He could pretend to move on when he thought she was happy with the cop but now he knew she was not. At least no longer. And if he did the right thing and talked to her after what happened, maybe they would not have spent the last two days in the academy hospital.

"I'm here Sam. Now and always," he promised her and then dropped his head into her neck, hugging her just like the last time they did, in that infirmary room after Janet's death.

After a couple of minutes, she lifted her head and looked into his eyes, understanding all the things he was not saying and nodded imperceptibly.

"I'll wait for you in the truck," she released him and started to walk away.

He held her eyes a few more seconds seemingly assessing whether she would be able to walk to the truck without falling over.

She steeled herself and looked back defiantly. She was a soldier and could very well walk the few steps from her house to the driveway without keeling over. He must have seen the shift in her since he simply nodded and went towards her bedroom.
