It had been two weeks since Paige had taken Emma to Rick's grave to face her trauma. With one exception, the nightmares had mostly stopped and she even felt less depressed. Even so she still had her bad days such as today. That afternoon, she had been rushed to the hospital with contractions only to be told it was a false labour. She had been having braxton hicks contractions on and off for days, but today everything seemed so real that now she felt devastated by the news.
Spike tried to cheer her up by reminding Emma the real thing would be coming soon. As Emma sat on her bed staring at the empty cribs. Sean came running down the basement steps
"Hey, how are you feeling? Your mom said you had a false alarm today." Sean said, trying to be supportive and comforting.
"I really thought they'd be here today. I really wanted to finally hold them and I'm so tired of being so uncomfortable, stressed and tired all the time." Emma sounded clearly upset, like the weight of the babies was on her shoulders not her stomach.
Sean sat down next to Emma, wrapping his arms around her. He tried to think of how to better help her.
"I'm just so tired of being pregnant." Emma sighed wearily.
"Anything I can do? Or need me to ask for help from someone?" Sean asked.
"I think I'm just going to try and rest, once again." Emma sighed.
"That's a good idea, I'll call later to check in on you." Sean said assuringly to her as he kissed her on the forehead. She didn't respond as he left, Emma just continued to look in the direction of the cribs, wondering what was going to happen next.
Manny was on her way to Emma's to try and cheer up her friend. Yesterday when Emma thought she had been in real labour, Manny was one of the first people she had called to tell and again when she had been told it was only false labour. When she got to Emma's she headed to the door leading downstairs but as Manny entered, her enthusiasm vanished when she realised there was someone there with Emma already.
"and nothing fits! It feels like clothes I bought specifically for this reason don't even fit! And I constantly feel sick and gross. It's not just about wanting them here already but I want to feel normal again! I have been having pain since this morning!" Manny heard Emma venting to Paige.
"Manny hey!" Emma said trying to hide the fact she was just almost in tears.
"Hey, what were you talking about?" Manny asked, trying to hide what she had heard.
"It's not important." Emma said, trying to cover it up. She hoped Manny didn't hear her before.
"So you come up with names yet?" Paige asked, trying to change the subject quickly.
Emma let out an annoyed sigh. "Damn it..." Realising one more thing she should've covered.
"For a while I was thinking of Cameron for one of them, don't know which. Or maybe Hope for a girl." Emma said wistfully.
"After Sean? Aw so cute, why don't you use it?" Manny asked.
"What if... once they are here… Sean decides he doesn't want to be tied down and that they're too much work and leaves? Then it's like a constant reminder." Emma said, worried about the future.
The other 2 were silent, not sure how to reply.
"I went through one phase where I wanted their names to be more original, not the kind of names you hear everyday." Emma said.
"What kind of names? Like decades old ones?" Paige asked.
"Something unique like Declan or Fiona but that makes them sound like some uptight elitist kids." Emma said, amused at the idea
They all laughed at the idea. Paige's phone beeped with a notification. Paige looked at it, alarm and realisation dawning on her.
"That's Ellie, I'm supposed to meet her." She said, leaping up in alarm, feeling guilty while Emma was having a bad day.
"You should go, I'll look after Emma, don't worry." Manny quickly replied trying to get her to go. As soon Paige had finally left, Emma turned to Manny
"Were you trying to get rid of her?" Emma asked, annoyed at what happened.
"...maybe." Manny said timidly. She had hoped Emma wouldn't notice.
"You're on the spirit squad with her. I thought you were okay with her." Emma started
"I'm okay with her as captain but not stealing my best friend!" Manny exclaimed.
Emma was shocked, not expecting her reply. "What do you mean?" Emma asked, concerned.
Manny didn't reply immediately. She sighed as she began.
"Last summer we didn't talk much because of...you know...but even after we made up it's like she's always here. And I get why because she's able to help you with...what happened and now I feel really horrible about being upset by that but...I miss when it was just us."
Manny felt really horrible being upset and making it about her. To her relief Emma walked over to her hugging her.
"Manny I'm really sorry for making you feel that way. With everything going on… I guess I just didn't think about it. But what do you say tonight we just have our own movie night? Like we used to do." Emma said comfortingly.
"I'd really like that... I'll go pick up snacks." Manny said as the tears stopped. She began heading over to the stairs. As she began to ascend the stairs she heard Emma let out a whimper.
"Em...are you okay?" Manny had a bad feeling.
"We actually might have to reschedule… I think my water just broke..." Emma said embarrassed and frightened.
"Okay, okay what do we do now?" Manny asked concerned but also excited.
"Uhhh... okay the doctor said because of the risk with a twin pregnancy that I should head out once that happens." Emma stated.
Manny helped Emma up the stairs and they alerted the rest of the family. Gathering some things quickly, they went to the car and headed to the hospital. Emma tried to reach Sean but got no answer.
A short time later Emma was at the hospital. Her mother and Manny waited in the room with her, Manny attempting to reach Sean while her mother tried to keep her calm.
"He's still not answering. What is keeping him?" Manny replied, annoyed. Emma who was already in pain from contractions let out an annoyed moan.
"Try calling Jt or Toby or Jay, maybe they can help" Emma said in a gritted voice
"Emma I need it's frustrating but right now you have to try and stay calm. Try to focus on breathing." Her mother told her.
Emma however it seemed could only focus on half of what she was saying. She didn't know what was wrong, all she knew was something was not right. She was feeling more exhausted and tired like it was hard to stay awake. She felt her eyelids getting heavy, The room seemed to be fading and things felt quieter.
The last thing she heard was what she thought was her mom shouting her name and another voice, maybe the doctor, talking about a caesarean.
