The next morning, Megan went over to the boarding house to go and see Stefan. She ended up not spending the night with him last night, so she could catch up with Bonnie, who let her know she and her witch friend Luka had broken the spell over the moonstone. She was happy to hear that but deep down, she felt like it had been too easy, but she didn't say anything about it, seeing how excited Bonnie was. Hopefully her feeling was wrong.
Megan entered Stefan's bedroom and looked around for him. "Stefan? Are you in here?" She stepped further inside, then stopped, a smile coming upon her face. "You know, it's kind of creepy sneaking up behind me without saying anything." The chuckle from behind her made her smile turn into a grin as she turned around to face Stefan.
"Sorry." He apologized.
"Forget about it." Megan brushed it off, still grinning at him. She moved in and brought him into a tight embrace before she kissed. She grinned into the kiss as he returned it.
"Good morning." He murmured against her lips.
"Morning…I've missed you last night…"
"Mm…I missed you too." Stefan deepened the kiss as Megan put her hands on his bare chest, letting her fingers explore it for a bit. The kiss lasted for a little bit longer before he pulled away, pressing his forehead against hers.
Megan sighed in contentment, closing her eyes for a moment before she opened them back up again to stare into Stefan's. "I don't want to be separated from you ever again…" she whispered to him. "I'll kill you first before it can happen again."
"Noted." Stefan chuckled, giving her a smile. "But…"
Before he could finish what he was trying to say, Megan interrupted by kissing him again. "No buts…there's no need to ruin the moment." She wanted to enjoy just being with Stefan and not think about anything else." He let the kiss last for a little bit, but he pulled and the look on his face mad her sigh as she learned back to look at him. "You're gonna ruin it, anyway, aren't you?"
"I'm totally ruining the moment." Megan sighed again and stepped back from him as he looked down at her guiltily. "I'm sorry, but I can't just pretend like everything is okay."
"Everything is okay though. I mean, the sisters are still in the tomb…"
"I know, but we still have this pressing little matter of Elena being Klaus' human sacrifice."
Megan said nothing for a moment as she went over to one of Stefan's drawers and searched through it, pulling out a small vial of vervain. "And I haven't forgotten about that, but I made a deal with Elijah. He promised he would keep everyone I love safe as long as Elena, Charlene, and I stay put and as long as we follow his rules. That has to count for something, right?"
"Right. As long as you follow his rules." Stefan pointed out.
Megan sighed as she put the vervain in a nearby glass. "Also, I think it's a bad idea to bring Isobel into this whole thing. Especially after what happened the last time she was here."
"Demetria said Isobel could have some answers and I just have a couple of questions. That's all."
She poured some water into the glass with the vervain, mixing it up together, before she took a drink. "It's still a bad idea. I trust my deal with Elijah much more than I trust my so called aunt."
"Right, you made a deal with him. I didn't make one. You should keep your deal."
Arguing about this was getting them nowhere, so Megan changed the subject, holding the glass towards as she stood in front of him again. "Here, I made sure to make it light." He reached for it, but she pulled it back for a moment, giving him a concerned look. "You know you don't have to do this, right? I know the sisters grew a tolerance for it but it's okay if you don't."
"I know. I want to." Stefan said, taking the glass from her. "Bottoms up." He took the drink in one go and immediately started coughing. He ended up down on the floor, causing Megan to go with him, putting one of her hands on his shoulder and the other on his back rubbing it back and forth as she watched him with concerned. He finally recovered and she managed to help him up, keeping her hands on him just in case.
"Are you okay?" Megan asked in concerned as she continued to use one of her hands to rub his back.
Stefan gave her a reassuring smile. "Yeah."
Seeing he was telling the truth, Megan took her hands off and she stepped back, crossing her arms. "How is it even possible that Elijah can compel another vampire anyway?"
"He's an original." Stefan made a face. "I don't really know what that means. I don't think anybody knows what that means. Well, except maybe Isobel." Megan couldn't help the look she gave him at the mention of her aunt. "Maybe we should ask her."
Megan opened her mouth to protest, but he kissed her, cutting it off. He pulled away after a moment and left the room. She couldn't help but pout after him.
Charlene went over to the boarding house that morning as well, wanting to check on Rose. Hopefully maybe the werewolf bite was gone by now as it had been healing the last time she had seen the older vampire. Charlene went into the library where Damon and Rose were at, and her boyfriend had one part of Rose's robe open, revealing the bite mark. It looked worse than ever and had spread further down Rose's back.
It was pretty shocking to see, but Charlene couldn't tell Rose what she really thought, so when Damon asked she had to lie about it.
"It looks better than it did yesterday." Charlene told her with a smile – hopefully it didn't look fake, seeing the expectant look on Rose's face.
The smile Rose gave in response was definitely fake, and Charlene felt awful her, and guilty too. If Rose hadn't pushed her out of the way, then the older vampire wouldn't have gotten bitten.
"Where's Stefan?" Damon asked but he wasn't ask the blonde.
Charlene looked back to see Megan standing behind her, staring open mouthed at the bite mark on Rose.
At the question though, Megan shook out of it as she went to stand next to Charlene. "He took off already." She answered. "Do you think you can try and talk Stefan out of trying to get in contact with Isobel? I think it's a bad idea, not just because of what happened the last time she was here, but I think it'll give Elijah the wrong idea."
"No can do. I'm with Stefan on this one but if you and Charlene could play nurse for a little while…"
"It's not necessary." Rose tried to tell him.
Damon put a hand on the uninjured shoulder, cutting off her protest. "It is necessary. Both Charlene and Megan are do-gooders. It's in their nature, they just can't resist." He took off.
"I'll be right back." Charlene told her best friend before taking off after her boyfriend, leaving Megan alone with Rose. "Hey." She grabbed Damon's shoulder, stopping him, and he turned around to look at her. "Are you okay?"
"I'm walking on sunshine." Damon answered sarcastically. The way he normally did when he wanted to hide his true feelings.
Charlene didn't press him for the truth, just yet. He would tell her when he was okay. She dropped her hand off his shoulder and frowned sadly.
"She's going to die, isn't she?"
"Probably. The wolf bite caused some kind of infection and it's getting worse."
"I'm sorry, Day, I know you care about her." Charlene wanted to hug him, to show that she cared, but she knew he would just push her away.
Damon ignored the last part. "Death happens." He said bluntly. "We come; we go. Sooner she dies the better. It's gloomy as hell in here."
He took off before she could say anything else to him. Charlene sighed as she stared at the spot where her boyfriend had been at. He was pushing her away and she knew it.
"Do you think he'll be alright?" She heard Megan's voice from behind her and she turned around to face her best friend.
"I don't know." Charlene sighed again. "I do know that he's hurting about Rose, even though he's trying to deny it. He cares about her, and he's pushing me away."
"Guess that means you'll just have to try and not let him." Megan said quietly.
"I guess so." Hopefully she was able to… Charlene fully turned around to face Megan. "Come on, let's go check on Rose." Megan nodded and they both headed back into the library.
When they returned, it looked like the older vampire was about to fall over, and her face was caked with sweat. Together, Charlene and Megan helped her upstairs, into Damon's bedroom.
"Come on." Charlene told Rose quietly as she helped her into Damon's bed while Megan looked around the area as she had never been in Damon's room before this. "You should get some rest." She helped Rose pull the covers down.
Rose coughed as she said, "I hate this. I'm a vampire, I haven't had a cold in centuries."
"I guess there's a first time for everything." Charlene commented, joking a bit to try and keep Rose distracted from the pain. It managed to get a small smile out of Rose.
"I guess so…" Rose got into the bed, and Charlene tucked her in before brushing away her brown hair away from her sweaty forehead. The blonde's maternal instincts were kicking into overdrive. "But we don't get sick…" the vampire continued, "When we die, it's fast and sudden and it's certainly not drawn out in illness."
"Don't jinx it." Megan said, stopping in her snooping to look at Rose. She gave a small smile. "You aren't going to die."
Rose chuckled. "Such a human thing to say."
"Well, I am human…well sort of." Megan reminded her as she spotted a book next to Damon's bedroom. "Gone with the Wind." She read the title out loud. "Mm."
"You haven't been in Damon's bedroom before, have you?"
Megan shook her head, sitting the book down. "Nope, never had the need to."
"Not what you expected?"
"I don't know what I expected to be in here. I never thought about it. I'll leave that to Charlene." Megan grinned at the blonde, and Charlene shook her head with a smile. She sat down on the bed beside Rose, smoothing one of her hands on the bed sheets. "Though I did figure he would have silk bedsheets. Seems like it would be something he would have."
"Funny, I thought the same thing when I saw Damon's bed for the first time." Charlene gave a laugh.
Rose looked between the two, amused. "You know…both of you are so lucky…" she said quietly, gaining their attention. "No one's ever loved me the way you are loved."
"Oh I don't know about that." Charlene tried to tell her, but Rose shook her head.
"Trevor was my best friend. Nothing more. I spent all those years on the run from Elijah. I just never thought it was a good idea to set up roots. The whole idea of family is not exactly compatible with being a vampire." Rose was quiet for a moment as she rested back against the bed, turning her body so she was still looking at Charlene and Megan. "Why are you so eager to give up?"
They didn't expect that question if the looks they gave each other was any hint.
"We aren't giving up." Megan was the one to finally answer. "We are just trying to protect our friends, that's all." She couldn't help the little bit of frustration that showed up in her voice. Why was that so hard to understand? Not wanting to talk about it, she grabbed a glass of blood on the bedside table and held it out towards Rose. "Here, take this. It might help you feel better."
Rose took the glass, but she wasn't done with the conversation they were having. "What do you call this whole deal with Elijah?"
"Well, I don't call it giving up. I…I just thought it was a good option." Megan said, not knowing how else to answer Rose's question.
"It's your easiest option."
"Rose, that's not fair." Charlene told her. "Megan did what she thought was best, and if Megan trusts Elijah that he will keep his end of the deal, then I believe that he will." Charlene glanced over at Megan, who gave her a grateful smile. She easily returned. She might not trust Elijah, but she trusted her best friend.
"Do you really think that your sister destroyed the moonstone?" Rose asked, changing the subject.
"I spoke with her, and she seems to think she did, but I mean, she did have the help of another witch. And it was Elijah's…so no, I don't think she did." Megan decided to be honest about it. "But she wants to believe that it did, and I don't have the heart to tell her."
"You really are determined to die, aren't you?" Rose murmured, sinking back into the covers. "At least, I ran. You guys aren't even trying." She closed her eyes. "I'm so tired…"
"Try and get some sleep." Charlene said softly, covering her up. "If you need anything, just call for me and I'll be right there." Rose said nothing in response. So, she figured the vampire had fallen asleep.
"I hate this for her." Megan said quietly as they started to leave the room. "To be dying slowly…it must be awful."
"Yeah…" Charlene was quiet for a moment. "I feel so guilty…"
Megan frowned, turning to look at her. "Guilty? Why do you feel guilty?"
"That werewolf…Jules…was trying to attack me but Rose pushed me out of the way. If I had moved out of the way when I was supposed to, Rose wouldn't be dying right now, and Damon wouldn't be pretending to be okay when I know he isn't, and he wouldn't be trying to push me away." She sighed, running her fingers through her blonde hair.
"But if she hadn't pushed you out of the way, you would be the one dying right now." Megan reminded her. "And that would be even worse. Who knows what Damon would do if you ended up dying."
Charlene said nothing. Megan had a point. If she was dying right now, Damon would probably end up going into a hole that he wouldn't be able to get out of. They almost made it out of the door, but was stopped by the sound of Rose's voice. Megan and Charlene turned to see her going in and out of sleep wiggling on the bed. Her eyes fluttered open.
"No, stop, wait…" she mumbled, looking out of it. "Tell them to prepare the horses." She was clearly hallucinating.
Charlene went back over to her while Megan stayed where she was. "Lay back down." She told Rose softly, pushing her gently back down on the bed. "You need to get some sleep. I'm sure you'll feel better in the morning."
"Trevor, don't be stupid…you're never going to make it before the sun." Rose abruptly sat up, shoving Charlene's hands away from her as she gasped out in pain. "Charlene…Charlene…I need…I need…blood."
"Okay, okay." Charlene quickly got the glass from the table and handed it over.
Rose grasped it with shaky hands, taking a drink from the glass. But it wouldn't stay down, and she ended up throwing all of it up. She hacked out the blood all over the bedsheets, staining them. Rose coughed roughly, her body curling in on itself. Charlene rubbed her back trying to comfort her.
"Megan, go get a wet washrag from the bathroom." The blonde quickly told her best friend, turning towards her.
"Okay!" Megan ran into the bathroom and Charlene turned back around to look back at Rose, but the older vampire was gone.
Charlene jumped up to her feet. "Rose?! Where are you?" she called out as Megan returned from the bathroom.
Seeing that Rose wasn't on the bed anymore, Megan's eyes went wide. "Wha…where did she go?!"
"I don't know."
Suddenly, Elena came into the room, both of them looking at her surprised, not expecting her to be here.
"Elena, what are you doing here?" Charlene asked.
"I wanted to see how Rose was doing." Elena answered.
Before Charlene could say anything, Rose popped up behind Elena. "Katerina!" She growled, and Elena turned around. In an instant, Rose had Elena up against the wall, her face changed.
Elena screamed.
"Rose!" Charlene and Megan exclaimed at the same time.
Rose ignored them, focused on Elena as she slammed one of her hands against the wall. "It's all your fault, Katerina!" She spat out. "You Katerina, you did this!"
"Rose, stop it!" Megan cried out. "That's Elena! She isn't Katherine."
If Rose didn't let go of Elena, Charlene wouldn't have hesitated to go over there and tear the older vampire away from her sister. Luckily though, Rose's face went back to normal, and she looked horrified as she let go of Elena and stepped back from her.
"Oh my god, Elena." Rose breathed. "I'm so sorry." She moved further away from her, shaking her head slowly. "I don't know what's happening to me…I'm sorry." Her eyes teared up.
Charlene went up to her, sliding an arm over Rose's shoulder. "It's going to be alright." She soothed. "Let's just get back into bed, okay? You're going to be okay." As she took Rose over to the bed, Megan turned to Elena, going over to her.
"Are you okay?" she asked.
"I am." Elena glanced over at Rose as Charlene put her into Damon's bed. "She's dying, isn't she?"
Megan nodded sadly. "She is." She answered quietly.
"My mind…" Rose murmured to Charlene, letting the blonde put her in bed. "I'm…"
"I know…you don't have to keep apologizing." Charlene reassured her. "You only blacked out for a moment."
"I'm sorry…don't be scared of me."
Charlene rubbed her shoulder. "Trust me, I'm not. It takes a lot to scare me." She gave her a small smile. "You still need to get some rest."
Rose laid down on the bed, closing her eyes for a moment before they opened back up again. Charlene could see the fear in her eyes.
"I'm scared…" she whimpered.
"I know, but I'm right here. I'm not planning on going anywhere, I promise."
"Here…" Rose muttered. "Where's here?"
"Damon's bedroom…" Charlene told her as Rose tried to get out of bed, but she gently pushed the older vampire back down. "You're in Damon's bedroom. You're safe."
Rose's eyes welled with tears. "I want to go home…"
"Why don't you tell us about it?" Megan suggested as she and Elena went up to the bed. "I'd love to hear all about it."
From the look in her eyes, Rose got lost in a memory. "St. Austell…" she started off quietly. "Thirty kilometers south of London. With fields and trees and horses."
"It sounds beautiful." Elena said softly.
"When you live long enough, everything disappears…" Rose sighed sadly, snuggling into the bed with her eyes closed. "So much time wasted, I just wish I hadn't been so afraid." She went quiet and her breathing evened out.
Charlene, Megan, and Elena stared at Rose's sleeping form sadly.
