Chapter 2: Making Changes and Healing

Wednesday, July 31st 1991 12:00 AM, Hut on the rock, The North Sea, English Territorial Sea

*BOOM* Harry looked up with a slight smile on his face, everything was going like last time.

*BOOM* Hagrid knocked again. Though this time Dudley jerked awake. "Where's the cannon?" He said and in Harry's opinion, he sounded just as stupid this time as he did last time.

There was a crash behind them as Uncle Vernon came skidding into the room. Just like last time he was holding a rifle in his hands. "Who's there?" The large man bellowed, "I warn you! I'm armed!"

There was a pause. Then- *SMASH* and just like that Hagrid knocked down the door of the little hut they were currently staying in, Harry quickly hid his smile, for he knew he should be scared at an unknown man knocking down the door.

"Sorry abou' tha'" Hagrid said and just like last time he walked in and turned around before setting the door back on its hinges.

"Couldn' make us a cup o' tea could yeh? 's not bin an easy journey…" He strode over to the sofa where Dudley sat frozen with fear and said "Budge up yeh great lump." Dudley squeaked and ran to hide behind his mother, who was crouching, terrified, behind Uncle Vernon. "An here's Harry!" Hagrid said.

Everything continued going just like the last time he had spent this very night in the cabin.

Harry POV

Wednesday, July 31st 1991 9:15 AM, 80 Charing Cross Road, Covent Garden, London, UK

Approaching the Leaky Cauldron. I put a wandless compulsion on Hagrid to not mention my name or identity in or near the Leaky Cauldron or Diagon Alley, I did not after all want to be re-introduced to the wizarding world looking like a ragamuffin. A wandless compulsion was hard to do, especially for someone with the bound magic of an eleven-year-old, but I just about managed it, though it definitely did tire me out and also made me happy Hermione would be casting the next compulsion.

As Hagrid and I exited Gringotts after we collected gold from my vault and the philosophers stone from Flamel's vault, we came across the Granger family. I thought I saw Hermione wink at me but I wasn't quite sure

Hermione POV

I had managed to convince my parents to take me to Diagon Alley for more books today. I was worried when we only arrived at 9:10 AM instead of the planned 9:00 AM but it appeared the fates had intervened because right as we were approaching Gringotts I saw Harry and Hagrid exit the bank. I winked at Harry as I very discreetly cast the required compulsion charm on Hagrid.

"Yeh mind if I go up ter the leaky fer a drink? Those carts o' 'em always make me queasy." And without waiting for an answer Hagrid walked off.

My mother frowned at this. "That doesn't seem right, look at the poor dear. He looks like he's a nine-year-old wearing the hand-me-down clothes of a thirteen-year-old. Come on Daniel, Hermione."

(-oI0Io-)

Harry POV

Just as planned Hagrid had left me alone on the front steps of Gringotts, and within moments I was approached by someone who looked like an older Hermione.

"Hello dear, I'm sorry but I couldn't help but overhear that man telling you he was off to the bar, and I don't think it's nice of him to leave you alone to do your shopping. Would you like to come with us?"

I smiled at her and although she probably believed it was a grateful one, it was actually of relief that the plan was working. "I- I really wouldn't want to be any trouble, Madam." I fake stuttered, I felt a little bad for manipulating the woman, but then again, I was following the instructions of a goddess.

"Oh of course it isn't any trouble dear. We still have to do most of Hermione's shopping. We've been here before to get some books, but we haven't gotten everything yet. Oh, I'm sorry, I haven't properly introduced us. I'm Dr Emma Granger, this is my Husband Dr Daniel Granger and our daughter Hermione."

"Nice to meet you, Doctor." I said and then I shyly said "I'm Harry."

Hermione smiled at him and said, "Nice to meet you, Harry."

Daniel also grinned at him and answered "Nice to meet you, Harry. I have to ask though, where are your parents? I mean no offence by this but that tall man did not look like your father."

I blushed lightly and say "Oh no sir, he's the gamekeeper at Hogwarts, he was sent to escort me to do my shopping. My parents th- they passed away." I don't know why but acting like a shy eleven-year-old is getting easier.

Daniel suddenly looked embarrassed "I'm sorry, I- that was insensitive."

I smiled sadly before turning towards Emma and asking "What shop are we going to first?"

Emma, who clearly understood that I was trying to change the subject smiled at me and answered "We'll have to go back to Gringotts first, we need to buy some galleons."

As I entered the bank I acted like I had a brainwave. "Doctor Granger, I just had an idea. Hagrid said my dad was from an old pureblood family. I think I should ask if my parents had a will made or filed here."

"Call me Emma, and my Husband Daniel. If that's what you want to do then go ahead."

As we entered something very weird happened, we walked past a tall boy with light blonde hair and a girl of average height with chestnut brown hair walking the other way. As I looked at the boy he looked right at me smirked and winked. At the time I thought it quite odd but it slipped my mind as we approached a pair of free counters.

I approached the left one and talked to the goblin "I'm sorry to disturb you, sir, my name is Harry Potter and I was told my parents were quite wealthy. I was wondering whether they left a will behind?"

The goblin looked at me and frowned. "Harry Potter? Right, and I'm the Minister for Magic."

I looked at him feeling annoyed, what's his problem I thought to myself. "I have my key." And as I said it I grabbed my key from my pocket and put it on the counter.

As he saw the key he put a piece of parchment and a dagger on the counter and said "Please prick your finger and let a drop of blood fall on the parchment."

When I did the blood spread from where it fell on the parchment to the rest of it until writing appeared.

Harold James Potter b. July 31st 1980

Father: Lord James Charlus Potter b. March 27th 1960

Mother: Lady Lily Marie Potter (née Evans) b. January 30th 1960

"My apologies Mister Potter, but I had to be sure. You're the fourth person to come in today claiming they're Harry Potter. An average of 17 people a year have tried that since the passing of your parents. Give me a moment and I'll call a runner to have you brought to the Potter account manager." He said looking almost apologetic although for a Goblin he might as well be angry or depressed. Then he barked something in the Goblin tongue.

I took the opportunity to quickly explain what was happening to the Grangers. Emma nodded at me and said "Don't worry Harry dear, here is our planned itinerary, we'll try to spend no more than an hour in each shop. Come look for us when you're done." And she handed me a piece of paper with the names of stores written down in order.

When another goblin came to me and asked "Mister Potter? I'm here to take you to your account manager."

"Thank you, sir." I answered. The goblin looked curiously at me before nodding and walking away.

I followed him down the hall and through a door, he took me through a maze of hallways before stopping at a bronze door with a crest on I thought it might be the Potter crest it had a P in the middle with a Griffin on the left and a Thestral on the right. it had the words Semper Fortis, Semper Fidelis under the P.

He looked at me and said "Wait here a moment" then he knocked and entered. I heard some people speaking, then I heard a voice shout something then I saw Griphook come back out.

"You may enter, Mister Potter." as I entered I walked past someone's desk and into an office.

I looked around the office, there was a big mahogany desk with a surly-looking goblin sitting behind it. "Mister Potter. I am Ragnok VIII, I have been the Potter account manager for the last 49 years." He said. "Care to tell me why in Hecate's name you haven't responded to any of my 13 requests to come to see me to discuss your accounts and your monthly expenses?"

"Sir, I've never received a letter from you. In fact, until last night I didn't know I was a wizard, and until forty-five minutes ago I didn't even know I had an account here, or a vault, or an account manager. This time yesterday I didn't even know there was a bank here, for fucks sake!" I exclaimed. I was starting to have fun playing the innocent idiot. I sighed, "My apologies, Account Manager Ragnok, that was rude."

Ragnok stared at me for a minute without saying anything. I was starting to feel uncomfortable when he smirked at me. "Although I'm unhappy to hear it. I'm happy to say you remind me a lot of your father." then he hesitated "And your grandfather. And your great-grandfather. And your great-great-grandfather on the one occasion I met him. All passionate, good orators. Although you are a lot smaller and skinnier than you should be, seeing what your forefathers looked like."

Then he frowned at me. "Would you like to see one of our healers? For a fee of course." He smirked at me.

I looked at him. Smiled and nodded. "Yes, please sir. And please sir, call me Harry."

"Very well. Let's go. Harry." he said then he got up and walked towards the door.

(-oI0Io-)

Harry POV

Wednesday, July 31st 1991 9:54 AM, Gringotts Bank, Diagon Alley, London, UK

I was walking behind the Goblin through a labyrinth of tunnels and corridors until we finally made it to a room with a weird text on the door that I couldn't read, I was after all incapable of reading the Goblin Language.

I saw my account manager knock on the door. He then looked at me and said "Wait here please, Harry." Then he walked into the Gringotts infirmary.

I looked around the Hallway, It was nothing special. White walls, a few doors here and there. The doors all had texts on them but I couldn't read them for the life of me.

After a few moments of me standing around in the hallway, my account manager returned. "You may enter Harry." I entered and saw an infirmary. It looked a lot like the Hogwarts infirmary, except at the end of the room there were two raised marble slabs at about the same height as the beds.

A goblin looked at me and said "Mister Potter, I am Healer Sharptooth and once you're done admiring the views I'll be your healer for the day."

I blushed at his words "Of course, I'm sorry I'm not sure, should I address you as Healer, or just as Sir?"

The Healer looked at me with interest "The correct form of address is Healer Sharptooth, although you may address me as Healer."

"If that is all Mister Potter, I will be going now." Ragnok said.

"Oh I'm sorry Account Manager, you talked earlier about past expenses, could you list all my supposed expenses since October 31st 1981? And please, make sure you and the Healers are properly compensated for your troubles."

Ragnok again looked somewhat impressed, "Of course Harry, and please. Call me Ragnok." and then he left.

Healer Sharptooth looked at me with what I thought might be curiosity, though I still don't know how to read a goblin's facial expressions.

"Mister Potter, please lie down," he said as he pointed towards one of the two marble slabs.

I did thinking it'd be uncomfortable though I was quite surprised to notice it felt like lying on a cloud. "How on earth do you make a marble slab feel so soft? This is amazing!"

Healer Sharptooth smirked at me "Please close your eyes mister Potter, and do tell me if you feel anything out of the ordinary."

I spent a minute lying there before I first felt something. "I'm feeling all warm and tingly. It's kind of pleasant."

After a few seconds, it stopped again, and again I informed my healer of that.

Then after maybe two minutes I felt something hurt inside my chest though I couldn't locate where it came from, it felt like it came from everywhere. "Something is hurting a bit, I don't know why but I can't physically locate it inside my body."

He muttered "Only hurting a bit, is it? I'm surprised you aren't screaming in agony. 92% of your magic locked tighter than one of our vaults downstairs."

A minute or so later the pain moved to my head. Yet again I told Sharptooth.

Then maybe thirty seconds later my scar suddenly felt like someone was poking it with a red-hot poker. I started screaming out in agony.

"Mister Potter, are you alright?"

"What, in the name of Hecate, was that for?!" I shouted, I suddenly had the feeling the Goblin approved.

"My apologies mister Potter, but I need to talk with your account manager about it before I can tell you. Here, drink this." he handed me a vial and walked away.

When I emptied the vial the pain had faded away.

I spent about five minutes looking around until the healer came back with Ragnok. They were talking quite agitatedly in the Goblin tongue.

"Mister Potter, I have good news and bad news." the healer said. "The bad news is you not only have a Horcrux in your scar, but also several blocks and a drain on your magic. As well as a mental performance inhibitor. The good news is, we can fix all of that. However, there will be two side effects. The wards at a residence in Little Whinging, will no longer be powered by your magic which is good, vampiric wards were banned in 1632 for a reason, and using one on an infant is despicable. The bad news is that the protection your mother's sacrifice left on you might be destroyed."

"Do vampiric wards mean you have to be near them to power them?" I asked.

"No mister Potter, even here you are powering the wards in Little Whinging." It confirmed what I suspected though I was seething internally. I did my best not to show any of the anger I felt towards Dumbledore.

"How likely is it my mother's protection will be destroyed? And what exactly does my mother's protection do?"

"There's a twenty-five per cent chance it will be destroyed. What we're suggesting is that we do a very ancient and very powerful cleansing ritual, it will remove all foreign magics on you except for the Horcrux, we have another ritual for that one first. We're hoping that seeing as it's your mother's magic yours and hers will be similar enough that the ritual will recognize the magic as your own. As for what it does, It protects you from most attacks from the person against whom your mother invoked it, namely one Tom Marvolo Riddle, also known as Lord Voldemort, and any of their sworn servants."

I pondered it for a few minutes before nodding, "I'll do it."

Ragnok moved towards the door and said "I'll start making preparations."

"Ragnok?"

"Yes, Harry?"

"Would it be possible to have a message sent to the Granger family? They should be either at Ollivander's or Slugg's and Jigger's. Could you have someone tell the three of them that Harry will be here awhile and they should continue as planned, and I'll send them an owl as soon as possible?"

"Of course Harry" he answered, then he smirked "For a fee of course."

I smirked back at him "Would twenty galleons be enough?"

Ragnok looked approvingly then nodded.

"Then please make sure whoever delivers the message is paid twenty galleons from my vault. Oh, and take twenty per cent for the trouble of arranging it." I said.

Ragnok nodded, smiled and walked away.

Hermione POV

Wednesday, July 31st 1991 10:26 AM, Ollivander's, Diagon Alley, London, UK

We were just about to walk out of Ollivander's after purchasing the same wand as last time when a goblin entered.

"Are you the Grangers?" He questioned, and my dad nodded at him. "We are. Daniel Granger, how may I help you?"

"I was asked to deliver a message from Harry." the Goblin said.

"Very well, go ahead," my mother told him.

"Harry asked to have you informed that he'd be at Gringotts for quite some time yet, that you should continue as planned, and that he'd try to send you an owl as soon as possible." Then the Goblin promptly turned around and left.

I looked at my parents acting confused "That was weird. I hope Harry's okay, he seemed nice."

My dad shrugged, and we left Ollivander's. As we were walking down the Alley towards Slugg's and Jigger's we came across a little shop called "Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlour" and right at the front outside at a table sat a brunette about the same size as me and a tall blonde boy. The brunette was facing me, she looked me right in the eyes and raised her glass at me.

I thought it was rather weird, but I had other things on my mind. I presumed from Harry's message that I should as planned confound Hagrid into believing he had done Harry's shopping just like Dumbledore told him to.

I was so distracted I walked right into my dad. "Oh, sorry dad. I was distracted, I'm just so excited!"

He smiled at me "Don't worry honey. Just, We've arrived at the apothecary."

I smiled at my dad. And entered the store.

Harry POV

Wednesday, July 31st 1991 11:02 AM, Gringotts Ritual Chamber 1, Diagon Alley, London, UK

It had been about forty-five minutes since I saw my account manager leave when I was led into one of the other rooms I'd seen in the corridor earlier.

It was a white empty room, there were thirteen goblins and a very weird object in the room.

"Mister Potter, what we're going to do is a special incantation made by the goblins to remove a Horcrux from a human being without killing the host. It was invented when in 1275 a goblin went mad and turned his unwilling son into a Horcrux. We're going to be putting the soul fragment into the object lying there, it's designed to count the amount of soul pieces from the soul. It was invented in 1642 when a Bulgarian witch went crazy and made three Horcruxes. I must warn you, it will be quite painful and you might pass out."

"Ok, what do you want me to do?" I said with fake bravado, I felt a little worried about what would happen.

"You're going to strip naked, lie down on the floor where the soul-counter is lying. And put it on your chest."

"I'm sorry?"

"You heard me." Healer Sharptooth smirked. "Chop chop, time is gold, and you're wasting both."

I did as instructed, I was feeling a little worried now. As the Goblins started chanting in the Goblin tongue my scar started to feel warm.

After Five minutes it was so warm it felt like it'd been soaked in gasoline and lit on fire. It continued like that for two more minutes when I started screaming. After what felt like forever but was only four minutes. I saw black smoke come out of my forehead. At which point I blacked out from the pain

Hermione POV

Wednesday, July 31st 1991 12:19 PM, The Leaky Cauldron, Diagon Alley, London, UK

My parents and I were just entering the dingy pub when I spotted Hagrid sitting in the corner having a drink. I told my parents I was going to the bathroom and went towards the bathroom door next to him. When I entered I used my newly purchased wand to disillusion myself before going back to where Hagrid was and confounding him. I made him hide in a muggle alleyway before then returning to Hogwarts, and as soon as he'd arrived there he'd think he'd spent the day shopping with Harry and then set him on a train to the Dursleys. Then I walked back to the bathroom, cancelled the disillusionment charm and exited again.

I couldn't wait to be older again, confunduses and disillusionment charms are exhausting.

As I walked out of the bathroom and into the main room of The Leaky Cauldron I saw my parents sitting at a table near the window.

"You okay honey? You look a little peaky." dad said as I approached the table.

"Huh? Oh, I'm fine dad. Just hungry. Must be all the excitement."

"Well, then shall we order lunch?" my mom smiled at me.

Harry POV

Wednesday, July 31st 1991 01:26 PM, Gringotts Infirmary, Diagon Alley, London, UK

I groaned as I woke up on a wonderful mattress. I opened my eyes and saw a white ceiling.

"Where am I?" I groaned.

"Gringotts Infirmary." A gruff voice said.

"Healer Sharptooth?" I asked I thought it was him but I wasn't sure.

"No, I'm Lady Malfoy." The Goblin sassed. "Yes of course it's Healer Sharptooth! The Horcrux was successfully removed, and we have a team trying to track down the six other soul fragments. Now that you're awake we can get you into Ritual Chamber 2 and cleanse the rest of your body, mind and magic from foreign magics."

"If you would deign us to stand up we might go and cleanse your body, magic and soul."

As we were walking towards the door I asked. "How long was I out?"

"You were knocked out for 131 minutes." The Healer answered.

I was led into one of the other rooms I'd seen in the corridor earlier, it was the door on the right of the previous room we'd entered.

I saw a clean white room. In the middle of the room were carved what looked like two triangles within a Heptagon, There were twelve empty spaces within the shape. In said empty spaces I saw three white lilies, a clear transparent liquid with a silvery glow I thought might be phoenix tears, some Unicorn Hairs, A phoenix feather, and A white orchid. There were six other things I didn't recognize.

"What's going to happen is, you're going to strip and wear the white robe that will be provided. We're going to do the incantation. You're going to feel uncomfortable, maybe a little pain. Probably scream or moan a little. Then pass out."

"Can you give me a potion against the soreness from the last ritual?" I asked.

"No."

"Why not?"

"The ritual we're about to do would cleanse that potion immediately. If we gave it to you now, we'd not only be wasting a good potion, but you'd also spend more time lying there to cleanse that potion too."

"Oh, that makes sense."

"Of course it does. A Goblin said it." he smirked at me and I wasn't sure whether he was kidding.

I glared at him and asked where I could find the robes. I felt slightly embarrassed at stripping naked in my eleven-year-old form in a room full of Goblins.

When I lay down the goblins started chanting. I felt nothing until suddenly my head hurt, I felt like I had a migraine. Then all of the sudden it felt like a 10kg weight I never knew was there was removed from my brain. Then another few moments later I felt my blood heat up. It got quite painful and I screamed.

Although no one knew it at the time. A half-dozen trinkets that were monitoring Harry and the Privet Drive blood wards in the Hogwarts headmaster's office failed. Dumbledore would only find out about this when he returned from an ICW conference in Tokyo on August 17th.

The pain in my blood stopped when I felt what I thought might be my magic start burning. I screamed and screamed but nothing would stop it until all of a sudden the binds shattered and my magic left my body in a giant gust. The Goblins in the room were launched into the wall, and I passed out.

(-oI0Io-)

Hermione POV

Wednesday, July 31st 1991 12:59 PM, The Leaky Cauldron, Diagon Alley, London, UK

I had just eaten a wonderful lunch when I finally got to go to Flourish and Blotts. The moment we entered I squealed and ran away from my parents. Unknown to me my parents chuckled behind me.

I grabbed all my textbooks then used my puppy-dog eyes on my dad and was allowed to get a few more. I grabbed two books on pureblood etiquette and The Standard Book of Spells for grades 2-7. I grabbed my dad to go pay and when he protested a bit about the number of spellbooks I used my puppy-dog eyes again. I usually didn't like to manipulate my dad like that but books were sacred to me, more so as an eleven-year-old than an eighteen-year-old. But I was now again an eleven-year-old, besides they were books.

As we found my mom she looked in the bag. She smirked at my dad "Did she get you with the puppy-dog eyes?"

My dad blushed, coughed and looked away. "We still need to buy you a telescope."

As we approached Wiseacre's wizarding equipment my dad told me. "Why don't you go in already honey. Your mom and I need to discuss something."

I looked at him a little suspiciously, but in the end I decided I didn't care, and entered the store.

"I think we should get her a pet." Daniel Granger told his wife. "She's had trouble making friends in the past, and although I very much hope that won't happen again. I'd like her to have a companion."

Emma narrowed her eyes as she thought it over. "We'll allow her to have a cat. A toad or an owl wouldn't fit well in our house. It'd be very weird."

Daniel smiled "I hadn't even thought of that. I love that big brain of yours." and he kissed his wife. Then they entered the shop.

"Hi mum, dad. Can I get this one?" I asked as I showed a telescope.

"Of course sweetie. Let's go pay," my mum said and she took me to checkout.

My mum paid and she took me outside, back into the alley.

"Come honey, we have a surprise for you." my dad told me.

I was surprised as they took me to the magical menagerie. "I can get a pet?"

"You can have a cat. Any other pet would be too… magical. And that isn't allowed in the non-magical world."

Although later I would never admit it, I squealed and ran into the store.

"Did that just happen?" my dad looked at my mom.

"You mean, did our daughter just squeal and run towards something that isn't a bookstore?" my mom answered. "Yes, yes she did."

I ran into the store and looked around the pet store looking for crookshanks. He wasn't there. So I thought I'd try and sense my environment with my magic. Maybe I got a connection with one of the cats in the store. So I closed my eyes and felt around until I was drawn to the back of the cat section of the store where I saw a pitch-black ragdoll cat with bright piercing blue eyes. The moment I looked in his eyes I knew two things, I wanted him, and he was in fact a he.

I approached him slowly and carefully, as I did I realised he wasn't actually a cat. He was a kitten, a very cute kitten. I crouched towards him and looked him straight in the eyes as I slowly approached him with my hand. The kitten mewled and licked my hand, as he did I felt some kind of connection with him. I didn't realise at the time but what I felt was a familiar bond.

"Would you like to become my pet?" I asked him. And much to my surprise the cat nodded and jumped on my hand, before slowly walking up my arm and sitting on my shoulder. I looked at him, he looked at me. And then he softly pawed my nose. I smiled.

"Who's this adorable little guy?" my dad asked.

"I'm not sure, I haven't named him yet. Can I have him?" I asked, doing puppy-dog eyes at my dad. I didn't know it, but my new companion was doing the same thing. He caved within moments, and my mom did too.

We walked towards the checkout and I asked, "What do I need to buy for this little cutie? And how much does he cost?"

The man at the counter smiled. "This little one is G13. I'd recommend you sign up for the bi-weekly cat food delivery. You can tie it to a Gringotts vault so every other week the cost is withdrawn automatically and the cat food is delivered to you by owl. Or you can pay now for a year and then we'll deliver a shipment of cat food every other tuesday. It'll cost G52.

My dad looked at me, then back at the cashier. "We'll buy the cat, some toys, and food for the next two weeks. And we'll take a sign-up form."

We paid and left. Your mother and I have some things to discuss. We'll come back next week to take care of the food situation. Now start thinking about what you'll name him.

Wednesday, July 31st 1991 4:19 PM, Gringotts Infirmary, Diagon Alley, London, UK

I groaned as I saw a white ceiling and felt like I was having a déjà vu.

"Good afternoon mister Potter, how are you feeling?" A cheerful but deep voice asked.

"Lady Malfoy?" I grunted.

I heard a deep-bellied laugh next to me, it was so loud I nearly fell off the bed in surprise.

"Yes mister Potter, It's me, healer Sharptooth." He said and he handed me a potion. "Throat soothing potion." He explained at my questioning look. "Drink." He ordered.

"Why do I feel like someone decided to replace my ribcage with a xylophone?"

The Goblin coughed "Interesting comparison mister Potter. I have wonderful news for you. The soul shard is gone, the bindings on your magic are gone, the mental inhibitor is gone, the blood monitoring devices are gone and you are no longer powering the wards in Little Whinging, they will have collapsed by the end of next week. Your magic is luckily similar enough to your mother's that the protection managed to survive."

"So what does that mean now?" I questioned.

"I'm going to prescribe you a few potions to take that will correct the damage to your body over the next 30 days. And I'll be sending a comprehensive report of all your injuries as well as the blocks and inhibitors and their magical signatures to your Account Manager. And then we'll be sending you back to Account Manager Ragnok."
