1864…
Stefan and Damon hid behind some bushes as they watched the town capture vampires and put them in the carriage that was going to take the vampires including Katherine, Abigail, and Demetria to the church.
"Circle that way, I'll distract them," Stefan said to Damon quietly, pushing his brother in the direction to go. "Go."
Damon quickly nodded and rushed away while Stefan went in the direction where the men were.
"Over here!" Stefan called to the men, and they immediately looked over at him. "There's another one! Quick! Help me!"
"Arm yourself!" Jonathan Gilbert ordered one of the men, who nodded and went to stand in front of the carriage, blocking it.
He gestured to the other men and they followed Stefan as he already started running. Seeing his chance, Damon suddenly appeared out of nowhere and hit the man that was blocking the carriage. He grabbed the keys from the man's pocket and unlocked the carriage just as Stefan returned.
"We don't have long!" Stefan told his brother.
Quickly, Damon pulled Abigail out of the carriage while Stefan took out Demi and Katherine as quick as he could. As Damon took care of Abigail, Stefan untied Dementia and Katherine and took off the muzzle covering their mouths.
"We're going to get you out of here," Stefan mumbled to Demi, who was still out of it and mumbling inconsistently.
He tried to hurry Damon along when suddenly there was a loud gun shot. Immediately Stefan's head snapped towards Damon only to find his older brother on the ground.
"Damon!" Stefan cried out, rushing over to his brother.
He went down to his brother's level as soon as he made it over to Damon. Stefan had to watch his older brother die right before his eyes. Suddenly, he heard the sounds of the men coming back. Quickly thinking, he grabbed a gun and went to shoot, but before he could, there was a loud bang and both of the Salvatore brothers were no more or so the people of Mystic Falls thought…
Present Day…
Charlene was down in the cellar, looking through the small window of the door. At Stefan.
It had been a couple of days since they put Stefan down here, and she had just come down to check on him. She hadn't wanted to, not after what happened. She just needed a few days to collect herself before she saw him again.
Despite what happened, Charlene felt bad that he was in here. Even though it was the only way to make sure no one got hurt again. When she came down here, Megan was still there. Damon had told her that her best friend never left Stefan's side since they put him in there. So, being the best friend, Charlene managed to convince her to go upstairs and take a nap, all it took was the blonde telling her she would watch Stefan while she rested up.
Thankfully, it was all that it took.
But Charlene wasn't alone. Damon was there with her. He didn't want her to be down there by herself with him. It was really sweet, even though with her being a vampire and she could take care herself, it still made her undead flutter at the fact that he cared.
It was mostly silent between them until Charlene spoke up, turning around to face Damon and crossing her arms with a sigh.
"I hate that Stefan's down here. I can't imagine how Megan feels about him being locked down here."
"She was the one who locked him up." Damon reminded with a smirk.
Charlene gave him a look. "So insensitive." She mumbled, rolling her eyes. Then she spoke up a little louder. "Well, don't forget who was the one who helped lock him up."
He shrugged. "I couldn't have him running around chewing on people. While the town was looking for vampires, now, could I?" She just stared at him. "What?"
"Well, this is different. If I was talking to the Damon a few months ago, he'd be more than willing to let Stefan do that."
"What can I say I've evolved." Damon joked.
Charlene shook her head, smiling to herself. Well, he wasn't wrong about that.
1864…
Stefan awoke with a start. He found himself in a shake overlooking the lake in the Quarry. Quickly Stefan unbuttoned his shirt remembering that he had gotten shot but when his shirt was fully open, he didn't see the bullet there. It was then he took notice to the ring on his finger and he lifted it up to his eyes to get a better look at it.
"Demetria had me make that for you weeks ago and Abigail did the same thing for Damon."
Stefan looked up and saw Emily with some blankets in her hands. "Where am I?" he demanded as Emily made her way to him bending down to his level, placing the blankets in front of him.
"The quarry just north of town," Emily answered, standing up. "My brother and I brought you here last night. We found you dead in the woods."
Stefan looked around for a moment and couldn't find Damon anywhere. He quickly looked back at Emily.
"Where's Damon?" Stefan questioned.
Emily nodded towards something and he quickly turned around, seeing Damon by the river. Stefan had to think for a moment and he finally realized something… With wide eyes, he sputtered,
"Am I…Am I a…?"
Emily shook her head, "No…not yet. You're in transition."
"But how? I…"
Emily knew what Stefan was trying to say. "You had Demetria's blood in your system when you died," she told him as gently as she could.
"No. I never…" Stefan trailed off confused.
Emily sighed and looked Stefan right in the eye, "Demetria's been compelling you to drink it for weeks, Stefan."
"And Damon? Did Abigail do the same thing to him?" Stefan asked.
"No compulsion was necessary. He drank from her willingly."
Damon heard someone walking over to him and he knew immediately that it was his brother. As soon as Stefan was near him, he spoke up without looking at his brother in a monotone, sad voice.
"I woke up last night," Damon whispered loud enough where Stefan could hear him. "I didn't know where I was. I went to the church. And I watched them drag her inside…then they set fire to it. And the whole church went up into flames." He finally looked at Stefan, a look of sadness on his face, "They killed her, Stefan. She's gone and so is Demi."
Stefan didn't say anything as he looked down at the ground sadly.
Present…
Megan sat on Stefan's bedroom, staring into space. She thought about Stefan and about how horrible she felt for locking him in there. What a shitty thing to do to someone you love.
Sure, it was to protect everyone from getting hurt, but still. It hurt her to do that to him.
She sighed heavily, leaning her head back on the couch as she played with the strands of her wet hair. Well, she felt a little bit better after taking a long, hot shower.
Hearing footsteps, Megan lifted her head up to find Charlene headed into the room. She gave a weak smile to her best friend.
"How you feeling?" Charlene asked concerned, settling down next to her on the bed.
"A little better after taking the shower, oh, and a nap." Megan told her softly, leaning her head back again.
Her best friend nodded in understanding as she patted her on the shoulder. "I told you it would."
Megan gave a nod of her head. "Yeah…but I still for horrible for doing that to, Stefan."
"I know, but it was the right thing to do."
"Yeah I know…" Megan sighed. "I still feel bad. I just hope he doesn't hate me now…"
"That isn't gonna happen." Charlene tried to reassure her, but it wasn't really working. "Stefan loves you. Once the blood lust leaves his system, he'll be back to the Stefan we all know and love."
Megan hoped so. There was silence, then Charlene broke it.
"I'm gonna go back home and get more clothes. Do you need me to get you anything?" She asked.
"No. I'm good…" Megan gave her a soft smile. "Thanks Char."
Charlene smiled back at her. "Of course, anything for you. I love you."
"I love you too." Her best friend gave her one last smile before heading out of the living room.
Megan was alone again with her thoughts and she tried to keep her mind from thinking about how Stefan was doing down there.
After leaving Megan, Charlene went into the living room of the boarding house where Damon was. He was examining the thing that Pearl had given him.
"You know, you staring at it like that, isn't gonna make the answer of what it is come to you." Charlene commented as she grabbed her bag from the couch.
"Haha." Damon said dryly, turning it around in his hand.
Charlene giggled. "All jokes aside, any idea what it is?" She brushed her hair out of her face.
"Nope." He shook his head. "Whatever it is, it doesn't work."
She frowned for a moment. "You would think Peal would have told you what it was when she gave it to you. She really didn't tell anything you about it?"
"Just that she thought he was stealing his vampire compass, but that was a pocket watch." He was talking about the Gilbert pocket watch, Charlene realized. "That Jonathan Gilbert was a crazy scientist." Damon looked up from the device to look at her. "Have you spoken to your uncle lately?"
Charlene made a face at the mention of him. "Nope, I've been avoiding him. I can only stand his presence for a little before I want to kill myself." Damon gave her a look and she corrected herself. "Well, I'm already dead, but still. I rather him not figure out that I'm a vampire so, no I haven't spoken to him. Why?"
"Just that, he might know something about this." Damon waved the device in her direction.
"If he did, he probably wouldn't tell you." Charlene said, "Oh, and I haven't talked to him either since I've been staying here most nights with Megan."
Damon gave her a smirk. "So, you'll be here tonight?"
"Well yeah." Charlene waggled a finger at him. "Don't be getting any ideas."
"Too late…already got 'em." His smirk widened.
Charlene rolled her eyes at him. "Of course, you do." Though, honestly, she'd be tempted to give into whatever ideas he had, but she wouldn't tell him that out loud. "I'll see you later."
Deciding that Stefan needed something to eat, Damon headed down to the basement with a bottle of blood filled with animal blood. After getting down to the basement, Damon was now standing in front of the door of the cellar. He held the bottle out towards Stefan through the bars.
"Brought you something to eat…100% Stefan diet approved," Damon joked as he looked at Stefan who was looking down at the ground. He sighed when he didn't get a response, "You know what will happen if you don't eat. You'll get all rotting and crusty."
Stefan didn't look up as he said, "I'm not hungry."
"Of course, you are," Damon said rolling his eyes. We're eternally hungry." He put the bottle out more, "Take it." His brother didn't respond, he didn't even move, and he sighed. "You need to take this blood Stefan." Still no response, so he went on, "The human blood should be gone by now. You want to explain why you're still in here, feeling sorry for yourself?" He pushed the bottle through the bar, causing it to fall to the ground, "Come on. Drink up." Stefan glanced up slightly to look at the bottle, but he just looked back down, and Damon growled under his breath frustratingly. "Why do I care?" He walked out of the basement, leaving Stefan alone to let his brother continue feeling sorry for himself.
As soon as he left the basement and was in the living room, his phone rang and he answered it, bringing the phone to his ear.
"Hello?"
"Hey, it's Alaric Saltzman."
Damon's eyebrows furrowed at the sound of the teacher's voice. "Before I hang up, how did you get this number?"
"Ah, it's a mystery. Listen, I've, uh, been doing some digging on Elena and Charlene's uncle. You interested?"
Alaric's words intrigued him. "What kind of digging?"
"I've got an old friend from Duke. Who studied criminology when we were there together. Let's just say he's become a very proficient digger."
"Well, did he find anything?"
"Well, I had him run a track on John's cell records. He was getting a call from a number…the same number Elena dialed to get Isobel. And then the number was disconnected."
"Isobel knows John. Whatever." Damon rolled his eyes. "We already knew that."
"Right. Well, after that, he started getting calls from a new number. And I had my friend run a geo track. Got the address. It's…it's an apartment in Grove Hill."
"Isobel's in Grove Hill?"
"I don't know. I thought we could check it out."
"Perfect. Give me the address." Damon heard Alaric scoff over the phone, and he rolled his eyes.
"Oh, so you can go without me?" Alaric scoffed again. "No. I don't think so."
"I'm not going with you. You tried to kill me."
"You did kill me."
Before he could say anything, there was another phone call.
"Hold on." Damon told Alaric before switching to the other call. "What?"
"Well, hello to you too." Charlene said sarcastically, making him smirk. "So, I'm just picking up some clothes and be right back over. Hey, have you checked on Megan at all? Wait, nevermind, of course you haven't. How's Stefan doing?"
"How do you know I haven't checked on her? I'm not that cruel." Damon pouted.
"Oh, don't pout." Charlene said, and he knew she was rolling her eyes at him. And how did she know he was pouting? Did she really know him that well at this point? "I know you haven't because it's you. Anyway, how's Stefan? Cause I know you probably checked on him."
"Extra broody." Damon answered. "I'll be back. I have another call."
"Who?"
"History teacher."
"Alaric? Why's he calling you?"
"Something about Isobel being in Grove Hill." Damon probably shouldn't be telling this, but it was about her birth mother. And because of what happened, he owned her one.
"You're kidding? You are going with him right?"
Damon hesitated. He wasn't going to. I mean, the History teacher did almost kill him, but Charlene did sound hopeful…
"Yeah." Damon finally said, "I'm going. Hold on." He switched the call back to Alaric, "You drive. Pick me up in an hour. Oh, and I'm bringing someone along."
