INNER SANCTUM
A/N: patrickpopp you inspired the upcoming scene so thanks for your input and appreciation for the story :)
Just like a vice
I won't be nice
I won't be bad
I won't be good
But I'll make it right
I'll make it right
["The Vice" Medsound & Yota]
Abigail Baker looked for the Commissioner in his office but his desk was unoccupied.
He could be in the Inner Sanctum, she thought.
Sometimes the press conferences could take a lot out of a person. He liked to go there to think and gain his peace of mind back.
She knocked softly on the door to the Inner Sanctum, hoping that he wouldn't mind the interruption if it was her.
"Come in Abigail," she heard from the other side of the door.
Abigail smiled broadly as she entered the room, pushing the door behind her.
"How'd you know it was me, Sir?" she smiled shyly at him.
He was seated at his desk and he rose as she came in. Grinning back at her, he shrugged, "I just had a feeling."
"I uh, liked what you said up there at the press conference and uh, I thought you looked really good. Sexy up there," her cheeks warmed up as she said something out loud she had only thought in her head.
Really Abigail? she thought, wondering why sometimes her mouth worked before her brain did.
The Commissioner blinked in surprise. "Sexy, huh?" He pocketed his reading glasses in his breast pocket and walked over towards her.
She raised her gaze to meet his eyes. The room always seemed to warm to 110 degrees when it was just the two of them.
She felt the world around her slip away as emotions began to well up in her.
9 years together.
Working day in and day out.
Her best friend.
She told Commissioner Frank Reagan more things about herself than she ever would admit to any of her "outside of work" friends.
Her mind flashed back to the intimate dance they had shared at the gala dinner just shy of a week ago.
When something had bubbled up to the surface in her.
A burning secret that her lips ached to speak aloud.
How she REALLY felt about Frank Reagan.
His eyes searched hers. Knowing there was something behind them.
Frank Reagan saw the flicker of light there. He knew she wanted to speak to him about something. But the hesitancy and fear were there.
He put his hands on her shoulders, "Abigail, what is it?" he said softly. He knew better than to prod her. Abigail was direct and would speak her mind if he allowed her to.
Abigail was now wondering why in the world she had interrupted him in the Inner Sanctum. She thought she had wanted to be alone with him and now she just wanted to run.
But her heart yearned to be truthful.
She had to tell him.
She had to.
He moved his hand up to her face and trailed a finger alongside her cheek. Which he then moved under her chin causing her to now be looking directly into his searching eyes.
"Talk to me," he said huskily, his voice deepening with that commanding air to it.
Abigail melted.
Those blue-green ocean eyes staring her down. His finger under her chin. She had to obey that tone of authority.
She drew in a shaky breath, "I'm in love with you."
The statement hung out there for a moment and Abigail thought she was going to die from embarrassment if it went on any longer.
It took a moment for her to see the shift in the Commissioner's eyes.
As if he didn't know what hit him.
Abigail cringed inside. Her stupid big mouth sometimes.
Suddenly it washed over him and the change was apparent.
He dropped his hand in surprise.
He took a step back and Abigail thought, that's it. He's gonna run for the hills now. I've freaked him out.
He took another step back and ran a hand through his short cropped hair as if he was somewhat confused and contemplating everything.
Suddenly his expression changed and he moved towards her quickly.
Abigail's eyes widened in surprise and then his mouth was on hers.
Crushing his lips to hers, he drew her into his engulfing arms.
She felt so warm. So safe in his embrace.
He kissed her deeply. Drinking her in.
Her body conformed to his and they hungrily pawed at each other.
Suddenly she was up against the wall and he was pressed up against her.
Hearts racing, their fingers ran through hair.
Her arms reached around his neck and his hands moved down the edge of her slim figure, brushing against her breasts through her snug, sweater style dress.
She felt her head tip back and he nuzzled her neck making his way to the sensitive area below her ear.
His lips pulled away for the briefest moment, moving close to her left ear where he whispered, "I love you too."
Abigail felt her heart soar.
He had said it.
Her body oozed with desire for Commissioner Frank Reagan and she felt herself feeling dizzy in his arms.
The intensity of her desire took over and she found herself acting outside of mind and body as she pinned the Commissioner this time against the wall.
He mumbled something in surprise as she pushed him but happily let her take charge as their mouths kissed hungrily.
Suddenly the slightly ajar door to the Inner Sanctum was pushed open as first DCPI Garrett Moore burst into the room followed quickly by Lt. Sid Gormley.
"OH…MY…GOD…" Garrett's mouth dropped to the floor as he and Sid burst into the room getting a full view of Baker and the Commissioner making out against the wall.
Baker hurriedly pulled away from him as her face turned beet red from embarrassment.
She snuck a glance at Sid, who with a pleading look mouthed "I am SO SORRY" behind Garrett's back.
She looked at Frank who was calmly wiping his mouth as he stared down at the two intruders.
Garrett was looking back and forth between the two of them, mouth gaping, eyes wide open, and completely at a loss for words.
Sid was shaking his head wishing he had been able to keep Garrett away. He thought they were just going to be talking to the Commissioner, not getting a very clear picture of why he was in such a good mood lately.
Inside, Frank Reagan was sweating. Of all people to discover him and Abigail. He had a hard enough time staying out of the press as it was. And now his deputy commissioner of public information knew about their relationship.
He coughed nervously, "Um…" he began.
Abigail was flabbergasted herself, "Uh.."
Garrett was still looking like a giant Mack truck had hit him. He finally found his voice again and said to the Commissioner, "We NEED TO TALK."
If the situation wasn't so awkward it would have been funny.
But Frank Reagan knew Garrett was all business right now.
Frank nodded and with his eyes motioned to Sid and Abigail. They were happy to leave the room and hurriedly ran out.
A/N: I hope you enjoyed the extra chapters on this one. I wanted to keep the flow of events going so rather than break it up and give you a chapter at a time I took more time to write out more. Let me know your thoughts in the comments! How do you think Baker and the Commissioner move forward? Were you surprised by the exchange of "I love yous"? I felt that after 9 years of working together they would have a much more "sped up" relationship than people who hadn't known each other for so long.
