How exactly they'd wound up at the tavern was a blur to Tonks. It was a small village, and the people gathered there clearly knew each other. They turned to the smiling couple with interest when they entered, and they all appeared good natured enough that Tonks knew they'd made the right choice.
"You two certainly look happy," the bartender said. "Is there something I can get for you?"
Tonks turned to Remus, feeling inexplicably bashful about why they were there. With every step they took, what they were doing felt more and more real, and part of her still expected someone to step in and dash her hopes.
"Yes," Remus said, his chest puffed out with pride. "We're hoping to get married, but we're two witnesses short. We were wondering if one of you fine people was willing to help us."
There was murmuring amongst those gathered. Everyone had turned to listen to the unexpected visitors.
"Count me in," a woman sitting at the bar said. "I always enjoy young love."
Remus turned bright red at being called young, and Tonks bit back a smirk.
"Thank you," Tonks said, feeling light from the kindness of a stranger.
The woman gave her a gentle smile and turned to the man next to her at the bar. "Come on, Bernard. I know you have the time."
The man in question playfully rolled his eyes, but he stood up. "I suppose I could spare a few minutes for such a momentous occasion."
Tonks still felt like she was floating on air as they left, the other patrons shouting encouragements after them.
