Five years ago...
Back on Berk, a nine-year-old Hiccup was sitting outside on the flower field near their home. He was curled up and saddened after the people that he once thought of as friends shunned him. He just sat down and just watched as the sun began to set and wiped some tears away.
"Hey." Elsa walked over and sat beside him. "What are you doing out here?"
"Just...nothing." Hiccup shrugged.
Elsa sighed and then got a good idea of how to cheer him up. "Hey, come with me."
"What?" Hiccup was worried about what she was planning.
"Come on." Elsa got up and raced into the forest as Hiccup quickly raced after her.
Elsa led the two of them into the forest until they came across a clearing. It was wide enough that Elsa could do her thing. Hiccup was wondering what they were doing out here and looked to see nothing for yards.
"What are we doing out here?" Hiccup asks her.
Elsa then smiled as she started to swirl her arms around, forming a small snowball in her hands. Hiccup suddenly became interested and walked closer to her and watched her.
"Watch this," Elsa said as she tossed the ball into the air, causing an explosion.
When the snowball exploded, snowflakes began to fall around the area. Hiccup reached out and was amazed at how warm the snow was, considering he's lived in Berk and had never felt snow this warm.
"What do you think?" Elsa asks him.
"This is..." Hiccup tried to find a word to describe it. "Incredible."
"It's not over yet," Elsa said as she raised a foot a little. "Watch this."
She then tapped her right foot to the ground, and ice started to spread across the forest floor. But Hiccup started to lose his balance and slipped as he landed on his back.
"You okay?" Elsa worried as she skated over.
"I'm good." Hiccup assured her as he held his hand for Elsa to help him up.
Then as time passed, Elsa created a few snowbanks for them to play in. After a while, Hiccup and Elsa got the idea of creating a snowman.
The familiar snowman that recently came to life, Olaf.
That was how most of their childhood went.
The two of them never had any friends because of who they were, but they always had one another.
And that was something that would never change.
Today...
Heather just starts waking up when Hiccup comes up to her. He kneeled over and started to shake her awake, causing her to stir.
"Huh?" Heather asked and noticed it was Hiccup
"Heather, wake up." Hiccup wakes her, causing Heather to fully wake. "Do you hear that?"
"Hear what?" Heather asks as she sits up, rubbing her eyes. "I don't hear anything."
"Exactly, it's gone, the sound is gone." Hiccup commented, wondering where it went.
"So are our dragons," Elsa tells them they looked to realize Windshear, Luna, and Toothless were gone.
Later, they're in the woods looking for their dragons, wondering where they could have gone. There weren't many places for the dragons to hide, no real caves or pits. The trees weren't steep enough that they could hide in them, so something had to have happened to them.
"Windshear!" Heather called out for her dragon.
"Toothless!" Hiccup did the same.
"Luna!" Elsa cried out.
Olaf was helping with the search, looking behind one of the small bushes. "Aha! Nope." He then waddled away, seeing they weren't there. "I was wrong."
"Nothing. I don't get it." Hiccup says as he, Olaf, and the girls came to a giant clearing. "Where would they go? Toothless can't fly without me, so he couldn't leave."
"Windshear or Luna could've carried him." Heather reminded him.
"Fair point." Hiccup shrugged.
"No, we would have noticed if they took off on the beach." Elsa debunked the thought. "No wing patterns on the beach, they didn't take off. They definitely walked off."
"Is it usual for your dragons to wander?" Heather wonders, knowing Windshear wouldn't leave her unless ordered.
"No." Hiccup stated, knowing how obedient their dragons are.
Then they started to notice bushes tussling and got ready for a fight. Heather drew her ax. Elsa rose her hands to blast. Hiccup just took out his pocket-knife.
As they were waiting for what was to come, it turned out to be Toothless. He jumps out of the bushes and ended up tackling Hiccup and he groans from pain before he laughs, happy to see his friend.
"There you are, bud. Where did you go?" Hiccup asks him and Toothless is circling around them while growling.
"Is Toothless okay?" Olaf wonders as he was confused why he's acting like this.
"I don't know, I've never seen him like this before." Hiccup told the snowman.
"I think he's trying to say something," Elsa says and Hiccup kneels in front of Toothless.
"What is it, bud? Is it Luna and Windshear?" Hiccup asks his dragon.
Instead of answering with a response, Toothless grabs Hiccup's prosthetic foot and runs off into the forest. He ran through the forest as fast as he could while dragging his foot.
"Uh...How long is it gonna take for him to notice?" Heather asks Elsa and looks to the ground.
Hiccup sits up and felt the back of his head. "Hard to say." He then looked down to see that Toothless only took his prosthetic leg. "He seemed pretty commented."
Toothless keeps going until he suddenly notices he has his leg and not his whole Rider. He gets annoyed at himself for not noticing this and runs back to them.
Toothless comes back and hands him his leg back. Hiccup saw his sorry expression and sighed as he rubbed his head.
"That's okay, bud. I like the enthusiasm." Hiccup tells Toothless and hops on his back. "You two stay here just in case they come back. I'll follow Toothless to see where they are from above."
"Got it," Elsa assured him.
Hiccup then took to the skies when they heard that noise was back. Hiccup wondered where it was coming from, noticing Toothless seemed to be following it.
But then when he looked down, he noticed that Thunderdrum was heading towards the girls and Olaf.
The Thunderdrum is a tidal class dragon that seems to resemble an Eagle Ray, whale shark, and basking shark all rolled into one creature. It schools like hammerheads and has no fire, but instead shoots a supersonic blast that is loud enough to kill a man at close range.
"Oh, Thor." Hiccup immediately became worried for them and tried to fly back to them. But to his surprise, Toothless was starting to fight back and head for the noise. "What? Hey, no, Toothless, that way."
Back on the ground, Olaf, Elsa, and Heather were still looking around for the dragons when they heard something heading tosses them, noticing the Thunderdrum.
Shrieking in terror, the three of them ducked for cover behind a few rocks. None of them wanted to injure the dragon, so their options were limited as to what they could do. The Thunderdrum let out an ear-piercing scream that caused the girls to cover their ears. Olaf on the other hand went flying into a tree due to the blast.
Toothless shot out a few plasma blasts to shoot the Thunderdrum and stop it from using its sonic blast. With the threat of a Night Fury, the Thunderdrum made its leave and took off.
"Let's hope that's the last we see of that guy." Hiccup commented, flying in to check on the girls and snowman.
"Anything else you wanna lead towards us?!" Elsa asked her brother, screaming due to the impact on her ears. "Changewing? Whispering Death, maybe?"
"Why are you yelling?" Hiccup asks her.
"I can barely hear myself!" Elsa proclaimed in slight anger. "Because that's what happens when you get attacked by a Thunderdrum!"
"Okay, I got it." Hiccup commented, understanding what she was saying. "I'm gonna go back out and find our dragons."
But none of them heard a word he said, all looking confused after he finished. Groaning, Hiccup saw their ears were still damaged.
"I said, I'm going back out there!" Hiccup cried to the top of his lungs so they could hear.
Elsa and Heather immediately denied that statement and stopped him. Olaf was more confused still, wondering if he even has ears.
"You are not leaving us alone!" Heather proclaimed.
"And we're defenseless against anything since mostly anything can sneak up behind us!" Elsa proclaimed.
"And we can only communicate by yelling!" Olaf proclaimed. "Which, even though it's quite fun, it's not exactly stealthy!"
"Okay, fine." Hiccup decided to stick together. "Fine, we'll all stick together."
And none of them heard what he said.
"Oh, my Thor." Hiccup sighed, getting sick of this. "I said we'll all go together!"
They were all thankful for that, already feeling safer.
They walked through the forest, allowing Toothless to lead the way. When they kept going further deep into the forest, they found the forest became a damper and even a small fog rolled in.
"This place has just got dark and creepy," Heather commented, starting to become on edge.
"Yeah, I agree," Hiccup says as they keep walking and see a pile of dragon bones.
"Are those...?" Elsa asks, not wanting to finish the thought.
"Weird white rocks?" Olaf took a guess, not sure what he was looking at.
"Dragon bones." Hiccup says and Toothless walks up to them.
While walking, Olaf finds an amber-like substance on the ground.
"What is this stuff?" Olaf asks Hiccup as he looked it over, never seen anything like it before.
"No idea. Never seen anything like it." Hiccup tells the snowman, looking at it and they hear the screech return.
Toothless reacts and starts running off and they follow him.
They go into a cave-like cavern and see thousands of dragons trapped in strong amber. They see Groncles, Zipplebacks, Nadders, and some Terrible Terrors and they're all trapped in the same amber.
"You guys know what's going on, right?" Olaf asks as he walked around, ominously as he was feeling the amber.
Hiccup starts getting an idea of what's happening. "It looks like something is trapping these dragons in this amber rock-like substance and..."
"Eating them." Elsa finishes her brother's thought.
"Oh," Olaf commented, becoming more cheerful. "I am glad someone knows what's happening. I have absolutely no idea."
They then hear a shriek and run to hide as a dragon they've never seen before comes in. This dragon has a long, slender body. Its wings resemble those of a Thunderdrum. It has a tail that is very reminiscent of that of a Monstrous Nightmare while its body resembles that of a Timberjack, as it is very thin. It has striking, bright colors of blue, yellow, and orange on both its wings and tail and is adorned with spikes that run along its back. It also has small arms and longer hind legs.
They wait and hide as the dragon takes one of the Terrible Terrors in amber and leaves.
"Toothless, no!" Hiccup shouts as Toothless seemed to be hypnotized. After some time, the call finally ceased and stopped calling Toothless. "It's the song. It's what's drawing these dragons in."
"If it's drawing in these dragons, it must've done the same to Luna and Windshear." Heather began to get worried for their dragons.
"We have to find her and get out of here." Hiccup tells them and they start looking until they find them.
"Windshear!" Heather cried as she looked around.
"Luna!" Elsa called out.
"Hey, Heather!" Olaf called out to her. "I don't know if this is important, but I found Windshear!"
"Windshear!" Heather shouts and runs to her dragon as she hugged her friend.
Elsa just found Luna and ran towards her when the new dragon comes back and Toothless charged at it. Toothless blasts at it and misses the Deathsong as it shoots its amber spit and traps Heather against Windshear.
"No!" Hiccup shouts and runs towards them.
"Hiccup, it's coming for you!" Elsa shouts as Hiccup sees it was indeed coming for him.
Elsa worked fast and blasts ice at the amber coming at her brother, missing the amber that spat at her and ended up trapping her.
"Elsa!" Hiccup shouts to his sister when he sees the dragon come for a second attempt.
Olaf shrieked, causing the dragon to focus on him and chase Olaf as Hiccup escaped through a crack in the wall of the mountain. He makes it through and slips down a steep hill and screams on his way down. As he lands on the hard floor, he sees the Thunderdrum from earlier is there.
"Oh, hi. Remember me?" Hiccup asks and stands up, noticing the rage-full look on the dragon. "Okay, so, I was thinking...w May have gotten off on the wrong foot."
Hiccup starts with but the Thunderdrum shrieks at him, and he ended up dodging it by ducking behind a rock formation.
"Note for the new take on the Book of Dragons, Thunderdrums hold grudges." Hiccup tells himself as the Thunderdrum charges at him and moves Hiccup out of the way as amber comes between them.
The two species looked to the sky and noticed that the dragon was back. The and the Thunderdrum then begin to fight, and the new dragon flew at high speed to tackle him.
"Don't worry. I got your back." Hiccup promises.
Hiccup then worked fast as he grabbed some rocks and tossed them at the dragon, making sure the dragon was distracted. The Thunderdrum then managed to fight him off, followed by sending a sound wave to send it skidding.
"Okay, you might not like what I'm about to do, but trust me, it's gonna work out for both of us," Hiccup says as he jumps on top of the Thunderdrum and it takes off into the air in surprise.
"Haven't we been over this?!" Hiccup yells.
Thunderdrum just starts spinning around, causing Hiccup to get light-headed.
"I said I'm trying to help the both of us. Don't you listen?!" Hiccup asks the dragon and remembers something. "Of course, you don't listen, you're a Thunderdrum, and Thunderdrums are hard of hearing."
The Thunderdrum goes and dives into the ground and Hiccup falls off its back. He then gets up and feels for any injuries and feels nothing is broken.
"At least we lost the Deathsong." Hiccup says, naming the dragon as he couldn't keep referring to it as "the dragon".
But then the situation he was in weighed down on him. His sister, his girlfriend (sort of), and his childhood snowman were trapped.
"Oh, I can't believe this is happening. They put their lives in my hands, and now they're cocooned in that rock stuff, I'm being chased by an angry Deathsong, and I'm stuck here with a Thunderdrum who can't hear a thing I'm saying!" Hiccup yells, regretting leaving Berk to cause all of this to happen.
Then he started to punish himself when he realizes something.
"Wait a second. If you can hardly hear a thing, then you probably can't hear the Deathsong's call." Hiccup tells the Thunderdrum who still can't hear him. "And if you can't hear the Deathsong, then it can't lure you in. No wonder you haven't been caught and you're all alone!"
He then starts holding his hand out as he did with Toothless when he earned his trust.
"You know what, Mr. Thunderdrum? You're gonna help me get my friend back. And I'm gonna make sure that dragon never bothers you again." Hiccup says and waits to see what the Thunderdrum thinks and gains the Thunderdrum's trust.
Back in the cave, Elsa was struggling to get out of her cocoon by using her powers. Grunting, she could barely feel her fingers move, so she didn't even know if her powers were having an effect. Toothless cooed in concern for Toothless.
"Don't worry. Hiccup will be back." Heather tells the dragon.
"Whatever this stuff is, it's really strong," Elsa commented.
"How do we get out of it?" Olaf wonders when he gets thrown a few feet and they see Hiccup and a Thunderdrum.
"Okay, so ramming the cocoon won't work," Hiccup says on top of the dragon.
"Please tell me you have a plan B?" Heather asks him.
"Well, cutting, ramming, or ripping most likely won't do anything, our plans are limited," Elsa tells her brother before he could get any ideas.
"She's right. Once this stuff cools down, it's just rock solid." Heather comments getting annoyed.
"Wait a minute...cooled down," Hiccup was starting to get an idea.
He goes over to a Monstrous Nightmare and starts using its flammable gel and rubs it over all of the cocoons.
"This can't be your best plan," Heather tells him as Hiccup places some of the gel on her cocoon.
"It's the only plan I have left. The only other option is a dragon's dinner." Hiccup tells her as he hears the Deathsong. "Uh oh." He says and hides as it comes back and takes a Gronckle. "This does not look good."
"Just hurry!" Heather states as Hiccup starts pouring more of the gel across her cocoon.
"Don't worry. There are tons of more appetizing dragons around. You won't look as appetizing." Elsa tells Heather to calm her down. "Besides, it'll take him a while to eat-"
The Deathsong then immediately came back, already finishing off the dragon, and came for a second helping.
"Or I don't know a lot about this dragon," Elsa states and sees Hiccup run for cover
The Deathsong flies down to Toothless and Heather and gets ready to take them away.
"And it's going for the two for the price of one meal," Heather said in worry and closed his eyes.
"Hey!" Elsa cried, trying to get the dragon's attention off of them. "Over here! Get away from her!"
The Deathsong then came over to Elsa as Hiccup flies down on the Thunderdrum.
"Hey, remember us?" Hiccup asks as the Deathsong chases after them.
In the skies, it tries shooting them down and Hiccup does a quick flip and dives back down and uses his prosthetic leg to spike a flame to light up the gel and drops. The spare lights the gel and it starts breaking the cocoons on them all and they're free.
"Yes! It worked!" Heather shouts as Toothless gets free and shakes the amber off him.
Windshear comes over and licks Heather happy they're okay. Toothless runs over to Hiccup and licks him over and over. Luna flew over and got back together with Elsa.
"Hey, bud, good to see you." He says and feels the saliva still on his face.
"Okay, let's get the heck out of here." Heather proclaimed.
"I am on board with this plan!" Olaf said as he jumped on Luna.
Hiccup hears a cry and sees a baby Thunderdrum that can't fly because he's in amber. Then he noticed that he couldn't leave these dragons to die because of this one. Looking around the cave, he got an idea when the Deathsong came back.
"Heather, let's get these dragons out of here. Elsa, help us take this guy down." Hiccup took off into the air and Elsa decided to go with it.
Hiccup has Toothless fly around the island looking where to put him and finds a closely closed cave.
"Okay, Mr. Deathsong, welcome to your new home." Hiccup yells to him as they fly into the cave and the Deathsong follows and Toothless lets out a roar.
"Wait, what are you doing?" Hiccup asks as Toothless starts navigating in the dark. "Okay, I can't see, but you clearly can."
Hiccup trusts Toothless to get them out as the Deathsong crashes into the wall. Thanks to the darkness, the dragon won't be able to find its way out easily as they escaped out of the opening they came from. They leave the cave just as Elsa blasts the opening with ice and closes it, then Toothless blasts it with rocks from above and blocks the opening completely.
"Thanks, bud. No one's gonna hear his song in there." Hiccup tells him as Heather flies by with a baby Thunderdrum at hand.
The baby and parent reunited, and Heather moves over to Hiccup. "Looks like he wasn't gonna leave without him.
"He was just a parent looking out for his kid," Elsa said with a smile, remembering what Stoick did to save their lives.
"If I were you, I'd find someplace to live." Hiccup tells the Thunderdrum family. "I don't know how long that's gonna hold." He states.
"Aren't Thunderdrums hard of hearing?" Olaf asks him.
"Yes! I know. Let's get ourselves out of here." Hiccup states as they fly away, Heather and Elsa laughing as they flew off into the sunset.
They still needed to find their own home that was safe for them and the dragons. They had a long way to go, but they were more than willing to look as far as they needed to find the perfect home.
