"Next," I declared in a monotone as I spoke into the walkie talkie to inform the gym trainer manning the counter to let in the next challenger. Grumpy lazily scratched the back of his right ear using his hindleg, proving that the challenger that we just sent away crying in tears wasn't much of a challenge to him. I'm starting to believe that my suspicions were spot on, that Grumpy was born from parents who were specifically paired together to mate and produce exceptionally powerful offspring. He adapted and improved a little too fast.

I leaned back in the chair I had dragged out from somewhere and sat on. Usually, the gym trainers are not supposed to battle the challengers while sitting down like a gangster from the dumps but I could care less about such things. The battles were simply too boring for me and it's not worth tiring my legs to stand the entire day entertaining self-entitled brats.

The next challenger was another girl probably only about fourteen years of age. Great, hopefully this one won't leave the room crying like the previous one did.

"Maximum of three pokemon, substitutions are allowed, items not allowed. Any other questions?" I repeated the rules and regulations for what was probably the umpteenth time this afternoon. I would never have volunteered for this job earlier this afternoon if I knew it was going to be this boring. I'd thought they would be more of a challenge since Grumpy was the only pokemon I'm using.

Shit, it's only been a few hours since I started helping out and I still have at least two more weeks to go. I'm going to die of boredom here.

Ten minutes later, another girl was sent crying out of the platform that I am stationed at to battle challengers sent my way. Grumpy released an exaggerated yawn and walked up to where I am before lying down by my feet to take a short rest.

"Too easy for you, huh?"

Grumpy let out a bored grunt.

"Um, Jacob?" I turned my head to see the fool who tried to challenge my hydreigon and failed miserably, addressing me by the fake name I had given them. What's his name again? Reynold?

"Yeah?"

"Do you want a… swap?"

"Need a break?" I asked the pikachu lying down on the floor, who simply shook his head. In fact, it looked a little annoyed at the thought of not being allowed to continue battling.

"I think Grumpy still wants to battle. He's not done yet," I replied to Reynold, who let out an awkward laugh after hearing my reply.

"Uh, it's just that… the other gym trainers behind haven't… had a chance to fight?" Reynold awkwardly tried to explain before quickly waving his hands as though worried that I might just sic hydreigon on him again. "Not like we mind, of course! But it does discourage the challengers waiting outside after they saw how every single trainer before them was kicked out at the first platform and not being able to progress inwards…"

I stroked my chin in thought. Since the only pokemon that I could possibly use to entertain Intermediate level challengers was Grumpy, the gym trainers all unanimously decided that I will be the perfect first obstacle for any challengers deciding to attempt the Nimbasa City Gym Challenge. Elesa's gym challenge was designed to be rather straightforward. To earn yourself the right for a battle against Elesa, the challenger has to defeat four consecutive gym trainers with only a maximum of three pokemon. Once a gym trainer has been defeated, that gym trainer will take a break to heal their pokemon while another gym trainer steps in to fill that vacancy to entertain the next challenger. So far, there was no need to replace me yet, which means that no challenger had managed to progress beyond the first gym trainer to challenge the next three behind.

I can understand why the gym trainers decided to place me as the first obstacle since I have only one pokemon that I will use to fight. It was supposed to make the challenge progressively harder and they didn't expect a pikachu who couldn't even use Thundershock properly to last over ten minutes and we had been going at it for hours. They fully expected me to switch out with another gym trainer on standby long ago. I could also choose to use the electric types owned by the Nimbasa City Gym that Elesa and her gym trainers also use to test the challengers, but I don't see a point in doing so thus far.

"How many challengers have I defeated so far?"

"About… twelve? I think?" Reynold did a rough estimation while doing a quick count with his fingers. "There's still about another twenty more waiting in line but Gloria -the girl manning the reception- said that some had decided to try their luck another day when they saw how almost all of the challengers before them left the first obstacle crying…? And that's… not a very... encouraging sight…?"

"You can pass down the word to whoever is still waiting in line that too bad, I'm here to stay for the next two weeks at the very least."

Reynold winced, clearly a little afraid of me after the display of power I demonstrated to all the gym trainers earlier this morning who were there to witness it. None of them except for Reynold had yet managed to muster the courage to come and take the initiative to approach me.

"You really don't need a break…?"

"Grumpy still wants to battle," I lightly nudged the little rat with my foot as I said so and he responded with an annoyed growl. "And he needs the practice anyway. Where else am I going to find so many willing sacrifices to further pave Grumpy's road to becoming the murder incarnate of all pikachus?"

"M-Murder i-incarnate?!"

"Look, if Elesa hasn't said anything about this then it means she's fine with it, just send in the next challenger already. Oh, you can also tell the next three gym trainers behind to just take a break or something, I will inform you if someone actually manages to get past Grumpy and head for their platform."

Reynold left me alone, knowing that there was no convincing me otherwise. Grumpy looked rather pleased that I had managed to find an excuse to allow him to continue terrifying- ahem, I mean- educating the next generation of Unova trainers. That's what Elesa said her gym is for, right? Guide and educate the next generation?

"You are one scary pikachu, you know that? You are the worst nightmare for every future challenger until we get fired for being too good at our job."

Grumpy's subsequent grin unsettled even me. This damn little murder rat.

As it turned out, no challenger managed to get past my platform to challenge the subsequent gym trainers behind me for the rest of the day until the gym closed.

Reynold volunteered to show me to the pantry where Elesa and her gym trainers have their meals. Since there are battles scheduled tonight for Elesa to test challengers who had earned the right to challenge her, the gym will be working longer hours today.

"Urgh, freaking roller coasters," I cannot help but grumble after I got out of that darn contraption. No idea why Elesa thought putting those things in here was a brilliant idea. Reynold let out a laugh at my remark.

"Nimbasa is the city of entertainment and Elesa thought that we should create a way for challengers to have fun while embodying the very essence of Nimbasa City. I think having a mini amusement park in the gym fits us just fine."

Reynold and I were tasked to do a last sweep before locking up one of the two buildings that made up the Nimbasa City Gym. The one on the right was what we were locking up, where challengers were screened by the gym trainers and where they will only earn the right to challenge Elesa if they consecutively defeat all four gym trainers in their way with only a maximum of three pokemon. It's the building where I had been all afternoon terrorising the challengers and will be doing so for the next two weeks or until Alder comes to a decision, whichever is earlier.

"You guys are finally back. Here, eat up, we are all waiting for the both of you to start eating."

Everyone else was already in the pantry located in the left side building, the one where Elesa does her famed catwalk while testing her challengers. Someone handed us the packed meals the gym had ordered for the staff and we consumed our dinner without delay. I will have to feed my team too right after this.

"Wow, look, we are suddenly the hottest topic in town and it's only been one afternoon," Elesa casually mentioned while scrolling through her phone and eating her dinner at the same time. "Newest nightmare of Nimbasa Gym Challenge? The dream slayer of all aspiring trainers? An analysis of the newest gym trainer of Nimbasa City Gym and his pikachu, how did they make every challenger that faced them cry tears of despair? Petition to make the pikachu trainer the last gym trainer to battle against in the gym challenge?"

The gym trainers were obviously trying to suppress their laughter at the weird headlines that Elesa read aloud for us to hear but a simple stare from me had them shut up almost immediately. They were still too afraid of me after seeing a glimpse of what I am really capable of; the memory of hydreigon easily trashing Reynold's team had left a lasting impression on them.

"It's been a long time since we… were the centre of attention," one of the gym trainers spoke up softly, poking at her food with her fork and determinedly not looking in my direction.

"But Jacob's really good. And his pikachu, I never knew a pikachu could be this… amazing without relying on electric type moves," Reynold gestured excitedly and I swore Grumpy glowed a little at the praise. Grumpy's exhausted from all the battles he had been through today, but I'm glad that I made him go through it because the victories he scored are doing wonders for his self-confidence, something I know that he needs to finally overcome his inner demons and accepting that he can still win his battles even if he can never fight like an electric type ever again.

"Where are you from, Jacob?" Another female trainer (Samantha? Sabrina? Georgina?) asked curiously as we finally started to break the ice, using the fake name I had given them without their knowledge. Since there was a possibility that I might go back to undercover work soon, I find it necessary to use the name that I had once gone by in Indigo. Elesa agreed with me on this and besides, if they ever knew I am a Dandolos they would be too unnerved by my presence to be able to properly work alongside me. My family's reputation precedes them.

"Kanto, Viridian," I replied as I fed Grumpy one of the fries in my meal since chewing it feels like chewing on sand in my mouth now that I cannot taste anything.

"Kanto? Then were you there on that day when Team Rocket… You know, that one day war-"

"Lilyanna," Elesa interrupted her before she could continue asking things that might end up to be too personal for me. So that's the girl's name.

"Sorry," Lilyanna quickly muttered before going back to her meal

"So… what made you decide to come here to Unova?" Another gym trainer asked.

"Good question, I'm still wondering about that myself," I mused before giving a reply. "If I have to really give an answer… To try and start over a new life, I guess?"

"You must be an eighth badge trainer and if you are from Viridian… Have you challenged Giovanni before? He's the… you know…"

"Team Rocket Boss?"

Every single Gym Trainer nodded, obviously afraid and curious at the same time.

"Oh, we fought, we fought," I replied as I squeezed more chilli sauce out of the packet. "I lost though. Total defeat."

"Whoa, even you lost…" Reynold visibly shuddered at the thought. "Giovanni must be very strong."

"Extremely so. My hydreigon? Taken out by his golem, one of the most commonly seen pokemon in Kanto. See, you don't need super rare and powerful pokemon to be Gym Leader level kind of strong. If you know what you are doing, any pokemon that falls under your specialisation can be like Giovanni's golem, that's what it means to be a Specialist."

"Jacob's right," Elesa supported my view as she put her phone aside. "A Specialist is someone who can bring out the best in any pokemon of their specialty. Electric Specialists like us should be able to, in theory, be able to allow even the so-called weak pokemon like emolga and pikachu to be able to have a fighting chance against menace such as a hydreigon or a haxorus. You don't need the "best" pokemon to be strong, you need to train pokemon such that they are the most "suitable" ones for you."

The gym trainers all nodded at Elesa's words. As to whether they truly understand what she meant, only heaven knows.

"So what were you before becoming a gym trainer like us?" Reynold asked excitedly and I had to actually take a few seconds to think of an appropriate answer. I don't think he will appreciate me being honest and tell him that he's currently talking to the person who was once Team Rocket's Executive Plague.

"I used to work for the Indigo League. Can't tell you much beyond that, confidentiality issues."

"Wow, cool, Indigo STAR forces?"

I shrugged, allowing him to think whatever he wanted. He took that as a yes.

"So how will they rank someone of your calibre? A captain? A division commander? Or…?"

"The department I belonged to was slightly different. I worked solo and only answered to my boss," I gave a half-truth and let their imagination fill in the rest. "Don't like that place much because they always make me work overtime and I grew sick of it, so I resigned and decided to come to Unova."

"Work solo? Just what kind of department needs you to do that?"

"The kind you don't want to know, trust me," I gave an evil smirk and that easily shut everyone up as they quickly focused their attention back on their meals. Being feared has its perks sometimes.

Good, everything's so much quieter now.

Elesa's challenge is very… bright. Too bright.

"I can only imagine the kind of electric bills she has to pay for all of these," I commented as I observed all the high powered lights shining all over the place as Elesa strutted on the catwalk with her zebstrika, waving at the crowd as they immediately went crazy after seeing their favourite Gym Leader making her appearance.

"True, but we are an electric gym, so it's not really a concern," Reynold agreed with a laugh as we observed the proceedings from a hidden corner of the building on the second floor, free from all the crowd and having a bird's eye view of the entire building. Our job as gym trainers is to usher in the crowd the moment the gym opens to allow them entry, to maintain order, and to assist in the flow of procedures that will be taking place tonight as Elesa entertained the challengers who had earned the right to challenge her prior to tonight and were stuck on the waiting list. Some of the other gym trainers will be facilitating the flow and cueing the challengers when it is their turn to take the stage, but Reynold and I are exempted from this job tonight. Me because it is my first day here and is unable to be of much help until I'm familiar with the procedures, Reynold because he already had his turn last week.

Thus, we are put on security duty, which means just observing the crowd from high above and hopefully we don't spot any idiots trying to do anything funny because that would mean extra work for us.

"Is it always this… loud?" I asked Reynold from where we were as the screams nearly deafened my ears. Greninja and umbreon were accompanying me, curious about the proceedings taking place below. Grumpy made himself comfortable as he perched himself on the top of my head.

"Usually it's a lot louder, everyone loves Elesa," Reynold said with a big grin, his ampharos standing beside him and agreeing with a nod of its head.

"Usually?"

"There had been fewer trainers attempting the gym circuit ever since the Lacunosa Invasion and Team Plasma became an official terrorist organisation. Part of it was because a handful of trainers subscribed to their ideologies and gave up being a trainer altogether, but mostly it's because… it's just not safe anymore. Like, you will hear stories or see the news that some unlucky trainer on their journey ran into and got mugged by those Plasmas, forcing them to relinquish their pokemon and they got hurt in the process and sometimes if they were unlucky enough they… they returned in body bags. Parents are less willing to allow their children to go out on their journey when Unova is so unsafe right now. Advanced level trainers like us are still somewhat safe because we more or less are able to defend ourselves and even if we can't win, we can still run. Beginner or Intermediate level trainers? They are just ripe for the picking for Team Plasma."

I remained silent in thought as I processed this news, which more or less matched with what I have found out thus far in my own independent investigations of Team Plasma. The number of people who were applying to be trainers had dropped drastically ever since Team Plasma conducted the attack at Lacunosa, and the gym circuit dropout rate had skyrocketed to at an all time high ever since Team Plasma had been targeting trainers who were not yet ready to defend themselves against such threats.

Team Plasma is trying to slowly weaken Unova by nipping all future potential trainers in the bud before they can blossom. Their actions had both directly and indirectly diminished Unova's military strength, both in the present and also in the near future. They are playing the long game here, something which Unova cannot afford to do. For what are they doing this for? World conquest? It can't be for something so lame and stupid, right?

The crowd went wild as the first challenger was introduced and took his position on the end of the platform opposite Elesa. There were no Elite level challenges scheduled for tonight, so that meant that all the battles that we will be spectating are all Intermediate level battles. Correspondingly, Elesa will be using pokemon that her gym had raised for taking part in battles of this level instead of the ones on her main team.

"Could be better," I muttered as I leaned against the railings and watched the battle unfolding below, my hand absentmindedly stroking Grumpy on the head as he also decided to stand on the railings in order to take a better look. My experienced eyes had spotted the challenger's flaws in an instant. He could beat Elesa's chosen pokemon for tonight's challenge if he had knowledge of his shortcomings.

"I guess to you everything could be better," Reynold laughed as he too, spectated the battle below. "But hey, I think this is good enough. Kanto's fourth gym is the Celadon City Gym, right? Was Erika already the Gym Leader when you attempted the Gym Circuit?"

"... No?" I tried to remember if Erika would have already been the Gym Leader by the time I was about the age where my peers would attempt the gym circuit. Come to think about it, the only time I experienced a true "gym battle", barring the deathmatch I had with Giovanni, were the battles I had this afternoon with Grumpy. The only difference was that instead of becoming the challenger, I am now the gym trainer.

Hmph, what a way to experience my first ever gym challenge.

The first challenger didn't last long, the eelektrik Elesa was using had him beat soon enough. Still, he was good enough for Elesa to decide to reward him with her Bolt Badge and the crowd gave a loud round of applause when the announcer declared that the challenger had passed Elesa's test. I cannot help but lose myself in my thoughts, wondering if this was what I would have experienced with Jane if our lives were a little more normal, if we didn't…

I shook my head to rid myself of such thoughts. No point thinking about it now.

The announcer called for the second challenger to take his place. By all means nothing about that challenger should catch my attention but for some reason, the way he carried himself as he walked up the stairs to the catwalk just cannot help but catch my eye. It's like my instincts were telling me that something was very wrong with this person even if I cannot place a finger on it.

I never ignored my instincts. It's what kept me alive for so long and the only time I ignored them was when I chose to try stopping Giovanni at all costs. I cannot help but subtly straighten my back and observe the second challenger a little more closely, something that didn't go unmissed by my pokemon.

Lookout. Suspicious. Trainer. I discreetly signed to my pokemon out of Reynold's sight and subtly pointed in the direction of the challenger. Greninja gave a silent nod of acknowledgement before camouflaging himself and disappeared. I released honchkrow and weavile from their pokeballs, who blended very well in the darkness of the corner where we were currently at as they immediately went on alert the moment they spotted what I was signing to them.

"Jacob?" Reynold asked when he heard me releasing two more pokemon out.

"Nothing, just thought that they might want to watch this battle too," I easily lied and distracted Reynold from greninja's sudden disappearance. It might just be needless paranoia on my part, but I always preferred to be safe than sorry. I can feel spiritomb becoming restless within my shadow, responding to the emotions that it sensed from me.

The announcer continued hyping the crowd, announcing the challenger and his name… blah blah blah. My eyes were still observing the challenger critically, trying to figure out why his presence unnerved me so. I even did another sweeping glance of the building from where we were hidden above but spotted nothing suspicious.

Elesa released a joltik out for battle, calling for the second challenger to do the same. The second challenger released a freaking steelix that almost caused the entire platform to crash from its weight alone and this was when I knew something was very very wrong.

Intermediate level trainers are not supposed to be skilled enough to be able to keep a steelix on their team, let alone one as powerful as this particular steelix. This is what you would expect from an Elite level trainer. Elite level challenges are conducted in another section of the building where the battleground is built to take on the worst punishments such pokemon can dish out. This section that everyone was in was only designed to soak up the damage inflicted by Intermediate level pokemon and below, definitely not enough to withstand the rampage of such a powerful steelix.

This had to be done on purpose. This is a premeditated act of terror.

In a rapid succession of events that unfolded in the blink of an eye, the man zipped open his jacket, revealing the countless pokeballs hidden underneath and strapped to his chest as the contraptions released an equal number of boldores onto the platform, each of them glowing a faint white in preparation of a move that I am all too familiar with as an ex terrorist.

Explosion. The perfect move to conduct terror attacks, especially suicidal ones, due to its low cost and high efficiency. This is an act of suicide bombing.

"NOBODY MOVE!" The man yelled when the crowd went hysterical and before Elesa could try and take him down, one of his boldore fired a Power Gem into the air that forced her to abort what she was trying to do. That warning shot also silenced the crowd immediately.

"NOBODY MOVE, OR WE WILL ALL DIE TOGETHER! TRY IT! TRY IT AND TAKE A SINGLE STEP AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS TO US ALL!"

Shit, I hate it when my premonitions are right.

"Oh s-shit, w-we n-need to…"

"Reynold. Hey, look at me," I lightly slapped the teenager on the cheek, snapping him out of his panic and forcing him to look at me. "Look, you can panic later. Now, I need you to listen. That guy down there doesn't know that there are still two of us up here, which means we still have a chance to resolve this situation. I need you to escape undetected and get the police here, now. Can you do that?"

Reynold nodded, still a little in shock.

"Then move," I gave him a light shove to get him moving and that finally snapped him out of his trance. He quickly ran for the secret exit out of this building with his ampharos silently following after him as I turned my attention to what was happening below.

"Calm down," I can hear Elesa speaking with her arms raised in the man's direction in her attempt to placate him. She was wearing a wireless mic on her person due to the entertainment nature of her battles, so that people can hear how she commands her pokemon over the din of the crowd's cheers. Now, her voice was being amplified in an unsettling way due to how eerily silent the building had turned into the moment the challenger became a terrorist.

"Trust me, I am calm," The man replied and warned Elesa to stop inching her way towards him. I tuned myself out of their subsequent conversation as I made my preparations, releasing all of my pokemon except for hydreigon and drapion. Now is a good time to act.

"Objective: neutralise the steelix and boldores without harming the civilians below. They might explode with Explosion, so our only way to resolve this quickly is through taking them down with Hypnosis before they can react. Ninetales, exeggutor, spiritomb, that's your job, prioritise the steelix before the boldores. Everyone else, assist them. Zoroark, run interference. Weavile, get to his pokeballs and recall as many as you can the moment we make our move."

I spotted Grumpy, whose nervousness was plain as day for us to see.

"Stick with us and you will be fine," I tried to reassure Grumpy as best as I could as I patted his head and lifted him up, letting him hitch a ride on my shoulder. "If you still want to stick with us after this, know that this is just a small taste of what we had to go through almost everyday until recently. For now, I need your help too, we can't do this alone. Are you coming?"

Grumpy gave a soft yet definitive squeak. Good.

"Exeggutor, prepare to teleport us to that idiot. Honchkrow, you move independently from above. Nosy, have you hacked into the gym's system?"

My smartwatch flashed once in affirmation.

"Good, cut the lights at the count of three, resume lighting after one second. Three, two, one, move out."

Exeggutor teleported us just right before the lights went out, giving us that one second of opportunity to reach the wannabe terrorist undetected before the lights turned on once more to allow us to properly fight in a venue that we were unfamiliar with. By then, my team and I had positioned ourselves right in front of the man, just right within the protective circle that he had hidden himself behind his boldores.

At this distance, it is faster to just punch this fucker myself.

I socked the man in the jaw with a powerful uppercut, forcing his head to whip upwards from the blow and knocking him out instantly. At the same time, I could spot the steelix losing strength and falling, telling me enough that someone on my team had managed to get it to fall asleep. I could see weavile swiftly running his claws along the switches of the pokeballs woven into the inner shirt of the fallen man, forcing the recall of his pokemon as soon as he could. Thankfully, one of those pokeballs that weavile managed to reach was one that recalled the steelix before it crashed into the spectators below.

Still, there were too many boldores to recall them in time. The boldores were obviously pre-instructed to explode if their trainer were incapacitated and were starting to glow even whiter at an alarming rate. We only had one second to try turning the tide of the situation and while weavile had managed to prevent the worst from happening by managing to recall the steelix and a few boldores, there were still many of those living rocks left unrecalled.

It was then I came to the realisation that there's too many of those glowing rocks for us to catch them all with Hypnosis or recall them back into their pokeballs in time. We need to quickly fall back onto Plan B if we do not want the impending explosions to kill anybody.

"No time! Defeat them all! NOW!"

My pokemon immediately leapt into action upon the change in command. Greninja finally revealed himself as he sliced through several boldores with a Water Shuriken spinning in each of his webbed hands and continued to charge ahead. Shiftry followed his example and tore through another group of boldores with a powerful Leaf Storm, taking extra care not to implicate the screaming civilians below as they made their mad rush towards the exit. Bisharp was punching holes through the boldores with his metal arms as everyone assisted them, making sure that the boldores were unable to go through with Explosion until we were certain that they were either defeated or killed.

Countless arcs of electricity warped around us from behind and struck the remaining boldores that were further away from our reach, paralysing them in an instant and thus preventing the other boldores that we had not yet reached from using Explosion. I turned around, spotting electric types that I am sure belong to Elesa's main team assisting us from afar, my interference finally providing her the chance to release them out for battle. My eyes met Elesa's and we exchanged a glance, immediately understanding what we both have to do.

Elesa and her pokemon will ensure that the boldores will not explode before my team and I get to them and knock them out. She is the foremost expert when it comes to inducing paralysis and I am an "expert" in the art of murder. If anyone can prevent the boldores from moving even a single muscle before they can explode, it's her.

It only took about ten more seconds, but that was one of the longest ten seconds of my life until it ended when greninja knocked out the last boldore.

"Not bad," I knelt down to pat Grumpy who was crouching on all fours beside me in high alert, telling him that he can now relax and to praise him for a job well done. Grumpy had helped neutralise a boldore or two by quickly closing the distance with Quick Attack before applying paralysis on them with Nuzzle. It only served to hinder the boldores for a second or two, but that few seconds was just what my team needed to put them down until Elesa was able to call out her main team to assist us.

I only remembered that I am actually on the catwalk and am now the centre of attention from everyone present when roars and applause nearly deafened my ears. Crap, I never wanted to draw so much attention to myself. I abhor attention.

Time to run.

"Nosy, lights out."

The lights in the building immediately flickered out. By the time they turned back on a few seconds later, we were long gone.
