Katniss has been sent into the Past. King Snow is preparing to lay siege on the castle King Daniel, Ryker, & Haymitch are stuck at. It's her job to kill Snow but unfortunately, she was found by Finnick who has brought her to Peeta, and now the two soulmates must reconnect.
PS I do not own the Hunger Games.
"You," Finnick repeated looking at Peeta. "Your royal highness, you are acquainted with this lad?"
There was a thread that pulsed between them. It blurred the lines of reality and everything around Katniss faded away and only she and Peeta existed.
Her eyes took in his face, eyes, and lips, as she recalled what it was like to have his lips pressed to hers. Her face heated and her heartbeat increased. Katniss lifted her hand to touch her lips.
She watched as Peeta's eyes darkened as he beheld her wrist. Her magic stirred, she could feel it pool at the tips of her fingers. An electrical arc leaped from the center of their chests and connected in the middle. The look in Peeta's eyes intensified as they stood there. She gasped at its potency.
They began to move closer to each other, and the arc contracted. It was more than just simple physical attraction at play. There was something profound and divine occurring. The magical current running through her body was warm and enticing and it doubled as Peeta came closer.
The memory of the kiss played in her head in a constant loop as finally they stood toe to toe. Katniss was forced to look up into Peeta's eyes. His form was massive compared to her slight build. Yet despite his sturdy frame, height, and sex she was his equal. Standing there it dawned on Katniss, this was the way Peeta perceived her as.
She was his equal.
In their society women were never perceived as equals amongst men. They were a property often used as a bargaining tool. Even with her magical pedigree, she was considered less than a marginally talented male wizard.
"You bear the same mark as me," Peeta whispered in awe as he pointed to the mark on her wrist. His eyes flickered from her wrist to her eyes. He reached out to touch her but let his hand drop for a moment before running it through his hair.
"I do."
"Then the story of my life is complete," Peeta said.
"How so?" Katniss questioned.
"You are my soulmate," he smiled brilliantly and Katniss felt that she could drown in his warm blue eyes.
Finnick cleared his throat. "Are you two finished, speaking in hushed tones? I bought the lad here to speak to Haymitch."
Katniss didn't know what to say, her mouth opened and shut.
"Lad?" Peeta looked at Finnick crossly. He gave her a hard stare. "Finnick, that is no Lad."
"I am too a man," Katniss defended standing straighter to prove her point but her cheeks were hot, she could feel them burning. It was hard thinking of herself as a man with Peeta standing just feet away looking so wonderful. She was not a man, she was a woman with a woman's appetite. "My name is Fletcha."
"Fletcha," Finnick repeated.
"Are you mocking me?" Katniss questioned Finnick.
"Me? Never." Finnick however smirked before saying. "But your name is strange."
"One would say Finnick is rather strange too," Katniss scowled.
Peeta laughed, "She doesn't look like a man."
"I will concede this is not a man yet!" Finnick pointed at Katniss.
"Finnick me thinks you are informed, that which you see before is a daughter of Eve," Peeta responded.
Finnick walked around her, "This isn't a girl, I'd know if this was a daughter of Eve."
"Finnick." Peeta shook his head.
Katniss's face grew more inflamed and her entire body felt hot.
"Trust me this is a boy, a very young boy." Finnick stopped walking and shrugged as he walked to the fireplace to warm his hands. "Nonetheless, this boy is a great magician."
"Magician?" Peeta questioned.
Katniss watched Peeta come close to her.
"Do you have magic?"
"I have the sight sire." Katniss watched him, he was more handsome now than the last time she saw him. He looked taller, his shoulders broader. Her mouth watered for another taste of his lips.
"The sight, what is that?" Peeta questioned.
"It is a great power, my lord. I can step through doors." Katniss wondered why she sounded breathy.
"That day we were leaving, it was you, in my room, was it not?"
"Yes." Katniss couldn't hide the truth.
Peeta stepped closer to her, and her heart fluttered.
Katniss picked up his scent, she sniffed him, and he smelled delicious like fresh-baked bread. She couldn't understand why he smelled like food to her. He radiated warmth and her hands itched to touch him. His nearness caused her heart to beat quicker, and not from the fright of being discovered as a fraudulent male. Peeta saw the true nature of her sex and without a doubt, he was the man she was destined to be with. It meant she needed to protect him with her life.
"You kissed me." His face was close to hers; she could see the flecks of light green.
"Yes." His lips came closer.
"Peeta, is he the reason you do not like wenches?" Finnick's voice broke the moment and they separated.
At that moment Haymitch laughed and slid back in his chair taking a swig of the tankard he held in his hand.
"How long has he been like that?" Katniss asked.
"He's been drunk so long we have not been able to get him to stop drinking," Peeta said, rubbing his head. "He just magically makes another tankard of ale appear in his hand."
"Haymitch needs to become sober and so does everyone in this house," Katniss uttered. As long as she was focused on her mentor she could function. Other than that she wanted to kiss Peeta and that was a problem.
"We've no such luck, he's been on this unnatural course since Peeta found him in the streets," Finnick informed.
"How do you know him?" Peeta asked.
Ignoring Peeta and Finnick, Katniss needed to focus on Haymitch. He was the entire reason she came here. Ignoring the mess before her, Katniss approached.
"Haymitch." Kneeling down before him, Katniss whispered, "Look at me!"
Haymitch gazed at her with his bleary eyes.
She held up her arm and pushed away the sleeve revealing the gold cuff, "Remember who your enemies are."
"Where did you get this?" Haymitch asked if his voice contained hidden awe.
"You gave it to me," Katniss said. She knew Peeta and Finnick were looking on, curiosity painted on their faces.
"It belonged to my beloved." With an untrusting look, Haymitch reached out to touch the gold cuff. Katniss felt a spark leap from her body to Haymitch's. His eyes widened and glowed, she could see briefly through his eyes her past, their meeting, the strange bird that called to her in the forest, the journey on Pegasus, the land of the Forgotten men. The spell he cast on her to make her appear as a man to everyone except her soulmate. Her conversation with Ryker. Snow's army before the castle.
"What is she doing to him?" Peeta rushed forward.
"Peeta, do not touch him," Finnick warned, holding Peeta back. "I think he is a powerful wizard. When I met him, he propelled me backward with magic."
"You really think she has power?" Peeta asked.
"Yes." Finnick nodded, "The lad is magical and is very powerful."
The connection was broken. Katniss sat back on her haunches and shook her head. She'd seen some of Haymitch's past as well. She'd seen when Crane betrayed Haymitch and killed his wife driving Haymitch to drink. Taking a step back she took a deep breath. No matter how scary the visions she needed to move forward to find out what was going on. She needed to find Ryder and see if her father was still alive.
"Where is Ryder?" Katniss asked.
Haymitch held his head in his hands.
Katniss was afraid she'd damaged him somehow. She turned from Haymitch to Finnick and Peeta. "Where is he?"
"He is at the castle," Finnick answered.
"How do you know my brother?" Peeta frowned.
"You are from the Kingdom of Olvidado, the Land of the Forgotten Men. Your brother Daniel did not wish you to come here to see Snow." Katniss took a deep breath before saying, "I was sent here from the future to protect you."
Finnick and Peeta exchanged looks.
"The future?" Finnick looked incredulous.
"We must get word to Ryder he is in danger," Katniss insisted.
"How do we know we can trust you? You're just a boy." Finnick asked.
Katniss sighed, not knowing how to explain to Finnick that she was here to prevent not just Ryder's death but his death and that of Peeta. Just looking at her soulmate and knowing he died in this time and was not present in her time hurt.
In this time she was a child, an innocent child grieving the death of her father. "I am from the future. A future where you do not exist."
Finnick's eyes widened.
"In the throne room the day it was decided for Ryder and Peeta to come here. Daniel the Crown Prince, the King, and Ryder were arguing about coming here. Daniel said coming here was a ploy and he was right. Daniel didn't want him to come," Katniss looked straight at Peeta. "But Ryder said you were a master of diplomacy."
"It's true," Peeta said. "I was hiding, and listening to the conversation."
"The King agreed to allow Daniel to stay behind because he was the heir to the title."
"How?" Peeta questioned.
"I was there, I heard it all. The Haymitch from the future sent me here because all of you will die. I have to prevent that from happening."
Haymitch let go of his head and slowly stood. His eyes were clear as if his drunken stupor had vanished.
"There is no doubt you are a powerful magician. But how do I know you are telling the truth about moving forward or backward in time?" Finnick frowned.
"It is simple," Haymitch said. He held up the cuff she wore. "My beloved gave me this cuff and told me to remember who my enemy was. Fletcha would not be wearing this if it wasn't a symbol meant for me. I would never part with this unless it was absolutely necessary. You can trust the child."
Finnick gave Peeta a concerned look.
Peeta looked uneasy. "Haymitch how can we be sure?"
"Because this lad is the living embodiment of the prophecy foretold by Paylor upon her deathbed."
"Isn't Eragon of Everdeen the one which we were waiting for? There are a great many who would follow him into battle?" Peeta asked.
"No one has heard of Eragon of Everdeen, he has been missing all these months. Ryder has not seen him and no one speaks of him in the Capitol nor the castle." Finnick ran his hand through his hair.
"As it is, we have not heard from Ryder these past three days," Peeta said.
Katniss looked down in sadness. The news of her missing father caused Katniss to feel unexpected sorrow. She had hoped to see him once more however Snow took that away from her once more.
"This is the child Eragon of Everdeen." Haymitch waved his hands, and the mess before him disappeared.
"We need to get him out of the Castle," Katniss whispered.
"Why do you say that?" Peeta said.
"Snow killed my father and he will do the same with your brother. We have to get him out of White Palace while there is still time."
"Why do you sound as if your life is of no consequence?" Peeta asked.
Katniss closed her eyes and she saw two knights and a sword pierced into the heart of Snow. Her head hurt and she felt calloused hands on her face. She opened her eyes to see Peeta staring at her. His blue eyes filled with concern. She knew that protecting the Mellarks was only part of her mission. "Because it is my destiny to kill Snow."
