Holy crap, this took a long time to get up. Truth be told I've had this chapter done for a couple weeks now but I haven't had the time to proof it and I know that you are still going to come across some mistakes and I'm also having a really bad case of writers block. I mean, it's pretty bad over here. Lolz.
Another truth? I haven't exactly been too happy with The Vampire Diaries since the Season Finale. I'm not going to go into it for those of you who haven't seen it yet but I mean for those of you who have…let's just take a moment to reflect on the emotional fiasco that that was shall we?
….
Anyways,
Let's jump into some shout outs yeah?
I'd like to thank, Chuya1, MysticGirl200, klandgraf2007, and Revenger Trigger for reviewing last chapter. They mean the world to me, so thank you. (:
Disclaimer: I own nothing but my OC's.
Chapter 8: Ordinary People
It's official. She doesn't like the tunnels underneath the Lockwood's. There dark and damp and really she was just more of sunshine kind of person. Not to mention the echo of water dripping and any kind of sound really was kind of creeping her out. She'd been to out of it to notice yesterday.
"So the Lockwood's really have no idea that these tunnels are underneath their property?" Elena asks as she's shining her flash light around and Alaric glances back at the twins for a second. He catches sight of Damon sneaking up behind Adele and fights a smirk.
"Be careful where you shine that thing," He says to Elena. "Bats hate the light." Elena scoffs but Adele freezes.
"Wait, what?" She hadn't even thought about Bats. Why hadn't she thought about the possibility of Bats? Alaric stops walking to look back at her.
"Adele…" She jerks spinning around quickly and Damon throws out his hands. "Boo!" She jumps back with a small shirk and he laughs because he hadn't actually thought that that was going to work, it earns him a punch to the chest but still he's laughing as she crosses her arms, looking up at him with an adorable pout.
"Just ignore him," Alaric speaks up though as she glances back at him, she catches the grin he's trying hard to fight. "That's what I do."
"So you really can't get in?" Elena asks over her sister's shoulder and Damon's blue eyes which are dancing with amusement glance up at her briefly before returning to her sister.
"No." He quickly takes Adele by the shoulders turning her around and pushing her forward as he falls into step behind her passing by Elena easily. "Seems even the ancient Lockwood's were anti-vampire."
"What do you mean ancient?" She calls moving to catch up.
"See for yourself." They move their way further into the tunnels. When they come across the cave, Damon steps aside. "Well this is as far as I get to go." He says watching the three human's walk freely into the cave. Alaric shines his light at the wall drawing Elena's attention there right away.
"What is all this?" She asks amazement clear in her voice.
"Well, as far as I can tell, it's a story." Alaric starts, about to jump into an explanation of what kind of story like he had done to Adele and Damon last night only for the two to stare blankly at him when he was done.
Adele quickly cuts him off this time, not wanting to sit through the explanation again. "To put it simply, it's a really, really old story."
Alaric glares at the young blonde as she sends a smirk his way. Shaking his head he turns back to the wall, shining his flashlight across a certain area where there we're three moons drawn along with a man and a wolf. "That right there is a moon cycle." He explains before he flashes the light to the man and the wolf. "A man, a wolf."
"A werewolf." Elena says drawing the conclusion easily enough.
"Yeah," Damon speaks up from his place on the ground, having slid down the wall to take a seat knowing this was going to take a while. "It's "The Lockwood Diaries: Pictionary-Style."" He mocks.
"I don't understand. I thought the Lockwood's came here with the Original Founders in the 1860s." Elena says looking between them.
"Maybe they did." Adele says with a shrug. "But according to this wall, these werewolves have been here a lot longer than that." She tells her and Elena looks at her.
"How long?"
"Long." Damon answers. "It gets better. Show her."
Alaric walks forward, turning on his flashlight to shine it across symbols that look to be spelling something. "Names." He tells her. "They're not native. They're written in Runic, a Viking script."
"Vikings?" Elena sounds astonished, like this whole thing just got more unbelievable as time went on.
"This name here," He points the flashlight to one of the top names. "I translated it. It reads Niklaus."
"Klaus." Elena whispers as Adele moves around her, pointing at the name underneath it.
"And Elijah," She says before moving over. "And Rebekah."
"These are the names of the original family?"
"Craved into a cave that's been here since way before the founding of Mystic Falls." Adele says as she crosses her arms, feeling kind of chilly in the damp cave.
"Or even the entire new world for that matter." Alaric adds.
"Okay," Elena laughs. "This has to be another one of Klaus's fakes."
"That's what I said." Damon speaks up.
"That could be true," Alaric sighs, flashing the flashlight down to another –unknown to her, name. "Except the last name up here makes us think otherwise."
"What's the name?" She asks looking between the teacher and her sister.
"Mikael." Adele answers after a brief pause.
"Mikael?" Elena's eyes have grown to twice their size. "Mikael as in the vampire hunter who knows how to kill Klaus?"
"Yep." Damon smirks as their eyes fall to him. "I now like to call him, "Papa Original"."
*VD*
Elena's eyes are glued to her sister and Damon as Alaric is sorting through the many photos he'd taken of the drawings in the cave. Adele lands a kick to Damon's side but he catches her foot so she uses the butt of the stake in her hand to slam against his temple making him drop her foot.
"These images tell a story...to learn the story; you have to decipher these images." Alaric is saying and despite them all doing other things, there listening intently.
Adele swings the stake out and Damon catches her wrist, pulling the stake from her hand. "Sloppy." He says and without warning she kicks the stake from his hand sending it flying through the air where she catches it. Elena's eyes widen as she watches the display. How the hell did they expect her to learn that? How did Adele even learn to do that?
Recovering from his shock he quickly gets back into the fight. ""Ghost of Christmas Past"" He calls out blocking another kick to his side. "Mason Lockwood set up the cave and led us to a weapon that can kill Klaus."
"Yeah, but doesn't Mikael have a weapon?" Elena asks never taking her eyes from the couple.
Adele moves in to strike at his heart but he catches her wrist. "Yes." He answers as Adele tries fighting his hold. "Which probably means the wall will lead us to Mikael, who we have already found... and lost." She places her other head on the butt of the stake trying to push it down but Damon grabs it, throwing it away as he flips her around, pressing himself into her back. "Bang." He whispers against her ear. "You're dead." He bites her playfully on the neck and she suppresses a giggle pushing him away.
"These images at the very least might tell us what that weapon is." Alaric is saying as Elena moves around the couple who are now just being stupid as Damon grabs her sister's waist pulling her to him as he pretends to attack her neck and she squeals fighting against him.
"Then all we have to do is find out what they mean." Elena says as Adele breaks free from Damon, making sure to step away from him.
"Fine! Fine! If I am being irritatingly optimistic like you two...how do you suppose we do that?" Damon asks taking a few steps ahead of Adele.
"Well, if the story is about the Original Family living here, then we go straight to the source." Elena says and there's a large thud from behind them along with a groan and the two standing at the kitchen counter quickly turn around finding Damon laying on the floor as Adele straddles his waist, a stake pressed against where his heart is.
"You're dead." She mocks with a grin and Elena can't help but laugh slightly at the sight of Damon's baffled expression. He sure as hell hadn't been expecting that but that was probably the point, the element of surprise and all that. His young girlfriend had swiped his feet out from under him when he wasn't paying attention to her and before he could react, she'd been on top of him with a stake to his heart. He wasn't even sure where she'd gotten the stake from seeing as the other one is still laying where he had thrown it.
*VD*
After Damon vowed to get her back, Adele joined her sister when she left for School, having been curious as to what Elena's plan was. She follows after her until she stops walking and they watch Rebekah do a few flips before landing in front of Elena. The scowl that forms along her pretty features is a sign that she isn't a very pleasant sight for the original. "You!" She sneers. "Goody." Adele goes completely ignored which is fine with her.
"I was hoping we could talk." Elena says in that soft voice she tended to use whenever she wanted something she knew she couldn't get by just batting her innocent brown eyes. Rebekah finally looks at her and she holds up her hands.
"Don't look at me. Right now I'm just an observer." Rebekah rolls her eyes turning back to look at Elena.
"About what? Stefan? Don't worry; I'm off him until he starts treating me better. In fact, you should probably take a page out of my book, if I'm being honest." She snips and Adele snorts to which Elena sends her a glare.
"Actually, I'd rather talk about this." She pulls one of the pictures Alaric had taken of Rebekah's name in the cave out of her bag and holds it up. "I'm curious why you and Klaus have spent a thousand years running from your father."
Rebekah's snarky attitude has quickly vanished and she seems to be struggling for something to say before finally she tells them that she should get back to the girls meaning the cheerleading squad. "Homecoming is right around the corner." She says as she's turning away.
"Well then I'll just ask Mikael when we wake him." This makes the female original stop and she stands there for a minute as if debating whether or not to turn around and when she does she has a tense smile on.
"You're bluffing." She says. "You don't know where he is. Nobody does."
"So who's rotting in that old cemetery in Charlotte?" She throws back and Rebekah seems to realize how serious Elena was about knowing there past.
"If you wake Mikael, we are all doomed." She snaps rushing forward to stand in front of her once again.
"So then, tell me." Elena pushes.
"Why do you want to know?"
"Why don't you want me to wake him?"
Rebekah stares at her without making a sound; it doesn't even look like she's breathing as her eyes narrow. She wasn't going to tell her, that much was clear and Elena already has the urge to pull her hair out. "I need to get back to the girls." She quickly makes her leave and Elena looks towards her sister.
"She was going to tell me. I saw it in her eyes." She says but Adele rolls her eyes.
"No what you saw was the deep desire to break your neck, believe me I know the look all too well considering I'm the one who's wearing it 85 percent of the time. You weren't even close." Elena huffs, crossing her arms as she stomps away in frustration leaving Adele standing there watching as Rebekah is talking with the other cheerleaders.
Making her way towards them, she places a grin on her face as some of the cheerleaders notice her, sending her matching grins. "Hey Adele." One of them by the name of Sarah calls.
"Hey. How's the homecoming routine coming along?" She asks.
"Great actually. Rebekah is a lot of help. She's been awesome." One of the others tells her and Adele turns her grin on the original.
"I bet she has. Are you going to the homecoming dance?" She tilts her head, like she had no idea if the blonde was planning on attending when she knew very well that she was.
"Of course." She answers and Adele nods.
"What about you guys? Your all going right?" The girls all nods looking between the two blondes as if they could feel the power struggle going on.
"What about you? Are you going to be there with your new boyfriend? What's his name again….Damon right? He's really hot." Sarah gives off a dreamy sigh as her eyes glaze over slightly as if imagining him in her head, something Adele's seen a lot of others do.
"Yeah, he is." Adele smiles but it's tight and there's a slight edge to it that makes Sarah's own smile fall and she shifts her eyes to the ground. "I'm not actually sure yet." She goes on. "I might show up if I can find a dress on time. It's so hard to find the right dress to wear to these things; especially so close to the dance. It'll take hours."
"Tell me about it." A raven haired cheerleader calls from the back of the group. "I spent three hours in one shop last weekend. I just couldn't find the right color." This sparks a conversion between her and another cheerleader about dress colors and Adele ignores them.
"What about you Rebekah? Do you have a dress yet?" Rebekah who has crossed her arms narrows her eyes at the human as she shakes her head.
"No, not yet but I was planning on looking at some after school." Adele nods pushing her backpack strap higher onto her shoulder.
"Well good luck. Just keep in mind that it's always good to have a second opinion. Bye girls." She watches as they wave her off as she's turning around and she can't help the smirk that forms.
*VD*
"She's going to tell me. She's scared of him, Damon. I saw her face. I just have to engage in a little "mean girl" power struggle first." Elena is calling from behind her as there making their way up the stairs to Alaric's apartment. Adele was on the phone with him, telling him of Elena's failure this morning.
"But yet that's the thing, she doesn't know what being a mean girl means. She never has. Stomping your way into school and demanding she tell all just because we have a picture of her name from way back when and threating her with Mikael doesn't mean she's going to tell anybody anything. If anything it could cause her to shut down. When it comes to being a mean girl, you have to play your cards right. She may be an original but she's still a girl." Adele explains to him.
"Which I'm guessing means, you've done something to provoke her?" He asks seeming not too happy with the idea.
"After Elena stormed away, I poked at homecoming. She wants to go, which means it's all about dates and dresses at the moment."
"I didn't storm away, I saw the whole thing. I may not have heard it but I did see it." Elena says. "It was a complete power-struggle if I've ever seen one."
"Exactly." Adele hums.
"Well make sure she doesn't power-struggle you into a wheel chair." He tells her and she scoffs.
"How does Stefan look?" She chances the subject much to Damon's annoyance. He'd rather tell her a million times to be careful. Maybe then she'd listen.
"Mmm…Pasty and pouty." He tells her as they enter Alaric's apartment finding him hanging pictures along his kitchen cabinets.
"Well he'll just have to get over it. It's for his own good. Call me later?"
"Of course." She hangs up, turning towards Alaric who is looking between them.
"Rebekah will come around." Elena says still confident that her threats have worked.
"You're sure about that?" He asks and Adele's attention is pulled to her phone as it dings. "I mean a thousand year old vampire, I'm sure, has learned the art of patience."
"She's a thousand year old vampire, who's joined the cheerleader squad..." Adele speaks up, holding up her cell phone for them to see.
Come back to the Boarding house. I need a second opinion. ~Rebekah
"There is a whole different set of rules at play here." Elena is staring at the message with a glare. "I've got this."
*VD*
Coming through the front door, she finds Rebekah messing around with the stereo system sipping from a champagne glass as she puts on a song Adele's only heard once, thanks to Caroline and she'd much rather keep it that way. Upon hearing her heels clicking against the wood floors, she spins around with a delighted smile. "Hey!" She greets. "What's up?"
"You summoned me." Adele points out, gazing around the living room where the couches and coffee table have been moved, leaving a completely open area.
"Ah right." Rebekah sends her a grin. "Alright girls, have at it!" She calls and to Adele's complete surprise 6 girls dressed in very different dresses come strutting out, lining up in front of Rebekah. "Okay, now twirl." The 6 girls spin around, letting them see the dresses in a whole.
"You compelled your own private runway show?" Adele laughs as she moves further into the living room to stand beside the female original because the idea was actually kind of brilliant. She would like to say that she didn't approve, which part of her didn't but she could see the usefulness of this, the time it would save.
"I need a homecoming dress, you basically offered to be my second opinion so what do you think?" Adele glances at Rebekah before walking forward, tilting her head as she gazes at the six different dresses. Rebekah watches as she walks slowly around them, every once in a while looking back up to her.
"The red one." She finally states coming to a stop in front of the girl wearing it and Rebekah walks up to her, gazing at the dress as well.
"You think?" Her voice is thoughtful and Adele nods as she gazes between the dress and her.
"Definitely. It's the best fit for your complexion." She explains and the original nods happily waving a hand in the air towards the six girls.
"Go away." She demands. "Remember nothing." They watch silently as the girls disappear before Rebekah turns away returning to her champagne bottle. She fills her glass back up. "Would you like some?" She asks to which Adele shakes her head, her nose scrunching up in distaste.
"Not practically." She says.
"Not an alcohol type of person?" Rebekah asks the idea seemed slightly strange. The blonde human just seemed like the drinking type.
"Not a champagne type of person. I go for more of the harder stuff. Since I've been with Damon its Bourbon mostly, considering that that is basically all that they stock up on in here." She explains as Rebekah begins leading her from the room and up the stairs.
She leads them into Damon's bedroom and Adele makes a break for his alcohol stash, pouring herself a glass of the vervain laced amber liquid. Just to be safe. Rebekah is gazing around at the massive bedroom.
"I was snooping through the rooms earlier, seeing if any we're better than the one I've got now when I came across this one. It's impressive but sadly occupied." Adele flashes her a smirk as she's raising the glass to her lips. "It's definitely the biggest in the house, fanciest to. Much different than Stefan's."
"Well the brothers are two completely different people as you'll come to notice." Adele says as Rebekah swings open the closet door, gazing at the section of Damon's clothes, finding them all to be designer.
"Yes, I've started to realize that it's not only there looks that they differ in but I guess you can understand that considering who your sister is. I still don't quite understand it. For twins, you two look absolutely nothing alike."
"Yeah well…" Adele downs her drink quickly. "I've chalked it up to her being a doppelgänger."
"Yes." Rebekah agrees shifting through Damon's clothes. "Maybe if she hadn't been cursed with the misfortune of being a doppelgänger, she'd look a little more like you."
"Is there anything in particular that you're looking for?" Adele asks as the original is now shifting through her clothes.
"Not really." She answers. "Just snooping a bit. I've already snooped through Stefan's room completely; why not get a feel for the other brother now? He's very neat it seems or it that just you?"
"No, you'd be surprised." She mutters.
"Now I know your just dying to ask me questions." Rebekah sends her a glance over her shoulder. "So go on. Ask away."
"Elijah said that your father was a landowner in Europe." She says, crossing her legs as she leans back against Damon's alcohol table. "How did you guys end up here?"
"My parents had just started a family, when a plague struck their homeland. They lost a child to it. They wanted to escape and protect their future family from the same fate." She closes the closet door moving towards his stack of books by the bed.
"So how did you end up here? This part of the world hadn't even been discovered yet." Rebekah sends her a grin, like it was adorable that she'd think that.
"Not by anyone in your history books." She laughs. "But my mother knew the witch Ayana, who heard from the spirits of a mystical land where everyone was healthy...blessed by the gifts of speed and strength; that led my family here, where we lived amongst those people."
Adele takes a sip from her glass giving her time to think over what she'd said before the answer hits her. "The werewolves."
"To us, they were just our neighbors. My family lived in peace with them for over 20 years, during which time my family had more children, including me."
Adele hums. "You make it sound so normal." Rebekah pushes aside the comforter on the bed, using her hands to push down on the mattress testing how comfortable it was.
"It was." She says as she takes a seat, nodding in approval. "Once a month our family retreated into the caves beneath our village. The wolves would howl through the night and by morning we'd return home..." Rebekah's eyes glazed over as if she was reliving a memory. "One full moon, Klaus and my youngest brother Henrik snuck out to watch the men turn into beasts. That was forbidden. Henrik paid the price..."
She moves from the bed, towards the dresser where she fingers the pictures there. One of a Adele naturally and one of both Damon and Adele with her standing in his arms, a bright smile across her pretty face as he smirks that trade mark smirk of his at the camera over her head. She explains to Adele how Henrik was mauled by a werewolf and there was nothing the spirits would do to help.
"And that was the beginning of the end of peace with our neighbors." She opens the top drawer only to close it again when it becomes clear that it's Adele's drawer so she opens the second one and begins rummaging through it not even the least bit surprised when most of the boxers and t-shirts are black. "And one of the last moments my family had together as humans." She adds just as Adele's phone goes off. "You better get that. It'll be Damon checking up on you."
But Adele was already a head of her, pulling the phone up to her ear. "Hey."
"Hey." She raises an eyebrow staying silent as she listens in on the background noise. It was extremely loud meaning that…he wasn't in Mystic Falls.
"Damon…" She sings. "Where are you?"
"No idea," He answers with only little hesitation. "But I'm pretty sure, I'm overdressed...Still standing?"
"I'm fine. What do you mean you don't know where you are?" She didn't like where this was going or maybe it was just her not trusting him after the whole Katherine road trip fiasco. Adele hears someone in the background telling him that they'd be at the bar.
"Was that…was that Stefan? Damon what the hell?" She demands.
"Yeah, I went off a bit." He tells her. "Don't worry –I know what I'm doing."
"You let him out?" She sighs, though she doesn't sound as angry anymore which he takes as a good sign.
"I've got this and I would ignore any of Elena's calls if I we're you. She may be a little peeved. Stay safe Kitten."
"Okay and just remember Damon; don't do anything you'll regret." She leaves him with that, feeling the message was clear. Not that she didn't trust him because she did but if he actually did do something as stupid as cheat, she'd find out and as much as it would kill her, they'd be done right there on the spot. It would happen so quickly that Damon wouldn't even know what hit him because that was one thing she wasn't going to stand for. Ever.
*VD*
It's moments like these when Damon is glad he has a high tolerance to alcohol, moments in which he realizes that his baby brother who has always been the boarding boring type is better at drinking games than he is. He forces back a scowl as Stefan makes yet another quarter into the glass in the center of the table.
"Drink up, brother." The emotionless vampire taunts.
"Well you go get us another bottle of this?" Damon turns his attention to the bar tender in his lap as he holds out the empty bottle of Bourbon. The cute bar tender mutters a "yes, sir." With a smile and takes off in the direction of the bar leaving the two brothers alone. "You've been on this "bunny diet" for a better part of 50 years." He says. "So, how is it that "Saint Stefan", of all people, is good at a drinking game?"
"Oh, the "bunny diet" gave me a lot of time to practice." Stefan picks up a few quarters from the table. "Wallow in despair." He bounces one off the table and it soars into the glass. "Drown in guilt." He bounces another and makes it. "Regret my existence." He does it one more time and Damon raises an eyebrow as the quarter barely hits the rim of the glass before sinking in. "It's precision born out of tragic boredom. Drink up, brother."
"All that effort wasted on telling you how boring you are and now you finally agree with me?" He quickly downs the shot in front of him.
"Damon," Stefan leans forward onto the table. "You are worse than Elena. Getting me drunk, brotherly bonding - what do you think, I'll break down and you can pull me back from the edge, is that it?"
"I happen to like the edge, Stefan." Damon corrects. "Your problem is your inability to resist falling over it. You're all or nothing man." Callie, the bar tender returns, placing herself back in Damon's lap and the bottle in front of Stefan. "You can't just be. Although, who am I to judge?" He bounces a coin and it flips into the glass. "Drink up brother." Callie holds her arm out, letting Stefan sink his teeth into her wrist as she was compelled to do by Damon and when Stefan pulls away, he glances between the bar tender and his brother.
"You know," He sighs sitting back and wiping at his lips. "What would your girlfriend do if she saw you right now?" Damon raises an eyebrow as the bar tender sends him a look. "Oh yes, sweetheart." Stefan coos up at her. "He's taken but she's not here obviously because you're still alive." Damon snorts as Stefan laughs. "But think about it Damon, if she was to walk her little blonde self into this bar right now and see you with some other girl all over you, who do you think she'd kill first? You or her? Personally, my bet is her only because she'd do it quickly while with you, she'd probably take her time. She'd make sure it hurt."
Damon doesn't respond, because while he knew Adele wasn't going to come walking in being as she's on her information mission, if the situation we're to arise and somehow Adele did show up, Stefan was probably dead on. He wasn't going to be the last to attempt that when mad, his girlfriend could make probably anyone cower in fear.
*VD*
"Honestly, I just don't understand your sister and Stefan as a couple and probably never will but you and Damon…" Adele turns her attention back to Rebekah who has disappeared into the bathroom and she can hear her rummaging through the cabinets. "By yourselves you both are beautiful people but together…together you two are stunning, captivating in way that could never be matched. You can walk into a room and everybody knows you two belong together, that your love is eternal."
"Thank you?" She calls out.
"It's the kind of love that neither of you are going to walk away from the same people you we're before. Despite having such strong affections for each other, you're destined to fail; I've seen it happen before it's just going to leave you both a shell of a person. The best relationships hardly ever work and I'm not saying this to be mean or hateful, I'm saying it because it is true. You should prepare yourself for the worst at all times."
Adele is watching her as she reappears and Rebekah's gaze falls to her expecting to see some kind of reaction besides the one she's getting. She expected anger or hurt something besides the cold smirk she's receiving. It makes her head tilt to the side and her eyes dance in confusion.
"Believe me sweetheart," Adele dwells. "You're not the only one who's told me that Damon and I won't make it and you're not going to be the last and if it turns out to be true then so be it, at least it'll have been worth it. Are we going to get on with the story?"
"I don't really see the point in it." Rebekah is saying ignoring her completely. "Why vampires get so involved with humans. We're a predatory species. We don't have time to care about human's and there silly little lives."
"Is that why you compelled yourself a run way show because you don't care about the homecoming dance?" When Rebekah simply stares at her Adele rolls her eyes, pushing herself from the table she's leaning against. "You know, what I'm just going to go. I have better things to do."
"You haven't even heard half the story." Rebekah reminds her and Adele rolls her eyes as she turns to her, crossing her arms across her chest.
"You're not going to tell it." She snaps. "You're just bored and you want to push someone around but come on, do I really look like the type of girl to be pushed around? Even by a thousand year old vampire? No? I didn't think so. If you want to push someone around call Elena or better yet you can just compel yourself a friend." She turns away, beginning her way towards the door.
"The necklace Stefan gave to Elena, it wasn't his to give." She calls out, stopping Adele from leaving the room. "It belonged to the original witch."
"The one who put the hybrid curse on Klaus?" Adele asks stopping in the doorway.
"Not just the hybrid curse. She's also the one who turned us into vampires." And she goes into explaining to her the conversion she had overheard all those centuries ago about her mother wanting to find a way to protect her children from the wolves.
*VD*
Adele quickly finds herself in the study after Rebekah said something about being thirsty before walking from the room and she followed behind, quickly becoming agitated with the vampire.
"So," Adele starts while pouring Bourbon into two glasses. "Vampirism was a form of protection?"
"What else would it be?" Rebekah asks as she accepts the glass from Adele.
"A curse?" She offers lightly.
"My parents only saw it as a way of keeping their children alive." Rebekah takes a sip from her glass, her nose scrunching up as if it wasn't the most pleasant taste in the world. She walks over to the alcohol cabinet, opening it up and pulling a bottle of wine out. It was obvious to what kind of drinker Rebekah is.
"Why stay?" Adele suddenly asks, drawing Rebekah's attention away from the wine in her hand. "If your parents we're so afraid of the werewolves, why not just leave?"
"Pride." Rebekah answers with a soft snort, like the answer was obvious. "My father didn't want to run anymore. He wanted to fight and be superior to the wolves. Where they could bite, we had to bite harder. Where they had speed, we had to be faster. Agility, strength, senses..." Rebekah tells her how the witch Ayana refused to help her mother, how if she attempted what she was talking about that the spirits would turn on her and when she'd walked out on them, how Mikael told her mother that it was in her hands alone.
Adele tilts her head, confusion filling her blue eyes as she looks at the original. "Your mother…she was witch?" She asks; her voice uncertain.
"Yes." Rebekah confirms.
"The witch of the original family?" Adele almost laughs. "The original witch." There was no way they could've known, but still it seemed slightly ridiculous that they hadn't put that together earlier. "Okay. But if your mother was a witch wouldn't that make you…"
"A witch also? No." Rebekah shakes her head and rolls her eyes. "A witch is nature's servant; a vampire is an abomination of nature." Adele notes that she sounds bored as she explains this. "You can either be one or the other, never both. My mother did this for us. She did not turn."
"How did you turn?"
"She called upon the sun for life, and the ancient white oak tree, one of nature's eternal objects, for immortality." Rebekah meets her eyes and there unfocused as if she's recalling the memory as she's making her way towards the fireplace. "That night, my father offered us wine laced with blood. And then he drove his sword through our hearts."
Adele can only stare for a moment. The idea of what she's suggesting just so chilling, she'd had the same reaction when she'd found out that it was Damon's father who had killed both him and Stefan in cold blood. "He killed you?"
"And he wasn't delicate about it either." She breaks the neck of the bottle, before throwing it into the fireplace. She tells her about waking up with Klaus before Mikael had brought in a girl demanding they drink her blood. "We had to drink more blood to complete the ritual." She almost laughs before turning to look at her completely.
"It was euphoric! The feeling of power was indescribable but the witch Ayana was right about the consequences. The spirits turned on us, and nature fought back. For every strength there would be a weakness. The sun became our enemy. It kept us indoors for weeks and though my mother found a solution, there were other problems. Neighbors who had opened their homes to us could now keep us out. Flowers at the base of the white oak burned, and prevented compulsion and the spell decreed that the tree that gave us life could also take it away." Adele's ears perk at this, though Rebekah would never know considering her unwavering stare but it was almost as if she could read her mind as she quickly continues on.
"So we burned it to the ground but the darkest consequence was something my parents never anticipated. The hunger. Blood had made us reborn and it was blood that we craved above all else. We could not control it and with that, the predatory species was born."
"Why did Mikael start hunting Klaus?" She asks after letting the information she'd just received sink in. Rebekah is quiet at first as if contemplating whether or not she was going to tell her but she'd already told her so much, so she lets out a sigh.
"When Nik made his first human kill, it triggered his werewolf gene. With that, he became my father's greatest shame." She explains softly.
"Yeah." Adele nods. "Elijah told us the story. Your mother had an affair with a werewolf, Klaus isn't his son."
"She tried to make it right. She put the hybrid curse on Nik to suppress his werewolf side, and then she turned her back on him." Adele's gaze falls to the ground. She doesn't understand that. She doesn't understand how a mother could turn their back on their child, no matter the situation. Family shouldn't turn on family. "But Mikael's greatest weakness as a human was his pride. As a vampire, that was magnified. He went on a rampage and killed half the village. Then he came home and killed her."
"He killed your mother?"
"He said she broke his heart so he would break hers. He tore it from her chest as Nik watched." Rebekah won't turn around to look at her and Adele doesn't blame her. She wouldn't want to relive that memory either. "Afterwards, my father took off in a rage, and the rest of my family scattered. Nik stayed, so he could help me bury her. He knew I had to say goodbye to my mother." She tells her of their conversion where she promised Klaus that she would never turn her back on him, how Elijah returned to promise the same. How they'd stick together as one, always and forever.
"Always and forever? Even though he locked you in a coffin for 90 years?" Adele tilts her head as Rebekah finally turns to look at her.
"We're vampires. Our emotions are heightened. I'm stubborn, Elijah moral, and Nik...Nik has no tolerance for those who disappoint him. Over a thousand years as a family we've all made that mistake at least once. I've made it several times."
"And you still love him." She says softly.
"He's my brother and I'm immortal. Should I spend an eternity alone instead?" Adele doesn't answer because she could understand; she doesn't see herself turning her back on Jeremy or Elena anytime soon. "You've heard the story; it's time for you to go."
"Go where?" Adele looks around. "In case you forgot, I…technically live here."
"I don't know what you or your sister are up to but I'm no longer playing along." Rebekah snaps and Adele simply shrugs.
"We're just looking for a reason not to wake Mikael."
"And I've given you a thousand! But you will anyways. I know you want him to help you kill my brother, I'm not stupid."
"It's no secret that I want Klaus dead. It's no secret that we all want him dead." Adele snaps.
"Do what you need. Wake Mikael at your own peril. But make no mistake, if you come after my brother, I will rip you apart. And I get my temper from my father." She threats to which Adele sends her a grin that seems much colder than it should be.
"Klaus killed my Aunt, he killed Elena the fact that she's still alive is nothing short of a miracle but he's still after her, he's still looming over our heads as a consist reminder that Elena is in danger, that we're all in danger." Adele pulls her keys from her pocket. "You can threaten me all you want to but I'll do what I have to, to protect my family and friends and if that means killing your brother then we'll make it happen."

Adele finds Elena, Alaric and Bonnie in the cave and as much as she'd rather not be there, she stays letting them talk as she gazes around at all the marked up pictures. They've made great progress.
"We uh, filled in what we could. Vampire," Alaric tells her as she's flashing her flashlight around. He sticks a sticky note up on top of one of the drawings that says werewolf. "Werewolf, slaughter, mayhem, etc." He trails off as he stands beside her.
"Well…" Adele starts flashing her flashlight towards the drawing of a tree. "That's the white oak tree used in the spell to create the vampires." She moves the light over to another drawing of a tree only with a flame underneath it. "Meaning that was when they burnt down the tree, destroying the only way that they could be killed."
"Okay. So tree equals weapon, sort of. We already knew that." Alaric sighs moving his own flashlight towards another drawing. "What we are not sure about is this: we've got the witch symbol, and what looks like a bleeding heart. Upside down figures usually signified death, of some kind."
"Okay." Adele steps forward examining it closely. "Mikael killed the witch by ripping out her heart." She bites the inside of her cheek looking towards the unknown symbol between the bleeding heart figure and the upside down figure.
"We don't know what that is." Elena speaks up. "We haven't gotten that far." But Adele barely hears her as she's glancing between the symbol and two separate symbols that line the cave walls.
"Oh my god." She mutters causing confusion among the others who look between each other. "Rebekah doesn't know the real story."
"What are you talking about?" Bonnie asks stepping up behind her.
"Mikael didn't kill their mother." Adele whispers. "Klaus did."

She slams the front door behind her without meaning to. She's clenching photos in her hand as she enters the living room where Rebekah is pouring herself a glass of Bourbon but she doesn't let that surprise her. "I thought you we're gone." Rebekah snaps sipping from the glass slowly.
"How do you know Mikael killed your mother?" Adele asks deciding pleasantries weren't necessary at this point.
"Nik was there." She says, looking over at her like the answer was obvious and it was. Adele figured that was the way it played out, how else would she never know the truth? "He told me."
"He lied." She states bluntly watching as the original's eyebrows raise.
"And how do you know that?" She asks, tilting her head.
"The cave," Adele moves forward to stand in front of Rebekah. "Where you craved your family's names is covered in symbols." Adele holds up the photos moving through them as she talks. "The story of your family: how your parents arrived, how they made peace, the spell that turned them into vampires, and this." She stops at the symbol Alaric, Elena and Bonnie hadn't been able to figure out. "This is the symbol for hybrid. It's a combination of the werewolf and the vampire symbol." She moves to the next photo. "And this is the one for your mother."
"Her necklace." Rebekah breathes staring at the photo with an intense stare, like she could burn it if she stared at it hard enough.
"And this is the story of her death." She flips through the pictures slowly. "The hybrid killed the Original Witch. Not Mikael." She shakes her head, placing the photos on the table beside them. "Klaus."
"No." Rebekah shakes her head, her eyes beginning to glaze over. "No, he wouldn't."
"She put the curse on him, made it so that he would be the only one of his kind, and then she rejected him. With the werewolf gene comes aggression and violence." She explains softly. "When he turned, all of that was heightened. He killed her and then he made up this entire lie about your father, so that he wouldn't lose you."
"These mean nothing!" She finally snaps. They're just stupid drawings, done by stupid people who had no idea who my family was!" She snatches the pictures from the table, rushing over to throw them into the fire.
"Then why are you so upset?" Adele asks remaining in her spot as Rebekah turns back to look at her, tears filling her eyes.
"Why are you doing this to me? I've done nothing to you!"
"No, you haven't." Adele sighs. "Klaus killed your mother and you have a right to know the truth. He has a hold on you, on Elena, on everyone. He has for a thousand years. We have to make it stop."
"Shut up!" Rebekah yells, moving her hands to her ears. "Shut up! Don't talk anymore! Nothing!"
"Rebekah…" Adele finally moves forward with caution, unsure of what she might do. When she reaches her and Rebekah as yet to do anything but uncover her ears Adele places her hands on her shoulders meeting her own blue eyes over flowing with tears. "I'm sorry." She says just as firmly and though Rebekah doesn't want to believe her, it was hard not to and she chokes on a sob that comes out as a struggled noise.
She lets her head fall forward onto the human's shoulder returning her hug when she wraps her arms around her shoulders, the sob she tried so hard to fight breaking through leaving her gasping for air and Adele stands there hugging her even though she was almost crushing her because she is sorry and she doesn't think she could just leave her there, crying in the middle of the living room. Even a thousand year old vampires need somebody every once in a while.

She throws her damp towel into the laundry basket. After getting Rebekah to calm down enough to get her into her room, Adele stayed in the room long enough for the blonde original to cry herself to sleep. When she made it to Damon's room, she grabbed a pair of pink boy shorts that Damon had magically found bared in her underwear drawer back at her house and with the words "I'd rather be sleeping" written across the butt in yellow lettering, he'd thrown them at her and demanded she start wearing them. She grabbed a white loose fitted tank top as well before she made a B-line for the bathroom to take a quick shower.
She exits the bathroom her gaze falling on the bed as she does and she tries to fight the smile falling across her lips. "When did you get back?" She crawls into the bed, flopping onto her stomach beside him.
"Just a few minutes ago." He smirks over at her. "Guess what?"
"What?" She whispers.
"We got Mikael." He mouths and her eyes widen.
"Really?" She asks. "How?"
"No idea. I guess Katherine came through." Damon watches as his blonde girlfriend rolls her eyes at the mention of his ex but stays silent. "Plan's in motion." He pauses for a moment before his smirk grows. "See, I told you I had it. Though I'm pretty sure I'm going to hear it tomorrow from Elena. She's probably been planning her rant all day."
"Yeah well she's been on decoding the symbols almost all day; she's had plenty of time to come up with a good one though I'm not sure she's going to yell at you."
"Why not?" Damon scoffs. "I went behind her back, freed Stefan. And you know what: it backfired. He's an even bigger dick than ever...just now he's a dick that's on our side." He tries to joke but it doesn't come out quite like he wanted it to and he watches as Adele just looks at him. "I'm surprised you're not at least a tiny bit mad at me."
"I'm not mad." She mutters, scooting closer to him. She fingers the hole in his shirt, created by Mikael when he'd shoved his hand into his chest and threatened to rip out his heart.
"I think Mikael's weapon is a stake." Damon tells her. "He mentioned something about it."
"They must have carved it from the white oak tree before they burned it down." She begins unbuttoning the shirt.
"So I was right. After all that, the wall led us to Mikael."
"Led us to more than just that, I think I got Rebekah on our side, too." She says popping open the last two buttons and pushing it open. He helps her push it off watching as she scrunches her nose up at it and throws it to the floor. She ignores the dry blood along his stomach and moves against his side, placing her head in the crook of his neck.
"Really?" He wraps an arm around her, pulling her even closer. "What did you learn from her?"
"That she's just a girl." Adele sighs closing her eyes. "She lost her mom to young and she loves blindly and recklessly…" Her eyes open back up and she lifts her head slightly to look at him. "Even if it consumes her." She lays her head back down. "And when it's all said and done, there's nothing more important than the bond of family."
"Well, you should tell that to my brother." He jokes lightly only for her to sigh.
"You know Damon, I'm not mad at you for letting Stefan out. I think, in the end…you're going to be the one to save him from himself." His brows furrow as he shifts slightly to gaze at her. "It won't be because he loves Elena." She shifts as well, gazing up at him once more. "It'll be because he loves you." She shifts again, curling against his side tightly. "Can I tell you the rest tomorrow?" She whispers. "I'm tired."
"Sure." He mutters pressing his lips against her damp hair inhaling her intoxicating scent as he listens to the sound of her heart beat and her breathing evening out as she falls to sleep curled up against his side.
Now, I totally wasn't planning on Adele stealing Elena's thunder in this chapter. It wasn't how I was planning for this chapter to go. Adele was supposed to be with Damon and Stefan helping Stefan realize that some small part of him does actually still care and Elena was supposed to do what she does in the episode and spend the day getting information from Rebekah but before I knew it Adele was helping Rebekah pick out a homecoming dress and I was like "Well shit, this is totally not how I planned for this to go."
I'm starting to realize all I do is sit here and type. My imagination, aka Adele seems to be the one writing this damn thing because no matter what I plan on writing when I first start the chapter it always somehow turns out different. It might also have something to do with the fact that I wasn't too happy about Elena just leaving Rebekah crying in the middle of the study, like "Hey, she'll get over it. It's not like she just found out her brother killed her mother or anything." Not cool, Elena. Not cool.
