A few days after the incident, Hiccup leads the group up the mountain of a nearby island of the Edge. But he also ended up doing it early in the morning, despite the complaints of everyone. They were walking up a cliff with Hiccup being the only one who was actually awake. The sun only just began to rise when they finally reached the top of it.
"Okay, Hiccup, you dragged us all the way up here," Astrid tells him with a yawn.
"Now...What is it you have to show us? It better involve food or destruction. Or a combination of the two." Tuffnut warns him.
"I bet you're all wondering why I brought you here today." Hiccup says as he's digging through Toothless' saddle. "The answer is to show you my latest invention." He then pulled out a strange glider of sorts. "Presenting the Dragonfly One."
He gets nothing but stares from the rest of the group except Heather who smacks her face. Even some of the dragons weren't entirely sure what to make of what they were seeing. Tuffnut just raises his chicken who clucked and looked around without a care.
"The chicken is not amused," Tuffnut says as the chicken continues to cluck before running away.
"I didn't think you'd actually make that thing," Heather said to Hiccup.
"Yeah, I've been working on it in my spare time." Hiccup admits to her.
"What is it?" Snotlout asks in confusion.
"It's a flight suit." Hiccup dumbs it down for him. "Don't all applaud at once."
"Hiccup, I don't need to remind you that we already have flying dragons." Fishlegs reminded him. "Why would we ever need a flight suit?"
"Well, what if we were to get separated from our dragons mid-flight? It's certainly happened to me a few times." Hiccup reminded them.
"Like that time you jumped off Toothless and tackled me off Echo." Anna brought that up.
"Well...With this, we can fly solo until we can catch up with them." Hiccup explains while placing the glider on his back.
"When this doesn't work, and it clearly will not, can I have Toothless?" Snotlout asks him.
"Oh for Thor's sake." Hiccup moans and even Toothless growls at him as Hiccup walks up to the edge of the cliff.
Elsa then became worried as she wasn't quite sure about this. "What do you plan on doing here?"
"Jumping. Unless someone has a better idea." Hiccup tells her.
"This should be fun," Dak says as he wanted to see how this one turns out.
Astrid groaned as she smacked herself. "Ugh, boys."
"Relax, would ya? Feel that updraft? That's why I chose this place." Hiccup explains his plan. "It'll pick up my wings and I'll be floating on a bed of air." He promises and when he activates the wings one side of them gets stuck. "Heh..."
"Or crashing on a bed of rock," Snotlout says as Hiccup is trying to fix it and he groans at him.
"Okay, everyone. Dragonfly one, maiden flight." Hiccup says before leaping and he begins to take flight.
For about three seconds. Just as he started to slightly glide, he immediately began falling and everyone started to panic. Toothless quickly reacted as he leaps after him to save him. He couldn't fly however so he basically needed to glide himself to get down toward the falling Rider.
"I don't know about you guys, but I was under the impression that a flight suit was supposed to fly." Tuffnut comments as he watched them fall.
"Yeah, that looks more like a plummet suit," Ruffnut says as they hear Toothless save Hiccup, and the two crash into the water.
Toothless and Hiccup made their way back up to the top of the cliff whilst Toothless was drying himself off from his rescue attempt. Hiccup made a few tweaks to his Dragonfly and was ready to go at it again, despite their objections.
"Okay, so I made a few tweaks. Now behold some serious flying." Hiccup says before leaping once more and is able to stay in the air for a second before once again plummeting. "Ahh!"
Toothless then once again leaps after his rider to save him. Everyone ran to the edge and watched him fall and panicked as they wondered what would happen.
Ruffnut chuckled at the action. "Do it again."
But Hiccup keeps on trying.
"Now...This time, I absolutely know where I went wrong. You see...It's all in the timing. I judged the updraft wrong. I assure you, I definitely have it now." Hiccup promises as Toothless looks at his rider, getting sick of rescuing him. "Don't worry, bud. I've got this under control."
Hiccup waits a minute for the updraft before leaping this time. He then was sent plummeting once again to the ground, but this time nobody was attempting to save him. Elsa watched and was getting ready to make a quick pile of snow to catch him. But to her surprise, before he could hit the ground, his suit begins to glide across the ground.
"I'm flying? I'm flying!" Hiccup acknowledges and cheers at his achievement.
"I cannot believe that hunk of junk actually worked." Snotlout comments.
Hiccup then tries steering but there is once again a problem.
"Okay, I'm gonna have to work on the steering a bit." Hiccup now realizes he still had a few other tweaks to work out. "Toothless!"
Toothless came in and worked fast before he could make it over and rescue his rider at the last second. He managed to rescue his rider
"Thanks for the save, bud." Hiccup tells his dragon as they get out of the water.
Toothless then spits water out at his rider for being so stupid.
"Again." Hiccup sighed as Toothless laughed. "It looks like our flight tests are probably done for the day." He says as he sees his wings are broken when Heather and the others approach them.
"Okay, you're done with this," Heather informs Hiccup in anger.
"Right. For now." Hiccup agrees as they decided to head back up to the Edge for the night.
Hiccup packed up the Dragonfly One and knew he needed to go over before he could go for a second attempt. They also knew they needed to get back before sundown as they noticed the sun was starting to set. That would be when the more dangerous dragons come out to start hunting and they didn't want to start getting in their path.
When they made it back to Dragons Edge, they made it just as the sun was finally starting to set. But when they did, they immediately noticed clouds of smoke were coming out from the forest.
"Uh, did something happen while we were gone?" Dak asks in surprise.
"Looks like a fire started just recently." Hiccup took notice and knew they needed to act fast. "We gotta put it out before it hits the food supply or the rest of the forest."
"H2, on it!" Summer cured as she quickly flew ahead.
"Should have seen that coming." Anna sighed and quickly flew to keep up.
Hiccup and the others went around to pick up any water buckets they could to help keep the fire from spreading. Summer was the first to arrive and immediately started to squirt water at the (literal) line that was made. Burple was also helping by shooting out rocks to put out the fire. Meanwhile, Toothless, Winger, and Luna have led around to the sheep in the area and were keeping them from running away. Echo also helped by using her screech power to keep the fire away from the other trees in the area.
"Well, looks like that's taken care of." Hiccup was glad to see that the fires were put out easily. "Let's head back for the night."
"Great. After everything you put us through, we need the relaxing sleep." Heather stated as they then flew off and made it home.
They just happened to miss that there was a figure that was in the woods. It watched as the group flew off and made its way out to the far side of the island.
The next day, the entire Edge was still asleep in the early morning before a few of them started to be woken up. It wasn't exactly a good feeling that woke any of them up however when they woke up to the smell of smoke. Hiccup and Elsa were the first two to react as they ran outside and found the forest on fire again.
"What?" Hiccup asked in surprise. "How is this possible?"
"Didn't we put those out last night?" Elsa asks in shock.
"Seems the fires are spreading again," Anna said in surprise as she woke up. "I'll get the others."
"Great," Elsa stated as she whistled for Luna. "We'll get a head start."
Hiccup then ran for Toothless as Elsa flew off towards the fires. When they reached the fire, she was shocked when she saw that the fires were almost in the identical location as before. They even saw the sheep in a mass panic once again until they started to put out the fire.
"How could this fire have started again?" Elsa asks as she shot another blast of ice to cool it down.
Luckily it didn't take long for reinforcements to arrive and give a helping hand to the two. Echo was once again keeping the fire from spreading from the open area that they were in with Anna.
Leyla and Summer were looking from above to try and figure out what was going on. "What do you think, Summer? Could it be some strange natural causes? Lightning strikes?"
"No, these streaks of fire are too straight." Summer stated as they noticed the lines of fire.
"Which means someone's purposefully doing this." Leyla was putting it together. "Then lighting them again when we put them out."
"This means they could be nearby." Summer says as they looked around.
"But you notice how they lead to the same place?" Leyla asks.
That gave the two of them an idea as they flew around the others, putting out the last of the fires. They made a line straight towards the bushes where the lines all met up. Whilst the others were finishing the fire, Summer squirts the bushes and pushed a figure out of them. But to their surprise, it was actually a small dragon that seems to be causing the fires.
This small dragon has a larger head size compared to its body size. Her spiraling horns are smaller and not quite as twisted. The coloration is a base color of red or orange and a bright white belly.
"It's a dragon?" Hiccup was surprised it was a dragon causing trouble.
"Aw, it's kinda cute," Fishlegs admitted in a squeaky voice.
Then to their surprise, they watched as the little dragon started to grow mad and sizzle the water it was hit with. This was followed by it glowing and revealing to be fire related. Then they watched as the small dragon started to restart the fires they just put out.
"Hey, you!" Burple cried as he flew in. "Quit that!"
Burple then spat out some boulders to try and stop her, but it ended with the dragon only using the boulders to climb upward and over Burple. "Gonna have to try better than that!" That confirmed the dragon was a female dragon, and it was definitely young, considering the voice.
The dragon then got right back into lighting the fires when Winger and Echo cornered her. "Hey, cut that out!"
"I can't!" She tells them.
"You can, and you will," Dak informed her.
That seemed to surprise the dragon as she's never met anyone who could understand her. "Wait. Did you just understand me?"
"I sure did," Dak confirmed.
The dragon then landed as she was interested in this. "You all speak dragon?"
"No, just the three of us," Leyla said from behind her.
"What? How?" She asks them.
"Long story. We were shipwrecked as kids." Dak went into their backstory again.
"Rescued by Anna and a mother dragon who raised us and taught us stuff." Leyla recapped. "They taught us some cool stuff, how to talk dragon, fly a dragon."
"Distracting dragons long enough for Burple to..." Anna looked up with a grin.
Burple then fell from the sky and landed on top of the new dragon, immediately crushing them not enough to hurt, but to keep them still. Everyone then landed and saw that they had their culprit and wondered why she was doing this.
"Wow, you're a Firefury." Leyla recognized the dragon as she ran over and took out her diary. "You're the first one I've ever seen this close."
"I've really gotta take a look at that book one day." Hiccup commented, wondering what else they had on that book they'd never heard of.
The Firefury kept trying to escape Burple by sneaking out, but it was to no avail. "Quit wiggling around, little Buddy. I don't wanna squish you."
"You you calling little?!" That seemed to anger her as the Fire fury was starting to literally burn in anger.
Burple didn't seem to even realize what was happening as he just sat there and took it. "Either something I ate isn't agreeing with me or..." he then ended up leaping off into the air to get away from her. "Youch!"
They watched as Burple took flight for a bit before he crashed next to them and was still burning. But he didn't suffer for long as Summer quickly cooled down his stomach.
"Ah, thanks, Summer." Burple sighed in relief.
Just then, the Firefury was just trying to escape the group when Windshear shot out her quills to keep her still. "Don't even think of going anywhere."
"Okay, okay!" She cuts it out and didn't try to leave again.
"We're not trying to hurt you," Anna assured the Firefury.
"Then why are you blasting me and chasing me and sitting on me?" The Firefury asks them.
"To stop those fires you keep setting that scare the sheep," Winger explains.
"Scaring the sheep?" The Firefury asked in shock. "I wasn't scaring the sheep. I was scaring the wolves."
"Wolves?" Dak asks in surprise. "They usually stick to the south side of the island."
"Yeah, learned that the hard way," Tuffnut stated as he recalled his recent encounter with wolves.
"Well, doesn't seem like that anymore," Firefury stated.
"So, you were setting fires to keep the sheep away from the wolves?" Anna was putting it together.
"Oh, well, when you say it like that, it makes us sound like the bad ones," Ruffnut commented.
And just as they were discussing it, they saw a pack of wolves growling and making their way out of the woods. They seemed to be eyeing the sheep and were then stopped when the group of dragons snarled at them. The wolves weren't scared of one measly dragon, but the adults were a different story.
Toothless and Luna sent plasma blasts that cause a few of the wolves to run off, but a few seemed to try and sneak around. They were then fighting off to keep them away from the sheep.
"Yeah, you better run!" Snotlout cried in victory. "That's for biting me!"
"Thanks for letting us know about this..." Anna looked to the Firefury, waiting for a name.
"Aggro. My name is Aggro." The Firefury introduced herself. "As she said, I'm a Firefury. We're a little hotheaded."
"And hot-winged, hot-tailed..." Cutter started to list off the rest of her.
"How'd you end up here?" Anna was curious to know.
"My flick was migrating and I got lost in a storm," Aggro explains to them how she ended up on the Edge. "I've been here for the past few nights."
"Sorry, we didn't understand what you were doing with those fires," Anna tells her.
"I had to help the sheep. They're the only friends I have." Aggro said when she had a sheep come up to her.
"Not anymore," Leyla promises as she gestured to everyone else.
"Thanks, you guys," Aggro said.
"Hey, what do you guys say we move these sheep before they come back with reinforcements?" Hiccup asks of them.
"Gladly." Aggro agreed, not sure if the guy understood her or not.
They then spent the next hour moving the sheep to a different location, keeping what they actually do with the sheep on the down low. Seems the younger members weren't aware of what happens to the sheep and they definitely weren't going to tell them. They then made it back to the Edge where Aggro got a look at the area.
"Wow, is this where you guys live?" Aggro asks as she looks around.
"Yeah, we just recently moved in here ourselves," Winger admitted as they showed her around.
"That's the feeding area." Summer gestured to where all of the dragons eat.
"That's the training area." Cutter gestured towards the training area around the clubhouse.
"And that's the stables where we sleep." Burple gestured over to the stables where they were near. "It's really comfortable."
"Wait! You sleep indoors?" Aggro asked in shock.
"Yeah, you should try it," Anna said with a smile as she approached, the others going off to start the strange new day. "For as long as you like."
"Wait, really?" Aggro was surprised by what she was hearing.
"Yeah, I just talked it over with the others, and they'd be willing to accept you into our group." Anna offered to her.
"Yeah, without you, who knows what could have happened to them," Leyla said as they walked off to show Aggro around.
Snotlout chuckled and walked over behind Anna. "I'm so gonna tell them."
Anna however stopped him as she elbowed him in the stomach, causing him to wince and fall over. "Don't you dare."
