Chapter 7- A New Home
Clary was the first to wake as light began to break through the thick tree canopy. Opening her eyes, she could picture the sun's rays warming the sky as it lifted above the mountains. The cold dawn air brushed her cheeks but she remained warm, snuggled against Jace's chest and under his jacket. Clary had never slept outside until she was taken prisoner but with Jace, she felt more at peace than she had in her own bed. Closing her eyes, she leaned her head back against Jace's chest. Taking a moment to listen to the rise and fall of his chest and the rhythm of his heart beating peacefully in his chest; debating whether or not she wanted to get up. When the birds started to sing their songs in earnest, she decided it was time to get the day started. Afterall, she couldn't stay nestled up in a man's chest, let alone one she had just met.
Smiling, Clary slowly lifted her head from Jace's chest. Jace's eyes were closed and his cheeks slightly red from the cold air. Still, he was as handsome in sleep as he was awake. It would be stupid to deny that Clary was attracted to him but it wasn't something she intended to act upon. It had been her experience that men who looked like Jace were often self centered and only interested in one thing; getting between her legs than what was between her ears. Isabelle had warned her about the many ways men attempted to charm women at court and she found herself thankful for the a moment to look around, she saw the blue flames still burned brightly keeping the group warm. And now, it was a group for the pair of deer that had remained with them through the night. The buck she had seen last night was beginning to stir as was the sweet doe.
Clary wanted to pet the doe and thank her for keeping her company last night. Yet Jace's arms tighten around her when she began to adjust. The man was still asleep but after a few attempts it was clear that there was no escaping from his grip without waking him and Clary saw little point in trying. Jace was a friend of Magnus, Alec, and Max and despite working for the guardian, he hadn't done anything to hurt her. Last night had been a low point in her life. She had felt like her world was crumbling around her. Jace not only found her but did everything he could to help her. Perhaps, he wasn't like the other gentlemen. Yet, he might be someone worthy of her trust, as long as she didn't fall for him.
"What are you thinking about?" A husky voice purred.
Clary turned her head to see a pair of golden eyes looking down and studying her. She couldn't help but blush, feeling the intensity of his gaze. He had caught her off guard, damn him.
"I was just thinking about how long I would have to put up with your snoring until you woke up." Clay teased.
Jace smiled, clearly not fooled.
"I don't snore, Red," he teased in return. "And if you wanted to wake me up, all you had to do was tap me."
"Maybe I was trying to be nice by letting you sleep in." She quipped, playfully.
"Or, you were thinking about how handsome I was and if you could steal a kiss?" Jace replied, seductively. "I could close my eyes and pretend to sleep again if you want?" He winked.
"You are so obnoxious." Clary laughed, pushing forward and pulling herself off of his lap. "I think I would rather kiss a frog."
"Careful," Jace replied. "That can be arranged, I know where to find them."
The sweet doe who had remained with Clary last night was now making her way towards the redhead. Reaching her hand out, Clary began to lavish the creature with attention. Grateful for her company during the chaos last night.
"She likes you." Jace spoke, pulling himself off of the ground. Yawning, and stretching his arms and legs.
"What is her name?" Clary asked.
"Ummmm…" Jace hesitated then shrugged. "Deer?"
Clary frowned, shaking her head. She supposed Jace wasn't one to name his fur friends assuming that is what they were.
"I shall call you Doe." She smiled. Scratching the creature's ears.
"Really? Not very original?"
"More original than deer." Clary countered.
Jace smirked, staring at her as the buck drew near her; also seeking attention. She could practically feel the blonde roll his eyes at her.
"Are you jealous?" Clary giggled, caressing the bucks' fur.
"If you are done making friends, we should really get going, Clary." The blonde smiled, extending his hand to her. The redhead returned his smile and placed his jacket over her shoulders. He took her bag and her bow in his other hand before taking hers in the other.
"You don't have to carry my things." the young maiden protested.
"I know but forgive me for wanting to insure you don't run off again. A morning quest to the other side of the forest doesn't seem appealing at the moment." Jace replied, sweetly.
Clary frowned, suddenly feeling guilty. She didn't mean to cause him so much trouble.
"That won't happen again. I promise, I'll be good." she swore.
"I have a hard time believing that." Jace teased, giving her a reassuring smile and lightly squeezed her hand for good measure.
Clary couldn't help the small shiver run down her spine as her skin tingled where he had her hand in his.
"Are we far from the center of the forest?" she inquired.
"About an hour." Jace spoke, leading her through a narrow batch of trees.
"Is there food in the center of the forest? I'm starving." Clary replied.
"Well the bakery is closed but I can check with the butcher." He teased. Clary rolled her eyes.
"I meant berries or something. I know we are out in the wilderness, Jace." She retorted trying to pull her hand from his but his grip was strong.
"I'll find us some berries but you will have to learn which ones you can eat and which are poisonous." The blonde instructed.
"I don't mind berries but is there anything else to eat? I know you said there was no hunting but Max said that Alec would come to the forest and fish." She asked.
"Yes, there is a giant lake in the center of the forest. You can fish but as you already know, hunting is forbidden. So, I hope you aren't craving venison anytime soon."
"Shhh! Don't say that around them!" Clary chastised, looking towards Doe and the Buck, who she named "Buck" following behind them.
Jace laughed and she had to admit that the sound was like music.
"I assure you, they know not what we speak of. They have grown up in the forest and have been spoiled rotten." He teased.
"I suppose I have much to learn about the forest."
"That you do. While the forest spirit protects those in his forest, this place is not without its dangers. You would be wise to keep to the center of the forest." Jace explained, releasing her hand to climb a rather steep passage.
"Friendly advice, eh"
"I guess that depends on whether or not you consider me a friend?" Jace retorted, reaching down to help her up the path.
"Depends." she smiled, taking his hand.
"On?"
"Rather or not you teach me how to fish." Clary teased. Jace rolled his eyes and Clary couldn't help but giggle.
The pair continued trucking through the forest making idle chit chat until they saw the dense trees begin to widen. Clary grew quiet as Jace continued to lead her through to the clearing; never releasing her hand. While she knew Jace had given her his word, a part of her was still apprehensive. Jace seemed to sense this within her and stopped.
"Don't worry, I promise no one will hurt you here." Jace promised, her green eyes meeting his gaze. Clary shook her head.
"Lately Jace, I find that almost everyone is trying to hurt me." she countered taking a step into the clearing.
Jace had mumbled something but she didn't catch it. Her attention was now on the beautiful opening. It was as if someone had pulled the scene right from a fairy tale. The lake had crystal clear water and was filled by a small waterfall that came from a makeshift dam in the upper area. Flowers and tall grass filled the small plain and despite its beauty, something in her stomach dropped. The place seemed familiar, yet she knew she had never been there before. Taking a deep breath she turned to further appraise the giant tree to the left of the clearing. It towered over the other trees and must have been a few stories tall. It was as round as a stately mansion and someone had carved the outline of a wolf in its center. Clary wondered how it would have been done. It would take a giant to reach that high. At the bottom of the tree were giant roots that rose out of the earth and in some places were elevated off the ground at least ten feet high.
"This place…it is absolutely amazing." Clary spoke, turning to look at Jace who had been studying her intently.
She met his gaze and felt frozen by the intensity she saw in his eyes. Yes, there was hunger there. It wasn't a secret that he found her attractive but there was something more. A darkness, loneliness, and pain, so much pain.
"There is a shelter in the large tree in the mouth of the wolf. It is dry and safe." Jace spoke, turning away. "There is a hearth for a fire, a bed, and it will keep you safe at night. Come, I will show you."
Jace took her hand once again and led her across the clearing towards the tree. Clary didn't protest, she didn't want to upset him. Yet, she didn't know how to address any of the emotions she saw. Once they were across the cleaning, Clary was even more star struck. While the tree had been massive from the outskirts, it was even more impressive up close. It was lucky that she wasn't afraid of heights but how she was going to climb such a steep area, she knew not.
"How are we supposed to get all the way up there?" the small redhead inquired.
"There is a rope ladder." Jace replied pointing to the other side of the tree.
When they finally reached the area he mentioned, she was finally able to see it. It looked sturdy but she told Jace to go up first just in case. He happily agreed and began making his way up with her in toe. Clary was happy that the cave entrance was in the trunk of the tree and not on top. She wasn't afraid of heights but anyone with a sense of self preservation would be concerned that a home lay in the mouth of a wolf.
When the pair finally reached the cave Jace turned around and pulled her up before leading her into the space. The first thing she noticed was that despite its outside appearance, the cave was huge. There was a hearth for a fire, a small wooden table, a kitchen area with cabinets and a basin for dishes, and on the other side of the room was a large makeshift bed filled with blankets, pillows, and furs. The most surprising thing was that despite being open to the elements, it was spotless.
"What do you think?" Jace asked.
"I think it is incredible and very clean."
Jace laughed. "Yes, well I like to keep things organized," he replied. Clary tilted her head.
"This is where you live?" she asked. The blonde frowned.
"Use to live. Right now this is where you will stay." he explained.
"If this is where I will stay then where will you be?"
"Around. I can make do most anywhere." Jace shrugged. Clary turned around and faced him. Taking a step towards him, she quickly grabbed his arm.
"Absolutely not!" Clary command. Jace was taken aback.
" I am not going to take your home and make you sleep outside! That isn't right."
"So...you are suggesting that we share?" Jace asked coyly. She could feel her cheeks warm.
"Yes, though not in the way you are clearly thinking." Clary retorted. "There is more than enough space to make do for two beds. I can't accept staying here when I know you are stuck outside."
Jace sighed. Reaching up to move a strand of hair from her face.
"The thing is, Red. I don't spend too much time here."
"You still need a safe and dry place to sleep, Jace." she countered.
"That is true but with the exception of new moons, I don't spend the night here," he explained.
"Oh…" Clary replied. "Where do you spend the night then?" she asked, feeling a bit stupid that she hadn't thought to ask him if he had someone. Sensing the heaviness of her question Jace was quick to put her at ease.
"It isn't like that. I am assisting the guardian all night. From sunset to sunrise, I am out and about in the forest. I usually don't sleep until I get home in the early morning if at all. The guardian's magic usually gives me all the energy I need." the blonde explained.
Clary looked at him in awe, trying to absorb his words. How could the guardian share his powers and why would he need to do so? Jace sighed, sensing the onslaught of questions plaguing her mind.
"I know you have more questions but where you are staying isn't up for debate. The guardian agreed that staying in here would be the best fit."
"The debate isn't where I am staying but where YOU will be staying." Clary argued.
"We will share the bed. You can sleep during the day and I can sleep at night." she continued. "I can not accept putting you out, please Jace."
Jace's eyes sparkled mischievously before he made his way towards the kitchen cabinets. Clary watched him as he pulled out a jar of berries and a loaf of bread.
"We can even make another bed." she argued.
"One bed, Red" he countered. "One bed is fine and if you feel the need to take a nap then I can just roll over."
"I doubt that will be a problem and I should probably warn you that if you try anything I will turn you into a chew toy for the guardian." Clary huffed, making her way towards the kitchen.
"I will be a gentleman, unless you ask me nicely not to be." the blonde grinned.
Clary was about to reply with something equally as snarky when her stomach growled. Jace shook her head.
"I suppose it is time we ate. Come, I will show you around the kitchen and after where you can find berries."
After breakfast the pair left the tree to explore the clearing. Jace showed her where to find patches of berry bushes and instructed her which ones were poisonous. He also showed her where she could find mushrooms and various herbs.
"The people in the village give offerings to the wolf god. He obviously doesn't have a need for it so I've been collecting it. That is where I got the bread from." Jace explained.
"I suppose since you help the guardian you are providing them a service. It seems only right that you are compensated in some way." Clary spoke, picking some herbs. "I feel wrong about taking it though. As I have only caused them trouble."
"You are a guest of the guardian." Jace shrugged.
"I believe you mean prisoner." she corrected.
Jace frowned, not liking the direction her thoughts were going.
"For just a while, Clary. Right now, you are under his protection and my care. I have to feed you." he continued. "What kind of host would I be if I let a beautiful lady starve to death."
"There are more than enough berries and-" she argued.
"No, Clary. Your body can't live off of just berries. It needs other food groups to be strong." he interrupted. "If you feel bad then think of a way you can do something for the village once you receive the god's blessing." Clary sighed, knowing that the battle was lost.
"IF I receive his blessing and he doesn't decide to make me a snack." she quipped. Jace gave her a sour look and clearly wasn't going to argue with her.
" I will find some way to repay the village, though." the redhead added, trying to ease the tension in the air.
"I would expect nothing else from you, sweetheart," he replied.
The day passed by quickly and the sun was setting as the pair made their way back to the tree. Clary went first this time as Jace followed carrying a basket of fresh berries, herbs, and eggs. The climb wasn't so bad but Clary was beginning to feel tired from the events of the day. The humidity toppled with the sun and various elevations wore her out. Despite the peaceful sleep she had the night prior, she found herself exhausted.
"I have to go now, Clary." Jace spoke solemnly, putting the basket on the table. "The guardian will be expecting me."
"Don't you want to stay and eat a light dinner first?" she asked nervously. "Or will he eat you if you're late?" Clary teased trying to lighten the mood. She didn't want Jace to go.
"Sorry to disappoint you but little redheads are far more tasty." he teased, walking towards her and taking her hand. She blushed as he brought it to his lips and kissed it.
"Remember your promise, no venturing outside at night. The guardian will not be happy if he has to find you wondering about. Nor will I be here to protect you."
Clary nodded hesitantly, the giant wolf still scared her. It must have been evident in her expression because Jace brought his hand to her face, trying to calm her.
"He won't hurt you, Clary. Just please, promise me you'll stay in the shelter." Jace implored.
Clary relaxed into his touch and whispered, "I promise. Will you be back tomorrow to show me more of the forest?" she asked.
Jace smiled, "I'll be back in the morning, shortly after sunrise. There is a quick errand I need to run."
Clary nodded her head as Jace gave her hand one last kiss before leaving the cave. Finally, she was alone and while she had wanted nothing more than to escape this place two days ago, she found herself looking forward to spending another day with Jace tomorrow. Sighing, she secretly cursed her luck and wished Magnus had at least had the decency to warn her about Jace. Then again, given how he had dolled her up before coming here he might have been all too aware how attractive his friend was. Taking another deep breath, Clary looked out the cave entrance as the sun lowered behind the trees. Rather she escaped or not, the decision would not be made tonight. She was going to be good and do her best not to anger the wolf god further.
