As the younger Animorphs – with the notable exception of Tobias – all started immediately demanding to know just what it was that Ax was doing, but Tommy had seen the look on Jake's face. He'd seemed angry, though why in the world he would be angry at Ax of all people was still something that Tommy found himself wondering about.
(Prince Jake has been taken, he is a Controller,) Ax said, into the stunned, almost echoing silence, his deadly sharp tail blade still resting at Jake's throat.
"What do you mean?" he asked, the furious expression that Jake had turned on Ax still firmly at the forefront of his mind.
(His head was in the Yeerk pool long enough for a Yeerk to enter,) Ax said. (And just now… You all saw his expression when he was surprised to see me. I am not human; I do not know every human expression. So tell me, what was that look?)
Jake tried to protest his innocence again, but this time no one was willing to take him at face value. Cassie was the one who figured out a way to make sure that Jake wasn't a Controller; and then, after the Yeerk had been driven to reveal himself, Tobias figured out a place that they would be able to hold him. As they all started moving, Tommy found himself wishing that he, personally, could have done more to help.
But, it was like Marco had said: he had his own life to live, and none of them could afford to have suspicion falling on them if it looked like they were all hanging around each other too much.
