As they brought the food to the table Eddie went to wake Emily and help her to the table. Emily woke slowly and once she regained her senses, Eddie helped her up and followed her to the table. She sat between Jamie and Eddie and smiled. This was her very first moment at this table and she knew it would one she'd always remember. She was finally where she belonged.
They said grace and began passing plates of food around in a comfortable silence until everyone
had a full plate. Each takes a chance to bask in the blessings they have received as a family and content, just for a moment, to sit in the quiet that is so rare in their lives. Jamie notes Emily's relaxed demeanor and is so grateful to see that she is truly comfortable here, with all of them. Eddie catches his gaze and nods. They're all going to be just fine. It's Emily who breaks the silence.
"So, what will happen to the man who was driving the car?"
"He was arrested on scene and is being charged with DUI, Reckless Endangerment, and two counts of Aggravated Vehicular Assault in the 1st degree. A security camera on one of the homes caught the whole thing. He'll go to trial and probably get the maximum sentence which is 15 years and $5,000 just for a singular count of Aggravated Vehicular Assault." Erin replied hoping that would rid Emily of any fear.
"Good," Emily replied and went back to eating her food quietly. Eddie grabbed her free hand under the table and clasped it on her lap. Jamie squeezed her shoulder and kissed her head.
"He's not going to get to you, or anyone else again." He whispered softly in her ear. She nodded.
Danny watched all of this and could feel the anger bubbling inside himself. Who was this man that thought he had the right to hurt his family, even if it was just out of ignorance because he was drunk? He did his best to hide his anger, not wanting to bring back any fear that Erin, Eddie, and Jamie rid Emily of but Frank, Linda, and the boys all noticed the change in his posture and felt the tension radiating from him.
Henry was lost in his own thoughts, and similar to Danny he could feel the anger, but most of his own thoughts were forcing him to imagine what could have been if Nicky hadn't seen the car in the nick of time. Jack and Sean were at a loss, because they felt it all, too, but they had no idea how to help make any of it better. So they spent most of dinner looking back at each other and trying to come up with something.
"Oh," Emily starts, "What about the baby, can we bet on what it might be and stuff?" There was a pause and then Henry turned to Eddie.
"Are you…?" He trailed off and she nodded. That sent them over the edge and chaos erupted from around the table.
"Congratulations!" It came from everyone, seemingly at once.
"Do you know how far along you are?" Erin asked.
"Eleven weeks, three days. According to the doctor, I'm due December 30th." Eddie replied.
"Who would have thought when this year started that by the time it's over we'd have two new Reagans at the table?" Linda smiled.
"Kiddo, you were made to be a Reagan," Henry says meeting Emily's eyes, "That was one hell of a way to announce it."
"You know, it definitely feels that way, Pop." She replies and everyone pauses looking back and forth between the two. Emily grins.
"What? I think it's time I start using titles around here." She shrugs, nonchalant. Eddie chuckles. She loves seeing Emily's personality come out. Before anyone can say anything, Henry is up and hugging her from behind.
"We got to say this not too long ago when Eddie joined us at this table and I am so grateful we get to say it again now, welcome to the family, Emily." She smiled with tears in her eyes and rose to hug him again.
"Nowhere I'd rather be." She whispered unable to produce anything louder, but he heard her and that was all she needed. Jamie and Eddie watch with tears in their eyes. Their eyes meet and they nod at each other, ever so slightly as to say, 'yes, she's ours.'
It's not too long before they're all up and hugging her. She relishes in each one. This. This was what it felt like to be a part of a real family. Where love was the first thing that connected them, not anger or abuse like the one she'd known previously.
They all sit back down and finish eating and throwing out bets on the baby, jokes, and getting to know Emily. Once they've had dessert they work together to clean up and wash dishes.
By the time they're on the way home, Emily is drained in the best way possible. She feels more loved in one day then she's felt all her life combined and she's exhausted. She's almost numb because she's so overwhelmed. Five minutes into the drive, she's asleep. Eddie looks over her shoulder at her and smiles.
"She's asleep."
"No surprise there. She's had a long day. She's been through a lot of emotionally draining things today. One thing I know for sure is that Pops will be smiling for a month after tonight."
"Yeah. She's got him wrapped around her little finger already. It's been a week and a half."
"A very long week and a half." Eddie nodded.
"I'm just glad she's finally relaxing enough to show us the real Emily beneath all of the trauma she carries. You gotta give it to her, the kid's funny." Jamie chuckled.
"Yeah, no kidding. She's got perfect comedic timing. She has this spunk to her and she fits right in with us." Eddie laughed.
"That spunk is what's helping her to keep fighting. I hope she never loses it."
"Babe, she's a Reagan in every way but blood and name, though soon enough that will change too, that spunk isn't going anywhere."
"True. She'll probably learn how to better utilize her sarcasm while sitting at that table, too." Jamie smiled and nodded.
"Definitely."
When they got home Jamie carried Emily to her room and Eddie took off her shoe and the boot she had been given to wear on her bad foot since she wasn't supposed to wear it when she was sleeping, took her phone from her pocket and put it on the charger, and covered her up. She turned on the tv in the hopes it would continue to keep the nightmares at bay, turned off the light, and shut the door behind her.
They walked down the hall to their bedroom to get ready for bed themselves. They changed into pajamas, brushed their teeth and climbed into bed. Jamie had to work in the morning and Eddie would have to go into HR at 1PP to fill out some paperwork for an extended leave because she didn't feel comfortable going back to work at least until Emily's leg and ribs were fully healed. She would have to take Emily with her, but she thought it would be good to show Emily how to get to Frank's office, for the future just in case.
"Are you sure about this leave? Either way I got your back but we could figure something else out."
"I'm sure. I just feel like she'd be better off with one of us and you're in a command position, Jay. You can't exactly take an extended leave. We'll be okay money wise, the leave will be paid, I checked. Plus we still have all of our savings."
"I'm not worried about the money, Eds, we'll be fine, but I just wanted to make sure you're okay with it."
"I'm okay with it. I promise, if that changes I will let you know. Besides, it's not like it's permanent, just until she gets a little better."
"Alright, if you're sure. I love you." Jamie kissed her softly.
"I love you, too." She kissed him back.
"Goodnight." Jamie says softly.
"Goodnight." Eddie replies as she snuggles into Jamie's side.
