The topic of conversation roots itself deep within the ways of human culture. To exchange knowledge from one being to another boiled down to the most simplest of actions that kept a healthy relationship to one's mind and the awareness of the world through communication. Anyone can pass along any single topic and have it processed by the listener to which a response usually followed after. From childhood to adulthood and everything in between humans relied on their sociability to relay whatever conjured up in the depths of their brains to the world around them. When the world evolved more methods of social communication made headlines and simplified the process even further which put everyone on the map to contact anyone they wished. More than ever people could share their thoughts, feelings, and next to everything else with anyone they chose. Positive or negative, voices will always be heard.
However, not every topic settles in with a target individual and sometimes it doesn't settle with a general consensus. Reactions always varied but typical generalization existed to stabilize a certain stereotype. For certain demographics, one could rebuke something as simple as undergarments and sewer work while others would shoo away religion and the dark depths. While no certain group remained identical, many topics never see the light of day because of the ways those groups worked. They provided their reasons and solidified their statures toward their ideal thought processes that passed down to the ones around them. The ways of the human mind reached infinite potential that reached an apex into a personality that barred images that conflicted with their perfect world.
One could define the concept of the living and the dead as one of those rebuked topics. The inevitable end of one's mind and body to the overall consensus potentially streamlined an immense worry over whether or not one could succumb to such a fate in a short time frame. Certain beliefs often softened the blows but for the most part everyone kept their mouth shut to not possibly upset anyone. Very few actually embraced the two worlds and welcomed the topic into their lives which gave them up to stand out in various communities. However, it only got them cast aside by the communities they lived in despite the freedom to act how they pleased. Whatever ideal world lived on in everyone's heads, when it came to life and death the general accord ruled it out of normalcy.
The town of Brighton would have followed without a hitch if the rumors and musings didn't exist. What started as a nice town of people the minded their own business ended up slightly disrupted when the tales of ghosts and haunts littered the streets. While none have provided irrefutable evidence the tales always got riddled with details that made others' hair stand on end. They always loomed in the background even when they remained harmless and never reached the general populous to an extreme degree. Despite the tall tales, everyone maintained generally decent lives as they walked around and did their business. If anything the stories went largely ignored and only remained riddled about by the kids on the playground to potentially scare others for easy lunch money.
Too bad it never struck a chord with someone like the eleven year old Nancy. She lived in Brighton her whole life and had to subtly adapt to such tales. While she had a loving mother, father, and older sister she struggled to maintain a social life as it shackled her into the confines of her own self. All of it came to a head when she learned about the deep darkness that clouded her mind with dense matter. Her maladjustment to the world around her all pointed toward the mental disability of autism, which she formally got diagnosed with at the age of two and made sense for her parents. She went to multiple groups and therapists for social skills that worked for some of it, but not all. Nobody could fully understand everything that filled her head and the roadblocks she faced every day. Because of the filter put over her when she tried to socialize she fell to the bottom of the ladder when it came to recognition, which to her came as a blessing in disguise. The less she got noticed the less she would have to converse with anyone and potentially lock up in place. If someone she didn't know came up to talk to her she would immediately clam up and refuse any further prodding of her mind. At certain times she would even curl up to block out any visuals and retreat into the confines of her brain for any type of satisfaction to calm down. When it reached a fever pitch she would completely break down as anxiety took over which made her breath short out into spasms and her chest to ache. She usually required her parents to pick her up if it ever happened which for someone like her came up as a pretty uncommon occurrence. She now stood at eleven years old and still was prone to unpredictability just from someone's attempt to strike up a conversation with her. Unless she knew the person to near perfection, Nancy didn't feel safe.
She already attended the town's middle school for a year or so and for the most part she got pretty steady grades. Because she usually never wanted to strike a conversation with someone it left her focused more on academic work that kept her on track. While she didn't pertain herself as the smartest person in school she performed well enough that solidified her records pretty high up. Nobody in school particularly batted an eye in her direction anyway and it calmed her down enough to not suddenly burst into a nervous wreck. From the very few students that did get a chance to talk about her they almost seemed like she should have went to the grade above her due to her smarts even though her parents wanted her to progress like everyone else. If she did get sent above her current grade she would probably be the youngest there anyway and anything to potentially set off her bottled up worry would not sit well with her family.
She steadily walked up to her locker with books in her hands and undid the lock to open it up. She gazed over the mirror on the inside as she carefully placed the books in a sturdy row. Despite her unsteady record it warmed her up a bit to see herself in a nice spirit. Her long brown hair mixed with some blue dye at the tips potentially captivated certain folks if she insisted to always stay in the spotlight which never happened. She adored her hazel colored eyes and blue nail polish like gemstones and she picked out her gray colored shirt with a decal of a medieval sturdy shield out herself. Her mother particularly took notice of her pastel colored miniskirt before she left and her black and white sneakers complemented herself quite nicely to her father. She never desired to appear like the next big superstar or idol but she probably could pull it off if her disability didn't wither her down constantly.
"Just a few more classes before lunch. Keep at it and you'll make it through." Nancy thought to herself as she picked out a specific book for her next class. She kept herself quiet to not catch the attention of any passerby that walked by her locker but other than that she tried to keep a leveled head to the best of her ability.
Of course she couldn't predict the face behind the locker door once she closed it. She yelped for a second before she picked up on who stopped by.
"Still up and running for now, huh Nanse?"
Her mind calmed down before she replied back.
"Oh, uhhhhh, yeah. I got history class next."
The other girl leaned against the locker next to Nancy's. Out of everyone in the town that could potentially muster past Nancy's social issues and become her best friend, a dark goth girl would almost never cross the common mind. Of course she had her times with her more than others that slowly got Nancy to warm up to her and her tendencies. She originally met her around first grade and shared similar issues with the world around them. They wanted to always have time with themselves and nobody else which made them look like outcasts to some at the time, which slowly progressed into an actual friendship. She practically had to pull her open to get through to her, but once Nancy grew curious over all of the black and the lifestyle she went through on a daily basis it hooked her in. Since then only she could truly get in Nancy's shell and somewhat get her to calm down at times.
Her name? Katrina.
She lived in a somewhat isolated family with a mother and father and two older siblings that already entered high school. Because of that she spent most of her time reading novels to herself while her siblings studied up for the higher grades. She especially liked one that talked about a descendant of a clan of werewolves which fed into her fascination with the grim and dark. Since those times she took on a hobby of design work that dealt with all things goths strive for and even though she had the same age as Nancy she did her homework and learned all of the philosophies and tricks to get a good design down. Her drawings especially stood out as some of her most detailed works to date, although she did like to dabble into makeup every now and then to always stay on top. It also meant she read up on all of the tall tales and studies about the darkness and even practiced them on occasion, although obviously not to the extreme. She tried to raise the dead, contact spirits, and even summon a demon at one point even though they gave her…less than stellar results. As such she tended to act serious when it came to her methods which Nancy chose to not question her on to save her skin. Her usual attire consisted of a black shirt with a decal on the front that showed a large bat against the waning moon and a miniskirt colored dark purple. She humorously won them in a raffle after she begged for her mother to participate for better chances, which paid off for her in the end when she won them. Her sneakers showed off a sleek gray with a black lightning bolt through the center while her entire face told Nancy everything she needed to know about her lifestyle. She purposefully colored her skin to appear pale along with her black eye shadow and fingernails. She didn't prefer to put on lipstick but she did make her black hair long and flat. Since her hair covered her ears she never bothered with any type of accessories like earrings. While she had her moments in the dark, Katrina wouldn't leave Nancy anytime soon.
Nancy watched Katrina snicker a little upon hearing where she had to head to next.
"Well that doesn't sound the least bit interesting. I thoroughly expected you to completely break these first couple of days. You finally pulling through for once?"
"Umm…not exactly." Nancy answered. "I reached my limit when I had to introduce myself to the home room class and just barely held myself together. I silently wept to myself after…as I couldn't take the pressure."
"Ouch, that sounds brutal." Katrina said. "You really should have gotten an invitation to where I'm at as I don't exactly get noticed at all since, you know, I want to stay in the dark."
"Yeah, don't we all." Nancy said as she silently shook her head. "If anything I'm glad nothing crazy happened so I don't completely overload on everything. You know how I go with those types, right?"
Katrina tilted back and forth and drummed her fingers together.
"Weeeeeeeeell…some stuff may have happened behind your back. You probably haven't heard of them yet."
"Really? What?!" Nancy spoke in a bit of a rush while her heart accelerated.
"Easy, easy there. You didn't miss anything terrible." Katrina replied. "Just another new student carrying some strange occurrences around her. I actually haven't seen her myself, but color me interested for when I finally do."
"You and your tendencies as usual I see." Nancy said with a warm smile. "I guess I probably should have expected something during the first few days. Anything else?"
"Not much, other than the fact that she's been going around every nook and cranny to meet every single student here." Katrina responded. "You haven't met up with her yet, right?"
"I…don't think so?" Nancy said with a couple of nervous shakes. If Katrina didn't lie right in front of her face there stood a chance that the girl with the strange occurrences around her will head for her next, whether she wanted her there or not. She could already feel her heart rate increase from the mere thought of a confrontation and she knew what would happen next. Katrina only heard details from others so she lacked the full picture of what the new girl looked like, so Nancy would have no idea who to look out for until it came thumping at her door. She really wished to always have the power to go invisible for then she could avoid everyone for the sake of her sanity.
Katrina could obviously see the signs coming and immediately interjected her display.
"Relax Nanse, it's not that big of a deal. Just hold yourself together for a while and soon it will go by without a hitch. She probably doesn't know you exist in this school and completely missed you because of it. Just keep your cool, okay? Remember our necklaces?"
Katrina's latter question managed to barely pull Nancy out of it. Her symptoms subsided as she looked at her friend in the eyes. She still shook a little but had enough to weakly nod her head and reach down inside her shirt. Katrina also did the same and at around the same time the two brought out a pair of two necklaces with different features. Around the same time when the two first started to understand each other better Katrina wanted to create something to symbolize it in physical form and to always have a reminder that they always had their backs. She spent a couple of days attempting to make it "just right" but kept Nancy in the dark about most of the process. Nancy only knew that she wanted to potentially use vampire blood to seal them together and a femur of a black cat to potentially bring good luck. As the days went by longer than what Nancy predicted Katrina finally got back to her with a pair of necklaces she crafted herself in her own way. She crafted Nancy's in the shape of a stereotypical bed sheet ghost with googly eyes while she made hers in the style of a long winged bat with bloodthirsty fangs. She thought a typical ghost suited Nancy quite well since she never wanted to get noticed in public and always desired to go invisible when things got troublesome. She made the bat side for herself since she always wanted to suffer a bite that would transform her into one just like in the movies. Her statements claimed that the two worked together to bring terrors in the night which complemented their friendship even though Nancy finds worry and fear all too often.
Once the two got their accessories out they clicked them together from their backs, which Katrina purposefully put together, before they uttered a little chant with a certain chime to it.
Up, down, left, and right,
Bats and ghosts go rule the night.
Separate, they writhe and wiggle,
But together, everyone starts to jiggle.
With the dark ablaze and people fasting,
Their friendship will remain everlasting.
Nancy weakly smiled over to Katrina who equally smiled back as they unhinged their necklaces. Her best friend came up with those verses specifically only for the two of them and Nancy found it kind of charming. She still remarked often that she had a long way to go when it came to literary works, but the short chant provided a good jump start.
"Umm, thanks Katrina. I kind of needed some comfort there." Nancy said.
"No problem Nanse. I always have your back you know." Katrina answered. The two then heard the bell ring overhead which signaled the next class. Nancy shuddered for a second while Katrina started to head off in another direction, presumably to her next class.
"Just so you know, I've already went through my lunch period and if you're lucky when it's your time you might get to see the vice principal's ginormous birthday cake."
"Really? How big?" Nancy asked.
"Oh, maybe a couple of stacks or so. Apparently she got a bit stingy with all of the small cakes and ordered something huge. Something about it has put her in high spirits and now she won't shut up about it."
The next few classes went by at an average pace for Nancy. She sat near the back like always and tried her hardest to remain inconspicuous to everyone around her. History had her undergo a lesson about Ancient Rome and Art had her study up on the various types of paints used in high profile works. As boring of subjects they were to a majority of the school Nancy didn't mind them as much since she usually paid attention to writing down all of the required facts in her notes. If anything she enjoyed the peace and quiet compared to the noisy hallways which calmed her down enough to focus her attention like any loyal student. Some could label her as a teacher's pet if she always wanted to remain near the front of the class, but due to her shyness and easy embarrassment those remarks never went her way. Just another day in the early school year for someone like her.
After those few classes her lunch period finally arrived. Her mother always made sure to pack in some type of sandwich, either peanut butter and jelly or lunch meat and mayonnaise, along with a bag of fruit snacks and a juice box to keep things simple and easy to go through. Nancy didn't mind it as she liked the simplicity and gave her something to not wrap her head around. The seats around the cafeteria already started to fill up by the time she arrived which almost covered her vision about where to sit. Preferably she would find an open spot not populated too well and if she had to sit next to someone she would clam up and pay attention only to herself to not lose her sanity. She didn't appear to notice any type of large cake that Katrina talked about earlier which probably meant they wheeled it out already in case of any picky fingers. From what she heard from her it made sense to hide it away, although she would have appreciated at least one peek just to know all of the hubbub about it. Even so, she required a place to sit down to eat.
She lightly grinned once she noticed a table next to a door near the back that lay empty with a couple of free seats. Once she made her way silently through the crowd of kids she sighed deeply to herself and sat down with a humble sense. Her gaze across the room with all of the other kids wandered about as they put their attention to their own agendas which got her a little depressed that she lacked the required skills necessary to communicate properly with anyone other than ones close by her. Her qualities made up for some good topics if only she could get past the filter over her face. Katrina hardly got noticed and even she understood the necessities to progress a normal conversation…in her weird and dark methods she went for. Sometimes she wished she could have been normal thinking like other kids instead of being a coward that failed against the bare essentials of social life.
She silently shook off the thought as she looked inside her brown disposable bag and took everything out. Like all of the usual stuff her mom packed a sandwich of lunch meat and mayonnaise followed by a pack of fruit snacks and a grape juice pouch. Nothing too complicated, but Nancy enjoyed it nonetheless. Her mom even packed them inside little plastic bags for maximum freshness and efficiency.
"Mom always knows best." Nancy thought to herself as she pulled out her sandwich first. She set her attention over to it and took a few bites to delectable results. Her mom must have went with the brand she enjoyed the most as she felt herself salivate for more. After a few more bites she took a break from it and went for the fruit snacks. It took a bit of effort to open but once she did she saw the gummy shapes filled with delicious sugar and desired them. She wasted no time popping one into her mouth before she went for another. Simplicity at its finest and she loved every second of it.
Her alone time always remained as some of her most precious moments, but she was so absorbed into it that it almost came as a surprise for a certain noise to hit her ears. Her heart became stagnant and nearly all of her actions ceased. She heard THAT sound. When it bestowed its presence upon the young girl it always meant one particular action she never wanted to occur, let alone next to her. She may have gotten lucky with no one else the first couple of days but clearly nothing lasted forever. The paralyzing gaze bolted her to her seat and stapled her to her food below. She couldn't bear to make contact unless she asked for the moment to go on for longer. All of her horrors hovered over her head and heckled at her to make a move while she sat there helpless. Her will to cry out drained from her face in a refusal made against her. The underworld would finally break loose.
"Ummmm, hi there. I haven't seen you around these last few days. What's your name?"
Her words inadvertently stuck daggers into Nancy's back. Some dug into her throat and prohibited speech from her end. Her eyes stayed pinned to her food and refused to move any further to the unworthy deities that controlled her every move. She barely caught the details of the other girl from the corner of her sight as the horrors continued. Nothing but a girl with a nervous and warming smile took a seat right next to her, and at first glance she seemed like nothing spectacular. Her dark brown hair came up a bit short but had a some type of pigtail near the top for some kind of stylistic choice. She wore a faded blue vest with some kind of button near the collar and a white undershirt to complement it, at least from how Nancy saw it. Her miniskirt contained a multitude of colors with patterns of zigzag lines and other shapes that made it stand out from other kinds Nancy saw out in the marketplace. The worried one dared to not pay attention to anything under it, but she did take notice of the girl's colorful sneakers that got plastered to the brim with pink and yellow all over. They never tickled Nancy fancy, but she had to admit that preferences vary from person to person. Her demeanor seemed okay even if she unknowingly prodded for answers out of the secretly cowering girl. She even appeared to stand a bit taller than her, likely from an older age. She fit the bill for a normal everyday girl that wanted friends to any sane person, but for Nancy she only saw a wolf in sheep's clothing.
Nancy's mouth remained shut and refused to open far beyond the reaches of reality, which prompted the other girl to speak again.
"Oh, well, I'll introduce myself first then. I'm Molly, or more specifically Molly McGee. I just moved here a few days ago and wanted to meet all of the locals, so…why not start at school, right? You know any cool places around here?"
She rejected anything that tried to pry her shell open. Molly received nothing but silence from the scared girl.
"Ohhhhhhkaaaaaay. Well, if you noticed any weird occurrences around me don't worry about it. I've…got some complications here and there but you seem like a nice girl. At least tell me your name, please?"
She heard everything but never reacted. So Katrina's info about someone who wanted to know everyone in the school and had some strange events happen around her all pointed to the girl named Molly McGee. Any attempts to try and compute the information fell to the ground in a fiery pit from the sheer amalgamation of social misunderstandings boggled up in her brain. She couldn't even shake her off either as her whole body froze in place and boiling pressure rose through her pores. No amount of friendly remarks cracked her in the slightest.
She heard Molly speak again.
"Is…is something wrong? You don't look so good."
She felt the rising fire reach her head.
"If something is wrong I'm all ears. I can help if you just tell me."
Eyes.
"At least tell me something. Do you not want me here?"
Right at the apex.
"Come on, at least tell me something to work with here!"
…
…
…
Enveloped completely.
"LEAVE ME ALONE!"
She finally burst. Her whole body took a few seconds to catch up and survey the damage. Her head bolted up and immediately turned toward Molly with eyes the size of dinner plates. Her hands instinctively covered her mouth as she found herself on her feet with a back as stiff as a steel pole. The rest of her lunch stayed on the table half eaten and Molly seemed to act just as stunned to hear the words come out of Nancy's mouth. Her outburst carried immense volume that caught some attention from other students close by and a decent distance away. She thrust a javelin in Molly's direction that quickly came with dire consequences.
Any sane person would have probably teared up just like Nancy, but for some reason Molly stayed pretty average although she did show a pinch of distinct sadness that Nancy felt from all over.
"Oh, so that's what's going on with you. I'm terribly sorry I gave you too much pressure, I never meant it, so I'll just, ummmmm…leave then. Well, uhhhhhh…good luck then I guess? Shoot, I shouldn't keep talking if I'm accidentally giving ammunition to the one next to-"
The next sequence of events went by so quickly that anyone could have blinked and miss it. Nancy may have taken into account the wet floor around her when she stood up as she could clearly see the sign that the janitor put up close by in bold black letters, but despite the large warnings either Molly didn't notice them or never cared in the slightest as the confines of the table around them contained just enough to trigger everything. Right as she placed her feet on the ground and stood up they immediately slipped downward and appeared to take her by surprise as her body careened right into the worrywart Nancy straight in the front. This made a domino effect where the force got Nancy to lose her balance as well and fall backward. While landing on a solid floor would inflict some type of injury that ended up as the luxury if it actually happened that way. Right as Molly pushed Nancy backward the doors next to their table opened up and revealed the one thing Katrina talked about that previously made its absence in the cafeteria. Nothing but tall pure white sugary goodness coated in delectable white coating akin to wedding cakes made its presence known to the entire room. It barely missed the top of the door's opening as what appeared as another teacher wheeled the whole thing into the room on a wheeling tray similar to the ones used in hotels. He clearly walked in with the whole dessert while he minded his own business only to witness a split second of the previous event before everything crashed down. Nancy never knew what hit her until…
SPLAT!
Molly hit the floor with lessened inertia since part of it went to Nancy but the unfortunate recipient felt the full brunt as her entire vision got covered in buckets of cake batter and frosting. Particles and confectioneries that littered the surface flew through the air around them and coated everything around it in frosting. One second the cake stood whole and the next it collapsed into large crumbs. If Nancy's outburst caught the attention of a couple students near them, her fall into the white delight captured everyone else and placed their eyes all on the aftermath.
Molly's pupils contracted a little as the teacher stood completely stunned since all of the hard work put into it now lay to utter waste. Nancy on the other had appeared knocked out for a quick second before she slowly came to with a couple of injured groans. Her entire body ached all over as frosting covered her from head to toe. The instant she tilted her head back up everything flooded back to her the moment she saw everyone in the room have their eyes at her.
All of it then followed up with a cacophony of erupting laughter that rang through her entire hearing.
It drained and hollowed her out in countless ways that kept her stuck to the spot. Everything she desired to avoid reared back in a boatload of punches before they released everything in one fell swoop. It left her in shambles to see reality cave in on her and leave nothing left but a husk. Every single spotlight imaginable shined on her with riddles of bullets that fired on her at every angle to make sure she never got out alive. She couldn't hear herself think and it pounded at her helpless self like a beating stick. She almost forgot that she even had a will of her own from all of demons relentlessly hurled everything they can to force her into paste. It didn't matter to them with their hive minded mentality and they clearly lacked the humanity to think twice before they acted. If the whole world had a vendetta against her they unleashed everything to rip her whole body apart and leave her for dead. Like piranhas in a feeding frenzy they ate her up and spat her bones to the bottom of the riverbed. She never hurt a butterfly her whole life but one had it out for her and dragged her into the depths of the underworld.
She barely picked up the sight of Molly with an expression she would never forget.
"No, I…I…I didn't mean to…"
Before Nancy knew it, she found herself act on her own as her arms and legs flailed around and her sight started to get foggy. Her first attempt only resulted in a slip back into the mess that only got the kids to laugh even harder. Her sight nearly got blinded by her sorrows that she almost missed Molly back on her feet with a hand out to possibly get help her back up. She blatantly ignored the offender's gesture before she faltered again to get back on her feet. The nonstop hecklers that hurled the worst at her put her instincts into an overload as she finally found her footing and watched herself bolt straight through the back door to anywhere else but the previous location. While the noises faded behind her as she ran through the halls, they still lingered in her head like cockroaches.
She would never live it down.
Nancy spent the entire rest of the day in one of the school's bathrooms and refused to come out. She couldn't even see anyone else other than teachers as they tried to come up with some last minute decision to replace the cake she ruined which did not sit over well with the vice principal. One quick detour to decorate the cake with some last minute pink frosting ended in tragedy after one single stunt in the cafeteria. As many of the teachers tried to rid every form of the cake out of Nancy, which from her type of fall almost completely covered her, the vice principal went on a nagging streak that gave the listeners headaches. Because of the material used in the expensive masterpiece that now lay in ruin, Nancy had next to no time to herself as all of it got spent from the immense cleaning the vice principal put on the teachers for some sort of punishment for not giving full attention to her exquisite confectionery. Nothing but intense yelling, scrubbing, and sorrow filled Nancy's senses and she didn't deserve any of it. To make matters even worse, her sinuses started to stuff up and her body felt weighted down right as she hit the restroom. The fact that she suddenly got sick served as the cherry on top throughout the whole ordeal.
To serve as one final sock to the teeth, the vice principal got fired right when school finished.
The trip back home didn't go by easily either. The closer Nancy got to home her condition only worsened as her skin got clammy and pale while her stomach gurgled like something stirred in there. Her parents tried to give her some medicine as she sat in the back seat of the car which performed next to nothing while she writhed and shivered from everything happening to her. She wanted to puke up a storm but willingly held it back until she got back home. The instant she set foot inside she rushed over to the nearest bathroom and heaved. The contents of her lunch all emptied out and flushed down the sewage pipes and she had more coming. She stayed near the toilet a couple more times before her parents instructed her to calmly get up to her room until she could fully recover. Her legs worked on their own as she weaved back and forth up the stairs to her comfy abode. She knew it only just started but also that some parts would never fully heal.
Once she opened the door she eyed down her bed slowly slogged over to it. For once she got to appreciate her choices of decor even though her body worked into overdrive from her sickness. While not the biggest room imaginable, it had just enough space to support her and another person, most likely one of her parents. She used to share it with her older sister until she moved out, so a large empty space was unoccupied over her bed from the bunk that once resided there. In some ways it broke her heart to know that one other person lived in their household, let alone someone very close to her, but she couldn't do anything but live with it. If anything it provided more space for her own personal objects, such as her stuffed animals and books of some of her favorite genres, even though it remained empty for the time being. She appreciated the choice of location for her bed, in the upper left corner, while the opposite side set a small wooden rack for some large picture books that required next to no knowledge on how to read to enjoy. Her favorites included ones with fairies and puffy animals that appeared like they wanted a big hug, which actually got to Nancy on a couple of occasions. As much as she didn't like to bring them up, she couldn't help but utter a few chuckles every timed she reminisced about them. A large beanbag chair in the shape of some type of cheeky white blob sat in the upper right corner next to the rack that Nancy got from one of her birthdays. It even squeaked out a small "motimoti" every time she sat in it that relaxed her enough to get out one of her books to read to herself. Her small closet set on the other side next to the rack covered with a long transparent curtain which contained neatly segmented spaces for each clothing item even if they usually got messed up later. On the opposite side sat one large bookcase filled with them from across the time frame, whether by her older sister when she was younger or as recently as last week. Her parents had a mindset where a good reading life lead to a prosperous education which Nancy didn't mind at all. If anything she rather enjoyed the hobby when it came to her favorite genres, and her beanbag chair helped with the relaxation portion to ease her into the mood. A couple of posters that detailed some of her favorite movies dotted around the walls that she always took the time to look at before bed due to all of the lush details. She certainly remembered the opening day of the one movie of the weird blob creature that mirrored the shape of her beanbag chair from how amazing it looked on the big screen. She ended up with that certain poster after that day too. Nothing but the pristine vision of a young girl echoed throughout the room and Nancy adored every second in it.
Right as she approached her bed her stomach acted up again which warranted another bathroom trip. She released a couple of hurls before she she emptied herself again and dizzily waltzed back to her room. Her dead eyes drearily gazed down at the covers before she slowly got under them and plopped her head on her pillow. To think the worst day of her life happened all because a supposed cheery and friendly girl sat down next to her and wouldn't get the message that she probably shouldn't continuously try to pry the worried one loose. Out of everyone in school to possibly walk up to her the one with all of the strange happenings and nonstop pestering ended up as the one with the straw to break the camel's back. After everything she put her through Nancy already never wanted to see Molly again. If she secretly desired to make her life miserable she hit the nail right in the sorry girl's head and made her point in one swift action. No matter how friendly she tried to act in the future any type of apology wouldn't be necessary after what she pulled back there.
She did find it odd at one point when she swore she saw something hovering next to Molly right as she bolted out of the cafeteria. In her very brief glances at her Nancy never recalled seeing something there until that moment occurred, although she passed it off as possibly the first symptoms of her sickness acting up.
Her immense pressure and condition eventually took their toll on her and completely knocked her out cold. She needed time to herself after those terrible times but it put her out so deeply that she never noticed the more drastic change her body underwent. First it started slowly but as time progressed the process picked up the pace. Her blanket gained a million more pounds while her head struggled to stay on top. She coughed a couple of times in her sleep but she suffered no type of pain at all through the whole thing. If she ever had a single wince to bring her awake she would have piled on so much panic on top of what she went through earlier she probably would knock herself out again from sheer emotion. As quickly as it progressed after a slow start the whole thing finished as Nancy seemingly vanished from existence. Theorists could go wild with their interpretations but they needed to not look far to figure out where she went…as she never left in the first place. If Nancy began with a bad day at school, her new condition added to it in some of the worst ways possible.
If Molly McGee stood a little bit taller before, she would completely eclipse her now.
Her symptoms compounded her into a wreck of complete sickness and with her shrinkage it made her completely helpless. It kept her sound asleep, but it didn't account for the fact that in her slow trudge to her bed she ended up near the edge of it with a steep fall to the ground below due to her new shrunken stature. She would have probably stayed that way and continued to sleep, which eventually her parents would potentially find out and help, but something else occurred instead. About ten minutes after her unaware miniaturization sounds of a car engine rang from the front of the house followed by some sort of door and walking steps noises. Another series of noises happened after, such as another door opening and a series of utterances too inaudible from her room to determine distinctly. A short time after the vocals some loud steps proceeded afterward which got louder with each one and ended right in front of Nancy's bedroom door. Once it opened it revealed who came to visit the household and if Nancy didn't have her head counting sheep she would have reacted in a much more negative manner.
She didn't arrive alone however, as something else floated around her head in a much different mood than her. If all of the stories around Brighton culminated into some type of apparition, it would end up as someone like the one around the young girl. Transparent body, eerie presence, and haunting aura all added up to form the common stature of a spirit that had some unfinished business on the planet before they could pass peacefully. As for the ghoul that stuck around her, first impressions told a different story. For the types talked about in stories it came at a rather stubby elevation, about around half of her full height, and a gaze from its black and yellow eyes that displayed everything but immense intimidation. While somewhat off for an entity of its type, its flat teeth, long round nose, and some type of tufts on its head provided some not so frightful information. If anything he looked like a spirit that just wanted to stay in one spot and never leave for anything. One side of it told one story while the other details contrasted against it. Some type of strange ghost provided its presence next to Molly and it clearly had some different stuff going for it.
Molly walked slowly into the room with a pinch of nervousness that didn't strike the ghost fancy.
"Ummmm, hello?"
She glanced around the room for a second before her uneasiness got replaced with confusion.
"Uhhhh, Nancy? Are you in here? Sorry for intruding, but I wanted to apologize for what happened. You here?"
"Clearly she's not here." the ghost said. "You dragged me out here for nothing. Why am I not surprised you-OH MY GOSH, IS THAT A MOTICHAN BEANBAG CHAIR?!"
The ghost wasted no time as he zipped over to the cushy chair and immediately sat right in the center. He let himself loose and relaxed as he heard the light "motimoti" voice soon after which Molly didn't appreciate.
"Scratch, we can't just make ourselves comfortable in Nancy's stuff when we're only supposed to be here for a few minutes!"
The ghost, named Scratch, opened his right eye from the chair and frowned.
"I didn't ruin that kid back there, YOU did, so I'm basically free to do as I please here…within the confines of you unfortunately."
"Hey, you were laughing at her expense back there too, so don't think you have a clean conscience from then." Molly retaliated. The ghost snickered for a little bit before he got back to her.
"Heheheheh, I couldn't help myself with such hilarity. Seriously, since when do setups like that ever come into play at the perfect time? They could have brought in a gigantic custard pie and a banana peel-"
"Scratch!" Molly interjected slightly sternly. The ghost opened both of her eyes which interrupted his relaxation time.
"I'm just saying it had all of the hallmarks. Besides, she couldn't have heard or seen me anyways."
"That doesn't solve the fact that she never had to go through any of it!" Molly answered. Her uptick mood she had back at school didn't show up, especially after what happened. Instead, she expressed severe guilt and worry and nobody could blame her if they heard about the incident. She wanted to make things right and amend things with the stricken party.
Scratch deeply sighed under his breath and pinched his forehead for a second before he put his arms back behind his head. He slumped back down into the couch and then replied back.
"Okay, okay, I'll give it a shot. Just…give me a few more minutes to appreciate this luxury! I've only seen these in sparse pictures and want to relish in the moment!"
"But we only have a few minutes here!" Molly answered before she deeply sighed. "…alright fine, but you better put your attention up high for when Nancy DOES show up."
Scratch smiled and closed his eyes while he let the beanbag chair do the rest. As much as she wanted to get the ghost to actually help for once, she had her priorities set on Nancy so she proceeded to check the room out just in case. She rummaged through her closet first only to find nothing and then went over to the bookshelves. With no Nancy in sight she placed her pink backpack next to the bed then made her way out of Nancy's room to check on the others, which would put some red flags of the hosts if they were actually in the building. While Molly searched next to every inch of the rooms of the household, Scratch paid no attention to anything other than the luxurious Motichan chair that nearly cast him asleep from how comfy the whole thing put on his nonexistent body. It basically acted like he sat in a dozen puffy clouds far beyond the reaches of something like massage chairs. He heard the rumblings of Molly as she made way through every space imaginable only to remind himself of where he sat and completely missed the calls.
After minutes and minutes of no results, Molly arrived back in the room almost out of breath. She made one last ditch attempt and walked over to the bed one last time. She first checked under it, where she saw a couple of dusty books but no Nancy, and once that failed she checked atop it and even lifted the covers off even though no distinct shape showed under them. If Nancy had her normal size Molly would easily seen her fast asleep, but because of how minuscule she shrunk Molly completely missed her at the edge of the bed. The normal sized girl shook her head before she plopped the blanket back on the covers which came with a pretty dire side effect to the one much smaller than her. Despite all of the noise that occurred between Molly and Scratch, Nancy remained peacefully out of it. Whatever sickness she caught knocked her out cold enough to avoid any potential noises that could possibly wake her up but it didn't keep her out from what Molly unintentionally afflicted. Her less than normal height also came at the expense of her weight, and at her shrunken size anything could knock her around and toss her into the air. While a simple act of placing a blanket back on a bed may have no major consequences to someone normal, for the shrunken Nancy it blew a strong gust of air on contact and sent her through the air. If the noises didn't wake her up before, the feeling of rushing air certainly did the trick. What started as a slow stir awake turned into surprise panic once her eyes blew open from the wind. She never even got the chance to scream either as she found herself in grim darkness. While Molly didn't usually consider herself absentminded at times, the one instance where it wouldn't have mattered much turned out as game changing when she left a portion of her pink backpack unzipped. What only may have been an inch high opening ended up as one big enough for the tiny Nancy to fall straight through. Her action left the shrunken one trapped inside.
What immediately started off as an immediate free fall came to a halt after Nancy smacked right into the bottom of Molly's backpack. Despite the horrible results to any normal sized person if they ever went through something similar, her tiny stature and less weight actually saved her from severe injuries. Too bad she only had a few seconds to realize it before she began to immensely panic. As she had no recollection as to the events after she fell asleep the unknown stared back and made her scream. The darkness made all of it worse so much so that it forced her into a curling fetal position for some type of attempt to compute where she now sat. Her day went from bad to worse and she had no idea how far down that would drive to.
Her intense worry almost completely shrouded the conversation above her.
"I don't understand. Her parents said she was here before they left and yet she basically vanished from existence the moment I come in!"
"After that hilarity you pulled for the masses I don't blame her. Girl probably wants nothing more to do with you and fled on a moment's notice. Sheesh, this situation really sounds like something I would do if-"
"Could you get out of that beanbag chair for once in your life and help out?"
"Once in an afterlife kiddo, for I'm a ghost after all. Besides, I already told you this doesn't concern me."
"You could have made this a whole lot easier if you helped out."
Nancy then heard a sigh from above her.
"Oh well, I guess she isn't here. We'll have to come by at another time to make things right. Hopefully she forgives me."
"Uhhhh, when did this become a 'we' thing? Since when did this suddenly become about me?"
"Just get out of that chair."
Nancy sat worried out of her mind in the darkness as her ears picked up some rather booming impacts. If she had the courage to speak up she could have potentially screamed something but her emotions held her back enough to make her croak under her breath instead. Her heart nearly stopped once the opening she came in through zipped up tight and covered the inside in complete darkness. She could do nothing but curl herself up even more and dig her head into her legs tightly as the gravity quickly shifted and started to bounce her around. She could hear some musings from outside but they remained gibberish under all of the constant noises from everything Molly contained in her backpack. Her body stood at such a small size that anything around her could crush her and she would go completely unnoticed by everyone that towered over her, especially to the one that started all of it.
She lacked the will to tilt her head back up from all of the misery she came across since morning as Molly inadvertently carried her to her own abode.
Every single sound that passed by her head went largely ignored as reality held everything against her. She thoroughly expected for one of Molly's supplies to inexplicably crush her with no consequence whatsoever. However, while her misery knew no bounds in all of her time inside Molly's backpack she got nowhere near close to coming into contact with anything greatly damaging. Even then, she wouldn't have known about it since her head stayed embedded firmly in her legs from sheer sadness. School remained completely tarnished and now Molly aimed to make it worse for her whether she meant to or not. To completely neuter and erase someone's existence by shrinking them seemed like something a mad scientist or evil villain would do, but Nancy knew Molly did it all for the sake of it.
After what seemed like an eternity to the shrunken girl, the movements suddenly ceased. Inertia kept her in the air for a second until she plopped back on the ground. She had no idea what Molly had in mind next, although she heard another voice close to her she couldn't deduce. Something rubbed her the wrong way wherever she ended up and the darkness inside Molly's backpack didn't help. She already ruined her life in one day so it only felt natural to grind her into the floor even further.
She immediately heard more voices above her. She knew one as Molly's but not the other.
"I'm still seeing a long face. Don't tell me you still feel guilty after that whole incident."
"Of course I still feel that way! I totally messed up back there and couldn't apologize since Nancy wasn't home! I have a burden on my back and CAN'T tug it off!"
"Finally, we can relate on something. How much do you want to bet that this might stick with you for the rest of your life? You know, that ONE itch you can never scratch no matter how many times you-"
"I'm already under a lot of stress right now Scratch, and I can barely hold myself together knowing that I already planted the ONE seed of becoming a social outcast in this jungle of a place! The first few days even went by SO well only to finally ruin it and put a kid on thin ice!"
"Wow…I guess you actually did screw up for once, although not in the way I expected. Great, now you got me eager to see what results would occur tomorrow when you head back there! I've always wanted to know how one gets stuffed in a locker…"
"Not helping! I…I need some time to think about this. I've wrung my brain out and need some time to myself. Besides, I have some homework to do."
"Finally, I've wanted to hear that all day!"
She had a lot to take in from Molly's words along with the other one she talked to. Nancy already bottled up so much misery since the moment at school so naturally it clouded some details behind painful memories. Even so, that didn't mean she failed to take notice of her surroundings at times and from what she heard it provided some implications. As much as she believed Molly to lack a heart the tone of voice and choice of words told something else. It almost sounded like she truly cared to make amends and put the incident behind her, although from the scope of the whole thing the ramifications probably went too deep to fully get over. She just moved after all so it almost sounded natural for her to always talk on and try to understand everyone in a new place, and even though Nancy stayed in Brighton her entire life she never had it in her to always have the mindset Molly displayed when she met up with her. In some ways their personalities clashed and contrasted with each other like two opposing forces that never saw eye to eye. While the revelation gave Nancy some context, she still found it hard to believe Molly as anything but someone out to get her.
She never had too much time to think about it when a streaming light emitted from above her. The zipper to Molly's backpack opened back up, which would have provided a decent escape route if something else didn't follow after. Before Nancy could think further she watched as one huge arm reached inside around where she sat curled up. Her packed feelings paralyzed most of her actions before she barely wriggled out of the way of the huge fingers. The darkness around her made it somewhat difficult to see anything but she didn't need it to know that she had to get away and possibly find an escape route. She accidentally hit a wall as she tried to find her way around while she witnessed Molly's huge hand just inches away from her. It grabbed some type of large square shape that Nancy couldn't fully make out, but she did see a faint outline around the hand of Molly's pink bracelet as it withdrew out through the opening above.
"Okay, now I just need a pencil here…"
Nancy almost lost it when she heard Molly again which immediately got followed up with another appearance of her massive hand. With next to her entire body locked up in a terrified stasis, Nancy did her best and nearly missed another grab from the giant girl's fingers. She lacked the courage to scream as she saw a large shadow feel across the floor for the pencil Molly needed which gave her enough to scramble backward and hit her head against another wall. It hurt quite a bit, but she had next to no time at all when the shadow approached her and made something under her move about into the air. Nancy fell off of the object and hit the ground only to see what objects she previously stayed dormant on. Nothing but a covered pair of green scissors disappeared through the shining opening which could have given her some fatal results if it remained open and Molly moved it in a way that would have closed it.
Molly never gave Nancy a chance to breath as the shadow of her hand entered the backpack once more. Nancy bopped her head against something that got quickly snatched up by the giant girl, which after a trip through the opening got revealed as a large loose eraser. The tiny one didn't know how much more she could take while Molly's hand entered again and made her evading game much more tiresome. Her legs almost gave out when the shadow nearly brushed up against her on the way to pick up another object which she noticed as a paperclip on the way up. She tried to find some type of hiding spot in the darkness and even used her own hands to feel around for something to potentially lay low until the whole thing progressed over her.
Too bad that became one big mistake.
The instant she put her hands forward to feel for something she immediately felt something a bit squishy that weaved through her fingers. Nancy's breath shortened as she tried to pry herself loose only to stay stuck. She couldn't even see what held her captive as the darkness covered it up but she wouldn't have to wait long to figure it out. Before she could continuously attempt to pull free the object that stuck to her shook uncontrollably. The shrunken girl could only look up and noticed the same large shadow gripped the top part of the object effortlessly and consequently have her along for the ride. She began to feel the anxiety pour into her as she found her legs take off into the air while her hands stayed stuck to the object in front of her. She instinctively coiled her legs around the object so she wouldn't fall off and possibly injure herself again, but it did nothing to possible calm her down as her helpless body went through the opening next.
She wanted to puke and huddle into a corner for herself, but she wouldn't get her way during the worst day of her life. As much as she wanted to clamp her eyes shut the deity that laughed at her misfortune prohibited her from all sensible actions. She at least got to finally see what she got stuck to, and at first glance it didn't surprise her too much after what she heard. The one pencil Molly wanted from her storage ended up right where Nancy desired to hide and the one sticky part was nothing more than a piece of gum that unfortunately came into contact with her. Her unluckiness knew no bounds and it clawed at her from the inside.
Her head turned from the pencil only to see the biggest pair of eyes she had ever seen.
"Eew, someone must have put their used gum on this. Gross, but I can handle it."
Nancy couldn't feel her uncontrollably shaken body as it rumbled beyond control to the point of complete numbness. Her eyes dropped tears like no tomorrow only to suddenly witness two of the giant girl's huge fingers come in very close to where she stayed stuck. With the sheer size difference between the two, Nancy basically got an extreme close up view of Molly's fingertips as they loomed next to her. She saw indents that stretched all over the place and some loose pieces of skin that almost made her sick to her stomach. Dozens of loose pieces fell off as the fingers made contact with the wad of gum and deep impact noises rang through her ears that gave her a small headache. Her fingernails scratched the surface whether she meant to or not which caused some excess particles of the gum to get wedged under them and slightly stuck on the ends. Nancy even got the displeasure to see Molly's fingernails not completely smoothed out like the untrained eye would have lead to believe. Various points and jagged angles littered each of the tips along with all of their layers like she just saw something under a microscope. She could feel something deep in her lungs as the grotesque imagery practically stared her in the face and her whole body went into overload. She wanted out of everything her long torture session unfairly smitten her with and the close up views of Molly body served as the last straw.
Her deafening scream ended up as her loudest one to date.
She shut her eyes from the absolute fear built up in her since she found herself tiny. She dared to not open them under any circumstances as she tried to wander off into a happy place only for the haunts to completely envelop her mind. She cut herself off from everything and wanted nothing else in the current reality as it pushed her to her breaking point. If anything it could have driven her further down beyond the depths of comprehension but it resulted in the same thing. Nancy had enough.
She couldn't feel any part of her body respond and expected the worst but then she picked up something in her hearing.
"What the…did I just hear something? I swear I heard a voice for a second."
A part of the clouds that stuck fear needles into Nancy's back slowly parted as she felt a bit of the weight lift off of her back. As much as she didn't want to move her eyes the brief period gave her enough to slightly open one only a little bit. Her tear filled sight almost faltered from such skewed visuals but she managed to notice Molly's gargantuan fingertips slowly pull back from around her as she shuddered uncontrollably. She lacked the comprehension at the moment to figure out what happened but she didn't need to wait long until she got more results.
Her voice still locked itself up tight as the fear still dug its roots into her, but she didn't need to use it as she heard Molly speak again.
"Wait, did I just hear it from my pencil?"
While her sight only allowed a limited scope, the frightened Nancy could barely see the giant girl's massive face turn left and right for a couple of seconds before it immediately settled at an angle right at her. The gravity under her shifted from the pencil she got stuck to before her body went pale. She may have handled seeing Molly's face from a distance with a somewhat less than average mindset, but when she got up close she almost felt the need to faint. Two planet sized eyes gazed straight into her like they had laser vision and the scope of her entire face encompassed all of reality if she wanted. While she showed no ill intentions at first, a change in perspective bathed her in a different light that Nancy found horrifying.
Nancy's eyes shot open before the two girls exchanged startled screams.
Molly instantaneously released her pencil which sent Nancy tumbling to the ground below. While it didn't last too long, luckily Nancy landed from the top part as the pencil made impact with the ground. The force of such a landing also released the tiny girl from her sticky prison before she landed on the floor next to the pencil without serious injury. Her whole body felt very active from such a sudden scare but not enough to pull her out of her ongoing misery. She told herself to not look up, but she had no idea where she ended up, especially after she accidentally stowed away inside Molly's bag, so she mustered just enough to tilt her head around.
She almost went into another panic attack once her eyes set on everything around her. First impressions alone informed her that Molly didn't share a common bedroom archetype compared to what she normally had accustomed to. In fact, she saw that Molly had an entire bedroom in some type of attic or something similar to one. While she usually expected attics to serve as some type of storage area, which consequently covered everything in dust and grime, the one she noticed around her actually gave off vibes of a well decorated bedroom. She first took her attention over to the bed in one of the corners that consequently put it closer to the roof which left a portion cramped in the slant. She had to admit the purple blanket with pink dots really caught her eye along with a weird shape of a bookcase that sat right at the end of the whole bed. Because of the slant one portion appeared missing which Nancy never knew could work, but apparently Molly did to an extent. A couple of books and other crafts laid still on the shelves next to a couple of pictures on the slant of a wall. The back wall next to the shelves supported one really large curved window one could easily gaze out of and watch all of the people down on the ground while a small dresser of sorts set near the front of it. A bulbous round lamp and an alarm clock reminiscent of stereos had their presence on the dresser that potentially could have been some type of stylistic choice Nancy never heard about. Her attention temporarily set over to the green beanbag chair in the opposite corner at one point, which surprised her to a degree. While not as memorable to her as her special Motichan beanbag chair she appreciated Molly's choice of extra comfort. If anything it stood out in her eyes next to the various objects beside it. If any type of hobby stood out about Molly to the shrunken girl, artistic talent finished in the number one spot. She located an open cardboard box filled with yarn, paints, and paintbrushes right beside the beanbag chair along with a canvas held together with a wooden stand just like the professionals did. She even saw some type of pattern on the canvas that detailed some type of goofy ghost with a big nose and bow tie. As much as Nancy got scared easily she liked the talent on display, but it didn't end there. All across the slanted walls of the room hung multiple other pieces of work that Nancy would never compare to. From a picture of sunflowers, a butterfly, and even a cute puppy Molly sure had the talent when it came to drawings. However, while the drawings provided lots of eye candy for the shrunken girl, she never would have imagined Molly as someone still into doll play when she took notice of some type of modeled house next to the canvas. It even appeared like a multi storied model as it came with multiple green roofs and a some elegant styled windows she never knew existed on doll houses when she went to the store. One glance up at the very top revealed some type of cross akin to most churches, which gave Nancy implications as to what it truly represented. She hastily wrote them out of her head as she made note of a couple of ordinary rugs and a flat door on the floor, likely for entering and exiting, and finally took everything in as three colored ceiling lamps hung above her. As much as Nancy had her preferences with room locations, Molly contained quite an extravagant set of a room that she wouldn't mind bunking into if given the chance.
She still missed the chance to get out of her comfort zone as she curled up and held her legs in complete fear of what she just went through. Her limited sight managed to pick up Molly who appeared just as equally worried near the front window. Even with the distance apart from each other Nancy couldn't underestimate just how titanic Molly stood at compared to her. The bottoms of her pink and yellow shoes even towered over her endlessly from Nancy's punishing proportions. It became more apparent when she shakily saw the giant girl walk toward her as each step came with a sounding boom that tossed her into the air for a second. Buckets of sweat poured from Nancy's forehead before Molly put herself close but not by too much to not accidentally squish her. From Nancy's angle, she saw a titan stand right before her. If anything Molly could hold an entire continent in her hands and take over an entire ocean it she put her back to it. It painted her in a monstrous light that put Nancy on her breaking point once more. She might have never meant to be portrayed as such but Nancy certainly saw it.
The shrunken one scooted back some when she noticed Molly get on her knees and put her head to the floorboards. Her entire face took up Nancy's whole vision that nearly made her cover her eyes. Her entire body went numb as Molly's planet eyes stared down at her for a second time.
"Wait…NANCY?!"
Her head ached from the volume of Molly's voice. She covered her ears and shuddered some more but everything else prohibited her from further actions. Her sight picked up Molly's astounded expression as it seemed he tried to comprehend the speck sized height of someone she just met. She couldn't blame her for acting like she did at that moment since it must have become some type of phenomenon to her, although Nancy still didn't fully get to know her since school.
The two didn't get to speak further as something immediately popped out of the dollhouse Nancy saw earlier. While she knew dolls had the highest probability, some type of nasty apparition would end up near the bottom. Upon first glance at the anomaly she freaked out but not enough to scream as she wasted most of her breath already from Molly earlier. All of the tales she heard about possible ghouls and ghosts around Brighton turned out as one hundred percent true and to see one in Molly's abode reinforced the notion about the weird occurrences that happened around her. Nancy's extremely timid nature came back to bite her right as she sat on the floor completely helpless and shrunk. She started to understand Molly much closer than anyone else that didn't reside in her family whether Nancy wanted to or not.
Scratch's voice quickly stood out to her as the one she heard right before Molly kidnapped her while the ghost himself had a big smile on his face as he appeared.
"I heard the screams! Did you finally discover that box filled with-"
His eyes eventually laid on the astonished Molly and nothing else which caused him to immediately frown.
"Oh…nothing. I should have expected that from the start. Dang it, you got me in the zone for a second there!"
"Sorry Scratch, but something kind of came to my attention…in a really weird way." Molly answered. Nancy stayed silent and curled up on the floor as she watched the scene unfold.
"So it's just another day in the life of Molly McGee then." Scratch said while seemingly unimpressed. "Tell me something I don't know on a daily basis."
"Oh really?" Molly said with some astonishment left in her. "Then look in the spot where I'm pointing and see what I mean."
"Okay, okay, fine. I got it." Scratch replied. She then proceeded to point straight at the spot where Nancy sat which made the tiny girl increasingly worried. Before she knew it, the transparent stout specter floated over to where Molly instructed and set his gaze right at her. He got up pretty close to her for a better look which scared the girl so much that she yelped for a second and buried her head into her legs. Just like Molly, Nancy paled in comparison to the ghost's height and panicked in response.
Once he got his eyeful Scratch pulled back in his own slight surprise before he got back to Molly.
"Whoa, you weren't kidding. Isn't that the Nancy girl you humiliated back there? Looks like you really wanted to bury her in misfortunes! First the cake incident and now some type of shrinkage? Color me impressed."
"I didn't shrink her, I found her like that!" Molly responded.
"SUUUUUUUURE you didn't." Scratch said with an obvious sarcastic tone. Molly put on a pretty comical pout before she turned to face the shrunken girl by her sneakers without repercussions. Of course at Nancy's size it basically became impossible as even the slight shift of Molly's shoes made a few quakes that sent Nancy upward for a second.
The giant girl tilted her head down while Nancy barely glanced out. She dared to not say anything while her body tried and failed to recover from all of the bigger sights around her.
"Yeeeaaaaah, so I kind of have a ghost with me. He's not so bad, I promise!"
Scratch rolled his eyes before he eventually got over to Nancy.
"So…a girl somehow became half a centimeter big? That…shouldn't be possible. Okay, now I'm calling out some shenanigans here…and when I get driven to those results then there's definitely something wrong here."
"You finally came to that conclusion only now?" Molly responded. "When did you calculate her exact size?"
"If I ended up cursed to anyone else I probably would have thought about something wrong sooner, but since I'm stuck with you…well, I learned that anything goes in your presence." Scratch explained with a flat expression. "As to how I found out her real height, well…I didn't. I'm just guessing from first impressions but I'm sure she's around those numbers. You can thank me later."
Nancy had a bit to take in from the brief exchange while huddled up in her own mind. First off, even though the fact that she shrunk obviously indicated something about wrong about her abnormal condition, apparently her awareness of the spirits bound to the world around her and her ability to fully visualize and hear them got inflicted on her as some sort of side effect that shouldn't have happened. While that sounded worrying to her already, that meant she would have to deal with the possibility of seeing ghosts over tens times her size while she could do absolutely nothing. Also something about a curse passed by her hearing but her head contained so much overriding emotions she discarded the thought almost immediately. Lastly, her true shrunken size got finally revealed to her as around half a centimeter big which made her more mortified than anything else she heard. Inches proved as small to her in a nutshell but centimeters, let alone half of one, shoved her into some of the harshest measurements possible. She dared to not think about what heinous visuals she would unfortunately have the privilege to witness next and it explained all of the different perspectives she could see but no one else without some sort of magnifying glass. She still stayed quiet between Molly and Scratch, but the new revelations only made things worse for her in her head.
She tried to mumble to herself to keep her mind occupied so she wouldn't pay attention to the harsh reminders around her, only for Molly to suddenly pick up on it.
"Are you saying something Nancy? I can't really hear you fully from down there. Here, let me bring you in a bit closer."
Nancy's heart staggered as she felt the needles pierce into her skin again. She knew what Molly meant and surely didn't like the idea but she could never get a say in anything under a harsh punishment. She refused to gaze up, but her downward sight managed to notice a faint shadow loom over her and draw in close. Before she could comprehend anything, she felt a small tap on the shoulder from one of Molly's gargantuan fingers as another sense across her back followed after.
"DON'T TOUCH ME!"
It took a few seconds for her mind to pick up the pace and realize what just happened. Her pupils nearly vanished as she instantly covered her mouth. Her vision faded into a bit of a haze but she could make out Molly's hand as it withdrew a bit from the outburst along with an expression that carried some shock to it. Her worried mind carried instincts which could make her snap at any single moment. In some ways in reminded her of how everything started back at school even though everything else painted an enigma. If Molly wanted she could retort back in any way possible and Nancy could do nothing but let it happen. She held all of the power even if Nancy attempted to defend herself. Nancy contained a glass body for a condition which put her in no position to do anything to anyone bigger than her.
Nancy failed to find the courage to speak after that and she sat too stunned to pay attention to the fact that Molly brought her hand back down behind her to pick her up. Before she even knew it she found herself up into the air in an elevation brought by the giant girl before her. Gravity shifted and a breeze flew into her face but before long Nancy found herself closer to Molly's understanding face that contained no ire at all. From her angle she took up most of the sky and her vision while her innocent eyes the size of moons stared right in her direction. Her smile stretched continents and punctured the clouds in a way that shaped them into friendly rainbows after a quick glow of sunshine. The encompassed plains of her hand extended for miles and miles on end with no end in sight, including the indents, while the mountains of her fingers circled around her like guardians that bared their protection just for her. Something about the close up of Molly irked Nancy toward a certain direction but it suppressed beyond belief under the punishments of her set reality.
Whether the giant girl understood the outburst from earlier or not, Nancy's inner mechanisms barred her from any further utterances. She bottled and curled herself up like she usually did and spoke some mutterings that Molly could hear.
"Please…I didn't want this…don't…don't splat…or…or eat me…I never…wanted this…"
Molly stared down at the shrunken girl in her hand with a confused look while Scratch got in close next to her for better visuals on Nancy.
"What sort of aspect lead you to think I would attempt something that heartless? Just because I'm massive to you doesn't mean I lack a sense of humanity. Besides…I think you've probably suffered enough."
"So you don't want to send that girl into the depths of your belly? I dunno, for in the few days you've stayed here I've seen you pig out on-"
"Not helping Scratch." Molly interjected as she briefly leered at him for a second. The ghost huffed for a moment before Molly turned her attention back to Nancy.
"At least…please take me…back home…please…please…"
Molly's reasonable outlook went a bit negative once she heard the tiny girl's mutters. Nancy didn't like the red flags coming up which even made her form buckets of tears in preparation.
"I…I don't think that's a viable option right now."
Nancy could feel her heart stop at that very moment. At that point her mutters became full on sentences out of sheer desperation.
"Wha…what?! How come?! You can't just keep me to yourself! You've stricken me with enough already and I can't live like this!"
"I'm not doing this out of malice or anything Nancy, as I also want this issue sorted out as soon as possible to get it off of my back, but…we can't just rush things right now." Molly answered. "They don't have any clue as to how this happened and if this gets out to the public, well…the media would go crazy over such a phenomenon. I…I think we need some time to plan things going forward for any chance to solve your shrinkage."
"Sooooooo…you're going to resort to kidnapping?" Scratch said. "Dang, and I thought I had issues."
Nancy never saw what happened next coming. Before the shrunken girl even knew what occurred, Molly instantly turned over to Scratch as if a switch flipped and snapped in her head. Her eyes went a bit bigger and her teeth clenched slightly while she used her free hand to grip the ghost from under his face. It seemed she also temporarily forgot that she held Nancy in her other hand as she inexplicably coiled her fingers around the tiny kid, thankfully without too much grip to choke her, while Molly's attention set on Scratch.
Her voice quivered and stuttered all over the place.
"Scratch, we clearly have a situation beyond the reaches of normal comprehension. I have never undergone something to this scale and for someone like me it puts a lot of unintended pressure down my throat and sits there like a LUMP that you can never swallow. I've learned a lot in my travels, and I mean A LOT, but never have I come across something of this type of magnitude. Meeting locals, understanding the landmarks, and everything in between has CHILD'S PLAY in their descriptions but when you have to understand the concept of a girl that somehow SHRUNK for no discernible reason you lose a lot of focus! Everything lies in the balance of YOUR actions only, and if you screw up just once then you'll probably get blamed and sent to juvenile court! My life has currently been going well since I moved here and I don't want to become an outcast this early so STOP MAKING A FUSS OVER EVERYTHING SCRATCH!"
Her fingers constricted Nancy a bit harder which would have made her panic more if Molly's current actions didn't catch her full attention. Since the moment she had the displeasure to meet her Molly always remained in an upbeat attitude with a sense of understanding beneath all of it, but to see her suddenly snap showed she clearly had more under the hood than Nancy initially thought. It appeared that she also had her immense worries over Nancy's shrinkage that remained bottled up until Scratch finally untied the knot. In a couple of ways she understood where she came from as she would end up as the prime suspect if Nancy's tiny self got discovered at any point and word got out about the incident at school and with so much to think and take in it must have strained her out of her comfort zone. Out of everything to relate with Molly on, the whole situation on the sudden shrink boggled both of their minds into feelings beyond their personalities and they reached their limits at best.
Even after her broken display, Scratch never stooped to her level. He opened his eyes wider than usual though.
"Wow, so now both of you have primed me up for a major headache. Ugh, I'm never going to catch a break like this!"
He rubbed his forehead for a second before he deeply sighed and got back to the two panicked girls.
"Look you two, and I'm probably going to regret saying this, but I think you have the right idea. You two clearly need to think about this for a night or two as the mere mentions of what happened messed both of you up big time. If we want to get some type of focus we should probably relax for a while to take everything in and try to process any potential options…and maybe get you off of my back. I can't have two nervous wrecks in the same place ruin my afterlife after one incident potentially changed everything!"
The ghost crossed her arms and gave off an intense glare at the two girls. Since the moment at school Nancy cruised through all colors of the rainbow and probed her brain in dozens of ways she never knew could work. It was almost like she ran through some sort of world record and exhausted herself in the process. She had nothing left in her and the whole retrospective tired her out to no end. While her nervousness and fear drove her forward, everything else spontaneously collapsed to hibernate for the next couple of hours. She had so much free space in her head that it exerted dizziness over her that sucked out the attentiveness and left her empty in Molly's hand.
Molly approached from a different angle as some type of understanding hit her that interrupted her freak out.
"…wow Scratch, that was possibly the most insightful thing that ever came out of your mouth. I guess I also may have overthought too much from that accident. Thanks for the help there."
"I didn't do it for you. I just wanted you and Nancy to shut up before I suffered a headache." Scratch answered. "Speaking of which…"
"Oh right." Molly answered with a smile. Their attention turned over to the shrunken girl in Molly's hand who stayed quiet until then.
"Well Nancy, we need your final approval on this. Want to wait on this so we can focus on it later?"
As much as the worrywart wanted to deny all of it, the whole process of rounding out all of her emotions and everything that surrounded it tired her out. She wouldn't get to go back to her home and would have to stay with Molly and Scratch for a bit, but with no one else in the true knowledge of what damage got afflicted on her she could only turn to them. She even saw Molly have her own troubles with the whole incident so she practically had to muster through the same boat. While not the most logical or best answer if she didn't want the problem to escalate she could see one potential option.
As her eyes faintly glimmered from all of her tears before Molly and Scratch, Nancy motioned a light nod. Molly responded to the answer with a heartfelt smile while Scratch remained stagnant.
"Thanks for understanding. As much as we don't know how this happened I swear we'll figure something out to reverse your size. I kind of feel partially responsible after the humiliation I put on you after all."
"Hey, I never agreed on this 'we' thing." Scratch said as he motioned an emphasis on 'we'. "Nothing about this concerns me at all! You caused this issue, not me!"
Molly's head instantly flipped around and gave off one of the deadliest stares imaginable for the thirteen year old girl. It made Nancy sink down in Molly's grasp while Scratch didn't change at all.
"Okay, okay, sheesh, I pretty much have no choice on the matter. As long as I'm not required extensively…I guess I'll put in SOME effort."
Molly's face immediately went back to her normal happy expression as she carefully placed Nancy on her bed and gave her ghost buddy a warming hug…with some tight results.
"Awwww, thanks for your respect Scratchy! It's so nice to know that I always have you to hang out with!"
"Whether I want to or not unfortunately…" Scratch answered with disappointment as his transparent figure allowed him to slip out of Molly's hug. Nancy couldn't help but sigh lightly under her breath as she saw the confrontation from the sidelines. Her handicapped height meant most of the normal actions she would normally have no trouble doing dangled above her reach and prohibited it unless she got help from someone else, most likely from Molly. Her lifestyle basically flipped on its head until she returned to normal and she had to rely on someone she just met to make it happen.
Her distinct sadness didn't go unnoticed as she quickly witnessed Molly walk up to the bed and gaze down at her with a smile.
"Don't get so down in the dumps Nancy, for we'll figure out what happened and restore you before you know it! Just think of this as, ummm…a gathering of friends! Yeah, just like-!"
She suddenly stopped before her head shot up for a second while she snapped her fingers.
"Wait, that's it! We should totally make our own special group for the three of us! With our prime objective and most significant challenge yet, I say we should come together, just like all of those superhero movies, as we find out more to this mystery on our hands! Okay, who has a good name?"
"Wait, wait, wait, wait, give me a moment to catch up!" Scratch said to let the comprehension kick in. "What do you mean by this 'group' thing? I thought we just wanted to fix the midget, not become social butterflies!"
"It only consists of us Scratch, no one else." Molly responded. "I just think this whole operation deserves some type of recognition since, you know, it's probably the most difficult situation we have to tackle so far. This will go down in history as one of my greatest accomplishments after all!"
Molly still stayed silent while Scratch didn't seem too amused.
"In that case I suggest we call our small group 'The Concept' then."
"Really? Why that?"
"Because I hate it."
Molly's face went flat before she shook her head slowly.
"Yeah, remind me to never ask for you opinions on naming stuff again." Molly stated before she thought for a moment. After a few more seconds she quickly perked up with inspiration.
"Wait a minute, I got it! Let's call ourselves…the MISSION Squad! It fits perfectly!"
"And what sort of idea came up with that?" Scratch asked unimpressed. "Sounds…dumb."
"It's a well organized code. Since we can't exactly speak about this in public it makes PERFECT sense! It's like we formed some sort of top secret agency which kind of fits the bill for the whole thing!"
"And what exactly does it stand for?"
"Molly wIth Scratch Save Inhibited wOrried Nancy! Pretty nice, huh?"
"Umm, I don't think you got the naming conventions-"
"It's a great name and that's final! Hey Nancy, you like the name right?"
Nancy's moment of silence as she watched the two from a distance ended as the girl a million times bigger than her brought her back into the limelight. It almost startled her in a sense, but for the most part she still remained drained of everything which left her with almost nothing left. If she had to answer she would have probably went in favor of Molly's suggestion and let her do her own thing to spice things up a bit. She wanted to get the bad vibes out of the way from everything that happened so far and yet Nancy still couldn't shake off the overwhelming negativity brought on her ever since she met Molly.
She groaned a little in sadness before she curled up and swiveled to the side to crawl back into her own head but she never got a couple of seconds in before she witnessed the gargantuan Molly walk up to her on the bed and stare her down with her understanding and planet sized eyes.
"Come on Nancy, you have to pull yourself together. You'll get through this, and that's a promise I'm willing to make. Until then, just cheer up and hang with us! We'll make sure you never feel left out just because of your reduction!"
Right after Molly said that some type of light pop music rang through everyone's eardrums. Molly's body started to pump up and down while Nancy still sulked with emptiness in her own world. Scratch shook his head, crossed his arms, and rolled his eyes in disapproval like a killjoy while he tried to stay out of it.
The music continued to play as a song started between Molly and Nancy.
The Short Theme for the MISSION Squad
Molly: So you're all sad, shrunken down, and smaller than my shoe,
But you don't have to sit down and feel all kinds of blue!
Everything you knew has blown up in proportions,
Yet you always have us to cover those distortions!
Nancy: (Feels Molly poking her with her large fingers which makes her turn look at her with pain in her eyes) You don't know how it feels after everything I've seen,
After everything you pulled and dragged like someone really mean!
Molly: You never have to see those horrid stuff anymore!
Scratch: (muttering) Heh, you must have not seen that one ghoul Salvatore…
Molly: We're the MIIIIIIIIISSION Squad! We're the MIIIIIIIIISSION Squad!
We're on a mission to save someone shrunk!
We're the MIIIIIIIIISSION Squad! We're the MIIIIIIIIISSION Squad!
We'll go through it all and might get to show some spunk!
Scratch: (muttering quickly) Notreally…
Nancy: (Still very unhappy) What makes you think you are capable of this?
Will you find some evidence that you'll probably dismiss?
I can't go around so small and have to live so low!
Do you even know that I can't stand seeing one gross giant toe?!
Molly: I understand your plights and all of your omissions,
But can perfectly handle all of those odd and weird conditions!
We all support each other and can hear the beck and call,
It will take a lot of effort to budge this friendly Mol'!
Scratch: (thinking slowly) I gueeeess this iiiiiis the price to paaaaay for right noooooow.
Twooooo annoyances next to meeeee and I want to go say "Ciao!"
Molly: We're the MIIIIIIIIISSION Squad! We're the MIIIIIIIIISSION Squad!
We'll get the job done and save Nancy from all!
We're the MIIIIIIIIISSION Squad! We're the MIIIIIIIIISSION Squad!
Our records and achievements will get put on a wall!
All of it ended in the way it started. Nancy slumped back into the bed as Molly continued to eye her innocently and Scratch watched from next to her. The giant girl tried her hardest, but Nancy still didn't feel all too right about the whole thing.
At least it provided enough to get her to speak back up.
"I…I don't know…I…"
"We'll make this work for you Nancy. Our new group never leaves a member behind." Molly stated with her signature warm smile.
"This is a load of nonsense in every single way." Scratch muttered to himself as he crossed his arms and rolled his eyes. Even though Nancy couldn't get out of her negativity yet it didn't stop Molly from driving down to her level. In fact, a short time after they spoke she suddenly got straight back on her feet and stiffened her back to form some type of valiant pose. She put her hands on her hips in a stern fashion and proudly grinned in the light that basked onto her.
"I swear on all of the strange happenings that go on around me, I will find a way to reverse Nancy's miniaturization and bring a positive attitude out of her!"
"From what reality did you pull from to change your pace for the worst?" Scratch answered as stagnant and flat as usual. "You don't know anything that will arise because of your new mangled resolutions."
"I might not understand what will come, but for the sake of saving our new friend I'm going all in!" Molly answered with valor. "I cannot let her suffer any more than she feels now!"
Something almost got Nancy to feel something at that moment. While faint, something about the way Molly acted stirred up something before it went out completely. She never wanted to see it leave as for a quick second some type of inaudible words passed through her hearing. Something held her back and yet no reigns lassoed over her neck. Whatever the case, it gave her next to nothing and even provided questions as to whether she fabricated the whole thing just to calm herself down.
Her train of thought halted when she heard a large rumble before her. She gazed forward only to see the gigantic Molly hold her stomach for a second.
"Well that's one way to interrupt my mood. Heheheh, I spent so much time up here that I almost forgot dinner."
"That happens to me probably more times than I can count…if you couldn't take the hint." Scratch flatly replied.
The three temporarily went separate ways while Molly headed downstairs for her dinner time. Before Nancy could even attempt anything with Scratch, the ghost nonchalantly phased back into the modeled house without as much as a recognition that she existed. It pointed signs in a certain direction that Nancy shuddered to think about and compounded with her current "larger than life" fears to completely shut her up at the time. She doubted herself if Molly would ever assign her ghost friend to act as the large babysitter over her tiny self since he had his mind set to his own agendas, at least from the observations she kept on him. If anything, the less she got to see him the better for the sake of her sanity since he could come out at any time for a cheap trick like what he pulled on her earlier. Even though she hoped to keep interactions with him to a minimal, somehow she felt like she could relate to him…whatever crazy thought formulated in her head at the moment. She tossed it to the side so she could take in the situations around her at her own pace, but at her current state his appearances her time with him alongside Molly only started.
She completely spaced out a majority of her time on top of Molly's bed with absolutely nothing to do. Her fear shackled her to keep her words to herself and not let Scratch out under any circumstances. More surprise scares from the ghost would only escalate her emotions even further and drain her of the last ounce of positive vibes left in her…if they even existed anymore. Even though she had more moments to herself, her sickness riled back up as she sat on the bed. While not as terrible as she experienced earlier, it still bugged her and made her hold her stomach on multiple occasions. He pushed back waves of vomit that did the trick but still proved troublesome on her own. On the off chances during her alone time Molly made her appearances back to check up on her and to give her crumb of what she had for dinner so she wouldn't starve. As the giant girl reappeared Nancy's stomach suddenly subsided each time and gave her a few precious moments to recover, which became a blessing in disguise for the tiny one. Molly ended up having typical tacos at the time, so she brought back a crumb of the meat for Nancy to nibble on. While she would have preferred something else she had no other option, so despite her feelings she dug into it anyway. Molly couldn't stay long so once she noticed Nancy dig in she left the room, and once she did so Nancy almost got the need to heave again. Like before she held it back but it made the rest of her dinner with the crumb of taco meat pretty nauseating at times. She didn't stop eating it spotless either, as once she couldn't eat any more her face and parts of her clothes got soaked from excess water of the cooking process. Since the piece towered over her, like everything else since she shrunk, she got around twenty percent of it finished before she forced herself to hold before she belly burst open. While she never considered herself as a big eater, after everything that happened to her tat brought her emotions full circle it left her pretty famished. She even noticed some type of white tree in the process of relaxing her belly that she never noticed in Molly's room until then. For a relaxation period she definitely deserved it.
Her mind scoured across the landscape until she finally noticed the sun gone from the sky in the big window. To her benefit Scratch stayed put in the type of dollhouse the entire time and most likely never batted an eye in her direction. If anything he probably wanted to never acknowledge her at all and pretend like she never existed. While somewhat cruel to think about, Nancy didn't get too much into her head until the bottom door opened and revealed the giant girl and her eager smile. The tiny one's stomach immediately settled as she made her way into the room and over to her bed where Nancy sat. Even after she saw how gargantuan Molly stood compared to her she could never truly grasp the sheer scale differences she now faced.
The height difference alone got Nancy to curl up and hold her legs in place. Molly caught on quickly as she got on her knees for a better look at the shrunken girl.
"Aww, even after everything I explained you still feel uncomfortable around me?"
Nancy peeked up from her covered position with a couple of shudders before she slowly nodded her head.
"Yeah, I guess I understand how deep this whole thing drove into you. It must have messed you up pretty badly, but you just have to hold on a bit longer. Just because I appear differently to you over everyone else doesn't mean I'm heartless. Here, I'll prove it to you."
Nancy's eyes shot open as she vigorously shook her head nonstop. Her breath shortened and her body constricted even further into her legs in heavy denial over everything. She couldn't see Molly from her angle, but when she felt something touch her back it only meant one thing. Her eyes stayed in the darkness of her legs as her underside went next followed by a shift in gravity. She dared to keep her eyes in the one spot so she wouldn't draw conclusions as to what Molly had in mind since the giant girl had the power to do anything to her squishy body whether she wanted to or not. Something in her screamed to get away and forget everything and Nancy never had the potential to answer in the presence of someone that rivaled a titan.
More gravity shifts followed and Nancy refused to visualize her surroundings. However, she never saw Molly's next action coming. Before she attempt to block out everything about the situation to let Molly do what she wanted with her…a sensation hit. She never saw it until it hit right in front of her. The sudden action pulled Nancy out of her fear for a second and managed to get the girl to open her eyes and what she saw warded some of the darkness away. Her entire vision had the entirety of Molly's white undershirt plastered over them, and even though she couldn't move her limbs it didn't take a genius to figure out that the giant girl bound her with her fingers. She would have lightly gasped at such an action if she had the courage to do it, but something about it put her in some type of stasis she wouldn't want to come out of so quickly.
Molly gave Nancy one of the biggest hugs imaginable.
Nancy's sorrow halted and froze along with her expression. She had no idea if it came as a result of her grip over her or something else entirely, but she heard something in her. Molly's chest provided a warm temperature over the shrunken girl while something screamed to get freed from its fettered prison. It passed through her head and rang endlessly for her attention but she couldn't see it. Her body tingled all over while the noises shouted and hammered her in every direction. So many parts of her conflicted with each other to try and deduce the origin and her skin crawled in the process. She never wanted the moment to end, and she didn't know why, but then they filtered into a much weaker aspect. Her attempts to track it down only resulted in swiftly fading noises while her body stuck back into her being. Nothing but empty hollows of what once stood there stuck in her hearing by then and soon after her heart stuttered like it always did. The enigma of that brief moment clashed with Nancy and she stood right in the middle of it.
She wanted it. She wanted it more than anything.
Nancy conflicted so much with herself that she never noticed Molly pull her back until her face loomed over her head like an entire solar system.
"There, how did that feel? To be quite honest, I've actually wanted to do that once I got a closer observation of you." Molly said with a smile. "I couldn't help myself, as even though you personally think of your shrinkage as some type of punishment for me it makes you look very cute! You almost have the incredibly snug nature of a teddy bear from my angle!"
Molly's statement snapped Nancy back to reality while her friendly smile calmed her to an extent. She really acted like she had no ill intentions against her glass body and wanted to treat her like someone with an actual soul. She couldn't assure everything on a first day though, and she still bottled up some uneasiness about the plan moving forward. One wrong move and the illusion would shatter.
Molly spoke up again.
"Oh, I almost forgot to say this after the whole fiasco with discovering you and your condition! I know it might not sound like much to you, but it means a lot to me."
Even through her muffled status she could hear the giant girl perfectly fine, although some parts came at a higher volume from the obvious size difference. As for what she heard, nothing passed through her as something on a higher scale other than her tiny stature and the trials that came with it. However, the giant girl stated that it concerned her more while it didn't strike Nancy in the same way. Molly emoted such a high and gratuitous attitude for a girl which Nancy didn't see all too often, whether by her high anxiety status or her disability, so for something to shake her up it must have stood on some pedestal that never fazed the one in her hand. Her demeanor morphed into something else and Nancy could tell from her planets for eyes.
Molly kept her face at a decent distance away to not spook Nancy too much before she uttered the words.
"…I'm sorry."
Something touched inside Nancy that ached but her outlook suppressed it even in the presence of such sincerity. To hear such power in only two words chilled Nancy like no other but her mind remained hollow to its true meaning. She had never seen that side of Molly until then and she never knew it existed. Molly bared not knifes, but flowers.
Her condolences continued.
"I'm truly sorry that all of this had to happen because of that accident, and I really regret the fact that I probably started it. I just wanted to meet up with everyone after I moved here, and I should have seen the writing on the wall when I went up to you. I guess you're the autistic one I've heard mutterings about, and I wish I got the message sooner before all of it happened."
It almost hurt to hear Molly utter those words. She learned ahead of time that a student who attended the same school she would go to contained a disability that made her think and understand things differently than others, and it didn't get brought into the forefront until she witnessed her collapse into a large cake. Nancy almost lacked the will to react from such a reveal and for the most part she held back on it. It almost appeared that Molly took a bit of a hit as she admitted her side of the story which mirrored over to Nancy just from the looks in her massive eyes.
She didn't end there.
"I never completely understood the ramifications of such a downside until I realized what happened back there, but before I could try to make things right…you suddenly reduced in size. I never meant for any of this and even though we don't know the full story…I feel like part of it occurred because of me. I cannot truly fathom what you must have went through before I noticed you. I don't know what will happen down the road, but I'll give one hundred ten percent until I see you stand before me. Again, I'm truly, truly sorry. Can you forgive me?"
Her eyes glistened from the pure emotion behind her apologies. She really tugged at Nancy's heart even though the tiny girl still had bottled up fear from looking at Molly's scale compared to her. Somewhere in her hollowed body another spark shined for a split second before it vanished. While she still pinned the blame on Molly for her crippling reduction, she reminded herself about the outburst she exclaimed that quickly set the mood for the time after. That shout potentially contributed to the domino effect after and forced her into the series of unfortunate events until now. If so she would end up just as guilty which meant that both of them brought the ire consequences ahead. The wave of slight nostalgia bestowed Nancy the little bump to make her decision.
"Umm…uhhhhhhh, well…I…I…I forgive you…please help me…"
Her immense worry faded a little as she saw Molly and her titanic face like a piece of a burden just lifted.
"Thanks, I really needed to hear that." Molly replied. "It's a start, but we'll make more progress down the road. Will it bother you if I place you for the night behind a couple of books on the bottom shelf above my bed? I want to keep you out of sight just in case even if it's not the most comfortable."
"That…that would…probably go nicely…" Nancy responded. Molly smiled and nodded before the gravity shifted under Nancy once again. It made her a bit dizzy enough to the point where she thought she saw a certain ghost peek out from his special dollhouse before he made a hasty retreat. She warded off the immediate motions as Molly approached her bed and the shelves above it. Once there she set her hand against the wood and even though Nancy would have preferred to stay put she slowly trudged across Molly's hand and safely got off near the back where she could hide behind the multiple towering novels. Once she settled around all of the dust she watched as Molly drew back and picked up a piece of tissue paper and a small cotton ball. She attempted to remain careful as she put the tissue over her but when she went for the cotton ball she accidentally hit Nancy on the back of the head with one of her large fingernails. It didn't hurt too much, but it gave Nancy a slight headache.
"Oops, sorry about that." Molly said before she cautiously placed the cotton ball next to Nancy and the tissue. As odd of a combination for blanket and bed Nancy saw, she didn't have much of a choice as she got under the tissue and placed her head on the cotton. She felt a bit of dust from the wood, but other than that she could make do with what she had.
Molly's innocent and huge eyes stared down at the tiny girl before she spoke one final time with some slight mood swings.
"I'm terribly sorry I don't have much on such an urgent notice. I'm not QUITE used to having others in my room for the night, well, other than Scratch obviously, and the fact that I just moved here. However, to know that I possibly have another person to hang out with, even though you stand at a fraction of my height…I'm holding back on SO much excitement. I'll have to learn how to work with your setbacks, but once I'm done with that I would LOVE to absolutely do stuff with you. I mean, your shrunken height can't be THAT bad, right? I'll show you that not everything is all doom and gloom as someone so tiny and bash all of your misery out of you…almost like Scratch I guess. All comfy down there?"
Most of the details Molly gave passed over Nancy's head from her drowsiness, but she held enough consciousness to muster a light nod to the giant girl.
"Ah, good. I'll make sure your stay in Casa Molly goes by as satisfying as possible! Good night!"
Nancy lacked the energy to speak up, so when Molly plopped back down on her bed and shut the lights off it didn't bother her too much. While she did want her sleep as soon as possible, she waited for a couple minutes of silence from the room before she made herself more comfortable. After that she fell fast asleep.
…at least she wanted to at first.
She shifted the tissue for a blanket a bit as she flipped to face the back wall of the shelf. She glanced back one more time to make sure Molly didn't silently stick behind her before she looked down and brought out the special gift around her neck. After all of the troubles she faced in the worst day of her life, her special ghost necklace remained intact. To know it survived made Nancy glad she at least had something still with her after she shrunk. While she wholeheartedly put the blame on Molly for dragging her through all of the horrendous scenes, she still had something to remind her of what she had before.
Even though half of it was missing due to the way Katrina shaped it, the necklace still had a surface that could be opened to reveal something inside. It only took a single press of a switch on the side before the ghost opened up to a small picture of Nancy and the rest of the household. She remembered the moment all too well as it came at a time where her family still stayed under the same household. Her older sister planned her college life ahead of time but when the picture was taken she still had a couple of extra matters to take care of. Nancy remembered how she nearly threw her back out with one of the heavy cardboard boxes that almost broke everything in it that would have infuriated her sister if things went a little too far. After that her parents handled everything else just for safety's sake and then they took the photo right there and then. She had never seen her mom and dad with big smiles like that and it made her glad to know that she is a part of their lives.
A few days after that her sister left and she hadn't seen her since.
Nancy fixated a gaze on the photo with tears in her eyes. To know that she wouldn't see them in the face inflicted a trauma that stuck with her that night. Molly brought this all on her and she had to deal with the consequences.
"I…I'm not sure about all of this. I've been shrunken by an older girl I just met and…and…and now I can't look at anything without…a panic attack. I wish I can go back to my normal life, but after today…I don't know if that's possible. Please, wake me up from this nightmare before Molly McGee tortures me further. I don't deserve to stay with her after everything she put on me…"
