Hello, my Merlin fans, I am back! I know it has been forever.
I am sorry that I did not update. I have been very busy for the past couple of months. My teaching job starts again, studying for my exam, performing for the musical "Beauty and the Beast," and spending time with my family. Again, the next chapter will take some time because of life and my next update is my "Red Rose Nightmare" story. Please be patient with me.
Again, I want to thank my friend OtherCharacterNut for proofreading this chapter. Seriously, I do not know what I would do without your help. If you have not read her stories, I recommend you read them. They are truly amazing! Also, I want to thank everyone who helped/advised me with my writer block for this chapter. I really appreciate all the help.
Also, please check out my Twitter page, my YouTube channel, and my Polypore page to see posters and what clothes Brie is wearing in each chapter. Anyways, do not forget to favorite, follow, review, and enjoy this chapter.
Also Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
Also, I do not own anything except my OC Sam.
Sam's POV
Why does it feel like the only reason Edwin keeps making me run errand after errand for him is because he wants to see me every at every turn? Just the thought of being in the same room as him sends a scraping chill down my spine. I know he's the villain of the episode, but I also remember how he became one and yet I could only feel disgust in the pit of my stomach. I wish I could burst into the throne room and announce he's an evil wizard, but that wouldn't end well. Not for me anyway. Not without mortal, not magical, proof. I shook my head. I needed to stay the course or I might change the episode for the worst and the last thing I wanted was for Edwin to succeed in killing Uther and Gaius.
As I exited my room and looked up to see Gaius reading a book. His hair was a mess and dark circles shadowed under his eyes. I walked over to him and sweetly said, "Good morning, Gaius."
He slightly jumped, but sighed a relieved smile at the sight of me. "Oh Samantha, you startled me. I did not hear your bedroom door open."
I glanced over the contents of the table. Stacks upon stacks of papers and books, all to find the truth about Edwin. I bit my lip not knowing what to say about it and asked, "Gaius, did you not get any sleep last night?"
Gaius yawned and rubbed the exhaustion from his eyes. "I did not, but it was worth it." I nodded, worry darkening my own as I grabbed my satchel. "Where are you going?" Gaius asked.
I cringed before answering, "Edwin wants me to collect supplies for him at dawn."
Gaius smiled weakly before saying, "Well, you better get a move on then."
3rd POV
Gaius opened the door to Edwin's guest chambers to see the man sorting through his potions. The physician now knew Edwin's true identity and was ready to confront him. "Edwin. Your scar has healed well." Edwin turned to him curious as Gaius continued to speak. "I often wondered what happened to that poor young boy."
"I told you we've never met before."
Confident in exposing the lie, Gaius declared, "I didn't realize who you were until I checked the records." Edwin's smile drifted into a scowl when he realized the old man discovered the truth. "You used your mother's maiden name. You are Gregor and Jaden's son."
Edwin glared at the physician and replied, "They were friends of yours."
"They were sorcerers," Gaius shot back.
"They practiced magic. And so did a lot of people back then, Gaius."
Gaius narrowed his eyes and crossed his arms over his chest. "Uther will be furious when he finds out who you are."
Edwin closed his eyes and sighed, causing Gaius to think he had won the confrontation. But as soon as Edwin opened his eyes, and mouth, Gaius' smirk faded. "Fine. Fine. Shall we tell him? Let's go and tell him. Let's tell him. Let's tell him everything." He started to walk to the door, but stopped as though a new thought entered his head. "Ooh, I know... We could also tell him about Samantha."
Gaius's arms dropped from his chest as well as his heart. Edwin somehow knew that his brave, beautiful niece had magic. "Samantha?"
Edwin's scarred smile grew wider as he continued, "And we should tell Uther about Merlin too. You didn't know they were sorcerers? I knew Samantha was one, so of course her brother is one as well. Those two are quite a team, aren't they Gaius? I wonder what Uther will do. Probably have them both burnt."
Gaius looked shocked to see the evil burn through Edwin's face. He was willingly going to tell Uther that both Merlin and Sam had magic. "You would betray another sorcerer?" asked Gaius.
"You did," shouted Edwin. Gaius jumped back as Edwin accused, "When you turned a blind eye and let my parents die at the hands of Uther! At least Merlin doesn't have a son who will try to rescue him from the flames! Or Samantha burned without anyone to mourn her!"
"You're here to take revenge," stated Gaius as Edwin's true intentions dawned on him.
Edwin smirked wickedly as he hissed, "And I have waited a long time to seek my revenge on Uther."
"You think I will sacrifice the King to save Merlin and Samantha?"
"Think about it, Gaius. But if I find out that you have told one other person, including the boy and the girl, I will go straight to Uther."
Before Gaius could make another comment, the door opened. Samantha walked in holding the bag in her hands.
"Ok Edwin, here are your provisions." She looked up and was shocked to see Edwin glaring at her uncle. "Gaius…" Sam's eyes darted between the two gentlemen and she could feel the tension in the room. She remembered this was the part when Edwin threatened Gaius about revealing to Uther that Merlin had magic, but Gaius seemed even more terrified. Why was he more scared than in the episode? Sam narrowed her eyes and asked, "Is everything all right?"
Edwin smiled and took the satchel from her hands. "Oh, thank you, my dear Samantha. Gaius was just reminiscing about old times." He looked at Gaius and asked, "Weren't you, Gaius?"
Sam looked at Gaius, imploring him with her eyes to tell the truth. However, Gaius forced a smile and agreed with Edwin. Sam took a deep breath when Edwin touched her shoulder, rubbing it with his fingers. Gaius' scowled when he saw how uncomfortable his niece was at the touch.
"But now, I must get back to work," stated Edwin.
Sam gave him a weak smile before she and Gaius left the room and Edwin stared right after them.
Sam's POV
Gaius and I walked quietly together in the Central Corridor. I wanted to ask him if Edwin threatened to reveal Merlin's magic to Uther, but I kept the words trapped in my throat. It wasn't time. Not when just anyone could overhear as they turned into the hall.
I glanced at Gaius and said, "I suppose I should start work in the gardens before Edwin calls for me again."
He sent me a smile, sadness hiding behind it. "Yes, of course, you must."
"Do you want me to get you anything? I could make dinner for us tonight, so long as Edwin doesn't ask too much of me."
"No, I'm fine. Just do what Edwin asks."
I nodded my head and turned to leave, but the words clawed their way up my throat. "Gaius, can I tell you something?" He looked at me as I took a deep breath and finished, "I don't trust Edwin."
I drew in a breath when I saw Gaius' eyes widen at my statement. "What makes you say that, dear girl?"
I knew I couldn't say that he made Morgana sick or that I know he threatened Gaius or that he plans to kill Uther. Not without a way to prove it without telling the truth. "Well, let's just say that I have a feeling. There's this bad energy around him." I looked at my Uncle as we approached another hall where we would part ways and said, "Gaius, you can tell me anything, you know that right?"
Gaius smiled and replied, "Of course I do. I promise you, everything is fine."
3rd POV
Night had fallen over Camelot and Gaius was far from fine. He slowly walked into Merlin and Sam's chambers to see they were both sound asleep. Gaius sighed as he watched his niece and nephew, Merlin softly snoring and Sam pulling a blanket closer to her chest. He knew he needed help and there was only one he knew who can give him the answers.
Leaving his quarters, Gaius ventured through the sleeping castle...including the two guards that stood between the people and the dragon. He walked down the tunnel corridor and into the great cave, but there was so sign of the fire breathing beast.
"Hello? It is me, Gaius," he called out, the words echoing off the walls of the cave. He took a step back as Kilgharrah flew up and landed on the rock near the entrance. Gaius slightly smiled at his old friend.
"How old a man can become and yet change so little," said the dragon.
"You have not changed either."
Kilgharrah smiled as he answered back, "Twenty years, almost a lifetime to make the short journey back to where you began."
"I'm not here for myself."
The dragon's eyes glimmered as he spoke softly, "The children?"
Gaius gasped at the question and nearly dropped his torch. "You know about Merlin and Samantha?"
"You have struggled against their destiny, but you can no more prevent it than they can," the dragon said to the old physician.
Gaius sighed when he realized what the dragon was implying. "So, it is true then?"
"Oh yes. Merlin and the young Pendragon will one day unite the land of Albion. And Samantha will be their beating heart."
"But Merlin and Samantha are in danger."
"No. It is my jailer who stands in peril."
Gaius narrowed his eyes as Kilgharrah smiled at the thought. "Must Uther be sacrificed for the children?"
"Their time cannot come until his is past."
"But is that time now?" Gaius urged the dragon for a straight answer.
Kilgharrah chuckled deeply, his grin lighting up his scales and replied, "That is of your choosing."
Now Gaius was angry. He was threatened by Edwin, and now Kilgharrah was making him choose between his niece and nephew or the king of Camelot. "I will not choose between them. Uther is the king and the children are my family. You cannot make me choose."
The dragon lowered his head and hissed, "Then turn a blind eye. That is, after all, your talent."
Sam's POV
I was walking down the hall to start work in the gardens when Morgana rushed over to me. She didn't look strong enough to be on her own so I met her across the stone and asked, "Morgana, what's wrong? Do you need me to get Gaius for you?"
Morgana shook her head as tears slowly fell from her eyes. She grabbed my hand and said, "I just heard, Uther sacked Gaius."
My mouth dropped wide opened as the satchel I was carrying fell to the ground. Uther did what? No, he cannot fire Gaius! It's too soon! I stammered a thank you to Morgana, before I picked up the satchel and ran to the Physician's Chambers. I slammed opened the door to see Merlin was already talking to Gaius.
"Gaius! Uther cannot do this to you. You tried to save Morgana," he said to our uncle.
Gaius sighed before saying, "Uther's not to blame."
Merlin shook his head in disbelief. "I will speak to Edwin, you can work together."
Gaius immediately shut down that idea. "No, you mustn't do anything."
I walked over and said, "We can't stand by and do nothing. You did nothing wrong!"
Gaius smiled at me before saying, "Uther's right. It's time I stepped down."
Merlin looked to see Gaius placed a book in a wooden box that kind of resembles a medieval luggage.
"What are you doing?" he asked.
"I cannot stay when there's no longer a use for me."
I rushed over and pulled the book out of his bag. "You're not leaving."
Gaius sighed and said, "Sam-"
"No! You cannot leave! You are needed here in Camelot. Merlin and I need you."
"Samantha-"
"Edwin was the one who made Morgana sick. I know there was no bleeding in her brain!" I gasped when I realized what I had said.
Both Merlin and Gaius looked at me in shock.
"What do you mean he made her sick, Sam?" asked Merlin.
"I… What I mean…" I took a deep breath and answered, "Ever since those flowers were delivered to Morgana, I've been feeling bad energy. When Edwin shows up and said he had a cure and when he touched me… the dark energy grew."
Gaius nodded his head. "It is possible that your magic can detect good or dark magic. Your magic was able to figure out where the beast in the water. It is a good thing Edwin doesn't know about your magic."
I looked down at my hands and replied, "He… he does knows I have magic."
Both men looked at me in shock. I wanted to yell out I knew Edwin threatened Gaius, but I kept my jaw clenched.
Merlin grabbed my shoulder and asked, "What? How does he know?"
"It was an accident. That box he has in his chamber, there were life beetles inside. He has magic too! He told me not to tell anyone, but I was scared he would get Gaius fired. What if he tries to kill Uther or Arthur? I don't trust Edwin and I told you Gaius, you are the doctor for Camelot!"
"I am sorry Samantha, but Edwin is the physician for Camelot now, not me."
I narrowed my eyes and said in a strong voice, "If you are really leaving Camelot, then Merlin and I will go with you."
Merlin nodded his head and grabbed my hand. "Yes, we will go with you Gaius."
Gaius smiled at us and replied, "Merlin, you're like a son to me. Samantha, you are the a daughter I always hoped for. I never expected such a blessing so late in life."
Merlin looked like he was about to cry when he commented back, "And you are more than a father to us."
"Then, as a father, I must tell you, you both must remain here. Camelot is where you belong."
Merlin looked broken as he said, "But you belong here too, Uncle Gaius. You belong here with us."
"Not anymore." He grabbed Merlin by his shoulders and said, "Merlin, you must promise me you will take care of your sister and you both will not waste your gifts."
"Our gifts mean nothing without you to guide us."
Gaius smiled at Merlin. "You both have a great destiny. If I have had a small part to play in that, then I'm pleased."
I grasped Gaius' arm and said, "There is so much I have yet to learn. I need you to teach me. Merlin and I need our teacher."
"I'm afraid I am leaving here tonight, Samantha."
I shook my head and backed away slightly. "No, please don't leave us."
"I am so sorry Samantha, but there's nothing you can do or say that can persuade me otherwise."
I was heartbroken and angry. This was Edwin's fault. He almost killed Morgana and now he made Uther fire Gaius. I remembered Edwin will try to kill Uther next. I refuse to let anything get worse. "No, I won't let this happen."
I grabbed Merlin's hand and we ran out of the room. Before the door closed, I heard Gaius said sadly, "Goodbye Merlin and Samantha."
I told Merlin if he should continue to try to talk some sense into Gaius, while I searched for someone who might be able to help. I ran to the training grounds to find the one person I needed to talk to. I was relieved to see Arthur was practicing with his sword. I ran up to him and said in a determine voice, "Arthur we need to talk."
The Prince looked over his shoulder before continuing to hit the straw dummy with his blade. "Not now Sam, I need to be ready for the next tournament."
"It's about Gaius." Arthur paused his swinging as I continued to say, "I know your father fired him. It was one mistake."
"A mistake that nearly killed Morgana." I rolled my eyes and crossed my arms. It was Edwin who nearly killed Morgana, not Gaius. Before I could say anything, Arthur finished, "Besides, it wasn't the only one mistake."
I was confused and asked, "What are you talking about?"
Arthur sighed and looked at me with regret. "Edwin said his work was riddled with errors."
I was completely in shock. I should have remembered that's how Edwin convinced Uther that Gaius wasn't fit for the job anymore.
"Are you kidding me? What if Edwin was lying and framed Gaius? Arthur, you have to try something, anything to convince your father that Gaius should stay."
Arthur tossed the sword down and walked right up to me. He grabbed my shoulders for comfort and I could instantly feel a difference between Arthur's touch compared to Edwin's. I felt safer with Arthur.
"Look Sam, I am so sorry. No one wants Gaius to go, but my father's made his decision. There's nothing anyone can do. Not even I could help," he said softly.
I nodded my head and left the grounds. I could feel Arthur's eyes staring at my retreating figure before he grabbed his sword and started to beat the dummy harder than before.
That night, I walked back to the physician's chambers. I was sad to see that Gaius was gone. I walked into our bedroom and saw Merlin sitting on his bed. He looked up and I could see his eyes were red and there were tear stains on his cheeks.
"I tried to convince him, Sam. He wouldn't listen to reason. He… he left before he could say goodbye."
I felt a tear slide down my check before I walked over and gave my brother a hug. Gaius was like a father, especially to Merlin. After a moment of grieving, I decided to help Merlin carry blankets in for Arthur.
Before could walk to the prince's chambers, Arthur ran to us and screamed, "Merlin! Sam! My father has Morgana's illness! We must find Edwin!"
I gasped when I realized Uther was dying. It was time. Before Merlin even had time to process Arthur's words, I was half way to the guest chambers. I burst into Edwin's room with Merlin following behind and what we saw shocked us both. Edwin was standing near his table watching Gaius stand in the middle of a ring of fire. The flames were close to his body and the scorching heat licked his clothes. Edwin was going to burn Gaius to death.
"What the hell are you doing?" I screamed at Edwin.
I moved to help my Uncle, but Merlin grabbed my arm to prevent me from getting too close.
Gaius looked at us and called out, "He was trying to kill the king. I couldn't let him!"
Merlin looked at Edwin and realized the truth. "Sam was right. It was you who made Morgana sick!"
"I can rule the kingdom now. And with you at my side, Merlin, we can be all-powerful. I know you have magic just like your sister." My heart froze when his eyes looked right into mine. "You and I can rule, Samantha. We belong together and I will make you Queen of Camelot. Your magic will be even more powerful with my guidance. You and Merlin do not need Gaius. You need me, Samantha."
I glared at this monster, this horrible man. His dark magic had scared me since he arrived and now he wanted to kill both Uther and Gaius. He wanted Merlin and I to join him. He wanted to make me his. Oh hell no! This had to stop. I had to say what I've wanted to say for the past week when he came to our city. "Are you crazy? If you think I would choose you over my uncle, then you are insane!" He narrowed his eyes as I continued to say, "Merlin and I will never join you."
Merlin glared at Edwin and pointed to Gaius. "Release Gaius, right now! You let him go!"
"It's your loss, Merlin." He raised one of his hands as he continued to move the fire closer to Gaius. Edwin uttered a spell and an axe from the wall was thrown towards me. "If I cannot have you Samantha, then no one will!"
I gasped as the axe flew closer to me. Fear froze me in place. All I saw was the axe. I was going to be killed! Suddenly, Merlin jumped in front of me, his own hand raised and stopped the axe in mid air. Both Merlin and Edwin were using their magic to control its direction.
I trembled behind my brother as he screamed, "You will never hurt Gaius. AND YOU WILL NEVER HARM OR TOUCH MY SISTER EVER AGAIN!"
In the end, Merlin's magic overpowered Edwin's. The axe turned course and flew right into the evil sorcerer. I closed my eyes and turned away when I heard the body fall to the ground. I did not want to see where the axe hit him. They did not show it in the episode, and I do not want to see it now. I jumped when Merlin touched my arm.
"It's done, Sam. He won't bother you anymore," he whispered in my ear.
I looked at my brother and grabbed him into a crushing hug. That axe could have cut me through. I thanked Merlin and sighed with relief. It was over. Edwin was gone. Without looking at the dead body, I saw the fire around Gaius disappearing. I rushed over and hugged my uncle. He was all right and not burnt.
Merlin looked at us and asked Gaius, "Are you all right?"
As Gaius refused to let me go, he looked at the young wizard and said, "Yes. Thank you, Merlin."
I gasped and ran to Edwin's table to find a familiar wooden box.
"What are you looking for Sam?" asked Merlin as he and Gaius walked up to me.
"Arthur said Uther's illness is the same thing Morgana had. Edwin said he used these to cure Morgana. Maybe we can too," I explained as I finally found the box. I opened it and cringed as I saw the beetles. I really hate bugs.
Gaius looked at the frozen insects and said, "Elanthia beetles."
Merlin stared at the bugs and asked, "They're magical?"
"Yes. They can be enchanted to enter the brain, feed on it until they devour the person's very soul. We must go to him."
We rushed to Uther's Chambers to see he was laying in his bed. He looked like he was in a deep sleep. However, his face was pale and his breathing is shallow. I held the box as I stared at the King.
"How do we get the beetle out before it kills him?" Merlin asked.
Gaius looked at Merlin and said, "It can only be magic."
Merlin was in shock and grabbed my arm. "We can't use magic on Uther. He'd kill us."
"We don't have a choice. There are times when it is necessary. It is your right."
Merlin was so scared that his face turned white. "I don't know how."
Gaius narrowed his eyes and said, "If you don't, he's going to die."
I grabbed Merlin's hand and squeezed it. He looked right into my eyes as I whispered, "You got this Merlin."
Merlin shook his head and said, "You should do it Sam. You know the spell?"
"But I am not as strong as you are. You have to do it."
I handed the box to Merlin. He took a deep breath before walking to Uther's bed. He sat down, placed the box on the side table, and put both hands over Uther's ears. Merlin closed his eyes and concentrated. I gasped and closed my eyes when I felt a strong warm magic in the room.
Gaius looked at me and asked, "What's happening?"
My eyes snapped open and looked at Merlin. He pulled his hands back and stood up. I smiled when he opened his hand revealing the still bug.
"He did it. He saved Uther," I said.
Gaius grinned at us and asked, "Has anyone ever told you Merlin, you're a genius?"
Merlin smirked and replied, "You certainly haven't."
Merlin grabbed my hand and we left Gaius to handle the king. The next day was a glorious day, especially for Gaius. Everyone was in the Council Chambers and Gaius was standing in front of the royal court. I stood next to Merlin and was grinning so hard that my cheeks were on fire. I looked at Merlin to see he was so happy and proud of Gaius. In the corner of my eyes, Arthur looked at me with a smirk before looking back at Gaius.
Uther grinned as he said to Gaius, "I, my family, and my kingdom are deeply indebted to you. And in honour of this, I not only reinstate you as court physician, but henceforth, you are a free man of Camelot."
He handed Gaius a roll of parchment claiming he was back as the royal physician, but he was a free man. I couldn't contain myself as I jumped up and down with excitement. Everyone in the room clapped and cheered for Gaius. Even though Merlin not only saved Uther, Gaius and I, I knew I was glad that Gaius took the credit. Gaius is here to stay with us. I just hope the next episode will not be as bad and terrifying as this one was. I guess I will have to find out sooner than later.
And there you have it, another chapter done. Again, the next chapter will take some time so please have patience with me. The next update will be my "Red Rose Nightmare" story and then I will be back with "My Magical Wish." Do not forget to favorite, follow, review, and until then…
