"Hermione? Are you okay? I can take you back to the castle if..." Remus was interrupted.
"No, it's okay. I'm okay," she said, teary eyed. "It's just...you did. Come, sit over here while your mum and Madame Rosemerta talk."
Nodding, Remus looked at Hope. "Mum, Hermione and I are going to sit over in the corner, just let me know when you're ready to go back home."
Smiling, Hope nodded and turned towards Rosemerta, who had sent two butterbeers over to a table in the corner of the pub.
Taking a deep breath, Hermione held Remus' hand and began her tale.
"...and then I landed here, in nineteen seventy-seven and Professor Dumbledore and I can't figure out why!"
Remus' face was ashen upon learning he died at the hands of a madman, alongside his wife, whom, like Professor Dumbledore, Hermione refused to name.
"So, the Headmaster thinks that if another Hermione Granger appears in the Book of Records in three years, you were supposed to come here all along?" Remus finally asked after calming himself.
"Yes," Hermione said, nodding. "But I still don't know why I'm here!"
"Well," Remus began slowly. "I think we should just make the best of the time you have here, if you are the only Hermione Granger. If you're not the only Hermione, you'll be staying here, with Mum and I, and with my friends."
Hermione flinched when Remus mentioned his friends. "What's wrong, I know you knew my friends before, you know you can trust them, Hermione."
"Well, about that, Remus," she began. "You're going to want to keep calm when I tell you this. It is about one of your friends, and if you feel like you can't keep quiet, then I'm going to have to put up a Muffliato."
Remus nodded and motioned for her to cast the spell. "Okay, Hermione, what's going on? What do you know about my friends?" Taking a deep breath, Hermione started explaining.
"On the thirty-first of October, nineteen eighty-one, James and Lily will be murdered by Volemort, they were hiding under the Fidelus charm, their secret keeper betrayed them," she said, tears forming in her eyes. "Their secret keeper was Peter, they changed from you because of some preconceived notions about werewolves that we all know are utter shite, but they did it anyway and it cost them their lives. Sirius was wrongfully blamed for the murder of Peter and thirteen muggles, but it was Peter that blew up the street and severed his own finger to fake his own death. Sirius spent twelve years in Azkaban, he escaped by using Padfoot, and later escaped being kissed by the dementors thanks to Harry and I, a hippogriff named Buckbeak, and a time turner. Peter hid for years as a rat, living with the Weasleys as the pet of Ron. There's more to his story, but that's all that's relevant right now."
Remus' face was murderous. "I'm going to kill that rat and let Moony eat his carcass."
"Remus, that isn't necessary yet," she said, placing a hand on his arm. "That happened in nineteen eighty-one. It's nineteen seventy-seven. We researched this for months before I got sent here, we're pretty positive that Peter didn't turn to Voldemort until after graduation. We have an entire year to make sure this doesn't happen again."
"Even if it kills him, it's not going to happen again," Remus said, angrily. "Wait, if James and Lily died, Sirius was in prison and Peter was missing, did I raise Harry?"
Sighing, Hermione summoned a shot of Firewhiskey. "You're going to need this first. But no, you didn't raise Harry. Lily's sister and her husband did, and he had a rotten childhood. He didn't receive a single Christmas gift until first year, and that was all thanks to my parents and Molly Weasley."
Remus could hardly contain his anger anymore, "Lily would never leave her child with Petunia!"
"Remus, she didn't, someone took Harry to the Dursley's," Hermione said calmly. "Someone else made the decision after James and Lily were gone. But, if I have my way about it, none of this will ever happen. Between the two of us, we are going to plan and prevent as many of these events as we possibly can."
Remus nodded resolutely. "We're going to start today, when you come back to my house, we're going to write down every event between now and ninety-eight that needs to change."
Hermione smiled and nodded, and a thought suddenly occurred to her. "Remus, there's one death that's going to happen soon that I want to prevent. Someone very close to one of your friends is going to die in two years. These people are not close at the moment, but I want to rectify that."
Remus thought for a moment. "Sirius and Regulus, isn't it? I'm on civil terms with Regulus, he helps Professor Slughorn brew my Wolfsbane for extra credit. I can arrange a meeting."
"Oh, Remus, that would be fantastic!" Hermione said, hugging him. "Oh, your Mum is looking this way, we need to end the spell."
With a wave of his wand, the Muffliato spell was ended and Hermione and Remus stood to join Hope and Madame Rosemerta.
"Ready to go, Remus, Hermione?" Hope asked.
"Mostly, I just need to head up to the castle to grab a few things and let Professor Dumbledore know I'm going to Lupin Keep with you," Hermione said. "If I bring Remus along, it'll only take a moment."
"I'll stay here and gossip a bit more with Rose," Hope said, smiling. "Just pop back in here when you're ready."
Nodding, Remus and Hermione left the pub and walked toward Hogwarts at a leisurely pace, Hermione taking in the sights of Hogsmeade that were so familiar, yet so different, and Remus deep in thought.
"Hey, Hermione?" Remus suddenly asked.
"Yes?"
"Just so you know, Regulus has already joined You-Know-Who," he said nervously. "He's a master Occlumens, so no one except myself and Professor Slughorn knows that he's brewing my potion."
"So am I," Hermione said, smiling softly. "I'd assumed he's already joined that side, trust me though, Remus. He isn't one hundred percent on their side. In two years, Regulus will steal an item that holds a lot of value to Voldemort, and tries to destroy it. If I'm correct about the timeline, Voldemort will be working with Kreacher very soon to conceal that item."
They walked in silence to the castle, soon reaching the front doors. Suddenly, they opened and a smiling headamster greeted them.
"I'd assumed you would be leaving with the Lupins after your meeting, Miss Granger," he said, eyes twinkling brightly. "I took the liberty of having Madame Pomfrey pack your belongings for you."
"Oh! Thank you sir," she said, smiling. "That's exactly what I'll be doing. We really must be going though, sir. I'll see you in September!"
Turning, Remus and Hermione returned to the Broomsticks to Floo back to the Lupin's home.
"I can see you thinking," Remus said softly, as they waited for Madame Rosemerta to activate the Floo. "It's not just mine and Mum's home anymore, it's yours too. Trust me, you're more than welcome."
Smiling brightly, Hermione realized that this Remus knew her just as well as the Professor she'd left laying in the Great Hall. "I know, Remus. I'm so glad to be going home."
