Chapter 32 – Power
"Dear me, this is quite troublesome…"
Alkaid remarked, his expression hidden behind his white and black smiling mask as he struck another incoming Destruction sphere with his cane and caused it to disperse. He and Sirzechs had been exchanging attacks for quite some time, but neither seemed to be getting the upper hand so far.
He's definitely above Katerea in terms of ability. Sirzechs thought as he manipulated several spheres to attack from different directions, only for Alkaid to evade and shoot them down one by one. He also doesn't seem to be using his full power either. My instinct is telling me to take him down here, but if I have to resort to my true form for that…there's no telling how far the collateral damage will spread.
Sirzechs clicked his fingers as several Destruction spheres that were hovering around him expanded, with root-like constructs shooting out of them and aiming for Alkaid. The masked man dashed through the sky with nimble movements, either evading or blocking the incoming roots. Taking advantage of his distracted state, Sirzechs condensed one of his spheres into an even smaller size and shot it at Alkaid. Although he sensed the attack, he wasn't able to avoid it due to its enormous speed in this state. The bullet tore through his left shoulder, causing him to grunt in pain. However, much to Sirzechs's shock, the wound closed almost instantly, with Alkaid flexing his arm before turning to his foe.
"Well done, young Devil King." Alkaid praised his opponent. "It has been ages since someone was able to inflict a wound on this body. Perhaps I should take this a bit more seriously then."
Alkaid tapped his cane once, causing its shape to change into that of an ornate gold spear that was letting out a brilliant light. Sirzechs felt his skin sizzle due to the aura coming from the weapon, letting out a surprised gasp after taking a closer look at it.
"This spear is…Brionac?" Sirzechs narrowed his eyes. "The spear of the God Lugh? You can't be the God himself, so how can you possibly have taken hold of it?"
"Well, this is and isn't Brionac at the same time." Alkaid said, letting out a low chuckle. "I'm afraid anything more than that is a trade secret for now. A good performer never tips their hand too early."
"I see." Sirzechs said. "It seems I have one more reason to eliminate you posthaste."
Multiple miniature spheres appeared around Sirzechs. At the same time, his right hand cracked as pure Destruction energy seeped out of it, wrapping itself around it. Alkaid narrowed his eyes at the sight as he brandished his spear while copious amounts of aura enveloped his body. However, just as the two were about to clash, a sudden massive outburst of black and golden aura caught their attention.
"That's…!"
"Hoh? Looks like this battle is about to get even more interesting."
"Have you figured out anything regarding the enemy's technique, Azazel!?"
"Sorry, but I'm coming up empty here for now, Michael!"
Azazel shouted as he formed a light naginata, aiming at Megrez. However, the masked individual vanished once again, with Michael appearing in his place. The Archangel brought up his blade to counter Azazel's thrust, with the two of them flying backwards in haste to evade a large number of darkness disks aimed at them.
"Come now, gentlemen." Megrez said, a hint of mirth in his voice. "I know you two are old enemies, but this is hardly the time to take your frustrations out on one another."
"Cocky bastard…" Azazel grunted as Michael flew next to him. "Even though we don't have time to waste with him…!"
"I know." Michael said with a serious expression, glancing at the Two Heavenly Dragons clashing in the distance. "All the more reason to do our best to figure out what tricks he is using and take him down."
"You two seem rattled." Megrez noted as several ravens flocked to him. "Is it perhaps because your precious children are dead set on killing each other over there? Michael is one thing, but you still care for Vali Lucifer even though he backstabbed you, Azazel? For better or for worse, I suppose some things are a constant no matter how much the age changes…"
There was a hint of melancholy in Megrez's voice as he said so.
"Let's give an omnidirectional attack a shot." Azazel said. "Synchronize your aura with mine, Michael."
"Feels just like old times." Michael smiled before turning his attention back to Megrez. "Ready when you are, Azazel."
Azazel nodded as both he and Michael joined hands together, their bodies enveloped by a dense sphere of light. The spheres joined together into one, which began expanding rapidly, resembling a miniature sun. Megrez conjured several gigantic darkness hands and aimed to squash the sphere, but it pushed against his attack, eroding it. Seeing that he was making no progress that way, Megrez turned his attention to Michael and Azazel, making a popping motion with his hands. Immediately afterwards, cracks started appearing in the sphere, leading to it exploding, though Michael and Azazel were unharmed.
"That feeling…it's the same strange technique he used to pull us to him." Michael said with a grimace as he generated gusts of holy wind to force the charging Megrez back. "Could he actually be manipulating reality to some degree?"
"Manipulating it…or perhaps forcing a perception of reality on us?" Azazel narrowed his eyes. "I feel like I'm starting to get a grasp of the enemy's abilities."
"I don't really like the look in your eyes, Azazel." Megrez said as a deformed clawed arm suddenly grew from his back. "Alkaid said the purpose of this raid was a test, but I think eliminating you at this stage will be far more beneficial to us. Therefore, I—"
Megrez's words were interrupted by an explosion of black and gold aura, which caused him to turn his attention there.
"What…is that overwhelmingly sinister aura!?" Azazel said with a grimace. "Don't tell me…!"
"He ended up using it after all…" Michael remarked with a stern expression. "However, will the result be a positive one or lead to an even greater catastrophe…?"
"Come on, come on, come on! That's not nearly enough to get my blood flowing!"
Adam laughed like a madman as he knocked Kaori aside while evading Serafall's giant ice stars and blocking Dia's light beam barrage with his oversized scythe. Several futuristic-looking guns appeared all around him, unleashing a rain of energy blasts at his opponents. However, Kaori evaded them with her superior speed, while Dia and Serafall erected a multitude of barriers to block the barrage. White aura gathered in Adam's hands next, shaping itself into numerous arrows that were aimed at his opponents. However, Kaori touched the red scarf around her neck, which expanded and formed a wall in front of the three girls. The arrows dispersed harmlessly upon striking the cloth, causing Adam to grimace.
"The Shroud of Turin, eh?" Adam said. "You privileged brats got all the good toys from the Church's old geezers. Between the shroud and miss Second Christ's passive defenses over there, no wonder my status afflictions aren't going through. Ah, what a pain! But also, very interesting indeed!"
"Your voice is grating to the extreme, terrorist." Kaori said. "My apologies, but we will be silencing you for good!"
Kaori vanished once again, attacking from multiple directions with her lightning-clad blade. At the same time, Dia conjured several tendrils of holy water around her and shot them at Adam, while Serafall aimed to freeze the terrorist's legs. Despite the combined assault from the trio, Adam didn't lose his composure one bit, grinning like a madman as he evaded or blocked the incoming attacks while also countering with swings from his scythe, unleashing waves of red and pale aura. Slamming his foot on the ground, Adam unleashed a storm of red aura that incinerated everything around him and forced the three girls to step back.
"Fun." Adam grinned as he licked his lips. "This is unexpectedly fun. I'm almost sorry that I have to kill you now."
"Levia-tan really doesn't like kids with such nasty expressions and attitude~." Serafall said as she pointed her staff at Adam. "That's why, I'll give you a big lecture how to smile from the bottom of your heart after we've beaten you~."
"Sorry, miss idol, but not all of us were born and raised in the lap of luxury." Adam sneered. "There's nothing someone like you can teach me. I, on the other hand…I will teach you fear, pain, and then death! But first, time to put on my party outfit!"
Adam struck the ground with his scythe as a storm of aura enveloped his body, solidifying into the form of a sinister-looking, full-body grey armor. Demonic-looking faces were embedded in the shoulder and knee portions of the armor, a pair of skeletal wings grew from the back, several long claws that had some sort of liquid dripping from them extended from the left gauntlet and the helmet had the shape of a skull with two horns protruding from the top.
"…Dangerous." Dia said in a low tone. "Foul."
"Indeed." Kaori frowned as she brandished Kusanagi. "Is that some sort of Sacred Gear?"
"Wouldn't you like to know." Adam let out a low chuckle. "Alas, such concerns are only fit for the living! And soon, you won't fit that criteria!"
Adam raised his aura as he prepared to charge, but at that moment, an outburst of gold and black aura several meters behind him caught his attention.
"Dia-san, that aura is…"
"…Evil Dragon." Dia responded to Kaori's words with a concerned expression. "Allegiance uncertain."
"Is this…Evil Dragon User-chan?" Serafall wondered. "What's he doing over there?"
"Aha, what's this!?" Adam laughed. "Another fun event is about to begin!? This sure is one chaotic night, am I right!? The Dragon Emperors' Juggernaut Drive on top of a never-before-seen awakening!? This, I've got to see up close!"
Adam said as he dismissed his armor and flew up, heading for the site of the upcoming clash.
"Takeshi! Are you alright!? Answer me, Takeshi!"
Rias called out in vain to the unresponsive Takeshi. After having used the key on Cataclysm Zone, he had fallen on his knees while large amounts of aura and crackling electricity surrounded him, preventing everyone from approaching him. He had been in that state for about ten seconds when suddenly—
[Force Rise! Crescent Circle Rampage!]
Following that announcement from Cataclysm Zone, Takeshi's black and gold aura exploded outwards, almost sending the members of the Gremory and Sitri Peerage flying. Numerous vein-like gold energy lines began extending from Cataclysm Zone and crawling all over his body, which started bulking up. Skin was replaced by armor while an oversized tail began growing from Takeshi's back. Then, after a final outburst of draconic aura, the transformation was complete, with Takeshi's armored form becoming visible once the dust cloud dispersed.
"What in the Lord's name…?"
That was the only thing the shocked Xenovia could say, expressing everyone's matching sentiments. Takeshi was now covered head-to-toe in a jet-black armor with a Dragon motif that had gold gems embedded in the shoulder, sides of the chest, forearm, knee and forehead area, and gold energy lines running through the forehand and foreleg area. The sides of the helmet resembled bat-like wings and two horns that extended backwards protruded from its top part, while the shoulder armor was a size bigger than the rest of the armor and had claw-like constructs protruding from it. Finally, a large segmented tail extended from the back, with a stinger mounted at its end.
All in all, the sinister-looking armor combined with the dense amount of corrupted draconic aura that was surrounding Takeshi's body had everyone on edge and uncertain on how to address or approach him.
"…Senpai…?"
Koneko was the one to break the tense silence, calling out to Takeshi in a hesitant manner. However, Takeshi seemingly paid no heed to her, his attention focused on the high-speed clash between the Heavenly Dragons above. Then, with a burst of speed, he vanished from his spot before anyone could realize what had happened. The next second, a resounding sound echoed as the rampaging Dragon Emperors were knocked out of the sky, crashing on the ground and opening two large craters.
"Did he just…sent these two crashing on the ground with a single blow?" Yuuto said with an astonished expression as Takeshi landed between the two craters. "Even though they are quite powerful themselves?"
"I couldn't follow his movements at all…" Tsubaki muttered with a wary expression. "Is that the true power hidden in Ryuugamine-kun's Sacred Gear…?"
At that moment, the Red Dragon emerged from its crater and howled as it zeroed in on Takeshi. Moving impossibly fast, it appeared in front of him and attempted to slash at him with his claws. However, Takeshi evaded the Red Dragon's furious attacks with a minimal amount of movements, its slashes missing him by a wide margin. The Red Dragon seemed to be getting frustrated at its inability to hit its opponent, aiming its front legs at its foe and unleashing a barrage of red aura bullets. Once again though, his attacks hit nothing but air as Takeshi weaved through them while walking towards the Red Dragon. Breaking one of its claws with a chop, he grabbed it and jammed it into its neck, with the Red Dragon howling in pain as it stumbled backwards.
At that time, the White Dragon struck as well, its azure flame-enveloped tail aiming at Takeshi's head. Without even turning around, Takeshi caught the incoming tail using an aura claw-like construct coming from his shoulder and crushed it, with the White Dragon letting out a pained howl. It snarled as it charged at Takeshi while the Red Dragon extended its wings and leapt, aiming to strike from above. However, a single side kick from Takeshi unleashed large amounts of black and gold aura that struck the White Dragon, sending it tumbling on the ground. The charging Red Dragon was also met with an uppercut, whose aura outburst sent it tumbling through the air and crashing into the school building behind it. Both Dragons howled in agony once again as their armors cracked from the force of the blows, with blood flowing from their wounds.
"Takeshi didn't even make contact with them…" Akeno remarked with a fearful expression. "The excess aura coming out from his blows were enough to send these two flying…"
"He's probably wary of the White Dragon Emperor's power-stealing ability." Sona said. "Since the power activates through contact, he's safe as long as he doesn't touch him directly."
"More importantly, it's like he can read their movements way before they perform them." Pandora pointed out as the two Dragons aimed their claws and aura blasts at Takeshi once again, only to fail hitting him at every turn. "How is that possible? Is that some form of foresight or future-viewing ability?"
"No, it's probably something different." Rias said as Takeshi batted aside the Red Dragon's mouth beam and evaded a stream of azure flames coming from the White Dragon. "If I'm correct and the Evil Dragon who's granting his power to Takeshi is Crom Cruach, then this is probably his ability."
"Battle intuition." Sona said. "Crom Cruach's instinct and senses were the most honed among the entirety of Dragonkind thanks to the countless battles he had fought and his talent in that area. If the stories are true, he could read not only the flow of aura in one's body, but even the nerve signals sent from one's brain to their body, allowing him to accurately predict his opponents' moves before they could even execute them. And due to his own abnormal reaction time, he could counter their attacks and exploit the ensuing openings to cinch victory."
"A truly overpowered skill for a warrior, and that's without taking his abnormally massive amounts of draconic aura into account." Xenovia said, her eyes focused on the battle between the three Dragon-wielding Sacred Gear users. "No wonder why he was so feared and why it took Deus Trinity, the Irish Pantheon, the Norse Pantheon and the Welsh Pantheon working together to take him down and seal him for good. Prior to that, he had only been killed three times, once in his youth while serving Balor, once by Deus Trinity and the Irish Pantheon during the fifth century, and once when challenging Shiva."
"Even then, the Welsh Pantheon was almost annihilated and the Irish Pantheon lost several deities over the course of the battle." Yuuto said with a concerned expression. "That kind of dreadful power is what Takeshi-kun is channeling right now. Question is…can he handle it?"
"He can." Akeno said with as confident a tone as she could manage. "He must…"
Everyone fell silent once again as they focused on the battle, with Rias, Akeno, Sona and Tsubaki also doing their best to reinforce the barrier covering them. Despite the fact that the Red and White Dragon were focusing their attacks solely on Takeshi, they were still unable to even scratch him. On the other hand, Takeshi's aura strikes were inflicting more and more damage on his opponents, with their armors cracking in numerous places and injuries pilling up. One of the Red Dragon's wings had bent in an unnatural angle and almost all its claws were broken, while the White Dragon's tail had almost been completely destroyed and its left hand's armor had been crushed. His effortless moves and lack of any sort of reaction made it seem like Takeshi was playing with his opponents.
Having lost its patience as Takeshi struck it for the umpteenth time and sent it skidding backwards, the Red Dragon howled in outrage as it began gathering its aura.
[Boost! Boost! Boost! Boost! Boost! Boost! Boost! Boost! Boost! Boost!]
The chest part of the Red Dragon's armor opened up, revealing a launcher that had massive amounts of aura gathering around its muzzle.
[Longinus Smash—]
Before the Red Dragon could launch its attack, Takeshi moved first. An aura construct in the shape of a Dragon's head that was shot from his kick bit through the White Dragon's armor and sent it flying. At the same time, he shot a highly condensed aura bullet at the charging launcher. His aim was true as his blast struck the muzzle, causing a large explosion that heavily damaged the Red Dragon's torso armor as it howled in agony. Takeshi's tail extended, with its black thunder-clad stinger striking the Red Dragon and sending him crashing on the top area of the barrier. As it dropped back to the ground, Takeshi pressed the top part of his buckle.
[Malice!]
A large wave of corrupted draconic aura burst out of his body, forcing everyone in the area to erect more barriers to withstand the wave. The Heavenly Dragons weren't so quick to react, with the aura washing over them and forcing them on their knees as they wailed. However, Takeshi wasn't done as he kept pressing the top part of his buckle.
[Atrocity!]
[Hazard!]
[Slaughter!]
With each subsequent charge, the corrupted black and gold draconic aura kept building up in Takeshi's body.
"This is bad!" Azazel cried out. "Everyone, put up your strongest barriers at once!"
Following Azazel's words, Takeshi pressed both sides of his buckle once.
[Disaster Charge! Cataclysm Outburst IV!]
An explosion of aura erupted with Takeshi at its center, ravaging the school and vaporizing whatever was left of the new school building and the buildings adjacent to it, leaving only scorched earth behind. Sirzechs, Michael, Azazel and Serafall rushed to shield the weaker members with the most powerful barriers they could conjure, while the trio of Alkaid, Megrez and Adam formed their own barriers.
The Red Dragon, who was closer to the epicenter, received the brunt of the attack, falling on the ground with numerous cracks all over its body. Then, its armor broke apart and vanished, revealing the wounded form of Leon, who was heaving as he struggled to remain conscious.
"Wohoooo, look at that!" Adam laughed. "He actually knocked the Juggernaut out of him! That's quite the impressive power! Makes me want to fight him a bit!"
"Not worth the risk." Alkaid said as he stared at Takeshi. "There is no telling how much power he can channel in this state. Best to keep observing them for now."
Glancing at Leon once, Takeshi turned his attention to the White Dragon, who had managed to somewhat mitigate the effects of the aura explosion by shielding itself with its own aura. Letting out a menacing growl, it spread its wings as an announcement echoed.
[Half Dimension!]
Takeshi's surroundings were enveloped by the halving field, with his body being constricted by it. At the same time, the White Dragon's chest and torso area opened up, revealing a launcher as well that was aimed at Takeshi.
"He is also trying to use the Longinus Smasher?" Michael grimaced. "However, the Evil Dragon User is…"
Takeshi was walking towards the White Dragon, seemingly undeterred by the warped space around him and the pressure it exerted on him. At the same time, he pressed the sides of his buckle twice.
[Disaster Charge!]
Takeshi's right gauntlet was enveloped by a raging storm of black and gold aura as he approached his foe. The White Dragon howled in outrage as the charge for its strongest attack was finished.
[Longinus Smasher!]
A mass of pure white aura flew out of the launcher, heading straight for Takeshi. However, much to everyone's shock, Takeshi dispersed the blast with a single swipe of his hand as he finally reached the White Dragon.
[Cataclysm Impact!]
Following that announcement, Takeshi conjured a thick aura claw from his right gauntlet that struck the White Dragon several times all over its body before grabbing it and tossing it at the barrier. Then, a flurry of punches surrounded by Dragon-shaped corrupted aura bombarded the White Dragon's body, shattering it in several parts. The barrier behind it also started cracking from the force of the attack, with the cracks spreading in an alarming rate.
"The barrier won't withstand this much power!" Sirzechs shouted as he turned to the troops stationed outside the barrier. "All forces outside, defensive maneuvers now!"
The Angels, Fallen Angels and Devils moved in haste to create as many defensive magic circles as they could while Takeshi kept attacking. With one final uppercut, the White Dragon was sent flying as the barrier shattered. Although the large number of defensive magic circles mitigated the ensuing shockwave somewhat, they were unable to stop it completely. As such, a large number of houses were damaged, windows shattered, trees were uprooted and vehicles were sent flying. Several fires also started in some areas while alarms began blaring and confused citizens exited their houses to figure out what had just happened.
"If it keeps going like this…!" Michael said with a stern expression as he flew towards the troops. "Everyone, follow me! We must put the residents to sleep at once, alter their memories and rescue the wounded! Hurry!"
[Yes, sir!]
All troops shouted and spread out as they rushed to perform a cover-up under Michael's guidance before the situation escalated even further. Meanwhile, Takeshi was staring at the location where the White Dragon had been sent flying. Trudging towards him from there was Vali, his Juggernaut Drive armor gone and wounds all over his body. However, there was a wide smile on his face despite his current condition.
"Are you ever going to stop letting me have so much fun, Takeshi!?" Vali laughed as the Scale Mail began reforming around his body. "Even though it's an incomplete Balance Breaker, you were still powerful enough to overcome both mine and Leon's Juggernaut Drive! Splendid! Truly splendid, my friend, my rival! But I'm far from satisfied! Show me even more of your power!"
After saying so, Vali crouched with his hands spread wide open as azure flames and aura began gathering around his right foot.
"That's…" Leon, who had forced himself up and reformed his Balance Breaker armor as well, opened his eyes wide. "Stop, Vali! Don't provoke him any further!"
Vali paid no heed to Leon's words as he kept building up his aura. In response, Takeshi pressed the sides of his buckle once while corrupted draconic aura started building up around his right leg.
[Disaster Charge!]
"You stubborn knucklehead!" Leon spat out as he began gathering holy and draconic aura around his right leg as well. "Now it's really a do-or-die situation!"
"Don't be such a buzzkill, Leon!" Vali said with a deranged smile. "You only live once, so you have to make the most out of it!"
After saying so, Vali jumped into the air, with Leon doing the same.
"Purgatory Extermination – Blaze Utopia!"
"Ascension Storm Impact!"
Both youths shouted thus as they aimed their kicks at Takeshi. However, he was unperturbed as he spoke for the first time ever since assuming his new form, his voice mixed with that of Crom Cruach's.
"[Victory…was never an option for you!]"
[Cataclysm Nova!]
Takeshi's roundhouse kick struck both of his incoming opponents, breaking through their attacks and causing a massive aura explosion that sent both Dragon Emperors flying and crashing on the ground. Their Scale Mails were shattered once again, while Vali's right leg was bent in an unnatural angle. As for Leon, even more injuries had piled up on his body as he struggled to stand using Fragarach, only to fall down once again, his trembling limbs incapable of supporting his weight.
"He won…" Akeno murmured in a daze. "Takeshi defeated both Dragon Emperors."
"Yes…but at what cost?" Yuuto said as he glanced at the ravaged landscape around them and the wrecked town in the distance. "One misstep and the destruction could have been even worse than this…"
Meanwhile, Takeshi was approaching the writhing Vali, who was doing his best to endure the pain from his injuries. Seeing that a small aura sphere had formed in Takeshi's raised finger, Vali smirked.
"You want…to finish me off?" Vali said, coughing up some blood. "Do it then. The loser…has no right to complain about their fate. I guess…this was as far as I could go…"
Takeshi aimed at the downed Vali as the sphere became larger. However, at that moment, Takeshi's left hand grabbed his right as he began struggling with himself all of a sudden while sparks flew out of Cataclysm Zone.
[What do you think you are doing, little one?] Crom Cruach's displeased voice echoed from Cataclysm Zone. [Why are you trying to stop this? A battle isn't over until your foe has been eliminated. Quit this useless resistance and let us end this.]
"I…refuse!" Takeshi shouted through gritted teeth while doing his best to restrain himself and reassert full control over his body. "I only…wanted to stop them…not kill them! As far as I'm concerned…even if it displeases you… even if I have to pay a heavy price for that…the battle is over, Crom Cruach!"
[Such foolishness.] Crom Cruach snorted. [Showing such weakness is a valid reason for me to destroy you here…but we did bring the Heavenly Dragons down to their knees. I suppose I am satisfied with that much for now. For that, and for the reckless courage you have exhibited just now in defying me, I shall let this slide and let you have it your way. Farewell, little one.]
After Crom Cruach said so, his presence receded and the armor enveloping Takeshi vanished. He fell on his knees, his body trembling as he threw up a large amount of blood, feeling like his insides were trying to crawl out of his body. His whole body burned to the point where he felt like he had been submerged in a pool of magma, while also being pulled apart from all directions at the same time. He also had trouble focusing on anything, his senses having gone haywire for some reason, and several burn-like black marks had appeared all over his body.
"Damn…Evil Dragon…" Takeshi croaked out. "Why…does it always…end up…like this…?"
"Takeshi!" Rias shouted as she and the others rushed to his side. "Can you hear me!? Are you alright!?"
"…He's clearly not." Koneko said with a concerned expression as she started channeling ki into him. "There's a lot of damage on his body…and even greater on his soul. He must have lost at least a quarter of his lifespan, maybe more."
"A quarter…" Pandora muttered. "As expected from the mightiest Evil Dragon. His power certainly didn't come cheap…"
"You stubborn idiot!" Akeno scolded Takeshi. "Why must you always risk your life like this!? However…I'm grateful you didn't break the promise at least…"
"Will he be alright?" Xenovia frowned as she checked Takeshi. "This looks serious."
"…I'll do my best to help."
Koneko said as she kept channeling ki to Takeshi. At that moment—
"Oya, oya, what's this? You look like a total mess, Vali!"
"Yes, this is surprising indeed. Who would have thought that you would be pushed to such an extent?"
Everyone turned their attention to the sky, from where the two unfamiliar voices had come from. Two silhouettes swooped down and landed next to Vali. One of them was a young man with short brown hair and eyes, who was wearing ancient Chinese armor and holding a staff in his right arm. The other was a beautiful young woman with an hourglass figure, extremely pale-white skin, silver-blond long hair, red eyes and pointed ears, who was holding a broadsword with a curved blade and wore an elegant dress that seemed to have been modified and shortened in several areas to allow for greater freedom of movement.
"…Bikou, Milena." Vali said. "Why are you two here?"
"You're so cold as always." Bikou said as he helped Vali up. "My partner's in a pinch here, so it's only natural to come and help, you know? We had to make a long journey to get here, so a little gratitude would be appreciated."
"Seriously, you should have retreated on your own the moment the Evil Dragon User overcame your Juggernaut Drive." Milena said. "That pride of yours is going to be the death of you one day, Vali. You know that, right?"
"So you say, but you would have stood your ground and fought as well in my place." Vali smirked. "Am I wrong, Milena?"
"Well, that might be true."
Milena grinned back. At that moment, Azazel, Serafall and Sirzechs landed in front of Kuoh Academy's Devils, while Kaori and Dia rushed to Leon's side. Alkaid, Megrez and Adam also landed next to Vali and the newcomers, with both sides eying each other warily.
"So, the descendant of the Victorious Fighting Buddha has also joined the Khaos Brigade?" Azazel let out a tired sigh. "Damn, what is this world coming to with all these young ones wanting to cause chaos and mischief…?"
"Victorious Fighting Buddha…?" Sona narrowed her eyes. "Then, that young man is Sun Wukong's descendant? The one from Journey to the West?"
"The very same!" Bikou grinned. "Name's Bikou! Nice to meet you, everyone!"
"Why would the descendant of such an illustrious personage join a terrorist group…?"
"I guess I inherited my ancestor's mischievous streak." Bikou responded thus to Tsubaki's question with a wink. "I live doing as I please, and what pleases me most is battle and living unbound by any rules."
"So troublesome…" Azazel grimaced before turning to Milena. "And you must be a Vampire, right?"
"Correct." Milena said as she made a curtsy. "My name is Milena Bathory. Everyone, it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance."
"Bathory…?" Sirzechs said with a frown. "You are a member of that erased Vampire noble clan? I thought the other noble houses of the Carmilla Faction had purged all members of the Bathory house after Elizabeth Bathory's transgressions."
"Unfortunately, they missed a few of us." Milena smirked. "Ah, but it's not like I joined Vali here for revenge or anything. I just thought it would be amusing to follow the White Dragon Emperor and see what sort of trouble we can get ourselves into."
"More importantly, do you all wish to continue fighting?" Sirzechs said. "If so, rest assured that we shall do our utmost to eliminate you here."
"No, I believe that's quite enough for tonight." Alkaid said. "I wouldn't be surprised if reinforcements are en route from your side, and Ophis-sama doesn't wish for an all-out war for now. That's why, we are retreating. Unless you want to try and stop us?"
"Please, please try and stop us." Adam grinned. "Anything so we can get to continue the festival!"
"I have a feeling that it would be difficult to stop you here." Sirzechs said. "Am I wrong?"
Alkaid said nothing as he swung his cane, opening a rift in space. At the same time, Bikou stabbed his staff in the ground, with black smoke coming out of it and enveloping him, Vali and Milena.
"Takeshi, Leon." Vali addressed his two friends. "Tonight's battle was truly enjoyable…though it pains me to admit that Takeshi was the winner this time. Let us all grow even stronger, further master our powers and fight once again in the future to determine who's the strongest once and for all. At that time though, the winner will be me."
After saying so, Vali and his comrades vanished in the darkness, while Alkaid, Megrez and Adam walked into the rift and disappeared as well.
"Looks like it's over." Michael, who descended from above, said as he landed next to the other leaders. "Thankfully, we were able to contain the damage and modify everyone's memories. By tomorrow, they will believe that a freak hurricane struck the town and was responsible for the damages."
"Damages…which I caused for the most part…" Takeshi said with a grim expression as he walked towards Michael with unsteady steps, Koneko and Akeno supporting him. "How many…how many people were killed…?"
"In total, we had eight hundred and seventy-six injured people, but no deaths fortunately." Michael said. "That is something to be thankful for."
"Doesn't really…make me feel any better…" Takeshi grimaced. "One wrong move, a little extra power behind my blows and I would have…"
"Yes, you could have, but you didn't, and that's all that matters in the end." Azazel said. "You don't have to blame yourself for what happened tonight. If you hadn't acted when you did, it's very likely this town and everyone in it would have been vaporized by the clash between the Heavenly Dragons in their Juggernaut Drive once they got serious. It wouldn't be the first time. If you want to hold someone accountable, I'm your guy. I should have anticipated Vali's betrayal given how adamant he was when it came to the pursuit of power."
"About that." Sirzechs said. "A serious issue could arise regarding Vali's status as the original Lucifer's descendant. I understand you kept quiet for so long because you wished to protect the boy from forces that would seek to use or eliminate him. However, once news of his parentage spread, some noble Devils from our side might accuse you of sheltering him only because you sought to use him as a political tool to incite discord among us at some point."
"Meh, let them say what they want." Azazel said with a dismissive attitude. "I'm used to being treated as a villain after all."
"You never change, brother…"
Michael said with a bitter smile. At that moment, Grayfia emerged from the forest, her maid uniform torn in several places and minor wounds all over her body.
"Ah, Grayfia-chan is back~!" Serafall greeted her fellow Devil in her usual cheerful manner. "You look like a mess though~! It's been some time since I last saw you like that~. Was the opponent that tough~?"
"He was rather formidable." Grayfia said, turning to Sirzechs. "My deepest apologies, Sirzechs-sama. I wasn't able to capture or eliminate this Vortigern fellow."
"Don't worry about it, Grayfia." Sirzechs said. "The enemies this time seem rather skilled. Unfortunately, I doubt it's the last we've seen of them."
While the leaders talked among themselves and gave orders to their subordinates, Leon approached Takeshi while being supported by Dia and Kaori.
"Are you alright, Takeshi?" Leon asked. "You look like Hell."
"Right back at you." Takeshi said, and then his expression became downcast. "…I'm sorry. I let my and Crom Cruach's instincts get the better of me and almost killed you guys."
"If we're being objective here, everything was Vali's fault." Leon said. "If he hadn't used the Juggernaut Drive and forced me to respond in kind, none of this would have happened. If anything, I'm grateful that you risked your life to step in and stop us before we caused irreversible damage."
At that moment, Dia passed a white flake-like substance to Leon. After he consumed it, the wounds on his body started closing, with the color returning to his pale face as well.
"…Better?"
"Much better." Leon grinned as he stood up straight. "Thanks a lot, Dia."
"…No problem." Dia smiled. "…Glad to help."
"What was that?" Rias asked. "Some sort of healing formula?"
"Kind of." Leon said. "It's manna, the substance given to the Israelites during Exodus by Deus Trinity. Dia can also create it because…well, because of who she is. It has rejuvenating properties similar to your Phoenix Tears. Downside is that it only heals believers, and that she can only create a small amount of it each day."
"Speaking of which, don't we have any more Phoenix Tears?" Takeshi asked. "I don't want to sound like a spoiled brat…but I could really use an almighty healing agent right about now."
"Ah, my apologies, Takeshi-sama." Grayfia, who had heard Takeshi's complaint, said as she offered him a vial. "Here you go. However, I don't know how much help it will be since your condition is rather peculiar."
Takeshi nodded as he downed the contents of the bottle in one go. The intense pain and burning sensation subsided somewhat after a couple of seconds, with Takeshi letting out a sigh of relief.
"That's a bit better." Takeshi said. "So, Serrano-san is the Subject Ten you told me about before, Leon?"
"He spoke to you about that matter?" Kaori said, glaring at Leon. "What's the meaning of this, Leon? Even if he is your friend, that isn't the sort of thing you should have carelessly revealed."
"He only told me about the existence of Subject Ten, not that Serrano-san was said subject." Takeshi said. "However, I'm surprised that you're letting her roam around like that if she's Deus Trinity's descendant. Shouldn't she be under constant guard or something?"
"…I was." Dia said. "…Everyone helped."
"What she's trying to say is that all of us fellow subjects and other figures worked together to give her a greater degree of freedom by pressuring the Church's higher-ups." Kaori explained, pointing at Leon. "This fellow here played a major part in those efforts."
"I bet he did." Takeshi chuckled, and then grimaced. "Ow, it hurts to laugh…"
Meanwhile, the leaders had finished talking among themselves and approached the group.
"Well then, if that's all for now, I must return to Heaven." Michael said. "Not only do I have to inform the rest of the Seraphs about the peace treaty, but I also need to send messengers to the other Pantheons regarding the emergence of Khaos Brigade and the identity of their leader. With any luck, the looming threat of Ophis will be enough to convince the various Chief Gods of the need to form a wider alliance."
"Would be nice if things were so simple." Azazel said. "Sadly, they rarely are. Hell, even though we've decided to make peace with each other, members from all three of our factions will be dissatisfied with this. That's especially true for your side, Michael. Many Exorcists won't be too happy to hear they'll have to work alongside their mortal enemies now. There's going to be a lot of dissent, I'm sure."
"I am aware." Michael said. "Regardless, I shall do my best to keep tensions down to a minimum. Nobody said this would be a simple undertaking after all."
"True enough." Sirzechs said. "We also need to hammer down the details of this treaty, but there is time for that later. An immediate response against the Khaos Brigade is our priority for now. Who will you be contacting first, Michael?"
"I was thinking of approaching the Norse Pantheon first." Michael said. "Odin is a difficult fellow to reason with, so I figured I should start with the most challenging one."
"Good luck handling that cranky old geezer." Azazel said. "As for me, I'll start by contacting the Youkai Factions of this country and the Shinto Gods. Sirzechs, about the matter we discussed, I trust I have your permission for it?"
"Of course." Sirzechs said with a smile. "I'll entrust everyone to you, Azazel."
"In that case, I shall take my leave here." Michael said. "Until we meet again, everyone."
"Before that, can I have a moment of your time, Michael-sama?" Takeshi asked. "I have a request for you, if it's not too much trouble. I was going to wait until the conference had concluded, but with the way things turned out…"
"A request?" Michael raised an eyebrow. "Very well. If it is within my power, I shall grant it."
"The fact that Devils receive damage when praying, that's due to Heaven's System, right?" Takeshi said. "If so, it should be possible to alter it slightly, correct?"
"Alter it, you say?" Michael raised an eyebrow. "In what way and for what reason?"
"Is it possible to allow Xenovia to pray without receiving any damage?" Takeshi asked. "From what I've seen so far, she still has a great amount of faith towards the deceased Deus Trinity, so I would appreciate it if you could allow her to express that faith. Plus, I'm afraid she'll exorcise herself one of these days if she keeps going like this…"
Everyone was surprised by Takeshi's sudden request, Xenovia most of all. Michael was also stunned for a few seconds, but then smiled.
"I see." Michael said. "It shouldn't be an issue to tweak the System a bit to exempt Xenovia from its damage-dealing effect. However, you are aware of Deus Trinity's absence, Xenovia. Even so, you still wish to pray?"
"If it's possible…then yes." Xenovia said. "Even if the Lord isn't there, I would still love to offer my gratitude to him and Michael-sama."
"Very well." Michael nodded. "I will see to it right away once I return to Heaven. If there is nothing else, I bid you all farewell. I am certain we will meet again soon though. Ah, before I forget, warrior Dia, warrior Kaori and Inquisitor Leon, you are exempt from missions for the next two weeks at least. I believe you have earned your rest."
"We are grateful for your consideration, Michael-sama."
Leon said as the three Exorcists made a small bow. Michael nodded as he spread his wings and took flight, with him and the rest of the Angels vanishing in a flash of light.
"We'll be taking our leave as well." Leon said. "Though I have a feeling our next meeting isn't far off. As for Vali…"
"I, no, we'll do something about that dumbass." Takeshi said. "As his friends, it's our duty to stop him from heading down a dark path and bring him back…even if we have to get a little rough in the process."
"My thoughts exactly." Leon grinned as he bumped his fist with Takeshi's. "If he knows what's best for him, he'll come back without much fuss…is what I would say if I didn't know any better. Even so, I'm not giving up on him no matter what."
While the two of them talked, Xenovia had approached Kaori and asked her something in a low voice.
"You want my number…?"
Kaori frowned as Xenovia nodded.
"If it's not a problem." Xenovia said. "I was intrigued by your fighting style, so I'd like to ask for some pointers. But if it's too much trouble…"
"No trouble at all." Kaori let out a small smile. "Always happy to aid a fellow believer. Now, as for my contact information…"
Kaori took out her cellphone and started fiddling with it, only for a frown to appear on her face.
"Erm, this might take some time…" Kaori said with a dismayed expression. "Unfortunately, I'm not very good with modern technology…"
"I wish I could help out here…but these complex electronic devices perplex me as well." Xenovia said with an embarrassed expression. "What a blunder…"
Dia sighed at the sight of the two confused girls, taking their cellphones and entering each other's number in their respective contracts before returning them back to them.
"…Easy."
Dia said with a smug expression, prompting Kaori to scowl at her. Meanwhile, Leon was busy creating a teleportation magic circle beneath them. Once he was done, he addressed the group.
"Everyone, this is goodbye for now." Leon said. "Take care of yourselves."
"You too." Rias smiled. "I hope we'll meet again soon."
Once the three Miracle Children were gone, Xenovia turned to Takeshi.
"Was it really alright to ask for something so mundane from Michael-sama, Takeshi?" Xenovia asked. "Especially for someone like me? Feels like a waste of a request."
"What are you saying?" Takeshi grinned. "Helping out a friend is never a waste, Xenovia. Now you can pray to your heart's content without worry."
"Thank you, Takeshi." Xenovia let out a lovely smile. "Trust me, I won't forget this kind act of yours."
Takeshi smiled back at her. Meanwhile, Azazel was addressing the Fallen Angel troops that were hovering above him.
"Everyone, I have chosen peace." Azazel declared. "The Fallen Angels won't wage war with the Angels and Devils anymore. Anyone who's dissatisfied by my decision is free to leave Grigori. However, the next time we meet, I shall eliminate you without mercy. Only those who are willing to follow should stay."
[We will live for the sake of Governor Azazel and Grigori until the day we die!]
This was the unanimous response from the Fallen Angel troops, with Azazel saying 'thank you all' in response. Takeshi wasn't sure if they remained with Grigori out of loyalty or fear, but figured that didn't matter right now. The Fallen Angels disappeared from the area via magic circle then, with the Devil troops following suit.
"Well, since Michael dealt with the town, I'll be leaving the school's clean-up to you and Serafall, Sirzechs." Azazel said. "I'm a bit tired, so I'm heading back."
Azazel started walking towards the school entrance, but stopped all of a sudden and turned to the Gremory group.
"That's right, since we'll be seeing each other a lot more from now on, I'll give you all a hand with your Sacred Gears." Azazel said. "I can't stand seeing such powerful instruments not being used to their fullest potential."
"Eh?" Rias frowned. "What are you talking about, Azazel?"
"For the Red one, it's justice, for the White one, it's power, and for the Black one, it's freedom." Azazel monologued, ignoring Rias's question. "All of them are such pure desires that it's shocking. Then again, perhaps that's why this generation is so interesting…"
After saying so, Azazel left the area while whistling.
"Tch, we ran away just as things were getting interesting. This sucks big time…"
Adam grumbled with a dissatisfied expression. Currently, he, Alkaid and Megrez were inside a lavishly decorated mansion. Adam was lying on an expensive-looking couch while Megrez was sitting on a luxurious armchair. As for Alkaid, he was standing in front of a magic circle, reviewing the battle that had just transpired.
"Where is Vortigern?" Megrez asked. "Will he not join us?"
"No, he went to submit a report to the Hero Faction regarding the effectiveness of Annihilation Maker's monsters." Alkaid said while focusing on his battle with Sirzechs. "He should be back shortly."
"Hey, old man, why didn't we just go all out and kill them all right then and there?" Adam said as he stood up. "Would have saved ourselves tons of trouble down the line most likely."
"Because I didn't wish to provoke Sirzechs Lucifer into unleashing his full strength, my boy." Alkaid said. "As I suspected, his true power is very formidable. Had he not minded his surroundings and gone all out, he would have eliminated us for sure. Not even my body would have withstood his Power of Destruction at full output, which is saying a lot. Right now, he might be one of our biggest obstacles along with Ajuka Beelzebub, Indra and the Trimurti. We need to keep a close eye on his movements in the future."
"The fact that the Red Dragon Emperor has access to and can somewhat control his Juggernaut Drive is a cause for concern as well." Megrez said. "Vali Lucifer could be a countermeasure for him, but I'm not certain if we can trust him."
"He seems like a whimsical fellow who will act as he pleases when the time comes." Adam grinned. "He's a bit similar to me after all. What about the Evil Dragon User? He showed some S-tier power there. Isn't he a major threat?"
"Not at this point, no." Alkaid said. "Chances are, he will destroy himself before long. We should focus our preparations on the actual threats to our plan. The Evil Dragon User and his friends are of no concern for now. If anything, perhaps we can use them to our advantage, have them separate the wheat from the chaff for us."
"Do these preparations of yours have anything to do with why you asked me to preserve Katerea Leviathan's soul?" Megrez asked, summoning a crystal containing a pulsating orb within. "Modifying the snake she received from Ophis was no easy feat, and I cannot for the life of me see the benefits in this. Her power, even when boosted by Ophis's snake, is no match for the powerful foes we are facing."
"It's true that she's not strong enough as she is for our plans." Alkaid chuckled as he took the crystal from Megrez. "However, there is more than one way you can utilize your pawns, my friend."
Alkaid clicked his fingers, conjuring a teleportation magic circle. One flash of light later, an ornate bed with several machines attached to its sides appeared in the middle of the room. Lying there was a young girl with pale skin and long, purple hair that seemed to be asleep. All the machines were connected to her, seemingly monitoring her vital signs.
"Ah, I see." Megrez said. "It's time for the sleeping diva to awaken then?"
"Yes, the time has come to claim one more trump card to ensure victory in the coming conflict." Alkaid said as he placed the crystal containing Katerea's soul on the girl's chest. "Now then, Katerea Leviathan, rejoice as you are given a second chance at life and vengeance through your distant relative."
The pulsating orb within the crystal sank into the girl's body. After a few seconds, a thin sheet of aura surrounded her body.
"Looks like it's a success."
Alkaid said in a satisfied manner as the girl's eyes opened wide, their color turning from orange to purple.
[You're telling me Katerea and the others are dead, and you didn't lift a finger to help them!? What's the meaning of this, Vali Lucifer!?]
Vali sighed at the projection of a furious man with long brown hair and green eyes that wore black armor with a cape. Currently, he, Bikou and Milena were resting in the middle of a forest, with Vali having received some basic first aid for his injuries before being contacted by the current leader of the Old Devil King Faction.
"If you have any complaints, you may direct them to the deceased, Shalba Beelzebub." Vali said. "They were the ones that insisted they could handle this and rejected my assistance in the first place. Trampling on their pride would be an insult to them. Moreover, don't forget that Alkaid and the others didn't help them either and also requested that I not intervene earlier."
[Don't you give me that attitude and those half-baked excuses, you half-blood brat!] Shalba snarled. [I swear, if it wasn't for that fact that your father and grandfather are a bunch of worthless absentees, I would not have tolerated your presence among our ranks, or even your continued existence for that matter!]
"Yes, yes, I'm well aware that having to consort with an 'impure' Devil like me is tearing you up inside, Shalba." Vali smirked. "Unfortunately, the Lucifer name holds a lot more weight in our circles than Beelzebub, even when carried by a mixed blood like me."
[That might not hold true for long.] Shalba said with a sinister grin. [Regardless, in light of this failure and your disappointing performance, you are on standby for now. Further orders will be—]
"This conversation is starting to get boring."
Vali said as he dismissed the magic circle, causing Bikou to cackle.
"No wonder this Shalba fellow doesn't like you." Milena remarked with a smile. "You have a knack for making enemies, Vali."
"In his case, it can't be helped." Vali said. "There was always somewhat of a rivalry between Lucifer and Beelzebub, mostly due to the latter's attempts to undermine the former and become first among the Devils. This vendetta carried over to their descendants, which include Shalba and me. Frankly, I couldn't care less, but Shalba and his sister, Lalasyu, aren't dropping this matter any time soon."
At that moment, another communication magic circle appeared on the ground, causing Vali to grimace upon seeing the familiar symbols on it.
"Uh-oh." Bikou smirked. "Looks like someone is about to get scolded big time for his naughty attitude tonight."
"…Shut up, Bikou."
Vali grumbled as he channeled his aura to the magic circle. A projection of Azazel appeared from it, staring at Vali with a stern expression on his face.
[Mind telling me what the Hell was that back there, Vali?] Azazel said, cutting straight to the point. [Juggernaut Drive of all things? Seriously? I told you to make your 'betrayal' convincing, but I sure as Hell didn't tell you to try and kill everyone around you in the process. You're damn lucky this only ended with people injured.]
"Right…" Vali muttered. "Leon and Takeshi, how are they?"
[Still alive.] Azazel said. [No thanks to you, of course. Ryuugamine Takeshi probably got the worst of it due to his Balance Breaker ravaging his body and soul, but he'll recover in time.]
"That's good to hear." Vali said, letting out a faint smile. "As you said, this was my fault, Azazel. I let my excitement get the better of me and unleashed a power I haven't mastered yet. It won't happen again, at least not until I can better control the Juggernaut Drive."
[See that it doesn't.] Azazel said. [Also, since we're in the subject of your mission, do you have any information about these three fellows that showed up after we took down Katerea and her cronies? You failed to mention they would appear as well.]
"That's because I didn't know either." Vali said. "I told you before, the Old Devil King Faction merely tasked me with implanting the formulas that would hijack the barrier's controls and let them teleport the Magicians inside. They didn't give me the full scope of their plan, probably because they didn't trust me. I received a telepathic message out of the blue from this Alkaid fellow that asked me to intervene at the moment I did. I don't know who he is exactly, but he must rank pretty high in the Khaos Brigade since he acts as an intermediary between Ophis and the other factions. From the little I've seen so far, Shalba and the others seem wary of him and defer to his judgment."
[I see.] Azazel said. [Either way, we couldn't have prepared too many countermeasures, or else they'd figure out that their plan was leaked and you would be the most likely suspect. Still, I can't say I'm comfortable with you acting as a double agent for us. It was a risky suggestion, Vali. Even Sirzechs and Michael agreed on that.]
"It was a great opportunity." Vali insisted. "Since they approached me after the Kokabiel incident, I figured this was a chance for us. Now, I can get closer to Ophis, and perhaps gain a better understanding of its motives and why it emerged now of all times. Furthermore, I can give you a heads-up the next time these terrorists make a move…though I'm not certain I can promise that. Like I said, none of the Khaos Brigade's factions seem to trust me very much."
[However, these aren't the only reasons you joined the Khaos Brigade, are they?] Azazel asked. [Don't try to hide things from me, young man. I'm the one who raised you after all.]
"Nothing gets past you, eh?" Vali smiled, and then his expression became serious. "It's true that I have another reason for joining the Khaos Brigade. The terrorists have their own information network, one that might aid me in discovering the whereabouts of my dear grandfather and father."
[Still obsessed with revenge, I see…] Azazel sighed. [I understand your hatred after everything they did to you and your mother, but I don't want you to destroy yourself in the pursuit of vengeance, Vali. Many good people have ruined their lives because of it.]
"My father aside, the death of Rizevim would be cause for the whole world to celebrate." Vali said. "You and I both know this bastard's insanity is only matched by his abnormal power. He must be eliminated as soon as possible for everyone's sake, not just for my own self-satisfaction."
[I understand that.] Azazel said. [In any case, as agreed beforehand, I will keep the details of your mission secret from everyone apart from the leaders to prevent any potential leaks. I will contact you again at a later time. Be careful and take care of yourself, Vali. You two, keep an eye on him as well if you would.]
"You got that, Governor-sama."
"That's a given."
Bikou and Milena responded. Once the communication magic circle vanished, Vali turned to his companions.
"Let's meet up with the others." Vali said. "We have much to do."
"Lead the way, boss!"
Bikou said in an excited manner as he, Milena and Vali vanished in the depths of the forest.
Two days later…
"That's why, from now on, I'll be the advisor of the Occult Research Club. You can call me Azazel-sensei or Governor. Looking forward to working with you from now on, kids!"
Azazel said with a grin as he leaned back on the President's chair inside the Occult Research Club's clubroom. Due to the surreal scene unfolding before their eyes, the members of the Occult Research Club, who had arrived only seconds ago, were left speechless at first.
"…Why are you of all people here?"
Rias said while rubbing her temples, looking like she was on the verge of having a migraine.
"It was Sirzechs's request, and of course, I saw no reason to refuse." Azazel smirked. "I'm a super-cool guy who can even score with schoolgirls after all!"
"That's forbidden!" Rias shouted. "More importantly, why would my brother request for you?"
"I'm detecting a bit of hostility here." Azazel said. "Eh, can't be helped for now, I guess. The reason Sirzechs asked for my help was in order to assist the immature Sacred Gear possessors of this Peerage with their growth. I'm an expert on this department after all."
"Are you training us because we're expected to confront this Khaos Brigade again in the future?"
"All of you are talented young people, so we'll be counting on you as a future deterrent against the terrorists." Azazel responded to Takeshi's question. "If you're asking me whether you'll be sent out in the immediate future, then the answer is no. Both sides are in their preparatory period, so it's unlikely there'll be anything more than minor skirmishes for now."
"That's a dangerous assumption to make." Xenovia said. "The enemy doesn't always move the way you expect them to. I mean, you didn't foresee Vali Lucifer's betrayal, did you, Governor?"
"Wow, way to hit where it hurts, girl." Azazel made an exaggerated gesture. "You have a point, and we'll do our best to be ready if they make their move early. Either way, we'll refrain from sending you young people out if we can avoid it."
"Question." Pandora said, raising her hand. "If Ophis, who's supposed to have infinite power, is the leader of the terrorists…what chance do we have against them? Haven't we already lost this battle from the get-go?"
"Things aren't as bleak as they seem." Azazel said. "While Ophis may be powerful, it doesn't have infinite strength. The aspect of Infinity refers more to its indeterminate lifespan and immunity to all status-changing effects. Still, it's true that the Ouroboros is extremely formidable and very likely to eliminate us all if it goes all out since it's still the mightiest existence. However, there are ways, precious few as they are, to deal with it should it come down to a fight, especially if the Pantheons agree to work together."
"What about Vali and his comrades?" Takeshi asked. "Do you have any information regarding them? Should we be expecting an attack from their side?"
"Nothing much for now." Azazel said. "All we know is that Vali has formed some sort of team, but most of its members are unknown. You may clash with them sometime in the future, but it's unlikely they'll appear here again. They don't really have a reason to attack Kuoh now that the conference is over."
"I'll be looking forward to it then." Takeshi said, bumping his fists together. "I'll drag Vali back to this side even if I have to beat him half to death in order to do so."
"I'm sure he'll be happy to hear that." Azazel grinned. "However, you'll need to hone your strength even further before you can call yourself Vali's equal. With the Juggernaut Drive at his disposal, he's much more powerful than your current Balance Breakers, and you can't depend on Crom Cruach's power again for now."
"Doesn't Cataclysm Zone have something like Juggernaut Drive?" Takeshi said. "Or some form equal to it?"
"From the data we've gathered so far, none of the embedded Sacred Gears have access to anything resembling Juggernaut Drive, and you'd better hope there's nothing like that." Azazel said with a grave expression. "Juggernaut Drive is a cursed power that feeds on the user's lifespan and drives them to rampage under the influence of the past possessors' memory fragments sealed inside the Heavenly Dragons' Sacred Gears. Vali and Leon Ainsworth can exert some sort of control over it by using their high amounts of demonic and holy power respectively as substitute for their life force, but they're the exceptions."
"A power like that combined with the corrupted draconic aura would destroy my body in no time, huh?" Takeshi let out a humorless laugh. "Not to mention, I'd probably cause even more collateral damage than I already did…"
"I-It'll be alright!" Gasper said, his fists clenched. "E-Even without something like J-Juggernaut Drive…I'm sure S-Senpai can grow stronger!"
"Thanks for the vote of confidence, Gasper-kun." Takeshi smiled. "But we'll be counting on you as well when the time comes."
"Eh, I wouldn't exactly count him as combat potential." Azazel shrugged. "As things stand, the Dhampir is full of weak points that the enemy can exploit with ease. There is an urgent need for improvement here."
"I'm sorryyyyyyyy!" Gasper wailed. "I'm sorry for being so uselesssssss! I s-swear I'll work myself to the bone, so don't abandon meeeeeeeeee!"
After saying so, Gasper rushed to his cardboard box while crying, prompting Koneko to shoot a nasty glare at Azazel.
"…No bullying Gya-kun."
"Hey, I'm just calling it as it is." Azazel made a placating gesture before turning to Yuuto. "Regarding you, Holy Demonic Sword kid, how long can you fight in Balance Breaker?"
"About six to seven hours." Yuuto said. "That depends on energy consumption during battle though."
"Not too bad for a recently acquired Balance Breaker, but still not enough." Azazel said. "At the very least, you should be able to maintain it for an entire day."
"That long?" Yuuto frowned. "Most battles don't last an entire day."
"There might be situations where you will have to fight continuously against hordes of enemies assaulting you." Azazel said. "It's not something that happens often, but it's best to be prepared for it. Moreover, there are Sacred Gears that accelerate the flow of time in a specific area. If you're caught in them, they could force your Balance Breaker to its operational limit, so extending it as much as possible is a good counter. What about you, Ryuugamine Takeshi? What's your time limit for each Balance Breaker?"
"Around ten to twelve hours on a good day for all of them." Takeshi said. "Guess I have to work on that as well."
"Indeed." Azazel said. "Keep in mind that Vali can keep his active for almost a month."
"Hoh, is that so?" Takeshi grinned. "In that case, I'll do my utmost to surpass him in that regard as well."
Azazel nodded before turning his gaze to Akeno, who scowled at him, prompting him to sigh.
"…I see you still hate us, or rather, you still hate Baraqiel." Azazel said. "However, you have accepted your birthright."
"Only because I had no other choice." Akeno said with a stern expression. "If I kept restricting myself, I would have caused trouble for President and the others. However…I have no intention of forgiving that man. It's his fault my mother died."
"Nobody regrets the events of that night more than Baraqiel, you know?" Azazel said. "Even now, he keeps agonizing over what he could have done differently, whether he should have placed even more defensive measures around your house, or whether he should have brought you two out of the country despite your mother's objections. When he thought you had died as well alongside Shuri, he fell into despair, to the point where he thought about taking his own life."
"That's nice." Akeno said with venom in her voice. "However, his regrets won't turn back time or bring my mother back."
"Well, it's not my place to say anything more here." Azazel said. "I'm not so boorish as to forcibly intrude between this father-daughter matter. However, know that Baraqiel said nothing when he found out you became a Devil."
"As if he has the right to criticize my decisions." Akeno snorted. "I don't consider such a person my father!"
"How troublesome…" Azazel sighed while rubbing his head. "In any case, the goal for all of you youngsters is to become even stronger during summer vacation. There will be specialized training for all of you in order to improve upon your strengths. Also, if I'm not mistaken, the Young Devils Gathering will take place during late July in the Underworld, right?"
"Yes." Rias nodded. "It's a tradition that the most promising young Devils of each generation present themselves during that time before they make their official debut in Rating Games. As one of those Devils, I will be participating as well along with my Peerage."
"So, I'm going to visit Hell." Xenovia said with a self-deprecating smile. "I guess it's only natural for a former believer that chose to reincarnate into a Devil. Oh, Lord, please guide this lost lamb of yours…"
Xenovia frowned after saying so.
"It doesn't hurt…" Xenovia muttered, and then smiled. "Michael-sama did see to it after all."
"Good for you, Xenovia." Takeshi gave her a thumbs-up while smiling. "Now the only thing left is doing something about those sudden negative mood swings of yours as well."
"From what I heard, there is a plan to conduct Rating Game matches between the promising youths of this generation." Azazel said. "This could be of great benefit to you guys."
"Is this really the time for Rating Games?" Pandora asked. "I mean, with the possibility of a terrorist attack looming, it seems ill-advised."
"I, in fact, would highly recommend it." Azazel said. "Rating Games enable one to amass battle experience in a relatively safe environment, and the plethora of battlefields and special rules also aid in developing strategic skills. I wonder if Sirzechs and the others had all that in mind when they created the game. I wouldn't put it past these crafty Devils…"
"A safe battlefield does sound pretty great right now…"
Takeshi muttered with a clouded expression.
"From what I understand, there will be games conducted towards the end of August, so I'll do my best to prepare you all for them." Azazel said, and then started chuckling. "There's Cataclysm Zone that has progressed further than ever, Forbidden Balor View and the irregular Holy Demonic Sword. I will drive the results of my research into them and explore their unique evolutions. Fufu, my scientist's soul is on fire!"
"S-Senpai, I'm scared!" Gasper cried out, his cardboard box having ended up behind Takeshi. "F-Feels like that Fallen Angel will dissect us aliveeeeeeeee!"
"I wouldn't put it past him." Takeshi narrowed his eyes. "Maybe it's not too late to run away…?"
"We should have some faith in his abilties…" Yuuto said with a hesitant look. "I'm sure he knows what he's doing, right…?"
"Oh, I almost forgot." Azazel said. "Sirzechs has one more order for you all. The female members of Rias Gremory's Peerage must move in to Ryuugamine Takeshi's residence as soon as possible."
Everyone was stunned for a few seconds following these unexpected words from Azazel until Takeshi broke the silence.
"…Hah?" Takeshi spoke with an incredulous expression. "What are you talking about all of a sudden, Azazel-sensei? Where did this come from?"
"Due to the possibility of you all being targeted, Sirzechs concluded that it would best to keep as many of you together in one residence and fortify said residence as much as possible." Azazel said, and then smirked. "As for sending all these beautiful ladies to your side, well, I don't need to spell it out, do I, Ryuugamine Takeshi?"
"Even so, that's—"
"Aw, don't tell me you don't want me close to you, Takeshi?" Akeno said with a faux sad expression as she scooted closer to Takeshi, caressing his face with her hand. "You're making me sad here. And here I thought we could get up to all sorts of mischief in our personal love nest, ufufu~."
"…Senpai doesn't want to spend more time with me?" Koneko looked at him with a kitten-like expression while holding his hand. "Are you tired of me already?"
"…There's no way I'm winning this argument, right?"
"It helps that you understand quickly." Rias said with a smile as she embraced Takeshi from behind. "It's going to be great, I promise. Ah, but we'll have to renovate your house if all of us are going to live there from now on."
"Renovate?" Takeshi frowned. "What the Hell are you going to do to my house? No, what the Hell are you going to do to my parents to convince them the house needs to be reconstructed from the ground up? Whatever it is, you'd better clear it with me first, or I'll get mad."
"Relax, that's what I intended to do from the start." Rias said. "We'll look over the plans and decide from there. Ideally, it should be ready at the start of summer vacation."
"Isn't this great?" Xenovia said. "Truth be told, I was getting a bit lonely in that spacious apartment since we usually slept in groups of four in the Church dormitories. Living together with everyone sounds fun."
"Yes, fun…"
Pandora muttered with a dissatisfied expression.
"What about Yuuto and Gasper-kun?" Takeshi asked. "Where will you guys be staying?"
"Gasper-kun will be staying with me." Yuuto said. "My house is big enough for the two of us, and we're rather close to your place, Takeshi-kun."
"Well, since all that is settled, time for me to get into work as well." Azazel said as he stood up. "My secret laboratory isn't going to build itself."
"Secret laboratory?" Rias narrowed her eyes. "What the blazes are you planning on doing to the school grounds, Azazel?"
"Oh, a bit of this and a bit of that." Azazel responded in a carefree manner. "What, it's not something you youngsters should be worried about."
"And yet, I'm very worried!" Rias shouted. "It feels like you're going to destroy this school once again if we let you be! After him, my servants! We can't let him do as he pleases in our base!"
"Looks like things will become even more lively around here, right, Takeshi-kun?"
"You can say that again, Yuuto."
Both youths grinned as they joined the rest of the Peerage (minus Gasper) in chasing after the laughing Azazel.
This concludes Chapter 32. First, in response to your reviews.
—To yliaster: Origin Blaze is actually inspired from Rei Ogami's ability in Code: Breaker.
The conference and this arc have come to their conclusion. Takeshi was able to defeat his rampaging friends thanks to the forceful awakening of the final Balance Breaker, though not without some cost to himself. The power he exhibited is only a part of what this Balance Breaker can do, but the rest will have to wait for its proper debut further down the line.
Regarding Vali, I decided to make his betrayal a ruse here as he joins the Khaos Brigade to act as a double agent for the Three Factions and potentially get information on his family's whereabouts. Him genuinely joining the Khaos Brigade in the LN never really made much sense to me for a couple of reasons, so I changed that. I'm also adding a few OCs to his team (starting with Milena Bathory) to replace a couple of members who won't be there and to increase its strength, which was a bit lacking in my opinion.
Well, that's all for now. The next arc will be an original one before we move to the Underworld Youth Gathering and the Rating Game with Sona. As always, please read, review, favorite, follow, but most of all, enjoy!
See you all next time!
