Chapter 11
When: Monday, December 27, 2027
Where: The Logan Huntzburger Estate in the Hamptons
Monday morning was quite at the Logan Huntzburger Estate in the Hamptons. It was 10:00 and Rory was still asleep. Logan had been up for a little while, but he was sitting in 'Rory's Reading Chair'. He was reading, but mostly he was watching his wife of 20 years sleep. He can remember a time that they both would be up. It didn't matter how many nannies, maids, or cooks they hired, Rory always insisted on being up with the children. This is just one of the many things that he admires about his wife. He still, after 20 years, has a hard time believing that she was his.
When they first got married and moved to California. His mother did everything she could to get between them, but Rory handled it like a pro. She just showed Shira that she was capable of taking care of Logan and his business and still have a career. After a while, Shira just gave up. She and Rory will never be best friends, but when they started having children, Shira stopped worrying about if Rory was good enough. She was her grandchildrens' mother. When they found out about Honor and Josh not being able to have children, she realized that Rory and Logan's children would be her only grandchildren.
Now Lorelai on the other hand didn't come to visit, didn't call, Rory would call her mom once a week. Lorelai would tell Rory about the happening in Stars Hollow. She would change the subject if Rory started talking about California or Logan. After a while, Rory just accepted it. Richard and Emily visited often. Rory and Logan stayed with Emily and Richard when they visited the east coast.
On one such visit, Christmas of 2008. Emily hosted the family's Christmas, mostly the same group that spends Christmas together in the Hamptons now. Emily and Richard were still trying to mend the relationship between Rory and Lorelai. Emily planned a shopping trip for the three of them. Rory asked Honor to join them. They went to New York for the day. They planned on shopping all day. Because Rory and Logan didn't want to lug presents bought in California back to the east coast, The only shopping Rory had done was online. She had everything shipped to Emily and Richard's house. Rory needed to find Emily a present. She was sure she knew what she wanted to get her. Emily had hinted several times about it. She and Honor told them that they needed to do some shopping on their own. Rory was in search of the newest, black and white leather Coach purse. She was telling Honor about it and Lorelai overheard. Lorelai pitched a fit. The Rory she knew would not spend that kind of money on a present for anyone. She and Rory got into a shouting match in the middle of the Coach store on 5th avenue.
After that, it was several years before Lorelai would attend Christmas functions that Rory and Logan were attending. When Rory returned to Hartford, she was embarrassed. She was afraid the scene would be in all the papers, "New Huntzburger bride fights with mother in the middle of Coach store." She was crying when Logan got back to the pool house.
That was about 5 years before they found out that Lorelai was bipolar. The only reason they found out about the diagnosis is that Emily slipped up. She was talking to Rory on the phone, she told her to hold on Lorelai was on the other line. Emily went to swap lines and hit the wrong button. "Did you get your medicine changed? Did the doctor prescribe you something stronger?" Emily asked.
"Grandma, it's me, what medicine is momma taking? Is there something wrong with her? Grandma, you have to tell me." Rory pleaded. Her mother was her mother. No snide remark would change that. Emily apologized and told Rory that she would call her back. Emily hung up the phone.
It took two days and a lot of crying for Emily to finally tell Rory that Lorelai was diagnosed as bipolar and as long as she is on her meds, she is fine, but she goes off of them sometimes. Emily begged Rory not to say anything to her mother or anyone else. Rory told her she would keep quiet, but she would tell Logan. Logan and Rory have discussed this several times but never mentioned it to anyone else.
Logan was brought out of his thoughts when he heard the shower running. He got up to join Rory in the shower. He loves his wife.
