They finally made it to Slater's apartment, and Rose knocked on the door. "Slater?" she called. She knocked again when there was no answer. "Slater, it's Rose. Open up!" She stood there and waited for a moment to hear a response and there wasn't one, she turned towards the girls. "He's not home. Sorry."
"Yeah, no, we're not giving up that easy." Megan told her, rolling her eyes. That wasn't going to fly. "We didn't come over here for nothing, Rose."
Rose sighed and pushed open the door, using her vampire strength. She moved to the side as she gestured inside for the girls enter first.
"You first." She said, and they stepped inside.
Charlene couldn't help but look around the apartment. She stayed near the door as did Megan and Elena while Rose went further inside of the apartment to look for Slater.
"Slater?" The older vampire called as she moved into the back of the apartment. There was a pause for a moment, then she said, "I don't think he's not going to be much help."
"What do you mean?" Elena asked as she joined Rose and Charlene along with Megan followed behind her. They were greeted with the sight of Slater's grey body on the ground. Elena's eyes went wide. "Oh my god."
Charlene sighed, staring down at Slater's dead body.
"So much for coming over here." Megan commented with her own sigh.
Rose went over to Slater's body and started to drag his body away. Once she gained her composure, Elena went over to Slater's computer desk. There were tons of papers surrounding it and the brunette started to look through it.
"Looks like whoever blew up that coffee shop found him and killed him for his information." Elena said, frowning.
Charlene headed over there too as she picked up some papers of her own. "Yeah, that's what it looks like to me." She agreed.
Rose rejoined them. "Yeah, probably to stop him from helping people like us. The guy was a vampire almanac. Knowing too much information just bit him in the ass." She shook her head.
"But if that was the case, wouldn't they have taken this stuff with them?" Megan asked as she spotted a picture of Slater and a girl on his desk l, who was probably his girlfriend. She went over to the picture frame to pick it up and she sighed sadly. Poor girl.
"True, but why else would they have killed him if it wasn't for information." Charlene made a good point. She glanced over at Rose as the older vampire pulled open the curtains, startling Elena and Megan. Charlene wasn't as she figured the windows were the same ones in the coffee.
"What are you doing?" Megan asked in her startlement.
"Tempered glass. UV rays can't penetrate." Rose explained as she stared out the window. "I used to just come here and watch the day."
Megan glanced down at the picture frame before she looked back up at Rose, staring at her back sympathetically. "I'm sorry that you lost Slater." She told her. Not only did she lose Trevor, but now she lost someone else she had known for a long time.
Rose said nothing for a moment. "Find anything?" she asked, going back over to them.
Elena put the papers down before she turned towards one of the computers, and attempted to log into it. "Um, it's password protected. I can't get in."
"No, this is fine. Let's just go."
Charlene, Elena, and Megan opened their mouth to protest, but couldn't get the words out as suddenly there was a noise. It sounded like someone was shaking a doorknob from inside of the apartment.
"Stay here." Rose told them as she walked past the girls and opened a set of doors nearby. She peered inside and there was a girl who had her head ducked down, hiding in a corner. "Alice?"
Hearing the familiar voice, Alice's head snapped up, and Megan recognized her as the girl from the photo.
"Rose!" Alice cried out her name, crying heavily as she threw herself at Rose and embraced her tightly. "He's dead!" She sobbed.
If she felt bad for the girl, Megan definitely felt even worse for her. She couldn't imagine losing Stefan in that way. Just the thought of it made her shiver and put her arms around herself.
"I'm gonna go make us some tea." Megan announced softly after she shook it off.
"We'll help." Charlene said as she and Elena looked at Alice sympathetically. With that, they followed Megan into the kitchen.
"That's just awful." Megan sighed as she went to grab the stuff she needed. Luckily, most of it was already out so she didn't have to bother looking for it all. "I can't imagine losing Stefan like that." She voiced her earlier thoughts out loud.
Charlene nodded in agreement. "Same with Damon." She said as she gave a shudder at the thought. She shared a look with Megan, hoping they would never have to know the feeling.
Megan poured into the cups she had pulled out from one of the cabinets as Rose joined them after comforting Alice. "How is she doing?" she asked, turning towards Rose. Charlene and Elena looked up, wanting to know the answer too.
"Overreacting. Big time." Rose answered. They frowned at her response. "She found him a few minutes before we did."
"That's not very nice to say." Megan told her. "I mean, she just found her boyfriend dead on the ground. You could try and be a little more sympathetic."
"Those tears aren't for her. She didn't care about Slater." At her curious look, Rose went on to explain, "She was only dating him long enough to see if he'd turn her."
Megan's mouth made an 'o' shape. "Oh." She looked over at Alice. That might be the case but still seeing a dead body must have been at least a little traumatizing.
That in mind, Megan grabbed the tea cup and headed over to Alice, holding it out towards her with a soft smile. "Here."
Alice was staring at her weirdly – for whatever reason – but she still took the cup from her. "Thank you." She continued to stare at her as if she was trying to figure something out. "You look familiar. Did you know Slater?"
"No I didn't." Megan answered as she sat down next to Alice. "I knew of him though and I know he has detailed records about vampires and stuff and I, well me and my friends…" She nodded towards Charlene and Elena as they joined them. "Were hoping that the information could lead us to Klaus."
Alice glanced at Charlene and Elena, looking at them the same way she had been at Megan. Then she shook her head as she turned back towards Megan.
"Doubtful." Alice said, "Klaus doesn't want to be pointed at."
"Do you know Slater's computer password?" Elena asked, stepping forward. Megan shook her head at her cousin's question. Way to be tactful Elena.
Alice didn't appreciate the question either if the look of annoyance was any hint. "Are you seriously asking me that right now?" she asked incredulously. "I just saw my with a stake in his heart."
"I understand that. Do you know his password?"
Alice scoffed. "Who do you think you are?" She looked away from Elena and took a sip of her tea. This wasn't getting them anywhere.
Megan leaned back in her seat with a sigh. She glanced over at Rose and was struck with an idea. It was probably one of the worst ones she ever came up with, but she knew it would work. Megan turned her attention back to Alice and touched her shoulder, making the girl look at her.
"What if I told you that I could convince Rose to turn you into a vampire?" She didn't have to look to know Rose had heard her and was looking at her, probably with a look on distain on her face. "Would you help us then?" She questioned, and Alice nodded slowly.
A few minutes later, Alice had managed to unlock Slater's computer, but all of them files were deleted. Rose, Elena, Charlene, and Megan stood behind her, watching. It was disappointing to see everything deleted on the computer.
"Someone's been here." Alice said, stating what they already knew. "The hard drive's wiped cleaned."
"Yeah, probably from whoever killed him." Rose commented.
Elena turned around, running a hand down her face. Charlene and Megan placed hands on her shoulders sympathetically.
"Lucky for you, Slater was paranoid." Alice shook her head. "Everything's backed up on a remote server."
Rose turned towards the girls. "You know that she's not going anywhere near by blood, right?" she said to Megan.
"Oh I know, but I never said I was actually going through with it." Megan smirked as she gave Rose a wink before she went over to Alice. Rose shared a look with Charlene and Elena, impressed by Megan's deception.
Megan leaned down next to Alice, staring at the computer screen.
"Kristen Stewart." Alice rolled her eyes. "God, was he obvious."
Megan's eyes went wide at all the emails Slater had in his inbox. "Wow, so those are all leads to vampires."
Alice nodded as she continued to scroll through the files. "Slater was obsessed." She smiled, "Almost as much as me."
"What about that one?" Rose asked, pointing at the screen. "Cody Webber. They exchanged dozens of emails about Elijah."
"I could call him." Alice looked up at Megan, who straightened up and crossed her arms.
"Yeah, do that." Megan agreed as she handed Alice the phone. Alice started typing in the number as she said, "Leave him a message and let him know that the doppelgangers are alive and ready to surrender themselves."
"What?!" Rose exclaimed shocked, and her head snapped towards Charlene and Elena to see if they were too. Seeing that they weren't, she realized that was the plan all along.
"Oh my god." Alice looked at them in excitement, "I knew I recognized you three!"
"Just get him the message, please." Megan told her quietly as she walked away with Charlene and Elena following behind her. Rose was quick to follow.
"What are you doing?" she demanded.
"We're getting Klaus' attention."
Rose shook her head. "If Klaus knows you're alive, he'll find Elena and kill her."
"We know that." Megan said, turning to Rose. "And I know Charlene and I can't be the doppelganger sacrifice but I'm a witch and Charlene's a vampire. We can be used for that."
Rose looked at her in disbelief, then glanced at Charlene. "And you agreed?"
"Of course I did." Charlene said. "If this is the only way to keep our friends safe, then it's worth it."
"So this whole charade is some suicide mission so that you guys could sacrifice yourselves and save everyone else…"
They didn't have to time to say anything else as Alice came into the room, and she was smiling. "Cody is on his way, and he really wants to meet you guys."
Rose shut her eyes and sighed.
"What's wrong?" Charlene asked Elena as she joined her sister over by the window, seeing the freaked out look on her face.
"Nothing, I could have sworn I saw…" Elena looked over at Charlene. "Elijah."
Charlene frowned. "You know that's not possible, right? Elijah's dead."
Her sister nodded. "I know…I guess I was just imagining it." She shook her head. "I'm gonna go get some water. You want any?"
"Sure." Elena nodded and left, leaving Charlene alone but the blonde wasn't alone for long as Megan came up to her.
"Well, today was a success." She said, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Yeah…" Charlene glanced out the window. "Damon and Stefan are going to be so mad if they find out what we were doing."
Megan said nothing for a moment. "I know, but this is only way to keep everyone else safe."
Charlene sighed. "I wish it didn't have to be this way."
"Me either …" Megan sighed too. "But I wouldn't worry…Rose said she wouldn't tell anyone especially Damon and Stefan. Surprisingly, she understands where we're coming from."
"Good point."
Elena returned, and handed Charlene her own glass of water. "Here you go."
The blonde took it from her sister. "Thank you." She gave Elena smile a smile before she headed into the main room, taking a sip of her water.
She froze immediately, feeling a presence behind her. She whirled around and jumped at the sight of Damon in front of her. He looked pissed.
"Hi Day…" Charlene started nervously, thinking the nickname would make the look on his face disappear. It didn't it and she licked her lips before flashing a nervous smile. "How's it going?"
Damon looked at her in disbelief. "Seriously? 'How's it going?'"
"I…"
It was then Megan and Elena came into the room, both of their eyes going wide at the sight of Damon. "What are you doing here?" they both asked at the same time.
Rose entered, and Charlene glared at her instantly. She should have known Rose would rat them out.
"You seriously tattled on us?" It was Megan's turn to glare at Rose. "What happened to understanding why we were doing this?"
"She lied." Damon said shortly.
Megan looked at him with slumped shoulders as Alice came into the room, looking starstruck at the sight of Damon.
"Oh my god!" She gasped. "Damon Salvatore!"
"Get her out of here." Damon told Rose, ignoring the girl.
Rose didn't have to be told twice as she took Alice out of the room. Charlene gave her one last glare as she and Alice life. The blonde turned back to Damon, and he grabbed onto Charlene's arm rather roughly.
"Come on, we're leaving."
Charlene immediately tugged her arm away and stepped back from him. "We aren't going anywhere."
"I said we're leaving."
"And I said we aren't!" Charlene argued. In the back of her mind, she realized this was officially their first fight as a couple. "I'm not going with you, Day. I'm sorry but I'm not."
"Why are you even doing this?" Damon demanded. "You don't even have to be used for the sacrifice!"
"I know, but I am a vampire! I can be used as the vampire for the sacrifice, so Caroline doesn't have to! I'm not going to let one of my best friends die for some stupid sacrifice!"
"But you're more than willing to be used!"
"Better me than Caroline!" Charlene glared at him, and Damon glared right back.
"Let's just try to calm down." Megan tried to say but the fighting couple ignored her.
"This is ridiculous!" Damon growled. "You don't get to make this decision!"
"We NEVER get to make decisions anymore. You and Stefan do that for us. For once, I want to be able to make one without you getting pissed off about."
"Who's going to save your life while you're out making decisions?" He snapped.
Charlene took a deep breath to try and calm herself down. When she managed to center herself enough, she stepped towards Damon and grabbed his hands.
"Please, you have to try and understand where I'm coming from. Where all of us are coming from." Charlene tried to plead with him. She didn't like them fighting. "We don't want to be saved, and our friends are not going to die for us. We love them too much for that to happen. I love you, Damon, but I'm not going anywhere." She tried to turn away but of course, he wasn't going to let that slide.
Damon grabbed onto her arm again and turned her around to face him. "Get your ass out the door before I throw you over my shoulder and carry you out myself." His grip on her arm tightened, and Charlene struggled, gaping at her boyfriend. She forgot for a moment that she was a vampire too.
When she finally did, Charlene pulled her arm of his grip and tried to punch him in the face. He was quicker than her, grabbing her fist as he squeezed hard. She gasped in response as he leaned in towards her with a dark look on his face.
"Don't ever do that again." Damon hissed at her, and Charlene briefly thought about how hot he looked when he was angry. She said nothing as he finally released her and left the room, probably to try and calm himself down.
Charlene sighed as she watched him leave. Once he disappeared, she glanced over at Elena and Megan.
Damon finally returned eventually. He didn't look as mad anymore, but he still was as he didn't spare Charlene a glance as he entered the living area.
Charlene couldn't help but sigh at this.
"Time to go." Damon announced, "Alice is soundly sleeping and won't remember a moment of this horribly stupid day." Charlene would have said they still hadn't changed their mind and wouldn't be leaving, but she honestly didn't want to make Damon even more mad than he already. So, she kept silent.
Suddenly, the front doors burst open, and three men walked into the apartment. Damon's head snapped towards them immediately as Charlene, Elena, and Megan stood up from their seats.
"We're here for the doppelgangers." The man in the front spoke up, they assumed this was Cody Webber.
Charlene was the first one to step forward. "Thank you for coming on such short notice." Before she could head their way, Damon grasped her arm immediately, pushing her behind him slightly.
"I will break your arm." Damon threatened quietly, and she sent him a glare. He ignored it and looked over at Cody and his three men. "There's nothing for you here."
The man in the back suddenly dropped to the floor, and Elijah was revealed to be behind the other two men. They glanced back at him as the older vampire vamp-sped towards them, looking from one to the other.
Charlene gaped at him while Megan and Elena gasped at the sight of him. Rose didn't hesitate to take off. Damon blinked at Elijah.
"I killed you." He said, surprised. "You were dead."
Elijah smirked. "For centuries now." He looked over at Cody. "Who are you?"
Cody narrowed his eyes. "Who are you?"
"I'm Elijah."
Now, Cody's eyes turned wide. "We were going to bring them to you." He said quickly. "For Klaus. They're the doppelgangers. I don't how they exist, but they do. Klaus will want to see them."
"Does anyone else know you're here?" Elijah questioned.
"No."
"Well, then, you have been incredibly helpful." The next thing he did surprised everyone in the room.
He thrust his hands into the two vampire's chests, and they grunted as Elijah roughly pulled their hearts out with ease. The vampires dropped to the floor, dead, and his now bloody hands dropped their hearts on the ground. Damon went in defensive mode and prepared himself to fight Elijah, but the older vampire shocked them, by turning around and vamp-speeding out of the apartment.
Elena looked like she was about to throw up, and Charlene quickly went over to her sister, putting her arm around her. Megan glanced down at the dead vampires on the ground as Damon shared a look with Charlene, both with shocked looks on their faces.
Returning to the Gilbert house, Elena and Megan headed on inside while Charlene stayed outside with Damon. They hadn't said anything to each other on the ride home and they weren't saying anything at the moment either.
Finally, Charlene spoke up. "Thanks for taking me and the girls home." She told her boyfriend. "I appreciate it."
"Well, your guys' ride left you. I didn't want to leave you stranded." Damon said, and Charlene guessed he probably wished he could have, considering what they did today.
"Still, thanks." Charlene said, and she met his gaze. "But Rose didn't mean to leave like that. She was just scared." She couldn't blame her at all.
Damon rolled his eyes though. "Yes she did." He said, "She's been running for 500 years."
"That's crazy that Elijah is still alive." Charlene shook her head. "I wonder if that has anything do with him being an Original…also why do you think Elijah just let us go? I would have thought he wouldn't let us out of his sight once he saw us again."
"If I had a dollar for every time some evil vampire surprises me." Damon joked, and Charlene couldn't help the tiny laugh that escaped her.
"True." Charlene smiled as she turned towards the front door. She would have tried to open it if Damon hadn't grabbed her arm. She couldn't feel annoyed as he did this. This was the third time today he grasped her arm like this. She managed to pull her arm out of his grip and turned around to face him like he wanted her to. "What Day? I really don't want to fight anymore."
"What you and your friends did today was incredibly stupid." He told her.
"I think the only thing that's stupid is that you don't understand why we would want to protect you guys from getting killed." Charlene argued. "We don't complain when you and Stefan try to do the same thing."
Before Damon could say anything, Megan burst through the doors and started running off.
"Megan!" Charlene called out but she was halfway gone. Jeremy appeared at the door, and she immediately turned to face her brother. "What the hell happened?"
After he explained, her and Damon took off.
Megan bolted down the stairs of the church with tears already starting to fall down her face. She rushed towards the cave but didn't step inside, frantically peering inside and looking around for Stefan. He was nowhere in sight.
"Stefan!" Megan cried out. "Stefan, please! Answer me!" When there was still no response, she tried to enter the cave this time, but she didn't as Damon had come up from behind her, grabbed her, and pinned her against the wall.
"Don't you dare." He warned.
Charlene was there too, standing behind Damon, and she looked at her best friend sadly. "Megan…"
Megan ignored her as she struggled against Damon's body. "Let me go, Damon!" she cried. "Stefan's in there!" She sobbed, fresh tears streaming down her face. "How could you let this happen Damon?! What the hell is wrong with you?!"
"What are you talking about?! I was too busy saving you from you and your friends crazy kamikaze mission!"
"I don't care!" Megan yelled in his face. "I told both of you to leave the moonstone alone and you guys didn't listen and now look what happened!"
"It was the right call!"
"The right call for who?! This wasn't the right call at all!" Megan struggled against Damon again. "Let me go! Let me go! LET ME GO!" She wailed as she started to punch Damon in the chest repeatedly while she continued to cry. Eventually she tired herself out and looked up at Damon with tears in her eyes. "Please…just let me go see him…"
Damon said nothing for a moment. "Are you done?" Megan sniffled as she breathed heavily. Seeing that she was, he finally released her and stepped back from her. Megan tried again to step towards the cave, but he stopped her again, putting his hand up. "Don't."
In response, Megan angrily snarled at him, and she stomped away, storming past Charlene. The blonde took one last look at Damon before she raced after her best friend.
After calming and getting Megan to go to sleep, Charlene headed towards the boarding house. She had already gotten used to staying in her boyfriend's bed that she didn't want to sleep on her own. It was surprising, considering they hadn't been together for long. Charlene just hoped Damon would let stay the night, considering he was probably still mad at her for what happened today.
His bedroom door was already open, and she found him laying in bed, reading a book. Charlene knew he knew she was there, but he didn't say a word to her, so she stepped inside of the room. Her eyes found themselves glancing at the end of his bed. A smile appeared as she saw sleep clothes already set up for her there.
She striped out of her clothes to change into them before she climbed into bed with Damon. He glanced over at her before he looked back at his book. She let him continue reading as she sunk into the covers, turning around so her back was facing Damon. Charlene was nearly asleep when she heard him put down his book and turn off his light, leaving them in darkness. She smiled to herself, feeling Damon settle himself under the covers as well before he slipped his arms around her and pulled her close to him.
He buried his face in her hair and breathed in. "I'm sorry…" he whispered into her hair.
Charlene accepted his apology by turning around in his arms and giving him a soft kiss on the lips. "I know…"
She knew he was scared to lose her and as much as she understood, she also knew she was still going to give herself up just like Megan and Elena were going to. For now, Charlene was going to enjoy what time she had with Damon and was going to treasure every moment with him while she could. Charlene sighed, pulling away from Damon before she rested her head on his chest, snuggling into him.
"I love you." She told him quietly, putting her arms around him.
"I love you too."
