Chapter 2
A/N: Hi again! Just wanted to note for this chapter that there's a (really) slight spoiler for Sabine's backstory. I think it's from season 3? Anyways, that's the only thing I wanted to tell you. Also, feel free to give me feedback or requests. I'm always open to constructive criticism and ideas! Enjoy!
"It's a trap!" Sabine shouted. She was furious at herself. How could they have been stupid enough to fall into the Empire's trap? Were they really that desperate?
She took aim at the officer. The woman had probably already contacted the Empire. Chopper began shrieking wildly. He dashed in front of Sabine, knocking her off balance and sending her blast wildly off target.
"Chopper! What are you doing?" she snapped at the droid, "we fell right into their trap! The Empire—"
But the droid continued his protests. Realization dawned on her. Slowly, Sabine lowered her blasters, without taking her eyes from the woman.
"What's he doing?" Asked Ezra, his stance faltering.
"He says—"
"Chopper?"
Sabine and Ezra's gaze snapped to the officer, who had been standing there silently the whole time. Now that Sabine thought about it, Imperials usually did a lot more of… Well, anything whenever she encountered them. They didn't just stand there peacefully, not unless they were very brave and had something up their sleeves.
Even if Chopper knows her, we still can't be sure that we can—
A shout behind her caused them all to whip around. Weapons bared, Kanan and Zeb charged into the room. Ezra reached out to stop him, but he was too late. With a strong Force-push, Kanan slammed the woman into the wall with a heavy thud.
"Come on!" he shouted, "We've got to get out of here before the rest show up!"
"Kanan—"
"Not now, Ezra," he said, picking up his comm.
"Kanan !" repeated Sabine, and this time, he stopped and looked at them, comm silently held up to his mouth.
"She's not with the Empire!"
Chopper grumbled indignantly.
"Yeah, Chop, you still get the credit."
Kanan's face clouded with confusion, and he looked over at the woman in officer's clothes, who was slowly stumbling to her feet. Hesitantly, he deactivated his lightsaber, Ezra following him shortly after.
Brushing off her uniform, she threw her cap aside in disgust and stepped towards them. She wore the standard, gray uniform that most Imperial officers wore. Sabine had never liked them. They were entirely too plain. She seemed to be either in her late twenties or early thirties and her hair was an ashy blonde, but it was her eyes that struck Sabine as oddly familiar.
"I wasn't sure anyone received my transmission," she said in a heavily accented voice. She gazed in amazement at Kanan and Ezra with those strange eyes, "it's been a long time since I've seen a Jedi."
"You've met other Jedi?" Ezra blurted out, eyes widening.
"Yes," the woman replied, eyes becoming distant, "a long time ago."
Kanan's eyebrows knit together. His stance was still uneasy, and he watched the stranger cautiously, "Who are you?"
"My name's Omega," she replied, and Chopper went back into hysterics. Rolling forward, he began speaking rapidly to Omega. Sabine could barely make out what the droid was saying, but it was clear that they had met before.
"Hera?! She's alright?" she exclaimed when Chopper finished.
Kanan suddenly became defensive, hand going down to his blaster, "how do you know Hera?"
"We met years ago on Ryloth." She smiled, "we were delivering supplies and helped her escape from the Empire."
Gradually, Kanan relaxed.
Sabine wanted to hear more of the story, but Omega brought something out of her pocket. "I didn't simply call you for a lift." She held up the small disk, a troubled look on her face, "When I was undercover in the Imperial fleet, I caught wind of a plan in early development. From what I could figure out, it's some kind of weapon. At least, it's important enough that it's kept top secret. Only a few people in the sector fleet know anything about it.
"I've never been involved in your rebellion. I usually work alone, but this is something big. Something bigger than any one person can handle."
As Omega spoke, Sabine felt her stomach fall. Could it be…? No. She'd destroyed those plans when she left the academy. The Empire had no way of bringing it back. Still, a knot of unease grew in the bottom of her stomach.
"Do you know what it is?" Asked Ezra, voice anxious.
Omega shook her head, "I know where it's being constructed, but the file was too heavily encrypted for me to figure out anything else."
"We have some people in the rebellion skilled enough that they could crack it," Kanan suggested, but Omega smiled ruefully.
"I was trained by one of the best and had very little luck. You could try, but it is very well encrypted."
Kanan's commlink beeped and everyone's eyes moved to him. Absentmindedly, he lifted it to his mouth,
"This is Spectre-1—"
"Kanan, you have to get out of there!" Hera's voice was urgent, and Sabine immediately knew something was seriously wrong. "A Star Destroyer just arrived in the system. They're boarding the station!"
"Karabast!" Zeb cursed before the group dashed out of the room, heading in the direction of the Ghost. As they rounded a corner, Zeb cursed again. A dozen stormtroopers turned in unison and began firing. Sabine dove behind one of the hollows in the walls.
Screaming from the stormtroopers told her Zeb had gone on the offensive, and she peeked out of her hiding place. And watched as more stormtroopers poured into the hallway. As Zeb backed up, she grabbed his arm and pulled him back into cover only seconds before blaster fire rained down on where he had been standing. Kanan and Ezra, who had been blocking the blasts with their lightsabers the best they could were also forced into cover.
Sabine peered out from cover again. She grinned when she noticed something she had missed before. The shelter she and Zeb were stationed behind was a door. Across the hallway, on the opposite side of the doors sat the control panel. If she could activate the bulkhead, she could separate them from the dozens stormtroopers on the other side.
But the control panel is on the other side, I couldn't get there without being shot... This station was old. Perhaps an EMP grenade could cause the system to short circuit? Sabine reached into her pack, desperately searching through its contents for an EMP grenade.
"What're you doing?" Zeb grunted as he got off a few shots from his borifle, "you'll blow us all to bits!"
"I know what I'm doing," she retorted, hoping desperately that she still had some stashed in here. She didn't use these often, and nowadays they were difficult to find. Rex had told her that during the war, they used them all the time. "Called em' droid poppers," he had said.
Her hand closed around a familiar shape. "Gotcha!" she exclaimed triumphantly, picking the small orb out of her bag. "Cover me!" she shouted to Zeb and ducked out into the hallway, trusting her friend totally. She grinned in satisfaction as the stormtroopers dove away from the grenade when it hit the ground next to the panel.
As it exploded, the electrical charge climbed up the wall to the panel, sending sparks in all directions. The door slid shut just as the stormtroopers realized their mistake.
Sabine whooped in victory. The group slowly stepped out of their cover, catching their breath.
"Quick thinking, Sabine," Kanan congratulated, and she stood a bit taller.
"Yeah, quick thinking, Sabine!" added Ezra, somewhat desperately.
"Yeah," Said Omega, "but now Chopper's powered down. The group behind them, where Chopper had fallen over, system shut down because of the grenade.
"I see why they're called droid poppers, now," Sabine said, lifting Chopper back to his feet. She whacked the droid's head, and he began to power back up, already griping.
"Yeah, Chop, I know, I'm sorry," Sabine apologized as the astromech wailed at her. The droid smacked her with an arm.
"Okay, that's fair, now will you let it go?" She said, and Chopper finally quieted down. With the sudden silence, Sabine noticed a muffled beeping.
"Is that—?"
The works had barely left her mouth before the door exploded.
A/N: Sorry about the cliffhanger. Oh, wait, no I'm not! Muahahahaha!
