Chapter 16 – Phenex

"Come on, Saji-kun! Don't tell me you're already exhausted! We've only run for fifteen kilometers so far! Show me some spirit!"

"Ryuugamine…if we keep this up…you'll see my spirit…leaving my body…and ascending to the heavens!"

Genshirou wheezed out, sweat dripping from his body and a haggard expression on his face, prompting Takeshi to chuckle. The two Pawns were currently running through the woods surrounding Kuoh Town as part of their daily training. Takeshi would usually do this on his own, but over the past week, Genshirou had insisted on joining him.

"Weren't you the one who wanted to become stronger?" Takeshi said after the two had stopped. "This is the first step. Without a good physical condition and endurance, we won't last long in a protracted fight. That's why basic training is of paramount importance."

"I get that…but don't expect me to follow your training schedule to the letter just yet." Genshirou said, taking a big sip from his water bottle and pouring the rest all over his head. "You've started earlier than me after all, so you're fitter."

"That's fair." Takeshi said. "However, peaceful times such as these are the best opportunity to push yourself beyond the limit. Because if you're not ready when the time comes to act, you'll certainly regret it."

"Speaking from experience, Ryuugamine?"

"You could say that." Takeshi said as he picked up a nearby boulder and started lifting it. "I've had a few close calls so far after all. I'm surprised though. How come you came to me and asked to help you train? Shouldn't you have talked to Sona-senpai about that? I'm sure she'd put you through the wringer."

"Student President is already doing that without me asking for it…" Genshirou shuddered for a bit while stretching before continuing. "However, I want to grow even stronger, strong enough to stand by her side and support her. That's why, I thought studying how my fellow Pawn trains might prove useful to me down the line."

"Hoh?" A sly smile appeared on Takeshi's face. "For her sake, you say? Saji-kun…do you perhaps have feelings for Sona-senpai?"

"E-Eh!? T-That's…!"

"Never mind, I got my answer." Takeshi grinned, tossing the boulder aside and throwing his arm around Genshirou's shoulder. "But Sona-senpai, eh? You've got a long and steep road ahead of you, Saji-kun. Much like President and Akeno-san, she seems to be shunning most men. You're going to have to pull off something really impressive to get her to notice you."

"I know…but I won't fret over this." Genshirou said, clenching his fist. "I'll just focus on doing what I can right now, namely training my body and Sacred Gear."

"Speaking of which, I don't think I've seen your Sacred Gear yet." Takeshi said. "What does it do?"

"Watch and be amazed!"

Genshirou said as he stuck his left hand forward. Following a flash of light, a small black bracer in the shape of deformed lizard head with violet gems for eyes appeared on it. The lizard head opened its mouth wide and shot out a tongue-shaped line that wrapped itself around Takeshi's right arm.

"This is…" Takeshi frowned, feeling like he was slowly being drained. "Are you absorbing my power? Is this your Sacred Gear's ability?"

"Yes." Genshirou said, detaching the line from Takeshi's hand. "My Sacred Gear is called Absorption Line, and it allows me to restrain my opponents and absorb their power through my lines. Pretty neat, huh?"

[That sensation…] Nidhogg's voice echoed in Takeshi's head. [It's eerily familiar. Similar to us…yet not at the same time. Ah, I see. Now I remember. It's that failure, Vritra of the black flame.]

[Vritra the gloomy!] Grendel laughed. [It's been ages! Yes, even I can feel the fragment of that loser's soul within the brat's Sacred Gear. Being dubbed an Evil Dragon simply for fighting alongside the Asuras against Indra, how low can you get? A true Evil Dragon would pursue battle regardless of silly things like familial ties, honor, duty or debts!]

"Vritra…?" Takeshi frowned. "The Prison Dragon Vritra? Absorption Line contains a fragment of the Black Dragon King's soul…?"

"Eh…what are you talking about, Ryuugamine?" Genshirou said, looking confused. "What's this about Vritra being in my Sacred Gear?"

"Apparently, Nidhogg and Grendel felt the presence of Vritra's soul when you used Absorption Line on me." Takeshi explained. "Also, their opinion of him isn't very high apparently, which means he's instantly on my 'good guys' list."

"I have…Vritra's power?" Genshirou said, staring at Absorption Line. "Student President said she felt a Dragon's aura coming from it…but I never thought a Dragon King's power resided within my Sacred Gear. Hey, isn't that awesome!? Maybe my dream to rise higher won't be as impossible as I thought! With the Dragon King's strength, I—"

"Hold your horses, Saji-kun." Takeshi cut him off. "This is just a fragment of his soul from what the Evil Dragons said, not the whole thing. It's unlikely you'll be able to channel Vritra's full power, only a portion of it."

"So much for my enthusiasm…" Genshirou deflated, a dejected expression on his face. "I should have known it wouldn't be that simple."

"It's not that bad." Takeshi said, trying to cheer up his fellow Pawn. "Even in this state, your Sacred Gear is already at the uncommon level. If you train with it and learn to make full use of it, you should be able to grow in strength much faster compared to the average Devil."

"I guess you have a point…" Genshirou said, his spirits lifted somewhat. "So, should we move on to sparring?"

"No, it's almost time for school." Takeshi said, pointing at the rising sun behind them. "I can't afford to be late, otherwise princess will get irritable, and I'm not in the mood to deal with that first thing in the morning."

"Princess?" Genshirou raised an eyebrow. "You mean Rias-senpai?"

"No." Takeshi said, spreading his wings. "Tomorrow same time?"

"If it's alright with you." Genshirou said. "See you at school, Ryuugamine!"

"Likewise!"

Takeshi said as he took off, heading towards Kuoh Academy. While he could have used the teleportation magic circle, he still preferred to fly towards his destination whenever possible. Riding his motorcycle was a close second. After a brief flight, he arrived at the old school building and landed in front of the entrance.

"Right on time. Glad to see you haven't forgotten about me."

The one who had said that was Pandora, who was standing in front of the old school building. The Gremory Peerage's newest member was wearing Kuoh Academy's female uniform, which, coupled with her beauty, gave her an alluring aura that would captivate almost anyone looking at her.

"I could never forget about you, my dear princess." Takeshi made an exaggerated bow while smiling. "Shall we proceed to school?"

"Stop that." Pandora slapped his arm with an annoyed expression. "To begin with, what's with you calling me princess all the time?"

"As your escort to and from school, I should show you the proper respect." Takeshi grinned. "It's only natural."

"Escort?" Pandora raised an eyebrow. "You think too highly of yourself. I'd say you're closer to…pest repeller. Yes, that's a good comparison."

"Well, when you take into account how several of our classmates tend to behave around girls, maybe that's not so far from the truth." Takeshi shrugged. "But a pest repeller…that hurts my self-esteem a bit."

"…I'm sorry." Pandora said, a gloomy expression on her face. "I shouldn't joke around when I'm causing trouble for you again. I mean, President is having you escort me all the time in school to have your draconic aura of terror suppress my Charm in case it starts leaking out and affects the surrounding students. You shouldn't—"

"OK, stop right there." Takeshi cut off Pandora. "Don't start a self-deprecating monologue over nothing. I've got no problem escorting you until we manage to find a solution for your powers. Besides, spending more time with a friend is never a bother."

"Friend…" Pandora said, a small smile on her face. "I like the sound of that. I've never had something like that before…"

"Never too late for that." Takeshi said. "Now, let's go. We don't want to be late."

"Right."

Pandora nodded, following after Takeshi. As the morning sun bore down on them, the young girl winced, rubbing her hands together.

"Still not used to the sun?"

"Not really." Pandora said. "Feels like numerous small needles are prickling my skin. How long does it take for a newborn Devil to adapt?"

"It shouldn't take much longer, so hang in there and be patient in the meantime."

Upon arriving at the high school division's building, a large number of students started murmuring among themselves as usual.

"Othrys-san is radiant this morning as well…"

"Ah, I feel blessed that I am a student of this school…"

"True. Where else could you see a peerless beauty like this?"

"Almost peerless. Gremory-senpai and Himejima-senpai are still everyone's number one and two…"

"Sorry, but Othrys-san is at least number two for me. A foreigner's charm is on a different level…"

"But why is Ryuugamine next to her again…?"

"Isn't he satisfied with the rest of the Occult Research Club's girls…?"

"We thought that bastard Kiba was the greatest threat, but maybe the true last boss is Ryuugamine after all…?"

"If he sinks his claws into Othrys-san as well, I will never forgive him!"

"You said it!"

"Ah, it's so nice to see that some things never change around here." Takeshi smiled, ignoring the glares from the surrounding students. "However, I'm curious as to why you chose Othrys as your last name. You could have used any random last name."

"For better or for worse, that secluded place was the only home I knew." Pandora said. "Not to mention, I had a few pleasant memories there among the bleakness, so I figured that was the best way to honor them. More importantly, you're supposed to be my escort, right? Do your job properly then."

Pandora said as she edged closer to Takeshi, an anxious expression on her face. From what he could tell, she was still not used to crowds and was still afraid about losing control. He grabbed her hand, paying no heed to the shocked and resentful expressions from the students, squeezing it lightly as if to reassure her. The effect was instantaneous as Pandora seemed to relax.

"As you wish, princess." Takeshi said. "This lowly Evil Dragon User will become your shield if need be."

"I told you to cut that out…"

Pandora grumbled, but didn't seem too irritated. The two of them reached their classroom almost at the same time as Yuuto.

"Ah, if it isn't Pandora-san and Takeshi-kun." Yuuto said, taking note of their entwined hands. "I see you're getting along well this morning too. That's nice…though I don't know if Akeno-san and Koneko-chan would share my sentiments."

"Morning, Yuuto."

"Good morning, Kiba-san."

Takeshi and Pandora greeted their fellow Devil, with Takeshi letting go of her hand as they entered their classroom. Pandora had a slightly disappointed expression as she clenched the hand that was holding Takeshi's close to her chest, but her expression returned to normal as the three Devils took their seats. Thanks to Rias's arrangements, not only had Pandora been placed in the same class as her fellow Devils, she also sat next to Takeshi, with Yuuto seated in front of him.

"It's been almost two weeks ever since you joined this group, Pandora-san." Yuuto said, turning around to face the other two Devils. "Any problems so far with your contracts or with school life in general?"

"No, it's all been going well so far." Pandora said. "Far better than I deserve. At they very least, I'm glad I was able to aid Minano recover from the tragedy I caused in my own small way."

"That's great to hear."

"On an unrelated note, has anyone else noticed that President is acting a bit…strange recently?" Takeshi asked. "She seems distracted and somewhat distant, as if she's troubled by something. You guys know anything about that?"

"No…although now that you mention it, she was indeed a bit off at times." Yuuto frowned. "Maybe it has something to do with the aftermath of our battle against the Fallen Angels? The elders might be giving her more grief over that whole affair."

"Over my mess, you mean…" Takeshi let out a dispirited sigh. "Don't try to sugarcoat it or spare my feelings, Yuuto. I know I screwed up big time there."

"You sure did." Pandora said. "However, we're all here because of that, so it's not all bad. Don't beat yourself up over it. What's done is done."

"I'll…try not to."

"Ah, before I forget, President asked to see you and Pandora after classes are over." Yuuto said. "She said to meet her at your house, Takeshi."

"My house?" Takeshi frowned. "What for?"

"She didn't say." Yuuto said. "You'll have to ask her that yourself."

At that moment, the trio of Issei, Matsuda and Motohama entered the classroom, heading towards the Devil trio.

"Hey there, Othrys-san, Ryuugamine…and pretty boy." Issei greeted the three Devils, scowling a bit at the sight of Yuuto. "Great day we're having today."

"Yes, and seeing Othrys-san always makes it even better and brighter." Matsuda smiled at Pandora. "Ah, being next to a top-class beauty like you is a true blessing for us!"

"Is that so?" Pandora replied in a disinterested tone. "Good for you then."

"Yes, it's true!" Motohama added from the side. "We—"

"Give it a rest, ero trio." Aika cut off Motohama's words, sitting next to Pandora with a sly smirk on her face. "Your desperate efforts are amusing, but you're just wasting your time here. Pandora-san already has her eye on a certain someone. Don't you, Pandora-san?"

"I don't know what you're talking about, Kiryuu-san."

"Right." Aika's smile became wider. "Don't think anyone's missed the fact that you and Ryuugamine seem to be inseparable ever since you transferred here. Why, this morning, you arrived at school while holding hands. Looks like things are coming along nicely."

Pandora's only response was to roll her eyes. Issei and his buddies, on the other hand, had matching anguished expressions on their faces.

"So, it's like that after all…!" Issei hissed. "Ryuugamine, you bastard! Even though you're acting so above it all, you're aiming for a harem after all!? First, it was Koneko-chan, then Gremory-senpai and Himejima-senpai, and now it's the transfer student Othrys-san!? You are the worst, you traitor!"

"Between you and Kiba, there won't be any girls left for us if you two keep going like this and steal all of them!" Matsuda cried out. "Shit! My tears just won't stop running!"

"The blissful school life we dreamed of is in tatters because of you!" Motohama wailed. "How are you going to make it up to us, damn it!?"

"One girl!" Issei grabbed Takeshi's shoulders. "At least introduce us to one girl! That's all we're asking here!"

"Seriously, you three…" Takeshi rubbed his temples, an annoyed expression on his face. "Listen here, and listen well. When it comes to the girls in the club, Yuuto and I are just friends with them. Got it? Don't make me repeat myself all the time for crying out loud."

"It's true." Yuuto added from the side. "Despite appearances, neither Takeshi-kun nor I have girlfriends. That's why, there's no need for you two to get so riled up. We have no intention of 'stealing all the girls' like you said."

"That's right, you three." Aika smirked. "Kiba-kun and Ryuugamine aren't interested in girls because they're an item."

"First time I'm hearing that." Pandora turned to Takeshi, a curious expression on her face. "Is that true, Takeshi? Are you and Kiba-san—"

"We're not!" Takeshi bellowed, frightening all students nearby. "That's just nonsense Kiryuu and certain girls like to spread around! I thought I already warned you about that once before, Kiryuu."

"Isn't that good for you, Pandora-san?" Aika edged closer to Pandora, whispering to her ear. "…That means your love still has a chance."

"Again with that drivel…"

Pandora shook her head in exasperation, though she glanced at Takeshi once before quickly averting her gaze. At that moment, the students took their seats as homeroom was about to begin.

Later on…

"So…just what the Hell is all this?"

Takeshi wondered, his right eye twitching. After classes had finished, he had accompanied Pandora back to his home like Rias had requested. Upon arriving there, the two of them had found the crimson-haired girl waiting for them—along with a large number of boxes that had been piled near the entrance.

"Ah, you're here." Rias said. "Right on time. Takeshi, please be a dear and carry Pandora's belongings to the guest room. Actually, wait, we should discuss this with your parents first."

"Her belongings…?" Takeshi frowned. "What for? Don't tell me…"

"There's only one reason, isn't there?" Rias said. "Pandora will be staying with you."

"Wait a minute, President." Pandora cut in from the side. "That's too sudden. I never said I wanted to further trouble Takeshi like this."

"Oh my, when I asked you who you'd like to stay with in the future, you did say Takeshi, didn't you?" Rias said. "In that case, it's perfect. We can't have you being cooped up in the clubroom all the time, and in order to get familiar with the customs of this country, staying with people of said country is the most optimal solution."

"I thought that was something for the future, not for the literal next day." Pandora said. "It's way too dangerous. If I end up harming Takeshi's parents, I—"

"That won't happen as long as I'm here, so don't worry about it." Takeshi said. "I'm curious though, why my place?"

"I feel…a bit more relaxed around you compared to the rest of the Occult Research Club's members." Pandora said, turning to Rias. "No offense, President."

"None taken."

"Plus, since you're escorting me to school every morning, I thought this would be more convenient for both of us." Pandora said. "But if this is too much trouble, just say the word. Actually, it's probably very troublesome for you, and I'm causing problems again…"

"You are not." Takeshi said. "Stop assuming the worst all the time. I don't mind you staying here, but what about my parents? Has any of you informed them about this?"

"Like I said, no, but seeing as they're both here, there's no time like the present." Rias said. "Shall we?"

"Might as well get it over with."

Takeshi said, unlocking the front door and beckoning at Rias and Pandora to come inside.

"Ara, if it isn't Takeshi, Rias-san and…I don't believe I've met you before, dear." Shiori said upon taking note of the three youths. "Is she a new friend of yours, Takeshi?"

"Yes, this is Pandora Othrys, a transfer student from Greece that came here through an exchange program." Takeshi introduced her, using the fake background Rias's family had prepared for her. "She joined the Occult Research Club a few days ago."

"My, I see the Occult Research Club is slowly turning into a gathering ground for beauties." Shiori smiled. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Pandora-san. I'm Ryuugamine Shiori, Takeshi's mother."

"Nice to meet you."

Pandora bowed at Shiori.

"Oh, is that another prospective bride I see there?" Hiroto said as he stepped into the living room. "Good for you, Takeshi! The new school year has barely started, yet you're already bringing new ones in!"

"Oh, for the love of…" Takeshi groaned. "Don't make it sound like I'm some sort of predator, Dad. It's already enough of a pain that I have to deal with my classmates and their dumb rumors. I don't need this from my family as well. Pandora, if you feel like changing your mind about staying here, now's the time."

"Staying here…?" Shiori muttered. "What are you talking about?"

"Hiroto-san, Shiori-san, as Takeshi mentioned just now, Pandora is a transfer student with little to no knowledge regarding Japan's customs." Rias said. "Therefore, the school thought it would be best if she stayed with a Japanese family to learn about all that firsthand. Since Pandora feels more comfortable around Takeshi compared to the rest of our club's members, I thought it would be best if she stayed with you. Of course, if you find this a bother, I—"

"No bother at all!" Hiroto said in an enthusiastic manner. "We'll be glad to have Pandora-san stay here. Who knows, maybe that son of mine will finally break out of his shell and start dating at long last if he's living with such an attractive girl twenty-four seven!"

"Dear, please don't say stuff that might frighten the poor girl." Shiori glared at her husband. "She might think we're trying to take advantage of her. Reign in that exuberance of yours a bit."

"I can't help it. I want to see my grandchildren before I'm old and gray…"

Hiroto pouted. Shiori then turned to Pandora, who was waiting with an anxious look on her face.

"Like my husband said, we don't have a problem with you staying here if you wish to." Shiori said. "It's just…he and I will be away from home often due to our work, so you'll often be alone with Takeshi here. Now, I know my son is an upstanding individual, but if you feel uncomfortable with that, perhaps you should search for another family to accommodate you."

"There's no problem." Pandora said. "I trust Takeshi. He has already helped me a lot so far."

"Has he now?" Shiori smiled. "I see. That's good to hear. In that case, welcome to the Ryuugamine residence, my dear. We'll be glad to have you here for as long as necessary."

"What Shiori said." Hiroto grinned. "Take your time and get used to Japan's customs in your own pace. Who knows, you might end up staying here for much longer than you first thought. Would be nice if this home stay ends up counting as bride training as well…"

"Dear, you're getting ahead of yourself again." Shiori said, shooting a warning glare at her husaband. "Do you have your belongings with you, Pandora-san? Or should Takeshi and Hiroto come to your place and help you move?"

"Since I anticipated your favorable answer, I had my people bring them here and leave them in your front yard." Rias said. "I hope you don't mind."

"Not at all." Shiori said. "Takeshi, Hiroto, could you please take care of that?"

"On it."

Takeshi said as he and Hiroto stood up and stepped outside. While they were moving the boxes to the guest room, Shiori approached Pandora with a sly smile on her face.

"So, now that the men are busy, how about we have a little girl-to-girl chat?" Shiori asked. "Are you actually interested in Takeshi? Is that why you wanted to stay here? To get closer to him?"

"Why is everyone saying that…?" Pandora sighed in exasperation. "I don't see him that way. Even if I did…I wouldn't dare get involved with him in that manner. I don't have the right, and he deserves better than someone like me."

"You obviously have your circumstances, so I won't pry into them." Shiori said. "But the heart can be very troublesome. I know that from experience. No matter how much you try to reason with it, it will always go wherever it wishes. If you deny whatever feelings you may have, it will only lead to needless pain and agony."

"Me getting even closer to your son would have the same result…" Pandora muttered in a low tone before speaking in a louder one. "I…will keep that in mind, Shiori-san."

"Either way, while I'm not as boisterous as Hiroto about that, I do hope my son will be able to find himself a good girlfriend, and maybe settle down with her after a few years." Shiori said. "If Pandora-san isn't interested, what about you, Rias-san?"

"That…would be impossible." Rias spoke with a melancholic expression. "Maybe, if things were a little different…but the current circumstances would never allow it."

Before Shiori could further question Rias about that, Hiroto and Takeshi returned to the living room.

"Those were quite a lot of boxes." Takeshi said. "Where did you get all this stuff from, Pandora? I thought you had…travelled lightly."

"Akeno-san." Pandora said. "She got a bit too enthusiastic when we went out shopping for clothes and other necessities."

"I bet she did." Takeshi chuckled. "In any case, you're all set. You can unpack whenever you feel like it. If you need some help with that as well, I—"

"No, you've done enough already." Pandora bowed at the two men. "Thank you. I'll handle the rest."

"I should get going." Rias said. "While club activities are suspended for today, I expect both of you to be ready for tomorrow's workload."

"Of course."

"You got it, President."

"Since you're here, how about you stay for dinner, Rias-san?" Shiori asked. "We'd be glad to have you here again."

"Thank you for the invitation, but unfortunately, I can't stay." Rias said. "There are certain matters I need to take care of today. Perhaps some other time."

"Let me escort you outside, President."

Takeshi said. Once the two young Devils were in the front yard and away from his parents, Takeshi turned to Rias.

"The Devils' Job for today is cancelled?" Takeshi asked. "I didn't hear about that. What brought this on?"

"Oh, I'm sorry…" Rias sighed, rubbing her temples. "That was my mistake. I sent a message to Yuuto and Koneko earlier about that, but forgot to inform you and Pandora. A certain…issue has come up, and I need to speak with my family about it. That's why I'm putting our Devils' Job on hold for today. Sona and her Peerage will handle the requests for us."

"President…does that certain issue have something to do with why you're so distracted as of late?" Takeshi said. "Is there some sort of problem? If there is, I want to help you in any way I can."

"Help me in any way…"

Rias approached Takeshi with slow steps, unease, doubt, fear and desperation clouding her eyes. She stopped at a distance where their bodies could almost touch, her warm breath hitting his face. Takeshi couldn't help but be a bit flustered at the close proximity of the admittedly beautiful crimson-haired girl.

What's going on here? Takeshi thought. If I wouldn't know any better, I'd think Rias was coming on to me or something… Wait, could she actually…?

Rias raised her hand a bit, but it fell to the side again, a bitter smile appearing on her face as she took a couple of steps back while muttering.

"No… I couldn't possibly do this to you… Cause even more trouble…"

"President?" Takeshi asked, feeling confused. "That was…"

"My apologies, Takeshi." Rias smiled. "I lost myself a bit there, but everything is alright now. I'll see you tomorrow, so make sure to not be late."

"Oi, wait a minute, President!"

Before he could question her, Rias had turned around and left the Ryuugamine residence with hurried steps.

"What was that all about…?" Takeshi wondered. "There's definitely something wrong with President though. What could it be though…?"

Lost in his musings, Takeshi failed to notice that Pandora had witnessed that short exchange while hiding behind the front door. The black-haired girl brought her hand to her chest, a perplexed expression on her face.

"Why am I acting like that just from seeing these two together…?" Pandora whispered. "And this tugging in my heart… Hah, look at me making a fuss over nothing. This constant nagging from everyone about Takeshi is really getting to me…"

Pandora shook her head as she stepped inside the house once again, with Takeshi following suit shortly afterwards.

The next day…

"I see. President was acting strange yesterday as well. If she's troubled by something, it must be related to the House of Gremory."

Yuuto said as he, Takeshi and Pandora were making their way to the Occult Research Club once classes were finished.

"That's what I thought too." Takeshi said. "But if that's the case, I don't know if there's much we can do. She was on the verge of telling me something, but backed off at the last second."

"If President isn't willing to tell us, maybe Akeno-san would know what's going on?" Pandora suggested. "She's next to President at all times as her Queen, so maybe she has heard something we haven't."

"It's possible." Yuuto said. "We should—"

Just as they were about to enter the clubroom, Yuuto froze all of a sudden. Pandora and Takeshi also flinched, feeling an unfamiliar aura oozing out of the clubroom.

"To think I only picked up her presence just now…! Impeccable as always…"

Yuuto muttered with a serious expression. Takeshi and Pandora looked at each other, matching quizzical expressions on their faces as Yuuto knocked on the door and stepped instead. The two of them followed after him, only to come across a surreal scene.

"Ah, I see everyone is here."

The one who had spoken was a beautiful young woman Takeshi had never encountered before. She appeared to be in her early twenties with red eyes and back-length silver hair that featured a long braid on each side, while the rest was let down and ended in twin braids. She was dressed in a maid outfit, giving off a calm, yet intense atmosphere.

Next to her, Rias had a very unpleasant expression while glaring at said maid. Akeno was smiling like usual, but her smile wasn't reaching her eyes and she was letting out a cold vibe. Koneko was sitting on a chair in the corner, eating her snacks as quietly as possible and looking like she was trying not to call attention to herself. Upon noticing Takeshi, she rushed to his side with hurried steps.

"Allow me to introduce myself." The silver-haired woman bowed. "My name is Grayfia, a maid in service to the Gremory Family. It's a pleasure to meet you, newcomers to Rias-sama's Peerage."

"A maid…?"

Takeshi wondered. Despite appearance, he could tell that the woman before him was much more than a mere servant.

[The power emanating from her…it's of the highest class of Devil.] Nidhogg said. [Definitely Ultimate-class at least. How interesting. She would make for a fine adversary.]

[She sure would!] Grendel said. [Now that's my type of woman! I'm certain I would have tons of fun crushing her under my heel! Oh, the agony of not having a physical body!]

"It's nice to meet you, Grayfia-san." Takeshi said, ignoring the Evil Dragons. "I'm Ryuugamine Takeshi, President's Pawn."

"I'm Pandora Othrys, President's Knight." Pandora said. "It's good to meet you."

"So, it's just as the family head told me." Grayfia said, appraising the two youths. "Both the infamous Evil Dragon User and the Calamity Witch have joined Rias-sama's Peerage. No wonder everyone is so frightened. Pandora-sama aside, Takeshi-sama seems to be letting out a decent amount of corrupted draconic aura. I heard that two Evil Dragons have awakened within you. I shudder to think what will happen should all seven awaken…"

"Sorry about that." Takeshi said, doing his best to draw the draconic aura back in. "These guys are acting up again. So, why is a maid from the Gremory family here? Did something happen?"

"You could say that." Grayfia said. "Should I explain the situation to everyone, Rias-sama?"

"No, I will do so myself." Rias said, waving her hand in a dismissive manner. "The truth is, I—"

Rias's words were interrupted as the large magic circle on the clubroom shone. Much to Takeshi's surprise, an unfamiliar symbol was superimposed over the Gremory family's crest, which meant that someone not belonging to the family had connected to it and was trying to teleport in the clubroom.

"…Phenex."

Yuuto muttered, prompting Takeshi to raise an eyebrow at that.

"Phenex?" Takeshi said. "One of the seventy-two Pillars? What's a member of the Phenex family doing here?"

Before anyone could answer, flames erupted from the magic circle, causing almost everyone to shield their faces and close their eyes due to the intense heat. Immediately afterwards, the silhouette of a man appeared within the flames. With a wave of his hand, he scattered them, revealing his form.

"Riser…"

Rias said through gritted teeth, while Riser smiled.

"Ah, it's been some time since I last came to the human world." Riser said while looking around. "Quaint as always, I see."

Upon catching sight of Rias, Riser's smile became wider.

"My dear Rias, it's been so long." Riser said. "You've become even more charming and beautiful compared to the last time I saw you. Why, I am certain you could give your honored ancestors a run for their money at this point. All Gremory ladies were outstanding beauties, but you're well on your way to surpass them."

"Thank you for your kind words…"

Rias said, looking irritated instead of flattered. From what Takeshi could tell, she didn't welcome this fellow's presence at all. Riser didn't seem to mind though as he resumed talking.

"I assume you know why I'm here, right?" Riser said. "After all, Sirzechs-sama's Queen is present."

"Unfortunately, I do."

"Splendid." Riser said as he entwined his arm with hers. "In that case, we shouldn't waste any time. The date of the ceremony has been decided, so we should check out the venue as well. I've narrowed it down to three spots, but I'd like your opinion on the final pick. It's our big day after all."

"…Let go of me, Riser."

Rias pulled her arm away, a severe expression on her face as she glared at Riser. The blond-haired man merely chuckled, looking amused.

"Feisty as always." Riser said. "That's good. A woman should have a bit of fire in her."

Takeshi narrowed his eyes at that scene. Riser's overly familiar attitude was starting to get on his nerves. He had half a mind to take out Mayhem Striker and cut off his arm. Or maybe split his head in half.

[Yes, let's paint the walls of this clubroom with his brain matter!] Grendel laughed. [Or rip out his entrails and hang him with them! So many fascinating possibilities!]

"However, everything has a limit." Riser said as he approached Rias. "Stop this pointless temper tantrum and—"

"That's far enough."

Takeshi cut off Riser, stepping between him and Rias.

"You're bothering my master." Takeshi said, a cold expression on his face. "I must ask that you stop this irritating behavior."

"A Low-class Devil is trying to lecture me?" Riser sneered. "Know your place, servant. To begin with, do you not know who I am? Even for a Reincarnated Devil, your knowledge is seriously lacking. Rias, have you not informed your servants about me?"

"I haven't told them because there was no need." Rias said. "I saw no reason to fill their heads with useless information."

"Oh my, how harsh."

Riser laughed. At that moment, Grayfia stepped in.

"Takeshi-sama, while your loyalty is commendable, this is not your place to interfere." Grayfia said. "This man is Riser Phenex-sama, a Pure-blooded Devil and the third son of the House of Phenex, one of the venerated seventy-two Pillars. Moreover…he is the fiancé of the next head of the House of Gremory, Rias-sama."

"Fiancé?" Takeshi seemed astonished, pointing at Riser. "This wannabe playboy is your future husband, President? Your family couldn't find anyone better than this ill-mannered, sloppily-dressed guy? Talk about low standards…"

This prompted the members of Rias's Peerage to snicker, with Rias herself fighting back a smile.

"You had best watch that mouth of yours, Low-class Devil." Riser growled. "Other nobles have killed Reincarnated Devils like you for far lesser insults. For speaking like that against me, maybe I should teach you a lesson in pain."

"Don't you dare touch my servant, Riser." Rias glared at Riser, stepping in front of Takeshi. "Otherwise, you'll be dealing with me next."

"If he minds his manners, then I shall not raise my hand against him." Riser said as he sat down on the sofa. "Come, sit next to me, my lovely Rias."

Rias sat on the other sofa instead, only for Riser to sigh and get up, sitting next to her.

"Really, you don't have to make this more difficult for yourself." Riser said as he took a sip from one of the two steaming cups placed on the table by Akeno. "An exquisite and fragrant taste. As always, the tea made by Rias's Queen is superb."

"…Thank you very much for your kind words."

Akeno said with a cold smile that would have most people running for the hills. Once again, Riser was undeterred as he drank his tea while caressing Rias's hair and shoulders. The crimson-haired girl was shooting him murderous glares as she kept smacking his hands away. Takeshi was feeling more and more tempted to just blow his head off, a sentiment shared by the other Peerage members as far as he could see.

"That's enough, Riser!" Rias exploded as she stood up, finally having had enough. "I've said it before and I'll say it again; I have no intention of marrying you!"

"Yes, I've heard several variations of this quite a few times so far…" Riser sighed. "However, that won't do at all, Rias. You are well aware of the advantages this marriage brings to both families, as well as its necessity. The situation of your household is rather serious after all."

"That's none of your concern!" Rias shouted. "Besides, the agreement was that I would be free until I graduated from university in the human world! My father and the other members of my family are rushing this way too much!"

"Your freedom will not be significantly affected." Riser said. "You can finish college at your leisure, and you can continue your activities in the human world as you have. From my side, I don't intend to restrict you in any manner. But your father and mother are very worried about the future of the Gremory family. The number of Pure-blooded Devils is still very low after the Great War. Even though the armistice still holds for now, there's no telling when the Fallen Angels and Angels might decide to resume hostilities. Not to mention, Devil lives are still lost due to the frequent skirmishes."

"And that's why Pure-blooded descendants are necessary." Rias said. "To preserve the ancient bloodlines and prevent the extinction of more noble houses. I am aware of all that, as well as our families' desire to create superior offspring inheriting both our abilities through our union. Their intent was always transparent."

"Then you understand the importance of our future children." Riser said. "The Reincarnated Devils are growing in strength and number throughout the Underworld, something that could make us lose our standing in society. I won't deny that they play an important part in preserving the Underworld, but they also represent a potential danger to us nobles. That's why, bolstering the number of purebloods is of paramount importance. You and I have been chosen for this task. Not to mention, this will secure the continued existence of the House of Gremory."

"My house's existence has never been at stake." Rias said. "It's true that my brother abandoned the Gremory name when he ascended to the position of Lucifer, but there is still me and my nephew. He can still inherit the house even if I'm unavailable."

"That's true, but I wouldn't call your house's situation secure by any means." Riser said. "At least not when you compare it to the House of Phenex. Apart from me, there are my two older brothers and my younger sister, and my older brother Ruval already has a son. It will be extremely difficult for us to go extinct."

"So, out of the kindness of their hearts, the House of Phenex decided to sell off their third son to help out the poor Gremory family." Rias let out a lopsided smile. "Is that it?"

"I don't mind if you see it like that." Riser smirked as he took another sip from his cup. "But you know that there is an even more pressing reason for our marriage to go through, namely the reputation and standing of your house, which have taken a serious hit thanks to your recent actions."

Takeshi winced, feeling as if someone had just punched him in the stomach. He had a pretty good idea what Riser was going to say next.

"…What are you talking about?"

"Do I have to spell it out, Rias?" Riser asked. "There have been more than a few unkind opinions about your recent preemptive attack on the Fallen Angels, as well as your…questionable choices when it comes to your most recent servants."

Riser glanced at Takeshi and Pandora once before turning to Rias again.

"Do you know the sorts of rumors that are flying around in noble circles about you?" Riser said. "They say that Rias Gremory is an irresponsible brat that's way too drunk on her family's power and influence, to the point where she believes the whole world must bend to her whims. She also has an obsessive lust for power, which is why she brought in dangerous individuals in order to use them without regard for the consequences to the Underworld as a whole."

"That's not true!" Takeshi exploded. "President is—!"

"I am only conveying what others have said." Riser cut off Takeshi. "Not to mention, accusations have also been directed at your family for supposedly failing to reign you in. That's why, this marriage will serve to show the Underworld that the House of Phenex remains a steadfast supporter of the House of Gremory, and that your house enjoys our absolute trust. It's a win-win for everyone involved, don't you think? Unless you intend to cause more problems for your house?"

Rias remained silent for a while before answering.

"…I have no intention of destroying my house or drag its name through the mud."

"Oh, to be expected from Rias!" Riser said in an enthusiastic manner. "You do get it after all. In that case, we should quickly—"

"However, that doesn't mean I intend to marry you, Riser." Rias cut off Riser. "Even noble Devils like us have the right to choose our partner. As for mine and my house's reputation, I intend to restore it on my own. I don't need your help, or the help of the House of Phenex."

Riser's expression morphed into a sneer as he stood up, a sharp glint in his eyes.

"…You know, Rias, I have been very tolerant in regards to your selfishness and stubbornness." Riser said. "However, that insinuation that I'm not enough for you is rubbing me the wrong way. I am a Devil from the great House of Phenex, and I will not stand being treated like a lesser being. It's bad enough that I had to come to this decayed world filled with the humans' stench. This filthy fire and wind around here, I can't stand it."

"That sounds like a personal problem to me." Rias glared at Riser. "You're welcome to return to the Underworld any time you wish."

"Oh, I will return alright." Riser smiled. "But you will be coming with me one way or another. Even if it means using force or turning your servants to ashes!"

All Reincarnated Devils present felt a chill going down their spines as Riser directed his killing intent at them. An overwhelming amount of pressure was exuding from his body, causing everyone to wince as they dropped into their stances.

[Oh, we're doing this after all!?] Grendel said in an enthusiastic manner. [Bring it on! I haven't plucked a phoenix in ages!]

[This pompous fool thinks himself superior to us?] Nidhogg snorted. [The world has truly become overrun by idiots in our absence.]

While the Evil Dragons spoke, Riser's whole body had started emitting flames, which took the shape of two flaming wings behind his back. The intensifying demonic power and heat was making almost everyone in the room sweat bullets. In response, Rias also flared up her demonic power, as if seeking to overpower her adversary. But in the midst of this explosive atmosphere, Grayfia stepped forward.

"Rias-sama, Riser-sama, that's enough out of you." Grayfia said, her voice even. "If you do not desist, I will be forced to intervene for the sake of Sirzechs-sama's honor."

The effect was instantaneous as both High-class Devils relaxed, reigning in their demonic power. The Reincarnated Devils also let out a collective sigh of relief, relaxing themselves.

"If the Strongest Queen says this much, then I have no choice but to restrain myself…" Riser sighed. "I have no wish to antagonize Sirzechs-sama's group, which is known far and wide to be comprised of absolute monsters."

Strongest Queen? Takeshi wondered. No wonder her power caught even the Evil Dragons' attention. And a group of monsters… I guess it's only natural that the strongest Devil King would have the strongest group.

"Master, Sirzechs-sama and the members of the House of Phenex knew it would end like this." Grayfia said. "This was supposed to be the last attempt to settle this dispute without causing any more fuss. But since this doesn't seem likely, we shall move on to the last resort agreed by everyone."

"Last resort…you say?" Rias frowned. "What are you talking about, Grayfia?"

"Rias-sama, if you insist on having your way, then how about you do so by proving your strength?" Grayfia said. "Face Riser-sama in a Rating Game, and if you are victorious, the engagement will be dissolved."

"A Rating Game…?"

Takeshi frowned. As far as he knew, only mature Devils were allowed to participate in Rating Games. Rias should only be able to do so after graduating from university at the earliest. And yet…

"I see…" Rias scowled, a murderous expression on her face. "So, this is how Father and the others intend to coerce me. I had my suspicions, but this confirms it. How far do they intend to mess with my life until they're satisfied…!"

"Then, will you refuse to participate in the game as well, Rias-sama?"

"No, this is actually a great opportunity." Rias said with a determined expression. "If they intend to keep interfering with my life, then I'll breakthrough by force. I accept. Let's settle this with a game, Riser."

"Heh, so you aren't running away?" Riser smirked. "That's admirable, but are you sure that's wise? I'm already a mature Devil that has participated in several games and won most of them. Even the games I lost…well, you know the circumstances behind them, and you should be well aware of my clan's power. Even so, you still want to fight?"

"I will." Rias glared at Riser. "I will blow you away for sure and earn my freedom, Riser!"

"Fine then." Riser said. "If you win, you can do whatever you want. But if I win, you have to return to the Underworld and marry me immediately."

"Looks like we got caught up in something big again…"

Yuuto muttered with a bitter smile, prompting all Reincarnated Devils in the room to nod together.

"Understood." Grayfia said. "I, Grayfia, have confirmed the intent of both Riser-sama and Rias-sama. The game will proceed, and I shall be the arbiter for it. Is that acceptable?"

"Yes."

"Yeah."

Both Rias and Riser nodded, glaring at each other the whole time.

"Not exactly the image of a merry couple about to be married…"

Takeshi remarked with a sarcastic expression, prompting Pandora and Akeno to chuckle, while Yuuto and Koneko merely smirked.

"Rias, would the fellows behind you be the entirety of your Peerage?"

Riser pointed at the members of Rias's Peerage while smirking, with Rias narrowing her eyes at him.

"Yes. What about it?"

"Then this match will be even easier than I anticipated." Riser said. "Your Peerage appears moderately skilled, and you have the renowned Priestess of Thunder as your Queen. However, they don't hold a candle to my adorable servants."

Riser snapped his fingers, with the large magic circle in the clubroom lighting up once again. The crest of the Phenex family appeared on it once again, and one flash of light later, fifteen shadows appeared on the Occult Research Club's clubroom. They all stepped into the light, gathering around Riser.

"Well, these are my cute servants."

Riser gestured at the girls gathered around him with a smug expression.

So, he has the maximum number of servants allowed by the Evil Piece system. That means he has the advantage in numbers at least.

Takeshi thought. The girls gathered around Riser were all beauties with various features and gimmicks. There was a girl wearing a Chinese dress, two girls with beast ears, and a pair of girls with identical faces that seemed to be twins. There was also a Yamato Nadeshiko-like girl wearing a kimono, a girl wearing a dress who looked like a European princess and somewhat resembled Riser, a wild-looking older woman who was carrying a sword on her back, a girl wearing a dancer's outfit, and also a mysterious woman wearing a mask that hid half of her face. It was definitely a gathering of every possible fetish known to man, but other than that…

"You've got to be kidding me…"

Takeshi chuckled, unable to contain his mirth. Riser took notice of that and glared at the young Devil.

"Why are you laughing, Evil Dragon User?" Riser said. "Have you gone mad now that you know the possibility of victory is nearly zero for you?"

"No, it's quite the opposite in fact." Takeshi smirked. "I'm sure this little harem of yours there would take top place in a beauty pageant, but when it comes to actually fighting against us…eh, I don't see them lasting that long."

As expected, the girls around Riser didn't take kindly to that.

"You've got a big mouth there, brat!"

"Are you looking down on us, damn it!?"

"Forget the match, we'll pulverize you right now!"

"Girls, girls, relax." Riser made a placating gesture. "Don't rise up to such a cheap provocation. It's obvious that the muddled eyes of the infamous Evil Dragon User can't see your true worth. But seeing as you are raring to go, let's see if your bite can match your bark. Mira!"

"Yes, Riser-sama."

A young girl with blue hair styled in six ponytails and light brown eyes, who was wearing a white obi with a red haori on top of it, stepped forward. Riser pointed at Takeshi.

"Take him down."

"Yes!"

Mira took out a staff and lunged at Takeshi. He sidestepped her blow and summoned Mayhem Striker. As Mira whipped around, going for his head, Takeshi grabbed the staff and clenched it hard, shattering it. Before Mira could react, Mayhem Striker was resting near her neck.

"Bam. You're dead."

Takeshi said at the frightened Mira. He pulled his axe back and grabbed her hand, pushing her towards Riser. The young girl rushed to hide behind her master, with the masked girl rushing to comfort her.

"Acceptable, I suppose." Riser huffed, his eyes narrowed at the sight of Mayhem Striker. "Mira is one of my Pawns, and the weakest member of my Peerage as things stand. If you, Rias's sole Pawn of eight, couldn't beat her at least, then this match would be an utter joke and a total waste of time. It seems you can provide a small challenge after all."

"Oh, we'll provide more than a challenge." Takeshi declared, glaring at Riser. "We'll crush you so completely you won't be able to show your face ever again in society."

"Heh, aren't you confident." Riser laughed. "However, don't overestimate yourself just because you have a destructive Sacred Gear. You should know that those who try to fly too close to the sun are inevitably brought down in the end, Evil Dragon User. That girl next to you should have a story or two about this from her native land."

"That's true." Pandora said. "However, which one of us is Icarus, that's something that remains to be seen."

"The answer is obvious." Riser said, turning to Rias. "How about we conduct this match in ten days from tomorrow, Rias?"

"Ten days?" Rias narrowed her eyes. "Are you trying to give me some sort of handicap, Riser?"

"Not at all." Riser said. "It just that, in ten days' time, all preparations for the marriage ceremony will be complete. That means that once the game is done, we can proceed with the marriage without any further delay. What you want to do during that time is entirely up to you, Rias. Though I would suggest that you prepare yourself. A Rating Game isn't something you can succeed in with your feelings alone."

Rias said nothing, listening quietly to Riser's words.

"I have seen Devils fail spectacularly many times during the games because they couldn't utilize their servants' power to the fullest." Riser continued. "If you do not wish for this to happen to you as well, you'll do your best to improve your servants during that timeframe."

Riser turned to Takeshi next.

"As for you, Evil Dragon User, I suggest you learn to conduct yourself when facing your betters." Riser said. "What's that expression you have in this country? The nail that sticks out gets hammered down? It's something to that effect. Keep in mind that your behavior always reflects on your master."

"I know that without you telling me…"

Takeshi muttered. He understood that Riser was speaking out of concern towards Rias, but being lectured by a haughty fellow like him wasn't sitting well with him.

"I suppose that will be all for now, Rias." Riser said. "The next time we meet will be at the game. Farewell."

After saying that, Riser stepped inside the magic circle along with his servants and vanished from the clubroom.

"I shall be taking my leave as well." Grayfia bowed to Rias. "Sirzechs-sama and the others need to be notified. I wish you all the best of the luck in the upcoming game."

After saying that, Grayfia conjured a teleportation magic circle beneath her feet and vanished in a flash of light. Once she was gone, Rias turned to her servants with an apologetic expression on her face.

"It's as you've heard, everyone." Rias said. "Because of my personal circumstances, we are now being forced into a Rating Game way earlier than we were supposed to. My apologies for putting you through this."

"Ara, ara, what are you saying, President?" Akeno smiled. "We are your servants, but more than that, we're your friends. It's a given that we'll support you in this."

"That's right." Yuuto nodded. "If you don't wish to marry someone like Riser, then it's our duty and obligation to help you out here."

"…His attitude irritates me." Koneko grimaced, clenching her fists. "That flaming chicken is going down."

"I will do my best as well." Pandora said. "Being bound to someone you despise…only few fates are worse than that."

"This mess is partially my fault, isn't it?" Takeshi said with a dispirited expression. "The least I can do is get you out of this no matter what."

"Thank you, everyone." Rias said in a heartfelt tone. "I'm grateful that you're willing to fight for someone like me. But since we're doing this, we will definitely take down Riser and his Peerage!"

[Yes!]

Everyone shouted together in an enthusiastic manner.

"I'll be suspending the Devils' Job for today as well." Rias said. "Yuuto, could you please inform Sona about what just transpired and aske her to cover for us today and for the next ten days as well?"

"Of course."

"Akeno, you come with me." Rias said. "We need to start making some plans, and we also need to choose the location for our training camp. I was thinking we could use the mansion up in the mountains."

"That sounds like a good idea." Akeno said. "A secluded place like that is just what we need to get in the mood."

"Pandora, Takeshi, Koneko, you guys should rest as much as you can today." Rias said. "Because starting tomorrow, we will be having an intense training course."

[Understood!]

Everyone nodded as Rias and Akeno left the clubroom and headed to another room further inside. After the others exited the clubroom, Yuuto split up from them and headed for the Student Council office, while Koneko separated from Takeshi and Pandora at the school entrance, leaving the two of them alone.

"I don't know about you, but right now, what I want most is dinner followed by a nice hot bath." Takeshi said while stretching his arms. "You know, soak in there for an hour or so and pretend all's well and good in the world."

"A bath…?" Pandora said, a slight blush on her face. "It's a little too early for that though. My heart isn't ready…"

"Eh, what are you talking about?" Takeshi frowned. "It's a little too early for what exactly?"

"I heard about it." Pandora said, staring at Takeshi. "In Japan, the rule is to have a bath together…in order to get to know each other better and deepen your relationship… It's a strange custom…but I'll do my best to adapt…"

Pandora's voice trailed off, her blush becoming more prominent. As for Takeshi, he felt a big migraine coming.

"Is that so?" Takeshi said in a low tone. "And who exactly told you this nugget of information?"

"It was Kiryuu-san." Pandora said, and then she frowned. "Wait a minute…"

"Looks like you got it." Takeshi said. "That girl's feeding you nonsense between the actual facts to get a kick out of it. There is such a thing as naked socializing, but that's only between friends of the same gender."

"I should have known better." Pandora grimaced. "Looks like I'll need to study a lot more to avoid being played like a fiddle by her in the future. But I haven't really got the time between contracts and learning about the Devils' world…"

"Don't beat yourself over that." Takeshi said. "We can go over all the info Kiryuu imparted to you later and separate the facts from the lies."

"Thanks, that would be a great help."

Pandora nodded as the two youths made their way back to Takeshi's home.

In the Underworld…

"I see. Rias accepted the game then…"

A handsome young man seemingly in his early twenties that was sitting inside a lavishly decorated office said so as he let out a sigh. He had shoulder length crimson hair and blue eyes, and he was dressed in an ornate outfit.

"That was what you wished though, wasn't it, Sirzechs-sama?" Grayfia, who was standing across him, asked. "Isn't that why you suggested this Rating Game as the last resort? To give Rias-sama a chance to earn her freedom without her reputation taking further hits?"

"I just wish there was a more certain way." Sirzechs said. "Riser-kun is a skilled fighter from what I've seen, and his ability gives him a big advantage. What do you think, Grayfia? Does my sister stand a chance at winning this game?"

"I cannot say for sure." Grayfia said. "From what I could discern, the overall level of Rias-sama's servants is higher than that of Riser-sama's. However, Riser-sama's sister, Ravel-sama, seems to be a member of his Peerage as well. Facing two members of the Phenex clan at the same time might be too much of a hurdle for Rias-sama."

"Indeed." Sirzechs placed his hand on his chin. "What to do…?"

"Not something hasty and ill-advised for starters." Grayfia said with a stern expression. "If you intervene by abusing your authority as a Devil King, you will only end up making things worse for both Rias-sama and the Gremory family. Not to mention, your integrity will be called into question if you act in a selfish manner."

"I know all that." Sirzechs said. "Still, how can I call myself a Devil King if I can't even protect my sister's happiness?"

Grayfia was about to respond when the large magic circle inside the office lit up. Directing her demonic power at it, Grayfia activated it, with the projection of Akeno appearing there.

[Greetings, Sirzechs-sama, Grayfia-san.] Akeno bowed. [I hope I'm not disturbing you.]

"Oh, if it isn't Akeno-kun." Sirzechs smiled. "It's been almost a year since I last saw you. How are you doing?"

[I'm doing fine, thank you.] Akeno said, and then her expression became serious. [I've taken the liberty of contacting you because I need a favor from you. It's about the game between Rias and Riser.]

"If you're asking me to use my authority to cancel it, that's something I cannot do." Sirzechs said. "I wish I could help Rias more, but my position limits me. Arranging this game was all I could do, and it wasn't exactly an easy feat."

[I can imagine that, which is why I want to ask for something else.] Akeno turned to Grayfia and bowed again. [Grayfia-san…is it possible that you could train Rias and the rest of us?]

"Train…you?" Grayfia frowned. "Does Rias-sama know about this?"

[No, this is my own initiative.] Akeno said. [Rias…is too proud and too set on standing on her own to trouble you with this. That's why I'm asking in her stead. If we're to triumph against the Phenex, we need all the help we can get, and who better to help us get stronger than the Strongest Queen?]

"That's actually a great idea!" Sirzechs said in an enthusiastic manner. "It doesn't break any rules, and it will help my sister and her Peerage in the long run as well! Please, Grayfia! I'm begging you here, so help out my dear Ria-tan!"

"But my work—"

"I'll handle things somehow while you're gone." Sirzechs spoke in a hurried manner. "Rias is your family too, Grayfia. Do you really want her to be stuck in a loveless marriage for the rest of her very long life?"

"That would be rather hypocritical of me." Grayfia let out a small smile. "Very well, since Sirzechs-sama insists on this, I will do my best to get all of you ready for the upcoming game."

[Thank you very much, Sirzechs-sama, Grayfia-san!] Akeno said with a bright smile. [I will send you the location of our training camp in a few minutes.]

"Please do."

After Akeno's holographic image vanished, Sirzechs turned to Grayfia.

"I'm grateful that you agreed to this, Grayfia." Sirzechs said with a pleased expression. "Honestly, I should have thought of that myself. With your help, they'll definitely get stronger."

"I don't know if I can do much in ten days, but I will try my best." Grayfia said. "Just make sure to do your job properly in the meantime. If I come back and find out you were slacking off or something to that effect, there'll be Hell to pay."

"I bet there will be…" Sirzechs let out a nervous chuckle. "But the small amount of time is a problem. Then again…perhaps this could work out."

Sirzechs opened his drawer, taking out several documents and spreading them on his office.

"This is…?"

"A report from Ajuka regarding one of the Technology Department's latest breakthroughs." Sirzechs responded to Grayfia's question. "If we use this, we may be able to help Rias even further. Please contact the Technology Department and ask them to prepare the necessary set-up in the location of Rias's training camp. If they ask for a reason, tell them that we're approving their field test."

"I see." Grayfia said after checking the documents. "Understood, Sirzechs-sama."

After Grayfia had left the office, Sirzechs leaned back on his chair with an anxious expression on his face.

"I've done all I can from my side. The rest is up to you, Rias…"

This concludes Chapter 16, which sets up the upcoming Rating Game against Riser. Not a huge difference from canon so far, though there's a major change with Grayfia assuming the role of the Gremory group's trainer. I estimate the next two chapters will focus on the Gremory Peerage's training under her before we move on to the game.

Well, that's all for now. As always, please read, review, favorite, follow, but most of all, enjoy!

See you all next time!
