"Alright, prepare yourself!"

Alex put himself into a combat stance, his eyes focused on the figure standing at the other end of the training field. The figure pulled back her massive purple-black bow, her green hair swaying in the wind as she aimed an arrow tipped with mamono realm silver directly at him.

"Ready, set, loose!" she yelled while letting go of the bowstring.

The arrow soared through the wind, making its way directly to Alex's chest. Before it could get there, its progress was arrested by the sudden appearance of a shimmering yellow wall, and it clattered to the ground.

"Great work Alex!" Primera Concerto bounded over on all fours, the werewolf-elf's face beaming with pride as she stopped before Alex. "Your reflexes are only continuing to improve every day!"

Alex heard some polite clapping behind him. Turning around, he saw Astara, a Dark Mage and his current magical mentor, approaching with a pleased expression on her face.

"You are doing well Alex. Your mana shield does not contain any weak spots. Now that you're able to cleanly cast your spells, we can start working on strengthening them."

Alex nodded, already dreaming of what he could stop next with his shields. A thrown spear? A scorpion? A fully-loaded hwacha? His mind raced with the possibilities.

It had been three weeks since Alex and Druella returned from their adventure in Steylia. As soon as the prisoners from The Order had all been processed and handed off to eagerly-awaiting monsters, Druella assigned Astara to assist Alex in discovering his magical abilities. Primera wasn't initially involved, but she caught wind of Alex's training regimen and eagerly offered to assist. The werewolf-elf turned out to be a very patient and helpful teacher, giving him advice about maintaining his reflexes in combat and testing out the strength of his shields with arrows. Alex didn't know why Primera took on this task for herself, but he suspected that Wilmarina might have asked her to do it as a friendly favor.

Either that, or she just really enjoys shooting at people.

"But before we continue, tell me Alex- how do you feel? Do you feel any sense of lethargy or fatigue? Are you capable of launching such a spell again?"

Astara had once been a mage-nun serving at an Order convent before her distaste towards the faith's dogma caused her to abandon her vows and flee into Lescatie. Exposure to the large amounts of mamono mana in the realm caused her to awaken as a Dark Mage, and now she had stayed in the Realm ever since loyally serving Druella while waiting for the day she could find herself a husband.

It was through her expertise as a mage that Druella chose to hire her to teach Alex and uncover the true extent of his newly-awakened magical abilities. At first, Alex could barely do a few spells each day before collapsing through a sheer lack of mana, but after three weeks he now had a firmer grasp on his limits. His output was still rather low, but it only continued to grow as his body absorbed more and more of Druella's mamono energy.

Yeah, and Druella is definitely not letting up in that regard.

In addition to his mana shields, his abilities in pharmacomancy were only continuing to improve. By practicing on what he could only call the magical version of a CPR dummy, Alex could now close wounds and heal bruises through concentration and maintaining a friendly attitude towards the "patient". Currently, Astara had him focusing on physical wounds- healing illnesses of the mind was too delicate of an operation for a novice like him.

Alex looked back at Astara and gave her a firm nod. "Yeah, I feel like I still have a few good spells left in me."

Astara smiled at his response. "In that case, how about we try something new today?"

Something new? It's about time!

While Alex did enjoy creating shields and practicing his healing skills, he eagerly awaited the opportunity to do something a little more…explosive.

"Now, my pupil, let's start by testing your affinity for elemental magic! Just stand over there and I'll instruct you on how to cast them!"

Alex got into position. Once I get a firm grasp on these spells, Druella will have no choice but to take me along everywhere!

[]

For heaven's sake, what is wrong with me!

The last few hours had been nothing but a conga line of disappointment- nearly every spell Alex tried utterly failed to work out. His fire balls fizzled out inches away from his fingertips, his ice spells only created a mildly-cool breeze, and his attempts at water magic barely even caused a ripple in the water buckets he was practicing with.

Alex did everything he was told- heavy concentration, accurately whispering the incantations, imagining the elements bursting out of his fingers- but nothing seemed to click. After several more failures and a few emptied mana potions, Astara finally signaled him to stop.

"Hmm, it appears that your affinity lies with shields and pharmacomancy." she said, her brow furrowed in thought. "Some heroes and incubi are capable of being jack-of-all trades, able to grasp nearly any form of magic. Others are limited to mastering only a few, unable to grasp any other forms."

So I can only master healing magic and mana barriers? Great, instead of being an ultra-powerful wizard, I'm forever relegated to a support class!

I guess this isn't the end of the world- support classes can be cool too. Let's see- Aerith, ummmm…Donald Duck in Kingdom Hearts,…uhhhh…Medic?

Ah, forget about the cool factor! How can I stand beside Druella in battle if I can't throw my own punches?

His distress must have shown on his face because Astara approached him and put a hand on his shoulder. "Hey, don't look so glum my dear pupil. Everyone has their specialty. Don't view this as a detriment- instead, learn to focus on your talents and develop them to their fullest potential!"

Primera walked over to join them, patting Alex in the back with a pawed arm. "Don't worry too much about it, Alex. I may be skilled in archery, but if I were to face Wilmarina in a sword duel, I'd be at an extreme disadvantage. We all have our strengths and weaknesses, all you have to do is discover them and become the best person you can be!"

The support of his two trainers made him feel a little bit better. I guess I can still be useful in battle. And, to be honest, I might be better off not performing any violent acts of magic that could put someone's life at risk. But what kind of support would a lilim need?

Alex heard footsteps behind him. Turning around, he could see Wilmarina approaching, her black cloak barely hiding her curvaceous succubus body.

"Oh, Wilmarina! Are we going to practice some sword fighting today?"

Besides his magical training, Alex also began taking sparring sessions with Wilmarina whenever she was available. There was no consistent schedule- the Dark Hero was frequently busy attending her husband. But nonetheless, she was a friendly yet firm teacher as she demonstrated to Alex the basics of sword-fighting.

They had only been training for the past three weeks, so Alex's skills were still very much undeveloped. But with an ex-Hero training him, he was sure that one day he'd be capable of great feats.

Maybe sword-fighting is how I'll keep myself from being a mere support class- I'll be a support that bites!

Wilmarina gave him a warm smile. "Hmm, someone's excited! But unfortunately, not today Alex. Lady Druella sent me over to fetch you- she wants you back at the castle. The Black Goat Sabbath has finished analyzing your mana and is ready to deliver the results."

Alex felt a little disappointed that they wouldn't be training today, but part of him was legitimately curious about the strange properties of his mana. His incubization was far slower than most men exposed to the mamono mana of a lilim and a Dark Mamono Realm, he possessed a strong resistance to many of the effects of mamono mana, and Druella was unable to effect his mental state unless they were already engaged in sexual intercourse.

Is it all because I'm from a different world? Or is something else going on?

After saying his goodbyes to Primera and Astara, he followed Wilmarina back to Lescatie's castle.

[]

"Alex, husband, thank you for answering my summons. I hope that I haven't interrupted your training today."

Druella waited for him in Castle Lescatie's throne room, the stained glass windows lighting the room in an eerie, pinkish purple hue. Queen Francisca was not present- instead, a baphomet wearing black armor pieces accentuated with purple floated next to her, with Druella's red eye symbol adorning her horns and armor.

Alex shook his head, and Druella continued. "This is Kuroferuru, head of the Black Goat Sabbath," Druella said while gesturing to her companion. "She has been personally analyzing both your mana and the mamono mana we produce. Alex, is it okay if she personally examines you?"

Sure, but if she tries anything I am sprinting out of this room. "Okay." Alex replied.

The baphomet flew closer to him, an eager grin on her face. "Alright, my test subject! Just hold still while I cast a few spells on you! Don't get too excited though, Lady Druella said she'd evict my entire Sabbath if I tried anything daring!"

Thanks for looking out for me, my dear wife, Alex thought to himself as Kuroferuru circled around him. The baphomet cast a few spells that made his entire body glow, but all he felt was a light tickling sensation. At one point, she began feeling his limbs with her small hands. Alex was ready to make a break for it, but fortunately her examinations were entirely clinical in nature.

After a few minutes, the baphomet ceased her examinations and turned back to Druella.

"Hmm, your husband is an utterly unique human, I've never seen anyone like him before. His essence is certainly human, but some typical elements of human mana are missing and replaced with unknown elements. To put it in an analogy- it's like comparing cow's milk to goat's milk. They are both still milk, but can you really say that they're the same?"

Druella raised an eyebrow. "Hmm, interesting. Please go on."

The baphomet continued. "Because of his unique mana, his body is resisting the incubization process. Your mana is being incorporated into his body, but at a much slower rate. In addition, his essence is mollifying the mental effects of exposure to mamono energy- you'll have to really pour it in if you want his mind to budge. He'll eventually become an incubus, but it will take far longer than normal. Just keep showering him with overwhelming love, Druella, and he'll make it!"

Druella nodded, and then gave Alex a suggestive look. No doubt she wanted to get right into "accelerating" the incubization process.

Hmm, I guess that's a good thing. If I wasn't resistant to her energy, I'd probably never want to leave her bedroom, much less go on any adventures. A clear mind is a healthy mind.

Kuroferuru turned back to Druella. "Before I continue, I have a question for you, Lady Druella? When you and your husband are engaged in pleasurable depravity, do you feel any different when he pours his essence inside of you?"

The lilim nodded again. "Yes, besides its delicious taste and the overwhelming feeling of elation and love it gives to me, I feel stronger. The richness of his mana fills me with so much energy I feel like I could take on all of humanity's armies at once!"

The baphomet smiled. "Ah, so it's just as I expected. While his body is resistant to mamono mana, it's quite the opposite in the other direction. While the consumption of human essence by monsters always causes the production of a greater amount of mamono essence by the monster, his mana is somehow even more potent! And it's not stuck at a constant rate- Lady Druella, if you continue having sex with him, your mana output could potentially increase at an exponential rate! With him, you could create entire mamono realms all by yourself! Or monsterize entire populations!"

Druella's eyes glowed with obvious interest, practically salivating at the thought. Then she gave Alex an amorous look, one that conveyed interest, loving desire, and hunger.

Alex, on the other hand, was a little less than enthused. What kind of cruel joke is this? Is God or some other higher power punishing me for my rampant energy drink consumption by turning me into one? And I really don't think that making her even more powerful is a good idea- I'll just be enabling her!

Alex was now trapped in a dilemma- he had to eventually become an incubus in order to realize the true potential of his abilities, but Druella would only be getting stronger as well. And if the lilim really did become as powerful as Kuroferuru suggested, then it would make it far more difficult to convince her to accept more moderate solutions in their future adventures.

Well, it's not like there's anything I can do to stop it. I'll just have to grit my teeth and use every trick in the book to keep her from going all-out.

Kuroferuru then looked at Alex, her eyes glowing with interest. "Such an interesting male. Lady Druella, where did you find him?"

"I cannot tell you that." Druella firmly replied. Alex had asked her to keep his origins secret from everyone, and the lilim obliged.

No matter how scary she might be at times, at least I know that she'll never betray me.

Kuroferuru's petite shoulders slumped a little, but then she turned back towards Alex. "All that power, all that possibility, all contained in the body of one cute human. Say, Druella, what if we shared-"

"No." Alex replied, his voice firm. I've got to shut that idea down fast.

The baphomet pouted. "Hmmph, never mind then. Alright Lady Druella, if you need my assistance for anything else, I am always willing to help!"

Druella gave her a farewell nod, and the baphomet left the room. Now only Alex and Druella remained in the throne room.

"Alex, would you please come with me? I have something you'll certainly enjoy."

The lilim winked as she motioned him to follow her. Oh boy, she's definitely going to have her fill of me for the rest of the day. Despite his misgivings, he followed her out of the room.

[]

Instead of leading him to their bedroom as Alex had expected, Druella brought him to what appeared to be some sort of workshop. Various magical items and parts were strewn about some long workbenches, a cauldron boiled in the corner of the room, and various fabrics hung on the wall. Some of them appeared to be ordinary silks and cloth, but others glowed with an unnatural light.

"Alex," Druella turned to face him. "I understand that you have a dedicated interest in accompanying me throughout my many campaigns and missions. And although I still have misgivings about bringing you into potentially dangerous situations, I can tell that nothing I say or do will change your mind."

"Yeah, that's true." Alex replied. "I want to help you in any way I can, Druella. I don't want to sit around all day- I want to be a worthy husband for you."

Druella smiled. "You're already worthy enough for me, my dear. But I do admit, I am quite touched at the effort you're putting into strengthening yourself. Training with Wilmarina, testing out your magical abilities- you truly desire to follow me everywhere I go."

"Nonetheless", Druella continued. "Staying by my side will only bring you in contact with further danger. Those thugs at Steylia could have easily killed you if I hadn't arrived in time. As for that insolent archer…the less I'm reminded of him, the better. I cannot risk any harm coming to you, Alex."

Is she planning to keep me from coming along after all? Nope, not going to happen, Druella!

"So that's why, in recognition of your bravery, and to ensure that the human I love will be equipped to face anything, I have some gifts for you." The lilim walked over to one of the workbenches, her spaded tail flickering behind her. When she turned around, she held a sheathed sword in her hands. Its hilt was dark purple, and its pommel was adorned with Druella's red eye symbol.

"This is a Dark Knight's Sword, the primary weapon of the Dark Knights of Lescatie. It is made entirely out of mamono ore mined here in Lescatie, so it will never damage an opponent's body- only their mana. You may have only just started learning how to use a sword, Alex, but a lilim's husband should never go unarmed."

Druella offered the sword to him. Alex, his hands slightly shaking, picked up the sheathed blade and held it in his hands. It was light, far lighter than he expected.

Is she really giving me this? I thought she was going to dissuade me from traveling…maybe she actually wants me to come along with her!

Alex unsheathed the sword. Its blade was a dark purple, with a reflective luster that almost made it look like it was glowing. He swung it a few times- he barely felt the sword's weight as it cut through the air.

After putting the Dark Knight's Sword back into his sheathe, he turned back to Druella. To think that despite his mistakes and occasional reckless actions, she trusted him enough to hold this!

"Th-thank you, Druella." Alex said, his voice slightly shaking. "I'll be sure to double my training time with Wilmarina, so I can skillfully wield this blade!"

Druella gently patted him on the cheek. "Fufu, I knew you would like it, my husband! But that is not the only thing I have for you."

Druella turned back around and opened a chest near the wall. When she returned to him, she held what appeared to be a long, black cloak. Various intricate runes lined the inside of the cloak, and Alex swore they glowed a little as the lilim's hands traveled over them.

"When I am not running the operations of Lescatie or planning a new mission, I sew magical cloaks to give to particularly prestigious monsters. These cloaks, or 'lilim cloths' as some refer to them, are normally imbued with succubus runes that enhance the seductiveness of the wearer and create what is tantamount to a personal mamono realm underneath its folds. I have never made one for a human male before, but today I decided to finally make an exception."

Druella held out the lilim cloth, and Alex gingerly accepted it. It was incredibly smooth, with a texture like silk.

"Unlike traditional lilim cloths, this one is imbued with runes meant to strengthen your physical body as well as your magical abilities, along with protective charms meant to nullify enemy magical attacks. Since you are not yet an incubus, the personal mamono realm is inactive, but the cloak will recognize you as its owner and not provide any of its benefits to an imposter."

Alex tried on the lilim cloth. It fit his size perfectly, and looked quite stylish with his buttoned white shirt. It almost felt weightless, and its hood felt light and silky when he pulled it over his head.

She made this herself? This is possibly the best gift I've ever received in my life!

It's also a good thing that she didn't include the succubus runes, I really do not want to find out what they do to a man.

"I, erm, do hope you like it, Alex." Druella almost looked nervous, her tail slightly quivering. "If I did not get your size right, just let me know and-"

Alex walked up to Druella and gave her a tight hug, reassuring the lilim that he appreciated her gift. After being startled for a few seconds, Druella returned the hug, her nervous stammer replaced with a bright smile.

"Thank you, Druella, my wife. This is the best thing anyone has ever made for me. I'll be sure to wear it everywhere! I don't know what I can do or give to you in return for this gift, but I'll cherish it forever!"

Wait, I did it again, huh? I know exactly what she'll want from me in return…

and I look forward to it!

"Thank you, Alex," Druella replied while stroking his hair. "If you ever feel sad or alone, just hold onto that cloak and think of me."

She placed a finger underneath his chin and moved his head up so he could look into her wine-red eyes. "Now, about returning the favor. Why don't we head back to our room and fill the night with the sweet songs of our love? You can keep the cloak on."

Before Alex could respond to her lurid suggestion, the door to the workshop swung open. Standing there was Wilmarina, breathless as if she ran all the way to find them.

"Lady Druella, I have urgent news! There's a column of lamia refugees approaching from the south, but 50 soldiers of The Order are in hot pursuit! If we don't hurry, they'll be intercep-"

Wilmarina stopped, finally noticing the scene in front of her- Druella, holding onto her husband in a tight embrace with a lustful expression on her face.

"Oh," Wilmarina said, her face red as she smiled wickedly. "I am interrupting something…intimate?"

Druella looked really reluctant to let Alex go, but she turned around and faced the Dark Hero. "Hmmph, what terrible timing. But I will not allow a human or monster to perish if I can help it. Wilmarina, prepare an ambushing party- I will be joining you this time."

She then turned towards her husband. "Alex, I will permit you to join us in defeating this Order contingent, but only if you promise to stay out of sight and remain close to the rest of the monsters. Do I have your word?"

"I promise." Alex said. Finally, a chance to use my abilities in action!

Satisfied by his answer, Druella smiled and took him by the hand. They then followed Wilmarina out the door to prepare for the inevitable encounter.

[]

Captain Darya carefully navigated her horse through the boulders obstructing her path, her brown ponytail swaying in the wind. The Hero of the Order briefly glanced behind her- the rest of her command navigated their mounts through the same path she took, hoping to quickly get out of the boulder field and catch up to the fleeing monsters.

If we can just ride down those lamia, we'll be one step closer to making up for the Disaster at Steylia. It'll only be a small step, but a step nonetheless.

Darya grimaced- many of her friends had volunteered to go on General Tyrax's doomed expedition, and they were all now reported missing. She still hoped in vain that they were only prisoners and the Pope might arrange some sort of amnesty with the Steylian Emperor, but more than likely they were now all in some monster's stomach.

And to think Tyrax ran away…I hope the Pope has him publicly whipped!

Darya looked around at her surroundings, frowning slightly. Although her soldiers were finally making it out of the boulder field, the forested slopes on either side of her made her feel uneasy.

We could easily get ambushed here, good thing I sent scouts ahead of me.

Just before she could finally ride out of the boulders and onto a clear path, a figure stepped out from behind a tree. She had silvery-gray hair, a purple longsword, and a black cloak that did little to hide her lithe figure along with the wings sprouting from her back.

A succubus! Before she could yell at her men to assume battle formations, the succubus spoke first.

"Good afternoon, my dear cute travelers! You must all be in a hurry to make it to Lescatie, so we've decided to send you a welcome party! Please don't resist, it'll be easier that way."

At the mention of Lescatie, Darya realized that she recognized that succubus. Her current depraved appearance was a far cry from her previous noble splendor, but Darya remembered seeing her once before- Wilmarina Noscrim.

"You have some nerve, traitor, showing up after all the damage you caused." Darya's voice radiated anger and disgust. "Pope Callicstus will look forward to receiving your head!"

Wilmarina frowned at this statement. "Aww, so you're all going to play hard to get? A shame, but don't you realize it's already futile?"

So this is an ambush! Damn, what happened to my scouts? "Archers, take her down!" Darya screamed, hoping to at least take down the ex-Hero before her soldiers were overrun.

Her bowmen loosed their arrows at Wilmarina, but a shimmering wall suddenly appeared right in front of her, preventing the projectiles from hitting her. As the arrows fell uselessly to the ground, screams echoed behind her.

Turning around, Darya could see that the ambush had begun- monsters had bounded out of the forest and were now assaulting the soldiers under her command. A black-furred hound tackled one knight right off of his horse before carrying him back into the forest. Another knight dueled with what she initially thought was a normal woman with blue hair. The knight knocked her head right off…only for her to pick it right up again and take advantage of his surprise to strike him down. Finally, a harpy swooped down and plucked another soldier off his mount, taking him away to who-knows-where.

I can't believe it, in my haste to catch up with the lamias I've led everyone into a trap! This is all my fault!

Just then, she felt something cold stab right into her. Darya turned around- in her distress at seeing her command fall apart, she had completely forgotten about Wilmarina. And now the Dark Hero's blade was jutting out her abdomen.

"Don't be afraid," Wilmarina whispered to her while pulling her off her horse and onto the ground. "Just lay right there and we'll attend to you later." She then pulled her blade out of Darya and went to assist her fellow monsters in taking down the rest of the soldiers of The Order.

She stabbed me, right? But why am I not bleeding? Although Darya was unable to move any of her limbs, she felt no pain or agony. All she did feel was an extreme sense of lethargy, as if all her energy had vanished.

A shadow fell over her. Darya looked up to a terrifying sight- a monstrous woman with glowing red eyes, outstretched wings, and an evil grin that promised all sorts of deviltries.

"Fufu, you'll do nicely." The woman's immoral voice made her shiver in fear. "Don't be too nervous. Once I'm done taking you, there will be no fear left in your mind. Only sweet, light, thoughts of love and pleasure."

[]

"Alright, that should do it!"

The green glow faded from the Ogre's arm, revealing that the scrape she took earlier in battle was now completely healed.

"Hah, thanks kid!" The Orge gave him a wide grin. "Now I can finally go try out my new man!"

As the Ogre walked away to where all the prisoners were being held, Alex could not help but smile. Although some poor bloke was about to be in for a rough time, he still felt proud about finally contributing to something.

Protecting Wilmarina at the start, healing the wounded…it might not be much, but it'll further demonstrate to Druella that I want to be actively involved! By the way, where is she?

Alex walked over to a nearby Demon, one adorned with Druella's eye symbol. "Hey, have you seen Lady Druella anywhere?"

The Demon smiled at him. "Hmm, someone's eager to celebrate our little victory! Mistress Druella went to a nearby clearing. Just walk a few minutes west of the rally point, you won't miss it. Though, I do not believe she is alone."

Not alone? Hmm, maybe she's talking to Wilmarina. "Thanks!" Alex told the Demon while running off to find Druella. After following the Demon's directions, he could hear what sounded like heavy breathing in front of him.

What's that sound? Did one of the soldiers successfully evade us? Alex walked around a large tree and into the clearing…and stopped dead in his tracks.

In the center of the clearing was Druella, standing behind a woman with a brown ponytail floating atop a dark mana ball. The woman was nude, with a flushed expression on her face. Her eyes were closed shut, her hands clenched into fists. Thin, black tendrils emerged from the mana ball and constricted her limbs, rubbed against her sides, and traveled in between her legs. Druella fondled her from behind, whispering lurid suggestions into her ear.

Alex felt his blood run cold. That woman, that Hero of The Order who led the party they just ambushed, was now helplessly gasping and moaning as the lilim violated her.

What the hell? Is she…being monsterized?

Druella looked up and finally noticed him. "Oh, Alex," Druella said, speaking as if nothing were amiss. "Were you looking for me? Once I finish freeing the repressed desire from this sweet young lady, I'll come and join you. Unless, of course, you wish to watch."

"Um, no thanks Druella. I'm good." Alex tried his best to disguise his shock.

Druella seemed a little disappointed, but she nodded and returned to attending her catch. As Alex walked back through the forest, his mind struggled to comprehend what he just witnessed.

Druella, she was corrupting that woman! That Hero clearly seemed distressed, should I have tried to stop her? Can you even stop monsterization once it's already started?

Through their time together and their adventures at Steylia, Alex had come to see his lilim wife as a sweet, if a little trigger-happy, succubus princess who showered him with unending love and devotion. But what he saw right now reminded him that there was an entirely different side to her, a side he had almost forgotten about. While Druella, Fourth Princess of the Mamono Realm was willing to show her love and occasional vulnerability to him, to everyone else she was a terrifying figure who spread corruption without any regard for borders or consent.

The way she ravished that girl…is that really the same person who nervously gave me a hand-made gift hours earlier?

Alex was never fond of the corruption aspects of MGE, and seeing it in person disturbed him. As he made his way back to the rest of the monsters, he suddenly felt sick, the image of the girl's flushed face etched into his mind and filling him with nausea.

"Alex, are you okay? You look unwell."

Alex looked up- Wilmarina was staring at him with concern in her eyes. Alex briefly considered telling her the true reason for his distress, but then realized that she might not understand. After all, she probably had monsterized some women herself.

"I, um, just feel tired, that's all. My mana is pretty expended- can we get back to Lescatie soon?"

Fortunately, the Dark Hero bought his excuse. After offering him a hand, they walked over to the rest of the ambushing party, most of whom were busy staking their claims to the prisoners.

But Alex could only keep thinking about the pony-tailed hero and what Druella was doing to her. I cannot let her keep doing this, at least not to people who don't want it.

Sooner or later, he would have to confront Druella about her beliefs and practices. But what should he say? How could he convince her? A million questions raced through his mind as he waited for their return to Lescatie.

Aram walked through the long halls of the Holy Basilica, the spiritual headquarters of The Order of the Chief God. Various statues of heroes both past and present lined the hallway, with the exception of one empty pedestal. The statue it once held had long been smashed into rubble, but the nameplate remained as a reminder of the fate that awaited traitors.

"Wilmarina Noscrim", Aram read. The traitor who sold out Lescatie.

After escaping from the Disaster at Steylia, Aram and Tellack had traveled to the nearest Order-controlled city to provide their own reports of Tyrax's ill-fated expedition. Aram's report had evidently caught the interest of the higher-ups in The Order given that he was now arriving for a personal audience with the Pope himself.

Just what does he want from me? We weren't the only heroes who escaped, does he really want to hear my testimony?

Aram came up to the two massive doors leading to the main chamber of the Basilica. Two Order Knights in silver armor adorned with golden crosses stood on either side, but they motioned Aram to continue forward.

Okay, here goes nothing. And he opened the doors and entered the main chamber.

The Chamber Hall was massive, with enough space to house an army. Atop the ceiling was a massive, elaborate fresco, painted by one of the greatest artists in human history. It depicted the formation of the world by the Chief God, her arms outstretched as all the plants, animals, and elements coalesced around a forming ball. Below that illustration was another depiction, this one being the Chief God creating humanity. As the first humans stood up in a world created for them, the darkening horizon in the distance warned of an approaching danger- the rise of monsters.

On either side of the Hall were massive stained glass windows depicting humanity's various struggles against previous Mamono Lords, along with the heroes responsible for defeating them. However, there was one window at the far end of the Hall that remained a blank white- it would remain unfilled until the current Mamono Lord was finally defeated.

Finally, at the far end of the Hall stood a gigantic statue of the Chief God herself, sitting cross-legged with feathery wings outstretched. Her skin, long hair, and robes were but the pale white of marble, but she held a shimmering blue sphere in her outstretched hands- a sphere that symbolized the universe itself.

Just in front of the great statue stood a golden throne atop a dais, the throne of the Supreme Pontiff and Sovereign of The Order of the Chief God. As Aram made his way through the Hall, he finally got a good look at its current occupant.

Pope Callicstus IV had been a hero in his youth, one famed for his chivalry, piety, and skill with the blade. And although his back was now bent, his hair white, and his once-handsome face now wrinkled and furrowed, his mind was still sharper than ever, and his gaze still exuded power and authority. The Pontiff sat astride his golden throne, wearing an embroidered mitre and clutching an ornate curved staff in both hands as he observed his new visitor.

Aram fell to his knees, his hands splayed on the floor. "Your Holiness," he said aloud, trying his best to hide his nervousness. "I have come to answer your summons."

"Welcome, Hero Aram." Callicstus replied, his voice grandfatherly in tone yet echoing throughout the room. "You may stand my son, we have much to discuss."

Aram stood up and faced the Pontiff. Callicstus studied him for a few seconds, his golden-irised eyes moving up and down.

"I understand that you were a participant in the Steylian campaign, were you not?"

"Yes." Aram confirmed. "I joined up with the other heroes at Dehlia when the holy missive arrived. When the Steylians defeated us in battle, a friend of mine pulled me out of danger and teleported me to safety."

The Pope nodded. "So you were far braver than that fool Tyrax. For his brash arrogance, he will never command a field army ever again. I've demoted him and sent him off to perform garrison duty."

Good, that coward got punished! It's less than he deserved, but I guess having a once-celebrated commander executed would not be good for morale. Especially not now.

The Pope continued to speak. "But I am not here to discuss your conduct in battle. I understand that Steylia was the second time you've encountered a daughter of the Mamono Lord- a lilim."

Aram grimaced. He still remembered the lilim's glowing red eyes staring right through him as she prepared to annihilate him. Thank the Chief God for Tellack.

"Yes, Your Holiness. The first time was at Ashura, when the lilim broke into my command and snatched up a condemned prisoner. That prisoner was also present with her at Steylia."

"Hmm, so the vile harlot has found herself a new toy." the Pope contemplated. Then he looked back at Aram. "My son, I've read your personal description of the lilim, including her adorned symbols. You did not just encounter any lilim, but Druella herself. The demon who conquered Lescatie and plunged it into darkness, and the greatest threat to our faith besides the Mamono Lord herself."

Aram's eyes widened in shock. I can't believe it! The monster who caused us so many agonizing defeats was right in front of me! Damn, if only I was stronger!

The Pope continued. "Yet, despite encountering her not once, but twice, you are still here Aram. Almost no heroes encounter Druella and return to tell the tale, yet you escaped even after loosing arrows at her."

"Erm, I was just lucky, Your Holiness. On the first occasion, she was too busy escaping with her catch. On the second occasion, my friend pulled me out of danger seconds before she could kill me."

"Luck, my son? Or divine intervention?" The Pope leaned forward, his eyes firmly locked on Aram.

Divine intervention? I, I never thought about it that way! Did the Chief God pull me out of danger?

"Hero Aram," the Pope's voice echoed throughout the Hall. "Listen closely. The world is entering a turning point, one that will determine whether we perish at the hands of monsters or bring down this infernal Mamono Lord once and for all. The Chief God's whispers are only growing in frequency and alarm- our armies cannot grow idle even for a second. But unless the Mamono Lord finally makes a personal appearance, the main threat to the continued survival of The Order remains Druella."

"It cannot be mistaken- you, Aram, have a role to play in this tumultuous era. Clearly the Chief God has bestowed her favor on you, so I wish to offer you a chance to demonstrate your loyalty to her. Do you accept?"

Aram was elated. The Chief God, choosing me? If only mother and father were here, they'd be so enthralled!

"I accept!" Aram zealously yelled.

Callicstus smiled. "In that case, you will be performing a special mission for me- you will find Druella, and defeat her. But you will not have to do it alone." He then turned to his right. "You may all enter now."

Three individuals came out of a small side door to the right of the Pontiff. The first to step forward was a man with a black hood, black gloves, and dark, leathery armor. He had a small, black beard on his face, and long, black hair tied in a bun.

"This is Harlen, one of The Order's most talented monster trackers. He will assist you in tracking her down."

Harlen gave him a smile that looked more like a smirk. "Hmm, you don't look like much, kid. But if you really got out of that monster's grasp twice, maybe there's more to you than meets the eye."

The second individual to step forward was a tall, beautiful woman with golden hair. She had three pairs of golden, feathery wings- two on her back and one on the sides of her head. Her armor was a dark blue trimmed with gold, and she carried a massive shield and a hefty golden blade. A faint golden aura surrounded this warrior-woman, making her appear utterly heavenly.

A valkyrie! One of the Chief God's warriors!

"This is Hildera." Pope Callictus gestured to the Valkyrie. "She will be assigned to you for the duration of this mission, and assist you in accomplishing your task."

The valkyrie knelt before Aram, sword in hand. "I am honored to serve you, Hero Aram. From this point forward I swear to protect you from all dangers and lead you to holy victory. May the Chief God guide you on your path."

Aram smiled and accepted her oath. My very own valkyrie! This is turning out to be a great day!

The third and final individual was a shorter young woman in simple white robes. Her hair was a dull brown, and her face would have been entirely plain and ordinary were it not for her eyes- she had golden irises that almost appeared to glow.

Just like the Pope. Are they related, maybe? Alex tried to remember if Pope Callicstus had any relatives. No, not any close ones anyway.

"This is Tara." The Pope said. "She is a hieromancer, one who has received a portion of the Chief God's strength through her blessing. She will be the one to deliver the killing blow against that foul lilim."

Her? She doesn't seem that imposing. Unlike her companions, Tara did not introduce herself, so Aram tried talking to her first.

"You're a hieromancer? With the Chief God's blessings, we are sure to succeed!"

Tara did not say a word, instead staring at Aram blankly. Despite the brilliant color of her eyes, they appeared glassy with disinterest.

Not much of a talker huh? Oh well, if the Pope himself says you're that good, I'll believe him.

But Aram still had a few doubts. Turning to the Pontiff, he said- "I thank you for bestowing this team upon me, Your Holiness. But will three Heroes and a Valkyrie really be enough to stop Druella?"

"If you wish to invite more people, you may." The Pope then smiled, a wide grin that seemed out-of-place for such a serene, holy figure. "But fear not. Tara is no ordinary hieromancer. You will find out soon enough."

No ordinary hieromancer? I now have even more questions! But at least I now know I can bring Tellack along.

Pope Callicstus stood up from his throne, his arm raised as if to provide a blessing. "Aram! Harlen! Hildera! Tara! By the authority bestowed upon me by the Chief God, I give you this order- Find Druella, and STRIKE HER DOWN!"

'It shall be done, Your Holiness!" Aram felt waves of excitement and zeal travel through his body as he yelled his assent. After weeks of disappointment, all of his failure could now be washed away in one holy mission.

Prepare yourself, Druella. I'm going to find you and your little pet, and free this world from your menace.

Author's Note: And thus things begin to ratchet up a little. Up next is a new mini-arc. This one will involve a little more throat-singing.

Timur Beg- Polove is actually the name of the nation of elementalists in the MGE World Guide II, so not an original creation of mine. But something tells me that KC is a bit of a history nerd himself- Zipangu, for instance, was actually the name Marco Polo gave to Japan before any Europeans actually knew what the islands actually looked like.
