Arthie woke. He had a blindfold over hid face, and tight, punishing bonds held his wrists and legs together. His lips were cracked and bleeding, and his mouth was dryer than a desert.

Dust coated his shaggy hair. The raw skin were the bonds were stung.

Suddenly he felt the floor shift under him. It was almost like he was being rocked back and forth.

He heard the faint ocean waves, and the groan of a wooden planks. He suddenly he understood that he was on a ship.

He tried to feel for his sister.

"Itzel?" he croaked. He heard a faint rustling noise, signaling that someone was beside him.

"A...Arthie?" A familiar but rasping voice called. It was Itzel.

Arthie could have cried with relief if he had the energy.

"Where are we?" he asked. He wanted to take his blindfold off so badly.

He shifted around until he lifted his arms to try and pry off the blindfold.

His hands twisted uncomfortably but he still managed to partly take the rough fabric off his left eye.

He looked around with a blurry vision. They were in a dark room lacking windows with crudely cut wooden floors. He saw his sister next to him, leaning against the wall and sniffling. She had a couple scratches and bruises, and her lips were badly cracked.

"Itzel...we are on a boat. I think the man moved us onto a bigger ship. Didn't Liam get that bad guy?" he asked, his voice breaking. He thought they had been saved. Obviously they hadn't.

Itzel started to answer, but then suddenly a creaky door banged open.

"Oy! The littl' piggies be awakes!" said a small, slimy, thin Green Fang. It carried a spear.

Itzel whimpered.

"Oy! No talkin'. The Stone Keepers ain't ready fer ye yet," it spat.

"Drap, wot you be yellin' at?" asked another gruff voice from what seemed to be a place outside the door.

"The piggiesssss done woken up," Drap sneered.

Arthie scooched closer to Itzel.

Drap walked over and bopped the butt of the spear on Arthie's head.

"No movin' eithers."

Then Drap turned to the door.

"Bring the sedatives! We'll knock em' out longer this time. They can'ts be awakes until the Stone Keeperssss need em'."

A hulky man with a scraggly beard hobbled in with two thin scraps of fabric. He pressed them against Arthie and Itzel's noses.

But then, Arthie bit the man's finger! The man howled and held his hand. Rage shook in his gaze.

"Why, you little-"

"Stop right there! Don't you dare try to drug us. Liam will come for us, and he'll kick you harder than you've ever felt. In fact, maybe I'll kick you harder than you ever thought was possible!" Itzel bossed bravely.

The man turned to her. "Why, I oughta-"

"Let us go! That's what you ought to do! Didn't your mother teach you good manners?"

The Green Fang flinched, but then rolled his eyes and grabbed the two cloths from the man's hand and forced it on the two children's mouths.

Arthie struggled to hold his breath to no avail, and choked on the sickly sweet smell. It made his nose burn and his eyes water. He felt darkness drag him under.

The last thing he saw was Itzel struggling to stay awake against the fabric pressed against her nose.
