Chapter 2
When: December 8, 2027
Where: The Logan Huntzburger Estate in the Hamptons
Logan was awake. He was laying in bed watching his wife sleep. He thought about going for a run on the beach but decided against it. He would rather watch his wife sleep. Today 20 years ago, he woke up early. He was so nervous. He couldn't figure out how someone as smart, beautiful, and accomplished could love a trouble-making, butt-faced miscreant, trust fund brat, like him. Not only did she love him, but he had also somehow convinced her to marry him, despite their parents. Never thought the parent they would have the most trouble with would be Lorelai.
Rory and her mother Lorelai, have grown up together. Lorelai was only 16 when she had Rory. 17 when she left her plush life in Hartford, with a tiny baby. It had been just the two of them until Rory got accepted to Chilton Preparatory School. Because Lorelai borrowed money from her parents to pay Rory's tuition, Rory's grandparents, Richard and Emily Gilmore became a part of their lives. This also was the start of Rory straddling the two worlds.
The fight between Lorelai and Rory could be traced back to her entering Chilton. That is when Rory began to tip-toe in the world of Hartford high society. The fights started small. All teenage girls fight with their mothers. Not Rory and Lorelai. They had disagreements, but only a few fights until she started Chilton. It started with Emily wanting to buy Rory a couple of uniforms so she wouldn't have to wash hers so often. Lorelai said no. Then Rory wanted the same kind of socks the other girls were wearing. Lorelai told her the socks she had were fine. This type of disagreement continued. Emily did buy her more uniforms and the proper socks, as well as the bookbag, Lorelai just didn't know, until Rory's senior year when she found out Rory was driving one of Richard's old cars to school. She would take the bus to her grandparents and drive Richard's car to school. Emily and Richard, along with Rory, wanted her to fit in.
Things continued to be rocky with Lorelai and Rory when Lorelai found out she applied for Yale. Rory tried to tell her she was required by Chilton to send in several applications. Rory got into all of them: Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Stanford and Brown.
The night Rory told her grandparents she had decided to go to Yale, Lorelai left Friday night dinner without dessert. Although Lorelai and Rory made up, Lorelai still canceled their backpacking trip to Europe. Rory spent most of the summer working for Richard in his office and goofing off with her friends. She split her time between her grandparents' pool house and Stars Hollow.
By the time Rory was ready for Yale, Lorelai agreed to go shopping with her to buy school clothes. Rory didn't have the heart to tell her Emily had already taken her shopping. Rory had lots of clothes to start College in.
Rory took a semester off from Yale her Junior year to reevaluate her career choices. This was the first time Logan realized that Lorelai had not grown up. She managed to raise a child, she claims to have raised by herself, to be an independent, strong female, without growing up herself. Logan realized it was Lorelai's way or she refused to participate. Just like a child that takes her game and goes home because she is losing.
Most single moms have to worry about paying rent, feeding the child as well as herself. Hiring a babysitter so she can work. Lorelai did not have to worry about any of that in the beginning. Rory was 11 when they moved out of the potting shed at the Independence Inn. Up until that point in Rory's life, she was fed and had a roof over her head by Mia, Sookie, and other townsfolk, Rory has never said so, but Logan fully believes when Lorelai turned 25 she was given her trust fund. This would have been a couple of years before she bought the house.
Rory was starting to stir. Logan started running his fingers through her hair. "How long have you been lying here staring at me? And Why?" Rory asked with a smile on her face.
Logan looks at his phone to see the time. "It's been about 45 minutes and because you are the most beautiful creature that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing."
Rory opened her eyes and looked at her gorgeous husband. She reached up and kissed him. Then got out of bed to go take a shower. Logan was right behind her. Today is their anniversary. He planned to start his day off right.
Logan and Rory made it downstairs before noon. Sandra fixed them some fruit and eggs, along with fresh-squeezed orange juice. "Do you have plans for today? Logan asked.
Rory told him, "No" with a smile. They have been married for 20 years. Rory knew not to plan anything on their anniversary. Logan liked to think he is spontaneous, and he is, but he is also a planner. Rory was brought out of her thoughts to answer a question Logan asked. "Sure that sounds good," Rory said. "Let me go change, " she said, looking him over. "I'm changing into a pair of yoga pants and sweatshirt. You get the bikes ready," she said as she started up the stairs.
"I read about this new trail. If you want, Sandra can fix us a picnic lunch." He told her.
She stopped on the stairs. "Don't forget to pack a blanket," she said with a wink, before heading up the stairs.
Logan and Rory were on a deserted part of the beach enjoying a picnic lunch. They already explored two new trails, now they are enjoying quiet time eating and watching the waves roll in. They found a nice clearing behind the sea wall that allowed them not to be blown away. Logan had his head in her lap as she leaned back against the wall. She was running her fingers through his hair. They were both thinking this was the claim before the storm. Today was Wednesday. The family would start arriving Friday morning. Rory says this every year and on holidays, she is so glad that Mitchum and Shira have their own house in the Hamptons.
When the children were little, they had nannies, along with Christopher, Gigi, Richard, and Emily. If she had to entertain Mitchum and Shira in the earlier years, Logan would have had to institutionalize her.
She was smiling. Remembering the fun times. The children were small and liked spending time with them. Richie is 18. To him, his parents are the dumbest people around. They know nothing about the world today. Hayden turned 16 this past summer. He doesn't mind spending time with his parents. Well, that is until Christopher bought him a car. Rory begged him not to buy him a sports car. Chris's reply was "Mitchum and I had an agreement. He bought Richie's first car and I bought Hayden's. I can't let Mitchum outdo me." That is what he told Rory. He bought him a 2027 Mazda MX-5 Miata convertible. He let him pick it out. It is Royal blue. Rory was thankful it wasn't a $200,000 car. Rory told Logan, "At least it doesn't have a back seat."
Logan smirked, "Do you really think that will stop him? Rory, I have been buying him and Richie condoms since they were 14."
Rory was smiling. "What are you smiling about Ace?" Logan asked.
"You are laying in my lap, with your eyes closed and you can tell I am smiling?" She asked.
Logan said. "Yep, Ace, I know you better than anyone, I could feel the shift in your mood." He said laughing.
"Well, I was just thinking about Richie and Hayden. Remember when dad bought Hayden his car? I commented that at least it didn't have a back seat. You told me that you have been supplying them condoms since they were 14 years old." Rory asked.
"Yeah, I remember," Logan said remembering.
"Don't mean to burst your bubble, but you know Katie is 14?" She asked. She knew this would get him going.
"Yeah, what has that got to do with anything?" He asked, sitting up. "I know you are not telling me that I need to start supplying condoms for my innocent, sweet princess. I will not. I will kill anyone that tries to corrupt my sweet girl." Logan said. Sitting all the way up now.
"Logan, what age girls did you think the boys were using the condoms on?" Rory asked. She was trying her best not to laugh. She liked getting his feathers ruffled.
Logan stood up, started packing away the picnic. "I'm ready to go back to the house. We need to start getting ready for supper." Logan said. When they got everything packed away, they got on their bike and rode back to the house. Logan put the bikes away in the garage, while Rory took the picnic stuff to Sandra.
Rory asked Logan after they got out of the second shower for the day, "What have you got planned?"
Logan smirked. "That will spoil the surprise." He said.
"Can you at least tell me what I should wear?" she asked.
Logan walked into the closet. He came out with a pair of black leggings with red and green jingle bells on the hem of the legs and a green tunic sweater with red holly on the sleeves. "I think this will be perfect. No wait," he disappeared back in the closet only to return with a pair of Santa Claus socks and ballet flats. "Now, you have a complete outfit. How did I not miss being a fashion designer." Logan asked, laughing.
"Oh, I know. Colin and Finn would never let me live it down." Logan said laughing so hard he had to sit down on the bench at the end of the bed.
"Logan, are we staying in tonight? Because this is not evening wear for the Hamptons." She told him.
"Okay, I will give you one hint. We are staying in tonight," he said walking over to her and kissed her on the lips. "Do you know how much I love you?" He asked.
"I would say almost as much as I love you." She told him with her lip on his.
Logan and Rory took their time getting dressed. Logan gave her another hint. Supper was being catered and Sandra was taking care of it.
