Author's Note: I'm glad you guys are enjoying the rewrite as much as I am writing it! :)

It was decided later on that Charlene and Elena would go with Alaric and Damon to Duke, and Megan knew her best friend was dreading it as she helped Charlene pack up a bag.

"Won't be able to avoid Damon this time…" the blonde grumbled, shoving a change of clothes roughly inside her suitcase. "I'll be stuck in a car with him all day."

"Maybe it won't be too bad." Megan said, only to wince at the withering look her best friend gave her in response.

"Are you sure you want to do this?" Stefan asked worriedly from his spot on Charlene's bed.

"Not really, to be honest." Charlene shrugged. "But we need to find out what's up with the Lockwoods and if being stuck in a car with Damon is the way to do it, then I guess I'll just deal with it."

"I'm gonna keep saying werewolves until someone believes me." Megan said with a grin.

Charlene smiled briefly, then sighed as she closed her bag, finished with the packing. "But at least Elena and Alaric will be there to keep me and Damon from arguing too much. So maybe it won't be too bad." She glanced over at her, and Megan beamed at her best friend.

"There you go, think about the positive." She said brightly.

"Still wish you guys could come too." Charlene sighed again, plopping herself on her bed, next to Stefan. She rested her head on his shoulder.

Megan wished they were too, but someone needed to stay with Caroline and help her, so she decided to stay with Stefan too because the blonde was going to be needing a daylight ring and she could do it, that way Bonnie wouldn't have to be asked, who hadn't spoken to Caroline since she got turned, so it was probably best too keep Caroline away from her sister.

"You know what? Maybe we should wait a couple days, huh?" Stefan suggested, looking down at the top of Charlene's head. "Wait until Caroline is a less of danger, and then Megan and I could go with you."

That was definitely to think about…but Charlene shook her head.

"No, I need to do this." She said with a frown, lifting herself from Stefan's shoulder. "I need to do this with Elena. We need to find out why Abigail, Demetria, and Katherine look like us. I'm not gonna let Damon ruin that chance for us to find out, so I'll just suck it up and deal with it."

It would be nice to know the answers to that question. Megan wanted to know why she looked like Demetria, just as much as Elena and Charlene did.

"You can do it, Char." Megan encouraged. "Not only that we're only a phone call away if you need to rant or need someone to talk you out of killing Damon." She made a joke at the end, wanting to get a laugh out of her best friend.

It worked as Charlene laughed loudly at that and she grinned at her. "Thanks. I needed that."

"I know, that's what best friends are for." Megan said as Charlene got up and gave her a hug.

"I love you."

"I love you too." Megan returned, tightening their hug. Maybe this road trip was good thing, and maybe it would start the process of Charlene forgiving Damon.

They hugged for what seemed like forever, and Megan finally broke the embrace as Jenna called up.

"Charlene! Elena! Are you guys coming?!"

Charlene sighed at the sound as she grabbed her bag and threw it over her shoulder. "Well, there's my cue."

Megan locked her arm with Charlene. "We'll go down with you." She said as they started out the door with Stefan behind them. They headed downstairs to meet up with Jenna and Alaric, who was already heading out the door.

Charlene was the first to notice the look on Jenna's face as her aunt watched Alaric walk off. "Are you okay, Jen?" she asked, concerned.

Jenna gave a weak smile. "Yeah, just men, and their baggage."

The blonde frowned, but seemed to believe her as they finally went outside where Damon was waiting, outside of Alaric's truck. Charlene avoided his gaze.

"Sorry, you and Megan can't come too, Stef." Damon mocked with a smirk.

Megan rolled her eyes. "Just keep her safe, and we shouldn't have problem, okay?"

"Don't worry, I'll take really good of her."

"Good, or I'll break your face." Megan threatened, ignoring his suggestive tone.

"Just ignore him." Charlene muttered. "That's what I'm gonna do during this entire road trip." She pulled Megan into another hug. "I'll see you later. I love you."

"I love you too." Megan said as Charlene gave Stefan a hug, which seemed to linger a bit more than normal, but she didn't think much about it as she knew her best friend was trying to make Damon jealous. That would probably bother most people; however, she wasn't most people, and she didn't have anything to worry about. Megan glanced at Damon, and it seemed to be working, even though his face remained passive. His eyes reflected something entirely different. She managed to hid a smirk.

"Okay, time to go." Damon said loudly, causing Charlene to break the hug with Stefan. He opened the door for her, and the blonde went in, nose up in the air and avoiding all eye contact with him.

Elena was finally inside the truck too before Damon closed the door. Then Alaric got in, and Megan watched as they drove off along with Stefan.

She hoped this road trip was worth it.

It was already a few hours into the trip, and Charlene wished she had taken Stefan up on his offer and to do this whole thing later, but it was too late now.

Damon wasn't bothering her too much, at least not in the speaking sense. His staring though was another thing entirely. Too bad she didn't have a pencil so she could stab him in the eye, so he would stop looking at her. That probably still wouldn't stop him.

Charlene tensed up when Damon reached back and patted her on the knee. "What?" she snapped, moving her leg away from his touch.

He ignored her snappiness and simply smiled at her. "How are you doing back there?" Charlene didn't answer him as she glared at him. "What about you Miss Elena?" Elena pursed her lips, but didn't say anything, and he groaned slightly. "You know, this whole pretending to hate me thing is getting a little silly."

"Oh, I'm definitely not pretending." Elena retorted snootily. "I do hate you."

Damon pouted. "Aw, but Charlene is, right?" He glanced over at her.

Charlene simply ignored him again.

"I don't think she's pretending." Alaric decided to comment. "You did kill her brother and slept with Abigail."

Ignoring the last part, Damon huffed a bit. "There is a huge asterisk to that statement: he came back to life."

"Only because of a ring that you probably didn't know he was wearing." Charlene said bitterly. That was what bothered her the most…well besides the part where Damon killed her brother. He might have come back to life, but Damon still killed her brother.

"Why are you so sure I didn't?" Damon inclined his head at her, looking back to meet her eyes.

"I just am. If you had known, then I would have hoped that our friendship, or whatever the hell we had, you would want to tell me the truth, instead of lying about it." Charlene said. Maybe if he would have just admitted it earlier, then maybe she would be more inclined to forgive him. That was a big maybe, but it was better than what was happening between them now.

Damon said nothing for a moment. "I'm not lying."

"Sorry. I just don't believe you."

"Charlene, I saw the ring!" Damon told her, sounding a bit exasperated now. "It's a big tacky thing. It's hard to miss." He looked over at Ric with a smirk as Alaric looked at his own ring, frowning at it.

Charlene almost found it amusing. Almost.

The rest of the drive went by smoothly. Of course, it was still spent just ignoring Damon at every second. Charlene knew just mad the entire ride really awkward, and she felt bad for putting Elena and Alaric in the position where they had to deal with it.

Finally, they made it to Duke and Charlene was the first one out of the car, stretching out her body with a groan. The blonde was never a big fan of long trips like this. It tired her out.

"You doing alright?" Elena asked, concerned as she placed her hand on Charlene's shoulder.

"As well as I can be." She muttered in reply. "Considering." She glanced at Damon, and Elena nodded in sympathy.

"Right. Well hopefully it doesn't too long to find what we need to find out." Elena said. "Then we can go home."

"I hope so." And she really did.

As they started down the road to get to inside the university, Alaric spoke to them, explaining what Isobel had been doing here, "So, Isobel was officially employed by the anthropology department given that most paranormal activity is rooted in folklore."

"Or so they thought." Charlene stated dramatically. Elena rolled her eyes at her comment, but stifled back a laugh, making the blonde grin and lock arms with her sister. "What? It's true."

"I know. I'm just happy you're making jokes." Yeah, she couldn't blame her sister there. She wasn't acting like herself in the car, but now that she was out of the car, she didn't feel as suffocated.

"Well, I do have a lot of them." Charlene said smugly, earning another eye roll.

"Are you coming or not?"

Charlene and Elena looked over at Damon, who along with Alaric were already halfway to the university doors. He looked impatient.

"Don't get your panties in a twist." Charlene scolded. "We're coming." She rolled her eyes exasperatingly and Elena giggled as they hurried after Alaric and Damon.

After catching up to them, they went inside and followed Alaric into an office where there was a woman with brunette hair and kind eyes, sitting behind a desk. Hearing them come in, the woman looked up with a smile.

"Excuse me, hi." Alaric greeted, going up to her as Charlene, Damon, and Elena stayed behind him, letting him do all the talking. "I'm Alaric Saltzman, I called earlier."

The woman smiled again and got up from her seat, going around her desk to stand in front of Alaric. "Yes, of course." She said, "I'm Vanessa Monroe, research assistant, comparative folklore." She glanced over at Charlene and Elena, getting a strange look on her face as she stared at them, only looking away when they caught her gaze.

Charlene and Elena shared looks with one another, wondering what that was all about.

"Let me just grab Isobel's keys." Vanessa said, going over to grab them from a hook nearby.

"These are my friends, Charlene, Elena, and Damon." Alaric told her. "I hope this isn't much of an imposition."

"Oh please, Isobel's office is right through here. Isobel was one of my first professors. I'm a grad student. She was brilliant and one of the reasons I went into folklore." Vanessa bit her bottom lip as she hesitated for a moment. "Uh, I have to ask – has there been any news?"

If you call the fact Isobel deciding to become her research news. Charlene thought to herself sarcastically, but didn't say it out loud.

"No, I'm afraid not." Alaric answered awkwardly.

Vanessa smiled sadly. "It's this way." She opened Isobel's office door and they followed her into the room. "I'll grab the light, feel free to look around. It's fascinating, isn't it?" She left, leaving them in the room.

Charlene glanced around at everything, unable to help herself by being awed about it. If there was anything on the Pierce sisters, it definitely would be in here.

They stood for a few minutes, and Vanessa still wasn't back. Damon frowned.

"Where'd she go?" he asked what everyone was thinking.

As soon as the question left his lips, Vanessa appeared back into the room with a crossbow and without hesitating, she shot at Elena.

Charlene was quick to jump in front of her sister, looking furious. The look didn't last long as she was shot in the back with the arrow. It missed her heart, but it still like hell.

"Charlie!" Elena exclaimed, horrified as she grunted and dropped to the ground.

Alaric quickly grabbed onto Vanessa and pushed her against the wall, restraining the frightened woman.

Even though it hurt, Charlene didn't regret jumping in front of her sister. A little bit later, she was alone with Damon so he could take the arrow out. When he went to do it though, she automatically stopped him, nervous about him actually doing it.

"Wait, I'm not ready." Charlene said with a whimper.

"I'm going to have to get it out, Charlie. It'll be okay." Damon tried to reassure her. "Just let me…" He went to take it out again, but she stopped him again.

"It's going to hurt, Damon!"

He rolled his eyes in exasperation. "Charlene. You should have thought about that before you jumped in front of Elena, which was stupid by the way."

"Hey, I wasn't going to let my sister get shot at by arrow." Charlene snapped irritated. "It's not my fault you don't understand the need to protect someone you care about." She huffed. He didn't comment and she sighed. "Okay…okay…just get it out." She braced herself.

Seeing this, Damon quickly pulled out the arrow before Charlene could change her mind again. She groaned in relief when it was gone from her body.

"Thank god." She turned around to thank him for taking it out, but the words got caught in her throat as Damon was in front of her, a little too closer for comfort.

"That's where your wrong, Charlie. I do understand the need to protect someone I care about. I would have jumped in front you if she had shot at you. Without hesitation."

Charlene couldn't help but warm up at his words. If she wasn't mad at him, she would probably kiss him right then and there, but she was.

"Um…good to know…" Charlene mumbled, looking into Damon's blue eyes.

He smiled at her, then frowned in direction of where Alaric was dealing with Vanessa. "That bitch is dead." He started to walk away from her, but Charlene quickly grabbed his arm.

"You aren't going to kill her, Damon." She scolded. "That's only to make things worse."

He smirked. "Watch me."

Charlene had no idea how he could switch from nice to mean in seconds. "Don't do it. I mean it. If you do I'll…" She said nothing for a moment, thinking about what she could do that she already wasn't. "I won't speak to you. Ever again if you kill her." She snapped, though that was the last thing she wanted to do.

He scoffed at her, and it only fueled her anger more. "What makes you think that has any power over me?"

Because you love me. Charlene wanted to say but she refrained herself.

"Alright, fine." She said instead, "If you really don't care about what will happen if you do kill her, by all means, go ahead and do it."

His eyes narrowed, and he got close to her again. "You're trying to manipulate me."

"Whatever you say, Damon. If that's what you think, then fine. Yeah, that's exactly what I'm doing." Charlene brushed by him and ignored Damon staring after her.

She went back into the office to join Vanessa, Elena, and Alaric. Her sister hurried to her side immediately.

"Char, you're okay!" she exclaimed happily.

"Yeah. I'm good." Charlene gave Elena a brief smile before turning to look at Vanessa. "Alright, so let's cut to the chase, shall we? I'm Charlene Gilbert, the vampire you just shot, and descendent of Abigail Pierce, and this is my sister Elena, Isobel's daughter and the descendent of Katherine Pierce, Abigail's sister, and this is Damon Salvatore. Now that we've all introduced ourselves, let's get to why exactly we're here." She smiled before growing serious. "We need you help, okay? And we're going to need to see all of Isobel's research, anything related to Mystic Falls. Sound good? Okay. Great, let's get started."

They got into it immediately. About thirty minutes though, Elena asked Vanessa if there was any information on Abigail, Katherine, and Demetria, and Charlene joined her at a table while Vanessa gathered everything that she could. When she came over bringing one singular box, the blonde frowned in disbelief.

"This box checks Katherine, Abigail, and Demetria's arrival to Mystic Falls in April 1864." Vanessa explained.

"Is that really all there is about them?" Charlene questioned.

"All that I'm aware of."

"Well, that's disappointing." Charlene commented in frustration. Guess they weren't going to find out about them here.

Elena was disappointed too, but she still opened up the box to look inside. Charlene spotted the vervain immediately, looking over to see if Damon was looking at them. He wasn't, busy searching in another part of the room.

"You should take this." Charlene said to Vanessa in a whisper as she gestured for Elena to grab and hand it over. The woman could use it especially with Damon threatening to kill her.

Vanessa's fingers examined the vervain in her hand as her eyebrows furrowed together. "Does vervain really work?" she whispered back, thinking Damon wouldn't hear her.

"Nope, not at all." He responded, looking over at them with a smirk.

"Can he hear us?" Vanessa asked bewithered.

"No, that would be creepy."

This time, Vanessa rolled her eyes. "Can he read minds too?"

Damon turned his body to face them, still smirking. "You know, if you want to see me naked, all you have to do is ask."

"That's the last thing any of us want." Charlene said dryly, but his smirk widened, knowing she was full of shit. She noticed the widening of it and rolled her eyes before she turned to Vanessa. "No, he can't read minds, but he can be a first rate asshole, most of the time." She hummed in thought, tapping her index finger to her chin. "Okay, now I'm just being nice. He's an asshole all of the time."

Elena giggled while Vanessa shook her head as she snuffed the vervain in her pocket. Charlene was busy looking through the rest of the box, missing the now smile on Damon's face.

While Stefan was busy teaching Caroline all about being a vampire after getting her a daylight which she cast amazingly if she had to say so herself, Megan joined everyone else at the swimming hole and was dressed in a bright pink bikini, ready to go swimming on this hot day.

She had bought this one a long time ago, but this was the first time she was wearing it, and it still fit really well on her. Megan ignored all the stares she got as she went for a dip in the water.

She couldn't help but groan at the amazingness of it as she sunk in the water, letting it envelop her head. Megan had forgotten how it felt to go swimming and she definitely needed to do it more often. She swam for awhile before climbing out.

"Shot." Megan cursed to herself when she realized she had forgotten a towel. Looking around, she spotted Matt over by his truck.

"Matty!" she shouted as she waved frantically at the blonde. Confused, he gestured her over and she did just that. "Do you have an extra towel I can borrow? I totally forgot to bring mine." She looked up at him hopefully.

Matt laughed. "Still forgetful as always, Megan."

"Shut up." She huffed. "So, do you?"

"Yeah, you can use mine. I'm not using it anyway."

"Awesome!" Megan grinned. "Thanks!" He handed it to her, and she immediately wrapped it around herself. "Why aren't you getting in? The water is amazing!" Matt held up his arm, which was still in a cast. "Oh right!" She muttered. She had forgotten that he had gotten his arm broken one of Isobel's minions.

"Yeah…" There was silence for a moment. "Have you've seen Caroline lately? Is she okay?"

Megan should have known he would ask about her, but it still caught her off guard. "Uh, um, yeah. I did. And yeah she's fine."

"Then why isn't she answering my calls?" Matt frowned. "Do you know if I did something wrong?"

"I don't know, Matt." Megan lied. "You know Caroline, she would definitely say something if you did something wrong." She joked, hoping it would make him laugh. When it didn't, she tried to reassure him, "I'm sure it's nothing Matt. She's probably still dealing with the accident. When she's ready to talk to you, she will. Try not to worry about it too much."

"Easier said that done, Meg." Matt sighed, leaning against his truck.

"Yeah, I know." She frowned, wishing there was something she could do to make him feel better. Before she could really think of one, Tyler came up to them.

"Hey Megan."

"Oh, hey, Ty." Megan said. Tyler smiled and turned to talk to Matt.

She just stayed with them because she had nothing better to do. Megan made a face though when Tyler began leering at Aimee Bradley, or her ass to be exact.

"Is it me or did Aimee Bradley's ass get hot?"

Matt laughed. "All class."

"That's gross, Ty." Megan commented, making a face.

"No need to be jealous, Bennett." Tyler smirked. "You're ass is hot too."

"Oh my god." Megan smacked Tyler in the back of head, earning an 'ow' from him. She crossed her arms, glaring at him. "I think that's my cue to leave."

Rolling her eyes and ignoring Tyler's laughter behind her, Megan took off to go find Stefan and Caroline, who she hoped were at the watering hole.

However, she did look back at her ass and stared for a moment before shrugging.

Well, Tyler wasn't wrong.

Back at Duke, Charlene looked through the assistive amount of books in Isobel's office. Her aunt kept all kinds of them, most about myths and legends and about vampires, but everywhere she looked, there was nothing about the Pierce sisters. She did spot one book that caught her eyes. It had the engraving of the last name Petrova on it, but she didn't think much of it as there was probably no information about the sisters in it.

Charlene sighed heavily, looking through the book she had in her hand as Damon came up beside her.

"Any luck?"

She shrugged, her eyes skimming through the last of the pages. "None." Sighing, she closed the book and rubbed her temples in frustration. "There's nothing written about them in any of these books and I must have looked through fifty of them." She put the book down, looking over at Damon to see him looking at her amused and with a smirk. "What? What's so funny?"

"Nothing…just that it's a bummer we're not friends anymore because I could tell you what I know." Damon said smugly.

"And your saying I'm being manipulative." Charlene retorted back, and they stared intensely at each other.

"Hey guys, look at this." Alaric's voice broke their staring contest.

Charlene gave one last look at Damon before joining Elena on the couch with Alaric. Damon wasn't too far behind. Once they got settled, Vanessa spoke up, picking up a book.

"There's no records of werewolf mythology in Mystic Falls, but here are some of the lesser-known legends." Vanessa said, "Everything from Scandinavian skin walkers to the Maréchal de Retz." She handed them the book, which had drawings inside of it. They were really detailed too. "Tonartsliitsii Metslii, which roughly translates into the 'sun and moon curse.'"

"It's Native American." Alaric pointed out as he looked down at the drawings.

"Aztec. It explains one origin of the werewolf curse traced through Virginia. The short story: 600 years ago, the Aztecs were plagued by werewolves and vampires. They terrorized the countryside, made farming and hunting impossible until an Aztec shaman cursed them, making vampires slaves to the sun and werewolves servants to the moon. As a result, vampires could only prowl at night and werewolves could only turn on a full moon. When the full moon crests in the sky, who's ever unlucky enough to fall under the werewolf curse turns into a wolf."

"Well, looks like Megan gets to say I told you so." Charlene said, getting a smirk from Elena and an eye roll from Damon.

"I'm gonna ignore that." He stated before changing the subject back to the task at hand. "Can they control the transformation?"

Vanessa gave him a look. "If it were a choice, it wouldn't be called a curse." She cleared her throat and continued, "Werewolves will attack humans, but instinct and centuries of rivalry have hardwired them to hunt their prey of choice: vampires."

"Well, if werewolves were hunting vampires, I would know about it." Damon pointed out. And he was probably right about that.

"Not if there aren't many werewolves left alive. Hundred of years ago, vampires hunted them to almost extinction."

Elena looked at Vanessa curiously. "Why would they do that?"

"To protect themselves." She answered. "Legend has it that a werewolf bite is fatal to vampires."

There were worried looks all around, and Charlene had only one thought in her head at that moment.

Well shit…

Megan had found Stefan and Caroline off by themselves as everyone started leaving the watering hole because Tyler told them too. It was nighttime anyway, so it was probably time to go anyway.

"Hey guys!" Megan greeted, coming up to the two of them. She shared a kiss with Stefan before turning to Caroline. "How did the hunting go?"

"Huh?" The blonde blinked at Megan, then realized she had said something. "Yeah…it went okay. I think I did a good job?" She looked over at Stefan for confirmation.

"Yeah, you did great for your first time."

Caroline smiled as her attention went back to Matt, who Megan noticed was by himself known, and she sighed. "He's mad at me."

"He's not mad…" Megan started but trailed off at the look on Caroline's face. "Maybe he's a little mad but he's more worried about you than anything. He asked about you earlier."

"He did?" Caroline perked up at that.

Megan smiled at her reaction and nodded. "Of course! He loves you, Care. He won't stay mad at you for too long. You should go talk to him."

Caroline wanted to if the look on her face was any hint, but she bit her lip and looked over at Stefan, waiting for him to give her the okay.

Her boyfriend gave a soft smile. "Go talk to him. We'll wait."

The blonde beamed at her. Megan smiled after her.

"Hopefully they can work it out. I mean, we did." She said, looking up at Stefan.

He returned her smile. "Yeah, we did."

Megan leaned up and kissed his cheek. Just then, her cell phone went off and it was Charlene from the ringtone that went off.

"It's Charlene." Megan informed Stefan. She answered the call and put the phone to her ear. "Charlie! How's it going over at Duke?"

"We've found a lot of information, so it's going." Charlene answered. "But nothing about Demetria, Katherine, or Abigail yet. But anyway, that's not what I was calling about. Is Stefan with you?"

"He is." Megan handed the phone to her boyfriend.

"Charlene, hi." Stefan greeted, and Megan scooted closer to him so she could hear what Charlene was saying.

"Hey, like I was telling Megan, we found some information and I wanted to call you guys and let you know what we learned. It's gonna sound crazy but bear with me. Oh, and Megan, you were right. It was werewolves."

Megan beamed. "I knew it! Be sure to tell Damon, I told him so." She said into the speaker as Stefan titled it in her direction. "So, what did you learn about them?" Charlene explained, and she couldn't help but feel extremely worried, glancing over at Stefan. "Are you sure?"

"I don't know what to think." Charlene replied. "And I really don't know if we should believe it or not, but it is a full moon and after what Stefan told us about what happened with Mason Lockwood at the carnival, I just…"

"We'll be careful." Megan reassured.

"We will." Stefan confirmed.

There was silence over the other end then, but it didn't last long. "There's one other thing…" Charlene hesitated.

Megan couldn't help the feeling of dread that came over her. "What is it?" she asked, not even sure if she really wanted to know.

"So, um, according to legend…" Charlene took a deep breath and let it out. "A werewolf bite can kill a vampire."

Megan's heart dropped and she looked over at Stefan. "That's not good!" Her eyes quickly looked around to where Matt and Caroline had been, and they weren't there. "Stefan…" After she got his attention, she pointed over at Matt's truck.

After he saw they weren't there, Stefan said into the phone, "We have to go. We'll see you when you get home."

"Okay." He turned off the phone and handed it back over to Megan. He got his own phone and called Caroline, but there was no answer.

"She must have forgot her phone…" Megan said worriedly because Caroline always answered her phone. "What if she's in the woods? And there's a full moon, and if they are werewolves, then Tyler and Mason must be in there. We got to find her before something bad happens to her!" She was about to run out towards the woods, but Stefan grabbed her by the arm, effectively stopping her.

"There's no we, you're going to stay here and I'm going to find Caroline." He told her, and Megan denied him immediately.

"No…no way! I'm not letting you go in there by yourself, I'm going with you. I'm not taking no for an answer. And I'm a witch, I can use my powers to protect myself." Stefan always seemed to forget that she wasn't a fragile little human…then again, she forgot a lot of the time too. Stefan looked like he wanted to protest more, but a sharp look from her stopped him.

"Alright fine, just stay close." Stefan told her.

She gave him a thumbs up. "You got it dude!"

"Really? A Full House reference?" Stefan asked, giving her a look but he was smiling too.

Megan huffed. "Forget it. Let's just go find Caroline." She grabbed his hand, and they ran out towards the woods. Hopefully they got to the newborn vampire before something horrible happened to her…like getting get bit by a werewolf.

After getting off the phone with Stefan and Megan, Charlene went back to searching for things about the Pierce sisters. In the process, she found three pictures of each of them.

Charlene traced the Abigail one with her fingers. It still amazed her how her doppelganger looked so much like her. It was eerie and creepy all at the same time. Looking at the picture, Charlene suddenly couldn't blame Damon for mistaking Abigail for her, but it still didn't make her any less mad at him, but she could see at least where he was coming from.

Holding onto the pictures, Charlene headed over to Vanessa. "Hey, I know there isn't information about the sisters, but do you know anything about doppelgangers?"

Vanessa thought about it for a moment. "Well, the word means a lot of different things to different cultures, but typically a doppelganger is a living, breathing double of one selves."

Charlene took in the information. "Well, what about why they look like Megan, Elena, and I? Did Isobel find anything on that?"

"No, that's all she had on Katherine and her sisters." Charlene sighed, looking down at the picture of Abigail before she looked back up at Vanessa's next words, "But I can tell you that doppelgangers usually torment the people they look like, trying to undo their lives. It's not exactly uplifting."

Charlene nodded. Well, they were doing a good job at the tormenting and undoing lives part.

"That would be great if we didn't know all of that already." Charlene sighed. "I'm just disappointed. I came here wanting information about them. I want to know why we look like them."

"Head scratcher, isn't it?" Damon said, sliding up to them. Vanessa quickly left, leaving Charlene with him.

The blonde turned to glare at him. "Look if you have something useful to say, say it. Don't be an ass about it. Just tell me what you know, instead of saying all these annoying side comments."

"Well, if I know anything, I'm not gonna tell you. Not with that attitude."

"If anyone has the attitude it's you." Charlene said angrily. "You say you want me to be your friend, but you don't treat me like one. Friends don't keep secrets from each other and they sure as hell don't manipulate each other into getting what they want. So, if you want to be my friend again and want me to forgive you, then act like one, okay? That's all I ask." She didn't let him say anything else as she stormed off.

He made her so mad sometimes!

By the end of the day, Charlene was exhausted and ready to just go home and she went back to Alaric's truck to get inside. She pulled the door, but it didn't budge. Frustrated, Charlene kicked one of the wheels angrily.

"Stupid door!" She grumbled.

"Here, let me." Damon said as he walked up to her and unlocked the door. Oh… no wonder it wouldn't open.

"Thanks…" Charlene mumbled.

He smirked. "You're welcome, and just so you know, you're not gonna be able to hate me forever."

"I think you underestimate my stubbornness." Charlene gave him a sarcastic smile, but it went away almost as quick as it came. "Look, can we just go? It's been a long day and I just want to go home."

He said nothing for a moment, pulling a book out from behind his back. "You didn't dig deep enough."

Charlene glanced at the book, and it had been the one to catch her eye earlier than day. "Petrova? I saw this on the shelf. I thought there couldn't be anything about them in it…"

"The Pierce sisters originally came from Europe. Petrova was their real names. Abigail, Demetria, and Katherine Petrova, to be exact."

"How did you find that out?"

"Back when, I saw it engraved on an old heirloom. Men snoop too, you know." Damon smirked for a moment, then smiled. "Let me know what you find, I'm very curious myself."

Charlene found herself smiling back at her, for the first time in what seemed like forever. "Thank you for showing me this, Day. I appreciate it." She used the nickname she had used on him before to show that she really was. She smiled again before she attempted to open the door again, but Damon stopped her, and she groaned. "What now?" She looked over at him and her mouth snapped shut at the look on his face.

"You have every right to hate me." Damon told her gently. "I understand, but you hated me before and we became friends." And almost more than that. "It would suck if it was gone forever. So, is it? Have I lost you forever?"

Charlene was lost for words, not knowing what to say to him. Did he? Did he lose her forever? She didn't want to think so. She wanted to say she would forgive him eventually, but she couldn't tell him that. She didn't want to lie to him.

So, she said nothing but thanked him again for the book. Then she went into the truck, sitting and slumping down in her seat as she covered her face with her hands. Why did this have to be so complicated?

To say Megan was relieved would be an understatement. They had found Caroline and she was in the middle of draining Matt dry. Stefan managed to get her stop, then it just went crazy from there.

From getting attacked from Mason Lockwood in werewolf (despite the scary situation Megan couldn't help but think about how cool he looked), to Tyler stopping him before he could bite Stefan or Caroline, it had been a little insane.

Everything was calm now for the most part, except for what Caroline had to do. She had to compel Matt to forget about what happened, so he didn't find out about her.

Megan hated to watch her do it. She couldn't imagine having to do something like that to someone you loved, despite it being the right thing to do.

"I hate Caroline has to do this." Megan voiced her thoughts out loud, leaning against Stefan. All the running around had exhausted her. "I know it's for a good reason…but it can't feel good."

Stefan nodded his agreement as Caroline finished with Matt and came over to them, looking emotionally drained.

"What are we gonna do about Tyler?" Was the first thing the blonde asked.

"I took care of it." Stefan told her. "And I will get Matt on vervain. It'll keep you from being able to compel him and also keep you from drinking his blood."

"I can't believe I hurt him." Caroline looked down at her feet and Megan slid up next to her, wrapping her arm around her shoulders. The blonde took in the comfort.

"I know…it's going to be okay, Care. I know it doesn't feel like it, but it'll get better. I've seen it with Charlene. You'll get through this. I'm gonna get you a drink. You need one after tonight." Megan hugged Caroline tightly and gave Stefan a kiss before hurrying to get the drink. When she returned, she saw her boyfriend and Caroline in a deep conversation, and she couldn't help but listen in.

in.

"I shouldn't be with him, should I?" Caroline asked quietly. "Because if there is any danger…"

"I'm the last person to make that kind of decision for you. If I had followed my own advice, I would have walked away from Megan a long time ago."

And he had almost done that, but Megan didn't want to think about that. It was in the past, and he was still with her.

"You ever think you should have?" Caroline asked, causing her to snap to attention.

"I know I should have, but I can't."

Her heart fluttered at that as she sighed dreamily, louder than intended. She saw Stefan look at her and she almost swooned again.

Megan had a big grin on her face as she mouthed the words, I love you, and he returned the sentiment.

I love you too.

Charlene sighed in relief to herself as she and Damon walked up to her front door.

Home sweet home.

Before they left, Charlene made sure to call Megan and let her know they were on their way, so her best friend was probably inside waiting for her. Elena had already gone in, and Alaric did too, so it was just her and Damon.

"Road trips don't work well for us." He commented. She gave him a confused look. "Oh right. That was me and Megan. The point still stands, I guess."

"Right…" Charlene said slowly. She was about to go in, but stopped to look at Damon again. "I don't want you getting the wrong idea…things are still the same. They can't go back to where it used to be…"

"Oh, come on! You know I chipped away a little bit off of your wall of hatred." Damon teased.

Charlene didn't admit it out loud, but he did. She shook her head as she stepped closer to Damon.

"I still want an answer to something…" Charlene started off, "When you killed Jeremy, did you really know he had his ring on?" Damon looked like he didn't want answer, so she pressed. "Please Day, I need an answer…that's not a lie. Did you know?"

Finally, he answered her… "No." He admitted. "No, I didn't. Abigail pissed me off and I snapped…I got lucky with the ring. I don't know what I would have done if he wasn't wearing. Charlie, I'm sorry."

Charlene said nothing for a moment. "Thank you for finally being honest with me…" she told him. "Now I'm gonna answer the question you asked me earlier…I don't know if you have lost me forever. I want to forgive you, Damon, and I don't want to lose our friendship, but I still can't forgive you. You broke my heart, Day. I loved you, and you slept with Abigail…seeing that picture of her at Duke made me realize that I can't blame you for not knowing she wasn't me. If I was you, I wouldn't have either. It still hurt though…you sleeping with her, but I think I can find it in myself to forgive you for it."

"So…does that mean we're friends again?"

"No…I still more time, Damon."

At this, Damon's face took on an angry look. "You used me today."

Charlene knew she did…made him think if he told her what she needed to know that it meant they would be friends again. That she would trust him again.

"I'm sorry, Day." Charlene apologized, meaning it completely. "But you had information about the sisters I needed to know. It was the only way to get you to tell me."

"And here I thought friends weren't supposed to manipulate friends." Damon scoffed, trying to hide the hurt he was feeling. The next words out of his mouth hit her like a ton of bricks. "You and Abigail have a lot more in common than just your looks."

The words did what they were meant to do…hurt her feelings, the way she hurt him.

Charlene waited until Damon was gone to break down in tears.

Unknown to her, Abigail Pierce was in the woods nearby listening to their conversation, and she relished at the mention of her name, even with the negativeness of it. She was still bitter that Damon had fallen in love with her look-alike, but it was her fault the way her and Damon ended up. If she was strong to stand up to her sisters, especially Katherine, she would have been able to spend eternity with the love of her life. But instead, he was interested in the lame version of her.

Despite how they ended things at the boarding house, Abigail wanted Damon back and she was going to do anything in her power to do so.

I hope you still like the rewrite even though I'm not getting many reviews. I'm still have fun writing this anyway.

But I'll leave you guys here and I'll see you in the next episode!
