Author's Note: After two small chapters and one missed week, we finally got a real chapter this time. And this is the final chapter of Spider-Man and MJ 2: Fade to Black. Thank you for being patient with me and coming this far. I hope you enjoy the ending.

Maybe Spider-Man was wrong. Maybe Green Goblin wasn't too practically minded for revenge. Green Goblin had scoffed at the idea of pursuing revenge before, but he could have been lying about how petty he could be. Sending a clone of Spider-Man's dead previous girlfriend to attack him certainly felt like revenge. Then again, it still could have been a tactical decision. How could Spider-Man bring himself to fight back against her?

"As you can see, I've made a few improvements." By that, he meant, unlike the original Gwen, this one has super-powers. "Before you think about trying to set her free, you should know that my handy device attached to her head will explode if you try to remove it," Green Goblin explained. "And in order to even get to her, you'll have to muscle your way through the noise." Green Goblin pressed the button on his glove again, reactivating the noise maker that agonized the symbiote and its wearer.

"I feel like I'm forgetting something," Green Goblin said, stroking his chin. "Oh, right, the hobgoblins!"

The two hobgoblins crashed through the windows on each side on their gliders, each armed with noise makers.

Danger summoned his courage and ran toward Green Goblin in hopes of turning the noise makers off. But he was quickly rammed into by one of the hobgoblins.

Green Goblin pointed at Spider-Man and told the other hobgoblin to "Hold him down." The hobgoblin hovered toward Spider-Man, no fear for his task.

Spider-Man was crippled by the agony, he was outnumbered, he was emotionally distraught by the sight of Gwen's clone and his only present ally wasn't ready for any of this. It was time for Spider-Man to say his prayers. He didn't have much time, so he made it a quick prayer. "Please let this work."

The symbiote slithered off most of Spider-Man's body, converging on his fist. No longer held down by the symbiote's shared agony, Spider-Man punched the unprepared hobgoblin, splattering the symbiote all over him. With that, the hobgoblin was the one to be crippled by the noise. Sure Spider-Man had left himself only wearing his boxers, but everyone there knew his name anyway.

Acting quick, Green Goblin shot a goblin-bolt at him. Spider-Man crouched under the shot and plunged his fist through the table, hitting the glider that was hiding beneath him. His fist smashed through its metal, destroying the noisemaker. The glider was built to function even with that damage, but it was still progress. The hobgoblin covered by the symbiote screamed and pressed the button to turn his glider's noise maker off. He then reached down and ripped the noise maker off his glider, desperate to not let it turn back on. Meanwhile, Danger clamped his hands onto the other hobgoblin's glider and overcharged it with electricity until it exploded. With that, all the noise makers were destroyed.

Spider-Man grabbed the hobgoblin that had the symbiote and it slithered back onto him. With the black suit reconstituted and no noise to bother him, Spider-Man struck the hobgoblin's head. Green Goblin shot at him again and Spider-Man used the hobgoblin's shoulder as a shield. With a few more hits to the head, ribs and glider, the hobgoblin was done. Green Goblin's glider flew out from under the table and Green Goblin hopped onto it. He flew out the window and started shooting goblin-bolts from the outside of the building.

Spider-Man used symbiote tendrils to shield himself from the bolts.

Seeing that this wasn't working, Green Goblin switched to throwing pumpkin bombs. Spider-Man web-grabbed one of the pumpkin bombs and threw it back at Green Goblin who was knocked off his glider by the blast.

Green Goblin's glider chased after him, about to save him from hitting the ground. Spider-Man had only bought a handful of seconds.

Danger was struggling against the remaining hobgoblin and the clone.

The hobgoblin ran toward Danger with his fist cocked. Spider-Man web-pulled the hobgoblin's fist, leaving him unprepared for Danger to grab him and electrocute him.

The clone tried to rush Danger, but Spider-Man wed-zipped to her and struck her in the head. "You replaced me!" the clone said, sounding heartbroken.

Spider-Man froze at those words in that voice.

"And now you're hurting me!" the clone added.

Spider-Man stayed quiet. He didn't know what to say. He didn't know if he needed to explain himself to the clone of the dead girlfriend that he was in his rights to replace. He knew she was under Green Goblin's commands, but he didn't know what she would say if she wasn't.

Trying to take advantage of his stunned state, the clone ran at him and swung her talons. Snapping out of it just in time, Spider-Man flipped backward, avoiding the talons. With perfect timing, Danger shot a bolt of lightning over Spider-Man mid-flip, hitting the clone. Apparently, he was already done with the hobgoblin.

Green Goblin came back into view outside the windows.

"Go get Goblin! I've got an idea for the girl!" Danger said.

Spider-Man was dubious of letting the new guy handle a monster himself, but he wanted to get away from the clone too badly to resist the suggestion. "You're sure?"

"I'm sure! Go!" Danger insisted.

"Alright! Once you're done with her, stay put! I don't want you or her near Green Goblin!" Spider-Man launched himself out the window, leaving Danger alone with the clone.

"Okay, Gwen, was it?" he asked nervously.

"Shut up!" Gwen hissed.

Gwen came at him and spun around, her feet like that of a ballerina, her talons like the propeller of a helicopter. Danger backed away, just barely in time to avoid being slashed. Danger turned invisible, hoping to sneak up on her. But she wouldn't be a sitting duck.

Gwen ran around the room, swinging her talons wildly as she went. She jumped onto the ceiling and bounced off it several times, trying to fill every cubic foot of the room with her swinging.

Unable to be invisible and shoot lightning at the same time, Danger became visible again. He shot at her, but his aim couldn't keep up. She charged at him with incredible speed. Danger had to focus hard to get the timing right. When she got to him, Danger knocked her wrists away, deflecting her talon swings. She still tackled him and they landed with her on top of him. Danger reached up and grabbed the device attached to her head.

Green Goblin had warned them that the device would explode if they tried to remove it. Thankfully, he had a better idea. Danger used his electrical powers to drain the device. The more power he took from it, the more Gwen's savage countenance faded. When the power was completely gone, she had no more desire to fight.

Gwen got off of Danger, careful not to make any jolting movements to provoke him.

Gwen sat next to him and wrapped her arms around her curled legs as her talons shrank into fingers. "Thank you," she whimpered.

"Are you okay?" Danger asked.

Why bother with lying? "No," she said weakly.

Danger had been bemoaning Spider-Man's orders for him to stay away from Green Goblin. But now it gave him an excuse to stay with Gwen to comfort her. Danger put his hand on Gwen's back as the tears started welling in her eyes.

Spider-Man swung around the building, dodging goblin-bolts and pumpkin bombs. Green Goblin flew towards him and this time, Spider-Man didn't dodge. Spider-Man caught Green Goblin's fist and stuck onto his glider.

Green Goblin pulled his other fist back, but before he could hit him, the symbiote let out an explosion of tendrils, knocking Green Goblin off his glider.

As he fell, Green Goblin pressed a button, trying to get the glider to catch him, but Spider-Man wrapped tendrils around the glider and tore it apart.

Without a glider, Green Goblin fell the rest of the way to the concrete outside the building's main entrance. However, the drop wasn't enough to break his robotic body. He picked himself back up with only minor pain.

Spider-Man tried to land on him, but Green Goblin caught his ankles and cast him to a distance where he landed on his feet.

Green Goblin said, "Now that I'm out of advantages, I'd like to see you take off that symbiote and fight me like a man."

"It would be more manly to make sure you won't hurt anyone else."

Green Goblin laughed. "Is this it then? Will one of us die here and now? Is this the final day of the war between Spider-Man and the Green Goblin?"

Spider-Man nodded. "Yep. This is it."

"Are you sure that symbiote isn't controlling you anymore?"

"I'm not doing this for the symbiote. I'm doing this for my girlfriend."

"Which one? The dead one or the soon-to-be-dead one?" Green Goblin asked with a smirk. Green Goblin assembled his pitchfork and it glowed with heat.

Green Goblin thrust his pitchfork at Spider-Man moved his head just far enough to the side. Green Goblin swung the pitchfork around twice, Spider-Man ducking under it the first time and jumping over it the second time. And, still in midair from the jump, Spider-Man kicked Green Goblin in the head. Green Goblin swung his pitchfork again, at a middle height this time, and Spider-Man backed away. The space between them was too far for the pitchfork, but Spider-Man still stretched out a tendril that struck him in the head.

Green Goblin shot goblin-bolts at him, using his left glove; doing so meant that he was only holding the pitchfork with one hand. Spider-Man rushed him, avoiding each goblin-bolt and grabbed Green Goblin's right wrist with both hands. Spider-Man used his leg to push Green Goblin's left hand away so it wouldn't blast him while he gripped the right wrist. Spider-Man squeezed as hard as his finger could manage, crushing Green Goblin's right wrist, rendering it inoperable. And so Green Goblin's right hand no longer moved. Its fingers were still wrapped around the pitchfork. Spider-Man didn't want to hold the pitchfork because of the heat, but he managed to knock it out of the dead hand with a brief backhanded hit. Spider-Man flung Green Goblin around and threw him away from the pitchfork.

Green Goblin's right fingers wouldn't move, but it was still a piece of metal he could hit Spider-Man with. He hammered his right arm downward at Spider-Man who blocked the attack. That turned out to be a distraction when Green Goblin's left hand shot goblin-bolts into Spider-Man's torso at point blank range. He shot Spider-Man twice more, bringing him down further with each shot. Then Spider-Man sprang back up, smashing his head into Green Goblin's. Spider-Man pulled his head down into a collision with his knee. He hit Green Goblin's head so hard he spun around and Spider-Man caught his left arm mid-spin. With his other fist, Spider-Man punched near his elbow, breaking the arm.

Spider-Man hit him with a series of blows to the head. It was as if Green Goblin forgot how to defend himself. Spider-Man uppercut him, knocking him off his feet and he crash landed on his back. Spider-Man thought about how he was about to kill him, wondering if he would regret it or if he would even care later. But then, Green Goblin stopped him with three words.

"I give up."

Spider-Man stopped and stared at him, constantly expecting a trick, but none came. Green Goblin smiled at him and the nanites retreated from his head, revealing his natural face. "You thought you would kill in self-defense with the right excuse. But you're too much of a golden boy to murder someone who's already surrendered.

Spider-Man couldn't bring himself to contradict him. He looked all over Green Goblin, hoping he would extend a blade from what was left of his limbs or something, anything to give him the self defense excuse, but Green Goblin stayed still. "Even if you wanted to break your morals, someone out there is watching us and you can't let the authorities see you killing a man who's defenseless. I might not be able to beat you this time, but if you kill me, at least I'll get the last laugh." He did laugh. He laughed loud and long, still laying down. It made Spider-Man want to crush his skull between his hands, but as much as he hated to admit it to himself, Green Goblin was right. He couldn't kill someone who already surrendered.

He didn't have to.

A bullet came whizzing in and pierced Green Goblin's skull. Spider-Man looked in the direction the bullet came from and eventually saw the shooter.

It was the Developer. Apparently, all these explosions had been enough to get her attention. She was grateful to Spider-Man for helping her uncover the truth before, and yet she was frustrated with his unwillingness to kill Green Goblin. Spider-Man and the Developer stared at each other, not necessarily united, but absolutely understanding. Within a few more seconds, the Developer disappeared.

Spider-Man turned his gaze back to Green Goblin. His dead face was still smiling, making it even harder for Spider-Man to wish this ended differently. For Green Goblin to die was for the best and he knew it; not for the sake of revenge, but because he would have been back.

This time, with the bullet in his brain, he wouldn't be back. The nanites may have given his head some level of shielding before, but he had removed them for his gloating. He had previously survived decapitation with his brain intact, but now those brains were mulched. He was really dead. It was over.

Well, the fighting was over anyway. A task harder than fighting awaited him up in the conference room.

Spider-Man made his way back up and reentered through the window. Sure enough, Gwen and Danger were still there. He could see that Danger's plan worked judging by Gwen's passive state.

"What's up?" Danger asked.

"It's over," Spider-Man said. "Green Goblin is done."

Spider-Man and Gwen kept switching between looking at each other and looking off to the side, a clash between uncontrollable staring and the pain of looking at each other.

"So, about you wearing the symbiote this whole time," Danger said finally.

Spider-Man felt like that was the smaller issue, but it was a legitimate thing to bring up. "Yeah, uh, long-story-short, the symbiote used to make me a jerk, but it isn't anymore."

Danger barely understood and lacked context, but he didn't presume to know better than Spider-Man about the symbiote and figured that answers to more questions would just make him more confused. Spider-Man's story matched what he'd been seeing, so he said, "Uh, cool," with a thumbs up and left it at that.

Gwen cleared her throat, trying to think of how to word things. "I, um . . . Green Goblin showed me some footage. I know about you and . . . her."

Spider-Man shifted uncomfortably. "Gwen, you were-"

"I know. I- the real Gwen died. You didn't do anything wrong. And I'm not trying to get you back if that's what you're worried about. You seem happy with her and I wouldn't want you to date me out of pity."

Spider-Man was relieved that he wouldn't have to tell her he loved MJ more than Gwen. He just nodded and she could see his relief.

"Now that that part is out of the way, I'm sorry," Spider-Man said. "I'm sorry I didn't save you."

It was emotionally confusing for the clone to hear that apology. If the real Gwen never died, the clone never would have existed. And yet the clone wished the real Gwen never died. "I forgive you," she said half-heartedly. She mostly said it in hopes of getting out of this conversation. "You should go. The police will want to know what happened."

Spider-Man took the hint, wanting to get away from this as much as she did. He jumped out the window, leaving her alone with Danger again.

With Spider-Man gone, Gwen felt like she could let go and finally cry.

"Hey, look at it this way," Danger said, nervously trying to cheer her up. "At least you'll be able to tell your friends you used to date Spider-Man."

"What friends? It's not just him; everyone in my . . . in the real Gwen's life moved on," Gwen sobbed. She calmed her voice a little and said, "No one's going to want me back. No one wants to be haunted by a ghost."

"I would," Danger said, prompting Gwen to turn her head in his direction. "I lost my uncle a little while ago. Not sure if he went to the good place or the bad place. But if I could see him again, I wouldn't mind if he was pale-blue, passing through the walls and telling me I'd be visited by three other ghosts before Christmas."

A small tsk of laughter managed to make it through her misery.

"Do you have family out there?"

Gwen nodded. "My dad."

"Is he a good dad?"

"Yeah; a bit stubborn, but yeah."

"Hey, that's something," Danger said optimistically. "I mean, take this with a grain of salt because I don't exactly have life figured out either, but between your powers and your dad, I think you've got a solid starting point."

Gwen cracked a small smile at him in spite of herself. "Thanks."

The police got a good look at Green Goblin's body and it was clearly Norman. Spider-Man told the press that Harry was innocent and Norman had framed him. While he was at it, he advised the public not to blame the employees of Oscorp for Green Goblin's actions.

After a quick phone call, MJ and May knew it was safe to go back to the apartment. The first thing MJ did was run to Peter and embrace him in a tight hug. May was more hesitant. "The news said someone else shot him. Would you have killed him if they hadn't?" May asked.

Peter took a moment and then said, "I don't know."

"Are you going to keep the symbiote?"

"I don't know."

So many things he didn't know. Would he reveal his identity for the sake of business ventures? Would he be friends with Gwen again? Would he kill the next time someone threatened the people close to him?

"We'll figure it out together, okay?" MJ said.

Peter nodded and thought about how much help MJ had already been. She wasn't there during the final battle and yet he couldn't have done any of it without her. If it wasn't for MJ, he'd still have his warped personality and be working for Green Goblin and wouldn't have even tried to stop him. MJ was the one to talk him into helping Danger who turned out to be instrumental in the final battle. She talked him into keeping the symbiote that gave him the power he needed to beat Green Goblin. She talked him into helping the Developer who delivered the killing blow so he wouldn't have to.

Spider-Man knew he would be alright as long as he had MJ.

The End.

Author's Note: It's finished! I finally resolved the cliffhanger that began over a year ago. Thank you so much for reading.

You probably noticed that this story includes Miles and Gwen without them being spider-people and without using alternate dimensions. In this story, Miles, as Danger, has the powers Spider-Man doesn't have (electricity and invisibility) while he doesn't have Spider-Man's other powers (except strength, durability and agility). Also, if you're wondering why his name is "Danger," it's based on the song "What's Up, Danger?" from Into the Spider-Verse. As for the lack of alternate dimensions, I figured that with all the other multiverse-superhero movies and tv shows happening these days, it might have been tiring for me to write yet another multiverse story. So, Spider-Man and MJ: Never Break and Fade to Black take place in a world that has Peter, Miles and Gwen all in the same dimension.

Now that this story is over, you might be wondering what's next. I'm thinking that for the time being, I am going to take a break from fanfiction writing. In fact, for now, I don't even want to start planning the next one. Lately, I've been trying to pull myself in too many different directions without coordinating myself very well. So I'm temporarily removing one of those directions. But keep on following me. While I'm not promising anything, I might one day write Spider-Man and MJ 3.
