Sup, guys. This is the continuation of Connor's training with Vegeta. Will the Kryptoonian gain flight, or will he need a further push to one day float above the clouds. Hope you enjoy this one, and leave a review on what you think.
Dragon Ball Earth
In the laboratory of one of the greatest scientists on the planet the sound of a welding torch was heard as Bulma Briefs let up from the invention she had been working on ever since she knew her husband and friends had been lost to a universe unknown.
It was done, or at least a part of it. The further armor over the time machine they had found in the wilderness used by Cell in another timeline had finally been fixed and reinforced to handle the energies of the foreign dimensions it would inevitably go through.
Looking at the options on the new navigation system she had she grew angry at her lack of completing the system. Reinforcing it was easy, but having the newly designed Dimensional Interval Machine, or DIM, was impossible to create. Much harder than constructing a navigation system through time, apparently. Traveling to different dimensions was an entirely different thing.
There were an infinite number of dimensions with their own versions of their own realities, and it would take an infinite amount of time to look through all of them to using the navigation system.
However, the bluenette genius came up with another way to find the dimension that her loved ones had been lost in, and it was a wild idea. Someone had to enter DIM, and travel to different dimensions a number of times to gain what could be called a mapping of a number of different surrounding Earths from one jump.
The machine couldn't sense for the other power levels, but someone in the cockpit of DIM could. They would need to have someone who could ki, and that would be for the best.
If there were Earths with any dangers then someone needed strength to fight them off through the ability of ki manipulation if they were going to survive.
Just as she was thinking of this, the sound of a set of footsteps coming ever closer caught her attention. She looked towards the entrance of her lab, seeing two of the strongest mortal beings in the universe.
"Hey Goku! Gohan! How are you guys?" she yelled to the pair.
Goku showed his signature smile, while Gohan looked on with a light one of his own.
"We're fine, Bulma. Me and Gohan just got done with some training. We just came to check on you, or at least more like Gohan wanted to see how your progress was headed, ya' know?" Goku said as he scratched his head with the signature Son smile.
"I'm coming closer every day, but it's the navigation that will be the hard part," Bulma answered. "It would take an infinite time to make a map of the infinite dimensions out there. The only way I can have DIM find the others is to travel to different dimensions and make a road map of the immeasurable dimensions using its AI system. Similar to finding a checkpoint in a video game after completing a mission, other surrounding areas of the multiverse of that Earth will be mapped and the AI will pin the energies of others who have similar energies to our universe once it gets close to the desired universe. Vegeta, Videl, and Tien likely were touched by these energies and so it should find them."
Gohan nodded at the explanation, meanwhile, Goku just had a nervous smile as he didn't know most of what Bulma just said.
"So we're basically doing a shot in the dark?" Gohan
said, sighing as he closed his eyes in exasperation.
"It's okay, Gohan. We'll find them," Goku consoled as he put a hand on Gohan's shoulder. Looking towards Bulma he put a hand on the side of his face to hide his expression from Gohan and whispered to Bulma, "He really misses Videl."
"Dad!" said a blushing Gohan.
"Right, I'm not giving up until the system's ready, you guys," said Bulma.
"Yeah, but here's the thing. Who should be the first to go?" pondered the full-blooded Saiyan.
The three thought for a moment on who should go and Bulma and Goku came to a decision as Gohan still pondered, "Gohan!"
Gohan gained a look of surprise, "Me?"
"Yeah," Bulma said. "You're the only one that was able to understand my blueprints for DIM besides my dad. Not to mention you're one of the strongest alongside Goku. If something happens you'll be able to defend yourself and repair the machine."
Gohan once again nodded at the explanation, while Goku grew a look of disappointment.
"Man, if I could travel instead I totally would get to fight a bunch of strong guys!" Goku whined.
"You'd probably make it worse with your battle addiction, Goku!" yelled Bulma.
Goku had a disappointed expression as he sighed, accepting Bulma's critique, "Yeah, but man, Vegeta must be having the time of his life if he's somewhere where he can find stronger guys."
DC Space
Connor breathed hard and his sweat dripped from his body like a fountain as he kept struggling to complete his exercises. He slowed a bit, but soon saw a ki blast shot at his previous position as Vegeta yelled for Connor to keep running at his regular constant pace even with Connor's exhaustion.
Ever since they had arrived Vegeta had immediately started his training and it made Connor ache more just thinking about his first days on this planet.
Connor had been tasked to do a set of exercises and their intensity was only increased over time. He was told to run across the grassy fields, to keep climbing as he scaled sharp mountains, causing his hands to blister, swim faster as he raced away from predators in the waters, and lift large rocks that were around him and run with them.
Some distance away, Connor noticed a familiar face, Tosca, and waved. However, Connor immediately stopped waving as a ki blast once again raced by as Vegeta shouted for him to remain focused. Connor's bones almost wanted him to go back to doing more common exercises under the intense gravity.
After hours more of the grueling training, Connor finally managed to complete it for the day, falling to the ground on his back as he panted and stared up into the green sky above him. Soon enough, a group of children, led by Tosca, walked up to his lying position with a bowl of water and an assortment of fruits.
The boy, Tosca, at least that he called himself when he pointed to himself, was a native of this world. There was intelligence on this planet. A humanoid people with yellow skin and blue eyes. The people were curious, but cautious and the people made that apparent as they had approached their ship the day they arrived. They had arrived with weapons and cautious looks, but Vegeta had easily dispersed them with little trouble, causing hostility.
Luckily, Connor was able to calm down the situation between the people and Vegeta as he came forth with gestures to convey their peaceful intentions, even as Vegeta laughed that they would be the ones who would lose in a conflict.
They seemed to be a peaceful people, with their own way of life similar to humans involving trade through an established currency and their own language.
After their first interactions with the people of this world. They showed more peaceful intentions, even towards Vegeta, giving them food that satisfied the Saiyan, and that was enough to be put in a more favorable light in Vegeta's eyes.
After all, one way to get on a Saiyan's good side was through food.
Connor looked at the children with a smile as they smiled, showing the teeth of a herbivore as they all began to eat the assorted fruits.
"Thanks, guys," Connor said, giving them a thumbs up as he smiled back. They did the same gesture, copying him.
After they finished their meals, the children began to push Connor to stand, and one of them decided to go on a ride and get on his shoulders as they laughed, pretending they were flying. The other children laughed as they led him, once again, into the city of their people.
It was an interesting sight. Some of their architecture was even made of stone and metal similar to Earth. There was even an outside market as he passed with the children laughing around him.
Some of the girls of the city even waved at him with blushes on their faces while Connor waved back to be polite.
Vegeta watched on, as Connor was led further into their town by the children. As night fell he came to a conclusion on how to help Connor's progress. They had been training for just over three weeks, but Vegeta noticed that while Connor's ki was rising steadily it seemed that he couldn't consciously manipulate his ki even as it rose a bit day-by-day. He would need something to bring his progress forward. A trigger.
Vegeta thought to when he had seen others unlock their power, and his mind shifted to a certain hybrid of another kind, Son Gohan… his wild emotions. Vegeta smiled sinisterly as he came to his conclusion. The sun fell over the horizon, leaving stars visible among the dark as Connor and the children ate their foods and laughed together. Meanwhile, Vegeta looked on and let out a dark laugh as he came to an idea he should've thought of before.
Superman walked across the Watchtower and looked out into the depths of space as he thought about the words he had given Vegeta. What he would become to Connor..
He smiled as he looked at faraway stars and galaxies and grew a smile on his face. He had always wanted someone he could relate to, someone that he would have grown up with, as many only-children do as they watch other families with multiple children instead of just the one.
His smile turned into a frown as he remembered the way he had treated Connor. He treated him with a distance between them, and from his talk with Vegeta and on other days, Bruce, he had come to the conclusion to not see Connor as a clone, but a brother.
So focused on Earth, he didn't hear the sound of the footsteps approaching him until they came close enough. He looked to his see Diana, who greeted him with a smiling nod. "Kal," Diana greeted as she stood to his side.
"Hey, Diana. Just uh… thinking."
"About Connor, I presume?" Diana asked.
"How did you-" Superman let out.
"I'm not blind, Kal. As are many of the other Leaguers."
"Heh, guess my senses aren't as good as I thought. I was just thinking about what I… haven't been to Connor. I've been treating him like a creature, keeping him away with a stick, now I see I have to treat him like a brother. Good thing I've always wanted siblings as a kid," Superman said.
"Your bond, and yourself will become stronger from this. As my own bond with my sisters made me stronger, Clark. I'm also sure you may have some competition in the future with Vegeta training Connor. You might wanna start pushing yourself. In fact, why don't we start right now, after all, you haven't trained in some time?" Diana said.
"Hmm, fine. Though, I haven't been slacking since you and Batman taught me more in martial arts, so don't think this is going to be easy," Superman said with a smirk.
"I wouldn't dream it to be," Diana with a smile, excited at the prospect of their spar.
She began to walk towards the sparring room with great excitement, but Superman stood still for a few moments just before he started to follow and looked to the stars.
'I'll be someone better, Connor. I won't look away from you anymore,' Superman thought. Then. he walked away as he went on to spar with one of the most dangerous warriors of Earth.
Days Later
After spending some time in the city of the native world, Connor had decided to go to sleep, tired enough to want to sink into his bed on the ship.
Connor was suddenly awakened by a faint sound of something in the distance. He walked out of the ship, and his eyes widened as he saw an explosion in the distance… right where the city was.
"No!" Connor yelled as he began to run, faster than most humans even with the red sun glaring down on him.
Minutes later, he came upon the village, seeing people run in fright as the explosions continued around them. Buildings crumbled, the ground shook, and shockwaves were felt as Connor looked around. He saw a mother and her young child about to be crushed by a large piece of debris from the large homes around them. Moving forward he grabbed the mother and child and pushed them out of the way before they were harmed.
"Go! Get out of here!" Connor yelled, knowing they could probably guess what he was inferring, and he guessed right as they started to run from the chaos.
Looking around, he finally saw what was causing this. A figure in the sky glowing a golden yellow. He could only make a silhouette of the figure as the glow masked their body enough to hide the figure's features, and just as he saw him a blasts of golden energy came from the figure that rocketed towards the ground towards another building, rocking the ground and the light made Connor shield his eyes.
The hybrid grew enraged and grabbed debris the size of a small car and chucked it. "Hey, asshole!" he yelled, as he threw the debris at the figure, but it was destroyed with another blast.
Suddenly, the figure suddenly shot towards the ground and sped around the village, releasing blast after blast faster than Connor could see.
His ears then picked up a familiar sound screaming. "Tosca?" Connor questioned, looking around and noticed the golden figure had stopped, right in front of Tosca.
"Tosca!" Connor shouted, running towards him. He noted the figure lift his hand and time seemed to stop as a blast came from his palm then engulfed Tosca in a flash of light.
The shockwave knocked Connor back, and he coughed as he got back up, seeing the spot where Tosca had been. There was nothing left, not even ash as Connor looked.
The figure laughed and his voice boomed deeply, "I thought you were Superman, but you can't save those that truly matter to you. A fake… you'll always be in his shadow, and here I thought you'd be a challenge. You're just a gnat." Turning around with his back towards Connor he let out his last words, "You'll never be anything, just like that weakling that's less than ash."
Soon, the figure slowly rose into the air, but Connor didn't notice as he looked towards where Tosca once was and the city around him as he saw the destruction around them.
'You'll never be him,' Connor heard in his mind. 'You won't save those that matter to you,' a memory of an impaled M'gann came into his mind, 'Not worth anything, just like the little boy who isn't even ash.'
"No!" Connor shouted as she ran, but he didn't run away from the figure, instead he ran towards the floating golden villain. "Tosca wasn't less than ash! His life meant something! All of them!" he yelled, and he was so angry that as he jumped far towards the figure he didn't notice his body float through, unperturbed by gravity, a soft aura of ki coming from his body that lifted him off the ground.
"These people had lives and it meant something! I won't let them die for nothing!" he yelled as he rose hundreds of feet into the air and threw a punch, hitting the golden figure in the face. Immediately, the golden aura dissipated… revealing Vegeta. Now sporting Connor's fist impacting his smiling face.
"Well look at you go," Vegeta said. "It's a good thing I did this, otherwise we wouldn't have made this rapid progress. You're even floating."
Connor's anger made him ignore Vegeta's words as he continued to try hitting Vegeta, but his flight was that of an amateur as his anger pushed him forward.
"How could you do it!?" Connor shouted. "All those people, I won't let y-"
"The boy's alive," Vegeta stated, making Connor stop in his tracks.
"What?" Connor said, and as his anger subsided he realized he was floating hundreds of feet above the ground. "Woah… how? Ahh!" Connor shouted as he started to fall rapidly, luckily the Saiyan grabbed him before he hit the ground.
"Wha? How is Tosca alive, Vegeta? Along with all those other pe-"
"They're right there," Vegeta said as he pointed several miles away, where numerous natives of the village were standing.
"How are they alive?" Connor asked with shock.
"Speed. I simply moved faster than you could see and moved the people out of the town. Weren't you surprised they all managed to escape in such a short time?" Vegeta questioned.
"And Tosca?" Connor asked again, now looking at the surviving villagers and as they floated down to the ground.
"See for yourself," Vegeta said, and Connor heard the sound of a familiar voice, seeing Tosca race up to them.
"Speed?" Connor asked.
"Speed," Vegeta confirmed.
Looking away from Connor, Vegeta flew into the air at incredible speeds and used his strength to rip one of the many blue crystal mountains out of the ground then proceeded to tear it apart with telekinesis, similar to a certain bio-android who made a tournament ground.
Coming back to the city he carried the parts of the mountain with his strength and kept tons of the other parts of crystal in a telekinetic hold.
Superboy looked surprised, not used to seeing Vegeta use physics abilities in such a way.
"Stop gawking and come on, boy," Vegeta commanded. "I told these people that we would repair their homes after what I just pulled off. You'll be helping."
Just like that? You just destroyed their village. How did you even tell them? They don't know our language." Connor inquired.
"Telepathy is a way to speak even without language, as long as the one you connect with has sentience you can practically speak to anyone. Now get started, we're going to finish this in a few hours. Then, we'll do your final test before we leave this world."
After some time repairing the numerous homes and buildings, the native people of this world waved to the two aliens of their world as they zipped around the city. Soon, as Vegeta said, in a few hours they were done with the repairs.
"Come on, boy. Let's get started," said Vegeta.
After walking back to their training grounds Connor was ordered by Vegeta to do his regular routine, but this time with a set of wrist and ankle weights to hold him down, but luckily Connor's kryptonian physiology allowed him to carry the weights better than a regular human.
He started with his routine but even with his training over the days this routine was easily the hardest he had ever done. Hearing cheers he saw the group of children, and even a few adults, goading him on as he kept working. He tried to ignore them as he had before, but a smile came onto his face as their cheers echoed in his ears.
Vegeta noticed this and his eyes narrowed, and gained an idea. Connecting his mind he created a link with Connor.
'Connor, think of that emotion you felt when you fought for them. That is a feeling that will give you strength,' Vegeta said into Connor's mind.
Connor slowed for a second before looking at the people and then delved into his memories just some days before. When he punched Vegeta. 'All of them!'
Suddenly the ground beneath Connor's running feet started to crack as he felt his strength grow, even with the red sun glaring down on him.
Vegeta gained a small smirk as he saw an aura coming over Connor. One that was barely noticeable unless you looked closely.
After that moment, Connor ran far faster than before and his breathing became more stable, almost easy to breath as he ran. The crowd noticed the change in effort, and they cheered him on all the more. He ran across the fields faster than the wind, climbing the crystal mountain with his hands now not blistering when he grabbed a jagged edge, swam fast enough to leave the predators in the water dozens of feet behind him, and lifted a rock bigger than himself and ran with it up a steep hill with ease.
Even after all that, Connor felt he could do more. He looked down at his hands, now noticing the glow around himself. Vegeta came up to him to meet him.
"How does it feel?" Vegeta questioned.
Connor looked at the Saiyan, still feeling the high from consciously willing forth his ki, "Amazing."
"Come now. You're going to rest for the rest of the day as a celebration. Then tomorrow, we will try it," Vegeta said.
"Flight?" Connor said.
Vegeta nodded to the question, but then stepped aside as they were led by the people into their city again.
As the sun fell once more, the people of the city came to the middle of their streets where tables were set up for hundreds of feet straight. Numerous fruits and bowls of water ordained the tables.
The people gave him small gifts, such as a necklace decorated with the blue crystals of the mountains, numerous fruits, which Vegeta liked, a bag of their currency, which Connor remembered to be gold which could be useful as currency back on Earth, more fruits, which Vegeta liked, pounds of vegetable, and more fruits, which Vegeta liked.
Connor smiled seeing the people of this world happy, and was surprised when he saw a symbol on flags that the children had made. The symbol of the house of El, most likely something they remembered from seeing his shirt at a previous time.
"See," Vegeta said to his side as his mouth was stuffed with fruit and he got it down with water. "Superman isn't the only one that can inspire hope. You have just the same capacity as well, even when you're not Superman."
Connor nodded at Vegeta's words, but his smile became sad at those words, as he truly didn't believe them. The night went on, but after some time, Vegeta and Connor came back to their ship a significant distance away. Connor went to sleep with hopeful thoughts, but his mind couldn't get Vegeta's words out of his head.
The next early morning, Vegeta stood on the grasslands as Connor stood up straight, waiting for Vegeta's words.
"Now, when one wishes to fly, they must have control over their ki, which you do to some extent. If you're going to fly you must use your energy to lift you up. It will be a similar feeling as when you punched me. Now, begin," Vegeta said.
Connor closed his eyes, remembering that feeling as he had when he summoned his ki over his skin. That feeling of being lifted subconsciously as he wanted to protect the village, to avenge Tosca. Connor felt his ki come over him, but didn't feel the same exact feeling as when he flew. Something was still holding him back.
He grunted, and the grass around him actually started to sway from the winds produced from his body, but he still didn't lift above the ground, and veins on his face became visible as he concentrated further. Finally, he opened his eyes with sweat from the concentration and breathed harder than before.
"I… I can't. Why can't I fly?" Connor said as he fell to his knees with a look of shame on his face.
Vegeta saw this and his mind shifted to his own words ten years previously, when he tried to attain the legend of the Saiyans, the Super Saiyan. He recognized the look of despair on Connor's face and put a hand on his shoulder.
"Do not give up, boy. You will gain flight. As I gained something that meant something to me," said Vegeta.
"Yeah, right! You're one of the most powerful beings around. What could you have wanted to gain?" Connor said in frustration.
With no words, Vegeta entered into his Super Saiyan form, showing Connor the familiar glow over his body.
"What is this?" Connor asked.
"This is a state I have wanted since I was a child. The legendary form of might, a Super Saiyan. Just as I trained to gain this form, you will train to gain flight. After all, it's a simple technique. Do not let this lack of ability lower your confidence, and strive to make it your goal and make further goals as your training continues," Vegeta said as he dispelled his form.
Connor looked at the ground, knowing Vegeta was right. Vegeta responded with a tone Connor hadn't heard before, softness, "Go tell them goodbye, and remember to gain strength to protect those around you, as you protected them. After that we will leave. The first part of your training is complete, so we have no need to stay on this world anymore."
Connor was confused until he looked a distance to the grasslands, noticing the people of the town coming towards them and waving to them with sad smiles.
He went up to them, knowing that they likely knew he was leaving because of Vegeta, and played games with the children as they tossed a ball they created with their world's materials.
After some time, Connor entered the League ship and waved goodbye as some of the children gave him a thumbs up as the ship soon left the atmosphere and headed back to Earth.
As they began to travel back to Earth, Connor asked Vegeta a question, ""Vegeta? How did it feel? When you felt you weren't enough when you couldn't become a Super Saiyan?"
Vegeta stood with his back to the wall and his eyes looking to the stars as they passed, "I kept training. I didn't give up, even when my bones were broken, my spirit scarred, and my mind slowly succumbing to the idea of surrender. At the end of it all, I didn't care anymore, and that feeling was what led me to finally attaining the form."
"... thank you, Vegeta. For all of this," Connor said.
"Don't thank me until you're able to fly over Superman's shadow. Also, you'll find him to be one you can rely on. A brother."
Connor raised a brow, "What do you mean, heh?" Connor chuckled without mirth. Last time I checked he didn't even want to look at me."
"He and I had a little talk before we left. He's come to a different perspective about you. I'll let him tell you himself," explained Vegeta. "Now, get some rest for the next couple days," Vegeta said as he went to his quarters.
Days Later
Superman stood once again on the Watchtower, knowing that Vegeta and Connor were to arrive back soon from Batman's updates. He breathed a sigh, actually feeling nervous, guess he'd just have to wing it like he always did.
With his super senses, his eyes caught the sight of the League ship long before some of the other Leagers did, and he flew towards the hangar.
It touched down quickly with a sense of grace. Its ramp came out, and Vegeta walked out, followed by Connor.
Once the two noticed Superman, they stopped. Vegeta and Connor looked at each other, nodding, then Vegeta began to leave as he flew away. Meanwhile, Connor stayed looking straight at Superman, and Superman looked back, and sighed as he finally knew what to do with the other Kryptonian.
"Hey… Connor," said Superman.
"Hey," Connor said back, still not moving his eyes.
"I…. would like to apologize for how I've acted. Guess I'm not as brave for coming to you and accepting you, as I should have, but that will be different from now on. I won't look away from you as a clone, but towards you as a brother," Superman said as he put a hand on Connor's shoulder in reassurance.
"Thank you. I guess my existence wasn't really… comfortable for you, but I'll do my best to be a brother. You better get ready when I fly over you, though. I'll be flying soon enough," Connor said with a laugh.
Superman laughed, "Don't worry. I'll be increasing the harshness of my own training. I've even been working on some kryptonian martial arts, so watch out."
"Right, I'll be watching, brother," Connor said, making Superman laugh even harder. They would have to get used to that.
Some dozen of feet away, Vegeta saw the interaction before huffing and walking away, an amused look on his face.
"You know, you make a better therapist than your appearance depicts," Vegeta heard and he recognized the voice, seeing Diana.
"I have my moments," Vegeta said.
"So it seems. Up for a spar?" Diana asked.
Vegeta smirked as he nodded, a thought going through his mind, 'Hmph, Kakkarot would have killed to come to this world. I hope you're jealous, Kakkarot.'
At that thought, a certain Saiyan in the multiverse sneezed.
Superman and Connor laughed as they traveled to the Zeta-Tube, but before they went through they both looked towards the Earth beyond the glass.
"Feels good to be home?" Superman asked.
"Yeah, I was getting a little homesick," said Connor.
Superman looked at Connor as the half-kryptonian kept looking on. "Connor," Superman said, causing Connor to look at him. "My name… is Clark Kent. Welcome to the family."
Connor looked at him in shock at being told his… brother's identity. Looking at… Clark, he walked forward and then gave him a hug.
Two of the last sons shared a brotherly embrace as their world shone on them from a distance.
Well, it seems Connor still needs some time before he can fly above the shadow of his brother. Hope you liked this chapter. I was going to make a two-parter but since I haven't uploaded lately I made this chapter quite big, nowhere near my bigger ones but still.
I may even give Connor a certain rival with their own strengths in different ways.
