Chapter: 5 Orientation Day
[Time: late Afternoon]
[Location: Fort- Academia Magus dormitory.]

Returning to my apartment in the dorms from my shopping trip I was only a little bit exhausted thanks to my daily dose of hellish training under Gurther for the past 5 years. During my trip in the arcane market, I decided to simply let the twins accompany me. It got a little bit too embarrassing having two girls my age following me through the arcane market. At this point I probably have gained some kind of strange reputation. The sun is already setting, and the golden orange hue once again illuminated the world. The two twins Nilzyl and Iyzlin were following behind me like the NPCs back in Nazarick. When I reached the entrance to my apartment complex, there was a black-haired maid of Jironian descent awaiting my arrival. Her black hair was styled into a straight bob-cut down to her collarbone, her coal-black eyes only betrayed a mild boredom. She gave a polite bow and presented me with a wax-sealed letter.
"Heir of Ovirick, as a member of one of the seven noble-houses. My mistress, Lucia Ctilitc heiress to the house of enchantments would like to invite you to a private get-together amongst this years next generation of nobles." The maid informed. Nilzyl stepped forward and took the letter from the maid and proceeded to inspect it of any hidden traps. After a few seconds had passed, she placed the letter in her own vest pocket. The maid then bowed and left for one of the other dorms. Iyzlin never took her eyes from the maid the whole time. After the maid was out of sight, we entered our apartment and sat down in the living room. Nilzyl is the first to speak. "Ainzack, the letter is clean. There are no magic signatures or poison on this letter." While mentioning "magic signatures" she gestured with a thumbs down. This is a sign that we are currently being listened in. This immediately set me on full alert. I cast {Mana flow detection}, an alternate version of {pulse location} and immediately noticed several slips of paper with different sorts of {scrying enchantments} attached upon them hidden in different places in our apartment. 'She thinks she can spy on me?' I thought to myself, anger slowly boiling like a pot of slow cooking soup. I then cast an {illumination} on every slip of paper in my apartment. "Dispose of them." I gave an order to my bodyguards for the first time, and not a second later Nilzyl and Iyzlin started to systematically dispose of the varies scrying-tag hidden throughout the room. While the twins were busy, I picked up the letter with the scrying spell inwoven into it. From the looks of it the heiress of Ctilitc had done a good job hiding the enchantment on the inside of the envelope. From the looks of it, it probably seems that she is listening in on us at this very moment, good to pass on my reply to her invitation. "Miss Ctilitc, I know you can hear me. I find the sincerity in your "invitation" rather lacking, allow me to refuse." With my peace said I destroyed the letter with a small {fire catcher} spell leaving only a pile of ashes.
Taking a deep breath, I think I really need to get started by installing my countermeasures against scrying and the countermeasures against her countermeasures.

Not even less than an hour. It took the heir of Ovirick not even five minutes to find all my hidden talismans. The rumors seem to not do the paranoia of the duke house of Vetdrich justice. This is not good, not good at all. Ovirick could simply report this to the principal and once word got out, the royal family would have more reasons to undermine my family's position as a Duke house. The plan was originally to gather intel on the other houses and use the information to gage their personalities and assemble my inner circle of allies through any means necessary. With this one action from this Ovirick, my plans can be considered as good as ruined. Biting down on the tip of my teaspoon I started to brainstorm of possible ways to salvage this situation.
At every one time the kingdom of kaenrild will always have three duke houses. If house Ctilitc falls into the position of a court, then either house Alain of the Arcane or house Flos of druid wisdom will take up the mantal. After that, house Ctilitc will have next to no chance to reinstate itself back to the position of a duke for the next century.
The worst part is that it will very likely happen during my time as head of the house. Looking over to my maid who I ordered to send the letter lowering her head in shame, I couldn't help but sigh. "It's not your fault Saraka. It's a miscalculation on my part." Now I needed to find a way to salvage the situation before Ainzack Ovirick makes a move against me. Standing up from my couch I walked up to my table and took out another piece of parchment. For starters, it would be necessary to make sure Ainzack keeps quiet about the scrying-talisman. The best scenario will be if he also attends the gathering, I orchestrated. I only met with Ainzack in person at one of those yearly spring-time banquets three years ago. At the time, we didn't talk much about anything. Leaving with not much impression behind. Had I been more foresighted back then, this kind of thing would have never happened. Yet like the saying goes, 'Can't take back the arrow once it flies from the bow'.
But before I could start to write another letter to Ainzack, a few more of my talismans were destroyed. This time it is from house Alain the house of the arcane. I really wanted to bang my head against the table at this instance and curse at the world for my misfortunes. Calming myself halfway down I could only ask myself what went wrong.

One day before Orientation Day. In the last two days I've been working on my counterintelligence setup and the countermeasure against any threats that will be able to overcome the first five layers of my defenses. This would do for the time being. In every corner of the room, there is a staff with a dreamcatcher-like contraption on the top and several feathers with runes written on each feather sticking out from the sides of the staff. These are defenses against both contracted spirits and external divination-spells. Second is the strings I hang on the upper corners of the walls. These strings have all sorts of gadgets hanging on them ranging from wooden carvings to enchanted jewelries and charms. All these gadgets together are a set of semi-automatic countering mechanisms against any attempt at spying whether it is screening spell, spirit familiars or any other types of intelligent gathering methods, my current set up can counter most of them. One needed to be a mage on the level of father or grandfather to pierce through it. Even if someone is able to manage that, the gadgets will record the time the incident took place and the general method it was used. The brand of magic that I used derived from the Sharman-arts. Enchantments can be overwritten, but trinkets of this art can only be replicated by the crafter. Thus, making this variant of security measures much more reliable than simple enchantments.
In the last few days, I been also visited by the second son of house Alain, the house of the arcane. And his name was for some kind of unfathomable coincidence Ulbert. The moment I saw him, I couldn't help but to see my old friend Ulbert Alain Odle in front of me. To say I was dumbfounded would be an understatement. He had messy greyish-black curly hair, pale unblemished skin, a pair of bright yellow eyes and to put the icing on the cake he had the signature smug look my friend had on his game avatar. My mind was sending me mixed signals and it did not help that this "Ulbert" even had Ulbert's sense of drama and is edgy smugness. I kept telling myself that he wasn't the Ulbert I knew.
[Flash back]
Two days before Orientation Day. Since my last message to Lucia Ctilitc, there had been no scrying attempts so far. From what I can guess, she is either waiting for me to let down my guard or she finds the effort not worth the possible rewards and gives up. I believe it's the former and hope it's the latter. Sitting in the living room I am currently working on my fifths {scrying punishing} talisman. Its base is made from the upper half of a goblin skull which its front- and backside are folded together resembling a crab torso.
Then, someone knocked on the door. Nilzyl answered the door. "Ainzack, there is some one who wishes to seek an audience with you. He asked if you had a moment to spare for the second son of house Alain." Nilzyl reported. I inwardly frowned at this information. From my education back in Vetdrich, I learned about the other noble houses and their histories under the tutelage of my father. When I first heard the name Alain I thought about my old friend from the past. I thought he might be in this world just like me, but my hopes steadily diminished the more I learned about them. In the end they are just a household that had the middle name as that of my friends. Still a part of me didn't want to abandon the hope that my friends are brought into this world by that white lion.
"Let him in." I saw no danger. Even if he had ill intentions, my apartment is currently my domain of power. If he tried anything, then he only has himself to blame for his actions.
"Thank you for your generous hospitality, sir Ovirick. I am Ulbert Alain, second son of the house of arcane crafts." A curly-haired boy my age introduced himself with elegance in every set he took. My hands stopped functioning, and my sense of reality was running amok inside my head. I didn't think I heard him correctly. For a moment there, I thought he introduced his name to be Ulbert.
I didn't know what kind of reaction I made but this "Ulbert" looked to be taken aback…
[Flash back end]
My trip down memory lane was heavy. After the 'new world Ulbert' left my apartment, I was able to regain my senses. Later Iyzlin and Nilzyl told me that new world Ulbert informed me that he proposes an alliance of mutual benefits to gain prestige in the long run. He wanted to say more, but since I was out of it and unfocused during the whole conversation. Both twins were on edge during the entire time and the tension in the room became metaphorically think enough for it to be able to be cut with a butter knife. So, the second son of Alain wrapped up the conversation and left in a hurry. The twins told me that during the one-sided conversation, my breathing was heavy, and my eyes had a scary look in them and the emotions on my face were constantly shifting. They made sure that it wasn't something the second son had done, since he too was genuinely taken aback by my behavior. Myself on the other hand am still mentally recovering from the uncanny resemblance between the 'new-world Ulbert' to my friend Ulbert Alain Odle. Hope this "Ulbert" isn't someone to spread rumors. I have enough on my plate already.
[Line break: Orientation Day]
Following Nilzyl to the assigned classroom, while Iyzlin follows me from the back we arrived at our classroom (Class A-II). In the front of the room, there is a podium where the teacher holds their lectures. Eight long-tables are stationed in four rows on the right and left side, leaving a path in the middle to walk through.
From the look of it there are already a few students that have arrived before us and are waiting for our homeroom teacher to arrive. I picked a seat in the second row on the left side of the classroom. Both the Sakahida twins sat one row behind me. To the right on the third row sat a Jironian boy with a neatly trimmed bob-cut wearing something similar to Shinto robes with red seams running on the edges. Infront of him sat two girls, one seems to be a snow-elf from Gaeaf. She had platinum blond hair and a pair of piercing ice-blue eyes, in combination with her flawless marble-white skin makes her the perfect image of an ice cool beauty. The girl next to her was a messy haired Pinkett with her eyes covered by some kind of runic eyepatch. Infront of Ainz sat two male students, one appears to be a beast-kin of the Feline race and the other one seems to be an edge lord with thin chains wrapped around his arms and a dark-red shoulder cape hugging his shoulders.
"Excuse me? is the seat next to you vacated?" a girl's voice asked me from my right. She had roughly combed black hair like the mane of a wild horse, silver eyes contrasting her pitch-black hair. She wore a baggy navy robe with a hood hanging from the back of her attire. The atmosphere around her seems to be somewhat gloomy. Using {Mana sense} I am able to see a thin veil of mana wrapping around her form like a cocoon. By the looks of it, she seems to be an Auramancer. According to the books in the library, those that have talent in the arts of Auramancy have the ability to enhance their attributes to an insane level.
"Of course, the seat is unoccupied." I saw no reason to refuse her. Besides, she could prove useful as an ally or a future recruit to my party once I goes adventuring. "greatings, I am Ainzack. But you can call me Ainz for short." I reached out my hand for a handshake. "Auirn, Auirn is my name. Nice to meet you." She shook my hand timidly.

To be continued…
A/N: Finally finished, took me longer than I planned. I would liked to write more, but I am burned out by life. I have no idea how to write the next chapter and am open for suggestions. Reviews really keep this story alive.(no joke)
