"Indeed. Matsuo said it was the best cat cafe in town," I replied.
"And he's right about that! To think you'd actually take me there." Tsubasa gushed as she went on a monologue on how she was going to spoil the cats.
It was adorable.
"Kiyotaka-sama, Nanase-chan. Allow me to drive you to your next destination," Matsuo said as he bowed before us.
Driving around town inside a limousine really isn't something that a fourteen-year-old kid does on a date.
My father... seems to have low common sense as well.
I don't need a military convoy or an expensive limo for this.
This is just your normal Valentine's Day date, you know?

Today is Valentine's Day, and well... it's really nothing special for me. It'll be no different from the prior years, where some boys would confess to me and inevitably get rejected.
But, I really wanted it to be different this year... to finally go out on a date with someone on this day.
A thought that I only entertained upon knowing Ayanokōji Kiyotaka.
The thought of him always brings a subconscious smile to my face for some reason.
I've only met the guy once, so it really doesn't make sense to me.
Is it because of how strong my initial impression of him was?
He was strong, handsome, and surprisingly interesting as a conversationalist.
But there are plenty of guys like that.
What makes him stand out?
It's a thought that had been plaguing me ever since, and I thought that asking him out on Valentine's Day would be a good way of seeing for myself what I instinctively found interesting about him.
But he has plans with friends, or so he says...
Because right now, Ayanokōji Kiyotaka is about 10 or so meters away from me, and he's currently taking pictures with an incredibly cute girl who's holding a bouquet.
He could just be honest and say he's on a date, you know?
It would make things easier for me!
Well... at least I get to enjoy Valentine's Day with my parents this year.
"What's wrong, Chiaki-chan?"
My mother's voice interrupted me from my thoughts, and upon seeing the look on her face, I sent her a smile to ease up her worries.
"I thought that boy was familiar," I answered and pointed at Ayanokōji.
My father then made his entrance into our conversation. "Wasn't that the boy who embarrassed Suzuki last Christmas?"
"Mhm-mm," I hummed in agreement.
"Hah! I like that boy. Suzuki definitely needed to be taken down a peg or two," he added.
"It's a shame he already seems to have a date. I think both of you would look cute together, Chiaki-chan."
My face is probably so red now with what my mother said.
"Don't say something like that! Ayanokōji-kun is already on a date with someone, okaa-sama."
Oh no.
"So you do actually know the boy. 'Familiar,' she says. You should know by now that you cannot lie to your mother, fufufu! "
"Hai. I talked to him for a while during the Christmas Gala," I revealed.
"You never told us about that... but I did notice you seemed happy when we exited the gala. Okay, that settles it. We should follow them around, Chiaki-chan!" She encouraged.
"F-follow?! Wouldn't that be like stalking?"
"How did you think I managed to get your father to fall in love with me?"
"Your good looks? Your personality?" My father guessed.
"Nope. It's because I was able to find out everything about you, and it's time for Chiaki-chan to do the same with this Ayanokōji boy. He's still too young to get married anyways, so our little Chiaki-chan still has a chance!"
"Okaa-sama! I don't like him that way!"
"Maybe, but you haven't shown any interest in boys your age until now. This is a breakthrough, Chiaki-chan!"
If I could, I'd bury myself alive now.
To think my mother would be this encouraging about stalking someone!

Ayanokōji Kiyotaka
It took around five minutes for us to arrive at Cat Cafe Calico. Living up to its name as a popular cat cafe, there were people lining up to get inside—probably irresponsible people who hadn't bothered to appoint a reservation.
"Excuse me, sir, but do you have a reservation?" The pretty, dark-haired receptionist outside the front door asked.
"Yes. It's issued under the name Ayanokōji Kiyotaka," I replied.
Upon looking through the master list, the receptionist looked back to Tsubasa and me and then sent us a smile.
"You picked a great place to have a Valentine's Day date! Oh, young love. Welcome to Cat Cafe Calico, Ayanokōji-sama!" She greeted with enthusiasm, and the guard then opened the door.
As we walked through the door, we were greeted by the sound of soft meows and the sight of cats lounging around the cozy room. We found a table near the window and ordered some food and drinks before turning our attention to the cats.
One cat, in particular, caught our eye - a fluffy white Persian who was lounging on a cushion by the window. Since I don't have any background with cats, I simply watched as Tsubasa approached her slowly, afraid to scare her off.
To Tsubasa's delight, the cat seemed happy to be petted and stroked.
"Kiyotaka-senpai, do you want to hold her as well?" Tsubasa grinned at me as she extended her arms, almost shoving the cute cat in my face.
"Meow~"
Cats are incredibly adorable.
SCRATCH
Scratch that.
Internet-sensei was right. Cats are indeed evil.
"You should learn not to give cute little kittens a cold stare, baka Kiyotaka-senpai~!" Tsubasa teased as she went back to petting the evil cat, who seemed tranquil under her touch.
This is unfair. I also deserve to be adored by animals, and Tsubasa isn't exactly a puppy, so she doesn't count.
If I was not socially stunted, I believe I would have conjured a pout in my face at this very moment. Am I really that unloveable? Why won't cats play with me too?
Lost in my thoughts, I didn't realize that Tsubasa had already moved on to play with another cat. It was a Siamese with piercing blue eyes, and it seemed to be enjoying the attention.
As I watched Tsubasa, I couldn't help but feel a little envious of her easy charm with animals. It was something that came so naturally to her while I struggled to even get a cat to acknowledge my existence.
"Kiyotaka-senpai, come on! You have to try this one. It's so fluffy!" Tsubasa called me over, her eyes shining with excitement.
I reluctantly made my way over, hoping that this cat wouldn't scratch me like the last one. I stiffened up, unsure of what to do. I had never been this close to a cat before, but as I approached, the cat simply looked up at me and started purring.
Feeling a sense of accomplishment, I slowly reached out my hand to pet the cat's soft fur. To my surprise, the cat started rubbing its head against my hand, almost as if it was asking for more.
Tsubasa then handed me the cat, which I placed on my lap. To my surprise, the cat did not react negatively to being carried. Perhaps this was one of the more affectionate ones?
"Hello there," I said softly, extending my hand to let the cat sniff me. A few moments later, the kitten purred again, and I couldn't help but smile. Maybe cats weren't as evil as I thought.
How fickle of you, Ayanokōji Kiyotaka.
Tsubasa laughed and took a picture of me with the cat on my lap, which made me feel a little self-conscious, but I couldn't help but feel a little happy about the whole thing.
"You finally got a cat to like you, Kiyotaka-senpai," she teased.
"I'm relieved. I was sure they'd hate me because I've been around with a puppy a lot," I joked.
She deserves that for teasing me.
"You've never been with a puppy before. What do you—oh! Kiyotaka-senpai, you meanie! Why do you guys even call me a puppy, anyway?" Tsubasa pouted and hugged the cat she had in her arms tightly.
"You even had me as puppy-chan in your contacts. You thought I wouldn't notice? You're so mean, Kiyotaka-senpai!" I could tell she wasn't really angry, so I simply thought her puffed-up cheeks looked cute.
I couldn't help but be amused at Tsubasa's reaction. "Well, you do act like a puppy sometimes. It's endearing," I said, trying to placate her.
Tsubasa rolled her eyes, but I could tell that she wasn't really mad. "You're lucky I'm in a good mood because of all these cute cats. Otherwise, I'd give you a piece of my mind," she said, still pouting.
"I'll make it up to you, Tsubasa. How about we go get some ice cream after this?" I suggested.
Tsubasa's eyes lit up. "Yes! I love ice cream," she exclaimed.
We spent the next hour or so playing with the cats, taking pictures, and drinking our drinks. It was a relaxing and enjoyable Valentine's Day date, even if it wasn't the conventional kind.
"You still up for ice cream, Tsubasa?" I asked, standing up from the table with the cat still in my lap. The cat seemed reluctant to leave, but I gently placed it back on the cushion by the window.
"Mhm-mm! Let's go, Kiyotaka-senpai!"
As we left Cat Cafe Calico, I realized that my opinion of cats had changed. They weren't evil creatures, after all. In fact, they were just like any other animal, capable of affection and playfulness.
And no, I'm definitely not biased simply because a cute cat willingly allowed itself to be held by me. Definitely not.
As we walked towards the ice cream shop, Tsubasa linked her arm with mine, and I couldn't help but feel a flutter of excitement in my chest.
Maybe next time, I'll even consider getting a cat as a pet.
But for now, I was content with the memory of that fluffy Persian cat purring contentedly on my lap.

After enjoying ice cream with Tsubasa and roaming around Tokyo, I saw that it was now 6:30 PM. Matsuo had an idea of us having dinner at Sky Restaurant 634, located in the Tokyo Skytree Tower. The idea of dining in a restaurant that was 345 meters above the ground was thrilling and romantic at the same time, but that's just too much for a couple of children like Tsubasa and I.
Currently, we were once again in the park where we had met hours ago, eating a rather exquisite bento that Matsuo had the maids cook.
"Kiyotaka-senpai, I've got to admit that I'm kind of embarrassed by how you planned everything out when I was telling you that I was supposed to teach you what Valentine's Day was all about," Tsubasa shyly said.
"Hm? Was teaching me about Valentine's Day actually the point of our date, Tsubasa? I may not understand why you like me, but I do know that you like me," I replied, leading Tsubasa's blue orbs to widen.
"I did remember you muttering, 'This dumb robotic senpai. Not everything is a lesson,' so that already made me realize that there's more to this than just making me realize what makes this day special." I added.
"Y-You heard that? Mou~! I'm so embarrassed now," Tsubasa said as she covered up her beet-red face with her palms.
It was adorable.
"But you're right... I do like you, Kiyotaka-senpai."
"Wouldn't it be unfair on your part? I do not exactly understand what entails love, Tsubasa. I didn't even have any friends until I met you and Eiichiro. A lot of the memories we had the past couple of months were first times for me."
And I doubt you would be able to make me feel love, Tsubasa. I might have come to care for you, but at the end of the day, your value to me simply lies in making me understand the dynamics between a man and a woman.
But I might also be wrong in that assessment, as unlikely as it can be, because the concept of romance is weird to me.
"I know you still do not understand what love is, Kiyotaka-senpai, and well... we're still pretty young to be thinking of a committed relationship anyways. But... I am thankful that you allowed me to have this date with you. It means a lot to me, and maybe someday, when you finally understand love... you can return what I am feeling towards you."
Tsubasa smiled at me and held my hands with her own. "I will be waiting for you, Kiyotaka-senpai."
Is this actually how relationships work? You feel something for another person and hope they'll return these feelings. Isn't that a little foolish? Shouldn't people in love be more realistic?
Or maybe it's this blind optimism that makes humans appreciate love?
That's another thing to confirm, I suppose.
"Thank you, Tsubasa. I may not be able to return your feelings for now, but I had fun spending time with you."
Tsubasa's smile grew wider at my words, and she leaned in for a quick peck on my cheek. "I had fun too, Kiyotaka-senpai. And who knows, maybe someday you'll understand love and return my feelings." She giggled softly.
"What was that for?" I asked, my fingers tracing along the spot Tsubasa had just kissed.
Tsubasa said nothing, simply opting to stick her tongue out at me before returning to eating her bento.
That's a little mean, Tsubasa. Don't keep me in the dark.
As we finished up our bento, the sky was slowly transitioning from the orange hues of dusk to the deep blue of night. The park was quieter now, with only a few couples lingering around. Tsubasa and I stood up, dusting off any stray crumbs from our clothes.
"Even if I anticipated your rejection, it still stings a little, you know? You owe me more chocolates!" Tsubasa playfully punched my shoulder as she said that.
"You shouldn't have too many chocolates, Tsubasa. You'll get fat," I joked but considering my voice remained the same, I'm not sure if Tsubasa could appreciate my peak comedy.
"Baka senpai! Insensitive! Robot! Kiyotaka!"
Called it.
"Please do not use my name as an insult."
"It's your fault for being a big meanie!"
"I'll make it up to you."
"You better!"
Tsubasa laughed as we walked out of the park, and I couldn't help but smile at her infectious joy. It was a good day, and even if I didn't understand love fully yet, I was grateful for Tsubasa's help and surprising maturity in this matter.
Upon entering the limousine, I allowed myself to drown in my reflections for the day as Tsubasa rested her head on my shoulder.
Maybe love wasn't something that could be understood through logic or observation but rather something that could only be felt through the heart, an instinctual feeling, so to speak.
It simply cannot be rationally explained.
After all, plenty of books have mentioned that love is irrational.
Perhaps someday, I, too, would come to understand what it truly meant to love someone. But for now, I was content with the small steps I had taken towards that understanding and the wonderful memories I had made with Tsubasa.
As the limousine drove us back to our respective homes, I couldn't help but think about the future. Would Tsubasa still feel the same way about me once she understood that I might never truly understand love? Would I be able to reciprocate her feelings someday? Or would we drift apart as time passed?
But then I remembered Tsubasa's words, "I will be waiting for you, Kiyotaka-senpai," and I couldn't help but feel a little remorseful.
Knowing how genuine the people around me are... increased the self-loathing that I'm feeling.
Their intentions toward me are as pure as it gets, and yet, I couldn't think of them as anything other than tools. Despite my intention to protect them, the fact of the matter is, I am still unable to reciprocate Tsubasa or Eiichiro's warmth.
It's rather out of character for me, but I actually feel glad about it. That must simply mean that I'm starting to be more human than a monster.
As the limousine pulled up to Tsubasa's house, I gently shook her awake.
"Tsubasa, we're here."
She stirred, rubbing her eyes before nodding sleepily.
"Thank you for today, Kiyotaka-senpai. It was really fun."
"I'm glad you enjoyed it, Tsubasa."
As Tsubasa exited the car, I watched her disappear into her house before the limousine pulled away, taking me back to the mansion.
As I lay in bed that night, I thought about the events of the day and the feelings that had been awakened within me.
Human emotions really are a double-edged sword, aren't they?
The feelings that have been conjuring within me for the past four months made me realize just how it can be both your greatest weapon and greatest liability.
Bzzt
Upon picking up my phone, I noticed that it had two message notifications coming from Matsushita.
[22:30:22 Matsushita Chiaki] "I had plans with friends," he says.
[22:30:28 Matsushita Chiaki] Mou~ you could have just said you're on a date, you know?
[22:30:36] Well... Tsubasa is a friend.
[22:30:48 Matsushita Chiaki] Is that so? Then you better make it up to me next week, mister! Give me a bouquet too! 😝
[22:31:00] Were you stalking us earlier?
[22:31:30 Matsushita Chiaki] How rude! I was simply observing an interesting sight earlier.
So I was right.
The presence that I had been feeling earlier was that of Matsushita.
Did someone tell her I was out on a date or was it purely coincidental?
I'll make it up to her.
(Narrator Voice: That day, Ayanokōji Kiyotaka learned the futility of lying to a woman)
